3 Clergy Letter from Rev’d Stanley Menzies The onset of another year is often a time for reflection and resolution. It is the time when leaders of nations, governments and churches deliver messages of hope and intent to the people. It is the time when we extend the greeting to neighbour and stranger, a Good New Year to you. This greeting may be regarded as a prayer as it expresses the profound theological hope that it will be a good year for the children of the world and that they are worthy of a new year that restores their humanity and offers hope. But this greeting challenges those who make it to reflect on the reality of our time and to come to terms with what is there and what matters. Do we really mean what we say? We have to be alert to the character and quality of the lives of nations, of political parties, of the Church, financial institutions as well as that of ourselves.

brothers and sisters in the depth of wretchedness.

There is a theological and spiritual dimension to the longing for a Good New Year. What is there and what is happening in our world demands our urgent attention. But we also need the insight provided by Jesus to understand how to respond to the realities of today. The prophet Micah suggests the response; What does the Lord require of you but to do justly and to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God. The nations are under judgement as are the powers that govern them. Across our world there is no justice, peace, kindness or mercy. Families and children are being denied life by states, powers and organisations whose motivation is warped and alien to goodness. Relationship to God and neighbour is eliminated from human life. As our country holds the General Election this year may we and those who seek our support understand this imperative This New Year will put the character and to establish justice, to provide kindness and the quality to the test. Will we come to care and always strive to walk humbly in terms with what is there and what matters? the company of our fellow citizens. Amartya Sen, the Nobel Laureate As we journey into another year may we economist puts the issue clearly when he pursue truth wherever we find it even if it writes; takes outside our preconceived ideas or Human development is concerned with what comfort zone. Two thousand years ago I take to be the basic development idea: three wise men pursued truth and it led namely, advancing the richness of human them to a stable in Bethlehem and to the life, rather than the richness of the economy Christ Child. They had found the truth. But in which humans live, which is only part of they discovered something else that they it. had to go home by a different way. Perhaps He may not know it but he is affirming the there is a clue here for our time, we have to statement of Jesus, I have come that do things differently. May the nations, the people may have life and have it church and we, along with our companions, abundantly. pursue the truth revealed to us at Bethlehem This statement places the nations and and take a different way into the future to governing powers under judgement. 5 BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets at the Leeds Festival together with any other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £260,000. The last allocation of grants, based on the 2013 Festival took place in August 2014. It is planned that the allocations from the 2014 Festival will be considered in March and that this will become the normal month for allocations. The Fund is therefore now accepting applications. The closing date is 14 February To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, Bramham, LS23 6RS or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool

Thanks to Stockeld Park for the tree, thanks to Jamie Halliday for help with the wiring and a big thanks to Artie and Frank for getting the tree up with a little help from some friends and for putting the lights on. We hope if all goes well we should see some more Christmas lights in the village next year but watch this space for more news on this as we get nearer to next Christmas. 11 BRAMHAM DRAMA GROUP PANTOMIME REVIEW Dick Whittington (Written and Directed by John Nicholls) Along with trimming the tree, writing Christmas cards, singing carols and hectic Christmas shopping, going to the pantomime is very much part of this festive season. For many years now, Bramham Drama Group has put on a panto that is full of farce and fun. This year was no different, as John Nicholls and the group brought us ‘Dick Whittington’. In this year’s performance there were more juniors than ever taking part. With such amazing talent coming through the ranks, the group will go from strength to strength. Some of the juniors were very young and amazingly managed to learn the complicated dances so well. The scene where they sang and danced to ‘Let it go’ was magical and wowed the audiences. Matt Suddaby should be proud of what the juniors achieved. The adult chorus brought fun and colour to the performance this year. They looked amazing in their many costumes and they brought a real sense of occasion to the whole show. All of their routines were fabulous but the one that stuck out for me was when they were singing and dancing “One Way or Another” with Dame Wendy (played by Ian Gomerson) and the Sultan (played by Karon Haffenden). Dick Whittington (played by Caroline Stangroom) captured the audience’s sympathy and support as she battled against the injustices of King Rat (played by Shane Huby). This threw Dick into the arms of the beautiful and beguiling Alice (played by Suze Shelbrooke) and of course the rest is pantomime history. Dick’s cat, Ferdinand (played by new comer April Dickinson), practically stole the show. As always there are the characters that seem to be stupid beyond belief and this year there were many of them, but most notable were Idle Jack (played by Christine Suddaby) and Shipshape (played by Matthew Suddaby). I am assured that stupidity is not a family trait. There were so many good characters and I wish I had space to describe each and every one of them and talk about their particular strengths and what they contributed to the show. But everyone who saw the show knows that. The music was superb; clever sound effects and lighting brought the stage to life. Although the performance was longer than usual, it packed a lot into the two and three quarter hours!! And I didn’t notice anyone dozing off in the audience. Continued on page 15

December 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents: Update from December Meeting Pavilion: As we write this we just have minor snagging to complete and the flooring to be laid, both should be done by Christmas – come along and share in this excellent new facility. See separate article for information about upcoming events to celebrate the opening. New Playground: Work on the new playground (on the same site as the existing one) will start during the week commencing 12th January. The existing playground will therefore be closed on Sunday 11th January to enable work to commence. Our target is to have the new playground completed by the February half term. Speed signs by the school: Bramham Parish Council is contributing £1,200 to the provision of speed awareness signs by the school. The contribution is being matched by Clifford Parish Council. Leeds City Council is expected to fund the remaining £2,400. We will advise timescales as soon as they are confirmed. Village Sign: There were a few hiccups and it took longer than anticipated but our village sign is back and standing proud. Thank you to Mike Rhodes, Ian Kitchen and David Aarons for their help. Thank you to Parish Council Employees: Thank you firstly to our clerk, Marie. Marie as our clerk does a tremendous job on behalf of the Council. She manages all of our finances, which have been particularly complex in 2014, and is our ‘proper officer’, responsible for making sure that our decisions are legal, and advises us accordingly. Marie puts in countless hours, many unpaid, to ensure that we move Council business forward. This is very much appreciated by the whole Council. Frank Wood, Artie Ford and Mrs Blanchard are the team who work on the Senior Citizens Centre and garden. The centre is a lovely place for the senior citizens to meet during the day and new people would always be made welcome. We are sure you will all agree that the garden is a delight and will have admired the lovely Christmas tree and lights this year. The whole village benefits from the work that is done by our dedicated team of employees and we would like to extend a big thank you from the Parish Council on behalf of the village to all of them for their efforts and the positive difference they make to our village. CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT BRAMHAM PARK The 11th Drighlington Brass Band Concert was held at Bramham Park on 17th December, and once again our sincere thanks to Nick and Rachel Lane Fox for their warm welcome and generous hospitality. This was another great success, and the event is booked again for Wednesday 16th December 2015. The tickets are usually a sell out very quickly, so if you haven’t experienced this wonderful event, please put the date in your diary for next year. We would like to pay tribute to the Drighlington Brass Band, conducted by Jim Davies. It was great to see so many young talented musicians in their own right. Driglington was formed as a village youth band in 1976 by Ken & Wynn Crossland and the support of local parents, success and growth over the next twenty years saw the band reach the Championship section where they now compete against the likes of Black Dyke, Grimethorpe and Brighouse and Rastrick. The band has a reputation for excellent concerts and has been featured in two stage productions of "Brassed Off" and has even appeared on an episode of the TV soap Emmerdale on ITV. The superb Christmas Tree, the logged fire mulled wine and lovely nibbles created a true Christmas atmosphere and was a lovely start to Christmas. Thanks are also extended to Peggy Kitchen and Anne Palmer for organising the event and to Gill Young for printing the programmes and tickets, and to everyone who supported the occasion.

19 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Burns Night celebration on 24th January at the Village Hall Following the last two year’s highly enjoyable and successful Burns Night events, Fiddlers Wreck will be returning to the Village Hall to lead the entertainment. There will be a traditional supper, and toast to the haggis, plenty of dancing, and a licensed bar to provide well earned thirst quenching liquids. Tickets are £10 each and will be on sale in the Village shop during January, or available from a committee member or by emailing bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com A plea for the return of items “borrowed” from the hall. During the last year several items from the kitchen have disappeared from cupboards. These include large glass jugs, small cut glass jugs and sugar bowls, large serving plates, cake stands, vases. It is quite possible that these have been taken accidentally by caterers or people assisting with catering at events. However, their removal means that current users can’t enjoy the same facilities. If you held an event at the hall and you or your caterer accidentally took any items of crockery, cutlery, glassware etc, please can you return them? The hall is in use most evenings so if you prefer to return them anonymously you could leave them in the porch. Or you could phone a committee member who can collect them (three numbers below). Please remember that the assets of the hall are available for anyone to use at the hall, and should NOT be removed. They can be borrowed for private functions, by prior arrangement and for a small fee. 2015 events and bookings at the Hall We are already taking bookings for parties and events throughout 2015. If you know that you are likely to want to use the hall for your event, especially weekend children’s parties or evening events, please contact committee via the bookings email (bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com) or telephone number (07432 330972) where a committee member can assist in making the booking. If you haven’t been in the hall for years, we can arrange for you to visit the hall to consider the amenities it offers – including the fabulous toilets!!! Car Parking at the Village Hall More and more events are being held at the Village Hall, both regular weekly classes and occasional parties or events. However, the Committee has received complaints from users that they have been unable to park their cars on the car park as spaces have already been taken and cars have parked over two spaces. The Committee does not want to restrict the car park by means of gates and barriers. Please can residents, especially those close to the hall, respect that the car park is primarily for users of the hall. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. 35 STEPPING STONES Wow, what a fantastic final Stepping Stones in 2014! After the party with food and drink supplied by Stepping Stones parents, the children (who all came in the pyjamas and onesies) all sat next to the Church’s beautifully decorated Christmas tree and enjoyed the story Christmas Carol read by Reverend Andy. It was Reverend Andy’s last Stepping Stones with us, and he leaves Stepping Stones in great shape with more and more children joining us each month. Thank you Andy, we wish you and your family every happiness in your new post at St Cuthbert’s. The Childern of Stepping stones presented him with a hand made canvas of a cross which they had all helped to create. The Stepping Stones is open for child attend regardless of if they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 9th January at All Saints Church - 5.30pm – it will be a story about Baptism. The Family Service the following Sunday was Andy’s last service at All Saints, and included the Nativity which was a joint venture with St Peters at Walton, complete with real donkey! A big thank you to Doreen Lister and the children and Church wardens of St Peters for a fantastic service. Stepping Stones children practised their nativity for the All Saints Crib Service to be held on Christmas Eve, and we will be going over to St Peter’s for Christingle in the New Year. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday (11th January) at 10am. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. All Saints Church Bramham, serving Bramham’s Community for over 860 years.

36 THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION In November we held our pre-Christmas lunch at Dintingdales Restaurant at Scarthingwell, where we all enjoyed a lovely meal and each others company.. For the Tour de France our Branch contributed a number of little woolly jumpers to be used for bunting on display in Harrogate. We are pleased to learn these will now be made into blankets. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 21st January at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall when our speaker will be Mr Keith Barbour on Memories of 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s. All visitors most welcome. Jean Dale

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM We are delighted with the winter baskets on Front Street, and thank the residents who have financed these. It’s a shame the photograph shown below is not in colour, because they are looking super and colourful, bearing in mind that it is January. If any residents on Front Street would be interested in sponsoring a basket for Spring/ Summer 2015 they may contact Lynne Marshall 844767.

Thought for the month Lose one hour in the morning and you will spend all day looking for it

January Smile Bernard, who is noted for his gracious manner was awakened one morning at four am by his ringing telephone. “Your dog’s barking and its keeping me awake” said an angry voice. Bernard thanked the caller and politely asked his name and number before hanging up. The next morning at precisely four am Bernard called his neighbour back. “Good morning Mr Williams ” Just called to say that I don’t have a dog.”
