Thought for the month A day of worry is more exhausting than a week of work. John Lubbock
A Smile for March There was a man who had been lost and walking in the desert for about 2 weeks. One hot day with no food and no water he sees the home of a missionary. Tired and weak, he crawls up to the house and collapses on the doorstep. The missionary finds him and nurses him back to health. When he felt better, the man asks the missionary for directions to the nearest town. On his way out of the backdoor, he sees this horse. He goes back and asks the missionary, "Could I borrow your horse and give it back when I reach the town?"
March 2015
The missionary says, "Yes you can, but there is a special thing about this horse. You have to say 'Thank God' to make it go and 'Amen' to make it stop." Not paying much attention, the man says, "Sure, ok, thank you" So he gets on the horse and says, "Thank God" and the horse starts walking. Then he says, "Thank God, thank God," and the horse starts trotting. Feeling really brave, the man says, "Thank God, thank God, thank God, thank God, thank God" and the horse just takes off. Pretty soon he sees this cliff coming up and he's doing everything he can to make the horse stop. "Whoa, stop, hold on!!!!" Finally he remembers, "Amen!!" The horse stops 4 inches from the cliff. Then the man leans back in the saddle and says, "Thank God." (I am sure you know what happened next!)

3 BRAMHAM CHURCH YARD
Now that our thoughts are turning to spring it is time to remind everyone that the Churchyard will be brought back into shape. During the second week in March all the Christmas season wreaths and flowers will be cleared away and any very tired flowers removed. If any parishioners wish to keep safe some decorations please remove them before then. If you have any worries about what is allowed in the way of decorations in the churchyard please consult the leaflet which has been distributed throughout the village and can be found on the Bramham website. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who helped over the busy Christmas season to raise money for the church and ensure that the services were well supported. It is nice to know that All Saints has an important part to play in the village and is there for all. I would also like to thank Mike Corrigan for making a marvellous box in which to keep the Bramham Record safe for years to come; all on the VCC are very grateful and lucky to have such skills available to us. EASTER LILIES Traditionally we place white lilies in Church in memory of departed loved ones. If you have a loved one you will be specially remembering this Easter, and would like to put a lily in church for them, please let Dolly Mullen have your donation by 28th March, if possible, so that the lilies can be ordered and be at their flowering best on Easter Sunday. As we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter, it is particularly appropriate that we remember our own departed loved ones - family members and friends. For your guidance, at the time of going to press, we think the cost of one stem of the longiflorum lily. which is the traditional flower of the resurrection, will be £3 per stem.

NEW YEAR NEW EXPERIENCES Sing and Perform The Best of Big Band and Swing”
At Bridgewater Hall Manchester Sunday 14th June ‘What a wonderful and uplifting experience it was to sing at Bridgewater Hall! The whole experience has changed my life, I am a happier person ` - Yvonne, Leeds Lynne from Bramham writes …
16 years ago I joined an exciting innovative national choir. Along with 300 other singers we began a journey which began at Leeds Town Hall and then took us to European capitals, America, Mediterranean cities with cruise companies and the most prestigious concert halls in England including The Royal Albert Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Sage in Newcastle. Our music is of a mixed genre, classical, sacred, show tunes, music from films, pop, Big Band and Swing. We have made the rafters ring in Cathedrals with recitals in St Peter’s Vatican City, La Sagrada Familia Barcelona, The Palace of Versailles, Ground Zero New York, St Paul’s London, Epcot Theatre Disneyworld, Hampton Court and this year in September we are singing at Blenheim Palace.
Rehearsals at St Margaret’s Church Parish Centre, Horsforth, Leeds LS18 5LA begin on Tuesday 17th March at 7.30pm Full Details on website www.unlimitedvoices.uk tel no. 01609 889005 Opportunities have opened up new lives for many singers as they form new friendships, improve their wellbeing, sing with like minded people who love singing and having fun! Wonderful camaraderie in a very family atmosphere! Rehearsals are taken by professional vocal coaches. Our charismatic Musical Director Steven Roberts will conduct the choir along with the Northern Festival Orchestra. PLEASE COME AND JOIN US AND DISCOVER YOUR NEW INNER SELF!!

7 LENT LECTURES 2015 Wherever we are on our spiritual journey, indeed life’s journey, the season of Lent is an opportunity for growth - an opportunity perhaps to do things differently and give oneself a chance to refresh one’s understanding and gain new insights. To enable this, our parish has a tradition of commissioning a programme of Lent Lectures and this year Churches Together has invited Martin Nathanael to talk about the Elements of Mystical Christianity on Tuesday evenings, starting on February 24th in St. Mary’s Room at 7.30pm. (See poster opposite). Martin is a retired C of E Priest living in York who now teaches, writes and runs retreats and seminars. He is also an interfaith minister. His teaching spans a range of understanding of spiritual practice, including some aspects which have been lost in the Western Church today. I have attended some of his study days and always found them stimulating and helpful. We are most fortunate that Martin is coming to Boston Spa, so whether you come to church or not, do come and take this opportunity to explore faith, maybe from a slightly different angle than you might expect................? BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Cosy Cottage Observant neighbours will have seen the “To Let” board outside Cosy Cottage on Low Way. The Cottage has been completely refurbished and will be available to rent as an unfurnished, three-bedroomed cottage via Thomlinsons. As most of the Committee members work full time and have no experience of letting property, a decision was made to put the rental in the hands of a local agent who will undertake all aspects of the letting on our behalf. After more than three years since the former caretakers retired and left the cottage, it is great to see what a transformation has taken place. Thanks to the Parish Council for their financial support, to the main contractor for his perseverance and to all those who have supported us and helped to get the cottage into the fantastic state it is today. Job done!!
However, there will also be live music for those with no interest in rugby. More to follow when plans are firmed up. 2015/16 events and bookings at the Hall We are already taking many bookings for parties and events throughout 2015 and into 2016. If you know that you are likely to want to use the hall for your event, especially at weekend for children’s parties or evening events – birthdays, weddings etc, please contact committee via the bookings email (bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com) or tel no. (07432 330972) where a committee member can assist in making the booking. If you haven’t been in the hall for years, we can arrange for you to visit the hall to consider the amenities it offers – including the fabulous toilets!!! And we are pleased that we have been able to retain the same hire charges for 2015 as have applied for the last few years. A plea for the return of items “borrowed” from the hall. During the last year several items from the kitchen have disappeared from cupboards. These include large glass jugs, small cut glass jugs and sugar bowls, large serving plates, cake stands, vases. It is quite possible that these have been taken accidentally by caterers or people assisting with catering at events. However, their removal means that current users can’t enjoy the same facilities. If you held an event at the hall in 2014 and you or your caterer accidentally took any items of crockery, cutlery, glassware etc, please can you return them? The hall is in use most evenings so if you prefer to return them anonymously you could leave them in the porch. Or you could phone a committee member who can collect them (three numbers below). The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. Firstly, we would like to thank St Peter’s Walton for letting us use their building to host the Christingle Service (1st February). It was a lovely service led by Cannon Peter (congratulations on your promotion) and Reverend Trish. The children from all the Churches took part with oranges, candles and sweets. It is always special when the candles are lit and the main lights are turned off. February’s Stepping Stones was about Valentine’s Day and Healing.

The children arrived, and it was still daylight (come on Spring; you can do it). At first they sat down in two age groups and had a go at crafting three dimensional hearts and decorating them with tissue paper, pens, and of course stickers (for the younger ones) and heart shaped bunting (for the older ones). The results were fantastic, a lot of thought went into the hearts, there are some good artists at Stepping Stones. Midway, we had a quick break for orange squash and Jaffa Cakes (whilst Mums and Dads had tea or coffee (again with a Jaffa Cake or two), then it was story time and we had the story of Jesus Healing the
Leper – followed by a quick quiz, which all the children had a go at. It was mentioned by the children that they would like a different story, so from now on we are going to ask children to write their favourite topic (maybe Mum or Dad can help the younger ones), and we will pick a topic at random for that week’s story. Please let us know what you think – it can be anything they like.

Leeds Local Plan site allocations Further to last month’s report, the City Council’s Executive Board has now confirmed the site allocations for future development, as part of its statutory Local Plan preparation. These will be worked up into draft proposals for formal public consultation after May 2015. At this stage, however, it is worth noting that the proposed large scale development in the green belt at Headley Fields, which has been promoted by Wetherby Ward Councillors and Alec Shelbrooke MP, is not included, but has been referred back for further review by officers, in conjunction with the development potential at Thorp Arch. Although most attention has, understandably, focussed on housing, it is pleasing also to note that the Freely Lane playing field is allocated as public open space, thus reinforcing the Parish Council’s commitment to its retention as a facility available to the whole community. The Neighbourhood Plan Group will continue is involvement in this process, in conjunction with the Parish Council, in order to maintain its objection to the development at Headley throughout the further Leeds Local Plan stages. Proposed 5 Mw solar farm Members of the Group attended the recent preliminary consultation event, held in the Village Hall, at which this proposal was displayed. It relates to some 27 acres of land adjacent to Headley Lane, which is currently part of Paradise Farm. It is understood that the scheme, which would feed directly into the National Grid and would have no direct links with the farm itself, will be the subject of a planning application to Leeds City Council in the near future. The Group will consider this proposal at its next meeting, so as to assist the Parish Council in responding to the anticipated planning application. Whilst the Group’s support for the principle of renewable energy is a matter of public record, the response to this proposal will need to consider the impact on the agricultural land on which the development would be sited and the wider implications for the farm holding, as well as the question of visual impact. Continued from page 11 The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. Any child is welcome to attend regardless of if they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 6th March at All Saints Church - 5.30pm – it will be a story about Mothering Sunday .
The Family Service the following Sunday was postponed because it was a group service at St Mary’s for confirmation of members of the congregation. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday at 10am. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. Advance notice, the Easter Stepping Stones will be on Thursday 2nd April (which is the day most schools close for the Easter break) when we will create an Easter Garden, and have an Easter Egg Hunt in the Church Yard. There is an indoor hunt planned should the weather be bad. All Saints Church Bramham, serving Bramham’s Community for over 860 years.

March 2015 Update ....communica ng with residents To all Bramham residents: Update from February Meeting The pavilion is now open for business! It’s fantastic to see the pavilion and playing field in use with Bramham Football Club (BFC) back home, Tadcaster’s Britannia team also signed up to play and “Five Star Sports” children’s football on Saturday mornings. A team of residents together with BFC Manager and Chairman, and parish councillors, has been set up to run the pavilion (more volunteers very welcome!). An official opening is planned for Saturday 25th April. See separate articles in this magazine for more information. New Playground: At the time of writing the new equipment has been installed and looks very exciting. The very wet and muddy weather has unfortunately meant that laying safety matting and the grassed area recovery has been delayed and mid March now looks a likely opening time. Check on the website to keep up to date with announcements. See photos on page 17 Leeds Festival: Ticket applications will open Monday 23rd March and close Thursday 16th April. Application forms will be available from the Village shop and on the website from the opening date. Criteria will be as in previous years, and again there will be a limited number of nominated tickets for non-residents. The price is £42 including the bus. Full details will be provided with the application forms.

MEMBERS OF BRAMHAM ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH REMEMBER WITH AFFECTION
LAURIE BAKER Laurie was a pillar of the Methodist Church in Bramham and a good neighbour to all. He performed many acts of kindness, visited the elderly and delivered this magazine for many years in his younger days, before handing over to John. His quiet dignity and modest selfeffacement were strong features of his faith. His last years were blighted by ill-health but he was lovingly cared for by his son, John, in his home in the village that he loved. Rev’d Stanley Menzies
