Clergy Letter from Rev’d Andy Grant
As I write this clergy letter, the recent news has once again been filled with atrocity, tragedy and disaster. The residents of Boston in the USA are still coming to terms with the aftermath of the terrorist bombings and shootings; people in Dhaka are still reeling from the factory building collapse that has left hundreds dead; the civil war in Syria is raging on unabated; and closer to home, the minibus crash on the M62 has brought loss of life and injury to a group of women on a hen party. No doubt, by the time you have read this letter, more bad news will have hit our TV screens; more pain, more shock, more lives changed forever. Atrocities, tragedies and disasters are so frequent that we come to expect them. No sooner is one piece of bad news reported, then another follows, and how readily we forget the horrors of the very recent past. Of course when personal tragedy strikes, we are no longer looking in, but are intrinsically caught up in the trauma, shock and pain for ourselves. The presence of evil and suffering within our world continues to raise questions as to how it got there in the first place, and why it continues. The bible itself gives us a picture not only of human beings exercising their freedom to make bad choices (often with disastrous consequences), but also accidents and disasters, what is termed ‘natural evil’ (namely, natural disasters). One answer therefore to the question as to
why there is evil and suffering in the world, points to the freedom that exists within nature and humanity that allows things to go tragically wrong. However, that is little comfort to families in Boston, Dhaka, Syria, or West Yorkshire who are lost in their grief. In 1943, a seventeen year old German boy was assigned to an anti-aircraft battery in Hamburg whilst the RAF was in the process of destroying the city. This boy was located in the centre of the city and thousands were dying all around him in the firestorm caused by the bombing. His name was Jurgen Moltmann and he went on to be one of the greatest Christian theologians of our time. In the midst of the bombing, he recalls crying out to God for the first time in his life: “Where are you!” He suggests that questions like ‘why does God lets bad things happen’, or’ why evil happens’, will never be sufficiently answered with any sensitivity in our current human experience; indeed they are usually the questions posed by onlookers to tragedy. Yet to those in distress, to those caught up in pain and suffering, the cries to God for help do not go unheard. God himself in Christ plumbed the depths of human suffering and death on the cross, and continues to share in all human suffering today, not as an onlooker who empathises from a distance, but as one who utterly inhabits and knows that pain and suffering too.
Rev Andy Grant

THERE HAVE BEEN MAJOR CHANGES AT THE OLD PEOPLES SHELTER Firstly the change of name to The Senior Citizens Centre. This is really a very welcome change as when I used to open the door I expected to see a number of grey haired people in Sleeping Bags!!! The benches have been refurbished and the Village Pump has returned home.
Outside the Centre, the mileage stone has also been refurbished and this is now very impressive and a serious part of the history of the Village None of this comes without a lot of hard work so many thanks to the gardener Frank Wood and his band of helpers. Ernest Nichols Bramham in Bloom

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Assistant Cleaner required Due to the hall being used so frequently for classes and meetings during the week, the regular cleaner does not always have time to fully complete all the weekly cleaning tasks. The committee has decided to explore the possibility of engaging an assistant cleaner to undertake the cleaning of the kitchen and toilets, whilst the existing cleaner concentrates on the floors and other tasks. Anyone interested should phone the Village Hall on 07432 330972, and leave your details if the phone is not answered. Village Hall AGM The AGM was held on 26 April. The Chairman and treasurer presented their annual reports and annual accounts. One of the main items discussed was the need to obtain grants and funding from outside bodies to complete the restoration work on the hall and cottage. The community fund grant for this year is likely to fund only the roof insulation project, and not the bar refurbishment. Quotes for the work have been invited from at least three different individuals. The Chairman extended his thanks to the committee who give up much of their free time to keep the hall in good order, and to other residents in the village who also donate their time for free – it is very much appreciated. Roger Freeman stood down as secretary, and will be replaced by Chris Wray. Roger was thanked for all his work over many years and has agreed to remain on the general management Committee. Fiona Henderson officially resigned from the committee. In her absence the committee extended its thanks to Fiona for her work over many years. The accounts will be published in a later parish magazine. October 26 – Bramham Beer festival – this year we are spreading our ales further, beyond Yorkshire, so will have a theme of Beers of the World. Sponsorship will be available as for previous years – anyone willing to sponsor a barrel, the glasses, the food or the whole event should contact Becky on 07932 957806 The Committee is often available to run a bar for other bookings (and take that element of planning away from you) – all bar profits will go towards the on-going Restoration plans. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. 7 BEATING THE BOUNDS 2013 The village hall was the starting line for the third annual Beating the Bounds walk, and once again a record 45 walkers was blessed with bright weather in what has been a very late, cold spring. Cleverly planned by our leader, Neil Ferres, the route of over 14 miles broadly follows the boundary of the ancient parish of Bramham cum Oglethorpe. The support of volunteer drivers allows you to walk single or multiple sections, and to get a lift out to your starting point, or back to the Square from the section that you’ve just walked. A service that is very much appreciated by those who haven’t the time (or the stamina maybe) to complete the whole route.
We headed off northwards through the woods opposite the Primary School, following Carr Beck all the way to its confluence with the Wharfe at Boston Spa. The woodland vegetation was noticeably behind what we saw on the route last year, when we’d had summer temperatures in March, of course. We followed the river downstream for a while, amazed that Bramham extends as far as this, and paused outside the former paper mill at Newton Kyme, where some new walkers joined us. Then we headed southwards up the gentle slope, in a long line of animated conversations and some very happy dogs. We passed the Oglethorpe woods and reached our next stop, on Toulston Lane, the old Roman road to York that follows the limestone ridge. Continued on page 9

9 Beating the Bounds - continued from page 7 Then it was time to cross the road and climb to the high point of our route on Warren Lane, with magnificent views northwards up to the Howardian Hills and eastwards over to the Wolds. Along the dead straight road past Headley, we glimpsed the very special First World War hanger over the hedge, and imagined the sight of Avro 504s and Sopwith Camels buzzing around the parish airspace. By the time we’d reached the end of Spen Common Lane and the Battle of Bramham Moor sign, we had a group of 45 walkers (the biggest ever) ready to enjoy the splendid stroll through the woods, follies and parkland of Bramham Park. This has to be one of the best lowland walks in Yorkshire, and seeing it on a sunny day in spring, before the trees are fully in leaf, gives you a wonderful sense of the majesty of the huge beech avenues, and the carefully planned vistas of the estate not usually visible from the public footpath. Our thanks to Nick Lane Fox for allowing us to follow such an interesting route. Thanks to the hospitality of two of our number, we were able to enjoy our picnics with very welcome cups of tea on the lawn of Terry Lug farmhouse, before setting off for the return leg over the dam on Carr Beck, down to the lost village of Wothersome. Usually the wettest part of the walk underfoot, the next section through the woods and out to the site of the former Roman villa passed without a hitch and we turned back south-eastwards, over the A1 footbridge and back to Bramham, and a welcome pint (or two!) at the Red Lion. Another fantastic day, and once again we are all indebted to Rev Stanley Menzies and Neil Ferres for making this such an enjoyable annual event on the Bramham activity calendar. Make a note to join us next year!
GET FIT FOR SUMMER! Why pay expensive gym subscriptions when you can get fit for free by delivering the Parish Magazine? We are looking to reduce the size of some of the delivery rounds so we would welcome volunteers who can spare about 30 minutes each month to deliver the magazine in the village. Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk
May 2013 Update ....communica ng with residents
To all Bramham residents Here is the update from our May Parish Council meeting: Police Report: There have been 3 incidents during April in Bramham. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of a free security survey offered by the police and reduced price AVOCET locks. Contact Wetherby Police Station. Our Community Support Officer also advises use of the police facebook page – search LEEDS POLICE then ‘like’ Wetherby and Harewood npt. Bramham Senior Citizens’ Centre: The Parish Council would like to thank the resident who created the nameplate for the newly named Centre. It looks very good indeed and this is much appreciated. Thank you also to Mr Norgate for obtaining some plants for the garden. The centre is a focal point for the village and due to a lot of hard work by residents the grounds are looking wonderful, pop in and have a look next time you’re passing. Playground: A resident kindly raised a question about “rumours” in the village about possible relocation of the playground. We would like to clarify that any discussions about the playing field are simply ideas at the moment. No decisions have been made, and we do not currently have funding available to re-vamp the playground. Funding is being investigated and if and when we have any funds available we will consult with the village to seek your input too. Better Broadband: To register an interest in improving broadband speeds in our area go to www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk. The more people who report a need, the more likely we are to succeed in getting a better service. Option Agreement: We have had no further information from Leeds City Council regarding exercising the option agreement to buy the strip of land along the playing field. The matter is in the hands of our solicitor who continues to chase matters to try and bring this to a conclusion. Bramham Sports and Leisure Association / Pavilion: A lease for the playing field has been drafted by our solicitor and offered to the BSLA. We await a response. 770 Bus Service: We are delighted to report that the campaign against reducing the bus service has been successful. We will not now lose our Sunday evening service. Leeds Festival: Ticket applications are oversubscribed by 112 so unfortunately not all applicants will be successful. Thank you to Cllr Fiona Henderson for her many hours of hard work. 13 Council Report continued from page 11 Primrose Hill Care Home: Cllr Val Whitbread attended the Boston Spa Annual Parish Meeting, where representatives from Leeds City Council Adult Social Services answered questions regarding Primrose Hill. They advised that the decision regarding closure is not yet made and gave assurances that issues raised by residents, their families and the public will be taken into account. A decision is expected in September. Website: We are aware that there is some confusion regarding the official Parish Council website. We would like to clarify that the website www.thisisbramham.co.uk is the only official Bramham Parish Council website. Information is being copied onto another website and this appears to have given rise to the confusion. Please browse our website for details of what’s happening in your village, “like it” on facebook, and follow us on your twitter account to keep up to date with all the latest news stories. Next Meeting: The next Council meeting will be held on Wednesday 6 June, 7.30 pm in the Village Hall Supper Room. Residents are welcome to join us. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on our website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. Contact:

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM A gift from the family of Mr Edward Todd who passed away on the 3rd April 2013 We recently received a donation of £100. The family can be assured that it will be put to good use to continue and improve our floral displays in the Village. It is particularly pleasing that we have been thought about at a time like this.
Photo shows dog dirt on the grass at the side of the Churchyard path. This area is kept short for the benefit of visitors, not for use as a dog’s lavatory. Please keep all dogs on a short lead and pick up any waste. Unfortunately this is not happening in all cases.
Many thanks to the whole family and our sympathy at their loss. Ernest Nichols Chairman Bramham in Bloom If you are not the culprit, do you know who is???

THE BRAMHAM RUNNING CLUB Springing into action! Since my last article the Bramham Running Club has seen a number of new members join us on the weekly runs and the warmer weather has also encouraged the return of runners we’ve not seen for a while… We’ve also had some fantastic achievements from a number of members and as always have been clocking up a huge team miles target which is approaching the 21,000 mark!
Achievements to be acknowledged… To start us off … Alison Mackie completed the Newby Hall Duathlon in early April and achieved PBs in both the runs and the cycle … Jess Learmonth was 1st lady in the Tadcaster triathlon for the second year running and came 7th overall … 2 members completed the Leeds Half Marathon course and both achieved PBs … and finally Sue and Simon Jones completed the epic Etape du Dales – a seriously tough 112 mile cycle on the roads through the Yorkshire Dales… Well done to everyone who took part!
H.I.I.T… Thanks to Mrs Mackie a few of us have caught the H.I.I.T (High Intensity Interval Training) bug! This type of training is great fun and is a good way of improving strength, speed and burns calories faster! Sessions will entail either hill running (we’re lucky in Bramham since you can’t run more than half a mile without hitting a considerable incline!) or speed work on flatter ground. We always warm up and cool down properly and you can do as much or as little, as fast or as slow as you like. The sessions take place on Wednesday or Thursday evenings at 6.00pm; the day is confirmed earlier in the week by text. If you would like to try one of these sessions or find out more please send a text with your name to 07950 630703.

It only takes seconds for the ‘Opportunist Burglar’ to enter your property and if you have left bags, laptops, wallet, house keys and vehicle keys in view then the Opportunist Burglar is extremely happy. A vehicle is ready and waiting for a quick get away. NEVER leave keys in a vehicle when it is unattended, especially when you return home from shopping and you are unloading. AVOCET EURO LOCK TS 007 3* The Wetherby Crime Panel are carrying out a replacement uPVC Door Lock program. Whilst PC’s and PCSO’s carry out your requested FREE Home Security Survey they often find the door locks are not up to the current required standard. You will be asked if the Wetherby Crime Panel may call and discuss the replacement service they are carrying out. The replacement lock barrels cost £37.50p each and usually only take minutes to change. It is NOT necessary to change the door handle/furniture ONLY the lock barrel. If you are interested in having your FREE Police Home Survey contact Wetherby NPT on 0113 285 5374 leaving your contact details and someone will get back to you. Remember the number for NON Emergency Calls is 1 0 1 Emergency - Immediate Police Attendance still use 9 9 9 Members of The Crime Panel are available to attend your Community Events and to give Crime Prevention talks, morning, afternoons or evenings. Thank you.
Being an ex-resident of Bramham (I was born in the Red Lion Pub in 1933) I often visit the village and have to say I am most impressed by the refurbishment of the Old Peoples Shelter, which is now fittingly named Bramham Senior Citizens Centre. The garden is a delight and has been much improved by the new seating. Inside looks so clean, comfortable and welcoming, Bramham residents must be really pleased with the whole area. I was also impressed with the repair/refurbishment of Low Way, which has been needed for a considerable time. Alex Hearfield

ALL SAINTS CHURCH BRAMHAM IN NEED OF URGENT REPAIR! The beautiful 11th century grade II listed building in the middle of the village is in vital need of repairs and restoration to the church tower. People living in the village will have noted that in stark contrast to the churches in the surrounding villages flags have not flown over the church for many years to mark special occasions in the calendar. This is because access to the roof and flag pole is dangerous and has been forbidden by the insurers who refuse to cover anybody who would dare risk life and limb to help celebrate events in Bramham. In addition over the years weather has leaked into the tower and this has caused extensive damage to the fabric and the wooden beams as well as structures supporting the bells. A recent survey by the church authorities has said that work must be carried out to make the area strong and safe for the coming centuries and of course it goes without saying that the structure must be made weather proof as well. Whilst all this work is being carried out it would be sensible to re-design the access to the roof to make it safe and it would be a fitting climax to the restoration work to see the flag proudly flying over the village. The alternative scenario of the church without its tower is too bleak a picture to contemplate let alone happen! Unfortunately, such work will require raising about ÂŁ60,000. Whilst some funding may be found from English Heritage and other such bodies, the vast majority will have to be found from local residents and businesses in Bramham. To start the ball rolling an event will be held in Bramham Park on
SATURDAY 20TH JULY 2013
HOG ROAST HOG ROAST HOG ROAST HOG ROAST HOG ROAST By kind permission of Mr. Nicholas and the Honorable Rachel Lane Fox the grounds and private gardens will be open from 1pm. People will be able to walk throughout the park and visit areas which are otherwise closed. Please feel free to bring family and friends and your dogs, although the latter must be kept on leads at all times. To encourage you to see as much of the gardens a treasure hunt will be organized. At 4.30pm the HOG ROAST will be available and there will be a bar with local beer and foreign wines on sale. For those who would prefer tea and coffee this will also be available; for children under 6 years free squash will be provided. There will be face painting to add colour to the day. We hope that you will come and support this special event to keep the character of the village as it should be and take advantage of this rare opportunity to visit the whole of Bramham Park. Entry will be via the Terry Lug Farm at the blue gate on the Bramham/Thorner Road. Entry price is £10 per adult or £35 for a family ticket if booked in advance family ticket discounted to £30. All proceeds will go to All Saints Church Bramham Tower Restoration Fund. Further details contact: lisa@lisarevolta.com or chipmol@btinternet.com

As many of you will know, we opened the doors to the WiSE Owl Café for the Community, in Boston Spa Village Hall, at the beginning of January this year. Four months on and we are delighted to report that the Café is proving a big hit with customers. Many have commented on the friendly welcome they have received, the relaxed atmosphere, and the quality and variety of food and drink being served. On the menu is a lovely selection of teas, coffees and fruit juices, freshly prepared sandwiches, bacon butties and a delicious soup of the week, all sourced with seasonal ingredients from local suppliers wherever possible. For those with a sweet tooth, our homemade cakes are sure to please you and our recently introduced afternoon teas, at a very reasonable £8 for two people, are already really popular. The Café is open each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10.00am to 4.00pm and we very much look forward to welcoming you. To see a sample menu, visit www.w-ise.org.uk Like many of our services, the Café opening has only been made possible due to the much appreciated support of our many volunteers. On Sunday 14th April, Callum Walker, aged 23, successfully completed the Brighton Marathon on our behalf, in an amazing 3 hours, 59 minutes and 19 seconds, closely followed only seven days later, with the London Marathon, running this time on behalf of Home Instead Senior Care to raise money for Carers UK. We would like to say a huge thank you to Callum for his generosity and for raising a fantastic £1,000 for WiSE. If you think you’d like to join our team of volunteers, aged between 17 and 80+, then we’d love to hear from you. 2013 has seen an acceleration of new volunteers for our befriending scheme, plus new recruits for socials, along with bakers, soup makers and waiting staff for our new WiSE Owl Café. To find out how you could help us, please contact our Befriending Coordinator, Linda Dixon on 01937 588994 or email linda@w-ise.org.uk New WiSE Activities at the WiSE Owl Café, Boston Spa Village Hall:Knit one Purl WiSE – a weekly knitting group for those who’d like to have a knit and a natter. A social group for all abilities, if you are a keen knitter or you would like to learn to knit then this is the group for you and we look forward to welcoming you. Poetry & Prose - If poetry is more your forte, we’d love to see you at our monthly poetry and prose afternoons. Our group will meet again on Thursday 20th June between 2.00 pm and 3.00 pm. Further monthly dates will be announced in due course. Each session costs just £2 to include a cup of tea or coffee. If you’d like further information on either of our New activities, please call our WiSE Activities Coordinator, Lillian Allen on 01937 588994.

29 THE YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION Our Speaker in April was Mr Gerard Faricy whose talk entitled “Who will fund your long term care” helped to dispel our fears for the future by telling us of several schemes to protect our savings and assets, such as our homes. A most interesting and helpful talk. Our next meeting at 7.15 pm on Wednesday 19th June, in the Village Hall, will be an open evening, when Mr Roy Johanson will do a painting which he will then raffle in aid of his charity. Visitors are most welcome to join us and we shall provide our usual buffet supper at a charge of £2. Jean Dale
BRAMHAM IN BLOOM Where Have All The Flowers Gone !!! After such a poor start the gardeners gave a lot of TLC to their beds and produced some excellent results although later than usual. The problem that we face then is that in preparation for the Summer Plants the beds have to be cleared in advance to let the soil recover and have chicken manure added. Certainly the whole of Bramham in Bloom were upset to have to pull out plants that were giving such a great display but unfortunately there was no choice. Even the expertise of Bramham in Bloom cannot control the weather! Although we don’t like complaints, in this instance to some extent, we felt pleased that residents were as upset as we were and appreciated the displays. We have also had another set back as we have just been told that due to the continuing cold weather the Summer Plants will not be fit to go out until the 5th June. So they will struggle to be at their best by Judging Day on the 8th July. Bramham in Bloom Committee

Discoverers @ Bramham There was no Discoverers session in May due to the Christian Aid Service in Boston Spa. The June Discoverers will be on Sunday 9th June at 9.15am in the Village Hall. We really hope you can join us, to do some fun activities! (If the weather is nice we will do some outdoor activities). These events are open to all regardless of whether you attend any Church or not, they are held on the 2nd Sunday of the Month at 9.15am, in the village hall. It is simply a way to meet other families in the community with young children, all are welcome. We politely ask for a voluntary donation of £1 per child.

THE FINAL AND ONLY JUDGING THIS YEAR IS ON Monday 8th July The judging route will be as before, so now is the time for everyone, especially those on the route, to start planting tubs and baskets with summer bedding plants so that they will be at their best for the judging day. New Plants will be arriving on 5th June so Gardeners and Helpers should have brought their beds up to standard by Judging Day. As usual the Judges will stop in the square/garage area for some time around 10 am - 10.30 am to meet gardeners and residents, so if you can spare a few minutes please come along and talk to them. We are awarded more points if they see we have the support and interest of villagers. The Judges also take into consideration the tidiness of the village, so if you see any litter (i.e. bottles, crisp packets, plastic bags etc) please help to tidy up by disposing of them in a litter bin. Please don’t leave it to the Committee! It goes without saying that just taking part in the scheme enhances the status of the Village because not only do the Judges look at our floral displays but also the Village as a whole, particularly on the route that they will take through the Village. It is very important that the posters are displayed as it gives the Judges a good indication of the support in the Village for the Yorkshire in Bloom entry. Once the judging is over, the posters can be taken down in preparation for 2014!! Marks are awarded for :- Cleanliness and tidiness of communal areas, General tidiness of gardens on the judging route, any personal floral displays in support of improving the environment, ie hanging baskets, hay racks, specific garden displays. Fancy a morning cycling in God’s own country? Then why not enter this year’s Wetherby Cycle Ride. Ann and Jeff Newton have been organising the event for the past 15 years, it has now become an estab-
younger children. The organisers are keen to encourage as many participants as possible, Ann says “We have seen the benefits that the money raised has provided in terms of the improvements in cancer detection and treatment, particularly in the impact this has had on the quality of life for those people diagnosed”. A number of the participants, who have themselves had treatment for various cancers, have returned every year to support us and have expressed their appreciation of the value of the work funded. Again this year the money raised will be supporting the research conducted in St James Hospital, Leeds by Professor Alan Melcher into using common viruses to destroy cancer cells. The event is yet again being sponsored by Cyclesense of Tadcaster, and as before they are covering all the costs. This means that all the money raised by participants will go directly to help Cancer Research UK
David Stainthorpe of Cyclesense says: “It is great to lished feature of the local calendar, it raises money for be involved with the event, Ann and Jeff put a lot of charity and last year 233 people took part and raised hard work into organising a safe and fun ride. THANK YOU TO THE VILLAGE SHOP So many thanks are due to Andrea and Joanne (and Zoe) at the Village Shop, who are sadly leaving us to move on. Andrea to the joys of retirement and Joanne to another venture in life. They have been brilliant in supporting Bramham Church by helping to advertise many fund raising activities i.e. Xmas Cards, Calendars, Posters to name just a few. We shall certainly miss them, but we wish them well for the future and look forward to getting to know Lynn, their successor. Gill Young on behalf of The Village Church Council
38 WELLBEING RETREAT (see poster on page 35) It’s half way through the year and you may well be feeling in need of a “pick you up”. Well if that’s the case, you might want to consider coming along to Sicklinghall on June 3rd or 8th, where you will experience a day for you. This is a retreat, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, where you will be able to take time out to consider what it is you really want from life, what your goals are and how you can achieve them. This isn’t necessarily for those who want to climb Mount Everest or swim the channel (although you never know!) but it’s for everyone who wants to be happy and enjoy life. Come along and learn about mindfulness, meditation, nutrition and yoga, as well as other tools to “reach your potential”. Penny, Trish & Suzanne

Thought for the Month
SOMETHING TO MAKE YOU THINK One day, a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how poor people live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "It was great, Dad." "Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yes," said the son. "So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father. The son answered, "I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden, and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lanterns in our garden, and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard, and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on, and they have fields that go beyond our sight. We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs. We have walls around our property to protect us; they have friends to protect them." The boy's father was speechless. Then his son added, "Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."
