Clergy Letter from Revd. Jane Brown
So often people talk about prayer as though it is difficult, something to be learnt and mastered. And yet, many more of us than would describe ourselves as believers, pray at times of particular need. We pray when we can think of nothing else to do, when life feels so desperate that we can only turn to God. My daughter’s washing machine broke recently and, as her and her husband live on a tight budget, it was taking some time to get it fixed or replaced. When the supply of clean clothes was coming to an end, the interim solution was to visit us, where they could not only be fed for free, but also get piles of washing done! If you have children living away from home, you may be familiar with the way in which you may be called upon at times of need. Now, as a parent, I do not mind her turning up and making use of our hospitality and over-working our washing machine in this way. I love to see her and unexpected time with her is to be treasured. How much more does our Heavenly Father treasure time spent with us? Prayer is the link that connects us with God. If all we ever do is to come to God with our needs, at difficult times, we are ~ A.B. Simpson closing off the opportunity for a deeply loving and life-changing relationship. God wants to be part of our everyday lives too.
Thankfully my daughter not only rings when she wants something. Often we chat away about nothing much, just as a way of sharing our lives even though we live some distance apart. Conversation between us is relaxed and natural (most of the time!). Even the times when conversation is a bit strained, we would soon miss each other if we did not talk for a while. Prayer is just as natural. It can be as simple as chatting with God, or just resting in quietly in God’s presence, and sometimes it involves a more serious talk with God. We can get quite anxious about what words to use, but that is not necessary. Books In prayer it is better to have a heart and formal prayers may without words help, but God is happy than words without a heart. too with informal conversation. We do not need - John Bunyan to think so carefully about the words we use with those closest to us. No one love us more than God. If you feel you do not know how to pray, do not worry. Wanting to pray and asking God for his help to do so is enough. There is no right or wrong way. visit www.justpray.uk have a chat with one of the clergy within the Benefice talk to a friend who prays regularly look out for the prayer ideas and reflections in future issues just try praying!
Clergy Letter Continued Most of us have questions about prayer. In further articles over the coming year we will explore the most common issues, but do feel free to suggest a topic. Revd Jane Brown Prayer Idea of the Month

Do you wish you could talk to someone in confidence? On the first Monday of each month there will be someone with many years of experience of helping the bereaved and people with other concerns, sitting in Church. This is not Counselling, simply an understanding and confidential listener. Please call in between 10.00 and 12 noon on the first Monday of each month if you would like to talk.

Announcement
I have invited Rev. Jane Brown to be the acting Priest in Charge of All Saints' Church, Bramham, for the remainder of her curacy with the approval of Bishop John. I am delighted to say that Jane has accepted this position. As you are aware I have done likewise with a number of previous stipendiary curates, as it provides a level of training which ensures a smooth transition into an incumbency. Jane, like Trish and myself will continue to operate across the Benefice but will have a particular focus at Bramham. Trish remains acting Priest in Charge at Thorp Arch & Walton, and I continue to take primary responsibility for Boston Spa. This focussing of Ministry relates largely to liturgical and pastoral matters and doesn’t detract from my responsibilities as Vicar of the Benefice. Canon Peter.
The MEDIEVAL EVENT was a great success so much so the Frei Company have agreed to come along again next year. They demonstrated how a Knight would be assisted by the Squire “dressing” for battle—a very slow process; they then demonstrated the armour and weapons showing us the most effective method of defeating the enemy. The Camp Followers had prepared a vast array of food, they were of course dressed in authentic costumes. The Company answered a barrage of questions and many visitors then enjoyed Tea and 21st century cakes in Church. Our thanks to the Team who manned the Stall all day and to those who supplied the delicious cakes. We will arrange the next Medieval event during Term Time.
Bramham Parish Council www.thisisbramham.co.uk August 2016 Update
To All Bramham Residents:
Village events: Thank you to everyone for helping at, and supporting, our village events. We had a great Gala. For the first Bramham 10k and fun run over 50 people helped as marshals, setting out the course, serving refreshments, presenting prizes, and providing first aid. As a result it was a great success and we hope to do it again next year. The Pavilion Playgroup ran again this summer thanks to hard working volunteers, and volunteers also put on brilliant BBQ. The Council also thanks All Saints’ Church for an excellent Medieval Event. It’s been another fantastic summer in Bramham, and the Bake Off is still to come 24th September in the Village Hall!
Missing chairs: Disappointingly, 6 folding wooden chairs have disappeared from the pavilion. If anyone has them or knows where they are please do return them. If anyone wants to borrow chairs or tables at any time please just ask. Site Allocations: Leeds City Councils Plans Panel met on 19 th July to discuss Site Allocations for the Outer North-East area (Alwoodley, Harewood and Wetherby Wards). Site Allocations is the process where Leeds City Council decides the sites where housing development is going to take place in the next twelve years (i.e. to 2028). The good news for Bramham is that the Headley Hall site is no longer being considered and alternatives have been put forward.
Reporting Power Cuts: We all keep candles in the house (just in case!) but would you know who to ring? On 6th September a new service will be launched. It works like dialing 999. To report a power cut or for information about one, just dial 105. You can also register your mobile telephone number with Northern Powergrid and if there is a power cut, they will send you updates by SMS (text). They promise not to use your number for any other purpose and it doesn’t matter which energy supplier you are with. To register just give them a call on 0800 375 675.
Next Meeting: Next meeting Wednesday 7 September, 7.30 pm, in the Pavilion. We hope you find this update useful. If you would like to read more detailed information about items discussed, the minutes of the meeting can be found on our parish notice board and on Bramham Parish Council’s official website. HARVEST FESTIVAL WEEKEND 8th and 9th October
Following on from last
years very successful event we would like to repeat some of the activities. We will have displays of produce and harvest related items, for the children we invite them to make a miniature garden or perhaps make vegetable animals!! Have you any antique implements that would have been used at Harvest time? Photographs of anything to do with Harvest? Make a note of the date—there will be more information in the October Magazine.
BRAMHAM NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN GROUP We reported recently that we were proposing to issue a questionnaire to all residents of the parish at the beginning of September, for return at the end of September. I’m pleased to report that we have been able to achieve that aim thanks to the work carried out by members of the Group, together with much and gratefully received assistance and guidance from our consultant David Gluck and also the new Clerk to the Parish Council Keith Langley.
To give you an outline of the work still involved in order to prepare the Neighbourhood Plan now that the questionnaires have been issued, the following is a list of elements which will be carried out before the end of 2016 by members of the group, and by our consultant with informed assistance where necessary from members of the group. Sept/October - Evidence based review of the Questionnaire; Analysis of the Questionnaire results; Vision/Objectives/Issues/Policy Intentions Workshop; Housing Need/Market assessment; Local Green Space assessment. November/December - Character assessment; Landscape assessment; Community Buildings assessment ‌ and first Draft Plan. Early in the New Year we plan to hold a Community event to enable all residents to play a full part in the preparation of the village Neighbourhood Plan. Additional work in 2017 will involve the formal process of drafting the final plan, obtaining comments from Leeds City Council and all other statutory bodies, a public consultation process, further amendments as required and, if all goes well, submission of the Plan to Leeds City Council around August/September 2017. A process of examination by an independent examiner, public consultation and further modification/consultation will then follow, before hopefully entering a public referendum process towards final adoption by Leeds City Council by April 2018. As we have reported before, this Group currently comprises 5 residents and 2 parish councillors - you can see above that there is much work to do for these volunteers over the next couple of years, so any resident wishing to help in this process will be gratefully welcomed. Bramham Drama Group News Pantomime News This year’s pantomime will be Snow White and the Several Dwarfs by Andrew O’Leary and will be directed by “The Christines” – Chris Wray and Christine Suddaby. The show will be performed from Weds 30th November to Saturday 3rd December, including a matinee on Saturday 3rd. Tickets will be available from mid-September from “Betty Box Office” on 07747 778536 or you can book by emailing bramhamdramagroup@gmail.com. Junior Drama Group will perform in the panto, under the direction of Matt Suddaby and Aimee Wray. If your child (ideally between 5 and 14) is interested in joining the group, rehearsals will start in September – days and times to be confirmed. Please email bramhamdramagroup@gmail.com to ask for information. Back stage and general help is always needed at pantomime with tasks such as painting the scenery, publicity, costume making/finding, sound and lighting and lots more. One member said “I popped along 25 years ago and offered to help ... 25 years later I still love panto almost as much as I love Christmas! I've made loads of new friends, laughed my socks off for 3 months of rehearsals and it's been perhaps the most fun thing I've ever been involved in. So if you are considering getting involved but haven't made that move yet then just do it! Pop along and join the team ... No skills in anything at all required. Just a little enthusiasm to help put on a show. You would be made most welcome” This year we are making a special plea for help with the stage make-up. Our usual make up lady, Glen Wing, is very poorly and unlikely to be able to help so if anyone reading this could help with the stage makeup, please contact us. WETHERBY RUFC Another season dawns and Wetherby now find themselves in Yorkshire 2, competition is likely to be a lot tougher but the players are training hard and looking forward to it. Last season ended on a disappointing note with a narrow 2016 defeat in the final of the Yorkshire Silver Trophy to Thornensians who were promoted with us last season. The Club will be fielding a 3rd Team next season so together with the Vets we will have four senior mens teams plus a ladies team. Regestration for The Junior Section takes place on Sepember 4th, anyone interested in playing is very welcome from 10am onwards last year we had over 400 boys and girls registered and most teams enjoyed considerable success. We will be running sides at all age groups to under 18 starting at 3 with the ‘Wetherby Ruggers’.Wetherby Ruggers is our Micro rugby section for players from 3 years old to Under 7's where they join the structured development program devised by the RFU. Wetherby Ruggers is fun sports participation for boys and girls of all abilities. We deliver rugby in a fun way and in a safe environment. Bramham Village Hall news September 2016
Summer maintenance at the Village Hall By the time this magazine goes to press the maintenance work will have been completed on the hall. Several people have commented on how well the hall looks with a new lick of paint. The contractor that undertook the work is highly recommended. He is Dean Garman who can be contacted on 07557 791442 or dean79@hotmail.com. Externally the wall at the side of the supper room has been completed and the lines painted on the car park. The two outstanding jobs are new access doors into the supper room at the side of the hall, and replacement some kitchen items such as the pool table and the extractor fan. The Committee is also grateful to the committee responsible for the Tadcaster Fund Raiser who donated funds to the Village Hall. It has been suggested that this might fund new blinds in the hall, but a final decision will be made at the next committee meeting Bookings for 2017 Please remember to book the hall early if you have a special event in 2017.
