Clergy Letter from Rev’d Trish Anslow You cannot help but be aware, if you have ever heard me preach, that I used to be an infant teacher. There is a fund of examples of life in the classroom to use for prompting thoughts on life with or without the Gospel and I have used them unashamedly! In my street there is a young child who has just started school and I watch the to-ing and fro-ing as there is delivery to and from school. Life is hectic for the young family as they juggle to fit the routine of the school run into the already complicated schedule for two careers, nursery, afterschool clubs, shopping and general life. Of course, all I have to do is observe them, but many of you older readers will be part of these routines; child-minders, school taxi drivers and guardians of the slightly unwell children who ‘can’t manage school today’ or the such like. All of this is just an illustration of how busy life is in this modern world and it has set me thinking about how they fit in any quality time to talk about, or teach the gospel values to the young people in the family. The schools do their best to teach moral codes and introduce the rudiments of Christianity and other religions in the curriculum, but even in the excellent Christian ethos’ of the local Church schools there is nothing that beats the one to one teaching that comes from the family. As I said above, life is very hectic and some things get left out in the name of sanity, but I hope it isn’t the teaching of the building blocks of a fruitful and enriched Christian life.

Those of you who are in the wonderful position of caring for grandchildren for any length of time; one day a week, for part of the school holidays or just tea once in a while, are perhaps the luckiest of all in this scenario. You have time and the opportunity to gossip the gospel and teach some of its values to your young people. This may come in story time, bedtime or just those priceless moments of chatter. Make the most of it. Even those of you with the older grandchildren have the inbuilt plus-factor of your ‘special relationship’ to be able to ask them to indulge you in one-to-one chat time. They will listen to the fund of stories about your own childhood and there is the opportunity to give examples of those gospel values you grew up with. Those values are over 2000 years old and they will not have changed in the 50+ years since you were young! Give it a try. If you already do this with your family, remember to tell your friends you do it! They may need some hints as to how to go about it. Gossiping the Gospel in any quarter is a good thing and worth your time and effort. Go to it!

Rev Trish ANNUAL MEMORIAL SERVICE

For all who have died during the last year (and recent years) will be held at Walton Church on Sunday 17th November at 4.00 pm. Everyone welcome especially if you have recently lost a loved one.

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk

October 2013 Update ....communicating with residents

To all Bramham residents - Here is the update from our October Parish Council meeting and latest developments: Completion of the Option Agreement for the sale of strip of land: The Parish Council is very pleased to be able to report that we have received ÂŁ278,000 from Leeds City Council for the sale of the strip of land along the playing field. This is clearly a fantastic opportunity to invest in improvements for our village and we are committed to ensuring that this money is used for the benefit of Bramham and its residents. We are in the process of finalising a procedure for village groups and residents to put in an application for a share of the funds for village projects. We will also ensure that residents have the opportunity to let us know of any ideas they may have and to give their views on how they would like to see the funds distributed. This will take into account previous commitment regarding monies to compete the pavilion and also the laws regarding how Parish Councils can spend such money. Pavilion and Playing Field: At the time of writing we are still awaiting a response from the BSLA to the latest lease offered, and on the due diligence needed (quotes for works outstanding) to enable the Parish Council to pay the funds for completion of the pavilion. Both are needed under the terms of notice which is now at expiry. However our solicitor has been advised that the BSLA have now instructed new solicitors to deal with the proposed lease on their behalf and our solicitor expects to hear from them with comments shortly. Finalising the legal matters and completion of the pavilion remains a priority for the Parish Council and we will continue to update you with developments. Bramham in Bloom: The Parish Council offers its sincere congratulations to Ernest Nichols and his team on winning a silver gilt Yorkshire in Bloom award and receiving excellent comments from the judges. We are also delighted to hear that new volunteers have come forward to help to keep our village flower beds looking so lovely. Thank you to all concerned!

Parking in Low Way and High Street: Last month we reported that a joint Police / Parish Council letter would be sent to residents in these areas asking them to be considerate to others when parking vehicles. Following further resident complaints we are also contacting LCC Highways to see what can be done about parking by non residents. Bowcliffe Road surface: We are very aware of the poor state of Bowcliffe Road. Leeds City Council has filled in some of the potholes but we continue to press them for more permanent repairs.

External Audit: We are very pleased to report that the external audit of the Parish Council’s accounts found no issues to report. The Parish Council thanks the clerk to the Council (Marie Lynch) for the excellent work that has been done in this regard. Village Sign: The sign at the corner of Wetherby Road and Paradise Way has been taken down as the base was rotting. We expect this to be temporary, and once we have costs of repair / replacement we will decide future action. Next Meeting: The next Council meeting will be held on

Wednesday 6th November 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. Residents are welcome to join us. We hope you find this update useful. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Remembrance Sunday, the second Sunday in November, is the day traditionally put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. On this day people across the nation pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by our brave Service men and women. This will fall on Sunday 10th November this year. The Remembrance Service in Bramham is an important Village occasion and you are invited to come to All Saints at 9.45 am to honour the fallen and to reflect on the urgent need to overcome violence and to build lasting peace. At the conclusion of the service we walk to the War Memorial for the Act of Remembrance at 11am. Please join us on the 10th November when Bramham participates in this solemn national event. Sadly due to the current intensive operations, the names of many young men and women are being added to war memorials throughout the land. So on Remembrance Day we remember these people as well as those from the two great wars. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. Poppies will be on sale at various points in the village and in Church. Please give generously

17 BRAMHAM IN BLOOM YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM JUDGES COMMENTS The whole of their comments will be put on the website so here is just a brief summary. As already reported the result was a Silver Gilt Award. This is a very good entry and the committee of 4 and all the many enthusiastic and dedicated gardeners are to be congratulated. Of great interest was the time spent at All Saints Church where the grass is cut periodically, helping to conserve both Flora and Fauna. The enthusiasm of the children and staff during the all too brief visit to the Primary School was infectious, as was their understanding and acknowledgement of environmental issues. Villagers greeted the judges at the War Memorial and Senior Citizens Centre Congratulations are also due for a very descriptive brochure. Whilst it is difficult to pick out any specific areas The Community Garden, The Ramp Bed, Bowcliffe Corner, The Senior Citizens Centre deserve comment. The absence of litter and dog fouling was very evident. This is only a very small part of their report so please look on the website where you will also see a copy of our Brochure. Bramham in Bloom Committee

19 FOLLY ALLOTMENTS, ABERFORD ROAD, BRAMHAM “ I came, I seed, I planted”

…..Quote Abel & Cole.

Bramham village is very fortunate in having an allotment site which was given in trust by the Bramham Park Estate at the time of the First World War, for use by village residents in those times of hardship. The allotments have continued in use since then but, currently, there are a number of vacant plots which are available to be taken on, ideally, by residents of Bramham who are over the age of 18. Anyone wishing to be considered for a vacant plot or a partial plot should initially contact: Paul Marshall (Secretary) telephone (01937 844767) or by email at phmpm@sky.com Allotments will be assigned on a first come first served basis and a waiting list will be formed if demand exceeds availability. Some of the allotments will require hard work initially, but help and advice will be offered by other friendly plot holders eager to support newcomers and those with little gardening experience. Tending an allotment is a very rewarding leisure activity which ‘reaps’ many benefits. So please come and join us ….. your enthusiasm, friendship and energy will be very much appreciated and welcomed! Paul Marshall

BRAMHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS Beer Festival 2013 As this item goes to press the committee have been undertaking the final preparations for the 2013 Beer Festival. We wish to thanks all the sponsors and supporters for helping make this the biggest of our fundraising events each year and we hope that 2013 proves to be no different to previous years. Bookings for 2014 The months of September through to December have seen the hall booked up most weekends, and in some instances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The diary is now open for 2014 and we already have several bookings, so if you would like to hold your event at the hall, please contact the bookings secretary to check availability and prices on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com. Forthcoming Village Hall fund raising events 25th January – Burns Night Ceilidh with live Ceilidh Band Fiddlers Wreck – this was a great success last year and is back by popular demand. Do you have spare time........? .... to help the Committee with funding applications (which can involve multiple form filling), or to help manage the bookings diary, or to help unlocking the hall for occasional users, or just to lend a spare pair of hands, or suggest new fundraising ideas? The committee comprises volunteers from within the Village, many of whom also have full time jobs across Yorkshire, so we are always looking for extra help. If you have any time to spare and would like to get involved, please contact Stewart Gibson or Christine Suddaby on the numbers shown below. 100 club Membership is open for people to join throughout the year and forms are available from committee, and via the Village website (www.thisisbramham.co.uk). For just £10 per year you have the chance of winning prizes 4 times each year, and all the money is ploughed back into the restoration plans for the hall. The Village Hall can be booked by phone or text on 07432 330972 or by email on bramhamvillagehallbookings@gmail.com . Committee can be contacted via Stewart Gibson on 01937 845084 or Christine Suddaby on 01937 849455, or by post via Bramham Village Hall, Low Way, Bramham LS23 6QT. 10th Anniversary Celebration Established in October 2003, funded by Leeds City Council Adult Social Care and run by a small team of staff, dedicated trustees and over 120 volunteers, Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) has improved the quality of life for many local elderly people during the past 10 years. With the increase in number of the elderly population, the charity has adapted and grown to meet new challenges, and WiSE now delivers a wide range of community based activities, information, help and support. Services include a Carers Support Group, two Memory Cafés plus a Gardening and Befriending service. In January this year, the WiSE Owl Café for the Community opened, in Boston Spa Village Hall, providing a vibrant, safe and welcome environment to meet and eat. To mark its anniversary, on Tuesday 1st October, the charity held a day of music and celebration at The Methodist Hall, Wetherby. WiSE members and supporters came together to celebrate the charity’s many achievements. Councillor Tom Murray, Lord Mayor of Leeds and his wife the Lady Mayoress were also in attendance to show their support. For further information about WiSE, please visit www.w-ise.org.uk

The Great Boston Bake Off - hosted by the Wise Owl Cafe

On Tuesday 24th September, at Boston Spa Village Hall, WiSE held the Great Boston Bake Off. With three categories and many delicious entries, judges Duncan Wood, from ITV’s Calendar and Robin Wraith, Head Chef at Martin House, had a difficult task in choosing their favourites! Three worthy winners were finally chosen, each winning afternoon tea for two at the WiSE Owl Café. The winners were:fruit based – Sheila Whitaker with her pineapple fruit cake chocolate based – Crystal with her chocolate and Guiness cake sponge based – Josie Armitage with her lemon drizzle cake The overall winner was Crystal with her chocolate and Guiness cake and she also received a lovely bottle of champagne for her efforts. WiSE would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part - it was a fantastic afternoon and we raised £175 for Martin House Children’s Hospice, an amazing amount. The WiSE Owl Café is open each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10.00am to 4.00pm. To see a sample menu, please visit; www.w-ise.org.uk

33 BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND The Bramham Community Fund exists to distribute the money generated by Festival Republic from the sale of residents’ tickets at the Leeds Festival together with any other donations made directly by the promoter. The requirement is that funds are to be used for the benefit of the community of Bramham. Since the Leeds Festival moved to Bramham in 2003, the Fund has allocated grants to a value of over £230,000. Invitations are now invited from community organisations who think that they might have appropriate needs from this year’s contributions. You should be aware that in the past preference in the allocation of grants has been given to capital projects rather than funding the ongoing support of existing activities. Applications cannot be accepted from individuals, commercial organisations or for projects which do not benefit residents of Bramham. To keep it simple, there is no formal application form. Just write to the Bramham Community Fund c/o Colin Pool at 7 Prospect Bank, LS23 6RS (or send an email to colin.pool@empiconsulting.co.uk) to arrive no later than 1st December saying what you would like a grant for, how much and why. The Fund committee under the chairmanship of Nick Lane Fox is expected to meet in late December or early January to consider the applications. Colin Pool

STEPPING STONES Stepping Stones at the new time and venue is continuing to grow in popularity. It was our second meeting this month. This month with Harvest Festival in mind, the children listened to and took part in a discussion about sharing food. The children worked really hard decorating hampers to be filled with food after the Harvest Festival service and delivered to elderly residents in Bramham. This year we filled over 30 hampers! The older children helped write a prayer for the Harvest Festival Service, and they all stood up and read extracts from the prayer during the service. The children attending the Harvest Festival Service read out their special prayer, which they had written at the Stepping Stones session the Friday before. This helped them to relate the prayer with giving and sharing, with the Harvest Boxes they had decorated. After the service, they helped deliver the boxes to members of the village, which were appreciated by the recipients. These boxes would not exist without the fantastic donations of food and home baking by Bramham villagers. A big thank you to you all. Anything non-perishable is appreciated. It doesn’t have to be once a year, the food bank at the back of the Church is in use helping people make ends meet. Next month’s Stepping Stones is on Friday 8th November, 5.30pm at the Church. The theme will be Remembrance, which given the current situation in Afghanistan, Britain’s servicemen and women, need to be in our thoughts at this time. There is a Remembrance Service on Sunday 10th Nov which starts at earlier time of 9.45 followed by a short service at the War Memorial. Stepping Stones is open to all, regardless of whether you attend church or not, it is simply a way of meeting other families. For further information please contact Emma Hunter on emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com or Lisa Revolta on Lisa@lisarevolta.com or Jennie Saynor on jen@saynor.me.uk. Letter to the Editor from Mrs Doreen Darley Please thank the children who decorated the Harvest Basket and delivered it to me. It was lovely. Thank you for thinking of me.

Thought for the Month

THERES ALWAYS A WAY! According to a news report, a certain private school in Newcastle upon Tyne was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints. Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back. Finally the Headmistress decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the cleaner who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little Geordie Princesses). To demonstrate how difficult it was to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required. He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it. Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror. There are teachers............and then there are educators!!
