The Clergy Letter for February
Do you ever wonder, as other people talk of how they feel moved by the Holy Spirit, quite what they mean? I am sitting here at the computer with my fingers poised over the keys with no real idea what to start out saying to you all. Now that it is just Rev Jane and myself taking alternate turns at writing these letters to you, my turn seems to crop up too quickly! To get back to the poised fingers….. I have to admit to relying on the Spirit to prompt me many times in my endeavours. I can hear you saying, ‘but what has this to do with me and my daily tasks and troubles?’ Have a think about the many times you have found the right words to say to a friend in need, or been in the right place at the right time to help someone else. Do you really believe those times and words are a chance occurrence? Remember what Jesus said to his disciples, ’the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything.’ (John 14:23) If you reflect on these words do you still think there can possibly be an element of ‘chance’ in your helping ways? As you found those words and helping ways, think about the number of times there have been friends there for you, or a stranger who has been in just the right place and time; amazing isn’t it? The Spirit is keeping an eye out for us all! I can now hear you saying, ‘Ah! But what about the time when……’ , and I can reply by suggesting that perhaps you are thinking about needing a nanny who shields you from all the hard bits in life! We do come up against brick walls sometimes, and regret not being there for a certain person or situation, but remember the Advocate is there to ‘teach you everything’. How do we grow into the person Jesus wants us to be if we do not reflect on our experiences and learn from them?

The season of Lent begins this month and it is a time to reflect and examine where Jesus is in our lives and just how much his life has a bearing on ours today. One of the things I suggest you, and I, do is to make ourselves more aware of those times in our days when the Holy Spirit gives us a those words and deeds for others, or helps us in our difficulties. By acknowledging the presence of the Spirit we become more aware of the love that is in our lives, simply by looking and listening to that presence we can be sure that God is with us all day and every day. Matthew’s Gospel told us in the readings we read and heard at Christmas that Immanuel was born (Matt 1:23) and that name meant ‘God is with us’. Look and listen and you will see and hear all that is done for us. So, now back to my poised fingers…….. Rev Trish ————————————————————————————

January 2018 Update ....communicating with residents NEW COUNCILLOR – We are very pleased to welcome a new councillor, David Hopps. David is eager to have a chance to contribute to Bramham’s community. ‘We now have a full Parish Council. BRAMHAM HOUSE: DEVELOPERS Q&A The developers who have an interest in developing the Bramham House site to incorporate a residential care home, 4 and 5 bedroom houses, and apartments, gave an informal presentation before the last Parish Council meeting. Key issues raised by residents and councillors were concerns about access to the site and the lack of affordable housing for young people (the affordable housing in their proposal is for over 55s). The developers were asked to consider the comments and invited to give a further session, this time in the Village Hall which has more space. We will keep you informed regarding a date. Please check the website. If you would like to contact the developers directly the contact is Andrew Windress, Andrew.windress@idplanning.co.uk NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN SURVEY CLOSING DATE 12TH FEBRUARY PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO COMPLETE your Neighbourhood Plan summary and survey. this is our opportunity to influence our village’s future. Bramham Community Fund Exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets at the Leeds Festival together with other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £320,000. The last allocation of grants, based on the 2016 Festival took place in March 2017. It is planned that the allocations from the 2017 Festival will be considered in March 2018. The Fund is therefore now accepting applications. The closing date is 14 February 2018. To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, Bramham, LS23 6RS or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. Proposed projects should normally be completed within one year of the grant being awarded. If a project is expected to exceed that timescale, the application should indicate as such. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool

Memorial Safety in Bramham Churchyard There are rules and regulations set by York Diocese for the introduction of a memorial into the Churchyard. No memorial should be placed on a grave without permission first being sought from the priest in charge. Memorial safety within the churchyard is very important and over the next few months a safety inspection will be carried out to ensure that all memorials are safe and will not be a safety issue. Memorials will be tested by qualified assessors. The memorials will be categorised into risk areas – High, Medium and Low. Those in high risk areas will either be laid flat immediately on the grave or staked and banded. If there is a safety issue with your family memorial, the Memorial Mason who supplied your memorial will be able to rectify the safety problem and bring the memorial to the correct modern fixing standards and comply with the National Association of Memorial Masons( NAMM) Code of working practice and British Standard 8415. Please contact the Churchwardens for further information.

NEW BABY & TODDLER GROUP AT ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH BRAMHAM We are pleased to announce that we will be starting a new group – or rather expanding a well-established group – in Bramham church. We have been running a successful group called The Ark at St Mary’s Boston Spa for many years. As we have had so many families from Bramham attending, we have decided to run an extra session each month, here in Bramham. The Ark will continue to run twice per month at Boston Spa, then will run at Bramham once a month. Both groups will run on Thursday from 1.45pm-3pm and follow a very similar format, involving toys and crafts, stories and songs, as well as refreshments. See the details below for dates and contact details.

BRAMHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT PLAN
This is just a reminder that the draft Bramham Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) was completed and submitted to Leeds City Council for the statutory Regulation 14 Consultation on Monday 18th December 2017, the consultation period lasting until Monday 12th February 2018. Combined summaries of the draft NDP and a survey document have been delivered to every parish resident with a cover letter explaining the process and detailing a link to the online full draft NDP and the online survey. There will also be a public drop-in session on Saturday 10th February 2018 in the Village Hall from 10am to 1pm, where we will try to answer any questions on the Plan. Please do remember that our NPD will set out the vision of the residents of the Parish for future development in Bramham during the period up to the year 2033 and will have legal status. It is your final opportunity to affect the content of this draft NDP and help to influence any future development. It is therefore very important that it reflects your views. Please do respond to the survey. Paul Marshall Chair, Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group 23

Session dates will be 20th Feb, 27th Feb, 6th March, 13th March & 20th March. Ideally participants will attend all 5 sessions, but you are welcome to any you can manage. Group members will benefit greatly from having their own personal copy of the course booklet – a contribution of £3.60 per person is invited but not compulsory If you wish to attend, please contact the Parish Office so that a booklet can be ordered for you. Come and along and experience this vivid and moving start to our Lenten journey. Lent is about mortality and transformation. We begin the season of Lent on Ash Wednesday with the sign of the cross smeared on our foreheads with ashes as the words are spoken over us, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ." We begin this season of Lent not only reminded of our death, but also marked for death. Depressing, you may think! But, this is the start of a wonderful and poignant journey towards Easter. The Lenten journey, with its climax in Holy Week and Good Friday and Easter, is about participating in the death and resurrection of Jesus. It is a journey of transformation – dying to our old lives and being born (or reborn) into a new way of being, a way of being centred once again in God. We need to stop and look at our lives—remember what we are made of, remember where we are going—and let go of all those things that don't really matter, all those things that get in the way of loving God, loving others, and being loved by God and by others. What better way to start Lent!
Hope to see you there…..

CHRISTMAS LUNCH a huge thank you to everyone who made the first Bramham Community Christmas Lunch such a huge success. We hope that we can repeat it next year as a true community event for anyone on their own. Christine Dalton

Why not volunteer for us? Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, use hidden talents and gain a real sense of community. If you have as little as an hour to spare each week or month you could help to make a real difference. Help people in your community live well with Dementia…Dementia Forward, in association with WiSE host ‘Meet-up Monday’ from 1.00pm to 3.00pm every Monday afternoon at St Joseph’s RC Church Hall, 20 Westgate, Wetherby, LS22 6LL. The Cafe offers a meeting point with support for carers and people experiencing memory loss in a lovely, friendly environment. They would very much welcome your time and help with activities, games and refreshments. Volunteers with previous experience of Dementia among family and friends would be particularly welcome, although this is by no means essential. Assist in the WiSE Owl Café and kitchen, Boston Spa Village Hall… Our lovely volunteers work the hours that suit them with people from all walks of life. As well as working well under pressure and being part of a team they have good numeracy and communication skills. A genuine smile and a friendly “Hello!” both go a long way to make our visitors feel welcome; especially if they’ve come for the first time or they’re visiting us alone. For further information, please contact Carole McLelland our WiSE Volunteer and Community Coordinator on 01937 588994 or email carole@wise.org.uk Alternatively, why not become a volunteer driver for our Transport Scheme…If you have a car and a little time to spare then we’d love to hear from you. The WiSE Transport Scheme provides a cost effective way for the over 60’s to get to appointments, meet friends and attend the wide variety of social activities that the Wetherby area has to offer. You won’t need to commit to specific times or days so you’ll have lots of flexibility. In return for your time, we’ll cover the journey costs and you’ll be able to meet lovely local people and do something really meaningful in your community. To find out more please contact Bridget Tasker, our WiSE Transport Coordinator, by calling the WiSE office on 01937 222066. Alternatively please email her at transport@w-ise.org.uk

PRAYER IDEA – BLESSINGS JAR This idea is suitable for families and individuals. Why not give it a go during Lent? You may enjoy it so much you keep it going all year round! Take a jam jar, or similar container, and decorate it. Place the jar somewhere convenient for everyone that may use it, such as the kitchen table, and keep some small pieces of paper and pens with it. At least once each day, take a slip of paper, write down something for which you are thankful and put it in the jar. Hopefully some days you may have more than one thing to be thankful for! You may like to put a date on the blessing to help you remember. Make a routine of opening the jar once a week (together as a family), reading the slips and saying thank you to God for His blessings. You may also like to pray for those who do not have such blessings (for example, if you give thanks for a lovely meal, offer a prayer for those who are hungry). You might also like to keep them in a scrapbook, so you can be reminded in the future about some ways in which God has blessed you.
WANTED Someone to deliver the Parish Magazine on the outskirts of the village (Windmill Road, Toulson Lane and Warren Lane). Must be a car driver or a very enthusiastic walker! If you can spare about 30 minutes each month and would like to help, contact: Jillian 844858
