The Fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen

uly 16th is the Fiesta of the Virgin Carmen and Spain is one of many countries that celebrate this very historic day, particularly revered by fishermen. According to biblical legend the prophet Elias went to live in a cave at Mount Carmelo near Galilee in Israel. Religious monks who visited him were known as 'Carmelites' and began preaching the Christian gospel. Despite persecution, the movement spread into Europe and France and England in the 13th Century. In 1251, the leader of the Carmelites was an Englishman called Simon Stock. Tradition tells us that on July 16th the Virgin Mary appeared in a vision and gave Simon a cloak as a reward for the group's devotion. The Virgin Mary was known as the Virgin (Mary) Carmen and from this time became also known as the 'Virgin of the Cloak'.

and also fishermen who have retired. is An EasterCarmen Procession variously known also as "La Reina de los Mares" (Queen of the seas) and "Stella Maris" (Star of the sea). In Andalucia, fishermen in towns and villages on the coast celebrate this day from Cádiz to Villaricos, including Adra, Almerimar, Almería, La Isleta de Moro (Cabo de Gata), Carboneras and Garrucha. It is known that this fiesta was celebrated in Almería in the year 1500. Inland areas still celebrate this day as well, including Cuevas del Almanzora where, after a parade of the statue, there are floral tributes, general activities and a night of In later years, Carmen was pronounced the Patron dancing. During August many places celebrate the fiesta of San Roque and Sorbas and Arboleas have San Roque as their Patron Saint. August 15th is a National Fiesta.

Focus on Local News More Chemists 45 new chemists are planned for the Almería province. The provincial health delegate for the Junta de Andalucia, Manuel Lucas, announced that this expansion was planned to provide chemists where the local population had grown in numbers and there was no nearby chemist. El Ejido and Roquetas will have 13 and 12 new "farmacias", Nijar 4 with a new one planned for Cantoria and Cuevas del Almanzora. Vera will get 2 more with one at the coast and 2 are planned for Huércal Overa and Pulpí with one being in San Juan de Los Terreros. Mojácar is destined for 2 new outlets with one planned for the 'La Rumina' area near the Hotel Continental. Now these premises have been suggested a period of public debate will take place and it may be up to 12 months before any of the new facilities are a reality. Judge Orders Demolition A judge in Almería has upheld a complaint by the Junta de Andalucia that a block of 129 apartments at Playa Serena, Roquetas de Mar is illegal. The apartments are 40% occupied by mainly Spanish owners. The complaint started in 2003 when Roquetas gave permission for the complex of apartments with 4 floors and 8,600 square metres of total construction. The Junta claimed then that permission was only allowed for 14 two- storey properties totalling 1,342 square metres and they were designated as "tourist" apartments. The developer sold to private owners after the complex was finished in 2007. The judge has ruled that the building licence and occupation licences issued by Roquetas town hall are null and void, and demolition must follow. New Garrucha Promenade Outline planning approval has been given for the extension of the Garrucha beach promenade between the castle and the petrol station. This project was dependent on a new roundabout at the Mojácar-Garrucha boundaries. As well as a promenade it is intended that there will be garden areas, parking and an open-air concert or event

auditorium near the castle. Although the permissions from the coastal authorities and Almería are still only verbal agreements, the mayor Juan Francisco Fernández, is confident that the new promenade will go ahead. TDT Put Off The switch from Analogue to Digital television was planned for June 30th in Andalucía and 42 towns or villages in Almería province that fall within the "North" area. Recent figures suggested that only 20 of the 42 districts had full coverage, another 19 had partial coverage and 3 had nothing. One of the conditions for the switch to digital is that television coverage must be equal or better than the analogue reception. The Junta de Andalucía (governing body) has earmarked 7 million euros to help town halls implement this plan together with 8 million from central government. Town halls had until June 11th to solicit funds based on a technical report. The conditions of these grants were not however published until May 22nd! It is now thought that the switch over period will happen later this summer.

AVE Land Protest Residents of Sorbas and particularly those in La Herrería are opposing the 5 year expropriation of land where construction equipment for the high speed train has been scheduled. José Fernández, the Mayor of Sorbas, went to Seville to argue their case. He pointed out that a lot of the land in question had fruit trees, lettuce, tomato or peppers in cultivation and production, whilst other

Other residents of Los Gallardos are similarly concerned where 20 hectares of land in Alfaix has been earmarked for temporary expropriation. As a result of meetings with the AVE train line constructers, it was agreed that some areas adjacent to tunnel entrances had to have land expropriated temporarily to house machinery and essential work areas and also safety and emergency equipment. Other areas were able to be sited elsewhere, and trees could be moved. The representatives of the construction companies were of the opinion that agriculture would flourish after the work was finished, as the soil removed during tunnelling would enrich the normal soil.

Beach Bar Solution? The coastal authorities that administer the "Ley de Costas" (coastal law) have been looking at beach bars in Andalucía with particular scrutiny in recent months. In their opinion, many beach bars are "illegal" as regards their placement on the beach or just off the beach. Beach bar owners, town halls and tourist bodies consider that beach bars are an essential part of the tourist attraction, generate thousands of jobs and considerable income. The president of the Junta de Andalucía, José Antonio Griñán, appears to have found a solution after talks with central government. From 2010, the Junta will take responsibility for the issuing of licences to beach bars and their overall control. It is not clear yet whether this new change

of responsibility will mean that the improvements to beaches and associated work will pass to the regional government as well. Destination Unknown The replica Arab boat 'Faluca Almeraya' is a major tourist attraction at Almería port. Recently it was returned to the port after work in a boatyard to cure leaks. Whether it stays in the water has been the subject of debate for 4 years, since it was launched. The latest proposal is that it is taken to the garden area in front of the Mediterranean Games Pavilion. The boatyard that repaired the vessel has been asked to give a quotation for removing the boat from the water and the manufacture of a suitable cradle on dry land. The councillor for tourism, María del Mar Vázquez, is keen that the boat-museum is moved to an area on dry land, where more tourists could have access, despite her name! Albox Tourist Boost The Tourist department of the Junta de Andalucía has declared that the annual religious pilgrimage from Albox to the El Saliente monastery is to be designated as an official tourist attraction. The pilgrimage takes place every September and up to 800 people, many from other parts of Spain, walk the 18 kilometres from Albox to the monastery. Almería Missing Out? A new EU initiative starts next October whereby 500,000 tourists from Eastern block countries come to Spain and 80,000 to Andalucía. The chosen tourists will be between 55 and 75 years of age and come principally from Poland, Hungary and Slovakia and stay at 4 star hotels with half board. The EU funds these holidays and Málaga, Cádiz and Huelva will welcome these tourists. For reasons at present unknown, neither Granada nor Almería are included in the first phase of this plan that continues until April 2010. The scheme is called "Plan Senior" and will cost 11 million euros during the first winter season.

Focus on Local News continued No Bike Ways Town halls with more then 50,000 inhabitants can obtain money for a variety of environmental projects including dedicated bike-ways. 19 such projects were given the go-ahead last April with 8 million euros of funding. Roquetas de Mar applied and have constructed 3 kilometres and received 426,000 euros. Almería City on the other hand did not apply. A spokesperson stated that the city had not completed the technical reports necessary before the applications were made. Hotel Facelifts 3 hotels in Almería province including the Hotel Moresco in Mojácar pueblo are having major restoration work totalling 29 million euros. The Andalucian tourist authorities are making grants totalling 7 million euros as part of an incentive plan to improve tourist facilities and generate employment. The other two hotels to benefit are in Roquetas and El Ejido.

The 400 Euros The plan to give 400 euros to tax payers is now 1 year old. Those who were eligible received 200 euros in June 2008, but those on very low salaries or with other benefits didn't get the full 200. In following months those eligible received 33 euros. At present, until the Income Tax (RENTA) returns for 2008 are all processed the exact cost is not known but will probably be close to 7.000 million euros. The scheme continues in 2009, as it was meant to be permanent. The debate at present is what will happen in 2010! The idea was to help defray high mortgage rates and inflation but mortgage costs have fallen dramatically along with inflation. The Spanish government are therefore busy with their calculators and may make a limit of earnings before tax. This could be 24,000 euros the same limit as another tax change for 2011, or both might be raised to 30,000. This amendment would save an estimated 2,000 million euros in 2010. Some economists think the whole scheme should be scrapped!

Níjar Film Studios A film office was opened 12 months ago in Níjar to co-ordinate the making of films and attracts new filmmakers. The mayor, Antonio Jesús Rodríguez, is now looking at existing buildings in Níjar to convert into a full production facility. A similar centre exists in Málaga but the climate, light and scenery at Níjar is still highly valued by John Lennon Statue Repaired filmmakers. Focus on Local News continued authorities have re-classified the terms on which illegal taxis were fined 1,500 euros. The "offence" has now been classified as "operating public transport without a licence". This carries a fine of between 4,600 to 6,000 euros and the lower figure of 4,600 has been agreed as the new fine. Increased police patrols and checks at the airport and the central bus station have resulted in more illegal taxis being detected and fined. The taxi drivers’ association believe that the new fine is a major improvement.

The smokers are expected to pay 5.7 euros more a month if they smoke a packet a day of a popular brand and motorists 3 euros per month based on 100 litres of petrol purchased. Diesel costs are slightly less. The tax rise is predicted to raise 2,300 million euros. The Spanish economy vice president, Elena Salgado, considers these "modest" rises will bring in necessary tax income without affecting purchases.

Cornea Transplant Successes Torrecárdenas Hospital in Almería city first started a cornea transplant programme in 1999. Since then they have transplanted 80 corneas for patients from Almería province and extracted another 90 that have been sent to other hospitals. The Spanish National Transplant Authority collates information regarding patients waiting for transplant corneas and the waiting list in Almería has now been reduced to zero. With modern techniques corneas are often transplanted either the same day or within 24 hours of their removal. Owing to the work done in Almería the Andalucian health authorities have no plans to open another similar centre locally.

Arboleas Shopping Centre? The mayor of Arboleas, Angel García, is involved in talks with various bodies regarding a large shopping centre on the boundaries of Arboleas and Albox. He has already met representatives of the Junta de Andalucía who have to specially license shopping centres, architects and transport authorities regarding the road access necessary. Angel García considers that Arboleas is ideally situated to attract shoppers and the necessary commercial companies.

3D The 'Yelmo' cinema complex in Roquetas Gran Plaza Centre has converted their largest cinema to show digital 3D films. The traditional 35mm projector has been replaced with a digital projector that has the film on a hard drive. This cinema seats 370 spectators who will be issued with special glasses to be collected after each performance. Partly because of the cost of the glasses the entrance fee for the 3D films has been set at 8.80 euros. The digital projector has the ability to receive and transmit sporting or concert events by satellite and the hard drive means that the quality of the sound and vision will not change however many times the films are shown. Amongst the first of the 3D films are showings of 'Los Mundos de Coraline', 'Jonas Tobacco and Fuel Increases Brothers in Concert', 'Ice Age 3' and 'Vamos a la In a surprise move the Spanish government has Luna'. Focus on Local News continued CO2 Emissions Almería industry reduced their CO2 emissions in 2008 by 28% compared to 2007. Thus was better than the guideline reduction of 24% for Andalucía as a region from central government. The 6.5 million tons released in 2008 took into account the 5 million tons from the Carboneras 'Endesa' electricity generating plant. This plant managed to reduce their own 2008 figures by 30%. A sixth of Almería province (135,000 hectares) has pine forests that absorb 48 tons of CO2 per hectare. Andalucía as a region was just over their designated limits in both 2007 and 2008.

Almería Football The Almería football team are to stay at the Celtic Manor Resort at Newport in Wales whilst they are playing four "friendly" matches in early August. On August 1st they play Swansea City AFC, and Newport FC on the 4th. They play Reading FC on the 6th and Wigan Athletic FC on the 8th. The Celtic Manor Resort is where the Ryder Cup will be played in 2010.

Agriculture Figures Initial figures suggest that in the winter of 2008/9 and the spring of 2009 Almería fruit and vegetable producers invoiced 2,150 million euros for produce, increasing their invoicing from the year before by 150 million, some 8%. The reason for this is given as increased quality, resulting in an average sales price of 80 céntimos per kilo compared with 67 céntimos in 2007/8. Tomatoes were once again the biggest seller. Almería province is considered to be at the forefront of innovation and good management for fruit and vegetable production. Experts agree that only constant improvements and investment will enable good prices to be obtained.

Pioneers in Technology The Calar Alto observatory in Almería has a world importance in planetary observation. Now, it has become a pioneer in the final preparation of telescope mirrors. The European Space Agency recently sent their 'Herschel' telescope mirror from Toulouse to Almería where a fine micronthin coating of aluminium finishes off the optical properties. This mirror is 3.5 metres in diameter and weighs 10 tons. At Calar Alto they have perfected the technique of vaporizing a rod of pure aluminium in a vacuum chamber. The

More Flights Ryanair have announced that from July 14th they will operate from Almería to Madrid. They intend to fly on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday using Boeing 737s with 189 seats, and continue the flights after the summer season. Initial flight prices indicate that this will be at Ryanair's "normal" price structure where baggage, on-line booking and check-in charges have to be carefully looked at. Spanair, the Spanish flight operator, has been in financial difficulties and under major reorganization and will stop their flights from Almería to Madrid on July 12th. Meanwhile, Andalus Airlines from Málaga, is hoping to be given the licence to operate the new flights from Almería to Seville from September. This airline now plans to offer flights from Almería to Nador in Morocco for 90 euros return with a half hour flight. The company consider that this new route is highly competitive with the ferries that are dependent on sea conditions and have a longer journey time.

So Now You Know... Chupa Chups The Chupa Chups lollipop company was founded by Barcelona native Enric Bernat in 1958. The name comes from the Spanish verb chupar, meaning "to suck". Bernat got the idea of a "bonbon with a stick" from a cursing mother as her child got sticky hands from melting sweets. Within five years Bernat's sweets were being sold at 300,000 outlets. Today, 4 billion lollipops a year are sold to 150 countries. The company has 2000 employees, makes 90 percent of its sales abroad, and has a turnover of 500,000,000 euros. In July 2006, the company was acquired by the Dutch-Italian group Perfetti Van Melle. The bright logo was designed in 1969 by artist Salvador Dali. Later, celebrities like Madonna were hired to advertise.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame This is a sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, Los Angeles, that serves as an entertainment hall of fame. It is embedded with more than 2,000 five-pointed stars featuring the names of not only human celebrities but also fictional characters honored by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce for their contributions to the entertainment industry. The Walk of Fame is maintained by the self-financing Hollywood Historic Trust. The first eight stars were dedicated in September 1958 and placed in the sidewalk on the northwest corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. The Walk of Fame is nearly a 3 1/2mile (5.6km) round-trip walk. Spanish actors Antonio Banderas and Antonio Moreno have stars besides singers Julio Iglesias and Plรกcido Domingo.

Star Charts Plotting the position of stars is highly complicated. By 1859, charts produced by the German, Bonner Durchmusterung, showed the position of 324,000 stars. In 1912 another list was completed called the AGK 1 chart that showed 454,000 stars. The present version compiled from photographs is AGK 3. Celestial coordinates that show the position on a sphere give the position of stars. The equatorial system uses the celestial horizon and figures termed ascensions and declinations like latitude and longitude on Earth. Star patterns are called constellations, and given names so they can be recognized. There are 88 constellations but the stars in each have no links other than the pattern name, but they help astronomers locate other stars.

The Spanish Coat of Arms (El Escudo de España) This was adopted in 1981, replacing that of 1977 which, in turn, replaced that of 1945. It consists of a quartered shield, representing the four kingdoms merged to form Spain at the end of the 15th century: Castile, (the gold castle on red); León, (the purple lion on silver); Aragon, (the four red bars on gold); and Kingdom of Navarre. The Christian kingdom of Granada is represented by a pomegranate and in the centre is the emblem of the reigning Spanish Royal Family. The coat is crowned with the Spanish Royal Crown and guarded on each side by two columns crowned and charged with a red ribbon with the motto "plus ultra" (further beyond) in gold letters. The columns are the mythological Pillars of Hercules (of the Strait of Gibraltar), considered the end of the known World in ancient times.

Whales Whales belong to the species of Cetaceans and are large mammals. Dolphins and porpoises are still whales, but much smaller. Like other mammals, whales have to come to the surface to breathe, usually about every 10 minutes. A large sperm whale can stay under for almost 2 hours, and has sucked in 2,000 litres of air in about 2 seconds. Whales nurse their babies with their own very rich milk. Blue whale babies are 7 metres long when they are born but gain 100 kgs per day for up to 12 months. When fully grown they are often over 30 metres in length with a weight of 150 tons. They eat krill, small shrimp like creatures, and in summer they each eat 4 tons of krill a day.

Space Suits The US air force needed space suits for the U2 "spy" planes. When space travel became a reality they had a working model. A space suit is known as an 'EMU' – Extra-vehicular Mobility Unit. The outer layers protect against radiation from the sun and dust particles called micrometeoroids, as does the helmet. Oxygen circulated round the helmet and the middle layers of the space suit are inflated to press against the astronaut's body. If not, their blood would boil. The soft inner layer has tubes of water with cooling or heating available. The backpack has enough oxygen to last for 7 hours and also expels carbon dioxide. The first space suits cost 11 million dollars each with research costs.

Road News

he 'Drivers Points System', offences and fines have now been in force for two years. The Spanish Government has just passed amendments to the traffic laws that have to be ratified by the Senate and will come into force next Spring. For most drivers in Almería province probably the most important change is regarding the fines that are given. To date these are up to 90 euros for minor offences, 91 to 300 euros for serious offences and 301 to 600 euros for very serious offences, with a 30% discount for prompt payment. These fines have now been amended to nice round amounts of 100, 200 and 500 euros respectively. The discount for payment within 15 days has been increased to 50%, and a driver now has the option to pay by credit card on the spot. At present, tourists or non-residents are often invited to visit a cash machine with the police if they are fined. This measure is designed to save the traffic police this hassle and encourage quick payment by the general public. Drink-driving related fines remain unchanged. A website will be set up from which drivers can see if they have any outstanding fines and only 1 reminder will be sent rather than 3 at present.

Large cities with motorway access into the heart of the city have speed limits of either 100km/hr or less. This will now be standardised at 100km/hr but if you exceed 130km/hr you will be fined and lose 2 points. Other 2 point offences such as parking in a bus-bay or on a bend or in a tunnel(!) have been reduced to a fine only. The offence of "negligent driving" is considered difficult to interpret and whilst it remains it does not carry any loss of points. It is considered that other offences with loss of points cover anything more serious. Another important change is that when your vehicle goes for its ITV (Spanish MOT test) you must provide proof of the compulsory minimum insurance. It may be that windscreen stickers are introduced for insurance, similar to the ITV stickers. A change that would appear to have little relevance in Almería province is that if you park without paying or overstay your time limit in a "blue" parking-payment area your car can no longer be removed to a pound by a tow truck. Almería city has never done this anyway, nor Vera! A somewhat surprising change is that devices that detect radar speed traps will no longer be illegal. Devices that confuse or inhibit radar checks are still illegal. The idea behind this change appears to be that if you detect a radar trap you will slow down, so that achieves the stated object of speed traps which is to make motorists drive slower, rather than being a money making operation. A driver of a Mercedes E240 was recently stopped by the traffic police on the A-92 motorway in Almería having gone through their speed check at 211 km/hr. As this was more than 75% over the 120km/hr speed limit the 40 yr old man faced a minimum fine of 450 euros and the loss of 6 points and other sanctions. Last year another driver was stopped on the A-92 after travelling at 218 km/hr. As always, drive safely, take rests on long journeys and get your car checked over!

Summer Fire Risk

he prevention of forest or vegetation fires goes on all year, but June 1st to October 15th sees special attention as it is regarded as the time of most risk.

On June 16th, Infoca were called to a fire between Benazalón and Alcudia de Monteagud in the mountains not far from Macael, following an inhabitant burning agricultural waste. After nearly 4 hours, 42 specialist fire fighters, land vehicles, 5 helicopters and 2 aircraft extinguished the fire. 40 hectares of scrubland were destroyed. Almost at the same time at Alboloduy, on the way to the Alpujarras, another fire was reported. This time 35 hectares caught fire with various specialist teams responding who summoned an amphibious plane to help. On June 25th, Berja had another similar fire with a smaller one near Sorbas the same day, again! A major fire in Sorbas on June 27th saw the whole team turn out with everything they had and 70 people were evacuated as a precaution. This was the largest of several fires in the area during the previous week and arson was suspected. Rafael Yebra, in command of the 2009 Almería team, is quite worried. He considers that the risk of fires this year is higher than normal as the winter and spring rain has increased vegetation. Fires can claim lives and sadly, two experienced helicopter pilots were killed in Barcelona on June 22nd after their helicopter crashed whilst transporting water to a fire. Rafael asks all inhabitants to be extra careful and mindful of the danger of fires.

A Very Expensive Project

he plan to put the rail track and main station in Almería city underground has been intensely debated for over 10 years. City councillors and central government, often of different political parties as is the case now, along with the Junta de Andalucia have tossed this project back and forth. The rail tracks near the station take up a lot of space and a are definite barrier to getting from one side to the other. In 1998, the urban plan for Almería city allowed for the initial project of underground work and by 2001 a pact was agreed in Seville between the different political parties and central government. In 2003, just before the city and province municipal elections a plan was submitted from central government and in 2005 a study of costs was authorised. By 2007, with new local elections the project was top of every agenda again. Finally, in 2008, the State, Junta de Andalucia and Almería council signed a "document of intent". In 2007, the cost was estimated at 120 million euros and the likely date for the completion was suggested as being 2010. Now, in 2009, the cost has been re-calculated as 244 million euros with a likely completion date of 2014/15 when the "AVE" high-speed train should arrive in Almería city. Santa Justa station at Seville

Part of the debate has been who was providing the money! The State Ministry of Transport and Railways have agreed to contribute 70 million euros and "donate" free of charge the 125,000 sq. metres of land, freed on the surface near the city centre. The Junta de Andalucia agreed to contribute 20 million in 2007 that was supposed to be 20% of the cost then. This figure is unchanged, but council officials have been quick to say that 20 million is not 20% of 244 million! Almería city were calculating under the "protocol" agreement that they would need 30 million, without getting into serious debt. The difference between these assumed contributions and the cost is ideally to come from selling the freed land for commercial activities, including housing. This could raise 115 million euros assuming 30% of the released land did not have to be used for subsidised "council" housing. In theory this 30% is not negotiable, but the Junta de Andalucía appears to be agreeable to not enforce this requirement. So critics are claiming the costs are "sky high", "totally unjustified" and the result of "technicians calculations". They point out that the planned tunnel is 2.5 kilometres and Málaga new station and underground work when the AVE train arrived in 2007 was 115 million for 2.3 kilometres. Murcia cost 257 million but for 6.5 kilometres and only the Santander project is planned to cost more at 365 million. In the face of this criticism the Ministry of Transport released to the press, details of their study and artists impressions of the new station based on the one at Málaga or the very modernistic Santa Justa station in Seville. The cost of the impressive new station on top of 2 floors of underground parking is given as 124 million, just over 50% of the total cost. Another 50 million is estimated for the port rail link. Further and extended meetings are scheduled and demanded by the critics!

DVD of the Month Max Manus: Man of War

The wartime exploits of Norwegian resistance hero Max Manus are grittily celebrated in this Boys’ Ownstyle tale of derring-do. After fighting the Russians in Finland’s Winter War, Manus joined the fearless underground group The Oslo Gang, carrying out attacks on docked German warships as well as his country’s own Quisling collaborators. Despite a title that suggests it’s about a low rent wrestler fighting a minor bout on ITV’s 1970s classic World of Sport, this is an intriguing tale of wartime courage. Apparently seen by a quarter of the Norwegian population in just six weeks, it follows resistance leader Max Manus (Hennie) and his flamboyant sabotage of the Nazi war effort. After careless leaflet distribution on the streets of the Norwegian capital, he is packed off to Scotland to be trained as a commando by the British, specialising in sabotage. Together with his “Oslo Gang”, Manus used canvas canoes to infiltrate heavily guarded harbours and attach limpet mines to the hulls of German vessels docked in Norway. They also destroyed the Employment Office Oslo archive in broad daylight, crucially frustrating Hitler’s efforts to mobilise Norwegian teenagers and send them to the Eastern Front. Hennie plays Manus as a determined adversary whose cavalier attitude often courted trouble – his nervous problems and subsequent alcoholism are only lightly touched on. The similarly themed – which told the tale of two Norwegian resistance assassins – was a more emotionally complex affair while this sticks to straight-down-the-line storytelling. Manus’ chief adversary, Gestapo chief Sigfried Fehmer (Duken), is a less successful creation. The film-makers claim they intended to avoid caricature but he never comes across as anything other than a charmingly ruthless Nazi killing machine. Nevertheless, it’s a cracking yarn rippingly told. If it's havoc wreaked on Hitler's goosestepping invaders you want, then take it to the Max.

The 2009 'Itinerate' travelling exhibitions of Photography, Sculpture, Painting and Recycled Art visit Arboleas, Fiñana, Huércal Overa, Santa Fe de Mondújar and Turre. The Photography tour is at Arboleas until August 9th and HuércalOvera from August 13th. Sculpture is at Turre until July 26th and Fiñana from August 12th. Painting is at Santa Fe until July 26th and Arboleas from August 6th. Recycled Art is at Fiñana until July 26th and Turre from August 5th. The tours are sponsored by the Junta de Andalucía and rotate until January 2010 and each exhibition is for 1 month.

The 5th Pulpop Music Festival on July 11th at Roquetas Bull Ring includes Cooper, Elastic Bands, The Right Ons, Dorian, DJ Dongonzalo and Moon Unit. As in other years there will also be a pop-theme market. Summer Events in Roquetas. The 8th 'Events for Summer' programme includes 28 open-air films, 27 children's theatre performances and over 40 music dates. Events include the 'Classic Music Jazz Band' on July 9th followed by a 3-day marine market from July10th-12th, and a Flamenco show with Sonia Miranda on July 23rd. 'La Conjura' perform Celtic Music on July 30th and Carmen Rubí has a flamenco concert on August 6th. There is a medieval market from August 14th-16th. August 27th is a Tango Night concert. All above events take place at the Castillo de Santa Ana (Roquetas castle). Concerts start at 10pm and markets from 7pm. Dance 1st Festival of Dance. Almería hosts this dance festival from July 10th –18th, at the Maestro Padilla Municipal Auditorium. July 10th has Víctor Ullate the famous choreographer and the Madrid Community Ballet. July 14th is the Almería International Dance Symposium, and July 16th the dance company of Antonio 'El Pipa' perform. The event closes on July 18th with the Corella Ballet group from Castilla and León. Angel Corella is the principal Ballet dancer from the American Ballet Theatre.
