Clergy Letter from Revd. Trish Anslow I am writing to you all in the week after Easter Sunday and my mind is still in a whirl after the rejoicing. Those from the benefice who joined us at St. Mary’s church at 5.30am for the dawn service will understand what I mean by joyous! During the start to the service when we listened to those wonderful words from the Book of Genesis we could all feel the wonder of creation; “And God saw that it was good”. To walk outside into the churchyard in the hour around sunrise and stand and listen to the birds declaring their greeting to the morning hour was a living example of what God has given to us. What is it about the early days of Spring that gladdens our hearts? We delight in the longer hours of daylight and the chance to be outside at the end of a working day instead of sitting around the fire. Our faces and hands feel the glow of warmer air and our gloves are put away till the Autumn. The scents and colours that come with the fresh growth and the flowers bring joy to us as we view the opening of the new season. This is all a long winded way to get round to talking about our task of stewardship of this precious world of ours. We are very privileged to be resident in this small corner of the big and mighty world. It is our responsibility to act in this area on behalf of all those made in God’s image throughout the world. Here we are as the present generation with a great task to do. It would be so simple to ignore our personal responsibility and

assume that someone else will pick up the tab. Each of us has to do something, however small, to contribute to the wider task. We can be sure that we recycle whatever is possible to re-use and pass this message on to all our friends and neighbours. It is amazing how many folk do not think their land filled rubbish will scar the world. Thanking God at the beginning of each day for his creation would be a reminder to us all that in each day we can achieve some sort of stewardship and thereby keep up the good work. I was saddened to see, in this benefice, someone unwrap something in his car and drop the wrapping out of his car window without trace of conscience for his actions. We like to think that people near us would never do such a thing, but evidence proves otherwise! Such a small action multiplied by many will damage our inheritance. In all the thousands of years since humans have inherited God’s creation, each generation has taken on the task of stewardship of this gift and it is ours right now. I would not like to think that we were the ones to disappoint the following generations. Wake up early one fine day and walk outside and see what God gave you. Listen to the birds and marvel in the design of something so small that can create such melodies. If this does not move you, in body and soul, then our part of this world is doomed. We need to believe that God can still look on us and our world and say that it is good.

Rev Trish

7 GLENDA WEBB It was announced on Easter Sunday that Glenda Webb has been appointed by the Archbishop as the new curate of the Benefice of Brayton and she will serve her title in the Parishes of St. Wilfrid and St. Francis of Assisi with The Rev. Pete Watson. Glenda has served in many different capacities over 27 years, liturgically and pastorally, particularly at St. Mary’s; she was also Deanery Secretary and most recently our Parish Administrator for three years. During the last year Glenda has preached and served across all the churches of our parishes. A very big thank you to Glenda for her great contribution and for all that she has accomplished here. We offer her our congratulations and pray for God’s blessing on her new ministry and for all the Family. Glenda’s ordination to the Diaconate is on 5th July at York Minster and there is a list for a place on the coach at the back of church which needs to be signed as soon as possible. Following the ordination ceremony there will be a reception for Glenda in St. Mary’s Parish Room.

Stepping Stones April’s Stepping Stones had an Easter theme. Whilst parents and grandparents chatted with a cup of tea; the children sat down to decorate and colour in 3D crosses. Following a story about Jesus and the Garden of Gethsemane, it was time for juice, biscuits and of course Easter eggs, before going out into the churchyard to construct a living Easter garden. It was fantastic to see all the children having a go with compost, plants and soil. We even managed to construct a tomb from stones found in the churchyard. Then the bit the children had been waiting for…… the Easter Hunt. The children followed some clues to search the Church for hidden letters. Once they had all the letters, they arranged them to make a phrase related to Easter. All the children got it right and they were able to take away their Easter Egg prize. At the Family Service (which is very relaxed and child friendly) the following Sunday, Reverend Stanley asked the children to show the congregation the results of their hard work on the Easter garden. They also read out prayers. The Easter garden was available for everyone to see at the Easter Sunday service. Chips Browning made an excellent Easter Bunny, handing out Easter eggs to the children (and some adults). All were gratefully received. The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. The theme for Stepping Stones is always linked to the Family Service the following Sunday – these services are very relaxed and child friendly. Any child is welcome to attend whether they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 8th May at All Saints Church - 5.30pm. For more information please contact Jennie Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk.

April 2015 Update ....communica ng with residents

To All Bramham Residents – an update from the April meeting. Parish Council Elections: Bramham Parish Council is made up of nine councillor positions and six people have put themselves forward via the nomination process. These six residents are therefore automatically elected and there will not be an election on the 7 May. Your six councillors are: Ian Dalton, June Halliday, Fiona Henderson, Scott Jones, Linda Richards and Val Whitbread. The three remaining vacancies can be filled by co-option, ie selection by the Council. The village benefits from a full council and we would be delighted to hear from anyone who is considering joining us. The process for co-option will be considered at the May meeting, but in the meantime, if you are interested, contact the clerk or any councillor for an informal chat. Goodbye to Mrs Blanchard: Mrs Blanchard, who has for many a year kept the Senior Citizens’ Centre so spick and span, with her personal touch, is now leaving us. The Council extends its sincere thanks and appreciation for her work, and wishes her well. Anyone interested in stepping in as a cleaner for one hour a week please contact the clerk. Protecting the Playing Field: The Council decided to move forward with obtaining Fields in Trust (FIT) protection for the playing field. FIT is a Royally founded National Charity for the protection of green space. Through FIT we can set up a deed to determine future protection from development. Spend of £50k from the options money: You might recall that the Council at one point, before it was aware of the rules regarding how we can spend options money, agreed to pay the BSLA £50,000 from the option monies, which they would return to the Community Fund (CF). Because we couldn’t legally do this (all payments had to be for capital items), we agreed with the CF that we would jointly decide on how best the money would be distributed. As a result we have agreed to use the £50,000 as follows: £25,000 towards the pavilion costs, £11,800 towards the playground, £10,000 for adult exercise equipment on the playing field, £2,000 for Bramham Football Club for benches at the pavilion and £1,200 for a Bramham in Bloom flower trough. This was reported in the April Parish Magazine by the CF secretary. We are very pleased to have come to this agreement, however to avoid confusion we would like to clarify that these payments are from the option monies, not from last year’s Festival Ticket proceeds. Any queries regarding those proceeds should be addressed to the CF secretary. Continued on page 27

Speed signs: We are delighted to report that 20mph speed advisory signs near the school will be installed this coming year. This is after we agreed to pay £1,200 towards them, with Clifford PC paying the same, and Leeds City Council Highways paying £2,400. Bramham Park footpath: Bramham Park have advised that a section of the circular walk, from Hope Hall to Tenter Hill is currently closed due to National Grid work. However you can still complete the circuit by walking on the road for this section.

Police phone number: please note that the Leeds number for non-urgent issues is no longer manned, please use 101 instead. Next Meeting: The May meeting is the Annual Meeting of the Council where chair and vice chair are elected, and representatives on working groups are decided. It will take place on Wednesday 13 May, 7.30 pm, in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. (It was scheduled for a week later than usual in case an election had been required 7 May.) We hope you find this update useful. 35 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM SPRING JUDGING 2015 The judges arrived on the 16th April and the weather was very kind. The floral displays looked at their best and clearly a lot of hard work had been involved. Litter was non existent due to our team of litter pickers and there certainly was a lot to clear up especially on the access road. Many thanks to everyone who helped. Also many thanks to all the residents who made the extra effort to tidy their gardens, the Judges do drive round the Village not just go where we take them. They seemed impressed and there were no unfavorable comments but we still have another judging in the Summer. Posters, designed by children of Bramham School, were admired by the judges. They also commented on the great number that they could see around the village. Well done to everyone in our community who has contributed their time, sponsorship and effort to make our village such a delight! The Summer Judging Date has been agreed and this is on the morning of the 10th July, so a note for your diary.

Bramham in Bloom Committee FOOD BANKS NEED OUR SUPPORT Thousands of people regularly go hungry because they have not enough money to make ends meet. They face impossible choices between eating and heating, feeding their children or paying the rent or the mortgage. Food banks provide responsive emergency relief with a pack of 3 days balanced food. The food banks are run by volunteers who work in collaboration with medical staff, social workers and other caring services. As times get tougher the number of food banks is increasing. We have containers in Bramham Church for you to provide items of food. They will then be taken weekly to the food bank. The Church is now open most days from 9.00 am or on a Sunday morning. As you go shopping remember the food bank and buy some item to put in the container in Bramham Church. The most suitable products are:- UHT or powdered milk, sugar, soup, pasta sauce, tinned sponge pudding, tinned tomatoes, cereals, tinned rice pudding, tea bags/coffee, rice/pasta, tinned meat/fish, tinned fruit, jam , biscuits Your generosity will be much appreciated. Revd Stanley Menzies

39 BRAMHAM ANNUAL PARISH MEETING 16 APRIL 2015 - CHAIRMAN’S REPORT Bramham Parish Council It’s been a very busy year, but also a very positive one where we’ve achieved a great deal. Everyday business - a few examples are: School speed signs: I met with the school and LCC Highways and agreed a way of funding speed advisory signs, with BPC donating 1,200, Clifford PC the same, and LCC 2,400. The signs will be installed in the coming year. Bowcliffe Road and Folly Lane have been resurfaced. We make sure that stolen and damaged items are replaced, eg bottle bank and Battle of Bramham Moor commemoration. We promoted a campaign to push for Superfast broadband, and it has now been installed. Thank you to those residents who joined in the campaign. Option Monies and grants process To recap briefly from last year’s meeting – we had received the options money (£278k) from Leeds City Council in return for the sale of the strip of land along the playing field, we had set up a robust process for grant applications, and been through a consultation process with residents regarding the awarding of grants. We invited applications for grants, and held an event for residents to give views on proposed projects, giving everyone the opportunity to have input to the decisions to be made. This, to me, and other councillors, was a hugely important part of the decision making, as we do believe that on such important issues as the spend of this very large amount of money, consultation is a must. We allocated money for 3 big projects which have made a very big difference to Bramham: Playground: £65,000. We now have a fantastic new playground and it’s brilliant to see it being so well used and enjoyed. It has been lovely to see families up there enjoying the playground and the playing field. We saw this very much as an investment for the current and future children in the village and look forward to many years of fun in the future. Thank you to Cllrs Henderson and Halliday, and to Marie, for their work in getting the playground costed, planned and implemented. Village Hall: £58,000. We awarded this grant to the Village Hall to be used for replacing the roof and renovating Cosy Cottage. Again this was an investment in the future of a village asset, a fantastic one that is well used by so many different groups within the village. I would just like to say that even though the Village Hall received this grant, it by no means paid for all of the work. The Village Hall committee works very hard, and has done for many years, to raise funds. In particular, over the last few years, four residents, Cllr Ian Dalton, Christine Suddaby, Mick and Chris Wray, have put in an astonishing number of hours of hard graft. They did a great deal of the work on the cottage renovation themselves. The grant enabled the completion, but the project wouldn’t have happened without their amazing efforts. Thank you! Pavilion: £80,656. Last year I reported that we had given the BSLA notice in order to get the pavilion finished and opened. The notice ran out in May. The Parish Council then took over, and used this money to complete the building and external works. The build before the Council took over was as a result of grants from BIFFA, Green Leeds, Grantscape, and the Community Fund, procured by the original BSLA, and in particular Moira Pool. Thank you to those organisations, and to Moira. Continued on page 40

We are all now hugely relieved and delighted to see the pavilion open and in use. Bramham Football Club is playing at home again, the Tadcaster Britannia Team is also using it, and we have 5 Star Children’s football on Saturday mornings. Again we saw this as an investment in a village asset for the long term future. Thank you again to Marie, who along with myself and Stephen Kitchen, worked with the QS and builders to see the project through to completion. The Parish Council set up a Pavilion Management Team to run the pavilion and plan an official opening. I’ll come back to that later. Smaller grants awarded were: Community Action Group: £3,780 for electricity supply for Christmas motif lights on Front Street, and £2,000 for new Christmas tree lights. Bramham in Bloom: £500 for a stone trough by the church, and £700 for a bench on Wetherby Road. Drama Group: £5,000 for a new PA system and hearing loop. Agreement with Community Fund You might recall that the Council at one point, before it was aware of the rules regarding how we can spend money, agreed to pay the BSLA £50,000 from the option monies, which they would return to the Community Fund. Because we couldn’t legally do this (all payments had to be for capital items), we agreed with the Community Fund that we would spend it on the following: £25,000 towards the pavilion costs, £11,800 towards the playground, £10,000 for adult exercise equipment on the playing field, £2,000 for Bramham Football Club for benches at the pavilion. £1,200 for a Bramham in Bloom flower trough We were very pleased to reach this agreement with the Community Fund committee and put the issue to rest. Just to avoid any confusion, I do point out that these payments are from the option monies, not from last year’s Festival Ticket proceeds. Section 137 grants Awarding of grants from the option money had to be under fairly strict rules about what Parish Councils can spend funds on. This meant that we couldn’t always award grants where we would have liked to. Because of this we awarded some grants from section 137 monies, this is the proportion of the precept that we can spend on village projects. We awarded: £240 to the Monday Club for entertainment costs, £1,275 to help with Gala costs, £950 to the Church for boundary fencing repairs, £500 to Folly Allotments for boundary hedging , £300 Contribution to the Parish Magazine. Senior Citizens’ Centre One idea for spend of options money was to add water and a toilet to the Senior Citizens’ Centre. We did investigate this and costs would be in the region of £25,000. Reluctantly we came to the conclusion that this was too high a figure, and did not proceed. We will however be re-decorating. If residents have any views or ideas we would be happy to hear them. Finance Marie will cover this later, but I do point out that the issues that I have just covered, ie the option agreement monies, the grants process, and the completion of the pavilion and playground, have meant that there has been a very significant amount of extra finance work for our Marie. Despite this our finances continue to be very well controlled. We had another clean external audit last year, and are well prepared for audit this year. Pavilion Management Team I mentioned earlier that a team has been set up to manage the pavilion, reporting to the Council. We asked for volunteers and I’m very pleased that some came forward. It’s a mix of residents, councillors and footballers, chaired by Stephen Kitchen with Gerry Taylor as secretary. We held a preview day in January for residents to come and have a look round. The pavilion is open on Saturday mornings and providing refreshments when 5 star are there, and the team is well underway with planning the official opening on 25th April. We’re delighted that Melvin Benn is going to be cutting the ribbon as official opener (12 noon – be there!), there are lots of activities planned including children’s cycle cross, organised by Georgina Mills and Fiona Taylor, a display by the school, fitness displays, and more. Rochelle Page is organising a design a pavilion shield competition. BFC are organising a Tug of War. There will be a raffle with some excellent prizes, including tickets for the Latitude music festival, donated by Melvin Benn, an autographed Leeds Carnegie shirt, and an autographed Leeds Rhinos rugby ball. Refreshments will be available, and at 2pm Bramham Football Club playing at home. Please do come, it’ll be a great day. And if anyone else is interested in joining the team just let us know. Our aim is for the pavilion to be a true village asset. Neighbourhood Plan Up until last summer the Neighbourhood Plan group was chaired by Keith Innocent. Keith did an excellent job and when he felt he had to leave due to pressures on his time we were very sorry to lose him. Another member of the group, John Lynch, took on the role of chair and is doing a very able job. John will tell you more about the group and the issues it is facing at a later agenda item. Thank you Keith, for setting up the group, your hard work whilst you were Chair, and for getting it into a very good state. Leeds Festival tickets Cllr Fiona Henderson has again been our very hard working lead on Festival Tickets. Again Fiona has secured a number of nominated tickets for non-residents, and full price tickets with residents’ perks. This has been a very welcome addition in the last few years. Thank you and well done to Fiona for introducing these improvements for residents and for being prepared to put in the extra work to manage them. Communications: Communications have remained a very important aspect of the Council. We fully report all issues in the magazine and in meeting minutes. We respond to residents and ask for residents’ views on important issues. We don’t always get as many responses as we would like, but the opportunity is certainly there. The website continues to be well used. Thank you again to Cllr Alison Mackie for being our communications lead. Continued on page 42

Bramham Primary School The school couldn’t be with us tonight. They will provide a report which we will put on their website. Future Looking towards the future: There isn’t going to be an election for the Parish Council. Fewer people than there are places put themselves forward and they are therefore automatically elected. Your cllrs are Ian Dalton, June Halliday, Fiona Henderson, Scott Jones, a very welcome new cllr, Linda Richards, and myself, Val Whitbread. The 3 vacancies can be filled by a process known as coopting. We’ll sort out the details at the May meeting. We do need a full council, please do think about whether or not you can give some time and be involved. An important issue for the future is that of the playing field. At the last meeting the Council decided to move forward with putting in place protection against development for the playing field via a charitable organisation called Fields in Trust, whose purpose is to protect green space, by means of a deed. I do hope that the Council moving forward will want to continue with this, to make sure that Bramham’s only green space remains as precisely that, and to residents to use. Thank you Council employees: Thank you again to our employees. Marie, who as I said earlier, has had a very high workload to do this year. Thank you also to Frank and Artie, who have kept the garden of the Senior Citizens’ Centre looking so good, as well as taking on extra tasks such as refurbishing benches, and cutting back weeds at the pavilion. Also a thank you and farewell to Mrs Blanchard, who has now given up cleaning at the Senior Citizens’ Centre after doing an excellent job for many years. Thank you to all of the councillors, and in particular this year I’d like to thank Keith Innocent, who is leaving the Council after a fair few years. Keith’s contribution has always been invaluable. To me he is someone who is prepared to listen to, and consider, differing views, give his own, and help us to reach a reasoned decision. He is going to be sorely missed. And a very big thank you to all of those people who give their time to Bramham. This year I do have to pick a couple of key events. Bramham in Bloom, a gold award, fantastic! Thank you to Ernest and all in the Bramham in Bloom group. The NSPCC Committee for a brilliant celebration of the Tour de France, with the Scarecrow Trail and the fantastic French Night here in the Village Hall. Thank you also to Keith and the Community Action Group for the gala and gardens open day, Gill and the Parish Magazine team, the Village Hall committee, the Drama Group, Mavis and the Monday Club, the Yorkshire Country Women’s Association for the teas and cakes at village events, the new pavilion team and those helping with the opening, and everyone who gives their time to make Bramham such a great village. We’re very lucky to have those people, life here wouldn’t be half as good without them. Thank you all for listening.

Val Whitbread

Thought for the month As long as you live, keep smiling because it brightens everybody’s day Vin Scully

YOUR MONTHLY SMILE As Mary left a meeting, she desperately gave herself a personal search. She was looking for her keys. They were not in her pockets. A quick search in the meeting room revealed nothing. Suddenly she realized she must have left them in the car. Frantically, she headed for the car park. Her husband had scolded her many times for leaving the keys in the ignition. Her theory was the ignition is the best place not to lose them. His theory is that the car will be stolen. As she scanned the car park she came to a terrifying conclusion! His theory was right. The car park was empty. Mary immediately called the police. She gave them her location, confessed that she had left her keys in the car and that it had been stolen. Then she made the most difficult call of all to her husband "Hello my love", she stammered; she always call him "My Love" in times like these. "I left my keys in the car, and it has been stolen." There was a period of silence. She thought the call had disconnected, but then she heard his voice. He barked, "I dropped you off!" Now it was her time to be silent. Embarrassed, she said, "Well, come and get me." He retorted sharply "I will, as soon as I convince this policeman I haven’t stolen your car." This is what they call, " the Golden Years!"
