Clergy Letter from Revd Canon Peter Bristow

WHO ARE WE ? The sociologist, Professor Linda Woodhead of Lancaster University, has recently delivered a lecture based on her book That was the Church That Was arguing that the decline in religious membership in England has now reached a crucial tipping point, with more people claiming to have no religion than those who claim religious affiliation. Professor Woodhouse, and her co-author, Andrew Brown of the Guardian newspaper state that the primary cause lies in the gradual separation of the values of a secular society from those promoted by organised religion and in our context, especially Christianity. Dr. Andrew Atherstone, Latimer research fellow at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, takes issue with this analysis. He says that the evidence simply points to the fact that non-Christians are being more forthright about their identity, but the Church of England’s own research, published in January, still indicates 1.1 million people, or 2% of the population, are worshipping in the Church of England. The arguments will continue, as they always have done. Woodhouse states “the bar to entry has been raised progressively higher since the ‘90s: church members are now expected to believe things, experience things, give considerable sums of money, and even go out and evangelise others, encouraging them to become ‘disciples of Jesus.” Well, this has been the case since New Testament times ! However, we are very aware people are baptised for many different reasons – from because it is “the done thing” to having a profound conviction of it’s significance – but our presumption is

always that those who ask for baptism, especially for their children, are asking out of some kind of ‘faith’ conviction, no matter how frail. Our world always faces challenges and issues and is forever riddled with the gloom of evil, currently in the form of several wars across the Middle East with massive consequences for the European Community. Baptism claims that by our sharing in Christ’s victory over death, the particular evils of our times have ultimately been defeated. Through the pouring of water we enter into the waters of death so as to rise with the power of Jesus Christ. Our Christian faith will always face the challenges of the age, at the present time secularism, religious fundamentalism and persecution in many places, especially in the Middle East which was the cradle of Christianity. The ethical debates and arguments within the Church will always continue, but it is our Baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus which is key to who we are, to what we claim and to how we live. Baptism transforms one’s identity. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that many of the first Christians had to leave behind family and friends in order to practise their faith. Through Baptism we begin to share in the very life of God himself and whatever this life holds for us our faith tells us that through Baptism we will be drawn – through Jesus’ death and resurrection – to the face of God himself. One day heaven and earth will be renewed. Baptism is our guarantee that we will have a place in this new heaven and earth. Continued on page 5

This year Easter Sunday falls on 27th March. The dawn service of Easter Sunday, is the most important service in the Church’s calendar. Weather permitting, we will proclaim the risen life of Christ through the symbolic processing of the Easter Candle into church and this year there will be an adult baptism. . It is both a dramatic and special service and I ask you to consider attending it at St.

Mary’s at 5.30am. It celebrates the joy, freedom and hope of Baptism, that one day, because of what Jesus has done for us, we will be summoned to the glory of God, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard has God prepared for those who love him.” By the way, if you have one, please bring a small bell with you ! Use Lent to prepare for Easter. I wish you and yours a faith filled and blessed Easter. Canon Peter

THANK YOU I express my deepest thanks to the many individuals in our church communities and the wider community for your very kind letters, cards and support at the time of my Father’s death. I feel I have been away so long, having been in Ghana during the second half of November and then again, so unexpectedly over Christmas. Dad died on Boxing Day evening. I received many comments about the sadness of being at a death bed over Christmas celebrations. From a purely human perspective this is true, but it is also true that the sheer joy of the Christmas Feast is firmly based on Christ’s Easter Victory over death. While he lay dying my brother and sisters and I played Christmas carols in the background and it just seemed such an appropriate and natural thing to do. Due to my Father’s demise and passing I am conscious that I have hardly spoken of or written about my visit to Ghana. It was an amazing and wonderful experience and I will attempt to sort photographs with a view to giving some talks during the first half of this year. It was very hot, with the temperature reaching 40c during the day and remaining uncomfortably hot at night. Ghana is a place of great faith which humbled me on several occasions. I would like to thank those of you who have generously agreed to support the training of two clergy and will be writing to you to collect the 2015 contributions of £3,000 in the next month. I do hope that I can raise some interest in the wider community for fundraising for the Mampong Babies Home – in whose guest house I stayed for the duration of the visit – which houses and cares for some 40 orphaned children, a work which is undertaken by the Diocese of Mampong on behalf of the community at large.

Canon Peter

7 Love was in the air at Februarys Stepping Stones! The children did some beautiful Valentines inspired crafts…..stained glass windows, lollypop butterflies with heart shaped wings, valentines cards, heart shaped wreaths and twirly 3D hearts. Kate Kennedy (the Youth Coordinator for the churches) then took the children on a journey around the church talking to them about Lent, and involved the children by asking them to play different characters in the story of Jesus & the Devil. Some of the children talked about things they might be willing to give up for lent….broccoli & tomatoes were a couple of suggestions! There were lots of children at this session, including our youngest recruit who is 4 weeks old - we all enjoyed lots of cuddles! At the family service on Sunday, the children showed the congregation their creations and talked to Rev’d Trish about love and what it means. They also read the intercession prayers - its really lovely to see them read so confidently in church now.

Stepping Stones is open for any child to attend regardless if they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 11th March at All Saints Church - 5.30pm…. we will be preparing for the Easter Celebration Weekend. The Family Service takes place at All Saints every second Sunday (13th March) at 10am. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. PARISH COUNCILLORS WANTED!! Do you care about what happens in Bramham? Can you give some of your time to work with a team of others who also care? If so – you can make a difference - read on! There are TWO vacancies on the Parish Council. The amount of time you need to give is more than simply attending the monthly meeting, but doesn’t have to be too onerous when we have a full team. If you are interested please contact the clerk to the Council. Also you can talk to the Chairman or any councillor about what is involved. Applications (just an email or letter) need to be with the clerk by 3rd March 2016. An election is needed only if a minimum of 10 residents make a written request, by 3rd March 2016 to Leeds City Council for there to be one, and of course if there are more candidates than vacancies. If there is no election the vacancies will be filled through a process of cooption, where applicants are invited to an informal discussion with existing councillors. This will be during the week commencing 20th March. If you are interested but can’t make the date we will try to arrange an alternative. The intention is for new councillors to be appointed in time for the Council meeting 6th April. Training will be available, this is a one evening session that we have all found very interesting. There is also other optional training for specific areas of Council business. The next meeting will be on Wednesday 16th March at 7.15 pm in the Village Hall This is our Annual General Meeting and members’ attendance will be much appreciated. As usual we will be offering homemade refreshments.! Jean Dale

Just to remind you that the clocks go forward one hour on Sunday 27th March at 2.00am meaning British Summer Time has officially arrived and we lose one hour’s sleep!

BRAMHAM FOOTBALL CLUB It`s been a bit of a struggle for the Club over the last few months, the wet weather has had a disastrous effect with the Clubs 3 teams , as barely any football has been played since November. The Saturday team are trying to introduce a lot of new local players , and currently sit 3rd in Harrogate League Division 1. The Sunday 1st and 2nd teams both sit top of their respective divisions , so hopefully the clubs can maintain their challenge to win their respective leagues. I will try keep you all up to date via the Bramham Facebook page, or alternatively you can follow the football club on twitter. Yours in sport. Dave

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN BRAMHAM’S FASCINATING PAST? WE NEED YOUR IDEAS! The diocese of York in partnership with York Archaeological trust is inviting churches to take part in the JORVIK Group’s programme of medieval summer events in 2016. Events can take any form and involve any part of the village not just the Church We plan to stage an event of some kind in August this year If you have any ideas/ information about how we can bring Bramham’s medieval past to a wider public, please get in touch

BRAMHAM CHURCHYARD We feel that there has been a marked improvement and we hope to continue to keep the area under continuous mowing. This should keep the whole Churchyard tidier for everybody to enjoy. We have been greatly impressed by your efforts to keep the graves well tended and supplied with flowers and thank you for this work, which we all know takes time out of busy schedules. By the Diocesan Churchyard Regulations we are allowed to leave Christmas wreaths in place for two months and are then supposed to clear them away. This is also desirable as many of them have wire frames which will damage the mowers and strimmers. We will therefore have a clearing session on Saturday 5th March and would ask anyone who has decorations/flowers which they wish to keep to take them away before then. We have no wish to cause any of you distress in this matter. Please be aware that we are bound by regulations from the Diocese of York and that if you have any queries about what is allowed to be put on the graves or Ashes Garth please do not hesitate to contact us. Finally if there are any villagers who have the time and energy to help maintain the Saxon Graveyard of Bramham please contact the Churchwardens and we will happily use your enthusiasm to the benefit of the village. It may be more satisfying and certainly cheaper than going to the gym! Chips Browning Churchwarden

“Easter Egg-sellent Food Facts” The exchange of eggs for Easter dates back to a springtime custom older than Easter itself in which eggs were given as a symbol of rebirth in many cultures. In the old days pretzels were associated with Easter because the twists of the pretzel were thought to resemble arms crossing in prayer. Eggs are associated with Easter because they represent the symbol of new life along with chicks which represent new beginning and rabbits which represent fertility. It's thought that eggs have been given as a gift to celebrate the spring for more than 2,000 years.

37 The conflict in Syria has given rise to perhaps the most severe humanitarian crisis since the Second World War and it is likely to worsen with displacement continuing within Syria and throughout the region. Two local Bramham residents, Dr Tim Ubhi & Mr Robert Greenacre have recently been working in Greece as part of the children’s e-hospital refugee aid programme, providing humanitarian and medical aid to the refugees. Their work has been the subject of a BBC inside-out documentary that was recently broadcast. The project has grown over the past 6 months and there are currently over 90 volunteers who are involved in the work that the children’s e-hospital is coordinating. The humanitarian work involves providing food, water, accommodation and clothing for the refugees with particular emphasis on the needs of the children. The medical work is centred around the use of on-line video technology to provide on-line paediatric consultations and paediatric support to medical teams on the ground in Greece. This service is also being developed for use in the UK to link parents with specialist paediatric advice on-line. Additionally, the team are fund-raising to establish a pop-up children’s hospital that can be deployed in disaster zones to provide medical care for children and also act as a platform for the child refugee immunisation programme. In addition to the humanitarian and medical work, the children’s e-hospital is also campaigning for the rights of the children in this arena. Thousands of children have gone missing and we urgently need to address the potential issues of trafficking and child abuse. Sadly, despite the campaign by save the children, our government has so far refused entry to orphaned refugee children who are at risk. The team are constantly in need of more volunteers and donations. If you would like to know more please go to the main e-hospital web-site (www.e-hospital.co.uk) and search under “refugee”. Alternatively please email any questions that you may have to admin@e-hospital.co.uk .

BRAMHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN GROUP Leeds City Council is still working on the formulation of proposed allocations to meet the levels of development required in its Core Strategy. As you will have read in the press, the Council is re-thinking its proposals for the Outer North East Area by following Leeds University’s decision to withdraw its site at Headley from any development proposals and continue here with agricultural research. This decision by the University was announced very late in the Council’s Local Plan process, so late in fact that the Plan still includes Headley in this exercise as a potential site, even though the site owner has withdrawn from the process and the site is no longer available. There is, therefore, still concern that there will be pressure on the University to change their minds, but we are now optimistic that the threat of a new town so near to Bramham has receded and the planners are reviewing alternative proposals. As a result, this Group is now able to resume its formal role in developing a Neighbourhood Plan on behalf of the Parish Council, work that has been put on hold for the last 18 months or so as the Headley proposals would have had significant implications for the Parish. So, in order to ensure we are up to date with village views, we will shortly be issuing a questionnaire to every household in the village as every resident in the village can contribute to the Plan with their views on the Parish now and in the future. We must remember that the Neighbourhood Plan will apply to the whole of the Neighbourhood, which is defined as the area within the Parish boundaries, not just Bramham village. Full details will be included in the questionnaire but it is anticipated that completed forms can be returned to the Post Office. We hopefully to be able to deliver the questionnaires sometime during March for return before the end of April. Any updates will be reported in this magazine in the coming months. Paul Marshall, Chair, Neighbourhood Plan Group

EASTER LILIES Traditionally we place white lilies in Church in memory of departed loved ones. If you have a loved one who you will be especially remembering this Easter, and would like to put a lily in church for them, please let Dolly Mullen have your donation by 13th March, if possible, so that the lilies can be ordered and be at their flowering best on Easter Sunday. As we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus at Easter, it is particularly appropriate that we remember our own departed loved ones - family members and friends. For your guidance, at the time of going to press, we think the cost of one long stemmed longiflorum lily (which is the traditional flower of the resurrection) will be ÂŁ3 per stem.

LEGION HELPS DEMENTIA SUFFERERS The RBL is to build more specialist care homes for those with dementia. There are already four specialist homes and the aim is to build more using the Butterfly Household Model of Care. Put simply this is a method of giving patients a role in the home whenever possible based on their memories of happier times from their earlier life.

Thought for the month The secret of getting ahead is getting started. Mark Twain

A Smile for March An small private plane circulating the Pacific Ocean was about to crash; there were five passengers on board, but only four parachutes. The first passenger said, "I am President Obama, the world needs me. The world wouldn’t want me to die” So he took the first parachute and jumped from the plane. The second passenger said “I am a senator and a decorated War Hero from an elite Navy Unit in the United States of America” so he grabbed the second pack and also jumped. The third passenger, Julia Gillard, said, "I am a former Prime Minister of Australia and I am the smartest woman in Australian history, so Australia's people don't want me to die." She took the third parachute and jumped out of the plane. The fourth passenger, Bill Graham said to the fifth passenger, a fifteen year old Boy Scout. “I have lived a full life and served my God the best I could, I will sacrifice my life and let you have the last parachute.” The young boy said, "Thank you Mr Graham, what a great person you are, but its OK, there's a parachute left for both of us, the Australia's smartest woman grabbed my schoolbag."
