Clergy Letter from The Rev. Canon Peter Bristow THE ACID TEST I’m writing this just four days away from the General Election. Whatever the makeup of our next government from a Christian perspective social justice must always be a central feature of government policy. There are several basic justice issues demanding our attention and that of any government worth its salt. I write about just three. A very big thank you to all those of you who are supporting the work of our local Food Bank. But why have Food Banks suddenly taken off on a scale which just ten years ago seemed inconceivable, with close to one million people accessing them? Since the recession that strata of society which is hungry and often also linked with homelessness has grown exponentially. In the last few years we have witnessed the emergence of a new class of really poor people who are crushed by low wages, a strict interpretation of the benefits system and high rents. We live comfortably in what the estate agents call ‘the golden triangle’, an area where we meet relatively few of such people on a day to day basis. Unless you have a job which brings you into contact with them they are largely invisible. But they are here. About three months ago I was asked to see a young man who is suffering from severe depression. His story is typical of many thousands of such young men. He left school at 16 and did several short term manual jobs, constantly moving on to find work. Sadly during the recession and now in his mid 20s, having established himself in an apprenticeship, he was made redundant when his firm went bankrupt.

He was searching for work and had been receiving the Jobseeker’s Allowance when he suddenly became homeless. The terms of the allowance specify what is expected for the benefit to be accessed. He had to provide “sufficient evidence” of his search for work. He did not own a computer and had to use one at his local library, which had restrictions on its usage and printing charges. This young man – certainly with a will to work and a track record of work – could not produce the required evidence to prove he had been making serious efforts to find work. His benefit was stopped and he was left with no money for rent or food. On becoming homeless he was caught shoplifting food on four occasions; this resulted in a short prison sentence. He appreciated the relative ‘security’ of prison, a warm cell, a bed and regular food. When I saw him he had left prison and was housed in temporary accommodation but with no longer term provision. The reform of the benefits system has produced many thousands of hard cases. Those who are disabled were originally badly affected by the “bedroom tax”. Many of them in our larger towns and cities had to move to far less suitable accommodation and to areas totally unknown to them before the policy was amended. There is considerable local opposition to new housing schemes for a wide variety of reasons, not least the question of sustainable infrastructure. This is both understandable and is an acceptable viewpoint. Continued on page 5

Continued from page 3

However, I have to ask, how do we, as Christians, move beyond these local concerns and actively respond to the enormous housing crisis we are currently facing? Successive governments have simply ignored the issue. Many of our young people of whom 800,000 are unemployed, cannot even contemplate the possibility of finding or still less acquiring their own home. There is something profoundly wrong with the system. Real and urgent reform is required. At the end of World War Two the Marshall plan successfully addressed the rebuilding of Europe. We now need a Marshall type strategy for housing, which is one of our most basic human rights. Immigration is another sensitive but important topic. A few months ago I recounted the story of meeting with a mother and daughter who are living in Leeds, refugees from Afghanistan having fled Taliban retribution., which was for me a truly humbling experience. We know that many of the asylum seekers and economic refugees from Africa are risking literally everything to flee from tyranny and appalling poverty. Those that manage to reach our shores are almost totally invisible and face years of indefinite detention in over crowded immigration centres. The United Kingdom

detains more people in its immigration centres than most other European countries. Unlike many of those countries in Britain there is no upper time limit on detention and just in 2014 some 30,365 people were detained. The boy Jesus was himself a refugee. How would we feel if having fled from conflict, violence, persecution and slavery, we had survived a very dangerous journey across the Sahara Desert, and then risked an even more perilous journey across the Mediterranean only to face long term detention in poor conditions ? We can’t solve all the world’s problems but we can shout from our housetops to the rest of the world and ensure that all who come to us with none of our world’s material blessings are treated with respect and decency. As disciples of Christ there are many basic justice issues demanding our attention and involvement. It has long been said by church leaders, historians and indeed by many politicians, that the acid test of any decent system of government is how it deals with the most vulnerable members of society. Whatever your politics, pray that our new government will take very seriously these issues of basic justice.

The Rev. Canon Peter Bristow, Vicar

GLENDA WEBB It was announced on Easter Sunday that Glenda Webb has been appointed by the Archbishop as the new curate of the Benefice of Brayton and she will serve her title in the Parishes of St. Wilfrid and St. Francis of Assisi with The Rev. Pete Watson. Glenda has served in many different capacities over 27 years, liturgically and pastorally, particularly at St. Mary’s; she was also Deanery Secretary and most recently our Parish Administrator for three years. During the last year Glenda has preached and served across all the churches of our parishes. A very big thank you to Glenda for her great contribution and for all that she has accomplished here. We offer her our congratulations and pray for God’s blessing on her new ministry and for all the Family. Glenda’s ordination to the Diaconate is on 5th July at York Minster and there is a list for a place on the coach at the back of church which needs to be signed as soon as possible. Following the ordination ceremony there will be a reception for Glenda in St. Mary’s Parish Room. Canon Peter

Stepping Stones May’s Stepping Stones was all about….playing games !! The children arrived, and organised themselves (with only a little help from the adults) into a group game of Twister. We followed this by having some games with the parachute… there was a red team and a green team, and the object of the game was to get the other teams coloured balls off the parachute. Kate Kennedy, the Youth Coordinator then spoke to the children about the Holiday Club held at St Mary’s and its theme this year of the South Pole. To give us a flavour of some of the games, we asked the children to make snow balls from newspaper. The snowballs were placed in the centre of the parachute, and the object of this game was to get as many snowballs in the opponents’ side (we divided the space in half -one side red, one side green). The children loved it!! After juice and biscuits we had a final game which involved knocking over a plastic bottle with a bean bag thrown from a distance… sort of a one-skittle game of skittles! Details of the Holiday Club will come out after half term, with sign up sheets going into school bookbags. The Dates this year are 27th-31st July. It really is an amazing week for the children, they have loads of fun and learn lots too! The children who attend Stepping Stones are mainly from Bramham, Boston Spa and Thorp Arch schools. We would like to welcome our two latest recruits, Tom and Tilly, they settled in really well and had a lovely time… as did their Daddy! Any child is welcome to attend whether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 5th June at All Saints Church - 5.30pm. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday at 10am. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. All Saints’ Church Bramham, serving Bramham’s Community for over 800 years.

17 OFFICIAL OPENING OF BRAMHAM PAVILION on Saturday 25th April 2015 After weeks of planning, the organisers of the official pavilion opening agreed that it was a resounding success with good support from the local community. Melvin Benn of Festival Republic made a flying visit to cut the ribbon, praised everyone behind the pavilion project and received a loud cheer from the crowd when he said he always appreciated a proper cup of tea on his visits to Yorkshire! The committee would like to thank Melvin for his support for taking time out to perform the opening duties during his very busy schedule. The afternoon saw several of our village groups and organisations providing the activities kicking off with a lively ‘Wake up and Shake up’ display by children from Bramham Primary school followed by a routine to music by ladies from the Fitness League led by Yvonne Gibson. Lots of activities were on offer on the playing field, too. A soccer skills demonstration by 5Star Sports; a treasure hunt organised by Stepping Stones, a fitness demonstration by Steve Haywood and the children’s cycle trial competition proved to be very popular. NSPCC ran a stall and the badminton club brought along their equipment for everyone to have a go. The event finished appropriately with our local football team taking on Kirk Deighton. No fund-raising event is complete without a raffle and everyone wanted to get their hands on the top prizes - tickets to Bramham Horse Trials; a pair of tickets for the Latitude Festival donated by Festival Republic; a signed Leeds Carnegie rugby shirt and ball – along with many other sought after items. Thanks to everyone who donated a prize and the committee would particularly like to thank everyone who contributed on the day. Hot dogs, bacon butties and drinks were served in the pavilion along with delicious cakes donated by Yorkshire Country Women’s Association. There were many favorable comments by people visiting the pavilion for the first time and a set of photographs of Bramham ‘then and now’ by local photographer, Katie Kitchen, created much conversation of times gone by. The pavilion and playing field are available for hire by contacting 07731 822562 for costs and more information can be found by following the link on: www.bramhamparishcouncil.org.uk Gerry Taylor

Parish Council Vacancies: There are 3 vacancies to be filled by co-option. Please see the separate ad in this magazine or contact the clerk or any councillor for information. Leeds Festival: The closing date has now passed and applications have been higher than the number of tickets available. You should by now have had your letters advising whether or not you have been successful. We will keep a waiting list for those who haven’t. Bramham Gala: We are lookingC forward as usual to a great Gala this year, and are pleased to again provide a grant to the Community Action Group (CAG) towards the costs. Everyone in the CAG is working hard to make it a super event. See you all there on June 20th! Pavilion Opening: A huge thank you to everyone involved in the official opening of the Pavilion on April 25th and to everyone who came along to make it such a special day. Senior Citizen’s Centre: The Centre has been refreshed with a new coat of paint and we are looking into replacing the carpet and curtains. Scarecrow Trail and Open Gardens: What a lovely day! Well done CAG, the NSPCC committee, and the Yorkshire Country Women's Association. Parking: We regularly hear from residents who live in some of the narrower streets in Bramham and have problems due to inconsiderate parking. Leeds City Council has advised that they consider that parking restrictions would cause problems for residents and that any parking restricting access is a police matter to be reported on phone number 101 or at www.westyorkshire.police.uk/leeds/outer-north-east. Better still, avoid the problem by considering your neighbours when parking. Continued on page 27

PARISH COUNCILLORS WANTED!! Do you care about what happens in Bramham? Can you give some of your time to work with a team of others who also care? If so – you can make a difference - read on! There are 3 vacancies on the Parish Council to be filled through a process of co-option. The process is that anyone interested should contact the PC Clerk by Wednesday 17th June. The Council will invite applicants to meet with them for an informal discussion on the evening of Wednesday 24th June and then make a decision about who to co-opt. (If you are interested but can’t make it on the 24th June, don’t be put off, we will arrange another date). The intention is for new councillors to be appointed in time for the Council meeting 1st July . Training will be available, this is a one evening session that we have all found very interesting. You can also contact any councillor for an informal chat about what is involved. 29 YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMENS ASSOCIATION The speaker at our April meeting was Mrs C Neuff whose talk entitled ‘Spinning Yarn’ covered both a history of the art of spinning and a demonstration of her skill with the spinning wheel. Members were impressed by the attractive items she had made over the years and appreciated greatly her donation of her speaker fee to the Martin House Hospice. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 17th June at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall, when the speaker will be Mrs Pat Osbourne on ‘The Secret Life of Agatha Christie’. She is a very popular speaker and visitors, as always, will be very welcome. Nine of our member recently attended the 32nd YCA Annual General Meeting at Askham Bryan College. After the formal part of the meeting Lucy Adlington from the History Wardrobe presented ‘Wish You Were Here’ showing a variety of bathing costumes from the 18th century to the present day.

Jean Dale FOLLY ALLOTMENTS, ABERFORD ROAD, BRAMHAM It is 18 months now since we first placed an article about these allotments in the ‘Parish News’ and a lot has happened since then. We have been successful in obtaining grants of funding from the Parish Council, from the Community Fund and from Red Hall Parks and Countryside Nursery, for all of which we are very grateful. As a result of this we have planted lots of bare-rooted shrubs in an attempt to restore the damaged hedges surrounding the site, we are currently replacing all of the (sometimes decrepit!) fencing to the main access path, we have provided and sponsored a planting box by our gate for ‘Bramham in Bloom’ and are now on the tour list for the village Open Gardens and Scarecrow Trail events. Even more importantly, we have not only let all of the allotments which were vacant at the time of the original article, we have also let all those allotments which have become available since that time as a result of natural ‘churn’, so we now have no less than 9 new plot holders! The result of this is that there is no-one on our waiting list at all. There are no allotments currently vacant but, as in any group of this nature, there is a natural cycle of ‘leavers/joiners’ as you can see from the above. So, any residents of Bramham over the age of 18 who wish to be considered for a plot when one becomes available should initially contact Paul Marshall (Secretary) by telephone (01937 844767) or by email at phmpm@sky.com. As before, allotments are always assigned on a first come/first served basis - when one becomes available the first person on the waiting list gets first ‘dibs’! As well as tending an allotment, which in itself is a very rewarding leisure activity with many benefits, you will be joining a vibrant community with a growing number of activities. So do come and join us!

Paul Marshall

HEALTHY EATING ADVICE COURTESY OF HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE. As we age, our digestive and immune systems become less efficient. It is important to eat well and nutritiously to get the most out of the food we eat. Healthy eating includes consuming high-quality proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in the foods you take in while minimizing processed foods, saturated fats and alcohol. Eating in this manner helps you maintain your body’s everyday functions, promotes optimal body weight and can assist in disease prevention. If you are not used to eating a healthy diet, making gradual changes can help you improve the way you eat in the long run. You can replace high-calorie, sugary drinks for water, for example, and switch from full-fat to low-fat dairy products. Select lean meats instead of fatty cuts and whole-wheat grains instead of refined grains. Snacking on fresh fruits and vegetables like carrots, apples and cucumber slices is healthier than snacking on crisps or chips. Here are the main reasons why healthy eating is important for each and every one of us. Improves Mood: Doing right by your body pays off for your mind as well. Eating a healthy diet as well as exercising help boost your confidence and self-esteem. Combats Diseases Healthy habits can help prevent certain health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure, by boosting high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol and decreasing unhealthy triglycerides. This combination keeps your blood flowing smoothly, decreasing your risk of cardiovascular diseases. Boosts Energy: We've all experienced the energy drop that comes from eating foods high in sugar and saturated fats. When you eat a balanced diet including whole grains, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, and fruits and vegetables, your body has the fuel that it needs to manage your energy levels. Improves Longevity: When you practice healthy habits, you boost your chances of a longer life. Controls Weight: Eating right and exercising regularly can help you avoid excess weight gain and maintain a healthy weight.

For further help and advice please contact Margaret Brennan, owner of local Wetherby-based at home care company Home Instead Senior Care. Email margaret.brennan@homeinstead.co.uk or call 01937 220510.

37 THE EASTER VIGIL At the time of reading this Easter will be long past; chocolate and hot cross buns consumed, birds will be nesting, the daffodils withered whilst the hedgerows and trees awaken and the days will be getting longer. . . . and still the Easter light burns. I am talking of the Paschal Candle which was lit on Easter morning just as dawn approached. We are told that the Easter Vigil is THE most important service in the Christian calendar . . . . but to some it might look like just another church service, odd with a few extras. I love this service and would like to share some of my thoughts about it. The group of 40 included people from all our churches. The Vigil began in a darkened church where we listened to readings from the Old Testament, this year accompanied by pictures, before going out into the churchyard where an Easter fire had been kindled. It wasn’t too chilly and sunrise was just beyond the horizon. The birds chirped and the grass smelled wonderfully damp beneath our feet. The Paschal candle was blessed and lit by The Rev Trish (note the symbolism - out of the darkness into the light). We all processed back up the churchyard to the beautiful sound of birdsong, the dawn chorus. Every few metres Canon Peter acclaimed ‘The Light of Christ’ raising the candle and we responded singing, ‘Thanks be to God’, all the way back into church. We took our seats and in fading darkness Peter sang the ancient proclamation of Easter, The Exultet, at the end of which the organ played a fanfare accompanied by our ringing, clanking and tinkling bells. The Paschal candle was placed near the lectern, where it will stay during the Easter season. It will also be used throughout the year at baptisms and funerals, reminding us of the light of Christ in our lives. The service continued with a powerful address by Trish who illustrated the significance of the resurrection in our lives today. This was followed by the blessing of the baptismal water at the font, the renewal of our baptismal vows, the peace and Holy Communion, lots of joyous singing and alleluia’s. All capped off with breakfast in St Mary’s room. We’ve been preparing for Easter through the 40 days of Lent culminating in the services of Easter: Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil on Easter Sunday before sunrise. I found myself reflecting on what it all meant for me. This service is rich in symbolism, most of which I don’t understand but I do however, feel a part of the richness of the celebration of this ancient ritual. I do understand moving from darkness to light is symbolic of moving from death to life, life in Christ. This celebration, vigil, is an invitation to reflect on God’s action and our response. It is important to Christians because it doesn’t just commemorate something God did in the past; it celebrates something God is doing today; we are watching and waiting to see what God is doing in our lives today. Continued on page 38

38 Easter Vigil continued from Page 37

Because our past and our future are connected through our belief in and love for God, it wouldn’t be enough for us to simply sit in the pews as we do on any regular Sunday. The emphasis is on waiting, waiting for the ending of the story, Christ’s resurrection. So all the waiting, the reflection, the readings, fires, music, singing and candles remind us that God has accomplished something amazing by loving us so much, and for me the Easter Vigil is an opportunity to hear and follow the invitation from God to accept the grace He gives, that I am ready to be renewed. If you’ve never experienced the Easter Vigil I would recommend you give it a go despite the early hour! At every Eucharistic service the celebrant says, ‘The Lord is here’ and we respond, ‘His Spirit is with us’, I wonder do we really live in that belief. Alleluia, Christ is risen. He is risen indeed, Alleluia.

HARVEST FESTIVAL WEEKEND Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th October Plans are moving ahead for this year’s Harvest Festival and we have all sorts of activities planned for you. There will be exhibitions and displays connected with Harvest, competitions for children - do join in. One of the competitions will be for home made bread. Calling all bread makers!

Can you make a small loaf of bread to bring to the “Bread Table” on the Saturday in the Village Hall? A suitable prize for the best entry - the Judge’s decision is final. The idea is to celebrate Harvest and after the Harvest Festival on Sunday 11th October, the children from Stepping Stones will assemble decorated shoe boxes and fill them with lovely items which they then deliver to Senior Citizens in the village. If you agree could we include your small loaf of bread?

The children like to include useful items in the box, something suitable for one person and a small loaf or a couple of bread rolls would be a perfect addition to box. The Church is often full of the most amazing items which the Bramham gardeners have grown, and we distribute these gifts in the boxes. Although the largest white cabbage in the district is perfect for display in church, an elderly gentleman living alone in Bramham would wonder what to do with this show stopping specimen!!! Keep an eye out for further details about the Harvest Weekend. We hope all the organisations in the Village will be able to take part and celebrate another bountiful year in the Bramham gardens and allotments. PLEASE LOOK AFTER YOUR SCARECROWS If you have made a scarecrow for the NSPCC Open Gardens please save it for the Harvest Weekend it would be lovely to see them again and they fit in so well with the theme of Harvest.

39 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Report from the AGM The Village Hall cottage became vacant about four years ago but it was in a poor state of repair and not suitable for renting out at that time. It became a storage area. After the work on the kitchen and toilets had been completed in the hall, the cottage became our priority. In conjunction with Bramham Park Estate, the cottage roof and the roof on the adjoining cottage (which belongs to the estate), was replaced. We fully funded the roof replacement for Cosy Cottage from our fund raising events. This meant that work could begin on the interior. Much of the initial work was completed by members of the village hall committee. This involved a considerable amount of hard work, giving up many weekends, evenings and holidays to strip it back to bare stone walls. A local architect provided us with a plan, free of charge, to utilise the existing living space to maximum effect, creating a three bedroom house with all the facilities that would be required in modern day living. It required complete rewiring and re-plumbing for it to be certified and brought up to British standards. We were extremely grateful to the Parish Council for allocating funding for the cottage building project. Due diligence was applied and a builder was appointed to carry out the work on the cottage. As with many works of this kind, in buildings of this type, there was project creep, as unexpected issues arose and the building work on the cottage was finally concluded in February 2015. Members of the village hall committee cleaned the property, decorated it, arranged for carpets and flooring to be fitted. The garden was tidied, blinds and lights were fitted. We appointed a management agent to run the property and it was let within days. The cottage is now providing an income stream for the village hall and the continued upkeep and maintenance of the cottage. We are now much more selfsufficient. The major project for 2014 for the hall was the roof replacement – the original pitched roof was a post war construction with no insulation. We applied for grant from an external organisation, Grantscape, and together with the donation from the Parish Council and our own fundraising, the flat and pitched roofs were replaced in summer 2014. The roof is now insulated. There is no lead flashing as an alternative material has been used that has removed the likelihood of damage being done from theft of lead. Exterior lighting has been installed outside the supper room and there is improved lighting to the car park. The next phase will be to improve access down the side of the village hall and through the fire door into the supper room. A number of our users have asked if this can be done. This project will be completed in summer 2015. A new extractor fan has been put in the kitchen and air bricks will also be put in. This is to help with the damp. We purchased additional fridges for the bar to cater for the many functions that we now do. Future projects include Installation of ceiling fans to provide more efficient temperature regulation in the hall; a dishwasher, new cooker, stainless steel central island to replace the pool table, fridge freezer in the kitchen. We want to improve and increase storage and are in the very early stages of looking at what options are available. Continued on page 40

WETHERBY RUFC Wetherby Rugby Club have just completed the most amazing season remaining unbeaten throughout. They won Yorkshire 4 by 30 clear league points amassing 1275 points for with just 119 against, the best statistics throughout the game. To round off the season in style Wetherby beat Northallerton in the league above them to capture the Yorkshire Silver Trophy at Hull. Bramham has played a part in the success, Captain James Gibson and Vice Captain Barney Roberts were both originally from Bramham and former Captain Danny Warden re-joined the club during the season. In addition to the first team the Junior Section has also gone from strength to strength with 420 players registered starting with under 6’s to under 17’s and including a Ladies Section. The Under 17’s won the Northern Bowl for there age group and finished runners up in the National Final. Again Bramham is well represented throughout. Thought for the month Do not forget small kindnesses and do not remember small faults. Chinese Proverb

Explanation of the Greek Bailout !!! It is a slow day in a little Greek Village. The rain is beating down and the streets are deserted. Times are tough, everybody is in debt, and everybody lives on credit. On this particular day a rich German tourist is driving through the village, he stops at the local hotel and lays a €100 note on the desk, telling the hotel owner he wants to inspect the rooms upstairs in order to pick one to spend the night. The owner gives him some keys and as soon as the visitor has walked upstairs, the hotelier grabs the €100 note and runs next door to pay his debt to the butcher. The butcher takes the €100 note and runs down the street to repay his debt to the pig farmer. The pig farmer takes the €100 note and heads off to pay his bill at the Farmers’ Co-op who supplied him with feed and fuel. The guy at the Farmers' Co-op takes the €100 note and runs to pay his tab at the hotel. The hotel proprietor then places the €100 note back on the counter so the rich traveller will not suspect anything. At that moment the traveller comes down the stairs, picks up the €100 note, states that the rooms are not satisfactory, pockets the money, and leaves town. No one produced anything. No one earned anything but the whole village is now out of debt and looking to the future with a lot more optimism. And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, is how the bailout package works!
