Clergy Letter from Rev ‘d Stanley Menzies
1
As a boy growing up in the central Highlands of Scotland the advent of the New Year was a significant and joyful occasion with the Hogmanay celebrations. It was also a time for reflection, looking back to the year that was past and looking forward to the year that was to come with resolution and hope. The custom of first-footing was well established when we greeted neighbours and strangers with the words “a Good New Year to you.” There was often the exchange of simple gifts, hospitality freely given, and doors open to strangers. But at the heart of it was the wish and the prayer; may the New Year be good for you, your family and for the wider family of the world. This simple greeting is deeply theological and strikingly appropriate as we enter 2013. This is a time for reflection, for being open to neighbours and strangers, realising we are all in this together not just in our own backyard but as part of the human family in the midst of all creation. It is a time for resolution that it should be a good year for the world. I suggested that the greeting of a good year to you has Biblical and theological roots. At the beginning of His ministry Jesus goes back to his hometown of Nazareth and on the Sabbath goes to the synagogue, a place of worship but also the community gathering place, the place where people come together to discuss, to think things through, to question and to reflect. Jesus stands up and reads from the prophet Isaiah,” the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to tell the poor good news, to proclaim release for prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, to let victims go free and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” Then Jesus says “today this has come true.” It is a good year for the poor, the outsiders, the victims. Jesus is reminding his Jewish people that this is the year of the Jubilee when all debts would be forgiven and slaves would be set free. It is a time of release, of forgiveness and rescue from all that cripples human life. How much our time needs such a year! We live in difficult and careless times but we also live alongside our neighbours and share our world with countless others who remain strangers to us but we are all related. As we begin this New Year. We should pause to consider our dependence on the giving of others and give thanks for those who serve us, the bakers, butchers, candlestickmakers and all who supply our needs. When we switch on the light or turn on the cooker we should remember the power workers and gas services. May we remember with gratitude those who drive vans buses, trains and trucks and those who maintain our infrastructures. We should bless those who care for our children, our sick and the infirm. May we pray for those who seek peace, truth and justice for nations and peoples and for the common good. May we spend more time in contemplation and value this gracious giving. This is the Lord’s doing and it is wonderful. As we set out on another year we do so in the company of our families, neighbours and fellow citizens. May we travel thoughtfully, caringly and lovingly. Listen to them as they walk with us. The wise man looking for a sign, wanting this world to be a fairer place, help me to use my influence and wisdom to change it. The widow who laments that she is poor and tired of being treated as a statistic and pushed to the margins like all poor people. Continued on page 2

3 Clergy Letter - continued from page 1
There is the old man waiting for death, weary and alone, pray for me and all older folk. There is the young mother waiting for her child to be born. I feel the new life inside me, I have great hopes for the child but long for this world to be a better place for my child. There is everyman and everywoman waiting, sometimes lonely, uncertain, hopeful, and longing to be loved. May it be a Good New Year for them. May it be a year of Jubilee when they find release, forgiveness and rescue from all that cripples human life. There is one final thought to ponder. Jesus delivered his Jubilee Year sermon in the synagogue, the place where people came together to discuss, to question to think things through and to listen. Perhaps the church can become again the place where we and our neighbours can meet to discuss, to have conversations, to listen, to reflect and keep silence. Some might call this worship, others simply meeting each other. In our communities we may have separate convictions but they should be held within a unity of respect for each other and thoughtfulness of the challenges facing us all. May we all have a good year.
Stanley

A lot of hard work, behind the scenes, went into organising this event, which is one of our main money raising events and raised £1,975 for Church funds. Thank you to Father Christmas’s helper for coming along to us again. We know he is very busy at this time of the year. Thank you to Charlie Hunter and Misha Kitchen, the two little elves who looked after him. 7 Snow Shovelling can be fun! And it’s a great way to burn off some calories and keep fit. So do you fancy joining the Bramham Team of Snow Shovelers? The Parish Council are looking to join in a new Leeds City Council initiative to help keep our village safe and accessible during snow fall and we need a group of volunteers from the village. The idea of the scheme is to encourage local people to assist the Highways Services in clearing priority locations at times of heavy snowfall, helping maintain accessibility in areas we may otherwise be unable to get to. The scheme would see volunteers working under the guidance of a ‘Snow Champion’ to clear snow from footways and pedestrian areas to allow people better access to bus stops, shops and other local services and amenities. What will be provided: A supply of bagged rock salt Snow shovels Fluorescent vests Information & advice leaflets on snow clearing Advance weather information when we receive a forecast of snow A Highways Services contact at one of our 3 operational depots What we are looking for to make this happen: A nominated ‘Snow Champion’ and a team of volunteers. The “Champion” will be the first point of contact and co-ordinate the team of volunteers. They will provide daily information on what has been done where and when and post-winter feedback on how things went. If you are interested in taking part please contact our clerk and we will be in touch. THE LAUNCH OF BRAMHAM VILLAGE ARCHIVE WEBSITE
9
On December 23rd 2012 the Bramham Archive website was launched. WWW.HISTORICBRAMHAM.ORG.UK Whilst not completed we consider that there is sufficient material online to stimulate and interest the residents of Bramham and others from over the world. We have digitised over 3000 documents/maps and photographs with associated descriptions on dozens of subjects relating to the history of Bramham and its surrounding area. Most of the material has been obtained from the physical archive that was created by former resident David Machin but of course we have received documents and photographs from other sources, a process we hope will continue and maybe stimulated by the release of the website. On the website you will find information on :THE BATTLE OF BRAMHAM MOOR The story of the battle. The battle information plaque ceremony. The gala following the ceremony. THE BRAMHAM ARCHIVE The main part of the website containing nearly 40 folders with sections containing the hundreds of images we have digitised. Each image has an explanatory description is zoomable for increased ease of reading and a downloadable PDF is provided for even more ease of access and the printing of a hard copy. OVER THE CENTURIES The story of Bramham with sections on the battles that were fought around the village, it’s geographic situation, religious history, famous houses in the area and much more. BRAMHAM - THE VILLAGE IN TIMES PAST Based very closely on the book by the same name published by The Bramham In Times Past 1994 team you can read a pictorial record of the area as you take an imaginary walk around the village. BRAMHAM HOUSE The fascinating history of former stately home Bramham House with its involvement with the major families in the area, right through to its purchase by local authorities and its use as a children’s home. Included is the story of one of the residents of the home and its influence on his life. Now fallen into disrepair the house is awaiting demolition and the land it sits on used for a modern development.

Bramham Parish Council December Update ....communicating with residents
To all Bramham residents Update from the December meeting: The December meeting was held in The Village Hall and it was nice to see a number of residents join us for coffee and mince pies. Please remember you are always welcome to come along to our meetings and to share any views or ideas on how we can work together to ensure our village continues to thrive. Bramham Village Archive: After many months (even years!) of hard work by Neil Ferres, digitalising the physical archive of information and photographs, Bramham Village Archive is now on line. Neil is providing a separate update in this magazine, so it is just for the Council to say a very grateful thank you to Neil for providing this fantastic facility. It really is a fascinating collection. Thank you also to Ian Watson, Anne Palmer, Dorothy Menzies and Bob Gibson, for the help they have given Neil. You can access the archive via the Council and village website at www.thisisbramham.co.uk. Then click on Village History. Do have a look! The Parish Council Website: Lots of committee leaders attended a briefing about how to add content to their sections of the website and this has resulted in lots of new stories and content appearing on the site. The website also has a new section for blogs too. Keep browsing the new site and “Like” it too on facebook to keep the traffic coming! Neighbourhood Plan: Cllr Innocent advised that we will find out whether or not Leeds City Council (LCC) will include the proposed 5,000 house site on the University land on the list of potential development sites, early next year. If it is included we will be consulting you all to get your views so that we can feed back to LCC. Pavilion and Option Agreement: LCC continue to tell us that they will be exercising the option agreement to purchase the strip of land on Freely Lane in exchange for the £250k that has been agreed. However their latest communication to the council indicated a change in timescales so we are trying to clarify the position and will continue to keep you updated with any news in this regard. Until the parish council receives this money from the sale of land we cannot provide the BSLA with the funds (£108k) needed to complete the pavilion. We acknowledge that this is a frustration but want to assure you, once again, that the council is committed to driving this forward, seeing the pavilion complete as soon as possible, and consulting the village about spend of the remaining £142k. Playground and field: Repairs have been carried out to the playground. We still need to repair the matting in some places but other repairs are complete. We are liaising with LCC to have the rubbish from the burnt out bin area on the field removed.

17 AUCTION OF PROMISES CLIFFORD VILLAGE HALL 7.30pm on 8TH MARCH 2013
We are looking for Promises for our Auction of Promises which is going to be held at Clifford Village Hall on Friday 8th March in aid of the Lower Wharfe Youth Fund. If you can, bake, iron, garden, baby sit, or can offer a service that you think someone else would be willing to bid for, please consider offering a promise for the auction. St Mary’s previously held an Auction of Promises when they were fund raising for the Organ, it was a great success and people offered all sorts of things from trips to the airport, a delivery of free range eggs every week, a dinner party and other “money can’t buy” experiences. So please put your thinking cap on and see what you can offer, its great fun and you’ll be surprised what someone will pay for your promise! Please put the date in your diary and come along on the evening, there will be a supper included with the ticket and it will all help to raise valuable funds for our Youth Work. There will be more details nearer the time. Please contact Kate Lofthouse (thelofthousefamily@btconnect.com), Paul or Philippa Martin (broadyards@btinternet.com), or Kate Kennedy (ckennedy@legatomarketing.co.uk) with your Promise offers. Thank you for your support.

23 BRAMHAM GUIDES It is with regret I have to let you all know that we have closed the Bramham Guide unit. After 5 years of asking for people to come forward to become leaders we have finally given up asking and have closed the unit. I am no longer able to continue without committed adult leadership to help. Thank you to Sue who has been helping this last year but due to university commitments she can not take on the leadership. We did not take this decision lightly. I have enjoyed running Bramham Guides for the past 17 years, however, sometimes you have to put family first. I will transfer to Clifford Guide unit and am taking 6 Guides with me; thank you to Clifford Guide Leaders for taking us. Thank you to all the Guides and parents for their understanding and good wishes over the past few months Fiona Henderson
DRAMA GROUP The pantomime was directed this year by new young joint directors Ben Strangeway and Jennifer Beaumont with a cast and crew of over 60 people who brought the story of Aladdin to life on stage in Bramham Village Hall. This year also saw several new faces in the show and backstage, alongside the not so new ones. The show was cast in July and production rehearsals commenced in September. The team dedicate an enormous amount of time to make Bramham Pantomime one of the most talked about village pantomimes with people travelling far and wide to come and enjoy the show. A big well done to everyone who once again put on a fabulous show; every performance was a sell out with over 150 people at each one. If you missed the show or would like to watch it again … DVD’s are available for just £5. For more information please email jen_beaumont@hotmail.co.uk. If you are interested in joining the drama group in any capacity - on stage, backstage, technical (sound, lighting, set building) - please contact bramhamdramagroup@gmail.com or phone and leave a message on the dedicated drama phone line 07747 778536.

THANK YOU to all the cast of Aladdin I went to see our Village Pantomime and was bowled over by the whole event. It was so professionally produced and the outfits were lovely. Everyone played their parts well, but in my opinion Cy was the star of the show. Everything came to life when he came on to the stage. It was good to see the dancers take a bigger part this year. The Little Beggars were a joy to see. Also liked the professional looking programme. Well done to all and keep it up!! Anon but name supplied

Discoverers @ Bramham
27
The December Discoverers session was our one and only rehearsal for the Nativity at the Crib Service on Christmas Eve. The children did a fantastic job remembering their lines and singing Little Donkey. We then had a Christmas party after the rehearsal with lots of yummy sandwiches, mince pies & party rings...mmmm.... Discoverers in January will be at a new time and place. It will be held on Sunday 13th January at 9.15am – 9.50am in the Village Hall. We will be learning about and making a ‘Christingle’, so if you could bring an orange with you to decorate that would be great! We will then head over to Church for to the Family Service at 10am. We really hope you can join us. If you would like more details about Discoverers, please contact:Lisa Revolta lisa@lisarevolta,com or Emma Hunter
emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com
or Jennie Saynor Jen@saynor.me.uk
These events are open to all regardless of whether you attend any Church or not. It is simply a way to meet other families in the community with young children ALL ARE WELCOME. We politely ask for a voluntary donation of £1 per child.

ROLY BAIN
As part of St Mary’s Church Bi-centennial celebrations, we were delighted to have the Revd Roly Bain spend a few days with us over the first weekend of Advent. Roly is an ordained Priest in the Church of England and a professional clown, and combines these two vocations to create a hugely entertaining and unique way of sharing the Christian message. On the Friday, the church was packed out with children from our local schools who were given the first taste of Roly’s act. He then visited Holy Mackerels in the evening, sharing a meal with the young people before involving them, and the leaders, in attempting various circus tricks including plate spinning, pole balancing, Diablo, mini-pedalling, juggling, and balancing tricks! It was chaotic as you can imagine. On Saturday, St Mary’s hosted a clown workshop called ‘Fun, Faith & Foolishness’, where the children were treated to Roly’s slack rope act, circus tricks, and mad bicycle routine, whilst engaged in some wonderful story telling. The children then had lunch before breaking into groups to do crafts, games, and circus tricks (under the watchful eye of Roly). On Sunday, we were delighted to have Roly lead our all age worship service, where he got up to some mischief during the lighting of the Advent candle, and in other parts of the service too! Again he did his slack rope act as a ‘visual aid’ for his sermon which was hugely popular with children and adults alike. He then led the prayers using soap bubbles to help us all imagine our prayers floating towards God. Finally, Roly joined us for the Churches Together Advent service on Sunday afternoon, where he treated our ecumenical friends to further clown mayhem and slapstick. It has been a privilege to have Roly share something of his very special ministry with us, where the fun and madness of his act has been wonderfully combined with his sharing of the Gospel, and has contributed to making 2012 a very special year for St Mary’s Church. Rev’d Andy Grant
THE BRAMHAM RUNNING CLUB
33
“Keep calm and go for a run…!”
Instead of giving something up, how about taking up something new for 2013… The London Olympics seem like a long time ago during the long winter nights but why not see if you can find that motivation and try out the Running Club? It’s a great way to get fit, stay active and have fun …it also means you don’t have to give anything up for a New Year resolution! Between October and December 2012 we had clocked up over 1400 miles… and 2012 was a year with plenty achievements to shout about for the Running Club as well as Team GB…! Jess Learmonth made a name for herself in the Triathlon world after 2 impressive wins at the Tadcaster and Wetherby Triathlons, followed by invitations to start amongst the best in the world at a number of elite triathlons, including one at Blenheim Palace! Alison Mackie took part in the London Marathon and ran the whole 26.2 miles in a Cinderella costume to raise money and awareness for The Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and Bramham Village Hall. Four ladies of the running club took part in our Queenathon event in celebration of the Queen’s Jubilee and London 2012. This was an Olympic distance triathlon…which they did in the pouring rain on the May Bank Holiday! Well done girls! The Major Series came to Bramham Park twice in 2012. In October 7 members took part in this gruelling challenge through the woods, streams and mud around the estate… one member even somehow managed to get herself over the finish line as first lady… J To finish off a fab year, 6 members donned their Santa outfits (beards included) and ho ho ho’d around the 5km Santa Run at Stockeld Park… Visit the village website www.thisisbramham.org.uk for photos! This is to name a mere few highlights in a year full of great successes; well done to everyone who set themselves a goal and got out there to achieve it! BRAMHAM IN BLOOM This is not vandalism it’s theft Just before the beds at the top of Bowcliffe Road were planted for the Spring both the conifers were stolen. Now one of the new conifer has been taken and also a number of plants. It is difficult, if not impossible, to get replacements at this time of year and whilst the remaining plants will be spread to cover the gaps ,the display in Spring will still not be as it should be. Bowcliffe is rather isolated but will you please keep an eye open particularly if you see a car parked near the beds. The plants were carefully taken pointing to adults rather than teenage vandals. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS IN CHURCH All Saints’ looked magnificent again this year; so thank you to everyone who helped to make it look so special. Our team of regular flower arrangers really did us proud. Our grateful thanks to Ms Pippa Hudson, for supplying and decorating the tree. Pippa used all blue lights and silver baubles and it really did look superb. Last year we said it was the best tree we had, but we must correct that statement, because we think this year it was the best we have seen. Thank You Pippa!
BANDS COMING SOON TO BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL!

SATURDAY 9th FEBRUARY WILLIE NILE return of superb singer song-writer from New York – this will sell-out!!! Unfortunately, Willie Nile has rescheduled his Winter tour so this gig is cancelled. We have not been given a date on the rescheduled tour because he is now committed to playing The New Roscoe in Leeds on Thursday 24 th April. He is touring again in Autumn 2013.and I am hopeful that he will return to Bramham then. Thanks for the support for the recent gigs and for the interest in Willie Nile – it is much appreciated.
Keith Robinson (01937 845 651) THANK-YOU TO THE VILLAGE SHOP To Andrea, Joanne and Zoe The Shop has been very supportive to the Church (as usual) by selling our Calendars and Christmas Cards. This venture of producing the Calendars is something new, and we are very indebted to Andrea and Joanne for helping us to sell them. As many of you will know our ancient parish church has been in the Village since 1150 and it is always a struggle to make ends meet. The general running costs are high and just keeping the church door open is a tremendous effort for us. The weekly expenditure is £1000 and the income is now well short of this figure and we rely heavily on fund raising events such as this. So thank you very much to the Shop, and to everyone who has bought a copy. We still have a few left if you haven’t already bought one.!!

Thought for the Month
The January smile - Why Do Men Rarely Get Depressed! Men are just happier people - what do you expect from such simple creatures? Their name stays the same, the garage is theirs, wedding plans take care of themselves. They can never get pregnant. Car mechanics tell them the truth. They can wear a white T-shirt in a swimming pool. They don’t have to stop and think of which way to turn a nut on a bolt. Same work, more pay. Wrinkles add character. Wedding dress £2000 a Tux rental £100. New shoes don’t cut, blister or mangle their feet. They have one wallet and one pair of shoes, one colour for all seasons. Phone conversations are over in 30 seconds flat. A five-day holiday requires only one suitcase. They can open all their own jars. Their underwear is £5 for a three-pack. Three pairs of shoes are more than enough. The same hairstyle last for years, even decades. They can ‘do’ their nails with a pocket knife. They can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on 24th December in 25 mins.
I could go on!!!!..........
