3 Clergy Letter from Rev’d Trish Anslow It is amazing how quickly four months passes by! I am sitting in front of my laptop writing this Clergy letter and it seems like only last week that I wrote to you before. I wonder what has happened in your life since you last heard from me. It was the beginning of June if you want to spare the time to recall. I was waiting for those fantastic two weeks in July when I would be on holiday. Fourteen days of lazing around with a book in my hand and not much else to do except apply the sun crème. My mind definitely goes off at a tangent in such circumstances. I spent part of an afternoon thinking about Jesus and whether he took a holiday! I think it must have been a touch of the sun that sparked off the train of thought. We can read about how he kept trying to take time on his own to reflect and pray. He didn’t seem to be successful at that if Matthew’s Gospel is to be read correctly. Jesus withdrew, presumably to be alone (chapter 14), and was immediately besieged by crowds of followers. The only time he was able to be alone seems to be in the Wilderness after his baptism and in the Garden of Gethsemane just before his betrayal. The rest of the time he was at the beck and call of his followers. Jesus tried to teach his disciples to think for themselves about the good news. They were just like you and me, ready to listen and follow instructions, but not too good at thinking it out for themselves! ‘Just tell us what to do!’ We listen to the readings in a service and the preaching on those words and resolve to do as we are bidden. Then our minds forget to take the words and dwell on them! We don’t listen to them as the starting place for reflection and expansion, merely do’s and don’ts. Where would our ministries be if we listened and thought for ourselves? Jesus gave the disciples a great commission to go out and proclaim the good news and make more disciples. They were left to be strengthened by the Spirit, but work it out for themselves. No one told them where to go or how to do it; it was their own choices that eventually spread the word far and wide. We are accused these days of being in a ‘nanny state’; cossetted and wrapped in cotton wool so that we won’t be hurt. Well perhaps we should break out occasionally and find that uncomfortable corner to listen and reflect until it pushes us into doing something. It might be something radical like owning up to being a Christian to a stranger and seeing where the conversation goes, or something more subtle such as joining the next Pilgrim course! It has to be something! Spend a few moments thinking of those first disciples; what if they had heard Jesus’ words, seen the crucifixion, experienced his resurrection and gone home and put the dinner on? We might still be waiting for the good news!

Rev Trish

Stepping Stones October’s Stepping Stones was the first very well attended – it was fantastic to see some new faces. In preparation for the following Sunday’s Harvest Festival, Reverend Andy told the story of creation – Genesis, and how God created the world. The children were very enthusiastic in following Andy’s story, and in taking part with the activities. The seventh day was especially popular when everyone rested. The children beautifully decorated the harvest hamper boxes which were delivered to members of the community after Sunday’s service. A big thank you to all the ‘Posties’ who helped deliver the much appreciated hampers to the Bramham Villager’s on the list. The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. The theme for Stepping Stones is always linked to the Family Service the following Sunday – these services are very relaxed and child friendly. This years Harvest Festival service was very lively and interactive, there were drums, pictures, processions and all sorts! Any child is welcome to attend Stepping Stones regardless of if they attend any Church or not. It is simply a way of meeting other families in a relaxed friendly environment. The next session is on Friday 7th November at All Saints Church - 5.30pm. Novembers Family Service will be our Remembrance Service at All Saints on Sunday (9th November) at 9.45am, followed by a short service at 11am by the war memorial - we do hope you can come. For more information please contact Jen Saynor jen@saynor.me.uk.

9 BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Pool Table – free to a good home! Many users of the hall will know that there is a pool table in the main kitchen. This was used by some of the local gents who latterly played on Monday afternoons, and also by the Youth Group when it was run by Sue and Denise. However, for many years the table has remained covered and unused. The gents who used to play have now said that they would like to donate it to a good home. There are pool cues and balls but the release mechanism for the balls requires old ten pence pieces (which the hall does not have), or a replacement mechanism can be fitted If anyone would like to take the table please contact the Committee (details below). You will have to arrange to remove it and it is very, very heavy.

Car Parking at the Village Hall More and more events are being held at the Village Hall, both regular weekly classes and occasional parties or events. However, the Committee has received complaints from users that they have been unable to park their cars on the car park as spaces have already been taken and cars have parked over two spaces. The Committee does not want to restrict the car park by means of gates and barriers so requests that residents, especially those close to the hall, respect that the car park is for users of the hall.

2015 bookings We are already taking bookings for parties and events in 2015. If you know that you are likely to want to use the hall for your event, especially weekend children’s parties or evening events, please contact the bookings email or telephone number where a committee member can assist in making the booking.

Update on Cosy Cottage The Committee thanks local residents, especially on Low Way, for their patience during the building works at the cottage By the time this article is published we hope that the cottage renovation will be almost complete, with just final decoration to be completed. The committee is grateful for funding from the Parish council and also for those who have supported fund raising events such as the Beer Festival. We also thank those organisers of events who have asked Committee to run a bar – all the profits from these bars goes towards the ongoing renovation of the cottage and the hall.

New Years Eve The regular New Years Eve celebrations will be back this year, by popular demand – see separate item in the magazine for details. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. October 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents: Update from October Meeting

Pavilion Completion Underway!

The Parish Council is delighted to report that it has agreed a contractor to complete the pavilion, and by the time you read this work should have started, with a target of finishing before Christmas. This includes completion and decorating of the building, and external car parking, pathways and landscaping. We look forward to developing the pavilion and playing field into a true village facility, starting with the welcome return home of Bramham Football Club. Don’t forget – we need residents to get involved in running the pavilion and in fund raising to support it. Please think about giving just some of your time for your village. If you might be interested please contact the clerk or talk to a councillor.

New playground! We have also agreed a supplier and a design for a new playground to completely replace the existing one which is now old and costly to maintain. It’s a super design, taking into account the views we gathered from playground users, particularly the children from Bramham school. We do have to clarify planning issues with Leeds City Council but aim to construct the playground early in the New Year. Do have a look on our website www.thisisbramham.co.uk to see the design!

Village Hall! The Village Hall now has its new roof, and work on the cottage attached to the Village Hall is making great strides. Once the cottage is complete and let, it will provide a valuable income to help to enable the Village Hall to continue as a much loved and much used village facility. Thank you to Cllr Ian Dalton and resident Mick Wray for the enormous amount of their own time and hard work put into this project. Without them it would not have been possible. Continued on page 15

CHURCH HARVEST The Harvest was celebrated on Sunday 12th October, when the children of Stepping Stones contributed in their own particular way with their prayers and music. After the service we celebrated further with a soup and cheese lunch at the home of Anne Palmer. Thank you to Anne and Molly for preparing the lunch. We raised about £35 for Church funds. We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who helped to decorate the church for the Harvest Thanksgiving and to everyone who gave the produce and the young members of Stepping Stones who made such lovely covered boxes and distributed the harvest produce to senior citizens in the village.

25 HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE Home Safety tips, in association with Home Instead Senior Care, Wetherby and North Leeds. One of the biggest fears for elderly people is the thought of having a fall or an accident in the home. Falls can be very serious at any age but an elderly person may take far longer to recover from its effects. Whilst accidents do happen, many can be prevented. This month we share with you a few tips on how to make your home a safe haven and minimise the risk of having an unnecessary accident. Who Believe it or not more women than men have accidents in the home! What? Falling downstairs, tripping over loose tiles, flooring and left items. Suffering loss of balance after rising from a seated position too quickly or maybe having a dizzy spell. Slipping on wet floors, losing stability due to ill-fitting footwear. Why? There are all sorts of reasons why an accident occurs. Many are down to external factors in our environment that could be avoided with a little forward planning. Installing grip rails and sturdy bannisters, making sure areas of risk such as staircases are well lit, checking that flooring and equipment are up to standard and carrying out repairs before it’s too late. Be safe with fire, get a smoke alarm, test it regularly and always have an escape route planned. Avoid burns and scalds by not carrying very hot liquids, ensure your hot water bottle is of good quality and using rear hotplates on your cooker to prevent knocking a pan off the cooker. How? If you have a fall, how do you cope? Firstly don’t panic. If you are able to get up, do so very slowly, holding onto a firm object and putting a soft object under your knee if possible whilst you take the strain to stand up. Then sit down and rest a while. If you are hurt try to get comfortable until help arrives. Keep warm starting with feet and legs and try to move position regularly as this will improve your comfort. When? Accidents can occur all year round but in winter the elderly are particularly vulnerable. Hypothermia may not sound like an accident but it should be avoidable. Wear several layers of thin clothing, eat light regular meals and take drinks throughout the day. Make sure you move about regularly and don’t be afraid to contact your local gas and electric supplier to discuss any difficulties you may be experiencing with your bills.

27 BRAMHAM IN BLOOM NEW BENCH As you will probably have seen, there is a new bench at the top of Wetherby Road. It is made of recycled plastic for two reasons, it is environmentally friendly and also will require little if any maintenance. It now means that there is a circuit of benches from Bowcliffe Road back into the Village and residents can now take a walk in easy stages. The bench was funded by a grant from the Parish Council and installed by Leeds City Council.

AGM The AGM was held on the 21st October. There will be a full review in next months Parish Magazine.

33 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Remembrance Sunday this year is on Sunday 9th November. This day and the two minutes silence has been observed since the end of the 1st World War but their relevance remains undimmed. When we bow our heads in reflection we remember those who fought for freedom in the two World Wars but we also remember and honour those who lost their lives in more recent conflicts in Afghanistan and in acts of terror 9/11 and in London. The Remembrance Service in Bramham is an important occasion and you are invited to come to All Saints at 9.45 am to honour the fallen and to reflect on the urgent need to overcome violence and to build lasting peace. At the conclusion of the service we all walk to the War Memorial for the Act of Remembrance at 11.00 am. Please join us when Bramham participates in this solemn national event and people from various organisations lay their separate wreaths. In Flanders' fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place: and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders' fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe; To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high, If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders' Fields.

THE POPPY Over 40 million poppies are distributed by the Legion every year at the end of October and up to 11th November. Each and every poppy is a symbol of Remembrance and hope, and millions of people make the individual choice to wear one. The Royal British Legion was formed after the First World War which was hoped to be "the war to end all wars". But war and conflict have continued and today our Armed Forces are still experiencing casualties. The Legion will ensure that the memory of those who have given their lives in the Service of their Country, will continue and will be honoured - evermore.

Poppies will be on sale at various points in the village and in Church. Please give generously.

34 WERE YOU THERE? Did you see him? Were you there? Tall and handsome, Short blonde hair. In his serge Just like the rest No medals yet Upon his chest.

Charge their weapons As they were taught, to serve Share a tab To steady their nerve? Did he stand out As one of the best? When he stepped up To his final quest?

Was he alone there as he lay? Or with pals, side by side? Did you close his eyes Gently when he died? He was our son, Our future, our blood So few knew him Fewer would.

Did he smile As he passed you by? Did he nod As he caught your eye? Did he march proudly As though not a care? On that road To Flesquières

Did he have a chance Or fait accompli ? As they advanced How far could it be? Did you see him? Were you there? Did you see him fall? Was it too much to bear?

No miracle No saving grace No welcome home No sweetheart's embrace. Whole generations will now never be His line has gone And so has he.

Did he look weary? Had they walked for hours? Did they rest a while In fields of flowers? Did they shelter At the farm? Share their rations In stable or barn?

Did you hold his hand? Did you see him? Whisper a prayer? I was denied Or was there no time Were you there? As hope turned to despair? When our soldier died? Did you see him? Were you there? At 19 he gave his life We know not where. This poem was written by Dena Richards, Bramham To the memory of Private H. F. Myers, Northumberland Regiment Lost 27th October 1918

Thought for the Month Make happy those who are near and those who are far will come A Chinese proverb

A smile for November There once was a small town that was swarmed by wild squirrels. The squirrels made their home in the town's three churches. The three vicars all made efforts to remove the squirrels. At the end of the year, the vicars met up to compare their results. The first vicar spoke, "We still have squirrels, our faith believes that God will do as God see's fit...so we did nothing, putting the issue in our creators hands”. Unfortunately God did not see fit to remove the squirrels. They are still there and do not seem to be leaving. The second vicar spoke, "We have even more squirrels. God gives us challenges to overcome and make us stronger. So we fought the squirrels with traps, poisons, cats, but nothing worked. We have not yet found a way to conquer them. They have become more vicious and established in our building” The third vicar spoke, "Our squirrels are all gone, we just baptised and confirmed them and they all left. They only come back at Christmas and Easter."
