Clergy Letter from Revd Stanley Menzies A few weeks ago we celebrated Christmas and welcomed the New Year against a background of really challenging times. We are faced by terrorism which curtailed normal celebrations in many European cities. Refugees continue to travel in perilous conditions rather than security. Pope Francis has questioned his belief in the face of such misery. There is anxiety across the globe and the storms and the floods add to our discomfort. Seldom can the traditional greeting of a Good New Year have been more heartfelt. The world is changing at a faster rate than at any time in history and though’ there are wonderful benefits there are too many victims, refugees, martyrs and countries, cities and human habitations laid to waste by hatred and indifference. What have we done with the good tidings of great joy that shall be to all people? This is the question that needs to be considered by nations, leaders, the Church and ourselves as we seek for meaning, peace, justice and life in our time and for our children. Andrew Marr relates that when he was endeavouring to tell the story of Britain through our poetry he discovered that the biggest gap between today and a thousand years ago was religious belief.” Go back to the poets and you see what enchanted, brightly coloured, dramatic lives they led. Everything had meaning--- plants and trees had symbolic meanings, the lives of animals told exemplary stories and saints haunted the wildwood.” This no longer happens in our modern world and yet is still captured by our children. Our culture is so bereft of mystery. Our country and culture
is too often described as essentially Christian but is it? Marr reflects “We have been freed from that enchanted world and scattered out into an almost wholly material civilisation, a city centre in which the only thing left standing is the market. It is too thin this gruel.” Today’s story is illustrated by materialism and consumption, with unnecessary spending, widening gaps between rich and poor and exploitation. It is a narrative that lacks imagination. Since the Twin Towers at the beginning of the century there have been wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, interventions in Syria and Libya. Whilst the West has hesitated radical, political Islam has grown stronger. At the same time the Church in the West has struggled and attendance and allegiance have declined. Perhaps it is time to reflect on what we have done with the good tidings of great joy to all people. Have we lost the wonder and the mystery? Perhaps it is time to ask fundamental questions and take whatever steps are necessary to re-imagine church life. We need to begin with people, with our families, our neighbours and our friends and meet them where they are .This is where the Christian story begins, with a mother, a family, ordinary folk and it is where Jesus always begins with where people are, taking seriously their stories and inviting them to see things in the light of the bigger story of what God is doing. This is the way ahead for the Church, to open the door, to recognise the need for conversation, for giving, receiving, sharing and being there. In the city of Florence in 1501 Michelangelo inspected a tall block of marble that had been discarded by two other sculptors who thought it so damaged it had no possible value. Continued on page 5

Two years later it had become the masterpiece of the statue of David. Asked to explain himself Michelangelo replied that he looked for the angel living inside it and that his job as an artist was to release the angel
5 inside so as to enrich the life of others. May we rediscover this imagination so that there are good tidings of great joy for us and for all God’s children. Stanley
BRAMHAM CHURCHYARD We feel that there has been a marked improvement and we hope to continue to keep the area under continuous mowing. This should keep the whole Churchyard tidier for everybody to enjoy. We have been greatly impressed by your efforts to keep the graves well tended and supplied with flowers and thank you for this work, which we all know takes time out of busy schedules. By the Diocesan Churchyard Regulations we are allowed to leave Christmas wreaths in place for two months and are then supposed to clear them away. This is also desirable as many of them have wire frames which will damage the mowers and strimmers. We will therefore have a clearing session on Saturday 5th March and would ask anyone who has decorations/flowers which they wish to keep to take them away before then. We have no wish to cause any of you distress in this matter. Please be aware that we are bound by regulations from the Diocese of York and that if you have any queries about what is allowed to be put on the graves or Ashes Garth please do not hesitate to contact us. Finally if there are any villagers who have the time and energy to help maintain the Saxon Graveyard of Bramham please contact the Churchwardens and we will happily use your enthusiasm to the benefit of the village. It may be more satisfying and certainly cheaper than going to the gym! Chips Browning Churchwarden

We started the New Year at Stepping Stones learning about the Baptism of Jesus. The children made some beautiful paper doves , using their hands to draw around for the shape… the thumb forming the neck of the dove and the fingers were the feathers. They then went up to the sanctuary and sat with Kate Kennedy (the youth coordinator for the churches) and used the doves and the very sparkly River Jordan (that we made last year) to act out the story of Jesus’ Baptism. We had someone representing Mount Hermon at one end of the River and another was the Dead Sea at the other end, then we had John the Baptist and Jesus. They learned that John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin (2nd) and they were set the challenge to find out how long the River Jordan is…. Answers on a postcard and bring to the February stepping stones! Stepping Stones is open for any child to attend regardless if they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 12th February at All Saints Church - 5.30pm….the theme will be Valentines.
The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk.

January 2016 update ....communica ng with residents To All Bramham Residents: Update from the November meeting Senior Citizens’ Centre We are continuing to investigate costs of installing a toilet at the Senior Citizens’ Centre, and other necessary improvements. We are also looking at the costs of replacing the building entirely. We are hoping to commission a feasibility study within the next couple of months following this we will consult with residents. Defibrillators: One of the defibrillators purchased by the Parish Council is now installed at the Village Hall and is linked up to the emergency services. The second one will be installed in the decommissioned phone box on Lyndon Avenue shortly. Defibrillators are easy to use and can save lives. Awareness sessions have been arranged for Saturday 19th March 11.00am to 1.00pm at the village hall, please come along, all interested residents welcome. Transport Scheme update Our Transport Scheme has now been running for just over a year; many would say we are victims of our own success, with over 120 clients now registered to use the service. As a result we desperately need additional volunteer drivers please…do you think you could help? For those that don’t know, the scheme provides a cost effective way for the over 60’s to get to appointments, meet friends and attend the wide variety of social activities that the Wetherby area has to offer. We would like to take the opportunity of thanking our fantastic existing volunteers who continue to donate their time but we really do need more people just like them. If you think you can help or would like to find out more please contact Bridget Tasker or Greg Webster, our WiSE Transport Coordinators by calling the WiSE office on 01937 222066. Alternatively please email them at transport@w-ise.org.uk
SHOEBOX APPEAL In the weeks before Christmas we launched the Shoebox Appeal when we asked for gifts for people in need. The appeal focussed on two groups, the homeless and children. There was a wonderful response and 58 shoe boxes were received in church evenly split for both groups. The children of Leeds Women’s Aid were delighted with their gifts and the homeless at St George’s Crypt welcomed the warm clothing in their shoeboxes. Both organisations wish to express their gratitude for these unexpected gifts. Thank you to the donors for the Christmas cheer and for confirming the generosity of our community. Stanley Menzies

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS IN BRAMHAM WHERE IT ALL CAME FROM….. We have had a Christmas Tree in the village for some years now and last year we managed to obtain grants to erect motifs on 6 lamp posts along Front Street. The "one off" costs of installing the electrics was £550 per light (totalling £3300) and we raised the money by way of a grant from Bramham Parish Council. We decided to hire the individual motifs from Leeds City Council and these cost £195 plus vat to hire. Money for this came from a grant we received from the Community Fund. CAN YOU HELP? This year we hope to hire the motifs again and need companies or individuals to sponsor each motif. Each motif will cost £200 plus vat (£240) and we need your support. If you are willing to sponsor a motif next year please let me know.

VILLAGE HALL NEWS Happy Cats, 23rd April 2016 The next Village Hall fundraiser will be on 23rd April 2016 when Happy Cats will be performing as part of a UK Tour. “A drop of the Irish, a hot spoonful of salsa, a twist of Tamla, shake it all up with thirty years of Rock and Roll experience and garnish with good humour – there you have The Happy Cats”. One band member, Marty Craggs, was part of Lindesfarne from the early 1980s to 2000 so may be familiar to some of the audience. Profits will be put towards the continuing refurbishment of the hall (see below re the new door) Tickets will be on sale (probably at the Village Shop) from early April, or you can order tickets via the email (bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com) or phone/text 07432 330972.
Improved access to supper room The access to the supper room was improved during 2015 by the building of a widened path along the side of the Supper Room. The Committee asks that users of the hall do NOT try to climb down what remains of the soil covered area (this will be walled over during 2016). During 2016 we hope to install new external doors from the supper room to further improve access, especially for users who book just the supper room (they won’t have to use the main hall access).
Catering at the Village hall The hall does not provide a catering service, though has facilities and crockery/cutlery for events. The Committee would like to collate a list of local caterers to whom we can refer customers booking the hall. If you (or your friends/family) would like to be included on the list please submit details to the email address below, or post details or some business cards through the Village Hall letter box.
Bookings for 2016 Please remember to book the hall early if you have a special event in 2016. We have already taken several bookings and don't want residents to be disappointed. Prices are currently the same as 2015, which includes a 3 hour party package for children’s parties on Saturdays and Sundays for bookings between 11am and 5pm.
The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. WETHERBY RUFC Wetherby’s remarkable run very nearly came to an end on the 9th January with Northallerton leading 17-0 well into the second half but a fantastic fight back saw the Reds winning 24-17. A more comfortable victory took place on the 16th with Leeds Medics and Dentists the victims 61-17. The unbeaten run now extends to 49 games with 2343 points scored. The Crusaders lost for the first time in January but are well clear at the top of their Merit Table. Wetherby now boast a Ladies Team and would welcome any new players. Previous experience is not necessary and it is a good way of getting fit. Anyone interested should contact Jess Molly on 07864711465. BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Happy New Year to everyone and welcome to the New Year for Bramham in Bloom. At the AGM in October 2015 we presented commemorative rose bowls to Gill Young, Meryl and Ernest Nichols to mark their ten years leading Bramham in Bloom towards two Gold Awards in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The new committee and I will hopefully continue the good work in and around the village with the help of our sponsors, gardeners and residents of the village. We will be supported by our retired committee and look to them for the advice and expertise over the coming year which they are very willing to offer. In the Autumn we began by planting two sacks of new daffodil bulbs around the village, all donated by Red Hall Nursery. This was followed by a plant stall at the very successful “Christmas Switch On evening in the square.
The new Committee comprises Kate Pirie, Rochelle Page, Pam Corrigan, Alison French, all Bramham residents and myself as the new Chair. We are all looking forward to a very exciting year ahead. There are many varied ways in which you can help Bramham in Bloom which do not involve actual gardening so, if you are interested:

FAKES AND FORGERIES AT THE LINTON ANTIQUE SOCIETY A constant problem for antique dealers and auctioneers is how to determine whether the goods they sell are authentic. Robert Soper, in his 30 years in the antiques trade, often dealt with such issues and the identification of items that were ‘not quite right’. A specialist in Chinese Porcelain and Early English watercolours, his talk at Linton Memorial Hall on Thursday 11th February at 8.00pm will cover Chinese monochromes, false marks on porcelain, verifying watercolours and the problem of furniture, where faking takes place on an industrial scale. He will also reminisce about the Harrogate forger Gordon Wright. Entrance is free to Society members but non-members are also welcome: entrance is £5.00 on the door. Contact Mrs Barbara Hepburn on 01937 582243 to join or download the form on the Society’s website www.lintonantiquesociety.org.uk Next talk: 10th March 2016, 8.00pm: Madame de Pompadour and Sèvres Porcelain with Nicolas Merchant.

Who is NJOY? Founded by Jo Edwards in January 2016 with a commitment to deliver FRESH, LOCAL, BALANCED and VARIED meals to your home. This can be in the format of a Takeaway, Private Dining or a Dinner Party in a Box. Always thinking about making it easy for you! The takeaway menu will change monthly and will represent all types of dishes from around the world.
All the World’s a Menu Each month we will feature a recipe from a different country using produce that is in season. This month we travel to Ireland with a recipe for Colcannon - Colcannon is a traditional Irish dish mainly consisting of mashed potatoes with kale or cabbage. Irish cuisine is known for being hearty, comprising of soups, stews, potatoes, soda bread and not forgetting whiskey and stout.
Recipe of the Month What’s in Season? Cauliflower Leeks Purple Sprouting Broccoli Cabbage Kale Parsnips Horseradish Jerusalem Ar chokes Blood Oranges Clams Cockles Oysters Mussels Sea Bass Truffles Venison
COLCANNON (Serves 4 as a side, 2 as a main) 500g / 1lb 2oz Floury Potatoes, cooked 250g / 9 oz cabbage, shredded and lightly steamed 2 tbsp. cream (op onal) salt and black pepper 1 large or 2 small onions, thinly sliced Oil for frying Prepara9on Sieve or Mash the potatoes and mix with the cabbage & cream. Season well with salt and pepper. Fry the onion in the fat over a moderate heat un l it is so7 and beginning to brown. Using a spatula, press half the potato and cabbage mixture in an even layer onto the onion and fry for 4-5 minutes un l it is well browned and crispy underneath. Cut the mixture into 4 quarters and turn them over so that the crusty bit is uppermost. Press the remaining potato and cabbage mixture on to the first layer and a7er a few more minutes, cut and turn again. When the bo;om is again browned, you will have a crispy top too, a crispy bo;om, and a crispy layer in the middle.

CAROLS ROUND THE CHRISTMAS TREE Despite the recent poor weather the evening was dry and for the time of year warm. There was an excellent turnout and people were even standing in the street.
It was also great to see so many children who were clearly enjoying themselves.
The singing was well organised by Stanley Menzies and as usual the music by Simon Noble exceptional, he really doesn’t seem to feel the cold.
Many many thanks to Mavis and her team for organising the evening and providing the refreshments. None of these events just happen and there is a lot of work involved.
This is a lovely start to Christmas and really does create a feeling of community and togetherness.
The collection for Yorkshire Air Ambulance was ÂŁ140

Thought for the month Time is free, but it’s priceless. You can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it you can never get it back. Harvey MacKay
A SMILE FOR FEBRUARY A teacher was testing the children in her Sunday school class to see if they understood the concept of getting to heaven. She asked them, "If I sold my house and my car, had a big garage sale and gave all my money to the church, would that get me into Heaven?" "NO!" the children answered. "If I cleaned the church every day, mowed the churchyard, and kept everything neat and tidy, would that get me into Heaven?" Again, the answer was, "NO! Now she was smiling. Hey, they're getting it, she thought! "Well, then, if I was kind to animals and gave sweets to all the children, and loved my husband, would that get me into Heaven?" she asked. Again, they all answered, "NO!" Now she was just bursting with pride for them. "Well," she continued, "then how can I get into Heaven?" A five-year-old boy shouted out, "YOU GOTTA BE DEAD."
