I am writing this at the beginning of September and I can definitely feel that autumnal chill in the air! Did you feel that ‘ugh’ feeling when the weatherperson on the television declared that 1st September is the meteorological start of autumn? The mornings are getting darker and the light goes on earlier and earlier in the evening; but, do you know, I can still hear the birds greeting the dawn with plenty of song! Perhaps they are there to lift our spirits? As I searched out my cardigans and jumpers for the cooler days my mind turned to all those people who cannot simply look out the next season’s clothing; those who are struggling with the elements for all sorts of reasons. This summer we have heard of those in Sierra Leone who were caught up in the landslide; those in Bangladesh who were flooded out in the monsoons, those in Ischia made homeless in the earthquake and the people of Houston suffering from Hurricane Harvey. Now we are in September we hear of Hurricane Irma threatening the Caribbean islands and the coast of Florida. If we ever needed to be reminded that God’s world is an awesome place it has been this summer. We are the people of his creation and live in this world in all its guises. The saddest of thoughts that have occurred to me as I watch the news of these disasters is that there are some worse disasters in this world that are totally made by humans. We have political troubles, wars, lack of justice, starvation through the greed of others, mass migration of displaced people and a sense of hopelessness in the face of nuclear threats. In this splendid part of God’s world where we can hear the birds sing and watch the change of season start to dress the trees in autumn colours what can we do for all those other

There will be charity collections for the stricken areas and we can choose to donate to those who cannot help themselves at the moment. But the biggest and most collective thing we can do is to pray; individually and in our worship times. We are promised that our prayers will be heard and answered. Just how the answer becomes evident we are not able to say, but prayer is vital for those in need. It is the one thing we can do together for other people. As Christians we have a mighty tool given to us; a direct communication with God about the things that we need to say. The world about us is in turmoil with many people struggling and we have got the ear of our God to ask for help. The louder the voice that comes from us the more God will realise that those of us in this part of his world have not forgotten those in great need. Add your prayers to those of us all and whatever our age or circumstances we are going to be doing something to address the troubles of others. In this rather gloomy letter I hope you will find a time to delight in the season recognise the beauty we can see in the world around us and give thanks for this as we think of others in our prayers. Rev Trish

Can you spare an hour? Its time for the annual clear up at the Jubilee Garden and we have set a time and day for this years event. We will be at the Jubilee Garden from 10am on Saturday 21st October to cut back and prune all the hedges and trees along with some weeding. If you can come along and help that would be great. If you have any secateurs or petrol hedge trimmers that would be a big help. Otherwise just bring your gardening gloves and give us a hand. More information from Keith Innocent on 07595206611

Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk

September 2017 Update ....communicating with residents The Parish Council doesn’t hold a meeting in August but we have been carrying on with business as usual. Here’s an update: LEEDS FESTIVAL TICKETS 2018 – SAVE THE DATE! A huge thank you Cllrs Linda Richards, June Halliday and Katie Race for all of their hard work this year, and already planning next year. Sunday 4th March 2018 will be the main application day. NEW GARDEN – Apologies for the error in last month’s report. The new garden is on the corner of Lyndon Road, and Lyndon Avenue, not Clifford Road. THEFT AND FRAUD WARNING: Police have asked us to again warn of theft of post to use as proof of ID to open bank accounts, especially from external letter boxes. Advice is to collect your post as soon as possible after delivery. If you think you have been the victim of identity theft, then ring the police specialist fraud advisers on 0300123 2040 or by using the online fraud reporting tool.

PARKING & SPEED LIMITS BY THE SCHOOL / HIGHWAYS ISSUES: After pressure from the Parish Council and Ward Councillors LCC intend, during the 2018-2019 financial year, to introduce a speed limit of 20mph in Bramham and Clifford and 30mph in between. They will also erect pedestrian barriers near the school. LC C does not own any land that could be used for car parking and have advised that parking restrictions would be difficult to enforce and would simply move the problem elsewhere. We will endeavor to have input to LCC Planning when school expansion is considered. LCC are also investigating lighting improvements by the paradise Way/Bowcliffe Road junction.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 4 October, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. THE BELL RINGERS The second and fourth Tuesday in the month the Team meet at 7.30pm and ring for one hour until 8.30pm. New Bell Ringers are always welcome. We apologise that the time listed in the magazine has been incorrect for the last couple of months. We are a small band of local ringers and ring both here and at Collingham church on alternate weeks. As a lot of our ringers work we found it difficult to get to practice nights for 7pm hence the change in time. We hope this has not caused any problems for local residents. Our practice time is normally one hour however when we have new ringers we allow them to come a little earlier to have a practice without the pressure of the other ringers. This is usually only for a couple of weeks while they settle in. We practice so that we can ring for the family service on Sunday and for weddings which is why we love to ring the bells. If you would like to come and meet us, see what we do at practice nights or join our group please ring Vicky on 07951 575734

Bramham NSPCC Presents An evening with the Dunvant Male Choir from Wales on Saturday 7th October 2017 at Bramham Village Hall. Tickets are ÂŁ10 to include lite-bites. There will be a bar. Please telephone 01937 842877 or 01937 842240 for tickets. DO you wish you could talk to someone in confidence? Please note that the date is changing to the SECOND MONDAY in the month. At this time of the year the Bank Holidays get in the way!!! On the second Monday of each month there will be someone with many years of experience of helping the bereaved and people with other concerns, sitting in Church. This is not Counselling, simply an understanding and confidential listener. Please call in between 10.00am and 12 noon on the SECOND Monday of each month if you would like to talk.

Ormesby, Middlesbrough.

A letter from Canon Peter Dear Friends,

29th August 2017

It seems a long time since 25th June when I celebrated my final service with you. It was a really lovely celebration and had a great ‘zing’ quality, in no small part due to St. Mary’s Choir which was enlarged for the occasion. A big thank you to Steve Aston and all who assisted him and to all who formed the choir that day. I loved the surprise ‘Vicar of Dibley’ rendering of the Lord’s My Shepherd. It was also special having The Rev. Steve Jakeman and our Methodist Friends present as well as many former colleagues. Thank you so much for the generous presentations from the Parishes of Lower Wharfe and Thorp Arch and for the unbelievable number of letters and cards. The cheque is greatly helping us to establish the new home scene. The boxes are gradually reducing but the garage is still packed with books and so the unpacking will continue for several weeks. It was my privilege to be able to serve you for seventeen years. When I left the Diocese of Worcester the then Bishop of Worcester, thought that I was coming to a sinecure in Yorkshire. So when Bishop Humphrey Taylor, a former Bishop of Selby retired and moved to the Diocese of Worcester I asked him to make sure that the Bishop of Worcester was correctly appraised ! The Benefice of Bramham has very active and busy parishes and churches and as I write I’m conscious there has been yet another Holiday Club week. Over the years I have been blessed with really first class colleagues, both lay and ordained, and latterly, not least with The Revs Tricia and Jane, Kate Kennedy (Youth Co-ordinator) and Sarah Oates (Administrator). I wish them and the Church Wardens every blessing as the search for my successor becomes more focussed in the coming weeks. Debbie, Helen and I are settling down well and greatly enjoying exploring our new environs. The North York Moors are close by, with Roseberry Topping being a key feature of the landscape. We are only seven miles from the coast and are living adjacent to a National Trust property, Ormesby Hall, with lots of lovely walks just minutes from our home. I’m not sure yet of directions in retirement, but with 46 years of ministry behind me I’m taking the remainder of 2017 quietly. I pray every day for my former parishes. One of the blessings of retirement is to be able to spend a little more time in prayer. May God greatly bless you and yours and may you always know his love, peace and joy. I had the following words from St. Paul’s Letter to the Ephesians printed on my ordination card; they are a reminder that whatever our circumstances or condition we can trust God to work powerfully through us to his glory. “Glory be to Him whose power working in us can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine” (3:20). With renewed thanks for your kindness and support, Good wishes and many blessings, Peter.

GOLD GOLD GOLD GOLD A FOURTH GOLD FOR BRAMHAM IN BLOOM!! The Award Ceremony for Yorkshire in Bloom took place on Tues 12th Sept at York Racecourse. Bramham is in the Large Village category, which came up about an hour into the ceremony. As I waited by the side of the presentation platform I had no idea of our award until I saw it on the large screen…………Silver Award winners irst, then Silver Gilt …… and then … BRAMHAM ………….. GOLD AWARD! I was delighted to accept on behalf of all our gardeners, volunteers, sponsors and residents of the whole village. I must say a huge thank you to my very supportive and hard-working committee. The Judges’ comments were as follows:

Bramham Gold Award Comments by the Judges from the Summer Judging……............ “ We were met by the enthusiastic BIB group, the sun shone on your many themed loral displays. All the communal areas were well maintained and litter free. A committed group with lots of plans, they are always looking to improve and are very open to suggestions and there was evidence of the Spring Judges feedback had been accomplished such as Gill’s rockery, the physic garden and the des res wildlife hotel! The new bug hotel is impressive and and especially with the involvement from the Brownies. Continue building on the existing relationships with the school especially with the proposed ‘outdoor classroom’ project. We endorse the change to some sustainable plants to balance with bedding plants. The judges thought the BIB allotment and future plans for it’s use was commendable. Hope you are able to attract more new members and well done on your achievements.” Additional comments from the Spring Judging……………”Bramham is a charming village of ancient origin. Many well maintained beds/borders/ troughs full of colour and very good plant quality and selection. This very high standard was also evident in the residents’ gardens and the numerous sponsor plaques, posters and promotion plaques showing that residents, local groups and businesses support BIB …...Continued on page 25

and it’s aims. The work done on the cattle ramp bed, the Senior Citizen Garden and the new rockery demonstrate the all year planning and community commitment. The judges were impressed with Brook Babes creative learning schemes about nature and quality of the annual poster competition.

We congratulate all those involved for their warm welcome, commitment, hard work and dedication to the community. A very comprehensive, thoughtful and encouraging report on the work all of you offer to Branham in Bloom. I feel that the Judges have said it all and all I need to do is echo their encouraging comments. Thank you Bramham for making myself and my committee very proud. Graveyard Over the past few months several items have been placed on graves which are not allowed by the Diocesan Graveyard Regulations which govern this Saxon churchyard. An advisory list has been posted in the church notice board by the lychgate. We would be grateful if you would consult this and if in any doubt please remove the items or contact us if you have a question about anything. Glass and other breakable items such as pots are not allowed and are a danger to anybody walking or working in the churchyard. We would ask you to remove all such items if you wish to keep them as we will be clearing anything like this from the middle of July onwards. In the meantime please do not put any broken glass or pottery in the dustbins as they represent a health and safety hazard.
