Clergy Letter from Rev’d Andy Grant Everybody worships is the worship of self. The human sense of something! Human desire and adoration focuses upon the object of beings are worshipping desire and returns to the heart from where it creatures! I wonder if you think this is true or not. Many people may deny this for they regard worship as an increasingly outdated practice, connected to the idea of religion with which they have no interest or belief. In reducing the idea of worship as something only religious people do though, is to entertain subtle self-delusional thoughts. At the heart of human motivation lies self-interest. If we are honest, much of what we do can often be with ourselves in mind (even if the outward act might be for the benefit of another). So in life we have to contend with our natural instincts towards self-interest, and the sooner we are honest with ourselves about that the better. Yet when we mix our undeniable capacity for self-interest with those deep and powerful impulses to worship, then we have a problem. The worship of ‘self’ results and then we act on it. ‘Where your treasure is, there your heart will also be’ said Jesus. He meant that what we place value on can captivate our hearts. What we value, we give worth to, and giving worth is a way of describing worship. Human beings worship from the heart, and that worship has to be directed somewhere. In the ancient world people worshipped statues, trees, the sun, the stars etc and today things are not that much different. It is unsurprising today to hear of people worshipping money, worshipping a celebrity, worshipping a car, a beautiful home, or sex, material goods etc. We might hear these things said glibly, but they betray the sickness that plagues the human condition, that of misdirected worship. The irony is that though the worship from the heart can be aimed at all these things I have mentioned, behind them all
came. There is a personal pay off for worshipping something and it is all about selfinterest, the worship of self, and satisfaction of personal desires. It is a vicious circle that never fulfils, yet lures us back time after time.
In today’s climate, I often hear that people make moral decisions based upon the idea that something is OK if it feels good and hurts noone. That’s fine if you are only going to measure the immediately tangible or evidential outcomes. Yet self-interest often does unseen damage. Worshipping materialistic goods or money breeds greed and fuels the desire for more. Worshipping and thirsting for power leads to exploitation. Worshipping sex fuels lust and does a hidden damage to relationships and respect. We know inwardly and in time see outwardly the results of human self-interest, self-worship, and self-interest. Governments can legislate to contain it, but cannot legislate to change the heart, the source of desires and impulses. Human beings are worshipping creatures so worship must be directed towards its rightful place. The Christian belief is that for the right kind of human benefit and flourishing, worship must be God-centred. In doing so we give God worth, and exchange the sinful ‘benefits’ of being captivated by greed, sinful desires, shame and guilt, for the joyous benefits of forgiveness, joy and peace. If we can see and acknowledge the damage that the former does in all instances, then we are left with no choice but to seek to worship the one who is the source of all life, the true object of our deepest desires, the one who loves us with an everlasting love, and who knows that worshipping Him is actually for our eternal good and benefit. Revd Andy Grant

Stepping Stones May’s Stepping Stones had Noah’s Ark as the theme. The children made masks of their favourite animals, and listened to a story about Noah and his Ark. It was great to see a sea of realistic animal faces, and the children all joined in with superb animal noises when asked what sound a certain animal made. We were joined by Mary from London who was a bridesmaid at a wedding in the church the following Saturday. At the end of the activities and story, we all vacated the church so the dress rehearsal for the wedding could take place. The children all assembled in the church yard and enjoyed some delicious brownies baked by Helen. The family service provided a perfect platform for the children to show their masks and read their prayers. Every child was asked about their favourite things and this was included in the prayers by way of thanking God for his gift of their favourite things. Every month we are seeing more new faces, it is great to see the children really enjoying the start to their weekend. The adults have a good time sometimes taking part in the activities or just having a catch up over a cup of tea. It doesn’t matter if you have a religious background or not, or whether you attend any church, Stepping Stones is open to all. June Stepping Stones is taking place at All Saints at 5.30 Friday 6th June, we are going to decorate our scarecrow entry for the forthcoming Bramham Scarecrow trail. All Saints Church has served Bramham’s Community since the 12th century, and is here for the village and its villagers. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk.

7 EASTER DAY EARLY MORNING VIGIL By Kate Lofthouse Following excellent sales pitches by both Revd. Andy and Trish on Good Friday morning, Isabella was determined that we should get up and go as a family to the sunrise Vigil at St Mary’s on Easter morning…. The reality of getting up at 4.30am for a 5.15am service brought an unexpected sense of adventure and excitement to our household! When Matthew woke Max up he said ‘awesome’ and jumped out of bed!! We all crept out of the house, it felt like it was still the middle of the night! The inside of St. Mary’s church was also in darkness, except for a reading light over the lectern. The chairs were set out on either side of the altar but it was difficult to make out who else was there, which all added to the mystery as we waited in anticipation of what would happen next. Father Peter, Trish and Revd. Andy all came in and Father Peter opened the service with the aid of a reading light over his prayer book. The first reading was the seven days of creation, the moving from darkness into light was carefully timed as I noticed it was starting to get light outside too. We listened with intent to the ancient scriptures which captured my imagination and seemed to me like I was hearing it all for the very first time! The next step of our journey was to pick up a candle and go outside into the churchyard. In the stillness of the dawn I was mindful of the beauty of our earth, the trees, the blossom, the spring flowers, the birds. A small fire had been lit on a stand and we all formed a circle around it. Father Peter asked us to take a moment to listen to the birdsong – what a beautiful and poignant moment. Even though I listen to the birds very often that particular moment will stick in my mind for a very long time. I also had a quick look around the circle to see who we were sharing this experience with! There were some familiar
faces but there were also faces I had never seen before. I felt very honored to be there with 24 other like-minded people all on the same path but each of us on our own very individual spiritual journeys. It was lovely to have Isabella and Max with us too as it brought in the added element of the acceptance of bringing together people of all ages. My mind was then refocused as the ceremony of the Paschal Candle began. This was fascinating to watch, I remember thinking that this ritual would be being performed up and down the country and across the world. Then the candle was lit by the fire, after which all our candles and later the candles in church were also lit. After prayers Andy carried the Paschal candle and lead us all back up the path with our lit candles, stopping at intervals to sing 'Christ as our light’ to which we sang in response ‘Thanks be to God’. Max turned round with a concerned look on his face as his candle had blown out! However we were all struggling to keep them alight and as we turned the church corner a gust of wind blew all of them out, even Father Peter’s! We huddled at the back of the church to relight our candles and then continued down the aisle to our seats. It was very magical continuing the rest of the service by candlelight. Revd. Andy sang the Proclamation beautifully – not easy to have such a pure monk like voice with unwavering tone at that time in the morning! Trish then read the very moving reading about Mary going to the tomb and the heart stopping moment when she realises that Jesus is alive. Oh that reading always gets me but knowing that Max would be highly embarrassed at the emotion I was feeling I swallowed the lump in my throat as best I could and wondered what was going to happen next in the service. Gathered around the font, Father Peter gave us a good splashing but apparently we were lucky not to get a good soaking! We all shared the Peace, then back at our seats we listened to Father Peter’s sermon and embraced several times the response ‘He is risen indeed Alleluia’! During the Gloria there was a flurry of activity as all the altar candles were lit, the altar was redressed with the cloths and a white cloth was draped over the stark wooden cross and we sang with triumph and enthusiasm that Jesus is risen and alive. Max and Isabella were too embarrassed to ring the reindeer bell we that brought with us, so I clattered it during the chorus along with everyone else’s delicate little hand bells! It was now time for us to take communion (the only part of the service I was familiar with). Again, even though I regularly take communion this particular time was somehow different. It was like a new experience, a new beginning, a fresh start type of feeling, the 1st communion of our risen Lord.

The organ sounded wonderful, I don’t know if it was because I was sat directly opposite it and nearer the pipes than I would normally be, but I took a moment to admire the magnificent and majestic sound and the talents of Steve, especially at that time in the morning! The service came to an end, but it wasn’t over…. there was a fabulous breakfast awaiting us in St. Mary’s room!! We were treated to porridge, hot cross buns, pain au chocolate, tea, coffee and a wonderful selection of different juices. In conclusion I have to say I was wowed by it all! I thought it was fantastic and I was so pleased that we had gone. I am sure that part of the wow factor came from the fact that it was the first time we have ever gone to the service, but that certainly wouldn’t stop us from going again. It was also mentioned that there are going to be some changes made to the service for next year to include the Holy Mackerel group in the delivery of the service. So all that is left to say is that I hope I have enticed you to come along next year! Kate Lofthouse

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk
May 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents To all Bramham residents: Here is the update from our May Parish Council meeting, and latest developments: Parish Council Election: Three new councillors were elected 8 May. Stephen Kitchen, Ian Dalton, and John Dickson. The Parish Council will welcome them to the Council at the next meeting. Playing field and Pavilion: The Parish Council is pleased to advise that discussions are taking place with the BSLA with regards to the handover of the pavilion. Once the handover has taken place the council will endeavour to complete outstanding works and get the doors of the pavilion open as soon as possible. We very much want this to be an asset that will be used and enjoyed by the residents of Bramham as a changing room, meeting space and sports facility. We do have the funds available to complete the works outstanding but in order to ensure that the village can afford to maintain the pavilion long term we will need your help. We are bringing together a team of
Parish Council Finances and Solicitor Fees: The Parish Council’s obligation to ensure your precept monies are spent wisely is of paramount importance to us. That has been demonstrated with the exceptional report provided by our clerk at the recent Annual Parish Meeting, our recent clear internal audit, and the monthly reconciliations that have been put in place by our clerk. Well done and thank you to Marie. We were concerned to read a recent election leaflet that suggested we were wasting large sums of money on legal fees associated with the pavilion and playing field, and unnecessary use of a solicitor. We realise that conflicting information you see can seem like ‘tit for tat’ and we do want to avoid this, but feel it is vitally important to advise you all as residents and precept payers that the suggestion that we are spending large amounts on legal fees (possibly even the option monies) are 100% unfounded. Our solicitor is local to the village and when we approached him for some initial advice he discovered that the playing field lease arrangements put in place in 2008 were basically a mess and needed sorting out. Handing over the playing fields to the control of the BSLA or any other organisation without proper legal arrangements in place would have been irresponsible madness – certainly not common sense.
