Clergy Letter from Rev’d Stanley Menzies The advent of a new year provides the opportunity for leaders of nations, governments and churches to deliver messages of hope and intent to the people. It is a time for reflection and resolution accompanied by the greeting, A Good New Year to you. This greeting is profoundly theological and hints at something beyond material success. It suggests something more spiritual and expresses the hope that our generation will find a way to value wellbeing over wealth and the common good over personal gain. There is a story in the Gospels that is pertinent to this hope and strikingly contemporary. The story of the blind beggar, Bartimaeus, and his encounter with Jesus. Bartimaeus was sitting by the road in Jericho begging when he heard that Jesus was coming, he began to shout out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me. Many told him to be quiet and so the more he shouted. Jesus heard him and said bring him to me. When the blind beggar was told he threw off his cloak and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him,” What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man replied,” Teacher let me see again.” Jesus restores his sight. Tom Wright tells us that one of the best sermons he ever heard was on the theme of the blind man’s coat. The cloak was Bartimaeus’ security; shade in summer, warmth in winter. It functioned like a small tent in which the few possessions the blind man had could be kept in relative security. All the more surprising then, that when they told him Jesus was coming he flung his cloak aside, jumped up and came to Jesus. This stands, so the preacher pointed out, as a signpost to us all. There may be many

things, including possessions which give us security as the cloak did for the blind man. It may be respectability, proper conduct, the refusal to take risks. It is not only individuals who wrap the cloak around them, so do organisations, countries and churches. We should reflect on what we wrap around us. And when Jesus calls, the sign that we are ready to do business with him is when we fling the cloak aside. Today the church is wrapped in a cloak, huddled and anxious. We are facing up to the reality of decline that has been affecting all the major denominations for the past fifty years and realising that to continue as we are may be comfortable but institutionally suicidal. Our options are simple. We do nothing and the decline continues or we ask fundamental questions about how faithful discipleship is performed in our time and take imaginative steps to re-order church life. This is not really an option, it is the call of Jesus to fling the cloak aside and to step out in faith into the unknown in the knowledge that we are not alone and that our Lord may well be ahead of us. But there is another dimension to the story of Bartimaeus which helps us to consider our hope for a good new year. Here is a beggar asking for money, for help in his need and he hears that someone important is coming, he has heard something of this Jesus and his hopes are up. Just pause for a moment and reflect what might be going through Bartimaeus’ head, what should I ask for. Then Jesus arrives and tells the disciples to bring Bartimaeus to him.

5 Continued from page 3 He replies “Teacher let me see again.” This is the life-changing moment, Bartimaeus’ plea is momentous, let me see again, an end to the begging, a beginning to a new journey. This story is profoundly relevant to our world and our time. We live in fearful and difficult days. There are many beggars, refugees and deeply anxious people. Our social fabric is very frail and in our country as across the West our institutions are failing. They and we are being asked the fundamental question what do you want and if we would listen intently the question comes from the divine, what do you want me to do for you? Sometimes I think it is almost impossible to hear the question as we are too ready with our own answers to the problems that beset us. We need more growth, more austerity, more discipline, less freeloading. Our party has the answer, our opponents don’t get it. The leaders of nations, our leaders and institutions and the

church have to get out of their tents, fling off their cloaks and be confronted by the question. The only response is let me see again. Politicians and leaders of industry, commerce and social organisations often talk about the vision thing without realising what it is to see again. When Jesus comes calling, when God intervenes it is always with the question and our part in the encounter is the response. It is a time for humility, in the words of the prophet, to do justly and to love kindness and walk wisely with your God. Jesus granted the blind beggar his heartfelt plea and let him see again. This is not the end of the story but the beginning of a new story. Off you go says Jesus on a journey where you will see and begin to understand the opportunities for service and the hopes and joys of living with and for your neighbours. May we do this in 2014 and it will be a good year. Stanley

HOME COMMUNIONS How well do you know your friends and neighbours? Are they housebound, temporarily indoors from injury, operation or sickness? Do you call in and chat or do their shopping? Are they feeling locked in? If you think that your friends or neighbours would benefit from a visit from our Pastoral Team, or would like home communion, talk to them and check that your feeling is correct. The next job is to contact Rev Trish on 01937 789 or Glenda at the Parish Office. All referrals are treated in the strictest of confidence and names and circumstances are never passed onto anyone else without permission. Home communion can be of the greatest of comfort to people who feel disconnected with their church or miss regular worship with their congregation. Giving them the opportunity to join in or talk could be the most helpful thing you could do today. Thank you

Rev Trish

7 CHRISTMAS AT BRAMHAM CHURCH All Saints’ looked splendid again this year, so thank you to everyone who helped to make it look so special. Our grateful thanks must go to Pippa Hudson for supplying and decorating the magnificent tree. Each year we say it couldn’t get better, but it did. So thank you so much Pippa. It really can’t get any better!! The Village Church Council would like to thank everyone who were involved with organising and running the Church Bazaar. A lot of hard work, behind the scenes went into organising this event, which is one of our main money raising events and it raised approximately £1800 for Church Funds. Father Christmas was too busy to come himself, but he sent one of his helpers to give presents to Bramham children!!

Our splendid tree

The Crib Service was the high light of our Christmas Festivities and the children of Stepping Stones provided a lovely nativity play. The children were so enthusiastic and must have worked so hard to produce it so well.

Father Christmas arriving

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents

- Here is the update from our December Parish

Council meeting and latest developments: What a Christmas Tree! A very big Thank You to Cllr Keith Innocent for sorting out our fantastic Christmas Tree, and to Frank, Artie and Guy for helping to erect it, a feat that by all accounts could have been a You Tube hit! Also thank you to Cllr Scott Jones for fixing the lights. The Wildlife area & the Senior Citizens’ Centre: Thank you again to Frank and Artie for the brilliant job they have done throughout the year in keeping the garden looking so good, and for clearing overhanging trees in the wildlife area. Many thanks also to Mrs Blanchard for keeping the Centre itself so spick and span. Drop in event 7/8 February: Option Agreement monies: To remind you: The Parish Council has now agreed a process for village groups to make applications for projects and to put forward ideas for funding from the monies received from the sale of the strip of land. On the evening of Friday 7 February and on Saturday 8 February we will be holding an open ‘drop-in style’ event at the Village Hall where you can both put forward ideas and give your views on ideas put forward by others. There will also be further information about what sort of projects the money can be spent on, and other funding sources. Application forms will then be made available for formal applications, with a closing date of end of March 2013. If you are a village group considering a project, be ready to tell the village about it at the event. Neighbourhood Plan: The Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group will also be using the 7/8 February event to let you know more about the Neighbourhood Plan and to gather your views on Bramham’s future. Pavilion and Playing Field: A response has now been received from BSLA to the lease offered by the PC in April 2013 which the PC believe was largely consistent with any arrangement previously considered with BSLA. The lease offered has not been accepted by BSLA who are now seeking a substantial and long term interest (99 years) in the Playing Fields and Pavilion with minimal restriction as to their use and operation. Matters therefore remain with solicitors. Continued on page 11

OPEN DAY 7th and 8th February 2014 Bramham Village Hall Times will be announced in next months magazine or on the Parish Council website www.thisisbramham.co.uk Bramham Parish Council have £278,000 from the sale of the strip of land on Freely Lane and we want you as residents to help us decide how to spend it. So what happens next? There will be an open day for the village on the 7th/8th February when full details of the grant process will be available & community groups will be given the opportunity to display to the village their ideas for future projects. Residents can pop in and let us know what matters to you, what you like about Bramham, what you think we need for the future and how you would like to see the funds distributed in the village. Put your thinking caps on... • Do you have a project / idea that you think would benefit from some grant funding? Start to give some thought to what you would like to do, why, who would benefit, how much it might cost and what obstacles you may need to overcome. •

We suggest you contact the clerk or any councilor for a chat about any project ideas you may have so we can help advise what is the best way forward.

It may also be worth starting to explore possible “matched funds” that may be available to double the money, this would help support the application.

We want to hear from all groups and individuals about ideas for the village, if it isn’t eligible for funding under this scheme there is a possibility that funding could be available elsewhere.

The parish council are working together with the neighbourhood plan group to ensure we develop one long term vision for our village. We look forward to keeping you informed about grant applications and resident feedback and if you have any ideas or suggestions then please do get in touch. 17 BRAMHAM DRAMA GROUP NEWS What a show!! Many thanks to all the 800 plus people who came to watch Little Red Riding Hood. It was a pantomime written by local man Shane Huby, based significantly on the original story, augmented with traditional jokes from stage and screen. The junior chorus stole the show, and we hope that these juniors will be the future Drama Group; after all this was where Shane got his first taste of performing many years ago. Oh and thanks to all the cast and crew, without them there would not have been a show!!

Productions in 2014 Decisions have not yet been made about the productions in 2014. However, we are hoping to have another Murder Mystery Play in May, plus a celebration with a French theme for the Grand Depart (Tour de France) in June/July. There will be the annual pantomime in December, director, title etc will be decided after the AGM

Spending Plans for 2014 The Drama Group will be bidding for funds from the Community Fund and the parish council for items such as a new, permanent PA system. If anyone has other ideas of what Drama Group can bid for from parish council funds, please let us know by emailing bramhamdramagroup@gmail.com or by contacting a drama group member.

Drama Group AGM 2014 The AGM will be held in late January/early February – details will be on the parish web site: www.thisisbramham.co.uk

For more information about the Drama Group, please contact bramhamdramagroup@gmail.com or contact any Drama Group member.

BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND Thank you to those organisations which have made an application to the Community Fund for a grant from this year’s distribution from the Leeds Festival. Because the Parish Council’s distribution of funds and the need to avoid uncertainty about whether organisations should apply to both, it has been decided to defer the allocations from the Community Fund until after the Parish Council has announced its allocations. FOOTBALL CLUB The Saturday team is still maintaining its promotion push remaining unbeaten in the league so far this season and have also made it to the League Challenge Cup Quarter Final. The Sunday team after a shaky start is now starting to make progress and have hit a rich vein of form that has moved them out of the relegation zone. While playing away from Bramham, Saturday fixtures are at Boston Spa Comp, and Sundays are at Northway's Clifford. This has incurred a lot of expense, so if anyone would like to sponsor us in any way at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. Dave

MONDAY CLUB Monday Club members enjoyed a Christmas Party on the 10th December. Afternoon Tea was served by Mavis and her helpers Joan Reschen and Lynn Tritschler. The members enjoyed singing carols, which was followed by bingo and various games. Each member received a Christmas Gift. If you know anyone who you think would enjoy this social event every month, please let Mavis know. The next meeting is on Monday 4th February at the usual time of 1.30 pm.

If you would like a lift, please ring Mavis on 842321 TO MAKE YOU SMILE Aboard an airline flight from Europe to America, Grandma Bern was taking her very first flight. They had only been alo! a few minutes when the old lady complained to the stewardess that her ears were popping. The girl smiled and gave the older woman some chewing gum, assuring her that many people experienced the same discomfort. When they landed in New York, Grandma thanked the stewardess. "The chewing gum worked fine," she said. "Now that we've arrived, would you tell me, how do I get it out of my ears?"

9th January at 8.00pm at Linton Memorial Hall. Suzanne Dunne, a steward at Harewood House for the past ten years, traces the relationship between the family and the house over the 250 years since Edwin Lascelles first commissioned its building by Yorkshire architect John Carr. Annual membership of the Society is just £15.00 - contact Mrs Barbara Hepburn on 01937 582243 to join. Further details on www.lintonantiquesociety.org.uk

STEPPING STONES We started off Decembers Stepping Stones with a rehearsal for the nativity, in preparation for the crib service on Christmas Eve. After that, the children (who had all come dressed in their pjs) gathered around the Christmas tree to listen to Reverend Andy tell the story of A Christmas Carol and how Scrooge received a visit from 3 ghosts who made him think about how he lived his life. It was very magical, there was a background of Christmas music and what with the candle light, the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree & Reverend Andy's theatrical ability to tell a good story, everyone (adults included) was enchanted!

We then moved onto hot chocolate with marshmallows and cookies for the children and warm mulled wine and mince pies for the adults. The children also had a busy session making Christmas cards. It was lovely to see a few new faces and everyone had a smashing time! We return in the new year (10th January at 5.30pm) to learn about Baptism, as there will be a Baptism in the family service on the 12th January. We hope you had a lovely Christmas . For more information please contact Jennie Saynor on jen@saynor.me.uk

The January Smile A wise old gentleman retired and purchased a modest home in the summer near a junior high school. He spent the first few weeks of his retirement in peace and contentment. Then a new school year began. The very next afternoon three young boys full of youthful afterschool enthusiasm came down his street beating merrily on every trash can they encountered. The crashing percussion continued day after day, until finally the wise old man decided it was time to take some action. The next afternoon, he walked out to meet the young kids as they banged their way down the street. Stopping them, he said, "You kids are a lot of fun. I like to see you express your exuberance like that. I used to do the same thing when I was your age. Will you do me a favour? I'll give you each a dollar if you'll promise to come around every day and keep banging the trash cans”. The kids were elated and continued to do a bang-up job on the trash cans. A few days later, the wily retiree approached them again as they drummed their way down the street. "Look" he said, "I haven't received my pension cheque yet, so I'm not going to be able to give you more than 25 cents. Will that be okay?" "A lousy quarter?!" the drum leader exclaimed. "If you think we're going to waste our time beating these cans around for a quarter, you're nuts! No way, mister. We quit!" And the old man enjoyed peace and serenity for the rest of his days.
