Clergy Letter from Rev’d Trish Anslow LE GRAND DÉPART I drove over to Lancashire last week and went via Otley and Ilkley. My route was dotted with yellow bicycles. They were found in gardens, on walls, fastened to fences, in shop windows; anywhere and everywhere. There seems to be great excitement taking over Yorkshire as our county prepares for ‘Le Grand Départ’. It is strange to me that the Tour de France would start near here. A bike ride set to test the stamina of the best cyclists in the world in some of the most trying terrains in Europe starts in Leeds! Are we being included as the nursery slopes of the Alps/ Are we part of France now; have the borders finally been demolished? Think of those cyclists setting out- trained, at the height of fitness, prepared- team backup with spares and satnavs –dedicated, with the goal of winning the race. They are setting off, here in our back garden, in Leeds, to ride to France! St. Paul and his fellow travellers set off on their travels in a very different manner. They will have walked, talked and preached their way from one town or city to another. Like the cycle race, the borders of the countries were not important –the cause was! Telling the Gospel to those who didn’t know was even more important than flying the flags and cheering on in French. Were they trained? Oh yes; they had trades to fall back on to pay their way, they had spent months/ years walking the Way and would have been in full fitness. Were they prepared? You bet! They had the stories and testimonies to answer every

question put to them; they had their back up team working the crowds to be sure everyone understood the Good News. They had others avidly reading the letters that came back from the travellers and spreading the word. Were they dedicated? Of course! They would talk, enthuse, and persuade any and every one, Jew and Gentile, to listen to the message from Jesus Christ. Our lives have to have some element of the passion of the contestants and St. Paul to stir us up in our Christian journey. Are we trained? Do we practise our faith in prayer and praise regularly, honed to a level of spiritual fitness? Are we prepared? Do we work with others to support and encourage those on our journey? Are we dedicated? Are we so keen to tell others about our endeavours that they will listen, be excited and want to find out more? We can watch the cyclists, wave our flags, be inspired and be stirred to try cycling for ourselves. We can read of St. Paul’s travels, picture ourselves in the crowds, read his words of encouragement and admonishment, and set out to read more about this man Jesus that he talks of. Lastly, we can be so moved that we are able to tell others of our faith; just the odd word here and there with neighbours, friends and strangers. Inspire them to take up the challenge, support them when they do and dedicate yourselves to doing it all over again! Bon chance!

Revd Trish

Stepping Stones June’s Stepping Stones was a partly about Pentecost and partly about completing the Stepping Stones and All Saints Church entry into the Bramham Scarecrow Trail. As you can see our scarecrow is a very handsome chap. His bike arrived the following week, and was entitled ‘High Revving Rev’. Reverend Andy introduced the scarecrow at Sunday’s Family Service (held 2nd Sunday every month) The children enjoyed juice and jaffa cakes (also popular with Mums and Dads) , whilst Reverend Andy read the story about Pentecost; the coming of the holy spirit that gave the disciples power to proclaim the gospel in ways that those listening could understand. Reverend Andy gave the example of our scarecrow who has no breath in him, but God breathes his Holy Spirit into us! The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. The theme for Stepping Stones is always linked to the Family Service the following Sunday – these services are very relaxed and child friendly. Any child is welcome to attend regardless whether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 11th July at All Saints Church - 5.30pm. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday (13th July) at 10am. For more information please contact Jen Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. All Saints Church Bramham, serving Bramham’s Community for over 860 years.

9 BRAMHAM DRAMA GROUP NEWS As a result of the generous amount raised by audiences for Lymphoma and Leukaemia Research at our production of Calendar Girls last July, we were invited to put forward a nomination for Best Amateur Production at the recent ‘Afternoon Tea with The Calendar Girls’ charity event held at the Pavilions in Harrogate. Before the awards presentation, we were treated to fascinating ‘behind the scenes’ stories from each of the five original Calendar Girls present. The original photographer, Terry Logan, also gave us a very amusing account of his personal memories of the famous photo -shoot session. The tea party was a celebration of all the UK amateur productions – over 600, we were told – and the Harrogate event was just a small representation of the total number. There were also awards for individual cast members who demonstrated courage and determination through health issues and other difficulties. We heard some amazing stories from women nominated in these categories. The John Baker Award was made to a young girl who had battled through three episodes of leukaemia, which she bravely recounted in her own words. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room by the time she had finished. Alison Mackie (Director) Suzan Shelbrooke Tim Firth (Playright) Caroline Stangroom Becky Zimmerman

Sadly, we didn’t win the Best Amateur Production category, but we did make it to the final three! Tim Firth, who wrote the original screenplay and script for the amateur production, praised us for the way in which we used photos of local scenes on the large back screen. This was just one aspect of a very professional production. Well done to everyone associated with Calendar Girls! Gerry Taylor

11 KEEPING BRAMHAM CHURCH OPEN ON WEEK DAYS From the 1st July the Church in Bramham will be open during the week and you are invited to visit All Saints to look round, to sit and reflect and to enjoy the beauty and peace .The Church and its Saxon churchyard are at the heart of our community and they give us a sense of place which provide us with a resource of calm, contemplation and refreshment in our busy lives. In the words of the Celtic poem “the love of God comes close where stands an open door.” It is your Church and you are most welcome to share its peace and its grace. In the Spring I invited you to a conversation as I suggested that increasing numbers of people are searching for spiritual integrity and truth. They are asking questions rather than providing answers and this is the nature of the conversation that you are invited to take part in. Since then I have enjoyed several conversations and hope for more as the door opens in July. Stanley Menzies

A NEW LISTENING SERVICE ON THE FIRST MONDAY OF THE MONTH On the first Monday of each month there will be someone with many years experience of helping the bereaved and other issues, available to listen to you. This is not Counselling, simply an understanding and confidential listener. Please feel free to drop in to Bramham Church between 10.00 and 12 noon Molly Browning

June 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents To all Bramham residents: Here is the update from our June Parish Council meeting, and latest developments:

PLAYING FIELD & PAVILION: The Parish Council has now taken over the pavilion and the playing field. Completion of outstanding works on the pavilion, and opening it for use, is our main priority. It will be open for viewing at the gala on Saturday the 28 June and council representatives will be available to share with you the latest information with regards to the completion and plans for opening and also to discuss how residents can help to ensure the pavilion is an ongoing success.

Photographs taken by Katie Kitchen

We are very conscious that the matter of the pavilion has been going on for a long time and that the issues involved became complex. We assure you that the council has followed the correct, if lengthy, procedure, to ensure that the field and pavilion remain protected as a village facility. (Full details were given in the APM report, which is on the website and available from the clerk.) Last month we advised that the Parish Council was in discussion with the BSLA with regards to the handover of the pavilion and field. The BSLA had indicated that the keys would be handed over but sadly, despite reminders, they did not do so. As a result we had to use a bailiff to gain entry at a significant cost. It is regrettable that the BSLA were not prepared to hand over the keys and save the village the expenditure but we now wish to look forward to the future and put this unpleasant situation behind us. To ensure that the village can afford to maintain the pavilion long term we will need much support from the community to maintain the building and to develop it as a facility that is enjoyed and used by a number of groups in the village. We want to bring together a team of people who will help with the running, maintenance and fund raising for this village facility so if you are willing to give a small amount of your time and you want to see this pavilion succeed please do get in touch. We are pleased that Bramham Football Club is keen to come back to play in Bramham and is prepared to fund raise and help to look after the pavilion. Frank and Artie (two Bramham residents who kindly look after the senior citizen centre garden) have already done a fantastic job removing all the weeds from outside the pavilion, so a huge thank you to them for the hard work, it has made such a difference.

The Meeting Room

A Shower Room

Councillors have now had a chance to look around the pavilion and the building is very impressive. We would like to give credit to the BSLA build committee for its construction. The pavilion is fitted with showers, toilets, a kitchen, meeting room, heating, alarm and changing rooms. The building appears to be in a very good state of repair and the amount of work to do to complete the facility is significantly less than we feared. So hopefully it will be up and running very soon. We will be keeping you updated on progress in this magazine and on our website.

Option monies grants: Yorkshire Local Councils Association confirmed that grants provisionally awarded for the Village Hall, the cottage, a drama group PA loop, and Bramham in Bloom are eligible. They advised that some other applications do not meet the criteria. The council are querying this and are still considering options for other applications. Full details of the grants, including the amounts, will be published after final confirmation.

National Grid works on Headley Lane: National Grid gave a presentation and responded to residents’ questions. It was confirmed that new towers will be no taller and no closer to the village than existing ones. They agreed to consider clearer signage regarding when the lane is open, and to provide regular updates. Continued on page 17

Bowcliffe Road resurfacing: We are pleased to report at last that Bowcliffe Road is scheduled to be resurfaced early July. Works are expected to take around 2 weeks.

Open Gardens: Thank you to Cllr Keith Innocent and Vicki Innocent for an excellent open gardens day.

Playground: We are disappointed to report that our application for a grant from Grantscape towards refurbishment of the playground was unsuccessful. We are now considering other options that may be a reduced cost alternative or using more of the option monies, or possibly the Woodyard site Section 106 monies (this is monies paid by developers when they build a new development of houses in Bramham).

Leeds Festival: All residents who applied on time and were eligible have been allocated a ticket. A number of applications arrived after the closing date and we have included them on a waiting list. Full price tickets (that include access to the guest areas) are still available. We have continued to make enhancements to the festival application procedure, including the nominated tickets facility and securing additional tickets from Festival Republic. Councillor Fiona Henderson has taken on the role of leading on this project for the 3rd year. Thank you to Fiona for going that extra mile to assist residents who have made mistakes on applications as this causes a significant amount of additional work but we don’t want anyone to be disappointed. We know that all residents who attend the festival appreciate attending the festival as a guest at a fraction of the normal price and we would like to thank Melvin Benn from festival Republic for providing the tickets.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 2nd July, 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. We hope you find this update useful. 19 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM SPRING JUDGING COMMENTS Introduction Daffodils everywhere, as were the children’s Y in B posters. A warm welcome from the small committee and their supportive helpers. A good informative brochure was sent to the judges beforehand. The village approach signs were excellent. Firbeck Road front gardens were almost without exception, colourful, very well tended and a credit to all involved. All Saints Church’s Anglo Saxon Churchyard and Lych-Gate are the jewel in Bramham’s crown, with the judges enjoying a short guided walk through the churchyard and then into the church. The Jubilee Garden is now well established, and among the sustainable shrubs, rosemary is very evident. The many flower beds in strategic locations are eyecatching. Several older villagers at the OAP Shelter, now renamed the Senior Citizens Centre, were enjoying the warm sunshine, and their most attractive environment. The borders at the Clifford Road bungalow and the Medical Centre were a blaze of colour, and congratulations are due to those who maintain them, as are the many floral frontages on Clifford Road. This is a well thought out and prepared entry, with an air of cleanliness and caring throughout. Comments. The Wildlife Preservation Area has been much extended and further opened up. Well done. Litter and dog- fouling were not evident, thanks to the endeavours of the regular litter pickers. The judges were able to meet the gardeners and volunteers who play an important role in Bramham in Bloom’ success. Pride is most visible, and is the common attribute they all show. There were few houses or premises that lacked a children’s YIB poster. Local businesses help with sponsorship along with support within Bramham. Michael and LovaineIrving Yorkshire in Bloom Judges

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM COMMENTS This was a very pleasing report and hopefully we can build on this in the summer. The Summer judging is on the 11th July so its not too early to start preparing your gardens. Bramham in Bloom Committee

ALL SAINTS CHURCH BRAMHAM TOWER IN NEED OF URGENT REPAIR! The beautiful 11th century grade II listed building in the middle of the village is in vital need of repairs and restoration to the church tower. People living in the village will have noted that in stark contrast to the churches in the surrounding villages flags have not flown over the church for many years to mark special occasions in the calendar. This is because access to the roof and flag pole is dangerous and has been forbidden by the insurers who refuse to cover anybody who would dare risk life and limb to help celebrate events in Bramham. In addition over the years weather has leaked into the tower and this has caused extensive damage to the fabric and the wooden beams as well as structures supporting the bells. A recent survey by the church authorities has said that work must be carried out to make the area strong and safe for the coming centuries and of course it goes without saying that the structure must be made weather proof as well. Whilst all this work is being carried out it would be sensible to re-design the access to the roof to make it safe and it would be a fitting climax to the restoration work to see the flag proudly flying over the village. The alternative scenario of the church without its tower is too bleak a picture to contemplate let alone happen! Unfortunately, such work will require raising about ÂŁ60,000. Whilst some funding may be found from English Heritage and other such bodies, the vast majority will have to be found from local residents and businesses in Bramham. To continue the ball rolling, a second event will be held in Bramham Park on

SATURDAY 19th JULY 2014

HOG ROAST HOG ROAST HOG ROAST HOG ROAST HOG ROAST By kind permission of Mr. Nicholas and the Hon. Rachel Lane Fox the grounds and private gardens will be open from 3pm. People will be able to walk throughout the park and visit areas which are otherwise closed. Please feel free to bring family and friends and your dogs, although the latter must be kept on leads at all times. To encourage you to see as much of the gardens a treasure hunt will be organized. At 4.30pm the HOG ROAST will be available and there will be a bar with local beer and foreign wines on sale. For those who would prefer tea and coffee this will also be available; for children under 6 years free squash will be provided. There will be face painting to add colour to the day. We hope that you will come and support this special event to keep the character of the village as it should be and take advantage of this rare opportunity to visit the whole of Bramham Park. Entry will be via the Terry Lug Farm at the blue gate on the Bramham/Thorner Road. Entry price is £10 per adult or £35 for a family ticket if booked in advance family ticket discounted to £30.

All proceeds will go to All Saints Church Bramham Tower Restoration Fund. Further details contact: lisa@lisarevolta.com or chipmol@btinternet.com

23 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The AGM of the Village Hall Management Committee will be held on

Monday 7th July at 8pm in the supper room. The agenda will include: Chairman’s report Treasurer’s report Presentation & Acceptance of 2013 accounts Election of officers Any other business All regular users and residents are welcome to attend.

FUND RAISING AND RUNNING COSTS The general running costs of the hall include services such as gas, electric, water, rates, and insurance plus cleaning, minor repairs and maintenance. Most of these costs are met from the income generated by our regular weekly and monthly users. Funding of major repairs and replacements comes from fund raising such as running the bars at parties and events, the beer festival, the Burns Night event and New Year’s Eve party. This is essential to provide income to cover even the smallest repair bills. Donations such as via the 100 club or the plaques, or private donations can help towards specific items. There is a programme of repair and replacement work that the Committee wishes to fund over the next few years to keep the hall in good condition so that we can continue to attract events, weddings, parties etc. This will include refurbishment work in the kitchen and improved storage, especially of items such as the trestle tables.

BOOKINGS FOR AUTUMN 2014 AND SPRING 2015 We are taking bookings for spring/summer 2015 and many weekends in autumn 2014 are already booked. If you are planning to use the hall for an event in the next 12 months, please don’t leave it too late to book, or you may find that someone has beaten you to it. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. I have lived in Bramham for well over 50 years, and I feel I have to say that I have never seen our churchyard looking as lovely as it does now. It really looks as if someone cares for it. Chips Browning and his small team have worked endlessly this year to retrieve the churchyard to its present glory from the overgrown state it had become. Congratulations and special thanks for this must be passed on to Jeremy Kendall who has recently spent many hours to get it looking like it does now. The churchyard will be looking its best when the Judges of Yorkshire in Bloom come to the village on 11th July. Bramham can really be proud if its Churchyard. Thank you to everyone concerned. 33 COPING AS A CARER in association with Home Instead Senior Care, Wetherby and North Leeds. Being a family carer can be one of the most fulfilling things that you can do, but on the flip side, it can also be an overwhelming and thankless task. Anyone that cares for somebody is likely to have many unanswered questions regarding both the care they are giving to their loved one and the care they owe themselves. To help answer some of those questions, we have compiled some top tips to help you become the best carer you can be: 1. Take a guilt-free break – allowing yourself some alone time to unwind a few times each month will help you to reenergise and provide a much better quality of care. 2. Be patient – it can often take time to get into a consistent care routine. Keeping calm and patient will allow this to happen whilst also respecting your loved one’s dignity and independence. 3 Help them to feel good – A new haircut or item of clothing can do wonders for your loved one’s confidence and self-worth, so don’t forget to treat them every now and then! 4 Accept that they have changed – the person you care for is unlikely to be the person you knew them to be. Accepting this change will help you to stay in the here and now and give the best care possible. 5 Accept help – in order to properly take care of someone else, you need to also be able to take care of yourself. When people offer to help you, it’s ok to accept it. For further help and advice or information about Home Instead Senior Care, please contact margaret.brennan@homeinstead.co.uk or call 01937 220510.

35 OPEN GARDENS AND PLANT SALE Bramham Community Action Group held the plant sale and open gardens event on Bank Holiday Sunday and despite the weather the day was very successful. Bramham residents opened their gardens to visitors and everyone said how much they enjoyed visiting them. We had many visitors from outside the village, who all said that it was so nice to come to a village new to the open gardens scheme. We even had visitors from nearby villages who are holding their first open gardens to see how we did it! We would like to thank all the garden owners for opening up and also special thanks to all at the Church for opening the Church and grounds and doing teas and refreshments. Also many thanks to the Folly Lane Allotments for allowing visitors to see how to do the "Good Life" Thanks also to Red Hall Nurseries for providing such superb plants we had to sell. The nurseries are run by Leeds City Council just off the A58 and their plants are both good quality and value. Due to the success of the day we raised over ÂŁ300 towards the Gala. Keith Innocent

MONDAY CLUB There will be no regular meetings in July and August Instead, on Thursday 3rd July we have been invited to Tadcaster Grammar School for afternoon tea and entertainment and on 4th August a lunch outing is being arranged. 36 YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION Together with friends from Aberford and Boston Spa branches, we enjoyed an Open Meeting in May, at which Samantha Abbey of GoAhead Hats displayed and spoke about some of her exotic creations. We were also allowed to try them on and even model them! This being followed by one of our popular suppers. Many thanks to our members who supplied some lovely food, which was much enjoyed. On 16th July, we shall be going out for our usual Summer lunch (details later) The Boston Spa Branch of YCA has unfortunately had to close, but we are delighted that four of their members have decided to join us at Bramham. Like Boston Spa, many YCA branches are having to close because of lack of Committee Members, so we are extremely lucky to have an excellent and vibrant Chairperson and Committee at Bramham. We are a small friendly bunch, and if you would like to join us, we would be delighted to have you. Jean Dale

WiSE (Wetherby in Support of the Elderly) is a registered charity overseen by a Board of Trustees. We are currently looking for new Trustees to help support the work we do. If you are interested in joining us, the questions and answers below may help you. What skills/abilities should I have if I want to become a Trustee? You will need to be interested in helping to develop work to support older people in Wetherby and the surrounding villages. You might already be a volunteer or have heard about our work from others. You don't need to have a particular skill but if you have then that would be great. What time commitment is involved? The Trustees meet once a month to keep an eye on the strategic development of WiSE's work within the community and, in particular, its relationship with its funder Leeds City Council. In addition to these meetings Trustees also sit on one or more sub committees which focus on specific areas. Most of our existing Trustees are also volunteers with WiSE but that is not a requirement if you want to be a Trustee. How do I find out more? You might want to talk it through with someone before you express an interest. If so please contact Dave Masterman, Chair of Trustees, at the following email address; d.masterman@w-ise.org.uk

FOOD BANKS NEED OUR SUPPORT Thousands of people regularly go hungry because they have not enough money to make ends meet. They face impossible choices between eating and heating, feeding their children or paying the rent or the mortgage. Food banks provide responsive emergency relief with a pack of 3 days balanced food. The food banks are run by volunteers who work in collaboration with medical staff, social workers and other caring services. As times get tougher the number of food banks is increasing. Our nearest food bank is at Acomb in York and we have containers in Bramham Church for you to provide items of food. They will then be taken weekly to the food bank. The Church is usually open Friday mornings from 8.30 am, or on a Sunday morning. As you go shopping remember the food bank and buy some item to put in the container in Bramham Church. Your generosity will be much appreciated .

Rev’d Stanley Menzies

Thought for the Month Tough times never last Tough people do.

The July Smile As a truck driver in Essex stops for a red light, a blonde in her car pulls up alongside. She jumps out of her car, runs up to his truck cab, and knocks on the door. The driver lowers the window and she says "Hi, my name is Sharon and you're losing some of your load!" The trucker ignores her and proceeds down the street. When the truck stops for another red light, the girl again catches up. She jumps out of her car, runs up to his cab, and knocks on the door. The guy lowers the window, and she says, "Hi, my name is Sharon and you ARE losing some of your load." Shaking his head, the driver ignores her again and continues down the street. At the third red light, the same thing happens again. All out of breath, the blonde gets out of her car, runs up, knocks on the truck cab door. The driver lowers the window again and she says 'Hi, my name is Sharon and you really are losing some of your load! When the light turns green, the driver revs up and races to the next light. When he stops this time, he hurriedly gets out of his truck and runs back to the blonde He knocks on her window and as she lowers it, he says.. "Hi, my name is Kevin and I'm gritting the road."
