Clergy Letter from Rev’d Tricia Anslow GRACE IS GOD’S BEST GIFT! As I write this I am also organising my day so that I remember to send a birthday card and present to a dear friend. She, and her family, is one of my closest friends. I try hard not to forget in the days before her birthday to send the things so they arrive in time for her special day. Although she deserves a gift and card there is some sort of self-imposed obligation in me to send them. My friend, in her turn will have an inbuilt need, because she has been brought up well, to thank me, in person or on the phone. We know that God has gifts for us, not birthdays or anniversaries, but all the time and there is one that is his best gift of all – GRACE. This is the greatest gift to us because we don’t deserve it, we can ignore it, we can forget to say thank you and yet God will still send it to us. I have been reading a book recently called ‘What’s so Amazing about Grace?’ by Philip Yancey. I admit to being fatigued with ‘good reading’. All the books we had to read to research for understanding and quotes for essays during training gave me a jaded view of non-fiction reading. This book has re-vitalised me! Philip Yancey comes from a very different perspective on life than I do but his words on God’s grace taught me a lot. For instance; I now have ideas about what God’s grace can do for us.

i. It can melt ‘un-grace’ ii. It can give us the ability to forgive, with meaning. iii. It can teach us we are loved by God for no other reason than we are His. iv. It can give us the power to receive and then give love. v. It can give us the ability to say sorry first. This list sounds like something beyond belief, almost something for nothing, but this is the beauty of God’s grace; he gives no demand of reciprocity, but as soon as you are aware you are in receipt of this grace you will wish to thank him, to keep within his bounds and run your day his way. To define grace is hard; there is abstractness about it, a difficulty in grasping its form. It is much easier to give examples or absences of grace. We see it in action in those around us and we are sure we must be able to ‘do’ grace. Think back; have you been gracious this week – without point scoring? Have you given in gracefully in an argument? Have you looked for the ‘saving grace’ in someone you are inclined to dislike? Well, you have seen, heard or felt God’s grace in action. Philip Yancey attempts to give us a definition of grace, ‘Grace means there is nothing we can do to make God love us more…………… And grace means there is nothing we can do to make God love us less.’ We are in receipt of the best of God’s gifts.

5 OPEN GARDENS AND PLANT SALE A GREAT SUCCESS Bramham Community Action Group held a very successful open garden and plant sale event on Bank Holiday Monday which raised over ÂŁ500 towards the Gala. The plant sale was extremely popular and people were buying plants well before the official opening and by about 3pm nearly everything was sold. A big thanks to the Leeds City Council Gardens centre at Red Hall for providing such good quality plants at a very reasonable price. We are sure that everyone who bought plants were impressed. Many thanks also to the residents who donated a range of plants from hostas to tomatoes to courgettes. The open garden trail took people on a route through the village and many thanks to the garden owners, Mr & Mrs Gibson (teas & cakes), Mr & Mrs Mackie (Pimms), Mr & Mrs Hewitt (Alpine plants), Mr & Mrs Ferres (straw house) and Mr & Mrs Barton who also showed their incredible model village. Many thanks to the owners who donated all the money they took during the day to the Gala fund. Also thanks to Bramham Church for opening the doors and letting people look around the churchyard and to the Allotments on Aberford Road for letting people look around. The treasure trail also proved popular although difficult. The prize was won by the Burdall family who scored a maximum 100%!!! On a personal note many thanks to the Community Action committee and helpers who made this a success by helping setting it all up or serving at the plant sale or providing teas/ coffees and bacon butties. Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk

June 2013 Update ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents Here is the update from our June Parish Council meeting: Thank you to Frank Wood and Artie Ford! Frank and Artie, as well as keeping the Senior Citizens’ Centre looking lovely, recently cleared a large pile of foliage left on the playing field. We’re very lucky to have them both! Playground: The Parish Council, with advice from Leeds City Council, unfortunately had to temporarily close the playground due to damage caused by wear and tear and vandalism. The damage caused safety issues which would, apart from being a danger, have affected our insurance. Hopefully repairs will be complete and the playground reopened by the time this magazine is published. Leeds Festival: Through the efforts of Cllr Fiona Henderson we obtained more tickets from Festival Republic than in previous years. However, applications for tickets have been higher than ever, and we had only a limited number of “nominated” tickets, so unfortunately we couldn’t fulfil all of the requests. There is a waiting list and any residents who are not going to be using their tickets are asked to email Cllr Henderson fhendersonbpc@gmail.com so that they can be allocated to someone else. The Council would like to thank Fiona for the many hours of hard work processing the applications. Church Services: Reverend Stanley Menzies has let us know about the new services to be held, in a style different from the traditional services, intended to appeal to those who are not regular church goers. The Parish Council would like to offer Stanley its support and hopes that residents will become involved. The first “alternative” service is on the 23rd June, 10.00, and monthly thereafter. Open Gardens: Many residents thoroughly enjoyed the Open Gardens day, it was fun and interesting to see such a varied selection in different parts of the village. Thank you to Cllr Keith Innocent and the Community Action Group for organising the day, and also of course to the residents who opened up their gardens, even providing refreshments from tea and cake to Pimms! 15 Council News continued from page 13

The Village Shop: We have all now said our farewells to Joanne and Andrea. We’ll certainly miss them, but also very much welcome the new owner Lynne Williams, and wish her lots of luck in continuing with Bramham’s best loved asset! Pavement Parking: The Parish Council continues to report problems with pavements and roads to Leeds City Council, but please do help by not parking on pavements. As well as causing damage it can be obstruction, especially for those in wheelchairs, on mobility scooters, and with pushchairs. Path in Bramham Park: Cllr Martin Batt has continued to work with Nick Lane Fox on the opening of a circular route through Bramham Park, and we expect it to be open early July. Thank you to Cllr Batt, and of course to Nick Lane Fox, for helping to provide this welcome new facility. Check the Parish Council website for details. Option Agreement: We still have had no further information from Leeds City Council regarding exercising the option agreement to buy the strip of land along the playing field. The matter remains in the hands of our solicitor. The Council has met informally with Cllr Alan Lamb who is hoping to be able to help to move things forward. Bramham Sports and Leisure Association / Pavilion: The Parish Council has still had no response to the draft lease offered to the BSLA. Again, Cllr Alan Lamb is making efforts to move things forward, through liaison with Cllr John Proctor, one of the BSLA Directors. We do recognise, and share, residents’ frustration with the pavilion remaining un-open. Website: Remember the Parish Council website is updated frequently with new information. The address is below – do visit the website for latest news on both Parish Council business and village events. Next Meeting: The next Council meeting will be held on Wednesday 3 July, 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. Residents are welcome to join us. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on our website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. Contact:

Discoverers @ Bramham July’s Discoverers will be on the 14th July and we are hoping to have a picnic, so please help us to hope and pray for nice weather! The picnic will start at 4pm and will be a case of bringing your own picnic, a blanket and we will have some outdoor games and fun (indoor if it rains!). It will be our last Discoverers before the summer holidays and it would be lovely to see as many of you as we can. Please contact Lisa Revolta - lisa@lisarevolta.com Emma Hunter – emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com or Jennie Saynor – Jen@saynor.me.uk if you would like more details about Discoverers. 31 NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH After many years service PC David Muscroft retired from West Yorkshire Police force at the end of December 2012. Since then residents will not have received the regular usual weekly NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH message. Due to the re-organisation within West Yorkshire Police this post will not be refilled. West Yorkshire Police, North East Division are now taking the opportunity to revamp the old system and to bring it into line with the much changed NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ORGANISATION. Unfortunately this is taking a lot longer than anticipated. We hope to have a new system in place within a few months. Part of the updating entails extra work for our already very busy PC’s and PCSO’s as they are finding time to contact everyone on the lists to ensure that our records are correct. Many residents have moved and often the new occupiers do not wish to be involved. Some now have new telephone numbers and some are requesting messages to be sent via email. All these changes do take up a lot of time. Should you require up to date crime information, the West Yorkshire Police Web Page is always available www.westyorkshirepolice.uk. Click on ‘My Area’ and then type in a local Post Code for the up to date information or alternatively you may sign on to www.ourwatch.org.uk and again type in your local Post Code for local information. Should any residents, groups or Parish /Town Councils wish me to give a talk about the changes within NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH please contact me on the details below. Maureen Brewer Chair, Wetherby & District Crime Prevention Panel West Yorkshire Police Representative to National Neighbourhood Watch Deputy to Yorkshire & Humberside Regional Representative to National NHW Telephone 01937 582 441 Mobile 07711 150 438 Email: ifo@kalsom.co.uk `

YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMENS ASSOCIATION Our Speaker and Demonstrator and Instructress at our May Meeting was Mrs Alison Braine who first showed us how to make a very pretty star-shaped Christmas Decoration and then, with the help of a friend, made sure we all made our own perfect copy, sending us home very pleased with ourselves. In July, we shall have our Summer Lunch. This year at Dintingdale’s Restaurant at Scarthingwell. 12.30 pm for 1.00 pm, on Wednesday 17th July. Jean Dale

33 SECOND HAND BOOKS For ARTHRITIC RESEARCH Do you have any good quality second hand books you could donate to raise funds for Arthritis Research? The local branch of Arthritis Research UK are holding a Book Stall in the Horsefair Centre, Wetherby on Saturday, 27th July 2013 from 9.00 to 4.00 pm Please contact the Secretary, Sheila Clayton on 01937 842954 to arrange collection or alternatively drop them off at the stall on the day.

JUDGING DAY is on Monday 8th July 10.45 in the Square As explained last month, the judging route will be as before, so now is the time for everyone, especially those on the route, to start planting tubs and baskets with summer bedding plants so that they will be at their best for the judging day. New plants have been planted and we just need some sunshine and soft showers, so that they will be at their best by Judging Day. As usual the Judges will stop in the square/garage area for some time around 10.45am to meet gardeners and residents, so if you can spare a few minutes please come along and talk to them. We are awarded more points if they see we have the support and interest of villagers. The Judges also take into consideration the tidiness of the village, so if you see any litter (i.e. bottles, crisp packets, plastic bags etc) please help to tidy up by disposing of them in a litter bin. Please don’t leave it to the Committee! It goes without saying that just taking part in the scheme enhances the status of the Village because not only do the Judges look at our floral displays but also the Village as a whole, particularly on the route that they will take through the Village. Marks are awarded for cleanliness and tidiness of communal areas, general tidiness of gardens on the judging route, any personal floral displays in support of improving the environment, ie hanging baskets, hay racks, specific garden displays. It is very important that the posters are displayed as it gives the Judges a good indication of the support in the Village for the Yorkshire in Bloom entry. Once the judging is over, the posters can be taken down in preparation for 2014!!

37 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL Bramham Beer Festival - Saturday 26th October 2013 We have changed the date of this years’ Beer Festival to avoid clashing with other local events in nearby villages. This year we are spreading our ales further, beyond Yorkshire, so we will have a theme of Beers of the World. As in previous years we will also have cider, lager, wines and soft drinks. We will be looking for local businesses or individuals to sponsor different elements of the festival, with the level of sponsorship attracting different benefits. We are looking for sponsors of the following:• The whole event !! • Festival glasses • Barrels of beer (20+ so lots of sponsors needed) • Potentially a new beer specially brewed for the event • Food • Entertainment • Printing • T-shirts/aprons etc • Anything else anyone might wish to sponsor!! Please contact Becky Zimmerman for further information on 07932 957806 Assistant Cleaner required Due to the hall being used so frequently for classes and meetings during the week, the regular cleaner does not always have time to fully complete all the weekly cleaning tasks. The committee has decided to explore the possibility of engaging an assistant cleaner to undertake the cleaning of the kitchen and toilets, whilst the existing cleaner concentrates on the floors and other tasks. Anyone interested should phone the Village Hall on 07432 330972, and leave your details if the phone is not answered. Unsociable and unacceptable behaviour in the Village Hall At a recent private party there were reports of unsociable behaviour by certain individuals from within and outside the village. This not only spoiled what had been an enjoyable evening for family and friends of the host, but also put at risk the licence of the Village hall and the ability to hold similar events in future. The committee has been advised to apply strict conditions to, and possibly exclude, those involved in the unsociable behaviour should they try to gain access to future events. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. Bramham Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee

YOUR CHANCE TO HELP INFLUENCE THE FUTURE OF BRAMHAM Leeds City Council (LCC) has published a consultation paper on proposed development sites for housing development, retail, employment and green space throughout the City. Amongst the paper there is a section on housing proposals in our area and this includes a potential site of 3,000 houses at Spen Common Lane which would create a significant new settlement within the Green Belt. You are invited to comment on this and other sites and put forward your views. The consultation process informs LCC on the views of residents so it is very important to take part in this. The Bramham Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee is encouraging residents to give their views on this and other proposals to LCC and to us. LCC consultation closes 29th July. We will be issuing more detailed information in a door drop, with a response form for your views, and you can also call in at various venues around the City to find out more. These venues are listed on the Leeds City Council website. We are also holding Drop in sessions for residents on Friday July 5th from 4pm to 8pm and Saturday July 13th from 2.30pm to 4pm in the Village Hall Supper Room, where you can find out more about the proposals and the consultation process. More information is available on the Parish Council website (www.thisisbramham.co.uk), under news items and the link to the Neighbourhood plan website You can access the LCC consultation paper on www.leeds.gov.uk/siteallocations Keith Innocent Chairman Neighbourhood Plan Committee keith@thomlinsons.co.uk

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Catherine Jones unfortunately has had to give up her role as a gardener. Catherine has been with us since the outset in 2005 so many thanks for all the hard work. Fortunately a new resident in the village Helena Buck has offered to take over from Catherine. Thank you Helena it is much appreciated. We urgently need some more volunteers so please give me a ring on 841195 to discuss how much or how little you could do.

Many thanks to Iris Smith for helping with the sorting .

This is what 3000 plants looked like in Gill’s garden for our Summer Planting!! Ernest Nichols

Thought for the Month

A Smile for July A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a checkup, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember . Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks. 'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?' 'Sure.' he said. 'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks. 'No, I can remember it.' 'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?' He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.' 'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down like the Doctor recommended?' she said. Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!' Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment. 'Where's my toast?' she asks.
