3 Clergy Letter from Rev’d Andy Grant The referendum is over and we are now reflecting on the outcome of the Scottish independence vote. Of course I am writing this letter two weeks prior to the vote; always a tricky undertaking trying to write about an event that hasn’t happened at the time of writing, but has taken place at the point of publication and distribution! From where I am sitting now, the vote is going to be very close, and from where you are sitting now, the vote has taken place and a sizeable groups of Scots are disappointed, lamenting the result, whilst the other ‘side’ are celebrating. The run up to the vote has been heated, passionate, and sadly at times, unpleasant. Scot has been pitched against Scot, whilst the rest of the UK has had to sit and watch from the side lines. The whole debate has exposed a growing fragility regarding our union with Scotland, but also forced underlying disunity amongst Scots to the surface in a very public debate. Whatever the outcome, Scotland will need to heal as a nation having been split on an issue that has hit right at the very heart of her identity. Human unity, whether within the context of marriage, or family, at a community level, or at a national level is conditional and prone to multiple pressures and change. Human unity can be fragile at all levels and is never absolute in terms of its permanence and longevity. Some marriages sadly end, families can fall apart all too easily, communities can be split on local issues, nations within a union like the UK can opt to explore the
possibility of independence (even if relations between home nations are relatively good), and in doing so, find that disunity emerges within that country itself. From a Christian perspective, human disunity finds its source in the capacity of all of us as human beings to think and function from a state of imperfection or ‘sin’. The resultant fragmentation affects all our relationships, first and foremost with God, with each other, and within ourselves. This disunity cannot be repackaged as ‘diversity’; this is a pitiful veneer when used in this way. Human disunity is serious and drives hard against the desire of God to see humanity living ‘as one’ in peace, love and cooperation. Disunity causes fracture at all levels of human society right up to the international scene. Political attempts to unify the world (or parts of it at least) are fraught with multiple complexities that can easily break down. True lasting unity can only be realised ‘in Christ’ and this unity functions at the deepest level of humanity; within the heart, soul and mind. This unity is one that any follower of Christ must grow into – it is not simple system that God has dumped on the world as a single fixed entity that humans must adhere to. True and complete human unity will be realised in the future, not by political means or any other human method, but by the manifestation and final coming of God’s Kingdom on earth. In the meantime, all are called to follow Christ, to love God, to love each other, to grow in love and enjoy a foretaste of that unity that we can know in part now, and enter into fully when Christ comes to reign again. Rev Andy Grant

Stepping Stones September’s Stepping Stones was the first one of the school year. It was lovely to see some of the children in their new school uniforms having just joined their school’s reception class. Reverend Andy told the story of Nicodemus who came to Jesus at night because he was anxious yet fascinated by the amazing things Jesus had been doing. He knew this young teacher (Jesus) was special because no one could do these amazing things apart from the presence and power of God. Nicodemus learned that he must be born again, to become a full and real child of God and find eternal life. Andy helped the children understand this by asking them to form a circle and then by playing Jesus, opening the circle to allow Nicodemus (played by Ben) to enter heaven. It is worth noting that later on after Jesus’s death, Nicodemus together with his friend Joseph of Arimathea lovingly cared for the body of Jesus, placing it in Joseph's tomb. Nicodemus’s story is a model of faith and courage for all Christians to follow. During the craft session entitled; Jesus meeting Nicodemus, the children drew Jesus and Nicodemus (there were also two aliens and Peppa Pig!) and stuck them on a on a banner which was subsequently paraded around the Church at the Family Service the following Sunday!. We will add more characters from the bible in the future.... to show the people that Jesus met ‘on the road’. The Stepping Stones children attend Bramham, Boston Spa (St Mary’s and Primrose Lane) and Thorp Arch schools. More children are attending, and these sessions are becoming increasingly popular. The theme for Stepping Stones is always linked to the Family Service the following Sunday – these services are very relaxed and child friendly, the children can have as much involvement as they like. 9 NADFAS CHURCH RECORD After two years research and compiling the NADFAS Church Record of All Saints’ Church Bramham is now complete. The Leeds Society of NADFAS have produced a detailed record of all the furnishings inside the church. This will be presented to Bramham on Sunday 2nd November 10.00am Service and there is an invitation to everyone interested to attend. The Leeds Society has had a great deal of advice and help from people in the village and we hope that we have gathered together as much information as possible. One volume of the Record is kept in Church, a second goes to the Victoria & Albert Museum, a third to the National Archives at Swindon, a fourth is presented to the Diocese of York and the fifth and final copy is sent to NADFAS House in London. Over 1700 Records have been produced in the UK and the Leeds Society has completed 11. The Record has many uses, for example in the event of damage or theft of any item the Police and Insurance Companies have to hand an accurate account of every item, the dimensions together with a photograph, and any special inscription has been recorded. Should a stained glass window be broken then the manufacturer can replace any damage. It is important to record the artistic heritage within our churches. G. E. Kirk produced a History of the Church in 1936 and we have referred to this booklet many times. We now have an up to date inventory of everything in the Church. Do come along and see the Record, many of the items have been photographed and we hope you will appreciate the finished copy. NADFAS Societies are found all over the UK and many in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. If you would like more information
please contact Anne Palmer.

11 CRIME PREVENTION PANEL NEWSLETTER Dark nights are looming ... Beat the Burglar with ABS TS 007 3* Anti-Snap Cylinders October is National Home Security Month in the UK. Crime statistics show that burglaries increase by up to 20% when the clocks change, as thieves make the most of the darker evenings. Door cylinder snapping & bumping is on the rise. With everyday tools a burglar can get past a standard door cylinder in less than 10 seconds. 90% of all uPVC and composite doors in the UK and Ireland have euro profile locks which could be snapped, bumped and picked in seconds, leaving your home, possessions - and car, in the hands of an opportunist thief. The ABS TS 007 3* lock is the only lock that has unique built in Snap Secure technology that ensures that if the door is attacked the cylinder will snap from the outside but it will also block off access to the internal mechanism of the door lock. The most important thing is that ABS cylinders are very competitively priced and you don't have to change the complete lock, just the cylinder, it is very easy to do and takes just a few minutes. TOGETHER WE CAN BEAT THE BURGLAR !! B U T only if you ensure you have locked ALL your doors, gates, and windows. Secured your ladders out of sight. Removed loose items from your vehicle and lock it. Remembering to place your vehicle and household keys away out of sight. Use random timer switches for your table lamps in at least two rooms. Especially if you leave home early in the morning and do not return until later in the evening. Check your outside lights are working properly and placed high enough so that they cannot be tampered with. ABS - Official Sponsors of Neighbourhood Watch If you wish to report an incident to the police please dial 1 0 1. The 9 9 9 emergency number should only be used if a crime is being committed there and then or if there is a danger to life. Maureen Brewer, Chair. Wetherby & District Crime Prevention Panel

September 2014 Update ....communica ng with residents
To all Bramham residents:
Bramham in Bloom Gold Award! Congratulations! What a fantastic achievement by Ernest Nicholls and the Bramham in Bloom team. A well deserved Gold award! Congratulations to you all from the Parish Council, and thank you for all of the hard work that goes into keeping Bramham looking lovely.
Bramham Community Fund Nick Lane Fox, Chair of the Community Fund Committee, has very kindly agreed to come along to the October Parish Council meeting to discuss any queries and listen to views residents might have regarding how the Community Fund operates. For this reason we have booked the supper room in the Village Hall and the meeting on the 1st of October will start at 7.30pm. Please do come along and share your views. Festival and Community Fund: We have had another fantastic festival and the Council wishes to thank Melvin Benn of Festival Republic for the tremendous perk of hugely discounted guest tickets for residents. Cllr Fiona Henderson again took the lead on administering the tickets – many hours of hard work, so many thanks to Fiona and to the team of volunteers who kindly came forward to deliver the tickets. Annual Newsletter: The newsletter is usually issued around June, but as there was so much going on in the village at that time we decided to issue it a little later so that it could include updates from that time. Thank you to all of the groups who contributed an annual update and to Gill Young and her team for delivering it alongside the September Parish Magazine. It really is a fantastic reminder of how much goes on in Bramham! Bramham Calendar: The Council is pleased to sponsor a page in the Bramham Calendar and thanks Gill Young and Stanley Menzies and their team for producing it again this year. It is a lovely way to raise funds for the Church. Continued on page 15

15 Parish Council Report - Continued from page 13
Pavilion: Tenders to complete the internal and external works have been received. Costs are higher than expected and further discussions are taking place to assess them. Senior Citizens Centre: We have often been asked about improving the Senior Citizens’ Centre by adding running water and a toilet. We commissioned a structural survey of the building to make sure that before any funds are spent on it the building is sound. We are pleased to report that it is, and we are now looking into the feasibility and cost of improvements. Next Meeting: Next meeting is Wednesday 1 October, 7.30 pm in The Village Hall Supper Room. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website www.thisisbramham.co.uk. 200 Years of Mahogany at the Linton Antique Society For the second year running, furniture historian Dr Adam Bowett opens the Linton Antique Society’s new season of talks at the Linton Memorial Hall on Thursday 9th October at 7.30pm. This time, he focuses on that most highly-regarded furniture wood, mahogany. Now under threat of extinction, this once-abundant timber transformed British furniture-making in the 18th and 19th centuries and became the benchmark by which other timbers were judged. Adam will trace the origins of the mahogany trade, its development and its impact on furniture-making. He also reveals the vital role played by economics, war and colonial policy in shaping not only the trade but the history of British furniture. Now is the time to join the Society: annual membership is just £20.00 which covers entry to all seven talks this season and the opportunity to join members’ outings to places of interest. Contact Mrs Barbara Hepburn on 01937 582243 to join or download the form on the Society’s website www.lintonantiquesociety.org.uk Non-members are also welcome to the talk: entrance £5.00 on the door. The next talk Treasures of the National Trust is on 13th November at 8.00pm

Become a WiSE Volunteer Due to the success of our WiSE Owl Café in Boston Spa, we are currently in need of additional people to help serve our lovely customers and to bake cakes for us. We would also welcome volunteer befrienders and drivers for our recently introduced transport scheme. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, use hidden talents and gain valuable work experience. You will also make a real difference to the lives of local people. If you think you can help us and would like to find out more, please call 01937 588994 and ask to speak to Neil Bellamy or alternatively email info@w-ise.org.uk.
May we take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped to make Bramham Ball 2014 such a success, and has enabled us to raise £15,000 this year (nearly double the 2013 figure!) for our 3 chosen charities of Martin House Children’s Hospice, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Macmillan Ward at Harrogate & District Hospital. We are aware of some issues with the quality of the catering this year and offer our apologies for this. We thank all those who were kind enough to take time to give feedback, and we have passed this through to the caterers. Having raised £23,000 in 2 years for charity, Bramham Ball is taking a well-deserved break in 2015 but will be back bigger and stronger in 2016! Thank you all very much for your support. Nick Hall

25 BRAMHAM COMMUNITY FUND When the Leeds Festival first came to Bramham Park, we felt that the local communities should also benefit from it and in the spring of 2003, Melvin Benn, the promoter, offered to give some free tickets for the youth of the Village. It was agreed that there should be a small charge and that the village could keep the proceeds and spend them on Community projects. Melvin also agreed to make a further donation from charitable funds raised at the Festival and to-date this has been over 1/3rd of the funds distributed. Because of the limitations of how money can be spent by Parish Councils, and the fact that these funds would have to be included in the Council’s accounts, it was agreed that a separate Bramham Community Fund should be created, in which the Council could only ever have minority participation. The initial members of the committee were Nick & Rachel Lane Fox, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Council. To these were added independent members suggested by the Council - Bob Moorcroft and Ian Watson. At that time, Bob was a former councillor and the Council’s internal auditor and Ian was a former clerk and secretary to the Parish Plan Working Group. Colin Pool was asked to be a nonvoting secretary/administrator. All of these appointments were agreed with Melvin. The objective of the Fund is generally to support community projects and these must benefit the residents of Bramham. The Fund does not support commercial activities or private individuals. Melvin’s plan was that the arrangement should be as informal as possible, with a minimum of red tape – to provide grants to community groups, based in Bramham, where the recipients could say “We got that because of the Leeds Festival”. The committee only recommends the grants to Melvin for his approval. The list of grants awarded has always been published in the Parish Magazine (and since its inception, the Annual Report). No details of unsuccessful applicants, nor the reasons for rejection have been put in the public domain, but every unsuccessful applicant has been advised of their circumstances. Including the grants detailed below, the Community Fund has awarded £248,147 since its inception. After serving for some years, Ian Watson decided to step down and the committee recommended to Melvin that he be replaced by Anne Palmer. Later, the Council nominated Michael Rhodes to deputise for an absent Council member at one meeting and Melvin agreed that he should become a member. The committee has met annually from 2003 with a calling notice placed in the Parish Magazine and the meeting taking place in late December/early January. However in December 2013, the Parish Council had started its own grant scheme and it became clear that there was a widespread misunderstanding about the running of the two schemes in parallel. Accordingly, the position was discussed with Melvin who agreed that the Community Fund meeting should be deferred until after the Council had made its announcement about successful grant applications. 29 YORKSHIRE IN BLOOM AWARD 2014 Tuesday 16th September at The Knavesmire, York Racecourse, Attended by Gill Young, Paul and Lynn Marshall Great excitement among all who gathered for the Award Ceremony. The proceedings started with a welcome from the Chairman of Yorkshire in Bloom. The presenter began announcing winners from many categories, one of which was Category 1C Large Village. Loud applause ensued when the Gold Winners were announced … Bramham had been awarded a Gold Rose Award! How wonderful for our village! The Judge’s comments were as follows … firstly, they particularly complimented the Primary School, children and staff on their warm welcome and the maturity and politeness of the children. Their enthusiasm and knowledge was so evident when discussing their vegetable garden with the judges. Secondly, the Church was clearly an important part of the community, the grounds and flower troughs being beautifully maintained. Thank you to all our new sponsors on Front Street who cared for their new hanging baskets during the summer months. T he se w er e a lso commented on. Bowcliffe Corner, The Jubilee Garden, the Senior Citizens’ Centre, the Red Lion baskets were all mentioned as areas where the community shows pride in their environment. We were very proud to accept the award on behalf of our Village in recognition of the year’s work by the Bramham in Bloom gardeners, our sponsors and everyone who helps in any way in caring for our community. Although the Plan cannot be progressed formally in advance of Leeds City Council’s emerging plan for the whole city, the working group continues to meet regularly. It has produced a vision for the future of Bramham, which reflects residents’ views, expressed through public consultation events held in the village hall in the last two years. Full details are on the NP web-site. www.bramham.org.uk Forthcoming work will include monitoring of and publicity for the City Council’s anticipated publication of development site allocations, in which the possible inclusion of a large area at Headley Lane will be of particular concern. Whilst the Parish Council has recently endorsed the Group’s stated opposition to this proposal, it will be necessary to confirm this through further consultation and engagement with Bramham residents. Further information is likely to be available in the next few weeks. J.L 20th September 2014

Thought for the Month A life spent making mistakes is not only more honourable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing. George Bernard Shaw
The American who visited Yorkshire An American photographer on vacation was inside a church in Oldham taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on the wall with a sign that read '£10,000 per call'. The American, being intrigued asked a priest who was strolling by what the telephone was used for. The priest replied that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 you could talk to God. The American thanked the priest and went along his way. Next stop was in Manchester. There, at a very large cathedral, he saw the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Oldham and he asked a nearby nun what its purpose was. She told him that it was a direct line to heaven and that for £10,000 he could talk to God. 'O.K., thank you' said the American. He then travelled to Blackburn, Bolton, Burnley, Rochdale and Littleborough. In every church he saw the same golden telephone with the same '£10,000 per call' sign under it. The American, upon leaving Lancashire decided to travel to Yorkshire to see if Yorkshire men had the same phone. He arrived in Todmorden, and again, in the first church he entered, there was the same golden telephone, but this time the sign under it read '50 pence per call.' The American was surprised so he asked the priest about the sign. 'Father, I've travelled all over Lancashire and I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told that it is a direct line to heaven, but in Lancashire the price was £10,000 per call. Why is it so cheap here?' The priest smiled and answered, 'You're in Yorkshire now my son. It's a local call.'
