The Gap after Easter
Thewet and windy weather over Easter was very bad for the religious processions in Almería city with various ones cancelled, cut short or re-routed. Hotels suffered as well with the booked 80% occupancy going down to 60% with cancellations, and this had an effect on restaurant and bar trade.
Following Easter there is always a lull in the tourist trade, and restaurants are reporting a substantial decrease in clients that they have to ride out. In our ‘In the News’ section we comment on the increased number of flights into Almería airport.
Good news following the Easter storms was that many reservoirs in Andalucía, although not the one at Cuevas del Almanzora, went up by 60%, but still a very low percentage of their total capacity. Juanma Moreno, the President of Andalucía, announced that there would be no need for domestic and agricultural water to be brought in ships from Cartagena, in the immediate future. Work at the Carboneras and Málaga ports to enable ships to discharge water is still going ahead. Restrictions on using water in various municipalities in our area continues, but it doesn’t seem likely, at present, that this will be extended to other municipalities. The PSOE political party, in opposition in the Andalucía parliament, are claiming that there is no longer a need for any restrictions.
High winds and sunshine meant that the amount of electricity from renewable sources rocketed up, and the price to consumers on the PVPC variable rate tariff went down substantially. Electricity from hydro-electric dams also contributed to lower costs. We comment on the very low cost of electricity in our ‘In the News’ section. Apart from being free for long periods of time, there were unique hours when the cost of one kW/h (the electricity needed for a 1,000-watt appliance for one hour) was a negative amount, never experienced before. For these short periods of time, suppliers of electricity (particularly nuclear power stations) sold electricity to ‘Red España’ (the Spanish national grid) at a loss! In our
‘In the News’ section we comment on four very large new solar farms to be built near Tabernas, that will dramatically improve the contribution from the sun.
The time period for completing ‘La Renta’, the annual tax return, finishes on July 1st and relates to the calendar year in 2023. In our ‘In the News’ section we detail who has to make this declaration and some new allowances.
Concerts of different types are now increasing as the year progresses, and we list ones that may be of interest in our ‘What’s On’ section. In an article we explain how young people in Spain are now flocking back to large live concerts and prepared to pay for expensive tickets. Experts state that this is a reaction to no concerts taking place during the pandemic.
During May, many Roman Catholic children have their “first communion” and some Spanish restaurants host a celebration meal afterwards. If your favourite restaurant has a large party, it could be for this reason. Wednesday, May 1st, “Day of the Worker”, is a national “red day” on the calendar in Spain when town halls, banks and many offices will be shut, and Sunday, May 5th is Spanish Mother’s Day (always the first Sunday in May). Wednesday, May 15th is a major fiesta day in Madrid, the day of “San Isidro”. He was a farmer who according to legend greatly helped the poor people in 1172. Mojácar and other villages have a “Romeria” to celebrate this, when decorated farm vehicles go into the countryside for a picnic.

Saving Water
We have commented previously on the measures to save domestic water and how this applies to municipalities. On March 27th, after instructions from the Junta de Andalucía, various town halls in our area published a municipal ‘Bando’ which is an official notification for inhabitants. In our area this applied to Albox, Olula del Río, Arboleas, Lubrin, Los Gallardos, Antas and Taberno. At the time, there were no restrictions that applied to Carboneras, Garrucha, Mojácar, Cuevas, HuércalOvera, Vera and Zurgena. The restrictions are no more than 200 litres a day per person of potable water, with no water used for garden irrigation, no water used in fountains that do not completely re-cycle the water, no washing cars at home (this can still be done at petrol stations) and filling an empty private swimming pool or one in a community. Municipalities cannot wash streets with potable water and the same restrictions apply to fountains and irrigation of garden areas. Pools can be filled at hotels, municipal ones, health centres, and at registered tourist accommodation. As we mention in an article, ‘Galasa’, who supply the potable water, cannot determine how much water is being used as they have no information on who lives at a particular property, or whether they have people staying with them temporarily to see family members or for holidays. The Junta de Andalucía hope that people in the affected municipalities will be responsible citizens and save water.
Summer Flights
The official summer season for flights in Spain started on March 31st and finishes on October 27th. As regards Almería airport there is the potential for 655,000 seats and 5,000 incoming and outgoing flights to 23 destinations. These go to 15 international cities, and 8 within Spain. 47% are internal flights with a capacity of 306,000 seats and 53% are external ones with 349,000 seats. According to ‘AENA’, the Spanish airport authority, their estimates are that the UK will have 28.4% (185,600) passengers,
followed by Belgium (48,200), the Netherlands (31,100), France (22,600), the Czech Republic (21,200), Luxembourg (14,200) and Poland (9,000). As for domestic routes, regular flights are maintained throughout the year to Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Bilbao, Palma de Mallorca, Melilla, Santiago de Compostela, and Zaragoza, and a new destination is Asturias. International flights go to Brussels and Charleroi in Belgium, London (Stansted and Gatwick), Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester in the UK, Bratislava in Slovakia, Warsaw in Poland, Keflavik in Iceland and Luxembourg. New destinations are Porto in Portual, Paris, Prague and Brno in the Czech Republic, Rotterdam and Albania. As an incentive, for these six new ones, AENA have scrapped any landing fees for the next three years and in 2024 for airlines with passenger numbers that exceed their 2023 totals. Air Nostrum, Ryanair and Jet2 are the companies with the largest numbers of flights.
Good Rubbish Recycling
The company ‘Ecoembes’ collect waste material put in the yellow and blue rubbish containers, and the amount went up in 2023 to a total of 1.68 million tonnes, 3.5% better than 2022 and 12% better than 2019. 734 tonnes were put in the yellow containers for plastic, cartons and cans, and 697,000 tonnes in the blue containers for paper and cardboard. Items collected by their lorries go to 495 re-cycling centres where it is sorted and processed. 60% came from the containers in streets, 13% from places such as stadiums, parks and leisure facilities, and 27%, amounting to 452,000 tonnes, was separated from general rubbish where the recycled items had been wrongly deposited. Apart from this being the wrong thing to do, a spokesperson from Ecoembes stated that 32% of items put in the yellow containers were not the right ones. The recycling saved 9.84 million MWh of energy, 15.53 million m3 of water and prevented the emission of 1.7 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere that would be needed to produce new items.

Mojácar Health Centre Roundabout
Lat month we pointed out that buses, taxis and vehicles coming out of the new bus station and the health centre cannot turn left. If they want to, to get to the petrol station, the road to the Garrucha /Los Gallardos bypass, or the village, they have to go down to the Parque Commercial roundabout and come back up. On April 10th the Almería diputación (county council) announced that a roundabout costing 350,000 euros will be built at the entrance / exits. It is accepted that this is necessary for vehicles including buses and ambulances, particularly in the summer months with the arrival of the large number of tourists. Apart from the new roundabout, there will be improved access for pedestrians and steps up to the health centre. In 2025 the new beach bypass road alongside the petrol station should be in operation, designed to reduce queues down to the Parque Commercial and give access to various urbanisations and houses behind the beach road.
No More “Golden Visas”
The Spanish government are scrapping the “golden visas” for people who come to Spain and purchase a property for more than 500,000 euros. 997 people obtained this visa in 2021, but numbers went up to 2,017 in 2022 and 3,273 in 2023 making a total for these two years of 5,290. During January this year there were 342 golden visas granted for property purchases totalling 255 million euros. The government consider that there is considerable property speculation amongst these buyers, particularly by Chinese and Russians, and it is having a detrimental effect on the property market in Barcelona, Madrid, Marbella, Alicante, Valencia, the Balearic islands, and other large cities, and forcing up prices. In 2023 these purchases in Marbella were 7% of the total, 5.3% in Barcelona and 10% in the Balearic islands.
Legalising the “Undocumented”
A bill will shortly become law, designed to regularise people living in Spain who are not legal
as part of a “fast track” initiative. Figures are difficult to quantify, but a suggested number is 500,000 to 700,000. They will be invited to apply to become fully legal and enjoy all the benefits of normal residents and workers in Spain, and it will apply to people who have lived in Spain before the end of 2020. In Almería province an estimated 18,000 to 20,000 are illegal workers from before this date. Many of these people work in agriculture and estimates are 8,000 in Níjar and 6,000 in El Ejido. As they are not documented they are part of the black economy, often paid poor wages, and not registered with the Social Security Department. They do however, form a basic workforce that is very important for agriculture. If they become legal, they will be entitled to be paid the minimum wage, have holidays, unemployment benefit after the requisite period, along with maternal and paternal leave. In 2023 inspectors who went to construction sites in our province found 2,000 workers had no official paperwork and were being illegally employed, but the true number is far more. With these people made legal and their employers paying into the Social Security system throughout Spain, this will probably see an additional income for the state of 950 million euros.
Solar Eclipses in Spain
There has been major and probably excessive publicity in the media recently when there was a total eclipse in the US, but these are not uncommon. In Spain on March 29th next year there will be a 15% to 30% partial eclipse depending on where people live, and a total eclipse from central to northern Spain in a band of 294km on August 12th, 2026, that will last for 2 minutes 18 seconds. Another total eclipse takes place on August 2nd, 2027, over central to southern Spain in a band of 258km lasting for 6 minutes 23 seconds. An annular eclipse is when there is a ring of the sun around the moon because it does not totally cover the sun, and this will occur on January

26th, 2028. The Spanish National Eclipse Commission will work with organisations related to tourism, transport, logistics and safety.
Organ Donations
The Director at the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería recently thanked a family who had agreed to transplants from their dead male relative. He stated, “The solidarity of the donor’s family, going through a very hard ordeal, has facilitated this process.” This enabled five other people to benefit, and this included persons on a register of people needing transplants in various other autonomous communities, with one needed urgently. When a person dies in a hospital, transplant co-ordinators will talk to the family, stress that transplants can help other people, give the family the opportunity to consider that this will help them grieve, and they will receive the gratitude of the (anonymous) recipients. A person who wants to give organs or tissue on their death can ask for a donor card to be issued at a health centre, or tell their family that they want to do this. In Madrid there is a National Transplant Centre that collate all the transplants for people who need them, and they have a “zero category” that applies to a person who will die if no organ is available quickly. A very high number of family members agree to transplants on a death.
New Anti-smoking Regulations
Monicá García, the Spanish Health Minister, has announced a broad agreement with the autonomous communities (in our case the Junta de Andalucía) to introduce new anti-smoking regulations. The agreement is described as being a “road map”. Eventually, the regulations passed in parliament will apply from 2024-2027, entitled the ‘Integrated Plan for the Prevention and Control of Tobacco’. As yet there are no concrete changes announced but it has been suggested that publicity for e-cigarettes will be curtailed and they cannot be sold at festivals or promoted on social media. Further places
where smoking is banned may be beaches, university campuses, hospitality terraces and parks. There will probably be a hike in tax, and manufacturers of cigarettes cannot show large logos. A proposal that smoking should be banned in vehicles when there were children or pregnant women on board was not adopted.
Easter Battery Problems
Over Easter, many motorists with all electric vehicles experienced major delays in getting them charged up. In particular, this applied to ‘Tesla’ cars where the owners were using the dedicated Tesla charging stations at Cuenca and Albacete. Many Tesla car owners prefer to use the ones intended for their vehicles and plan their route accordingly. In Cuenca, only five of the ten charging points giving 150kW were working and these are not the most modern ones. With two cars connected to one of the units, the power drops down to 75kW for each of them. New Tesla chargers are much better, with 250-300kW. There were two-hour queues at Cuenca and one-hour queues at Albacete. A Tesla spokesperson stated that this was a “one-off problem”, but with summer coming it may be repeated. A few months ago in the US, with temperatures well below zero, Tesla owners found that their batteries would not charge up even over several hours. One driver said that the Tesla charging points were a graveyard, and many owners sent for a tow-
In the
truck to get them home. There were reports of fisticuffs by disgruntled owners at some charging points! According to the ‘DGT’ (Spain’s Traffic Authority) there were 175,000 electric vehicles in Spain last January 31st, but not enough public charging points. Arturo Pérez de Lucia, general manager of ‘Aedive’, the Electric Mobility Employers’ Association disagrees. In his opinion, the current network is “more than sufficient” for all travel, and there are now 30,000 public charging points only in use 10% of the available charging times. He pointed out that Tesla drivers at Easter would have found alternative charging points if they had looked on ‘Electromaps’. He pointed out that Endesa, Iberdrola and Zunder had no waiting times. The ‘DGT’ presented a traffic sign showing a charging point in 2022, but they have not been entirely rolled out. The Minister for Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera, considers that there has to be a national map of charging points and a universal payment system, ideally with credit cards, not different apps. A spokesperson for Endesa who have 40% fast or superfast charging points, complains that getting permission is a nightmare that can take two years.
House Prices
In certain parts of Almería province and in our area in particular, house prices are now back up to the level before 2008 when the bubble burst. In November 2006, the average price of a property in our province was 1,850 euros per m2. After the crash, prices went down sharply and in 2018 it had gone down to 1,055. Locally, pre2008 prices are now being exceeded in Mojácar, Pulpí, Vera and areas of Almería city. In Mojácar, with the highest rise, the average price in March was 2,020 euros per m2, on the playa 2,130 and at Marina de la Torre 1,900. In Pulpí, the average price of 1,800 euros per m2 is up 500 euros on prices eight years ago. The highest average price of 2,415 euros per m2 is in the El Playazo area of Vera playa, followed by 1,690 in Las Marinas. In the most sought-after areas in Almería city the
current average prices are 2,261 euros per m2, also more than before 2008. Current average prices in Carboneras per m2 are 1,335 euros, in Garrucha 1,300, and in Roquetas de Mar 1,280.
La ‘Renta’
The period for making the annual tax return in Spain, known as ‘La Renta’ continues until July 1st, not June 30th as is normal because this is a Sunday. The 2024 declaration relates to income and allowances for the 2023 financial year that started on January 1st. For people able to navigate the system on-line this is an option, or an appointment can be made at the tax office in Huércal-Overa. The tax authority ‘Hacienda’ sends out an estimate of tax due after allowances, but this may not include allowances that they are not aware of and can be amended. One of these is a 15% deduction from the cost of purchasing an electric vehicle under 20,000 euros or installing a charging point (less any grants under the Moves III scheme) providing this was done after June 30th, 2023, and there are deductions for improving energy efficiency in the home. In general, people who finish up with a taxable income from one employer of less than 22,000 euros are exempt and less than 15,000 euros from more than one employer. This has gone up from 14,000 in the 2022 tax year because the minimum wage has increased. This year, self-employed persons have to make a 2023 tax return whatever their income, but there are deductions for a new company. Similarly to the 2022 tax year, self-employed persons can take off 7.5% for expenses “difficult to justify”. Pensions count as income and have to be declared, along with income from worldwide assets. If a property has been sold, an inheritance has been received, or a pension plan has been cashed in this has to be declared. Rental income has to be specified but there are deductions for expenses. There are also allowances for women with children and school materials. Gestors, who handle some legal proceedings, and asesorías (accountants) will complete the tax return for

you, and tell you whether for a couple it is better to make a joint declaration or individual ones. The average fee for a private person is about 50 euros, or 100 euros for a self-employed person with more complicated paperwork. Quite often, the fee paid will result in a tax saving that is more than the cost. Companies that will carry this out can be found in our directory under ‘Accountants’ and ‘Legal Services’.
Bolivian Cruise Ship Passengers
The MSC cruise ship ‘Armonia’ recently arrived in Barcelona with 69 Bolivian passengers who had false visas to enter Spain and had boarded the ship in Brazil. This was discovered when they left the ship and they were subsequently detained with deportation a likely action. MSC sent a second ship from Italy to Barcelona to temporarily house the 69 people and provide them with accommodation, food, drink and healthcare if needed. The other ‘Armonia’ passengers complained that the cruise ship, final destination Croatia, had been unable to depart until the following day and they had lost one day of the cruise. 275 Brazilian passengers were flown to Rome so that they did not miss their return flights. A spokesperson for MSC stated that, “At the beginning of the voyage these Bolivian citizens appeared to have proper documentation to come on board in Brazil and the cruise line greatly regretted the problems this had caused.” Relatives of the travellers without valid visas, who were waiting for them at the port in Barcelona, claimed that they had been victims of a deception when they booked the trip.
The Vera Quarry
A big row has broken out between Vera Council and the Junta de Andalucía. The Junta has given environmental permission for a company to undertake open-pit mining in a quarry for the extraction of precious metals. It is next to the Media Legua area that is only 200m from the site of the new ‘AVE’ (high speed train) station. The council claim that they cannot stop this,
as permission has been granted by the Junta Department of Mines, but they will do everything possible to prevent it happening. They claim it will result in dust carried on the wind that will affect the station and respiratory problems for nearby neighbours. Councillors have met with a delegate from the Environmental and Mines department who has stressed that “Right now, the permission is only about the unified environmental authorisation, part of a very broad and extensive dossier that would take several years before it is finally resolved”.
Private Hospitals Join Forces
The two private hospitals in Almería have joined forces to operate on patients in the Spanish state health system who have been waiting too long according to the guidelines. When patients are referred to them, they will decide between them which hospital will carry out the operations. The aim is to take 6,000 people off the waiting lists at the normal hospitals, and the Junta de Andalucía have a budget price to pay for the operations in the private sector of 17 million euros. If private hospitals operate on these types of patients until the end of this year, the cost could rise to 40 million euros. The Junta de Andalucía Health department state that 13% more operations are being carried out in normal hospitals and this is 26% better than waiting figures last year. Nevertheless, they cannot themselves quickly deal with the backlog.
Good Employment Figures
The Spanish economy grows with the number of people in work who are paying into the Social Security system. At the end of March, 193,000 more people were in work, which brought the number of employed people throughout Spain up to just under 21 million. 33,000 people came off the unemployment register, making this total down to 2.7 million. This is the lowest number since 2008 and part of the reason is given as the hotel and restaurant trade setting on people for Easter, which this year was early.

Sierra Nevada’s Sun & Snow Weekend
Sierra Nevada experienced three days dedicated to electronic music at Sun & Snow Weekend on April 5th - 7th with 6,000 attendees. A tribute to the European club scene, and especially Berlin, in the programming of the Fifth Anniversary of the festival, which due to weather conditions, was forced to modify the programming and schedules. A selection of national and international artists managed to create a club atmosphere at this boutique festival at the well-known Granada ski station.
The Sun & Snow Weekend organisation worked tirelessly to be able to offer other alternatives to venues such as Altitude or Housy Van, which weren’t able to start due to the weather. However, an effort was made to schedule the majority of performances on the stages located in the Peñones parking lot: The Mountain Club and Igloo Stage, which continued normally, extending their hours.
On Friday, April 5th, Natural Language, Skatman and Mala Ika stood out on the Igloo Stage, with Paquita Gordon closing. The Mountain Club featured sets like Dj Holographic or Robag Wruhme, or the back to back set by Jime Jules and Trikk. One of the most anticipated performances was at the end of the night, with Krystal Klear.
After the pre-party in the afternoon at the GH Monachil with sets by Rober Peinado and Techniscje Loef. Sun & Snow began its second day on the two stages located in the Los Peñones parking lot. Sets by artists such as Techniscje Loef, Leafar Legov, Hunee or Martin Herrs, were performed this day where the electro techno set by Hunee, the Hybrid set format by Curses or Keope who performed in live format on The Igloo Stage have especially shone.
One of the stars of the night was undoubtedly John Talabot, with a set that was a succession of rhythms in the pure Catalan style, one of the national artists with the greatest international success who has been one of the most applauded. The festival closed with an exhibition of the most hypnotic sounds with Orbe’s set at Igloo Stage or Or:la, which closed its set with the stage full of people.
The farewell day on Sunday, April 7th, featured B2B sets such as Rober Peinado B2B Gabi or Otter B2B Cynthia Kardenas. From the groove of Musumeci, the project of Mauro Di Martino, the purely Teutonic sound of Paramide or the farewell to the edition of Sun & Snow Weekend, by Close the Element.
Sun & Snow Weekend brought electronic music to Sierra Nevada as the station closed its season. Despite the difficult weather conditions, the Weekend defied this by maintaining its programming with the slopes of the mountains as an exceptional natural setting, integrated in a way that is totally respectful of the environment.
Mobiles, Internet, Video Games
Statistics reveal that in 2023 some 74% of children in Andalucía between the ages of 10 to 15 had mobile phones, up 5% from 2022. In the age group10-15 in 2023 a total of 95% accessed the internet and 93% used computers. At the end of 2023 in Andalucía there were 187
In the
people in a program to reduce their dependency / addiction for users of mobile phones, the internet and video games, and 72 were minors. Of the 187, some 43% (with 38 minors) were addicted to mobile phones (nomophobia), 39% to using video games (with 29 minors) and 18% with a severe addiction to internet use (5 minors). The authorities state that people entering a corrective program do so because they are desperate to stop their addiction, or are causing disruption in the family unit. The therapy sessions are to get addicted people to limit their use to set periods of time, and keep a log. In the case of parents of a minor they should help them do this, and there are psychologists and social workers who work with them. In some parts of Spain in busy traffic areas, traffic lights have a screen about waist height that shows when it is safe to cross (and the countdown of seconds remaining if applicable). People glued to their mobile phones can see the screens without looking up at the actual traffic lights!
Old Age in Almería
As of January 1st, data from the Spanish Institute of Statistics reveal that the life expectancy in Almería province is 81.3 years, five more than in 1991. This breaks down to 78.6 for men and 84.1 for women and there were 5,487 people over the age of 90. Reasons given for this are the climate with more outdoor activities, vitamin D from the sun and better diet with more vegetables, white meat and fish. Roquetas de Mar has grown from 53,815 inhabitants in 2003 to 106,510 today, El Ejido from 61,265 to 89,975 and Almeria capital from 176,727 to 200,578. In these three municipalities alone, they have added more than 104,000 inhabitants, or in other words, more than half of all the inhabitants that Almeria has gained in the last two decades.
High Temperatures in Almería Province
On Friday, March 22nd, the official recorded temperature in El Ejido was 30.2 °C and at
Almería airport 30.0 °C. These temperatures were in fourth and fifth place throughout Andalucia, and at Almería airport it was the second highest since 1966, when temperatures there were first registered. In El Ejido, during the following night, the temperature did not drop below 28.1°C and by 6am it was 29.2°C. This is what is called, in meteorological language, “an equatorial or torrid night”, with minimum temperatures of 25°C degrees or higher. It is a rare phenomenon even in the middle of summer, and very unusual in early spring.
Good Sea Water
Just before Easter the Spanish Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs took samples of sea water at 361 places in 62 municipalities in Andalucía where swimming is prevalent at 276 of them. In Almería province 91 samples were taken in 13 municipalities with 78 swimming areas. The overall result was that they all passed the various tests. The exhaustive analysis took into account compliance with current regulations including microbiological and macroscopic aspects, transparency, colour, presence of mineral oils, persistent foams, floating solids and organic remains.
Renewable Energy
Last month we commented on the major reduction in the cost of electricity that can occur when strong winds and sunny days coexist and our electricity comes from wind turbines and photo-voltaic solar panels. Almería province is close to having a potential of 600MW (a MW is one million watts) from the sun, 9% of the contribution in Andalucía. 576MW comes from solar panel farms that cover 91,075m2 and 24MW from people who have solar panels for their own use or on public buildings. This is a very steep rise as it was only 300MW two years ago. At the Cosentino factory at Cantoria they have installed the largest photo-voltaic array in Spain and one of the largest in Europe as part of their decarbonisation strategy for
In the News
2030-2050. The output is up to 20MW that should amount to 34,000MW over one year and provide 25% of the electricity they need. Sunny days are more predictable than wind, but wind turbines have the capacity to provide 511MW, one of the highest amounts in Andalucía, and the three wind farms at Serón can supply 50MW. Offshore wind farms provide the most power, but there is an official map that shows coastal areas where they can’t be built. This is opposite natural parks such as Gabo de Gata, locations where they are a lot of migrant birds, and places that interfere with maritime shipping lanes or ports. The extremely high-tech Spanish company Indra have designed a radar system using AI that detects flocks of birds up to 5km away and can shut down the turbines if necessary. With the continual drought, hydro-electric dams only managed to supply 8.4MW in our province, just 1.3% in Andalucía. In mainland Spain in 2023 overall, renewable energy provided over 50% of the demand.
Dreambeach Coaches
The organisers of the Dreambeach Music Festival from August 1st-4th have announced that there will be coaches laid on from 25 cities for fans coming to the festival. The cost will be 40-100 euros depending on the distance and will arrive on the first day of the festival and will return at the end. There will also be coaches from towns and villages in our area. Headline performers announced so far include David Guetta, Fátima Hajji and Nicki Nicole along with Prodigy, Hernan Cattaneo, Hybrid Minds, Kobosil, Koven, Marauda, Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Andrea Oliva, Apashe, Brennan Heart, Code Black, Coone, Ida Engerg, Klangkuenstler, Maria Bo, Morad, Morten, Sasasas, Topic, Hardwell, Nico Moreno, Hedex, I Hate Models, Natos & Waor, Andrés Campo, Acraze, Daría Kolosova, Dimitri Said and Justus.
Coach Drivers Wanted
The coach company ‘Alsa’ is looking to recruit 150 new female professional drivers including
ones from our province. There is a completely free course that is for two months between May and September and the successful applicants will have 140 hours of tuition for the “D” licence, 20 hours driving a vehicle, and have to pass the professional “CAP” physical aptitude test. Candidates have to be aged 24 or over, have a driving licence with between 10-15 points and live in the area where the drivers are needed. The new employees will be given indefinite contracts with full time working.
More Operations
To try and reduce hospital waiting lists, the Junta de Andalucía have announced a new health plan with 283 million euros available, of which 37 million is for Almería province. The aim is to reduce the list of people waiting for surgery who are over the official waiting times by 60%. By the end of the year, it is intended that 2,300 people will have had their operations and only 2,600 will still be waiting. There will be a push for operations to be done that are for cataracts, hernias and knee surgery as almost all these operations are done at the day hospital where patients are discharged in the evening and only a few people are admitted for 48 hours. The official waiting times for most surgical operations is no more than 180 days, for operations such as a hip replacement or to have tonsils taken out it is a maximum of 120 days, and 90 days for heart surgery. If patients go over this period, they will be treated at a private hospital free of charge, and we refer to this in another news item. La Inmaculada hospital in Huércal-Overa now has an advanced echocardiography ultrasound machine in use in their cardiology department for outpatients and inpatients when needed. This gives a very good image of what the heart and all the associated valves and arteries are doing, making a diagnosis much quicker.

in numerals. This was put on social media and a person who saw it forwarded it to the “colabora@guardiacivil.org” email address that is for people to send incriminating photos indicating a crime. The Guardia Civil police identified a building in the video as being on the A7 near El Ejido, and determined that the car was a top-end luxury Mercedes. From this, the driver was identified and arrested. He faces losing his licence from 1-4 years, a prison term of 3-6 months or a community service order of 31-90 days, and a large fine.
Vehicle Fraud
The Línea Directa’s VII Insurance Fraud Barometer 2024 has reported that 8% of vehicle accident claims in our province are fraudulent, and this is one of the highest percentages in Spain. The person making these claims is very often a person under the age of 30, unemployed or in a precarious job. The fraudulent claims will often include prior damage that is not related to the accident, and is more frequent in cars aged 11-14 years. These claims peak in October to November with Mondays to Tuesdays the most popular days, so these raise a flag at the insurance company. Apart from damage to a vehicle some drivers or passengers report a permanent disability when in reality they are able to continue with their normal jobs. Criminal gangs will often brake heavily in traffic, so that the car behind runs into them and they may do this multiple times having insured the vehicle with different companies, always making a claim for injuries. In 40% of false claims the perpetrator sees nothing wrong with making a claim and 16% justify this by saying the premiums are too high. 63% show no remorse when they are caught out.
Jet Ski Competition Cancelled
Carboneras was going to be the venue for the Spanish and Andalucía Jet Ski Championship in early April. The organisers pulled out after the Junta de Andalucía denied permission for Carboneras to host the event on various
grounds. They stated that protection measures for the island of San Andrés, declared a natural monument, were not included in the application, nor prohibited elements such as the refuelling of the jet skis on beaches. There was no time to submit an amended proposal because the application was made less than a month before the scheduled date, compared to the four month-notice required for this type of activity. Opposition councillors complained that this was another example of gross negligence by the ruling mayor and councillors, and they had falsely publicised the event with a great deal of interest by hotels and restaurants that were now left high and dry.
The Carboneras Desalination Plant
In an article we deal with the water situation between Acuamed, the owners of the Carboneras desalination plant, and Galasa who distribute the water in our area. On Monday, April 1st, the management of the plant was transferred to Sacyr Agua who will run the plant for 48 months, after their bid was accepted with a price of 29.7 million euros. They will implement new building work, supervise the installation of modern equipment to increase the output, and install solar panels to save conventional electricity costs, with a grant from the Spanish ‘Next Generation’ funding. The plant has 12 Pelton production lines that are being improved with isobaric chambers. This is already in place on two of the lines to provide a greater capacity and the other ten will be similarly modified.

The Easter Processions
Many towns and villages have an Easter procession when religious statues are carried through streets. The ones in Almería city are very elaborate, and during Holy Week there is a strict timetable and designated route for all the processions, finishing up at the cathedral. This year, as in other years, rain was a problem on the Monday but when this happens the statues are covered in large sheets of polythene. On following days high winds of up to 90km/h were a major problem. Some processions were cancelled, others took place later than planned and the routes were cut short in many cases. A few years ago, the national daily newspaper ‘El Pais’ had a front-page photo of young ladies in Almería city in tears when their procession was cancelled. The town hall co-ordinated the changes, and the meteorology station at the airport provided weather forecasts that they continually update for flights. On one of the routes two palm trees and a traffic light blew over. Fortunately, this was before the procession had started. With cancellations at hotels because of the bad weather, their 80% of booked rooms fell down to 60%.
A Missing Man Located
In January 2003 in Bilbao a man disappeared and the family eventually reported him missing in 2009. They stated that he was itinerate in his lifestyle, often joined fairground companies but he had no regular income. Police took DNA samples from his son but they never matched up with DNA from dead people since 2003. He was not listed in any civil register as being dead and he was not on any ‘padrón’ (the official list of inhabitants in any municipality). Finally, at the end of 2023 it was flagged that he had renewed his identity document and further investigations revealed that he had a bank account in Caparroso in Navarre where a pension was paid in every month and he made withdrawals. This enabled police to locate him on March 19th after his bank contacted them. He was in good health and since
2007 had been living with a fairground family travelling round Northern Spain. In cases like this, where an adult voluntarily leaves a family that in this case was a separated wife, children and siblings, they have the option to contact their family if they want to. Otherwise, the family is told that the missing person has been located, but not where they are living. The man agreed to contact his sister but as he did not possess a mobile phone the police did this for him. Subsequently, they both met up after 21 years.
Mojácar, a Happiest Town
Every year March 20th is international “Happiness Day”. In Spain ,YouGov publish details of places where the inhabitants are happiest, they have a good lifestyle and minimal stress. 35 towns were on a list of the top ones and Mojácar was in 11th place. This is the only town in Almería province on the list, but 13 are in Andalucía. The happiest town in Spain was Ronda in Málaga province. As regards tourism, Roquetas de Mar is one of the most popular places in Spain. The ‘INE’ (Spanish Institute of Statistics) collate hotel figures and in 2023 Roquetas de Mar had 508,000 people staying there, the 34th highest in Spain, 7th in Andalucía, and number one in the province.
Free Electricity
From data provided by the ‘OMIE’ Spanish Market Indicator Organisation for our province, on March 27th, the Wednesday of Holy Week, renewable energy from strong winds and the sun provided 100% of the electricity needed. From 3am to 4am and 10am to 7pm electricity was free. It did not cost more than 3.2 céntimos for 1kw/h (the cost of running an appliance of 1,000 wats for one hour) at any time during the 24hr period. In preceding days, the cost was never more than 7.5 céntimos for short periods. On March 31st, from 11am to 7pm electricity was completely free again and the highest cost for just three hours was 3.2 céntimos per kw/h. On Monday, April 8th, following the storm ‘Nelson’ in many parts of Spain with a contribution from
In the
hydro-electric dams, electricity was free for 17 hours, and for one hour the cost was negative at minus one céntimo! In the following week it was negative again at minus 5 céntimos. This can happen when nuclear power stations are producing their steady contribution of about 20% in Spain. There is no possibility of generating less power, so they sell it at a loss over the particular very short time period. In theory, for clients on the PVPC variable hour tariff there should have been a refund, but the actual price we pay is now a combination of daily and future price estimates. People on the hourly PVPC tariff will pay less money, but for people on a strict fixed tariff the cost will remain the same. More flexible “plans” will show some saving. When electricity is really cheap there are still some fixed costs, such as the mount of power (potencía) that a person pays for every month, some tax, and IVA (VAT) now back up to 21%.
No Water in Ships
We have commented in a previous magazine that the President of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has signed an agreement with the Region of Murcia. In the event of a sustained drought, or if the Carboneras desalination plant suffered a major breakdown, desalinated water for domestic or agricultural use would be brought from Cartagena in special ships with insulated compartments. Two million euros is being spent on the infrastructure at both the Carboneras and Málaga plants to enable the water to be discharged. Just after Easter, Juanma Moreno announced that with the bad weather, reservoirs in Málaga province had received 30 hm3 (30 cubic hectometres) of rain that had increased the water capacity by 60%. Despite this, the actual amounts of water were only 15% of their capacity. Because of this extra water the ships from Cartagena are not needed at present, or in the next couple of months. In our area, with relatively no rainfall, the Cuevas reservoir is only at 8% capacity. The desalination plant Escombreras at Cartagena is operating
far below its capacity and each ship could be loaded with 40,000m3 of water. If three ships were used, the Cartagena plant could fill them all over a 24hr period on a shuttle service. Apart from this, water comes from the TajoSegura canal in two enormous pipes, collected principally in the reservoirs at Guadalajara and Cuenca in Castilla-La Mancha. This is one of the largest engineering projects in Spain that was built in 1979, and the pipeline is 292 km at its longest, with the pumps providing 650 hm3 per year. This is apportioned out for various autonomous communities including Valencia, Murcia and Andalucía. Juanma Moreno is asking that the quantity of water for Andalucía is stepped up. He claims that there is 1,000 hm3 in the two reservoirs when the minimum amount is set at 400 hm3 and some of this is badly needed for agriculturalists, particularly in the Almería and Levante regions where the water comes from the pipeline terminal at Lorca.
Solar Energy
Tabernas and Lucainena de las Torres are the home of many photovoltaic solar panel farms to produce electricity and four more will be constructed to come on line in late 2025. The Barcelona company BZN owns Glennmont Partners, a UK investment company with money coming from a university professors’
In the
pension fund in the US. When operational they will provide 230MW (1MW is 1 million watts) and this will take the total photovoltaic output up to 830MW. During the construction phase it will provide jobs for between 275 direct employees and 320 indirect ones. A fifth solar farm in Tabernas will provide 47MW. The total renewable energy will eventually save 96,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. This is equivalent to 15,800 incoming and outgoing flights from Almería to Barcelona over one year.
Spanish Stock Exchange Booming
On March 27th the ‘IBEX’ Spanish Stock Exchange closed at 11,111 points, the highest since May 5th 2017 when it reached 11,135 points. Market pundits think that with continuing good economic figures it might reach 12,000 points in the next few months and the Euribor rate from the Central European Bank is expected to come down in June from 4.5%. The true Euribor rate from the Bank of Spain was put at 3.7% but the bank has to apply the higher EU percentage. Inflation has come down to 3.2%, national debt has come down, and tourism over Easter was good apart from some last-minute cancellations because of the weather. Employment figures are still improving with a normal increase over the Easter period and hence unemployment is down. Shares in AENA, the Spanish airport authority, went up 0.58%, whilst shares in the IAG group that includes Iberia went up 3.34%. Shares in Inditex, the massive clothing company, went up sharply by 14%, and Santander shares saw a big rise along with all the Spanish banks except for Sabadell that dropped very slightly. The overall picture is far better than in many other countries with good growth estimates for Spain in 2024. In comparison, the stock exchange figures for the first quarter only went up by 4.2% in the UK, 5% in Germany, 4% in France and 7% in Italy. The US is emerging from high inflation and high bank rates, and the best rise was 3% in the S&P 500 index. The Spanish billionaire owner of Inditex, Amancio Ortega, has just taken delivery of a new
yacht that has cost 182 million euros, but he did manage to sell his old one for 76 million euros!
The Missing Sculpture
Richard Serra, the American sculptor, is famous for his enormous steel works of art and he died on Wednesday, March 27th aged 85. His father came from Mallorca and there are many of his sculptures in Spanish museums. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao has several of his creations. In Madrid, the Reina Sofia Museum paid the equivalent of 200,000 euros for a 38-tonne sculpture with four large blocks of steel that was their centre-piece when the museum opened in 1992. Part of a wall had to be demolished to get it inside and then rebuilt. It was later transferred into the custody of Jesús Macarrón who stored large works of art in a warehouse in Madrid. In 1998, owing large sums of money to the Spanish Social Security, he announced that he couldn’t keep on maintaining the warehouse and the museum took it over. What happened next is not at all clear, but in 2006 the museum discovered that the sculpture was no longer there! How it went missing and where it is has never been resolved, even after Spanish police mounted an investigation. In 2008 Richard Serra generously made them a duplicate sculpture free of charge.
Electric Car Batteries
Spain’s King Felipe VI recently visited the main Seat factory in Barcelona. The Seat President, Wayne Griffiths, showed him round and the king inspected the partly completed new electric battery assembly line. Battery cells will

come from a factory in Valencia and the total production of the complete batteries, due to start in early 2025, will be 1,400 per day. These will go straight to the production lines of the Seat, Volkswagen and Skoda vehicles, all part of the Volkswagen group. There will be jobs for 500 people and 11,000 solar panels will provide 70% of the electricity needed.
Spain’s Climate in 2023
Figures for Spain in 2023 released by the official weather organisation AEMET reveal that it was the second hottest year since temperatures were first charted in 1961. It was the second hottest because 2022 was the hottest, followed by 2020 and 2017. In mainland Spain in 2022 the average temperature was 15.4ºC, in 2023 it was 15.2ºC and in 2020 and 2017 it was 14.7ºC. The highest temperature of 2023 among AEMET’s main observatories was recorded on August
10th when the Valencia airport weather station recorded 46.8ºC, followed by Cordoba airport recording 45ºC on August 11th, Valencia 44.5ºC on August 10th, and Granada airport with 44.3ºC on August 9th. The absolute record temperature in Spain was 47.6ºC in Córdoba on August 14th, 2021. Mainland Spain closed 2023 with an average rainfall of 536.6 litres per square metre (mm), which represents 16% less than normal compared to the reference value (1991-2020). In the Balearic Islands, 456.9 mm of rain was recorded, 21% less than normal and in the Canary Islands with 183.4 mm of rainfall, it was 31% less than usual. In the three territories of Spain (mainland, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands) 2023 was considered a “very dry” year according to AEMET. With the higher temperatures and less rainfall these are clear indications that Spain was experienced a drought, that extends to 2024 so far.
So Now You Know...
Gary Powers
On May 1st, 1960, an American U-2 spy plane flying at 60,000 feet was shot down over Sverdlovsk in central Russia on the eve of a summit meeting between President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Soviet Russia’s Premier Nikita Khrushchev. This caused a cancellation of the meeting and heightened existing Cold War tensions. The pilot, CIA agent Francis Gary Powers, survived the crash and was tried, convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison by a Russian court. Two years later he was released in exchange for an imprisoned Soviet spy but faced hostility that he had been captured alive. He died in a helicopter crash in 1977.
The First US Man in Space
Alan Shepard, a navy test pilot was selected for astronaut training in 1959 and he became the first American in space on May 5th, 1961. He piloted the Mercury capsule spacecraft Freedom 7 during a 15-minute 28-second suborbital flight that reached an altitude of 116 miles (186 kms) above the earth. Shepard’s success occurred 23 days after the Russians had launched the first ever human in space, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, during an era of intense technological competition between the Russians and Americans called the Space Race. In 1971 he became the fifth and oldest man to walk on the moon as part of the Apollo program.
Charles Lindbergh
On May 20th, 1927, Charles Lindbergh, a 25-yearold aviator, took off at 7.52am from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, in the Spirit of St. Louis attempting to win a 25,000 dollar prize for the first solo non-stop flight between New York City and Paris. Thirtythree hours later, after a 3,600-mile journey, he landed at Le Bourget, Paris. He was given the nickname “Lucky Lindy”, becoming an instant worldwide hero, and he was made “Man of the Year” by Time Magazine. He had been a pilot delivering mail between St. Louis and Chicago, often at night and in bad weather, that gave him the necessary skills to attempt the long transatlantic flight.
Running a Mile
In 1945, Gunder Hagg from Sweden set the world record for a mile in 4 minutes 1.3 seconds. The general opinion between athletes was that a time of under 4 minutes was impossible, although many people tried. On May 6th, 1954, Roger Bannister ,who was a 25 year old medical student, broke this record in a time of 3 minutes 59.4 seconds at the Iffley Road Sports Ground in Oxford. He had previously set a British record in the 1,500m race at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 when he was fourth. He graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School in 1954, obtained a degree from Oxford University in 1963, and was knighted in 1975.
Victoria Day in Canada
Queen Victoria was born on May 24th, 1819, and in Canada there is a holiday on the penultimate Monday in May, so this year May 20th, when they celebrate “Victoria Day”. It first became a holiday in 1845 and then became a national holiday in 1901. It has developed to being a remembrance of Queen Elizabeth’s II birthday as well. In 1841 the parliaments of Upper and Lower Canada were replaced by a single legislative assembly for the Province of Canada and a public holiday was seen as a way to unite English and French Canadians. Also, honouring the British monarch was seen as a way of distinguishing Canadians from Americans.
No Socks Day
Thomas and Ruth Roy of Lebanon, Pennsylvania have come up with some wacky holidays such as “National no housework” day on April 7th. Their “No socks day” is on May 8th and is claimed to be celebrated worldwide. People are encouraged to relax, take their socks off, feel the cool floor, fresh and soft blades of grass, coarse sand and tranquil water at a beach. In the eighth century B.C., the ancient Greeks wore socks made from matted animal hair that must have been very uncomfortable. The Romans wrapped their feet with leather or woven fabrics, and around 200 A.D. they started sewing them together.
Water in Spain
With the restrictions on using potable water in our province still to be announced officially, there are some very interesting statistics being published. Almost half of the Spanish population, some 22 million, are stated to be in “water stressed areas” that will go up with severe droughts or if global warming increases.
In general terms nationally, 80% of water from any source is used for agriculture, 15% for domestic use and 5% for industry. In our province there are no industries that use a substantial amount of water, but in tourist areas domestic consumption goes up because of the number of hotels.
Desalination plants are seen as key factors and at the moment there are 765 plants in operation throughout Spain, providing the fourth largest capacity worldwide. They produce 1,800 hm3 per year and 1 hm3 is 1 million m3. Despite this, it is only 6% of the demand for water that is put at 32,000 hm3. Nationally, 20% of treated water is used for agriculture but in the Mediterranean area it can be 70%, and agriculture is by far the major source of income in our province. A feature of desalination plants is that they can produce water “on demand” of three categories. These are potable domestic water the most highly treated, agricultural water treated to a lesser degree, and water for industry with a basic treatment.
Many plants date from the 1960s-1980s when production costs were high. The cost of producing 1m3 of potable water was then between 3 and 4 euros, but with modernisation and new plants the cost has fallen to 50-80 céntimos. Renewable energy is being used to reduce electricity costs, and ‘Acuamed’ who own the Águilas and Torrevieja plants have installed photo-voltaic panels at both of them, with EU funding. They also own the Carboneras plant with similar plans to instal solar panels.
This plant was built in 2003 at a cost of 138 million euros and at present the capacity is 120,000 m3 per day. It provides potable water to 23
municipalities including all the ones in our area. Last year tenders were invited for a 40-million euros project to gradually replace all the old desalination equipment and upgrade it to double the output. The Cuevas de Almanzora desalination plant, wrecked by flooding in 2012 after it had only been in operation for one year is being put back in action, and the work has been upgraded to “urgent”. When back in service it can provide 20m hm3 per year with 5 hm3 for domestic use. Agriculturalists are planning to pay for their own desalination plant nearby, providing them with 30 hm3 at a cost of 60 million euros.
desalination lant
The distribution here from Carboneras is through Galasa (Gestión de Aguas del Levante Almeriense, S.A.). This company is 53% owned by the ‘diputación’ (Almería county council) and 47% by 23 municipalities, and there have been many problems. It has been bailed out twice and Endesa cut off the electricity to their Vera headquarters the last time, for unpaid bills. The PSOE political party want the diputación to ask the Junta de Andalucía to pay for vital work to replace the old leaking pipework. The main complaint is that Galasa is “reactive” in repairing leaks (often slowly), but not “proactive” in preventing them. The average of 14 hm3 per year obtained from Carboneras since 2014 is 50% lost through leaks, currently amounting to a direct annual cost of 3 million euros. In December 2022 ‘Acuamed’ stated that they were starting legal proceedings because Galasa owed them 57 million euros.
Still Seismic Activity in La Palma
Many people will remember the disastrous volcanic eruption in La Palma that didn’t stop for several months until Christmas 2021. It was unique in Spain because volcanologists and geologists who rushed to the scene could see an eruption in real time, on the ground, from the air, and at sea. Some of them manned the main centre where they tried to predict what would happen next and along with the police ordered the evacuation of many residents.
Some of these volcanologists are still there, studying the current situation and forming theories as to why the eruption happened, and have made up to 400 investigations. Their conclusion is that there are two main fault lines that have been given the names Tazacorte and Mallet. The fault lines move at about 3mm a year which is three times as fast as the Carboneras fault, one of the fastest in mainland Spain, which is caused by the Trans-Alboran shear zone where two tectonic plates grind together. The Tazacorte fault line goes in a northwest, southeast direction that was the line of the many cones where lava flowed up and out. It is 8.5km from the coast and 20km from the other side of the island. In October 2021, the fault line Mallet changed the direction which was 6km from the crater and 16km from the other side of the volcano, creating further hypocentres and new cones. The two fault lines cross each other and are still moving today.
It is considered likely that these two faults extend into the sea, but this cannot be proved at present. The charting of these two fault lines explains why some houses were completely demolished and some were still standing. Near these faults many residents have reported that there were continual cracks in walls that started many years ago, that scientists initially discounted thinking they were caused by normal landslip as they were a long way from lava flow and tremors detected before the eruption. Now, the damaged buildings have been charted as being over the fault lines, and sixty very accurate crack detectors have been
installed in buildings. One future plan is to chart any movement by sophisticated GPS.
Starting in the 1980s, many properties were built on reinforced concrete slabs that can absorb the movement without breaking. Other houses, garages, patios, ramps, a bus and petrol station have no such footings and continue to move. The siting of a planned visitor and interpretation centre has consequently been moved, as it was determined it was over one of the recently discovered fault lines.
The investigations at La Palma are similar to ones carried out at Mount Etna. An Italian volcanologist has helped chart fault lines there, and the area around them has been designated as being micro zones. Some of these are where new buildings cannot be allowed as they will not be safe. This can be repeated on La Palma with similar designations.
The La Palma area is considered to have been created by a rapid growth, although this probably happened over two million years with a height of 5,000m. 3,000m are under the sea and 2,400m above the land. Two million years is considered to be quick in geological time, and it causes landslides that open up large, deep fissures. The Tazacorte fault was measured between five days in September 2021 as being 20km deep, but they didn’t realise the significance. Volcanologists consider that the fault lines almost certainly contributed to the eruption in 1949. Hopefully, the next eruption may be easier to predict.
A Boom in Live Concerts
Formerly, it was only the superstars of popular music who could fill a large stadium in Spain to their full capacity, such as The Rolling Stones, Michael Jackson, U2, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen. Julio Iglesias and Alejandro Sanz were the only Spaniards, but now, this is changing dramatically.
Young people are flocking to live concerts and many of them are quickly sold out. Football stadiums are popular and the Columbian singer Karol G announced last December that she was coming to the Real Madrid stadium in July for one night only. Aged 33, she is considered to be the queen of urban pop, has won various Grammies and been made a Billboard “Woman of the year”. Tickets are 118-473 euros for seats on the stands and 172-224 euros in front of the stage on the pitch. Her concert almost immediately sold out, so another one was announced for the following night, then a third one and then a fourth one. If a concert takes place mid-week in a football stadium it may well be that there are following nights when nothing else is happening. If a huge stage has been erected with all the lights and speakers, keeping it there for another night is no problem.
Aitana is a popular young Spanish singer and songwriter aged 25 coming to the same stadium in Madrid in December and tickets sold out in three days. Lola Indigo, age 32, is a Spanish singer and dancer and her concert in March 2025 at the Madrid stadium had sold 53,000 seats in midApril, but ticket prices start at only 30 euros. Lola states that she expects she will not make any profit from her concert and ticket sales will go towards the cost of the stage, production and dancers.
Concert organisers state that one explanation is “If you are in your early 20s and have not been able to attend a live concert for two years, you want to attend one now as you have missed out”. Many young people have streamed music from
popular artists, or heard them on the radio. In many cases there are travel costs and a night’s stay as well.
At the end of 2023, Ticketmaster stated that the purchase of tickets by young people in Spain aged 18-24 grew last year by 48% compared to 2022. A spokesperson commented, “Live concerts are social events. People don’t come just to be enraptured by an artist; they feel that their generation has to be there, and then they leave a record of it on social networks.”
Not all live concerts are to see young Spanish performers or with a predominantly young audience. Metallica have two concerts at a large venue in Madrid in July. Tickets went on sale last November but there are still plenty of seats to choose from.
AC/DC are an exception probably appealing to more mature fans nowadays although they used to have a large following by young people, but they have not gone on tour since 2016. When their “Power Up” album came out in 2020 there was no tour because of the pandemic. From May, they are having 24 concerts in 11 European countries with two nights in Seville, the only venue in Spain, at the large La Cartuja football stadium with 57,800 seats plus a large standing area. Wednesday, May 29th sold out within three hours and a second concert was then announced on Saturday, June 1st. Tickets are 109 euros standing, up to 369 euros.

Cabbage Crusaders
by Chrissie CremoreThere was no cabbage on the menu when The Indalo Players gathered for their after show luncheon and celebrated the triumphant success of Vernon Coleman’s classic comedy Mrs Caldicot’s Cabbage War. Sadly, due to unforeseen circumstances, their planned theatre dates in Arboleas had to be cancelled. However, Director Janet Franklin quickly decided to add a matinee performance following the two evening shows in Los Gallardos.
Audience response and comments have been incredible and it is because of YOU that the group managed to raise a whopping 3811 euros which completely surpassed their expectations. The Indalo Committee will donate proceeds to local charities. Also, the nightly PAWS-PATAS raffles raised 615 euros, so more applause to those who attended.
There is no show without dedication, hard work and loyalty towards each other and this extends to the unsung heroes in the background who build the set and deal with props, lights and sound, etc.
There are three more Mrs Caldicot books and Janet will be liaising with the author to find out if The Cabbage Crusaders are able to adapt for the stage. Vernon’s stories always have a strong, social and poignant message entwined with humour and hope.
For more information about the drama group visit their website: www.indaloplayers.es

Los Bandidos was set up in June 2018 with a small group running the 5k Mojácar Paseo, and now has road cycling, sea swimming and triathlon groups. All ages, nationalities and speeds are welcome, whether permanent residents or holidaymakers. Los Bandidos are keen to integrate and support the local community. We are currently collecting non-perishable food and toiletries for the Red Cross Food Bank.
We are very sociable and most sessions are followed by a coffee, cake or breakfast, depending on the time of day. Follow us on Facebook to keep up-to-date with our latest activities (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ 490933409244200). We look forward to seeing you soon.
Presentation of Mojácar’s Tourist Campaign and the Awarding of the Gold Indalo 2024
Mojácar Council officially presented its Tourism 2024 promotion campaign on April 25th at the Cosentino City Madrid facilities, attended by national and international tourism companies, the media, public administrations and various public figures.
At the same event the 2024 “City of Mojácar” Gold Indalo was awarded to the Almería journalist Isabel Jiménez, as well as “City of Mojácar” special mentions to the singer and
composer Vanesa Martin in the Art and Culture category; to the University of Granada Memolab UGR biocultural archaeology laboratory in the History and Heritage category and finally, to the El Puntazo tourist complex in the Local Business and Tradition category.
This new Mojácar tourism campaign is responsible for promoting the locality in the next tourism season. Under the slogan: “Your Best Moment is to Live It”, Mojácar wants to give a nod to the increasingly widespread trend of capturing images and moments for social media instead of living and enjoying all the excellence that, in this case Mojácar offers to the visitor: A call to enjoy the landscapes, experiences, to fully enjoy free time, the cuisine, its beaches, its walks, its history and leisure.
The Mojácar 2024 slogan, “Your Best Moment is to Live It”, has already been presented at the last International Tourism Fair, achieving great acceptance for its originality despite only offering a small sample of what the full campaign will be: a video which shows, among other surprises, impressive views, corners and enclaves of Mojácar. It will also have posters and extensive promotional material.
The presentation event, which took place in the incomparable setting of Cosentino City Madrid, especially decorated for such an important occasion, consisted of three parts starting with the welcome by the mayor, Francisco García, to all attendees, and the presentation of the campaign with the viewing of the promotional video. Following this, the “City of Mojácar” special mentions and the Gold Indalo 2024 were awarded. Finally, a cocktail was offered and contact made with professionals to exchange opinions about the campaign, networking with companies and guests to complete the programme organised for the presentation.

Jokes of the Month
The Office Machine
Philip was a junior office assistant at a large company. Keen to make a good impression on his boss, he often stayed late working. One evening, he was just about to go home when he saw his boss standing in front of the shredder holding a document. “Ah, Philip, I’m glad to see you’re still here working hard. I was wondering if you could help me? You see, my secretary has already gone home, and I haven’t got a clue as to how this thing works.” “Of course, it’s no problem”, said Philip, happy to be asked to do such an easy task. He took the document, inserted it into the machine, and pressed start. “That’s excellent”, said the boss as the document vanished into the shredder. “Now, I just need two copies.”
Getting Married
Tom, a very successful jeweller, was 65 and married Candy, 44 years younger than he was who he met in one of his shops. After they came back from their honeymoon, they threw a party for all of their friends. One of Tom’s friends asked him, “Hey man, I know you got loads of money and all that, but how did you land a woman so good looking and so young?” Tom replied, “Well, to be honest I lied about my age and health.” His friend said, “Age? Please, you can barely pass off as being a 60-yearold and you don’t look fit, you’re flabby and obviously don’t exercise regularly.” Tom replied, “No, I told her I was 85 and had an advanced heart condition which could kill me at any moment.”
Afternoon Off
"I thought, Miss Smith, that you wanted yesterday afternoon off because you were seeing your dentist?"
"That's right, Sir."
"So how come I saw you coming out of the movie theatre with a friend?"
"That was my dentist."
The Missing Gravy Ladle
John invited his mother over for dinner one evening. During the meal, she couldn’t help but notice how attractive his roommate Judy was. She had been suspicious of a relationship between her son and his roommate for quite some time, but this only made her more curious. She watched the two of them interact over the course of the evening and began to wonder whether there was more between John and Judy than met the eye. Realising only too well what his mother was thinking, John said, “I can see your wheels turning Mom and I know what you’re thinking. Rest assured Judy and I are strictly roommates.”
A few days later, Judy said to John, “You know the beautiful silver gravy ladle? Well, ever since your mother came to dinner I can’t seem to find it. You don’t think she would have taken it, do you?”
“I doubt it, but I’ll write her a letter just to be sure,” replied John. John then sat down and wrote his mother the following letter:
“Dear Mom,
While I’m not saying you ‘did’ take a gravy ladle from my house, and I’m not saying you ‘didn’t’ take a gravy ladle, the fact remains that ever since you were here for dinner one has been missing. Love, Your son.”
Several days later, John received a reply from his mother which read:
“Dear John,
While I am not saying you ‘do’ sleep with Judy, and I’m not saying you ‘don’t’ sleep with her, the fact remains that she would have found the gravy ladle by now if she were sleeping in her own bed. Love, Mom.”
Not My Son
I was gutted this afternoon when my wife told me my 6 year old son wasn’t actually mine. She went on to say I need to pay more attention at the school pick up.
Whales and Jonah
A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales. The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though a whale is a very large mammal, its throat is very small. The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale. The teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human, it was impossible.
The little girl said, “When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah.”
The teacher asked, “What if Jonah went to hell?”
The little girl replied, “Then you ask him!”
The Condoms
A man and his 13-year-old son are in the pharmacy when his son sees the condom display. “Dad”, the son says, “What are those for? “Well, those are for when a man and woman want to have safe intercourse”. “Oh”, the son says, “Why do they have a threepack?” “That’s for a college junior; one for Friday, one for Saturday and one for Sunday morning”. “And why do they have a 6-pack?” “That’s for college seniors, two for Friday, two for Saturday and two for Sunday.” “And why do they have a 12-pack?” “Well, that’s for married men...one for January, one for February...”
The Bears
A woman spots a man in a bar, he’s tall, tanned, strikingly handsome, and seems different from most other guys she meets. After a couple of drinks, she agrees to go back to his house. They head straight to the bedroom where she can’t help but notice three shelves full of teddy bears. On the bottom are small teddy bears, on the middle shelf are medium-sized teddy bears, and on the top are large teddy bears, all lined up beside each other. She decides that he’s gentle and sweet, and isn’t afraid to show it. Her heart melts and she want to give him the best night of his life. In the morning as she’s getting dressed, she smiles at him and asks, “How was that?” He nods and replies, “Hmmm, not too bad at all. Help yourself to a prize on the second shelf!”
Marriage
Then there was a man who said, “I never knew what real happiness was until I got married; and then it was too late.”
The Lesson
Dr. Parker, the male biology teacher at a posh suburban girls’ college, said during class, “Miss Smith, would you please name the organ of the human body, which under the appropriate conditions, expands to six times its normal size, and define the conditions.” Miss Smith gasped, blushed deeply, then said freezingly, “Dr. Parker, I do not think that is a proper question to ask me, you should be asking a boy. And I assure you my parents will hear of this.” With that she sat down, very red-faced. Unperturbed, Dr. Parker called on Miss Johnson and asked the same question. Miss Johnson, with composure, replied, “The pupil of the eye, in dim light.” “Correct,” said Dr. Parker. “And now, Miss Smith, I have three things to say to you. One, you have not done your homework, two, you have a dirty mind and three, you will be faced with a dreadful disappointment one day.”
