Who do we trust? The shift in the public perception of organisations has been vast in my lifetime (and I am not that old!). I grew up in an environment where, generally, ‘public’ institutions and people who worked for the good of communities were trusted and believed to be doing their best. Now, mistrust and scepticism would be the defining feature. We question everything that comes from any organisation, ‘expert’ or ‘leader’. It seems there are few givens, and established truths that are, generally, shared across society. Even our charitable organisations now suffer from a widely held scepticism, something the public sector has been used to for rather longer. Undoubtedly, organisations of all kinds have given us reason to question their effectiveness and their standards of practice. There is nothing wrong with questioning, and calling organisations to account, but the balance has tipped to distrust to such an extent that it is adversely affecting many of our most vulnerable people. So, in this context, how do we ensure that those who are in need, do get the help and support they need? How do we work together to address some of the most intransigent problems in our society? We need organisations, we need communities and we need individuals who will be proactive and be prepared to take risks for the sake of others. Sadly, the Church is not immune to these problems. As an organisation run by people, we too fail at times, we too get it wrong, and so are subject to much the same level of mistrust as any other public or charitable organisation. When we, the Church, gets it wrong, it seems to hold and even deeper significance. We are the Body of Christ, and Christ himself would want no part of our greatest errors. And yet, he has chosen to work through us, with all our many imperfections. How are we to fulfil this responsibility he has given us? In some ways even asking ourselves that question shows how easily we stray from God’s purposes. For the answer is that it is through him that we receive the power and guidance to complete the tasks he has given us. If all that we do is grounded in prayer, and a strong relationship with Christ, both personally and collectively, then we won’t go far wrong. It is when we lose sight of him that we err.

Recently I read an article that talked about this loss of trust and it suggested that we (all those in ‘public’ institutions) need to do more to explain what we do and how it benefits both individuals and wider society. In the case of the church, yes we do need to explain, but more importantly we need to live in the light of Christ. If we do so, our explanation becomes less essential, as our Christlikeness becomes more apparent. And we need to be wary of falling into the same trap as others and to allow scepticism to impact on our generosity to those in need. The early church was one in which people lived as community, collectively meeting the needs of those around them. This model is difficult to emulate fully today, but the principle of working together for the common good, and especially for the good of those for whom life is tough, is an important dynamic of the Christian life. Revd Jane Brown

New Youth Group for Boston Spa and the surrounding villages / area Due to low numbers, our Holy Mackerel group has not been running since Christmas. I have been working with Phil Baraniak, youth pastor for the Kings Church to look at alternative options. We have decided to form a joint group affiliated to Young Life to offer youth activities in our area. Young Life is a national network of Christian youth groups for teens and twenties. They have two other groups based in Harrogate and York which we could meet up with from time to time. Our aim is to provide a place for young people to grow spiritually; to make friends that could last for life; and to provide opportunities to lead and serve in their local churches. We aim to start our programme on the 4th of May and run fortnightly on Friday evenings. The programme will be resourced by leaders from St Mary's and The King's Church and be offered for young people in yr 9+. It will run fortnightly, from 7:30-9pm, in the homes of our leaders. All Safeguarding will be carried out by Young Life, and leaders will have to submit their DBS details to Young Life and more information is available on their website: https://www.younglife.org Kate Kennedy

April 2018 Update ....communicating with residents MICK WRIGHT; Everyone on the Parish Council is very sad to hear that Mick has passed away. He will be fondly remembered as a lovely man and as someone who gave so much to Bramham Football Club and the village. We send our condolences to Mick’s family and will be discussing ideas to commemorate Mick. PLANNING ISSUES: Bramham House – whilst we welcome development on the site we are lodging objections at the lack of affordable housing for young people, some loss of habitat, and car parking and safety issues. Old Hall Cottage: There were objections to this application for several reasons including loss of privacy, the adverse effect on the character of the village, concerns about the effect on the natural habitat and the need for any development to be in keeping with the conservation area status of this location. Church Hill: The Parish Council is liaising with LCC to ensure that correct planning permissions are obtained and to seek reassurance that works carried out so far do not present a danger. ALMSHOUSE HILL PLOT: The Council received 2 bids and resolved to sell to the highest bidder. ANNUAL PARISH MEETING– Monday 30th April, Village Hall, 8pmNext Meeting: Wednesday 2 May, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. Report on the AGM of the Bramham Community Action Group and Gala Committee The AGM was held on April 4th at the Senior Citizens Shelter after a cancelled AGM due to the snow and 2 re arranged venues! Unfortunately we were disappointed in the numbers who turned up. Only one non committee member came along and due to sickness, holidays and other commitments only 2 committee members were there. However the small select group carried out the AGM successfully. The session opened with the election of the officers, with Vicky and I standing down from the committee we voted Philippa Dalton as chair, Fiona Henderson as Treasurer and Jo Ogden as secretary until September when Amanda Whitney will return to be secretary. However we need more people on board to help organise events in the village. It is so disappointing to have a great group doing a lot for the community in the village that appears to be ignored by the majority of the village. The Gala, Christmas Lights, Open Gardens and Beacon events don’t just happen! We need more people to volunteer. If we don’t get more help the group won’t be able to lay on these events and then people will be disappointed that nothing happens in the village. We agreed that the Gala is to take place on June 16th and we have booked a great dog display and agility team who are also running a dog show, so if you are coming along please bring your dog and enter the dog show. We also have the majorettes and a steel band to entertain us in the beer tent. The NSPCC will be providing the bar be cue and the beer tent will be open with real ales, lager, soft drinks and cocktails. Its free to enter and car parking is available on site.

BRAMHAM COMMUNITY ACTION GROUP CONTINUED……... We will be taking part in the National Beacon event on November 11th to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. The beacon will be on the field off Windmill Road so watch out for more details. We have been lucky to have secured a grant which helps us provide the Christmas Lights again this year. We need your support and help. Not only turning up at these events but to help organise it. Its great fun, doesn’t take too much time but if you can volunteer you will be joining a great team, doing a lot of good in the village. If you want to know more contact Keith Innocent on 07595206611

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM WELCOME TO SPRING Sunshine, warmth and colour is slowly becoming felt and seen in the village. Considering the weather and pressure on our small group of volunteer gardeners the committee made a decision to opt out of the Spring Judging this year. We are confident that we made the right decision. However the flowers are beginning to show lots of colour, tulips and daffodils growing together which has happened because of the cold wet spring. Bramham Village Hall news May 2018 Another successful Ceilidh, despite the snow. A huge thanks to all who joined us for the St Patrick’s night Ceilidh, specially those who had to drive in the snow. It was a great evening with most people joining in many of the different reels and dances. There was also lots of praise for the home made supper of irish stew, apple sponge and cheese and biscuits. Thanks to fellow committee members who spent most of the day preparing the food. The Fiddlers Wreck Ceilidh Band have been booked and will return in 2019 for a “Spring Ceilidh” on Saturday 23 March 2019 – please put a clear note in your diary and save the date. Organ Restoration Appeal As I am sure you are all aware that the organ in All Saints is in need of extensive renovation and the cost of this will be in the region of £75,000. As a start to this figure the Community fund has donated £35,000 and we have applied to different organisations for funds. We are intent on raising money from the local businesses and more importantly you the parishioners who live in Bramham and benefit from the continuing well-being of the Church. We wish to raise the necessary funds with a short sharp campaign and will be using the concert of the Drighlington Brass Band on the 10th June as a fund-raising event. As well as the Band we will have entertainment from the Bramham Singing Group and will provide Wine and Light Snacks. Tickets are £10. It would seem silly to risk the collected money on social events which may or may not appeal to the Village and we think it more sensible to hold a celebratory event when the organ is restored to its full strength. To this end we would expect to be able to invite all those who have supported us in this endeavour and perhaps only organise a Raffle for the purpose of setting up a maintenance fund to care for the organ over its expected 80 – 90 year trouble free span. If you have any questions or suggestions I would be very happy to answer them at a session after the Band concert Chips Browning churchwarden For details of payment please ring 842850
