3 Clergy Letter from Rev’d Stanley Menzies This is being written on the day we commemorate the First World War, the war that was supposed to end all wars. The 4th August 1914 was a momentous occasion and a century later we rightly remember the sacrifice and selflessness of soldiers, civilians and peoples across countries and commonwealth in the cause of freedom and peace. It should give us pause for reflection as we witness the issues and concerns in the 21st century. We live in similar, sombre and testing times which require humility and clarity of thought. We have to start with the world as it is and that requires sober observation. The conflict in Gaza is brutal beyond words, slaughtering the innocent and dehumanising the perpetrators. Across the Middle East conflicts rage from Afghanistan to Iraq, Syria to Libya and the neighbouring states. In Ukraine there is ongoing violence which results in death and anxious questions about Russia’s intentions. Parents in Nigeria still await the return of their children. There is an absence of peace but also a lack of justice and an unwillingness to share that condemns millions to poverty, famine and disease. The world as it is matters supremely because it will shape the future. Alongside our thoughts on the world as it is should be placed the world as it can be and that needs another dimension. There is need for a theological dimension. To put it another way there is an absence of the relationship to the divine which has a profound effect on relationships to
neighbours and leads to human alienation. In every age we are faced with the determination of God to transform all created life in justice, truth and peace. The limitation is that He invites human beings to be partners in this transformation. Too often we have ignored the theological dimension and an essential ingredient is missing to give value to human life. When God is absent from our thinking and our decision-making human life is devalued. When we bring this dimension into our thinking we begin to ask questions, we work alongside our neighbours and with all who are concerned with the world as it is, how we can make sense of it and what is required of each of us. The Principal of the school of divinity at Edinburgh University illustrates this well when he writes,” Theology can continue in the academy but only in a context that is increasingly ecumenical, multi-faith and across all the disciplines of the University.” This is sound advice to the Church; we need to work alongside all with whom we share this world and who seek to transform life in justice, truth and peace. God invites all human beings to join in this work and not just those who claim to be religious and faithful. It is also sound advice to politicians, economists and nations. We need to recognise the theological dimension if we are to make sense of the world as it is and work together with humility and in truth. One of the authors of the American Human Development Report made a statement which underlines this dimension,” Human development is concerned with the basic development idea: namely, advancing the richness of human life, rather than the richness of the economy in which human beings live, which is only part of it.” Continued on page 5

5 Clergy Letter continued from page 3 This accords with the statement of Jesus,” I have come that people may have life and have it abundantly.” Today there are far too many places where women and children and men do not experience the richness of human life. In due season Jesus came into our world, fully human, and announced God’s kingdom. In the words of the prophet God has sent me to announce good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to let the broken victims go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour. His ways, his words and his life made plain this kingdom. He invited others to join him in this work. He is always open to the other and he
associates with the most unlikely folk. Today He invites us to join Him in the work of the Kingdom. We might not wish to describe this invitation in religious terms but the basic insistence is to transform the world as it is into the world as it can be. It is the here and now that must concern us, the absence of peace, justice and goodness. We are called to a way of life that is open to the other, giving and enriching, mindful of creation and of the future. This way relates not only to the life of individuals but to nations, institutions and international bodies in order to have a world of peace, sharing and community. This is at the heart of spirituality May your Kingdom come. Stanley
NEWS FROM BRAMHAM FOOTBALL CLUB Pre season training is continuing at Freely Lane at 6.30pm on a Tuesday evening, this will change when the dark nights come upon us. We now have a reserve team on a Sunday as well as the Saturday team which was promoted last season. Due to the constant waiting regarding the pavilion, we have asked the respective leagues to give us away fixtures until the end of September. This as you can imagine is causing great problems of what we are trying to build at Bramham Football Club. If by the end of September nothing is resolved, then once again the club will have to seek alternative arrangements for home games to be played, as all we are trying to do is play football at Bramham which for some three years now (on December 1st) we have been unable to do so. Yours in Sport Dave

9 DRAMA GROUP Has your child ever dreamed of being in the Bramham panto? Why not let them try this year? Dr John Nicholls is directing this year’s pantomime which will be Dick Whittington. He would like as many junior chorus members as possible, ranging in from year 1 class up to mid-teens (older teens may want to be part of the older chorus). If you have a budding actor/actress on your hands, why not bring them along to Bramham Village Hall on Monday 15th September at 5pm to find out more (the session will be till 6pm). Alternatively, contact Matt Suddaby on 07784018680 or matt_suddaby@hotmail.com for more info. Children will have to be available for Monday evenings between 5pm and 6pm from the end of September, and maybe some Sunday evenings in November (TBC). They must be available each night of the panto week (Monday 1st to Saturday 6th December). For older teens the first meeting of the panto chorus will be on Wednesday 10th Sept at 7.45 in the hall.

To all the Bramham Ball Organisers We just wanted to thank you for the incredible amount of work that you all put in to creating the ball in Bowcliffe Hall grounds. The marquee and the setting was absolutely beautiful and organising an event for over 300 people must have required an incredible amount of hard work. You as the organisers put so much effort into this event, and all for charity, and Bramham is very lucky to have teams like you willing to give up their precious time. It makes me very sad that a number of people from the ball have pointed criticism at you because the caterers weren’t as good as last year. I wasn’t there in 2013 but heard great things about the food, so to book the same caterer and the same menu was obviously the thing to do in 2014. If they didn’t deliver to your expectations then I am sure you were as disappointed as the guests and I am sorry that you have been on the receiving end of so much criticism both at the event and following. And we heard a little rumbling that some guests have complained about getting their suits and dresses wet in the rain! It was absolutely pouring down for over 3 hours – what were you supposed to do about that? We had all seen the weather forecast so needed to be prepared for getting home without falling in a puddle. So just wanted to drop you a line and say that we had a fun night and thank you very much for organising such a successful charity fundraiser.

13 LONELINESS Recently there have been a number of articles in the Press about loneliness and some of them have been very distressing. It just made me think how lucky we are in Bramham to have the Monday Club run by Mavis Wilson and her team. Naturally with loneliness the people involved, particularly if they are disabled, are not likely to go out and find out what is available. They need to be contacted personally. If you have a relative or neighbour who you think could benefit from a monthly get together please have a chat with them and then contact Mavis. Remember also that transport can be provided which is a major plus factor.

15 ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH BRAMHAM
CHURCH OPEN DOOR SCHEME 2014/15 AN INVITATION TO JOIN The Open Door Scheme started in 1992 and over the years has provided much needed support towards the running costs of this beautiful building. However this year we have an enormous financial challenge. In addition to the income required for the general day to day costs, restoration work is urgently needed to make the Church Tower structurally sound, safe and weather proof and such work will require raising approx. £60000. The Church Council is working very hard in organising new events to raise as much money as possible, as well as applying for funds from English Heritage and other such bodies for the Church Tower restoration - but we would be very pleased if more people were to join the Open Door Scheme.. Membership costs just £10 per person, per number which entitles you to take part in the quarterly draws with a prize of £100 drawn in September, December, March, and June and an extra prize of £25 at Christmas. We welcome everyone who attend or just visit the Church whether it be at normal services or on very special occasions.and this year each month an ‘alternative’ service is to be held, intended to appeal to those who may not attend Church regularly. All Saints’ Church is a beautiful 11th Century listed building located in the centre of the village to be enjoyed by people and children of all ages. If you would like to join- please complete the slip below and send to my address. Best wishes from the Village Church Council. 19 TIPS ON CARING FOR SOMEONE WITH DEMENTIA, IN ASSOCIATION WITH HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE, WETHERBY AND NORTH LEEDS With dementia very much in the news recently, following the international dementia conference in London and the Prime Minister, David Cameron, dubbing the degenerative condition "one of the greatest enemies of humanity", I will be sharing some essential advice for those of you caring for someone with dementia. •
In the UK alone there are around 800,000 people living with dementia, worldwide that number is 40 million – and it is set to double every 20 years.
•
We have to fight to cure it. I know some people will say that it’s not possible, but we have seen with cancer what medication can achieve.
We first need to tackle head-on the market failure perilously undermining dementia research and drug development. -David Cameron One of the most important things to understand about dementia is that it is essential to change the ways in which you care for the person in order to maintain their (and your) quality of life. By putting yourself in their world, rather than trying to bring them back into ours, it will give you the opportunity to be a much more effective caregiver. 1. Redirect: Changing the topic of conversation, if a relative or friend asks the same question multiple times, for example, this can stop unhelpful thought patterns. 2. Apologise: Simply saying “I’m sorry, I misunderstood you” and taking the blame, even when something is not your fault, can often calm down the individual if they are distressed. 3. Remove: Removing distracting and or harmful things from the individual or removing the individual from a situation or environment which is distressing or angering them will help them to remain calm and content. 4. Simple choices: Individuals with dementia often feel like they have lost control of their lives and so giving them simple choices, like “Would you like tea or coffee?”, will help them to feel more in control and, in turn, happier. 5. Engage: Engaging in basic mental, physical and social activities has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety for people with dementia. It is important to recognise that it may take various attempts and approaches before these techniques become truly effective. If a technique does not work first time, it is best to take a step back and try again a few minutes later, taking a different approach.

Subject Welcome The Chair welcomed everybody to the meeting. Chairman’s Report The Chair had prepared an article for the Annual Parish Report which outlined the work of the Village Hall Committee this year, the current priorities and the emerging priorities. It also referenced the work that has started and will be starting on the hall and cottage and those areas of the village hall that have already been updated, refitted or refurbished. Other things in the pipeline are a Drama Group plan for a new PA system which can be used by all hall users and a hearing loop system. The Village hall committee has plans for improving entrances and external lighting and providing better storage etc. Also detailed in the article was the diverse way in which the hall was being used and the variety of users (e.g., beer festival, pantos, plays and murder mysteries, music events, charity events, private parties and weddings, comedy nights, wrestling etc) The chair presented a summary of the article at the meeting. The chair expressed his appreciation and thanks to the committee and particularly to those members who had worked on the cottage and on applying for grants. The chair also expressed his appreciation and thanks for the allocation of funding from the Parish Council and Caird Peckfield. The Chair went on to say that it is important for all involved to continue to promote the excellent facilities of Bramham Village Hall and encourage everyone to come and use it. Treasurer’s Report The treasurer circulated accounts. The Treasurer confirmed that the accounts had been independently prepared and audited by an FCA. It was noted that the accounts looked healthy. 27 Village Hall Minutes continued from page 25 General Account - Income It was noted that there was more regular users this year. This had followed a drop in the previous year. There has been an increase in bookings. Donations were from the community fund for refurb of the bar and roof above the bar. Expenditure The bank charges were queried and the treasurer explained that it actually referred to a transfer of cheques and that there were no bank charges. It was noted that Pat Rimington and Mary Batt had worked hard to manage the cleaners to get the best results possible. Pat has secured a commercial firm to come in and clean 3 hours a week. This is working out more cost efficient and they use their own products which saves the village hall having to purchase them. Restoration Account - Income Marie Lynch had done a brilliant job in building the 100 club members up to about 100. These had dropped during 2013, when some people had not renewed their membership. Christine had contacted them again and some have renewed their member ship this year. Numbers are back up to about 80. Questions were asked about what ‘Stock Movement’ referred to and this was explained as bar stock that is held. Grants Information and Update Caird Peckfield have awarded a grant through Grantscape for work on the village hall roof. The Parish Council has awarded £58,000 for refurbishment of the cottage and roof. The quote for the cottage is just over £40,000. Any money not used on the cottage will go towards the roof and other projects. Work on the cottage started on 30 June. Start date for work on the roof is 14th July.
Election of Officers Chair – Stewart Gibson Treasurer – Christine Suddaby Secretary – Chris Wray Deputy Chair - Roger Freeman (and Project Manager – Roof) Other roles:Ian Dalton and Mick Wray – Project Managers – Cottage Jillian Lawson – Grants Officer Becky Zimmerman – Marketing and Sponsorship

Thought for the Month It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness. Charles Spurgeon
Under the age of 40? - You won't understand this! My mum used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread butter on bread on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in ice pack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli We all took PE ..... And risked permanent injury with a pair of Dunlop sandshoes instead of having crosstraining athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors that cost as much as a small car. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now. We got the cane for doing something wrong at school, they used to call it discipline yet we all grew up to accept the rules and to honour & respect those older than us. We had 50 kids in our class and we all learned to read and write, do maths and spell almost all the words needed to write a grammatically correct letter......., FUNNY THAT!! We all said prayers in school irrespective of our religion, sang the national anthem and no one got upset. I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself. I just can't recall how bored we were without Computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations. We weren't!! We played “King of the Hill” on piles of gravel left on vacant building sites and when we got hurt, mum pulled out the 2/6p bottle of iodine and then we got our backside spanked. Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10 day dose of antibiotics and then mum calls the lawyer to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat. How did we survive then?!
