Clergy Letter - The Rev. Jane Brown It is a great pleasure to be able to write my first contribution to the Parish Magazine. By the time you read this, I will have been the Curate for just a couple of months. I am now on a journey of discovery, finding out about the churches and the communities and people we serve. This article is, however, your chance to find out a bit about me. I was York born and bred and, although I have lived away at times, my permanent home has never been outside of Yorkshire! Growing up, however, it was a different story. My mother was from ‘the other side of the Pennines’ and my father was Irish. Both my older sister and brother were born in Ireland. Yorkshire became the family home, when my parents moved to York, in the 1960s, for the opening of the University. My father was a Maths Professor. As a child, I attended church and was educated in the faith, but it was not until many years later that I really began to believe all I had been taught. Just over 24 years ago, in the midst of family difficulties and loss, I found myself turning to God with lots of awkward questions. My personal circumstances had jolted me into really thinking about life. There were times I was angry with him. Indeed I wanted to keep being angry with him, but all I kept coming back to was a sense of his love for me. As my husband, Paul, came to faith a short while later, we found becoming a Christian

family had a huge impact on our lives, our sense of purpose and our contentment. We have had three children. Our firstborn, a son, died of cancer aged 8, and our second, a baby daughter, also died. We are blessed, however, to have a surviving daughter, Beth, who is to be married in September. So this is turning into a very busy year! I had a successful career in a wide range of public services and did not expect to leave that until retirement, but God had other plans. I had always felt it important for Christians to be in senior positions outside the church and had expected that my career was my calling. Over a period of a few years, however, I became aware that there was something else I was meant to be doing. I did not for a moment imagine it was this, but as the journey unfolded each step seemed to make sense. It was my husband, Paul, who first suggested that I would end up being ordained. I told him not to be so silly…. It was only as others began to express the same thought that the penny finally dropped with me. It might have been unexpected but I would not swap it for the world. I am really excited about what God has in store for us here and for the local churches and people. My ambitions are quite simple…to enable the church to continue to be active and serving the local community and ultimately to bring more people to know the transformative power of Christ. I believe passionately that the Church is not there just for itself and its own members but for the wider community. To that end, I am trying to get out and about and meet people. Do say hello if you see me around. Continued on page 5

Clergy letter continued

We feel very fortunate to be living in such a lovely community and the location is ideal for Paul, who travels all over Yorkshire for his work, managing resilience and special operations for Yorkshire Ambulance Service. It is also a great place for him to pursue his passion for cycling.

5 So, as Paul and I establish our new lives here - meeting new people, encountering new situations and experiences – we are blessed to have the support and love of an ever faithful God. We know he is always there for us, just as he is for anyone who calls on his name.

The WiSE Owl Café for the Community Having opened 2½ years ago, The WiSE Owl Café has gone from strength to strength in its bid to reduce social isolation and loneliness for the elderly. Now welcoming a wider range of visitors, the café opens its doors to regulars, mums with children, cyclists and even well behaved dogs. It’s a lovely place to meet and eat with friends and family - enjoy new breakfast choices, take-out lunches plus usual favourites and of course the homemade daily scones and delicious cakes. Christine Hardman, who runs the café with a team of over 40 volunteers, said: “We have a lovely atmosphere, with many friends and familiar faces. The café is very much a community initiative and it’s a pleasure to be part of such a worthwhile venture.” “We use local butchers and suppliers for our produce and our roasted coffee beans are freshly ground for all your favourite drinks - sales of which support the cure of clubfoot in Africa through the Cielo Garforth (Baraka Foundation).” The café has free parking at the rear of the village hall and FREE WIFI inside. New chairs to improve your comfort have just arrived and there is plenty of space for pushchairs and wheelchairs too. As a thank you for visiting, the café runs a loyalty scheme where customers are awarded with a WiSE Owl stamp every time they purchase a drink. Once 8 stamps are collected the 9th drink is FREE. Why not come in for your first visit, mention this notice and receive a drink at half price we look forward to welcoming you! Our new opening hours from 1st September will be 9am to 3pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and we’ll be open all year round. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer at the café or would like to find out more about the services provided by WiSE

BRAMHAM PAVILION AND PLAYING FIELD UPDATE The Bramham Pavilion committee is now in full swing and we’ve been very busy! The result is that the pavilion is being well used and growing into a fantastic village facility. We have had several children’s parties over the summer, and we run the Saturday Morning Kitchen during 5 Star children’s football, providing teas, coffees & bacon butties – do call in! We also set up a Friday morning playtime for children during the summer holidays, with toys, games and refreshments, and it was lovely to see lots of Mums and children, sometimes over 100! having fun on Friday mornings on our lovely playing field, and making great use of the pavilion for indoor play & refreshments. Then in August we held the Bramham Summer Barbeque and we were all thrilled to see so many residents, and their families and friends, up there having such a great time. The BBQ burgers & sausage went down well, and the bar had us run off our feet! (Good news!) We would like to thank Neil of Costcutters in Boston Spa for his help in supplying the bar. Shane and April from Bramham Drama group put on a super puppet show – much appreciated by our younger residents.

The event was a real village event made possible by people chipping in to help. A very heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped providing music, games, and karaoke, cooking heaps of onions, baking potatoes, lending tables and chairs, and also providing much needed help cooking at the BBQ and serving at the bar. In particular we were so lucky to have Matthew Martin, a proper chef! in charge of the BBQ!! And of course it raised very helpful funds towards pavilion costs. Thank you to everyone involved and everyone who came along to enjoy themselves and lend support. Next event – Bramham Bake Off in the Village Hall 26th September – enter a cake or just come along to taste them! And Bramham FC are back for the 2014/15 season – come and cheer them on! The pavilion committee is a friendly, informal group and would welcome new members and helpers. If you can give a little bit of your time to help make the pavilion a success please contact the secretary, Gerry Taylor on 845828 or by email taylorgerry@btinternet.com Bramham Pavilion Committee

We are producing the Bramham Calendar again for 2016 and as usual we need your photographs Anyone can submit a photograph, from young and old, beginners or those who take their hobby of photography more seriously. It would be great to see images which reflect the lovely village and area in which we live. The photographs must be in landscape, and taken at the highest resolution your camera can cope with and left at the Village Shop with your name and address.

The production of the Calendar is one of our Church’s main fund raiser, so please keep taking photographs and hand them in to the Village Shop, Rev’d Stanley Menzies, Gill Young, or Anne Palmer, before 12th September and let’s make 2016 the best calendar so far. The photographs will be chosen and on view in the village hall supper room from 11.30 to 1.30 pm on 12th September 2015

We look forward to seeing your entries.

Thought for the month

IMPORTANT NOTICE Please note the email address for contributions to this magazine and all correspondence for adverts is now:-

bramham.magazine@gmail.com A smile for October A mother asked her son, as they waited for the bus, to tell the driver he was four years old. That way he would ride for free. So as they got into the bus, and the driver asked Jimmy how old he was, the little boy replied solemnly: "I am four years old." "And do you know when will you be five years old?" asked the smiling driver. “Oh yes, that’s easy,“ replied Jimmy – “just as soon as I get off the bus.”
