Clergy Letter from Rev’d Andy Grant By the time you read this clergy letter, the clearing up operation at Bramham Park following Leeds Festival should be complete, and estate life returned to some semblance of normality (bar the mud I imagine). I am told it takes 6 weeks after the end of the festival to achieve this, and having seen the immensity of the set up, the sheer scale of the operation, the thousands who attended, the deluge of litter, abandoned tents, and stray personal possessions, this does not surprise me in the slightest. It was my great privilege this year to be invited by Revd Andy Nicholson, Vicar from nearby Thorner and Scholes, to join the volunteers who for the past few years have been running the ‘Festival Angels’ prayer tent. This tent, staffed by volunteers 24 hours a day for six days and nights over the festival period, provides a challenging and unique opportunity for Christian ministry. Tea and coffee are sold to the festival goers at a very fair price, and biscuits are provided free. Prayer, conversation and/or a simple listening ear is offered to those who wish for it. During the festival the weather of course took a serious turn for the worse. When the first rain storm hit, the prayer tent filled with people in minutes. Teas and coffees were frantically being served to an ever increasing queue of desperate festival goers, soaked to the skin and in need of a hot drink. Soon, questions were being fired at us (in a friendly manner) regarding our Christian faith, and we became engrossed in dialogue, offering answers to some very deep and searching questions.

Some became emotional, others wanted prayer, and one couple asked me for a blessing having just got engaged moments before. Some of our ‘guests’ who used the prayer tent were drunk, some had taken drugs, yet in a spirit of Christian acceptance and love, we ministered to them free of judgement and condemnation. I remember one young man in particular who said to me, what an amazing thing it was to have a prayer tent in the middle of Leeds Festival. Despite the noise, the rain, and the crowd of people squeezed into the prayer tent, this man described our tent as a place of peace and refuge. Outside the rain was hammering down, and the noise of the thousands of young people screaming, trying to get out of the wet, was deafening. But this young man found solace in our tent, in the midst of chaos! Psalm 46 verse 1 says ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble’. Whether one is trying to find some peace in a noisy and soggy festival, or retreat from the noise, activity, and pressures of life in general, we can find God’s peace in the stillness and quiet of wherever we happen to be at any given moment. That is the reality of knowing that God is everywhere, and able to give us his peace at anytime and in any place.

Revd Andy Grant

5 THE CHURCHYARD Thanks to a marvellous group of people, the Churchyard has been cut again. More than 250 hours of voluntary work has been expended mowing, strimming, raking and tidying up the entire Churchyard. We have managed to clear as much grass and rubbish away from the gravestones as possible. However, there is a big problem with old wreaths and faded plastic flowers, plastic and shiny paper and toys and florist wire which during the year have blown around the churchyard - this is a great hazard for the machinery. The Team have done their best to clear away most of this debris but WE DO REGRET NOT MAKING IT ABSOLUTELY CLEAR THAT WE WOULD BE TAKING AWAY DEAD AND FADED FLOWERS. However, we are extremely concerned to learn that after our final session, somebody has cleared away almost all the artificial flowers, including those on the Ashes Garth and we would like to stress that this was not done by the Team. We would like to remind you that there are precise rules covering the Churchyard and an up-to-date notice is now on the Churchyard gates outlining all the details. Over the past few years this has been allowed to slip. We now intend to draw the relative’s attention to the Churchyard Rules whenever there is a burial in Bramham Churchyard. We have such a beautiful Churchyard, and many of you had told us how lovely it looks now, which is very much appreciated and we hope that with your help we will be able to maintain the tidiness at the East end of the Churchyard. The West end we intend to keep well cut throughout the year and the middle section will be allowed to go wild again until the August cut to allow the wild flowers to live and encourage the wildlife. Thank you again to all the hard working Team for the time they spent this summer to tidy up the Churchyard. Thank you also to all the people who have taken the opportunity to tidy up their families' graves since the Churchyard has been cut. This is a tremendous help. Thank You. We are grateful to Richard Gill from Leeds City Council Floral Initiative for supplying daffodils to be planted in the Churchyard this Autumn, but we will need help with the planting. If you are able to help please contact the Churchwardens or a member of the Church Council who will give you more details of where and when they can be planted. Anne Palmer

September 2013 Update ....communica ng with residents

To all Bramham residents Here is the update from our September Parish Council meeting: Option Agreement for the sale of strip of land: The Parish Council is delighted to report that Leeds City Council is now exercising the option agreement whereby they buy a strip of land along the playing field to allow for future widening of Freely Lane should Bramham House be developed. This means that the Parish Council will receive £278,000. Clearly this is a considerable amount of money which will be of great benefit to Bramham. Careful consideration will be given to how this is spent and we will be devising a process for village groups to submit applications. The Parish Council has previously agreed to ring fence £58,000 to complete the pavilion, and £50,000 to be returned to the Community Fund. Spend will also be subject to legislation regarding what Parish Councils can lawfully spend money on, and how it should go about it. Pavilion and Playing Field: In July we reported that we had not had a response from the BSLA since offering them a lease in April, and had therefore given them 3 months notice that if the lease is not accepted, the option agreement not exercised, and the due diligence requirements not met, the Parish Council would take over the pavilion. Following this decision our solicitor was contacted by the BSLA’s solicitor with a number of queries on the proposed lease, which have now been responded to. The notice period ends mid October. Please help to keep Bramham’s flower beds blooming! Bramham in Bloom does a fantastic job with our village’s flowerbeds and displays, but it needs help urgently. Please don’t assume that someone else will put their hand up. However little you can help, all offers will be much appreciated. Without more volunteers Bramham in Bloom will not continue as it does today. Contact Ernest Nichols on 841195. Parking in Low Way and High Street: Residents reported problems with inconsiderate parking and we have taken this up with our Community Police. A joint Police / Parish Council letter will be sent to residents in these areas asking them to be considerate to others. A Walk in the Park! Councillor Martin Batt has been working with Nick Lane Fox to open new circular walk in Bramham Park. The opening walk will be on 19th October. See the separate notice in this magazine or on our website (see below). Continued on page 11

Improve broadband speeds! Superfast West Yorkshire is a project set up to increase broadband speeds. If Bramham is to benefit we need as many of you as possible to register with them. You can do this on www.superfastwestyorkshire.co.uk or via the link on the news item about broadband on the Parish Council’s website (see below). Leeds Festival Update: This year over 500 Bramham residents were able to enjoy three days of music, entertainment, guest facilities and local transport at Leeds Festival and all for £14 a day! Resident feedback has been that despite the rainstorms and “mudfest” everyone was able to thoroughly enjoy being part of the 80,000 crowd in our local park. The resident shuttle bus unfortunately let us down on Sunday afternoon but a replacement bus company was drafted in to enable residents to be transported to and from the park for the final day of the festival. We also understand that some residents experienced issues with road blocks on the road from Thorner to Bramham late on Sunday evening and this resulted in the resident bus not running smoothly from the village to the park and some residents walking home. Attending any major event with thousands of spectators will of course cause some delays on the roads and the weather has certainly been an additional challenge for the organisers this year. No doubt they will be looking at further improvements for next year. If you have any feedback about the weekend’s events please drop us an e-mail so that we can collate messages and feedback any issues that have affected residents to both Festival Republic and Leeds City Council. The resident ticket monies have been collated and handed to the Community Fund that is chaired by Nick Lane Fox and we look forward to seeing what village projects will benefit from the funds raised when the committee meets in December. We are lucky to receive guest tickets here in Bramham enabling so many residents to be part of one of the biggest music festivals in the UK. A final big thank you to Councillor Fiona Henderson for countless hours of hard work to make this happen. Next Meeting: The next Council meeting will be held on Wednesday 2 October, 7.30 pm in the Senior Citizens’ Centre. Residents are welcome to join us. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM 2013 Silver Gilt Again Two of our group attended the Yorkshire in Bloom Presentation Lunch at York Race Course on the 16th September and were delighted to be presented with another Silver Gilt for Bramham. Silver Gilt indicates that Bramham was regarded as significantly above average, of course it is! There were over 400 people at the presentation, all working enthusiastically and voluntarily for their respective towns and villages and we were proud to be part of it, so lets hope we can continue to be so. As we have mentioned before this is an award for the Village as a whole and not just Bramham in Bloom, in fact it was emphasized at the Presentation that the floral side is only a small part of how the award is obtained. The judges look at many aspects and if you look on the Bramham web site you will see the brochure which we prepare for the judges showing all the criteria that we are judged under. Since last month we have received a number of offers for more help, so here’s looking forward to 2014. Bramham in Bloom Committee

BRAMHAM IN BLOOM AGM 22nd October 7.30 pm in the Village Hall Supper Room. Bramham Neighbourhood Plan Steering Committee

WE NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! Proposed Housing Development – meeting Thursday 3rd October – 7.30pm Village Hall Supper Room The Neighbourhood Plan Steering committee recently issued a ‘doordrop’ to get your views on Leeds City Council’s proposed development sites for housing development, retail, employment and green space, including a potential site of 3,000 houses at Spen Common Lane. We did not receive as many responses as we would have hoped for, but of the responses we received, the vast majority oppose the Spen Common Lane site, and we therefore sought Parish Council approval to formally oppose the site. This has been given. You can still let us know your views either via the website www.bramham.org.uk, or by contacting me. This issue and others will be discussed at the open meeting 3 October, at which Ward Councillor John Proctor and MP Alec Shelbrook will be present. Please come along to hear the latest update, give us your views, and ask any questions.

MONDAY CLUB At the last meeting we had an enjoyable afternoon with Sue and George and their Accordions. Their entertainment included a sing-a-long, which was enjoyed by all. We send our good wishes to Betty Woodcock who is presently in hospital and send good wishes to Joyce and Gerald Oxlade who have moved to Ilkley. We hope they will enjoy their new life.

The next meeting is on Monday 7th October at 1.30 pm We would love to have some more people coming along to the Monday Club. This club is for all senior citizens in Bramham who are bored with afternoons at home, who would like the opportunity to talk and mix with other likewise people, and enjoy home made refreshments. We try and arrange a varied programme which includes two lunch outings a year. Why not come along and give it a try? We would be very happy to see you. If you have difficulty in walking to the Village Hall a lift can be arranged.

GREAT TUNES ALL NIGHT PRIZES TO BE WON COME ALONG AND JOIN THE FUN

GET THERE EARLY – IT GETS BUSY! FOOD BANKS NEED OUR SUPPORT Thousands of people regularly go hungry because they have not enough money to make ends meet. They face impossible choices between eating and heating, feeding their children or paying the rent or the mortgage. Food banks provide responsive emergency relief with a pack of 3 days balanced food. The food banks are run by volunteers who work in collaboration with medical staff, social workers and other caring services. As times get tougher the number of food banks is increasing. Our nearest food bank is at Acomb in York and we shall provide containers in Bramham Church for you to provide items of food. They will then be taken weekly to the food bank. The Church is usually open Friday mornings from 8.30 am, or on a Sunday morning. The following are the items sought: Milk (uht or powdered) Sugar, Fruit Juice (carton),Soup, Pasta Sauces, Tinned Puddings, Pasta, Tinned Fruit, Tinned Meat and Fish, Tea bags, Instant Coffee, Jam, Biscuits. As you go shopping remember the food bank and buy some item to put in the container in Bramham Church. Your generosity will be much appreciated. Rev’d Stanley Menzies

STEPPING STONES We started the new term back at Discoverers in September with a change of name, a change in venue and a change of day! We are now called Stepping Stones, and meet in All Saints Church at 5.30pm on the Friday before the Family Service (which is the 2nd Sunday of the month). This month we started our session with a delicious fish and chip supper (and polished off nearly a whole bottle of ketchup between us!). The craft activity the children completed was linked to the previous week's Family Service where they were thinking about following in Jesus's footsteps and following rules. They discussed starting back at school and why we have rules and that sometimes it is difficult to keep to them. All the children then decorated footprints and included words such as, 'follow', 'try hard' and 'persevere'. These are now on display in the Church. The children also learned about Haymanot (our sponsored child), who lives in Ethiopia and has a very different life from us. Reverend Andy then talked to the children about following Jesus, and everyone made a small trip around the church. They started at the font where they spoke about baptism which is the start of our journey as followers of Jesus. They then walked to the cross and spoke about God's forgiveness, saying sorry and forgiving others which is part of what we do when we follow Jesus. Finally they went to the altar which was lit up by candles. We spoke about Jesus being the light of the world who shows us the way to go in life. We ended by saying the Lord's Prayer together. Next months Stepping Stones will be on the 11th October, at 5.30pm in the church. We will be decorating harvest boxes ready for harvest festival at the family service the following Sunday (13th Oct, 10am). We really hope you can join us for a busy afternoon of fun, sticking, tea and biscuits! Please bring with you one adult sized shoe box (or two) covered in plain paper or tin foil which can be decorated by the children. Stepping stones is open to all, regardless of whether you attend church or not, it is simply a way of meeting other families. For further information please contact Emma Hunter on emmaandpaul8@hotmail.com or Lisa Revolta on Lisa@lisarevolta.com or Jennie Saynor on jen@saynor.me.uk

Thought for the Month

WHY PARENTS DRINK... The boss wondered why one of his most valued employees was absent but had not phoned in sick one day. Needing to have an urgent problem solved with one of the main computers he dialled the employee's home phone number and was greeted with a child's whisper. “HELLO? 'Is your daddy home?' he asked. “YES” whispered the small voice. ‘May I talk with him?' The child whispered, “NO” Surprised and wanting to talk with an adult, the boss asked, 'Is your Mummy there?' “YES” 'May I talk with her?' Again the small voice whispered, “NO” Hoping there was somebody with whom he could leave a message, the boss asked, 'Is anybody else there?' “YES A POLICEMAN” whispered the child. Wondering what a cop would be doing at his employee's home, the boss asked, 'May I speak with the policeman?' “NO HE’S BUSY” whispered the child. 'Busy doing what?' “TALKING TO DADDY AND MUMMY AND THE FIREMAN” came the whispered answer. Growing more worried as he heard a loud noise in the background through the earpiece on the phone, the boss asked, 'What is that noise?' “A HELICOPTER” answered the whispering voice. 'What is going on there?' demanded the boss, now truly apprehensive. Again, whispering, the child answered. “THE SEARCH TEAM JUST LANDED A HELICOPTER” Alarmed, concerned and a little frustrated the boss asked, 'What are they searching for?' Still whispering, the young voice replied with a muffled giggle... “ME”
