Clergy Letter from Rev’d Stanley Menzies The United Nations Panel on Climate Change has recently issued its latest report and it makes sober reading. It suggests that the changes are severe, pervasive and irreversible. Extreme weather from heat waves to floods would increase the threat of disease, ruin food stocks, drive millions of people into poverty and could lead to conflict. All creation faces a difficult future, ecosystems are changing, deserts are growing and millions of peoples are on the move as they seek food, shelter and hope. But it is not only climate change that suggests an uncertain future. There are social, economic and political issues that must be resolved. The gap between rich and poor both within and between nations is growing unjustly. Community and neighbourliness are no longer valued. The institutions of state and church are no longer esteemed. We do live in fearful times and the essential concerns of the 21st century are challenging but they require a response that is thorough, consensual and wise. It also requires change in ourselves, in our institutions and nations so that we do seek the healing of creation and the commonweal of people. This change begins with the conscious decision to value creation, community and justice. The Integrity of Creation. The book of Genesis provides a dramatic and poetic description of the Creation story but it also insists on the integrity of creation and the essential connectedness of every living thing. And God saw that it was good. The great 20th century Celt,

George MacLeod insisted that what we do to matter is a spiritual issue, whether that be the matter of our human bodies, the matter of the body of creation, or the matter of the body politic and how we treat the resources of the earth. All these matters are spiritual and this Celt insisted that you can only find God in the Now. Look around you and see the glory and the wonder of creation, consider all the flowers, trees and land, sea and air that stir your soul. How much or how little do we value creation? There is far too much pollution, careless disposal of items we have no more use for and cruel indifference to living creatures and to the good earth. There is perhaps too much emphasis on material comfort rather than looking for the angel inside the matter of the body of creation. Look again at our children our families, our neighbours, the poor and the lost and see them as children of God. Think of politicians, leaders and decision-makers and pray that they may be wise, just and compassionate. David King, the former chief Scientific Adviser wrote a letter to his fifteen monthold grandson, a thinking, chuckling optimist who sees the world as a place to explore and learn. “There is much work still to do to secure a future for you and your unborn brothers, sisters or cousins. Will you have a life worth living as the 22nd century dawns? To achieve that my generation must find a way to value wellbeing over wealth and common good over personal greed. We must respect and value creation. Community There has been a seismic shift in our understanding of community. Continued on page 5

The family structure is undergoing significant change and there is a huge increase in single-person households. Many travel long distances to find employment or the nature of their work requires longer absences from their home. We don’t see our neighbours on a daily basis and there are an increasing number of lonely people. At the same time there are organisations, groups and individuals who work hard, imaginatively and tirelessly to support the idea of community They have understood as we need to realise that our common life is about sharing and that interaction with our neighbours needs to be intentional. We must not lose our confidence and will to make and sustain relationships. Jesus was asked who my neighbour is and He told the story of the Good Samaritan and the

wounded man on the road. Go and do what the Samaritan did, look for and be for others. Then you value community and blessing and joy will be shared. Justice We pray for justice and peace in a world that experiences lack of both. There are too many places where our fellow human beings, children of God are poor, homeless, hungry and victims of war. They are not treated with respect, they are not valued. The prophet Micah asked ” What does the Lord require of us? To do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God.” Justice comes first and maybe then we act kindly and walk humbly or as one version puts it walk wisely. May this be the beginning of wisdom as we do put justice first. Stanley

FRAUD PROTECTION IN OUR COMMUNITY… Many people save for decades to ensure they have financial security in retirement. That security can be threatened or eliminated virtually overnight if an individual becomes the victim of a financial fraud. Fuelled by the internet, the incidence of financial fraud is unfortunately on the increase. Elderly people are often targets, as scammers tailor their pitches in an attempt to steal their money, identity or property. As our ability to make effective financial decisions often declines with age, criminals worldwide are hunting down the most fragile members of our society by "working" from mailing lists which categorise people as being elderly or vulnerable in some way. Everyone is at risk but those living alone and with fewer means of being educated about scams or how to report them are their preferred targets. They contact them by letter, telephone and in person in an attempt to try to trick them into parting with cash. Home Instead Senior Care, Wetherby and North Leeds, a specialist home care service have partnered with Think Jessica, a registered charity, committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our society from such illegal practices. The Think Jessica campaign was started by Jessica’s daughter, Marilyn Baldwin, whose mother had suffered for several years at the hands of fraudsters, parting with thousands of pounds. Margaret Brennan, Director of Home Instead Senior Care is organising a programme of fraud awareness sessions over the next few months and has a free information and advice leaflet about postal scams and criminal phone calls. For further information or to request a leaflet please contact 01937 220510, email margaret.brennan@homeinstead.co.uk or visit www.homeinstead.co.uk/wetherby

7 BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets at the Leeds Festival together with any other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £230,000. Many people will be aware that this year’s meeting of the Community Fund Committee was deferred because of potential duplication of applications with those of the scheme being promoted by the Parish Council. It is understood that the Council will decide on its grants at the end of May. As soon as this is done, the Community Fund will accept applications during the following three weeks. New applicants should follow the procedure outlined below. Organisations who applied in November only need to indicate that their application still stands – there is no need to send any back up information unless circumstances have changed. To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, LS23 6RS (or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk) saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox will then meet to consider the applications. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to new projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. Colin Pool

9 IS THE BSLA A PRIVATE COMPANY WITH THREE DIRECTORS OR IS IT A CHARITY? Many in the village believe that BSLA is only a profit making company with shareholders. This is simply not true. Under the original BSLA constitution, the governance of the unincorporated association was such that all residents could potentially be held liable for the organisation’s debts because all residents of Bramham were members. Had the Association continued as a sports committee, with a very low turnover with few assets, running events or hiring out the playing field, the risk could have remained within the capability of the governance of a community group of this nature. As the main objective of the Council in 2008 was to set up the BSLA to raise funds to build a pavilion and manage it, the risks increased considerably with the requirement to handle building contracts totalling over £300,000. In 2011, the BSLA committee took advice from Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL) (http://preview.val.org.uk/) and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), as to the best management structure to put in place to build, manage and run the pavilion (and playing fields) on behalf of the Council, as landlord. The Council required the BSLA to become a registered charity, which would attract tax benefits and funds from those charitable trusts that only offer money to registered charities who are under the greater rigour imposed by the Charity Commission. However, the risks would still remain. Working with VAL, a project plan was developed to wind up the original unincorporated community group and transform BSLA to a charitable company with three Trustees who are also Directors. A specialist charity law firm in Leeds, very kindly worked with the BSLA, at no cost, to set up the charitable company, which is registered as a charity with the Charity Commission and as a not for profit company limited by guarantee with Companies House to mitigate the risks; there are NO shareholders. By setting up the BSLA as Charity, the intention as with most charities, is to deliver its services and facilities to as wide an audience as possible, within its remit, while also recognising that these are public facilities, which everyone should enjoy. The aims are: 1) To maintain, improve, provide facilities for sport, recreation or other physical activity or other leisure time occupation for anyone in need of such facilities or services; continued on page 11

Promoting community participation in healthy recreation Providing sports facilities accessible across the area Promoting health by involving physical / mental skills Promoting amateur sports

Quite simply, the BSLA was set up to do good in the village and from there to reach those interested and in need of such facilities in a safe and secure way as possible; it was never intended to be a profit making private company. The new structure is there to protect Bramham residents and Trustees of BSLA from financial risks and public liability arising from the pavilion. The funds attracted have given the village a wonderful asset, which when completed, provides another venue for the local community to meet and one that gives the opportunity for all residents to gain benefit. Of course, if the Council takes possession of the pavilion, the risk and liability reverts to all precept payers. Moira Pool and Alan Jones

April 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents: Here is the update from our April Parish Council meeting, Annual Parish Meeting, and latest developments: Annual Parish Meeting: The APM took place 9th April. Thank you to Becky Jackson and Sgt Ian McKelvey from the police, Stanley Menzies from All Saints Church, Ernest Nichols from Bramham in Bloom, Stewart Gibson from the Village Hall Committee, and Keith Innocent from the Community Action Group for their agenda items. All of these together celebrated the fantastic community we have in Bramham. And thank you to all of those residents who attended. The Chairman’s report is printed separately in this magazine and all information from the meeting is available on the website. Parish Council vacancies and election: Last month we reported that the election (to fill 3 vacancies) was expected to be 22nd May to coincide with local and European elections and therefore reduce costs from around £6,000 to £2,000. An error on the part of Leeds city Council (I am pleased to say not us!) has meant that the election has had to come forward to the 8th of May. However, because LCC made the mistake they will still charge us just £2000. The election will be held in the Village Hall. World War 1 commemorative bench: After research by Cllr Fiona Henderson we have purchased a WW1 commemorative bench as part of Bramham’s WW1 centenary commemoration. It’s a beautiful piece of village furniture and will be sited outside the Senior Citizens’ Centre. Do go along and have a look. Thank you Fiona.

Playing field and Pavilion: The Parish Council is preparing to complete and open the pavilion and works will commence at the end of May when notice to the BSLA expires (or sooner if the BSLA accepts notice given before then). We have consulted with organisations who gave grants towards the pavilion to ensure that the Parish Council taking over, to run the pavilion as a village asset, does not present any problems. We have also talked to Bramham Football Club who are keen to get back to playing in Bramham and are interested in acting as caretakers of the pavilion and prepared to do some fund raising for its maintenance. We will need your help! If you are interested in helping the parish council run the pavilion and playing field, or might consider using the facilities, or have any ideas about putting it to good use or helping fund raise to maintain the pavilion please do get in touch. Option monies grants: The closing date for applications for grants from the option monies has now passed. We will be meeting to consider applications and plan to make decisions by the end of May. There will be more funding rounds so if you have any ideas start preparing for a bid. Playground: We have applied for a grant for half of the costs of replacing the playground and will know if we have been successful by the end of May. Four very interesting tenders have been obtained, so fingers crossed for an exciting project. Lease costs: A resident asked about the legal fees incurred by the PC in drawing up the lease which was offered to the BSLA and why the appointment of the solicitor had not been tendered. There is a precedent in that between the period 2007/8 and 2010/11, the Parish Council spent £6625 on design and other professional fees associated with the Pavilion. This was not put out to tender. We took advice from The Yorkshire Local Council Association and they confirmed that there is no requirement to tender for professional services. However, even if there had been such a requirement, given that our solicitors have done all of the work other than the actual drawing up of a lease, for free, as a contribution to the village, we are very unlikely to have got a better value tender. Next Meeting: Wednesday 7 May, 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk.

17 BRAMHAM ANNUAL PARISH MEETING 9TH APRIL 2014 - CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Councillor resignations – Cllrs Lee Blanchard, Tony Silverwood and Martin Batt have recently resigned. All have significant other commitments and felt unable to give the time needed to the Parish Council. On behalf of the Council I thank them all for the work they have done whilst on the Council and wish them well for the future. I also thank them for their offers of future help to the Council. 12 residents requested an election to fill the vacancies, rather than the Council co-opting, so if there are more candidates than places we have an election coming up. We did originally plan the election for May 22nd to fit with local & Euro elections as this saves costs. However due to an error by LCC in the election timetable this has had to be changed to May 8 and nominations have closed. As the error was LCC’s rather than ours they have agreed to still only charge us the reduced amount that we would have paid had the election been on May 22nd (roughly £2,000 rather than £6,000). We look forward to some new councillors to share the workload, and dedicate some time and effort. Being a councillor does mean more than just attending a meeting once a month, but it doesn’t have to be too onerous, especially if we have a full Council of people to contribute. Everyday business -The year has passed quickly and as usual there has been a great deal of day to day business, a few examples are: We have: • In the face of LCC refusing to set lower speed limits Cllrs Innocent & Mackie worked with the police on a speed awareness day and we are going to be working with the school on further awareness days. • Done much work with pot holes and road resurfacing within the village and this will continue to be a priority for the council, especially Bowcliffe Road that is scheduled for next year. We very much appreciate residents telling us about these issues so that we can take action • Publicised the Superfast Broadband exercise and encouraged residents to register. One resident, Lisa Robinson, has also put in a great deal of effort with posters and leaflets, so thank you very much to Lisa for doing this. • Got LCC to put in a dropped kerb at Tenter Hill / Bowcliffe Road to help a resident who uses a mobility scooter. • Liaised with Yorkshire Water to make residents aware of drainage problems on Croft Drive. • Secured additional litter bins by the recycling and on Paradise Way. • Worked with Nick Lane Fox on the new Bramham Park walk (Cllr Batt) • Agreed to purchase a WW1 commemorative bench • Liaised with LCC and the police regarding parking issues • Continued inspecting and maintaining the playground. We are very pleased that 3 residents who have joined in to help with this, so thank you to Rochelle Page, Kevin Garbutt and Katherine Bradley. It makes a difference. Continued on page 18

Finance – We had a clean external audit last year, and all continues to be very well controlled by our clerk with regular checks by councillors. Expenditure is checked & signed off at every meeting, and our clerk also provides a monthly bank reconciliation. We are well prepared for audit this year. Marie will give more detail in financial summary (next on agenda). Option Monies and grants process The big good news story this year has been that LCC did exercise the option agreement – ie they bought the strip of land along the Freely Lane edge of the playing field to allow widening of the road should the Bramham House site be developed. So we received £278,000, a fantastic amount of money that will be of great benefit to our village. We investigated our powers to award grants, and set up a process for grant applications. We took Yorkshire Local Councils Association (YLCA) advice on this and used their model documents as a base. We will also be asking YLCA to check our decisions. In early February we held an event for village groups to display projects they want funding for & to get residents’ views and ideas. From this we got some useful feedback showing support for many aspects of the village, the village hall, completing the pavilion, the church, school, playground replacement, and Bramham in Bloom. The event took quite a bit of planning and preparation, and I would like to thank Marie for doing a great deal of it, Cllr Alison Mackie for her preparation work, and the village groups and residents who attended. The Council does feel that replacing the playground is needed. It’s an important asset and maintenance costs have been going up as the equipment has got older. Myself, Marie and Cllr Henderson carried out consultation with children and parents about what sort of play equipment they would like, and we also had some excellent consultation with the school. The school council, pupils from across the year groups, met with me, and my husband who was there helping me out, and gave us the views of the school. It was a lovely meeting and very valuable. The children were a real credit to the school. We have applied for a grant from Caird Bardon to pay for half of the total cost for the playground, and have obtained 4 tenders. A decision from Caird Bardon is expected by the end of May. The closing date for funding applications to the Parish Council was the end of March and the council plans to make decisions on the village projects we will be supporting with grants by the end of end May. As previously reported, money has also been ring-fenced for completion of the pavilion. We also plan to have more funding rounds in the future. Pavilion The Council fully understands and shares, residents’ frustration that over the past year we have not come to a situation where the Council has reached an agreement with the BSLA and the pavilion is open and in use. Some residents have said can’t we ‘just sort it’. We wish it was that easy, but unfortunately it hasn’t been. Continued on page 19

19 Continued from 19

At last year’s meeting I explained that the ‘old lease’ was in fact a draft that had never been completed and so had never taken effect. However, I also explained that the Council was prepared to grant a lease on the same terms to the new BSLA (now a private company with 3 Directors, no longer a village association). Last April the Council offered such a lease to the BSLA – that is, for 30 years, with a right for both parties to end it earlier at any time.

When the Council made this offer, it expected the BSLA to respond promptly by either accepting it unreservedly or with only minor, acceptable modifications. In fact, the BSLA did not respond for four months. When it did, the response took the form of a long letter from its solicitors alleging that the discussions between the Council and the individuals behind the original Bramham Sports and Leisure Association had already given the BSLA effective ownership over the playing field and pavilion.

The Council was deeply concerned by this letter. First, its tone was a drastic change from the nature of the earlier negotiations. Second, the allegation itself was very serious – that the Council had already given away the playing fields and pavilion, for no payment, and without even realising that it had done so. The Council’s solicitors then advised it that what the BSLA was claiming was, from a legal point of view, so completely groundless that neither the BSLA and its solicitors could ever have genuinely believed it. Their conclusion was therefore that the allegation had been made purely to pressurize the Council into giving the BSLA something that it would otherwise never give.

Later, it became clear what this was. The BSLA demanded that the Council grant it a lease for 99 years, with no right to end it earlier, but still at a nominal rent.

The BSLA is not accountable to the Council or to Bramham residents, but nevertheless is requesting the Council to give it the playing fields and pavilion for nothing, and without the Council retaining any control over what the BSLA does with the land or pavilion in the future. The BSLA knows full well that even if the Council wanted to this (and for obvious reasons it does not) it is prevented from doing so by local government legislation obliging it to obtain best value for its assets. Yet the BSLA has refused all invitations to change this position.

• In the meantime, the BSLA has also not complied with the Council’s requests regarding the money that we have set aside to complete the pavilion. This was that the BSLA would provide estimates so that in due course money could be released to pay actual invoices. Instead the BSLA has demanded unconditional release of all the money in advance, with the Council having no control over whether that money is spent on the pavilion – or not . This is clearly not something the Council can properly do, or should do. It is also not what we will be doing with other organisations to whom we award grants. •

It is this deadlock situation that has meant that pavilion remains unfinished, unused and deteriorating. It is deeply frustrating, but the Council cannot and, we are sure you would agree, should not give away very valuable village assets and money which are in reality the property of Bramham residents – which is what the BSLA is demanding.

The Council does not know the BSLA’s real motives, but has been forced to the conclusion that whatever its plans, they do not include the use of the playing fields and pavilion primarily as a facility for Bramham residents. The Council has therefore also concluded that BSLA cannot be entrusted with them. Continued on page 20

20 Continued from 19

The Council therefore decided that it must take the initiative in resolving this matter at the earliest opportunity, and consequently has given notice to the BSLA, with the intention of taking over the pavilion and completing and running the facility itself - with your help.

This notice expires at the end of May, so unless the BSLA accepts it earlier (and there is nothing to stop it doing so), we have to wait until then. The Council wants to use that time to prepare to take over and get the pavilion up & running. The football club is very keen of course to be back, and is interested in acting as caretakers & raising funds to support the pavilion. We also very much want to involve residents, maybe including some past members of the original BSLA, in running the pavilion. We will need you – so please do think about whether or not you can be involved, and any ideas you have about what the facility can be used for and the ongoing running and maintenance.

Neighbourhood Plan With the invaluable help of a small group of residents we have also moved forward with the Neighbourhood Plan. Cllr Keith Innocent has been the lead on this, so thank you to Keith, who will tell you more at a later agenda item. Leeds Festival tickets Cllr Fiona Henderson has been our very hard working lead on Festival Tickets. Last year she took up the facility for residents to buy full price tickets for family & friends who could then use the residents’ enclosure, and for the first time the facility to nominate an additional ticket per household at residents’ price. Fiona also negotiated more tickets than we’ve ever had before, allowing more residents to go at the reduced price, and also generating more money for the Community Fund. Fiona has led again on organising Festival tickets this year, and we are using a PO box, details have been advertised on the website. Applications for tickets are now open, and close 27 April. As usual you can get a form from the shop or download one from the website. Last year’s festival took place on possibly the wettest August Bank Holiday on record which led to some issues with car parks and queues to get home. But despite the “mud fest” the feedback was that it was one of the best festivals ever. Let’s hope for a bit of sunshine this year! Thank you to Fiona for leading on this, and to ex -Cllr Lee Blanchard for hand delivering tickets throughout the village – Lee has very kindly offered to do this again this year. Communications: We have continued throughout the year to communicate fully with residents, with very comprehensive updates in the Parish Magazine, on the website, via our twitter account. Also we have again held some of our meetings in the village hall – enabling more residents to attend. The website has gone from strength to strength, We had over 3,500 unique users last month. As well as being used for Council information, 120 village news items have been posted and 28 village events advertised in the What’s On. The Twitter account has 365 followers and we have made 872 tweets We also use the website and twitter is used to communicate reminders about village events, Leeds festival announcements, putting your bins out, any road incidents, traffic alerts, appealing for witnesses, advertising for volunteers amongst other interesting snippets of info – it has even helped finding lost pets! continued on page 21

21 Continued from page 20

Anyone with a twitter account can follow us on www.thisisbramham. If you have an item of news or an incident you need to share send a message to our twitter account. Thank you to Cllr Alison Mackie for being our communications lead, coming up with lots of ideas, and dragging us into the 21st Century! Bramham Primary School The school head, Sue Pyatt, would have liked to be here tonight but couldn’t make it, so we have made copies of their report available and we will put it on the website. The school is a very valuable part of our community and we are pleased to see it doing so well. Numbers are going up, it has a ‘good’ ofsted rating, and as you’ll see from the report it is moving forward in lots of ways. Congratulations to the head and staff. Other Village activities: Parish Magazine We have continued to give financial support to the Parish Magazine, a church magazine of course, but which also provides a wider village facility. Gill Young and her team do a fantastic job with this, we very much appreciate it both for the Council and for other users. Bramham in Bloom – Congratulations to Ernest & team on another excellent year continuing to keep Bramham looking so lovely. Village Hall – The Village Hall is a tremendous facility, at the heart of our village. Thank you to the Village Hall committee who work so hard running a whole host of events to keep the Hall going and provide a great social scene. Gala– Keith will cover this later in the agenda – but again – a huge thank you to Keith & CAG for so much hard work. All Saints Church – the beautiful heart of our village. We’ll hear from Stanley later. Thank you to all who keep it going. Other – and let’s remember some of the other things going on in the village that keep it such an active community. Thank you to Mavis Wilson who runs the Monday Club, Gerry Taylor for another litter pick, Ann Topping for the YCWA, the NSPCC committee for organising some really fun events that raise money for such a good cause, the drama group for another fantastic panto and other productions, those who keep our allotments going, our shop proprietor and our pub landladies & landlord. Thank you as well to the Parish Council’s employees. Our clerk does an excellent job and much of her work goes unseen outside of the council. Thank you also to Frank, Artie and Mrs Blanchard, our gardener, caretaker & cleaner for keeping the Senior Citizens Centre looking good. Thank you to all of the Councillors who put in so much effort. And I would like to say a special thank you to one Councillor. Many of you will know that Cllr June Halliday has had a difficult year facing some serious illness, but throughout she has amazed us by carrying on putting so much effort into council work, and has earned respect and admiration from us all. So thank you June for being an absolute star. Continued on page 22

22 Continued from page 21

To close: – I mentioned earlier that feedback at the February event supported all of our village groups and facilities, including our pubs and shop. But what came across wasn’t that this was about support for just individual projects or groups, it was about supporting all of these things as being what makes up our community. That’s what people value. The same message as came across at the Community Conference in 2012. As Cllrs we value that too, and remain involved in many aspects of our village life. That’s also why we have the village groups with agenda items tonight. So I would like tonight to focus on a celebration of what we have in Bramham, a great community, and a super place to live. Thank you all for listening. Val Whitbread

EASTER SUNDAY It was great to see the Church so full on Easter Day. There were so many children there that the magic chicken had to rush to the vestry to lay some more chocolate eggs! Thank you to everyone who contributed to the lilies placed in Church at Easter in memory of their departed loved ones. The Church looked absolutely lovely, so many thanks to Dolly and her team of ladies who decorated the church so beautifully for Easter Sunday. Also thank you to the Stepping Stone Children who made the lovely Easter Garden.

BRAMHAM CALENDAR FOR 2015 Don’t forget to keep taking photographs through the Spring and Summer for next year’s Calendar. We will be having the selection process at the beginning of September. All photographs to be considered should be images of Bramham and surrounding areas. These can be left at the Village Shop or given to Gill Young or Rev. Stanley Menzies. The Calendar is now one of the Church’s main fund raiser, so we do hope to have some great photographs for 2015.

Stepping Stones April’s Stepping Stones had an Easter theme. The children enjoyed an Easter trail around the church, following clues to spell out ‘HAPPY EASTER’. Following that, whilst parents and grandparents chatted with a cup of tea, the children sat down to make eggs out of cardboard and tissue paper. Reverend Andy was unable to attend as his first grandchild was due to be born! So, with Andy’s fantastic Bible Stories book, we were able to talk to the children about Jesus’ arrival in Jerusalem and the laying of cloaks and palm leaves on the ground as Jesus rode on his donkey into the city. After the talk it was time for juice & some delicious buns baked by Emma, before going out into the churchyard to construct a living Easter garden. It was fantastic to see all the children getting their hands dirty with the compost, plants and moss. We even managed to construct a tomb from stones found in the churchyard. All the children went home with a yummy Easter egg (most of the eggs didn’t make it home though!). At the Family Service the following Sunday, Reverend Andy asked the children to draw a picture of a donkey, the children were able to show the congregation the results of their hard work. They also read out prayers. The Easter garden was available for everyone to see at the Easter Sunday service. The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. The theme for each Stepping Stones is always linked to the Family Service the following Sunday – these services are very relaxed and child friendly, anyone is welcome to come along and give it a go. Any child is welcome to attend Stepping Stones regardless of whether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 9th May at All Saints Church at 5.30pm. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk. 37 YORKSHIRE COUNTRYWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION .We held our Annual General Meeting in March. At which our Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary reported on another successful year with good speakers and attendances, enjoyable social occasions and especially, the great support of all our members. Our thanks are due to Elna Barton for examining our accounts. We may only be a small branch but we achieved SEVEN awards in the YCA Homecraft Competition held in Wetherby. This was against some stiff competition from county wide branches and those who entered are to be congratulated. Next month we are holding an OPEN-TO-EVERYONE meeting on Wednesday 21st May at 7.15 pm the Village Hall when the speaker will be Samantha Abbey from “Get Ahead Hats”. There will be a small charge of £2 which includes supper and a raffle and visitors will, as ever, be made most welcome. Jean Dale

MONDAY CLUB PLEASE NOTE THAT BECAUSE OF EASTER BANK HOLIDAY, THE DATE HAS BEEN CHANGED.

The next meeting is on Monday 12th May 1.30 pm in the Village Hall We look forward to seeing all Senior Citizens, and would especially love to see some new faces.

A FRESH NEW LOOK FOR CLIFFORD PRE-SCHOOL Clifford Pre-School are announcing their impending re-launch, complete with brand new logo, website and a fresh new look planned for inside. Backed by an active and vibrant committee of local parents, the pre-school staff would like to celebrate their latest OFSTED grading of ‘Good’ by opening up their doors to the surrounding villages. With funded and non-funded spaces currently available for children from 18 months (and in nappies) to school age, Clifford Pre-School warrants closer inspection from any parent valuing early-years education in a quiet, rural setting. Join our 'caring and nurturing' (OFSTED 2012) staff at our 'Stay and Play' dates every Wednesday in the Easter holidays and see just what we have to offer. With access to the surrounding fields as well as the gym and library at St John’s School for the Deaf, you’ll be surprised at the variety of experiences a small village setting can offer.

40 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Improved access to the hall At the parish drop in event, several users of the Village Hall expressed concern that the access to the supper room in winter was not ideal. The shrubs lining the path were overgrown and the security light did not illuminate. We have also been made aware of at least two incidents of people losing their footing on the steps from the car park in the dark, or have stumbled on the small wall at the side of the road. The committee have started to take action to improve the access. •

Firstly we have cut back all the shrubs. We would like to sow poppies in the bed for this WWI memorial year, and maybe replace with low growing shrubs in future.

Secondly we are replacing the security lights so that they illuminate the path and the steps.

Thirdly we plan to change the steps so that each one is the same depth with the same riser depth/height for each step.

Fourthly we will paint the small wall to make it more visible.

We are also hoping to be able to replace the external door to the supper room as funds become available.

Update on the Cosy Cottage As we have reported in previous editions the Village Hall does not “own” the cottage. The committee maintains the cottage that was given to the Village with the hall. Suggestions that the cottage should be sold to release funds is not an option. The original plan was that committee members would renovate the cottage and that it would be let to produce a steady income for the hall. Unfortunately the renovation was a much bigger task than anticipated, especially as those involved have full time jobs outside the village. The renovation involved a new/replacement roof, a full rewire, a complete central heating and plumbing installation, a new kitchen and bathroom, new stud partition walls on the first floor, insulation and re-plastering of the second floor room, removal of existing plaster on all downstairs walls to allow replacement with correct lime plaster, new door and window to the front, and finally complete redecoration. To date the roof has been replaced and some of the internal rewiring and insulation completed. It is estimated that it could cost as much as £30,000 to finally complete the work using building professionals. Until the work is complete committee can’t comment about plans for letting.

41 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM JUDGING 2014 At last the sun shone and the Village could not have looked better. This is thanks to many people ie:The Gardeners and helpers. The group of litter pickers. All the residents who tidied their gardens and displayed our posters. The residents who came to meet the Judges. As we have said many times this is a Village enterprise and the Judges were duly impressed. As usual they were very impressed with the Church and Churchyard, I don’t think that they had seen anything like it before. They particularly liked the Memorial Bench in the Senior Citizens Centre and “Rested a While” This of course is the first of two visits, the next one being in July, The result not coming out until September. SO please keep on top of things during the Summer so that we can impress them yet again. Bramham in Bloom Committee

Thought for the Month The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. Abraham Lincoln

Why are the brains of the Elderly Slow ? The brains of older people only appear to slow down because they have so much information to compute, much like a full-up hard drive. Scientists believe elderly people have so much information in their brain that it takes longer for them to access it. Older people do not decline mentally with age, it just takes them longer to recall facts because they have more information in their brains, scientists believe. It has been suggested that much like a computer struggles as the hard drive gets full up, so do humans take longer to access information, Researchers say this slowing down is not the same as cognitive decline. “The human brain works slower in old age,” said Dr. Michael Ramscar, “but only because we have stored so much information over time. “The brains of older people do not get weak. On the contrary, they simply know more.” Now you know! We are not losing it, there is just too much in our hard drive and the processor is a bit slow selecting the correct data! SO THERE!! We Are All Brilliant!!
