Clergy Letter from The Rev. Stanley Menzies “In every age we are faced with the determination of God to transform all created life in justice, truth and peace. In every age we are faced with the deliberate self-limitation of God through the choice of human beings to be partners in that work of transformation.” This theological comment of Ian Fraser’s is strikingly contemporary and apposite for our time. Today we are faced by many issues that perplex us; we are troubled by the violence and disasters across our world and wrestle with increasingly pressurised lifestyles. We are concerned that climate change, greed and diminishing resources suggest the future will be difficult for life on earth. We do want all created life to be transformed in justice, peace and truth but are we willing to be partners in the work of transformation? Before we answer that question there are other questions to ask and be asked of us. Such reflection helps us to understand the journey we are on and to delve deeper into our search for meaning. The first question asked in the first book of the Bible is asked by God. ”Man where are you?” It is the question that still needs to be asked in the corridors of power, in the great financial institutions, in the Church and in our lives. Are you working for the common good; are you using your time and gifts on behalf of your partner, children and neighbour and it is the question that comes first. It relates to the future of humanity and all creation and requires to be answered with integrity. Too often the question is ignored, not listened to or put to one side for another day. It is a personal call to each one of us and we need to find time to listen to the question and engage in the work of love for the future of our children and our neighbours. It is also the vocation of all who exercise power, take decisions on behalf of others and who may determine our future. The second question is asked by the prophet, Micah ”What does the Lord require of you?” His answer is worth reflecting on. ”to do justice, to love kindness and to walk humbly with your God.” If we are to transform all created life this is not a bad place to begin. The prophet’s order is striking: justice, kindness and humility and perhaps we can learn from it. We start with justice and we do live in an unjust world. Poverty, hunger and violence are the constant companions of millions of our fellow human beings. In this age of globalisation the gap between rich and poor has widened, greed, corruption and inhumanity exercise devastating effects. We are asked to do justice and Nelson Mandela crystallised the matter when he asked the Davos World Economic Forum;” Is globalisation only to benefit the powerful and the financiers, speculators, investors and traders? Does it offer nothing to men, women and children ravaged by the violence of poverty?” His response to his own question was to pursue kindness and live his life for the benefit of his people. He also walked humbly and wisely on his long walk to freedom. We are still on that walk to freedom and hope. May we seek to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly. Continued on page 5

5 Clergy Letter - Continued from page 3
The third question is asked by Jesus to Peter, ”Do you love me?” Peter responded “of course I do”. “Then feed my flock.” Jesus asked questions of many people. He engaged with them in conversation which is a two-way process. He still continues in that conversation in our 21st century with men, women and children across our world.” do you love the way of truth, justice, peace, kindness and being open to others? In our best moments the human response is: ”Yes we do” Back comes the response: ”Then feed my people, look after our children”. All these questions are worthy of reflection and we have to learn to listen to them. We may not have much faith and we may doubt our role in the work of transformation. But God has faith in humanity and that gives us hope for the future and enables us to see the true value of others so that we do look after them and treasure all creation.

ORDINATIONS Our congratulations and best wishes go to Glenda Webb and Jane Brown who are being ordained to the Diaconate by the Archbishop on Sunday, 5th July at 10.00am in York Minster. This is a very special moment for both of them and I ask all of you to remember them in prayer. Both Glenda and Jane are currently completing M.A. work. Glenda has lived and worked here for 27 years and has made a huge contribution to the parishes of Bramham Benefice. She is serving her title at Brayton with The Rev. Pete Watson. Glenda is the seventh person from our parishes to have offered herself for priestly service since I arrived here. We wish Glenda great joy as she moves to a new scene, but she will continue to live with the Family here. Jane, with her husband Paul, having completed her course at St. John’s College, Durham, moved into Thorp Arch vicarage in the middle of June. Jane comes with a strong background of leadership and management in public health services. Jane and Paul’s daughter is Beth who lives away. Jane will be the sixth and last curate to be trained during my time here. A big and very warm welcome to Jane, Paul and Beth. We are not taking a coach to York Minster but even if you haven’t ordered a ticket you may still attend the ceremony which will last about two hours. Jane’s reception is at Clifton Parish Church, which is her ‘sending’ parish and Glenda’s is in St. Mary’s Parish Room. If you are not able to attend the Ordination itself you are still very welcome to join the reception for Glenda which will start about 1.15pm. However, we do need to know numbers for catering purposes by 1st July, so please phone Sarah at the Parish Office (844402) to book a place. Canon Peter Bristow.

WOULD YOU BELIEVE IT? The Ladies of the Benefice left the comforts of their own homes to be sent to the outer reaches of Scarborough; to Wydale Hall. They had to endure late morning lie-ins, three course breakfasts, copious cups of tea and coffee and buffet lunches. The whole thing had to be wound up each evening with a visit to the bar and a three course dinner. How did they all manage? Well I tell you, this year’s retreat was made into a resounding success by the WEATHER! Last year we were cooped up in the house with non-stop rain, and this year there was rain [oh yes, just a little] but there was sunshine and invigorating gales! You would have found the hardy souls out on the pathways in sturdy shoes and zipped up coats taking the air. Seriously folks; there were nine of us who found the tranquillity of the Diocesan Retreat House a restorative break and there was still time to study the Book of Esther and have lively discussions. We are booked in for next year, 30th May -1st June 2016- why don’t you consider joining us? You will be very welcome.

STEPPING STONES Stepping stones this month was all about nature and sowing seeds. The children planted sunflower seeds in the church yard and had lots of fun getting mucky and in touch with nature! After they had cleaned up & had refreshments they went inside to create some collage pictures using leaves, flowers and twigs they had collected from around the church yard....they all did an awesome job. Kate Kennedy then talked to them about the Parable of the Mustard Seed, and how seeds grow and how our faith grows. The children who attended the family Service at church did a wonderful job of reading the intercession prayers – we were very proud of them. It’s wonderful to see the children growing in confidence and really getting involved with the family service. Next month is our last Stepping Stones have some fun & games outside if the weather is nice. It will be at the church at 5.30pm on Friday 10th July. The children who attend Stepping Stones are mainly from Bramham, Boston Spa and Thorp Arch schools. Any child is welcome to attend regardless of whether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday at 10am. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. All Saints Church Bramham, serving Bramham’s Community for over 860 years.

July is a busy month with many activities happening in the community. We are settling in nicely at Wetherby Social Club, the venue is ideal for our events and the staff are very friendly and supportive; there is always a warm welcome waiting for us. The Jigsaw Club takes place at Wetherby Social Club every alternate Thursday between 2pm – 3pm. Come and join us on 2nd, 16th and 30th July. There’s a £2.50 entry fee for refreshments and you’ll have the chance to meet new people whilst doing a jigsaw! Instead of an Easter Matinee this year we thought we would shake things up and have a SUMMER SOCIAL at Wetherby Social Club. This will be on Wednesday 15th July from 1.30pm – 3.30pm. This is a ticket only event and costs just £5 including sandwiches and refreshments. The singer will be Emma James, a very popular entertainer who has regular bookings in this area. If you’d like to come along, please contact karen@w-ise.org.uk or call 01937 588994 to buy tickets. The Memory Cafés are always very popular and well attended. At Boston Spa Village Hall we have The Boston Tea Party every 2nd Tuesday of every month from 2pm – 4pm. The entertainment in July is Rex Stott’s Ukulele Band. The Sunshine Café at Collingham Village Hall takes place on the last Wednesday of every month from 2pm – 4pm. Rex Stott will be giving a talk and singing wartime songs. These events have a £2 entry fee which includes cake and tea and coffee. Our well attended knitting group gathers from 1.30pm – 3.00pm every Thursday. This is a busy day as Zumba is also held every Thursday at Boston Spa Village Hall. On alternate Thursdays, also at Boston Spa Village Hall, the poetry group meets to recite poems from their favourite poets or recite their own work. The dates are 9th and 23rd July from 2pm – 3pm. There’s a small £2 entry fee which includes refreshments. If you like to sing, please come along and join The Boston Buskers, our new singing group. Talent isn’t necessary!! Just turn up on Tuesday 28th July from 2pm – 3pm. Our £3 entry fee includes refreshments. The Howlers is our singing group for people with Dementia and their carers. This is a fun, light hearted afternoon and a nice opportunity for carers to meet other carers and enjoy singing songs from the past. If this appeals to you, please feel free to join us at Wetherby Social Club every last Thursday in the month. Our £2 entry fee includes refreshments. For further details about any of our social groups and activities, please contact Karen Leaf, WiSE Activities Coordinator on 01937 588994 or visit our website www.w-ise.org.uk

June 2015 Update ....communica ng with residents
To All Bramham Residents – an update from the June meeting. Parish Councillors: The Parish Council would like to extend its thanks to exCouncillors who, although having decided not to continue, have served on the Council during the last four years and made a valuable contribution to the Council and to our village. We also are very pleased to welcome our new Councillor, Linda Richards. We are delighted that interest has been shown in filling the vacancies on the Council and by the time you read this update we expect to have co-opted new councillors. We’ll tell you more next time. Headley Fields: We are disappointed to hear that Leeds City Council (LCC) is including Headley Fields in the list of possible sites for development, and perturbed to read the front page Wetherby News article 28 May which contained an implication that Bramham residents are in favour of it. The Council has sent a letter to the Wetherby News advising that in fact every response received from residents has been strongly opposed to the build of a new town on this green belt land, and that because such a development would take so long to develop, it would not in any case solve the area’s housing issues in the short to medium term. It is likely that LCC will hold a public consultation in the Autumn. As ever – PLEASE DO GIVE US YOUR VIEWS! Playing field gym equipment: Two residents have been helping us with research into adult gym equipment for the playing field and this has been extremely useful. We are now preparing to go out to tender. Next Meeting: The next meeting will be on Wednesday 1st July, 7.30pm in the Senior Citizen’s Centre. Residents are welcome to attend. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Casual Help Required During the Summer months it is inevitable that we will require some casual help as our gardeners do go on holiday. Also if the weather is particularly dry more help with watering may be required. The amount of time involved is really very small and the more volunteers we have makes life easier. Please would you consider putting your name forward to help in these circumstances? If so will you please contact:-

YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMENS ASSOCIATION Our meeting in May involved the making of “SOFT POTS” under the guidance of Mrs Baxter. We filled one leg of a pair of tights with compost, gravel and sparkly bits, added a colourful plant and achieved a most attractive and pretty end product. Watching members endeavouring to fill a narrow tight with a rather messy filling caused a great deal of amusement. Our supply of tea, coffee and biscuits in the Senior Citizen’s Shelter on Scarecrow Day proved to be very popular and many thanks are due to Paul and Anne Topping who organised everything. Our next meeting will be our Summer lunch on Wednesday 15th July which will be at the White Swan, Wighill at 12.30 pm for 1.00 pm .

THE MYSTERY OF BRAMHAM POTTERY The Bramham archive has a couple of references to the existence of Bramham Pottery, but only to the extent of where it was sited, behind the old primary school on Clifford Road. Now, thanks to tile expert and historian Chris Blanchett, we have some fascinating information to add to the archive. A newspaper article of 23rd May 1938 relates that two local girls, possibly from Thorner, Rita Clayton and Constance Walker, both ex-students of Leeds Art School, searched for suitable premises to start a pottery business. This they found behind the primary school on Clifford Road in the shape of an old shoeing forge built in 1715 and unused for 20 years. They cleaned the place up and used it for several years as a pottery, producing various items including vases, bowls, crockery and fresco tiles. There the trail runs cold, maybe the war intervened or the girls married and moved from the area ? If anyone has any further information on the products and maybe Rita Clayton and Constance Walker, I’d be pleased to hear from you. You can find pictures of the fresco tiles and copies of the newspaper articles on the Historic Bramham website www.historicbramham.org.uk/folder47-a.html or use the search engine to find ‘pottery’.

Thought for the month The most important thing a father can do for his children is to love their mother. Theodore Hesburgh
A smile for July A sweet grandmother rang St Joseph’s Hospital and asked timidly ‘Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing’. The operator said ‘I’ll be glad to help dear. Can you tell me the patient’s name and room number?’ The grandmother, in her weak tremulous voice replied ‘Norma Findlay, Room 302’ The operator replied ‘Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse's station for that room’ After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said ‘I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine. Her blood results just came back normal and her consultant Dr Cohen has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow.’ The grandmother said ‘Thank you. That’s wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.’ The operator replied ‘You’re more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?’ The grandmother said ‘No, I’m Norma Findlay in Room 302. No one tells me anything.
