Clergy Letter from Revd Jane Brown There is something about seasons – seasons of the year and seasons of our life. They affect our mood, our way of seeing things and our priorities. As I write, Advent has just arrived and we are all busy preparing for Christmas with our own traditions, family and loved ones featuring large in our thoughts. By the time you read this letter, we will be surrounded by reviews of 2015 and plans, hopes and dreams for 2016. How the focus of nation changes. A well-known Bible passage from Ecclesiastes says ‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven’. It goes on to list many different opposing items, such as: a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; and a time for war, and a time for peace. They contain a certain realism about the human condition, but also reflect our capacity to choose how we respond to the challenges of life. The end of 2015 has been marred by suffering and violence across the globe. The spectre of violent acts targeted against innocent people has loomed large. Yet, we have also witnessed vast numbers of people looking to us, and other countries, to assist and welcome them. As we look ahead to 2016, the need for wisdom and discernment is evident. We need to find a

way to live purposefully and compassionately, without being consumed by fear and hatred. A plethora of complex factors affect our nation’s response to world events, like the refugee crisis or the threat of terror attacks. Whether we are policy-makers or not, we cannot abdicate our own responsibility for driving these responses. Each individual has choices to make. The question for us all is whether our actions will be driven by love or hatred, fear or compassion, a desire for revenge or peace. In Paris, we have seen many individuals take small steps to counteract the atmosphere of anger and hatred. I have been struck by the way in which people of all faiths, all ages, all backgrounds have spoken out in love and concern for others. Such individual actions aggregate and then influence wide society. We can only act at the level and in the context in which we find ourselves, but we should never underestimate the capacity for our individual actions to have a positive impact on a larger scale. Christianity is founded in the life and works of one man. In Jesus Christ, God chose to take on human form, both to redeem us and to show us how to live. In his example, we find a model for us all; a model which urges us to take our part in promoting responses to the threats we face that embody love, compassion, hospitality and acceptance. Let us not give in to fear, hatred and intolerance, both for our sake and the sake of others. Revd Jane Brown

Thank You to Lyn at the Village Shop As usual the shop has been very supportive to the Church by selling our Calendars and Christmas Cards. The Calendar venture is one our main money raising efforts. Making ends meet is always a struggle; the weekly expenditure is approx. £1000 and the income is now well short of this figure so we rely heavily on fund raising events such as this. So thank you very much to the Shop and to everyone who has bought a copy. There are still some more left if you haven’t already bought one!

STEPPING STONES We finished off the year of our Stepping Stones sessions with a really special evening. It started with the children colouring some nativity mobiles (while some of the parents dashed home to collect things they had forgotten!) and was followed with some Christmas bedtime stories read by Stephen Spencer under the Christmas tree…. it was all very calm and relaxing. The children then had hot chocolate with squirty cream and marsh mallows with some yummy buns kindly baked by Alyssa, and the adults enjoyed some (lukewarm!) mulled wine and delicious mince pies baked by Mrs Legault. All the children received a present as a thank you from the Stepping Stones team… its been really nice having everyone join us at Stepping Stones this year, and we really look forward to seeing you all next year. At the time of writing this, the children have only practiced their crib service nativity a couple of times but as always, its looking to be a lovely show. Stepping Stones is open for any child to attend regardless of if they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 8th January at All Saints Church - 5.30pm. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday (10th January) at 10am.

DECEMBER 2015 UPDATE ....communica ng with residents To All Bramham Residents: Update from the December meeting Senior Citizens’ Centre: We are continuing to investigate costs of installing a toilet at the Senior Citizens’ Centre, and other necessary improvements. We are also looking at the costs of replacing the building entirely. We will continue to consult with residents and welcome any views in the meantime. Dog Fouling: We now have an additional bin at the playing field. Please remember that incidents can be reported on 0113 2224406 or by using the Leeds City Council website. It is quicker to do this yourself rather than contact the Parish Council. As always, we recognize that most dog owners behave responsibly and that the problem is caused by the few who do not. Defibrillators: The 2 defibrillators purchased by the Parish Council are to be installed soon, one at the Village Hall, and one in the decommissioned phone box on Lyndon Avenue. Awareness sessions will be arranged. Next meeting:. Wednesday 6th January, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is a registered charity organisation funded by Leeds City Council Adult Social Care. Launched almost thirteen years ago, our aim has been consistent - to improve quality of life for local elderly people. Managed by a small team of staff and dedicated Trustees, we rely on the support of our very generous 130 volunteers aged between 17 and 80+ to be able to offer our many services. Would you like to join us as a WiSE volunteer? Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, use hidden talents and gain a real sense of community. If you have a couple of hours to spare each week or month you could help to make a real difference. Come along and meet us, make new friends, use your skills and gain new ones! We are currently looking for volunteers to help with our: • Dementia Cafes in Boston Spa, Wetherby and Collingham • Informal and fun singing group “The Boston Buskers” • New “Autumn Leaves” social group for the over 60’s in Wetherby - starting March 2016 • Singing group “The Howlers” for people living with dementia and their carers • Weekly mini meals on wheels type service “Soup and a Smile” • WiSE Owl Community Café in Boston Spa • Transport scheme – why not become a volunteer driver? BRAMHAM PRIMARY SCHOOL Happy new year everyone from all the children and staff at Bramham Primary School! What a wonderful first term we had in our happy school last year! Our little children in Reception have settled beautifully and have well and truly started on their educational journey; what a wonderful performance Key Stage One gave us with lots of singing and teary-eyed parents! We held three very successful Open Days for prospective families, who are looking forward in the hope that their children will join us this September for the Outstanding education and care we provide. Bramham Primary School also enjoyed taking part (and winning) the Christmas tree competition at All Saint’s church and what a fabulous job our choir did in singing for the Carol Concert there too! Some wonderful fixtures and matches played by our sporting teams left our children feeling energised and ready to take on new challenges in the new year. New Year is a time for reflection; a time for new beginnings. At Bramham Primary School we teach our children through our rich curriculum about being determined, being resilient and learning from our mistakes. We learn that one of the most important things in life is to care for others and to show this in as many ways as we can. We work towards being the very best versions of ourselves; our talented staff ensure all children achieve their potential. We hope that the care that we share for one another in Bramham Primary fills our village and we wish for you all a very happy and peaceful year in 2016. CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL This was the first time such a festival was held in Church and it proved to be an outstanding success, there was a steady stream of visitors over the two days and there was deserved praise for the Christmas trees on display. Much effort and no little imagination had gone into their creation. The beautifully decorated large Christmas tree gifted to the Church had worthy companions in the smaller trees. The stall-holders provided good fare and their contribution played a major part in this joyful event. Many people remarked on the breadth and originality of the stalls and found much to savour in their spending. But above all this was a splendid community occasion and a significant event for the Church. One lady asked “why can’t the church be like this more often?” Many conversations took place, some folk enjoyed sitting and taking in the atmosphere and beauty of the surroundings. Others found food for thought and time for reflection. One of the organisers said she had never had so many conversations in church and many were in no hurry to leave. Personally I found the whole occasion uplifting and challenging as to what the Church should be doing today. Its doors should be open, folk should feel free to enter and there should be opportunity to talk, listen, meet people and have the time to sit and unwind. We should certainly do this more often and your ideas are most welcome. The event raised over £1200 pounds for church funds and thanks are due to all the stallholders, to the tree designers, to the tea and coffee makers and to all who helped set up and remove the chairs and furniture. Above all, special thanks are due to the prime movers and organisers of the whole weekend, Mavis Wilson and Jillian Lawson. Stanley

THANK YOU! A really big “thank you” to all those people who gave so generously of their time, talents and money, and made the Christmas Tree Festival at All Saints’ Church such an enjoyable and successful event. Thank you especially to the groups and individuals who entered the Christmas tree competition and filled the church with an amazing array of beautiful and ingenious creations. They all looked wonderful! 25 trees were entered into the competition. Thank you to Mrs Wendy Dawson for judging the trees - not an easy job! The winner of the Adult Section was - The Fitness League. Winner of the Junior Section - Bramham Primary School. Highly Commended - Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association. - The Monday Club. - Folly Allotment. Continued on page 21

YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION In November we held our pre-Christmas Lunch with a return visit to Dintingdale’s Restaurant at Scarthingwell. We enjoyed an excellent meal, even more so with pretty favours given to every member by Mrs G Young, and the great organisation of our chairman Mrs Topping. Many thanks to both. At the switching on of the lights ceremony on 4th December our Branch provided Hot Chocolate with marshmallows, served in the Senior Citizens Shelter, which were most enjoyed by the younger generation, as seen in the attached photograph The YCA Christmas Tree decorated by Mrs Lillian Barton for the Church Christmas Tree Festival gained a Highly Commended. Thank you Lillian for representing us. It gained a lot of favourable comments from the Judge and the public. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 20th January at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall, when the speaker will be Mr Eric Scaife on “Yorkshire Dialect” As always, visitors are most welcome to join us Jean Dale.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON IN THE VILLAGE On Friday December 4th the village turned out for the inaugural switching on of the Christmas lights. We were lucky enough to secure grants to get the new street light decorations so we decided to make a special evening of it. We invited other village groups to take part and we were lucky enough to have the NSPCC join us with mince pies, Bramham in Bloom had a stall selling plants and pots of bulbs for those extra Christmas presents, the Church brought along the new 2016 calendars to sell, the Yorkshire Countrywomans Association did hot chocolate in the Senior Citizens Shelter and the PTA at Bramham Primary School sold hand made gifts, cakes and soft drinks. The Community Action Group laid on mulled wine and hot dogs which were generously donated by Sainsburys in Wetherby. Music was provided by the choir from Bramham Primary School who sang a range of carols and Christmas songs. We planned to switch on the lights at 7pm and we were worried that as each street light motif was set on a timer to come on at that time we weren’t sure how close together they would come on. However at 7pm the street light motifs came on over a period of two minutes, each one accompanied by an appreciative gasp from the crowd. Fiona Henderson in her capacity as Vice Chair of Bramham Parish Council formally switched on the Christmas tree lights. Where did it all come from? The “one off” costs of installing the electrics was £550 per light (totalling £3300) and we raised the money by way of a grant from Bramham Parish Council. We decided to hire the individual motifs from Leeds City Council and these cost £195 plus vat each year to hire. Money for this years hire has come from a grant we received from the Community Fund. So we thank both the Parish Council and the Community Fund for their help in this. Can you help? Next year we hope to hire the motifs again and need companies or individuals to sponsor each motif. If you are willing to sponsor a motif next year please let me know. We are also looking at having motifs on the two streetlights in The Square but we will keep you up to date on this. BROADBAND IN BRAMHAM VILLAGE Firstly a big thank you to all the residents of Bramham who responded to my call and submitted their postcode and BT cabinet data. I have responded to everyone individually but would like to thank all those involved publicly and put it into the public domain that those connected to cabinet (DP) 15 are at present unable to access the faster speeds that fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) can offer; included are the cluster of houses in and surrounding Bramham Lodge, those at Bowcliffe Corner, those in and around Bowcliffe Hall and Paradise Farm along Paradise Way, totalling 54 properties (according to Superfast West Yorkshire). There are also a small number of properties which, probably because of their distance from cabinets 4 & 18 and/or the quality of their copper lines to their properties, also seem not able to access the technology, though they are indeed connected to the appropriate roadside cabinets (4 & 18). I shall be using the data gained by your help to try to persuade Superfast West Yorkshire/BT to complete the upgrade to the village. Secondly it became apparent during the exercise that there are a number of villagers who believed that the faster speeds associated with fibre would appear automatically. I do not wish to appear to be teaching “grandmothers to suck eggs” but the faster speeds can only be obtained by contacting your provider (BT, Sky, TalkTalk etc) and asking to be switched over to the fibre technology, which of course will inevitably cost more, the amount depending on your provider. Thank you again and wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy Christmas and New Year. Mike Corrigan, Bramham resident.

Thought for the month Do not forget small kindnesses, And do not remember small faults

Chinese Proverb

Psychiatrist vs. Bartender Ever since Bob was a child, he always had a fear of someone under his bed at night. So he went to a Psychiatrist and told him: “I've got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there's somebody under it. I'm scared. I think I'm going crazy and I am frightened at going to bed ” “Just put yourself in my hands for one year”, said the Psychiatrist. “Come talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears.” “How much do you charge?” “£50 per visit,” replied the shrink. “I'll sleep on it,” Bob said. Six months later the doctor met Bob on the street. “Why didn't you come back to see me about those fears you were having?” he asked. “Well, £50 a visit, three times a week for a year, is £7,800. A bartender cured me for £10. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought a new pickup truck.” “Is that so?” With a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed. There ain't nobody under there now.!” It's always better to get a second opinion.
