The Run-Up to Summer
People paying into the Spanish Social Security because they are being employed, or starting new businesses, is on the rise again. Some existing businesses have changed location and some new ones including bars and restaurants are opening up. We wish these entrepreneurs every success, and look forward to helping them through advertising.
Civil engineering projects underway include the spanning of the Las Buganvillas to Vera dual carriageway by the enormous beams to carry the ‘AVE’ (High speed train). We comment on this is our ‘In the News’ section as it has been a major engineering and logistical undertaking. The Vera station is the only one between Lorca and Almería city and work continuous on other sections. In Mojácar, the recently opened bus station is now shut as work is underway to build the roundabout for the bus station and the new medical centre that should obviously have been included in the original plans. Work continues on the beach by-pass that should be operational before summer next year. Major work on the road beside the promenade in the centre of Garrucha has now been completed and nearby residents and businesses will have breathed a sigh of relief, but work on the main street in Turre is not yet complete.
Restrictions to save water are still in place in various municipalities in our province, but in the Costa del Sol the daily allowance has been increased and town halls can water gardens where special plants may die.
Dealing with illegal immigrants including those who arrive on boats continues to be a problem and we explain how Spain is tackling the problem in an article. In our ‘In the News’ section we comment on proposals in the EU to deal with it.
The ‘Blue Flag’ awards for beaches and recreational marinas have now been published and Almería province has 35 awards for the 200km of beaches in 13 municipalities, with two additional ones this year for marinas. Last year Mojácar went down
from six to four and it is the same this year except one of them is actually two beaches side by side as the Venta del Bancal and Ventanicas beaches share the same water sampling point. We comment on the awards this year in our ‘In the News’ section.
Almería UD football team, relegated back to the second division, have had a disastrous season described as being “the worst season in history” and continuous changes in their manager has not helped. We enlarge on this and the anticipated loss of income next year for businesses in Almería city in our ‘In the News’ section.
Many beach bars have now put out their beach beds to add to their attractions, and various concerts or other activities are in the open air. In our ‘What’s On’ section we list ones that may be of interest.
From June 6th-9th elections take place for Euro MPs and Spain has 61 up for grabs out of the total of 720. People with Spanish nationality can vote on June 9th. The recent election for MPs in Catalonia has had extremely different results to normal and we explain this in our ‘In the News’ section.
There are no major Fiesta dates in June or July when many places are shut, but night-time on June 23rd is the vigil of ‘San Juan’ (John the Baptist) who was supposedly born on June 24th. Bonfires are lit on beaches, often with music and fireworks. This year the Mojácar ‘Moors and Christians’ events are from Friday, June 14th- Sunday, June16th.

UK Elections
UK General Elections will take place on July 4th and candidates have to be announced by June 7th. For overseas voters who are eligible to vote this can be done online at gov.uk. Full information can be found at https://www.gov.uk/voting-whilstabroad and https://www.register-to-vote. The final document you need to upload includes a scan of your signature. A voting pack will be sent by post no earlier than 16 days before the election and it has to be posted back and received by 10pm on July 4th. We have commented before that at various establishments letters and packages can be handed in, with a fee, to be flown to the UK where they enter the Royal Mail system. Advice is to allow 7 working days from despatch to receipt.
Visible ‘AVE’ Progress
Motorists using the Las Buganvillas to Vera dual carriageway on Monday, May 13th found that they had to take a diversion on both sides. This was because two enormous cranes that can each lift 300 tonnes were positioning four extremely large beams over the dual carriageway that are part of the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) link from Pulpí to Vera. These beams are 42.4m long and each of them weigh 191 tonnes. They form part of the viaduct that has a total length of 172m. Each of the four beams with a total span 28m wide is for one of four tracks. Two of them are the main AVE line and the other two are for an incoming and outgoing track at the Vera station that is very close to the Las Buganvillas to Vera side of the dual carriageway. Being able to span the dual carriageway has meant that there was no need for a supporting pillar in the central reservation. The 134 piles for all the pillars have used 14,000m3 of concrete supplied by 1,600 concrete lorries. Altogether there are 20 beams, four for each of the five sections of the viaduct. From the Vera station the line will join up with the false tunnel that was built some years ago at the end of the initial construction at this location. There is another viaduct over the AP-7 Cartagena to Vera toll road. Building the underground section at the Lorca station is the major work that has only just started. The total distance from the Murcia station to Almería station is 200kms, and
108kms is in our province. In theory, but cynics and many engineers say that this is impossible, the finish date when trains will be running is 2026.
The EU And Migration
In an article we explain how Spain deals with would be immigrants. 15 EU states are calling on the EU Commission to come up with alternative ways of dealing with them. These are Denmark, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania and Finland. They suggest that there could be far more systems such as the one in Tunisia where the EU fund the authorities to stop migrants from leaving. Another controversial method has been agreed in Italy where it is intended to send an initial 3,000 migrants to Albania. The difference from the Rwanda proposal is that Albania is considered a “safe” country and staff from Italy would go there permanently to process the immigrants “in accordance with European legislation”. Successful asylum seekers would stay there. The EU states who have joined together consider that there should be a list of safe countries outside the EU and agreements signed with them, similar to Albania. The EU have already come up with a quota system for EU states where immigration is a problem, designed to share them out. If a member state will not accept their quota of immigrants, they have to pay 20,000 euros per person to fund the procedure in other member states. The ‘Frontex’ EU border agency state that in 2023, a total of 385,000 irregular migrants arrived in the EU. What will come of these proposals may well be as a result of the elections for the EU Parliament from June 6th-9th.
The Elections in Catalonia
Residents of Catalonia went to the polls on May 12th to elect MPs, and the result has astounded everyone. Since the 1990s, after every election, pro-independence parties together with parties that are prepared to support them, have obtained a majority. This time, the PSC Socialist party, the Catalonia branch of the PSOE party, rocketed ahead with 28% of the vote, 11 more MPs than last time with a total of 42. The Junts independent party,
In the News
with another three MPs more than last time, only had 35 and many of the smaller pro-independence parties lost out. The ERC party that may hold the balance of power went down from 33 to 20 MPs. To govern there has to be a majority of 68 so the two parties with the most seats will each try to form a coalition. The general opinion seems to be that independence is not now a major issue and voters would rather have a stable government to address the existing problems. Carles Puigdemont from the Junts party was the President of Catalonia in 2017 when there was an illegal independence referendum and declaration of independence. As a result, he and many other MPs fled Spain to avoid arrest and prosecution. He would dearly like to form a government himself, but this may not be possible. He has stated that if he does not become the President, he will leave politics. Since 2017 he has been in Brussels where he became a Euro MP but his wife and two teenage daughters stayed in Spain. Whilst he has been there his father and his mother have died and he faced arrest if he came back to Spain. He is hoping that the proposed amnesty for people involved in the illegal vote and declaration in 2017 will allow him to come back to Spain without being arrested and appearing in court, but this is not totally guaranteed. Pedro Sánchez is hoping that the amnesty bill will be passed in Parliament on May 30th, on the second try as the upper house (Senate) voted against it. It has been suggested however that courts will deal with claims for amnesty on a case-by-case basis. Carles Puigdemont is being investigated for organising a large rally that turned nasty, police were injured, and a French tourist had a heart attack and died. The offence is terrorism, not covered by the amnesty, and at the end of May he had to answer questions from the court by video conference.
Another Pedestrian Death
On May 17th in Macael, on the Avenida Paco Cosentino road in the centre of the town, an eightyear-old boy was killed on a Zebra crossing in the middle of the afternoon. He was with other young people and a motorbike ran into him. Tragically, he died in the ambulance on the way to the HuércalOvera hospital where his death was confirmed.
The motorbike driver, aged 18, ran away from the scene of the accident but police located him in the early hours of the next morning in Olula del Rio, when he tried to run off a second time. Apparently, according to the police, he had been doing “wheelies” in a park earlier in the afternoon and the police had been called. Witnesses at the scene of the accident told police that he was overtaking stationary cars at the pedestrian crossing when he collided with the small boy. A police spokesperson stated that he did not have a driving licence or any insurance. After being arrested he was charged with reckless homicide, leaving the scene of an accident, and the other motoring offences. It is alleged that the young man, originating from Maghreb, was known to the police and had recently been released from the Young Person’s home at Oria. Members of the public observed a one-minute silence in front of the town hall in solidarity for the family of the victim. Social media reported that the boy who was killed was the son of the PSOE spokesperson at Purchena town hall.
Desalination Plant
Water for Irrigation
Desalination plants can produce potable water as well as water that is not processed to the same degree for irrigation by agriculturalists. If there is less water needed for domestic use, which is the reason for the water rationing, there is more water available for irrigation. José María Martín, the Government’s Sub-delegate in Almeria, has announced plans to deal with the continuing drought in our province. The Carboneras desalination plant will provide 24 cubic hectometres
In the
(hm3), 15 hm3 will come from the large Campo de Dalias plant in Almería province near El Ejido, 5 hm3 from a plant in Torrevieja, and 6 hm3 from the very large plant at Águilas that supplies Murcia with desalinated water and also irrigation water to the Pulpí area. The recommissioning of the Cuevas de Almanzora plant, wrecked by the 2012 floods, is being treated as urgent, and this will supply a further 5 hm3 for irrigation when back in action. Last month we mentioned that the company who now run the Carboneras plant for the next two years are undertaking improvements and modernisation to increase the output, and the same thing is happening at the Dalias plant. The ‘Guadalquivir Commission’, responsible for the water that comes in the enormous Tajo Segura pipeline, are expected to authorise more water being sent to Almería province which arrives at the Lorca terminal. Agriculture is the major motor of the economy in our province and a large part of total exports from Andalucía.
Unwelcome Media Attention
Patricia Ramiréz is the mother of Gabriel who was murdered in 2018 by his father’s ex-partner Ana Quezada when he was eight years old. The tragedy gripped Almería and Spain when it was revealed that he was murdered very quickly after he was reported missing and the woman took part in many of the searches and press interviews and tried to mislead police by stating she had found his teeshirt in a countryside location that had previously been comprehensively searched. This made her a suspect and when she was arrested his body was in the boot of her car. She was given one of the “permanently revisable” prison terms of 30 years, and after this time can only apply to be released every two years. She is currently in prison in Ávila. Patricia held a meeting in front of the Diputacíon (County Council) building on the morning of May 11th when 700 people took part, complaining that media outlets were trying to profit from the tragedy, although she had personally refused every offer of taking part in a documentary. She asked for “urgent help from the good people to prevent them from profiting from the death of her child” and a ban on any unauthorised media
programmes that only cause further suffering to survivors. Patricia is starting legal action as she claims that Ana Quezada had taken part in a video call in prison for a documentary, for which she was paid, and prison guards provided her with a mobile phone. She has reported this to the Ministry of the Interior and the Director General of Prisons who have promised an investigation and agree that filming should never have been made by a convicted prisoner. Patricia is also hoping that she can address MPs in the Spanish Parliament and the Senate to ask for legislation to be passed to safeguard all families who have experienced tragedy from unwanted intrusion. The demonstration finished up at the “Gabriel’s whale” monument on the promenade which is a tribute to Gabriel who was fascinated by whales. On May 16th the lawyer for Ana Quezada stated that “for her own safety” she had been put in another part of the prison in isolation. He claimed that “as far as he knew” there was no documentary under way with her having a major contribution and any conversations, assuming they took place, did not relate to Gabriel.
Blue Flag Beaches
Last month we commented on an environmental inspection of beaches in our province where bathing takes place, and they all passed. On May 1st, the European Foundation for Environmental Education (EFF), founded in 1987, announced their “blue flag” awards. These are awarded for compliance with four categories, Environmental and Education (information for the public), Water quality, Environmental Management (such as beach cleaning) and Safety and Services (such as lifeguards, facilities for the disabled and transport). This year Almería province has 35 awards from the 200km of beaches in 13 municipalities with two additional ones this year. The only beach submitted for the award that was denied a blue flag is the Pozo de Esparto at Cuevas de Almanzora. Roquetas de Mar has seven, Carboneras, Mojácar and Pulpí have four, and Vera one. Flags are awarded at recreational marinas and included in the total are ports at Roquetas de Mar, and new ones at San José and Adra. The total in Andalucía is 156, eight more than last year and
In the News
only three less than the 159 in Valencia. The “Q” (Qualitur) awards for beaches with their own flags are awarded in Spain, with slightly less rigid criteria.
New Castle and Museums Entrance Fees
The Almería Alcazaba castle was visited by 230,500 people in 2023 making it the fourth most visited place in Andalucía. At present there is no charge for EU residents and 1.5 euros for other people. The Junta de Andalucía have published draft proposals that the entrance fee will be put up and also at the archaeological sites at Los Millares, Villaricos, Puerta de Almería, the castle at Vélez Blanco, the Almería Museum and the Andalusian Centre of Photography (CAF). The proposed new entrance fee will be 5 euros at the castle and the Almería Museum (free at present) and 3 euros at other unspecified places, but once a week admission will be free to people under the age of 18, over 65, the unemployed and disabled persons. It will also be free on particular dates such as Día de Andalucía and International Tourism Day. If the same number of visitors come to the Almería castle this will raise 1.3 million euros to be spent on the upkeep and mounting exhibitions. 5 euros is less than the existing 8 euros fee at the Madinat Al Zahra in Cordoba, the Dolmens of Antequera and the Málaga Museum. There is a 3 euros fee charged at present at a variety of places.
Proton Therapy
Amancio Ortega is the Spanish billionaire who owns the ‘Inditex’ fashion chain and he is considered to be the fourth richest man in the world. He has provided large sums of money for modernising or providing new machines for combatting cancer via the Amancio Ortega Foundation that is administered by his daughter. Up to now, the new equipment has been installed in Andalucía where he donated 40 million euros in 2016, and provided 17 million euros to hospitals in Galicia. He recently announced that he is providing 19.8 million euros for the installation of a Proton therapy machine in Galicia that will be used by the Spanish Health Service in Galicia and nearby autonomous communities, planned to be operational in 2025. He also intends to donate 320 million euros for the installation of 290 new
machines in all of the autonomous communities in Spain for various types of cancer detection and treatment including mammograms. There are two Proton machines in Spain already, but both of them belong to private hospitals. Proton therapy provides very specific targeted protons that cause minimum damage to surrounding tissue, particularly useful for treating cancer in children. This treatment hit the headlines in 2014, when the parents of a small five-year-old boy, Ashya King, smuggled him out of Southampton hospital to go to the Czech Republic for proton treatment to a brain tumour. The parents were arrested in Málaga where they were selling a property to provide funds, but they were then allowed to proceed to Prague where the treatment took place over 30 sessions that was successful. The following year Ashya was announced to be cancer free.
No Parking No Café
Politicians from the PSOE political party and the Torrecárdenas hospital are urging the Junta de Andalucía to speed up the building of a badly needed new car park and the re-opening of the cafeteria. Since the pandemic, for over 600 days, the café has been shut and there are only items that can be purchased from vending machines. Before it closed it was open from early in the morning until 11pm and it provided food and drink not just for patients and visitors but also for hospital staff. Over a year ago it was announced that there would be a new multi-storey car park built as after about 10am in the morning it is impossible to find a parking place. The plans for the six-storey car park include a new cafeteria on the top floor but the authorities want the existing one to be put back into service. José Luis SánchezTeruel, from the PSOE, complains that this is the only hospital in our province that does not have a café and restaurant. He points out that the new car park is to have spaces for 2,000 cars, and as new departments open the situation is getting worse and the number of staff has risen to over 4,000. It was then announced that tenders to run the existing café had to arrive by June 14th with a contract that would be signed for three years that can be extended to five years. It was intended that
In the News
it would be back in action by September / October. As regards the car park, it was announced that the construction contract would be signed “imminently” with a possible start date this summer. The new outpatients building is underway with a completion date of November this year. The Andalucía Health service have now announced that the sevenstorey building with 119 consultancy / diagnostic rooms is being expanded to 142 and will involve an additional floor. The total cost is now 22.7 million euros and the finish date will be six months later. This new price also includes some improvements in energy efficiency. The work is being financed mostly from the “Next Generation” money.
Dreambeach Press Release
“The Tenth Anniversary of Dreambeach continues to take shape and add new shows that are consolidating this special celebration as a festival of the summer. If there is an artist from Almeria who could not miss this anniversary, it is RVFV, a benchmark in the urban scene. For this reason, on this anniversary, Rafael Ruiz Amador will present RVFV Special Urban Performance, a special show designed to celebrate with Dreambeach its first ten years of life. Continuing the commitment to exclusive performances, Dreambeach has managed to unite two international stars in a joint B2B show prepared for the festival’s anniversary. This irresistible combo, where the creator of Hot Creations, the British Jamie Jones, will join forces with the techno of the Neapolitan Joseph Capriati. A performance that already defines one of the closing sets of this new edition of the festival. Techno is a common denominator in the style of
Reinier Zonneveld, who will perform live. A name that has grown exponentially in recent years. Director of the Filth on Acid label since 2017, where he has regularly collaborated with artists such as Carl Cox, remixed artists such as Moby or taken his productions to Hollywood. The trumpet is a regular complement to Timmy Trumpet’s sessions. The author of an anthem like Freaks explores a musical universe between EDM and hardstyle, with a showman component where his favourite instrument is a constant in each of his live shows. The Australian is No. 6 on the Top Dj Mag 2023. Matt Cantor and Aston Harvey formed Freestylers in the 1990s. One of the key formations in the development of the breakbeat sound. The Brits will make their debut at Dreambeach on their 10th Anniversary. Anthony Godfather, creator of the Latintech label, completes this new advance with mostly international names, which increasingly outlines the artistic proposal in its 2024 edition. The festival takes place from August 1st-4th with simultaneous programming on three major stages: EDM/Mainstream/ Hardstyle, Techno, Breakbeat and Drum & Bass.”
Assisted Dying
Spain has had a procedure in place since June 2021 where people can make a request to end their life if they are experiencing “a serious or incurable disease or a serious or chronic condition”. End of life medication can be self-administered (assisted suicide) or by a doctor at a hospital or at home (euthanasia). A person has to make two applications 15 days apart through their doctor, and if it is approved it is then considered by a panel of medical experts, including two specialising in the illness that the applicant has. They have to come to a decision within 19 days with an appeal procedure if permission is denied. In approved cases, end-oflife treatment should take place within a further 15 days. In practice, there are complaints that the time period is much longer than intended and Andalucía was slow in introducing the law. Figures from Andalucía show that there were 81 applications in 2022 and 56 in 2023, with five in Almería province. 16 of the 56 requests did not proceed to a final decision as two people changed
In the News
their minds, eight died during the application, four were offered and accepted alternative treatment, and two applications were not approved by their doctor as meeting the criteria. Of the remaining 40 where the applications were fully considered, it was granted and their life was ended in 24 cases. One person asked to postpone their end-of-life procedure, six died before their case was ruled on, and it was denied in nine cases, but in two of these an appeal was subsequently successful. Doctors can opt out of the scheme on the grounds of conscience or religion, and in 2023 in Andalucía this applied to 1,340 out of 126,000. Three people who received end of life procedures agreed to organ donation that saved the lives of 12 people in urgent need of a transplant, with six kidney transplants, one liver and one pancreas transplant and two lung transplants. In all of Spain up to the end of 2023 a total of 150 applications were approved and their lives were ended. There were two in 2022 and three in 2023 in our province.
A Boat People Organiser
A man has appeared in court in Almería charged with organising a journey for would-be immigrants trying to come from Algeria to the Spanish coast. It is alleged that 17 adults and 5 children had each paid 5,000-7,000 euros, and they left in a semi-rigid boat that had an outboard motor that had not been serviced. The man in court, also in the boat, had topped the outboard motor up with petrol on the journey but after a few hours it ran out. Adverse weather conditions meant that the boat soon started to fill up with water. The occupants were adrift for six hours before they were rescued at 2am last November 23rd. Other people who helped with the organisation of the journey in Algeria could not be traced and brought before the court. The ‘fiscalía’ (Spanish Crown Prosecution Service) are asking for a prison term of 7 years.
The Beautiful Villages Publication
The Michelin company has published a travel guide showing the 116 villages in Spain that have been awarded the “Most Beautiful Villages in Spain” category. In our province this applies to Mojácar, Lucainena de las Torres, and Níjar. It gives
seven routes between the villages and thematic information to be found at many of them. There are QR codes that link to the website of the ‘Association of Most Beautiful Villages in Spain’ and the map is available to be purchased from their website.
An Agreement Regarding Gibraltar
On May 16th in Brussels, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jose Manual Albares, had a meeting with David Cameron and the European Vice-President for Brexit, Maro Sefcovic. The aim, following a similar meeting in April, was to iron out the last details of an agreement for Gibraltar. The meeting has been hailed as finally settling “The prosperity, legal certainty and confidence” between Spain, the EU and Gibraltar. One of the agreements regards the control of travellers arriving in Gibraltar that will be done by the Frontex organisation, and they will then enter the Schengen area with free movement into Spain. If the treaty is signed it will have to be approved by the European Parliament that will be formed after the EU elections from June 6th-9th. Another topic is the joint use of the airport with flights to Madrid being reinstated that took place from 2009-2011. However, there is a dispute as to who owns the land where the airport is sited. Another talking point is the protection of the 15,000 workforce who cross from Spain to Gibraltar every day that make up 50% of the total workforce. At present these workers receive a reduced pension when they retire compared to Gibraltarians that
In the News
has to be addressed “for the future”. Companies based in Gibraltar only pay 10% corporation tax compared to the 25% for companies in the Cádiz area and the aim is that this is progressively harmonised in combination with the free transfer of goods between Spain and Gibraltar. All the parties considering the agreement state that it is “very complex” and needs final polishing to satisfy everyone. When the meetings finished there was a joint statement that good progress had been made, but no concrete agreement.
The Palomares Clean-Up
On May 10th José Manuel Albares, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, went to a meeting in Washington. Along with his team of experts they met a US team to discuss the technical issues that relate to the removal of the contaminated soil in Palomares. It was stressed that the meeting was not to decide if the clean-up should go ahead, but how it could best be done. In May 2023, Pedro Sánchez met Joe Biden and the removal of the soil was the reason for the meeting. The contaminated soil is soil that was not removed following the 1966 air collision over Palomares when a US Tanker plane collided with a US plane carrying four unarmed nuclear missiles. The nose cones of two of the jettisoned nuclear missiles split when they hit the land releasing plutonium dust. US soldiers removed some of the contaminated soil shortly afterwards, but not all of it. Once removed it will be taken to a storage site in the Nevada desert.
Almería UD
On Saturday, April 27th, Almería UD football club played Getafe and lost 3-1. Mathematically, this was the final nail in the coffin and meant that next year they are relegated back to the second division after only one season. This was a home game in the ‘Power Horse’ football ground converted from the 2005 Mediterranean Games stadium. Once again, poor defence was blamed for the defeat as they had not won a single home game, conceded 67 goals, and had only won one game in the last 33. The team issued an apology to their fans “for the worst season in history” and promised to work
hard next season to return to the first division. The relegation also happened in 2011 when there were still three games to play, and 2015 on the last game of the season, but this time there are five games left to play, so a resounding defeat. On May 5th Almería (described as a “Second Division” team) scored the only goal at an away match against Rayo Vallecano, the second goal of the season for Almería, but on May 12th in a lacklustre game they lost 3-2 to Betis. On May 16th they played their last home game against Barcelona with tickets costing 70, 100 and 130 euros. The vast majority of the tickets were sold as when Barcelona might return to play Almería is completely unknown. Unfortunately, Almería lost 2-0. Their last game of the season was in Cádiz on May 25th. (The score here was not known at time of going to press). Turki Al-Sheikh, a wealthy Saudi Arabian very involved with football, bought the team for 18 million euros in July 2019 and has spent a minimum of 50 million euros buying new players, the highest amount after Real Madrid, but he was not there for the match at home on April 27th or May16th. How this will affect Turki Al-Sheikh and his patronage is not known and there are fears that he will pull out. He recently tweeted “patience has its limits”. It is likely that he can recoup the money he has spent by selling members of the team or the whole club. He also owns the land at El Toyo, which he bought for 11 million euros in November 2022, where the Dreambeach music festival will take place this year and next year. His plan has been to build a major “sports city” on the land, but whether this will go ahead is now also an unknown.
A Large Cannabis Haul
Following observation at an industrial warehouse in Vicar near Almería city, specialised police carried out a raid in early May. They found 2,000 cannabis plants in various stages of growth that weighed 350 kg and the estimated street value of all the cannabis was put at 650,000 euros. A Rumanian man alleged to be the owner of the plantation was arrested initially, and more arrests were expected. In another ‘In the News’ item we comment on the problem with stolen electricity, and in this case the amount stolen every day was said to be “enormous”.
In the News
When police started their investigation, they discovered that the warehouse was owned by the entity ‘Sareb’. This body was set up to take in all the toxic debts from the construction crisis and sell them off individually or in blocks.
Really Good Bone Marrow Inscriptions
When people go to give blood, and there is always a very good response when it is asked for in Almería province, the person is also asked about a bone marrow transplant. Up to the end of April this year, 832 new potential donors had signed up to be included on the register. There are already 8,000 signed up in Almería province and 115,000 in Andalucía. Blood donors who agree to go on the bone marrow register fill in a form and an additional blood sample is analysed for this purpose. They then go onto the World Register of Bone Marrow Donors. When a match is found, not just in Spain, with a person who needs bone marrow this is a simple procedure that does not normally need an anaesthetic. In some cases, bone marrow may have to be taken from the hip bone and in this case, there is a local anaesthetic. Many people needing bone marrow will be suffering from leukaemia or undergoing chemotherapy and every year in Spain 5,000 people suffer from leukaemia. In the world there are 36 million personal donors or bone marrow samples taken from umbilical cords, and in 90% of cases a donor is a match.
‘Dreambeach’ Opposition
The Environmental Department of the Junta de Andalucía have reacted to complaints by neighbours living near the Dreambeach festival site in El Toyo. The department have accused the PSOE party, in opposition on the Almería city council, of “fermenting unrest” and point out that the site is not within the Cabo de Gata National Park and is not in a protected area. The Junta accepts that there is a body of people living nearby who are very opposed to the event taking place but point out that Almería city council are setting up a security committee who will ensure that everything is done to minimise the impact. The council has stated that they will try to reconcile “the right to have fun and the right to rest” and there will be a full
liaison between the police, civil protection, the 112 health authorities, and the fire service. The festival will take place from August 1st-4th. In mid-May neighbours made an official ‘denuncia’ (complaint) that the work at the site was causing large dust clouds that was dangerous to health and made driving safely on the adjoining road impossible.
Asylum Seekers
In an article we deal with the process for immigrants in Spain trying to obtain asylum and measures to cut down the waiting time. On May 7th, 50 asylum seekers held a protest meeting outside the office of the Provincial Police in Almería city, complaining that obtaining an appointment at the Foreigners’ Office was impossible. Some of the demonstrators were part of the 350 people put in a hotel in El Toyo last January after they had been transferred from the Canary Islands centre. They walked the 15kms from the hotel to the police station to draw attention to their problems. Co-ordinators from the Red Cross attended the demonstration and pointed out the procedure was being speeded up and after an hour the demonstrators agreed to disband. A coach was provided to take them back to El Toyo. On May 16th it was announced that they were being moved to a hotel in El Ejido as the contract with the hotel in El Toyo was coming to an end. The mayor of El Ejido complained that they had existing problems with 32% of non-Spanish residents out of the 90,000 total, and 4,000 unregulated people were living there permanently. He asked that the initial move of 150 people was cancelled. 200 Africans were transferred to a hotel in Roquetas de Mar last October in the care of the ‘Acemm’ charity who work to help immigrants in obtaining asylum.
Mercadona Still Market Leader
On a number of fronts, Mercadona continues to be a market leader and in 2023 their profit exceeded 1 billion euros for the first time. Recent figures reveal that in 2023 they purchased products from suppliers in Andalucía that came to 3.86 billion euros, 13% more than in 2022. This included 286 million litres of milk, 70,000 tonnes of olive oil and 47,000 tonnes of olives. Other purchases
In the News
were 58.400 tonnes of oranges, 36,000 tonnes of watermelons, 28,000 tonnes of peppers, 17,500 tonnes of strawberries, 3,400 tonnes of avocados and 190,000 kg of clams. 87 million euros has been spent on ‘Ready to Eat’ lines. Of the 349 supermarkets in Andalucía, some 268 have been converted to the Efficient Store Model. There have been re-vamps, alternative stores and eight new ones in our province. Wages paid to new employees are far higher than the minimum wage and they have agreed a percentage rise for this year and 2025 with the unions, which will be increased if inflation goes up. Employees can also earn bonuses for meeting targets. In 2023 in Andalucía, they worked with 212 charitable or social groups and donated 4,700 tonnes of basic food products. There are employees in large stores who solely work on identifying products that will be donated and handle the logistics. 220 supermarkets have electric car charging points, and photovoltaic panels provide more than 16,000 kw to reduce their electricity costs, spread between stores and logistic centres.
Good Inflation Figures
In April, inflation, including the cost of electricity and food, rose slightly to 3.3% compared to 3.2% in March. This is mostly because IVA on electricity and gas returned to 21% from 10% and prepared food prices still showed a rise in cost. Core inflation applies to a basket of goods and services, ignoring energy and food prices, and this fell to 2.9%. Core inflation in February 2023 was 7.6% and the present percentage is the lowest for two years. Inflation in Spain is lower than in many other EU states and it is anticipated that the Euribor rate from the Central European Bank will come down in June, giving mortgage holders a saving in their monthly cost.
A Big Drop in Income
Following the news that Almería UD was being relegated, the Almería Chamber of Trade issued a statement. They consider that income for the city will fall by 20 million euros next season, principally in the hotel and restaurant trade. Other teams in the first division will not come here next year, so this income will be lost, including that from
support staff, trainers, referees, linesmen and physio professionals. They also claim that tourist income will be affected because first division fans coming here to watch their football team quite often return for a holiday. Another loss will be income from airlines that fly to Almería from other cities in Spain. Finally, many journalists and TV companies come to first division games, an estimated 150 each season and they stay in hotels. Almería UD will lose the income from fees paid by television and radio companies, and also money from higher priced ticket sales.
Cheap Electricity
During April, in many parts of Spain, the contribution of electricity from hydro-electric dams increased as a result of high rainfall. Coupled with electricity from wind turbines and photovoltaic solar panels, the cost of providing one MWh (1 million watts for one hour) fell to 13,67 euros, the lowest price since records were first charted, and lower than the previous lowest amount of 17,12 euros in February 2014. The cost of one MWh peaked at 233 euros in March 2022. The 8.5 million clients on the hourly variable rate PVPC tariff will see this reflected in their bills, and to a lesser extent customer with “plans” that are related to the lower prices. People with fixed price tariffs will have to wait until their contracts are renewed. Demand for electricity in 2023 fell to the level not seen since 2005. This is put down to less energy needed by certain sectors of industry, better insulation to minimise losses and a steep rise in auto-consumption due to homes, businesses and public buildings having their own solar panels. Prices we pay now are based on daily costs, coupled
In the News
with the estimates for electricity prices in the coming months and years. Energy analysts predict a rise in cost for one MWh of 43 euros in June and 64 euros in July and August although output from renewable energy is increasing every month. If the price does go above 45 euros, IVA (VAT) will come back down to 10% for these periods. ‘Eurostat’ figures relating to all 27 EU states show that apart from Denmark, prices of electricity in Spain fell the most in the second half of 2023.
The Population Increase
The Spanish Population Index Organisation has measured a population in our province, up to April 1st this year, of 761,379 inhabitants. From April last year there are 7,785 new “official” residents so they are on the padrón (the list of residents in all municipalities). Of these new residents, 70% are non-Spanish and mainly come from Morocco with an additional 1,350 people, Columbia with 470 more people and Peru with another 400. (The statistics only include numbers from the three countries with the highest arrivals). In contrast, 940 people went off the padrón when they returned to North African countries, and 310 went back to Rumania. Throughout Spain the largest numbers of new residents in the first quarter of this year came from Columbia, Morocco and Venezuela respectively. In an article we comment on the schemes in place for asylum seekers who can obtain temporary residence and work permits, leading to full residency. When they become legal and work legally, this is good for the Spanish economy.
Still Popular
In June 2022, following the autonomous community elections, the PP party (roughly a conservative party) took over the running of the Junta de Andalucía, the governing body for Almería province. Since the Junta came into being, every government had been the PSOE (roughly a labour party). There are a total of 109 MPs, so a majority of 55 MPs is enough to form a government. A survey of people who would vote for each party if there were elections in the near future, has revealed that 46% would vote for the PP giving them 58 MPs, and the PSOE would only receive
21% of the vote giving them about 22-23 MPs down from 30 in 2022. The right-wing Vox party would increase their share by 3% giving them 14-17 seats, whereas they only have 14 MPs at present.
Vera Water Restrictions
At the end of April, Vera published a ‘bando’, an official town hall bulletin, putting in place water saving restrictions the same as other municipalities have introduced on the instructions from the Junta de Andalucía. A variation is that overnight the pressure will be reduced to minimise leaks in pipework. The water and sewage treatment plant in Vera is not part of Galasa; a company called ‘Codeur’ has provided these services since 2010, and Vera town hall has a 51% stake in the company. Desalinated water is purchased from Acuamed who own the Carboneras plant, and potable water is distributed to 20,000 clients including Vera Playa. Inhabitants pay for the water used every two months the same as clients of Galasa. Currently, 6,500m of older pipework is being replaced. The restrictions are open ended until it is considered that they are no longer necessary.
Russian Interest for Ukraine
The 27 EU member states have reached an agreement to send interest earned on confiscated or frozen Russian money to Ukraine. 90% will be for the war and 10% for reconstruction. Estimates as to the amount of money varies from 3-5 billion euros per year. It is anticipated that the first transfer of 1 billion euros could start in July. After the invasion of Ukraine, 210 billion euros held by the Russian Central Bank in Europe was frozen and this money is generating a windfall interest. There is another 109 billion euros frozen in Belgium and included in the 90-10% split some 0.3% would be withheld for management costs. The US, UK and Canada have proposed that all the Russian money should be confiscated, but the EU, where most of the confiscated money is located, does not agree with such a drastic step at present.
Mojácar Infrastructure
Work costing 930,000 euros is being undertaken or planned to improve the infrastructure in
In the News
Mojácar. Water pipes will be replaced where necessary to stop leaks, along with new sewage pipes in various streets. Paving in many areas will be repaired or extended to make it safer for pedestrians and some roads will have new tarmac. The work will be completed by the end of the year. A council spokesperson stated that the work was necessary to improve the facilities for the general public and also the development of tourism.
Euro MPs
Between June 6th-9th 400 million people in 27 EU states will vote to decide who are the next 720 EU MPs. In Spain, voting by people with Spanish nationality takes place on Sunday, June 9th for 61 MPs. In a comprehensive survey throughout out all the states, 85% of potential voters thought that illegal immigrants are a problem and only 39% thought that their economy needed migrant workers. In Greece and Spain, the second and third states after Italy with the most illegal immigrants, only 14% think that it is a major problem which is well below the average of 17%. In Spain, 29% of people see unemployment as a problem that is double the average. 41% of those surveyed see health as the major concern, 38% are worried about the war in Ukraine, 24% are worried about inflation and 24% worry about environmental issues. 78% of Spaniards consider that the EU has to keep helping Ukraine and this is the third highest percentage. The poll showed that in Estonia, Finland and Poland, all close to Russia, the future long term was a big worry, described as being “the end of the world” worry. In Spain, France, Belgium and Portugal the main worry was the loss of purchasing power, described as being “the end of the month” worry.
‘MG’ Cars
The trademark ‘MG’ is owned by a Chinese company that are selling their electric car range in Spain. There are complaints from consumer organisations and the Spanish Motor Retail Association that they are deceiving buyers with a dishonest retail price. As an example, their MG4 model has a list price of 17,400 euros, but in the small print there are two conditions. The first one is that the buyer has to sign up for their finance
deals that come from Banco Santander, and the low price is after a buyer has obtained the 7,000 euros ‘Moves III’ government grant for electric cars that means a car more than seven-years-old has to be scrapped. If not, before finance charges, the retail cost is 24,400 euros. Another complaint is that the price does not include pre-delivery costs, vehicle registration nor a charging cable. Reviews from purchasers are that reliability is not good, and major spares needed for repairs can take weeks to arrive. The warranty is only for three years (the minimum period for sales of vehicles in Spain), or 72,000km. The EU is considering putting a customs duty on imported Chinese vehicles unless they agree to a cap on sales. It is claimed that their low prices are because they are “dumping” cars in the EU to achieve an unfair market penetration.
An Extreme Protest
The PP political party mayor of Garrucha, Pedro Zamora, and the deputy mayor have written a letter to the regional PSOE representative asking for an official rebuke and the immediate dismissal of the PSOE councillor Ángel Capel. For some time, his sister and mother have vigorously interrupted council meetings and the last time was April 26th when his mother was ejected from the council meeting. On May 3rd the mother asked for a meeting with the mayor to complain about the cleanliness of the streets but when she was admitted to his office it is alleged that she tipped a container of urine and excrement over his chair and the floor. After further verbal insults she was forcibly removed from the town hall by the municipal police. The mayor considers that her actions are despicable and town hall cleaners should not have had the very unpleasant task of cleaning his office. He is also asking a court to ban her from visiting the town hall.
The ‘AVE’ Budget
The ‘AVE’ (high speed train) that will eventually come to Almería city from Murcia city, a distance is 108kms in our province, has a budget amount of money from 2005-2023 of 2,885 million euros. This is the amount of money that should have been spent on the project. In reality, the money
In the
advanced is only 39% totalling 1,134 million euros. There are many reasons for this that have held up money released, that include too long a time in presenting the detailed projects, too long a time in awarding construction contracts, modifications and budget increases when a construction phase is underway, disputes and walk-outs. From 2019-2023 only 24% of the budget has been invested, and in 2021 because of the pandemic, only 45 million of the promised 587 million was advanced. Most of the sections have work underway and in 2022 some 138 million euros was advanced with another 182 million euros in 2023. Nevertheless, critics state that the arrival of the ‘AVE’ in Almería city, with passengers, is impossible by the date given of 2026.
An
Alzheimer Breakthrough World media reported on May 7th that a breakthrough had been made regarding the onset of Alzheimer. The neurologist Juan Fortea and his team made the discovery at the Sant Pau Hospital
in Barcelona. They analysed brain samples from 3,000 deceased persons and used other techniques on 10,000 patients. 500 people were carrying two copies of the apolipoprotein 4, or APOE4 gene in their genome that in 95% of them could lead to Alzheimer. Tests would reveal the likelihood of suffering from the disease at age 65, some 10 years earlier than at present. Juan Fortea stated that 2%-3% of the Caucasian population have this double gene, which is millions of people world-wide. The presence of the double gene indicates that 15% of Alzheimer patients can be accurately diagnosed because of this, and up to now there was no logical explanation. For reasons that are not completely clear, the double gene is more prevalent in northern countries in Europe than in Mediterranean countries. Juan Fortea commented that people age 65 might not want to know that they had an 80% chance of having Alzheimer disease and some of them might refuse to have the genetic test. Hopefully, the test will be routinely available in the future.
Warning Triangles and V16 Flashing Lights
There is some confusion regarding the use of warning triangles following a breakdown or accident in a motor vehicle, and the use of V16 flashing lights.
In 1999 in Spain, using triangular reflective warning devices at a breakdown or accident on the road became obligatory. Two approved triangles have to be carried, placed in front and behind a disabled vehicle on a normal road with traffic in both directions, or behind the vehicle if one way. Vehicles should have their hazard warning lights switched on, and the single or both triangles placed 50m from the vehicle, to be seen 100m away. Using the triangles is still completely legal up to December 31st, 2025. Since July 2023, because of fatalities when warning triangles are put in place on fast roads such as motorways and toll roads, they don’t have to be used there. There were 22 fatalities in 2022.
From January 2023, flashing V-16 flashing lights could be purchased that are magnetic and can be put on a car roof without getting out. They have to comply with regulations, and the 360-degree light has to visible, even in daylight, for at least one km. The internal battery has to be capable of working for 2.5 hours. Early versions are “analogue” so they produce a flash only and can be used up to December 31st 2025. Along with warning triangles not being legal on January 1st, 2026, flashing lights then have to be of the 3.0 type that are “connected” via GPS, that sends a signal every 100 seconds when switched on, and the battery has to have no less than 80% of its capacity for up to four years. The DGT (Spanish Traffic Police) can pinpoint where the broken-down vehicle is situated, and if necessary there may then be warning signs on the overhead motorway gantries. The DGT have no information as to what type of vehicle has broken down or the registration number, only where the light has been activated. An app can
be used that will notify the breakdown to your insurance company and also the emergency services so that they know if there has been a crash needing medical help, or just a breakdown.
A driver exiting a vehicle to change a wheel, or to look in the engine compartment has to be wearing a ‘Hi-vis’ reflective jacket that has to be kept in the glove box or door panels, not in the boot, and put on before getting out. The DGT recommends that there are two in the car, one for a passenger to wear if they exit the vehicle to help, but this is not required by law. Changing a wheel following a puncture is allowed, but not any mechanical repairs.
Contacting your insurance company to send a breakdown truck is highly recommended, and the driver may change the wheel for you, or take you to a garage. If it is a hire car it may be difficult to locate the jack and tools to change a wheel. Changing one on the driver’s side can be very dangerous, and the majority of Spaniards have no hesitation in calling for roadside assistance to deal with a defective tyre. Some insurance companies have a km radius around a breakdown and will take you home or to a garage within this radius, but others have no distance limit. Some companies will not turn out if you have broken down at home but others will come out, try to effect a repair, or take you to a local garage.
A Freeze on Accommodation
There is considerable unrest in the Balearic Islands regarding the numbers of tourists and the problems this can cause.
Mallorca city council are freezing the numbers in hotel and rental accommodation at the present numbers of 412,000 legal beds with 308,000 in hotels and 104,000 in registered rented accommodation. The mayor, Llorenç Galmés, has ruled that the proposed increase of 4% to 430,000 in the next few years has been scrapped. In April and the first week of May, the number of traffic jams and saturation at places of interest for tourists have been the same as previously experienced only in July and August. Llorenç Galmés states that this freeze has the approval of the tourism industry who understand that the mix between tourists and residents is leading to problems for both sectors. He heavily criticises the previous council who had announced that there would be a moratorium. He states that this was “fake” and numbers of legal beds went up by 90,000.
The Minister for Tourism, Marcial Rodríguez, has explained, “We are not reducing the number of places, we are leaving the ones that exist today. Of the legal places, which are the ones we have under our responsibility, we will leave the ones that are already there.” A rally with proposals for a similar ceiling took place in Ibiza on May 24th.
The council in Ibiza are intending to limit vehicle numbers to stop congestion in the summer months. Formentera introduced a similar ban in 2019 from June 1st to September 30th that is considered to be successful. There is a daily quota and personal cars or rented ones have to register on a website. There is a fee of 6 euros per day (minimum 30 euros) for cars and 3 euros per day (minimum 15 euros) for motorbikes. During this period quad bikes, caravans and motorhomes are banned. People coming with their car from any of the other islands to work there, do not have to pay.
The Ibiza council say that there were 51,000 visiting vehicles in 2001 and this has gone up to 207,000 last year, with 40% arriving in July and August. As in
Formentera, residents from the other islands who come to Ibiza to work in the high season will not be affected, but there will be a limit on the number of cars that can be rented on the island by ferry or air passengers. The Regional Government will have to approve the measures before they come into force, but this is not expected to be an obstacle.
Antoni Costa, a spokesperson for the Government of the Balearic Islands, states that there needs to be an organisation set up with representatives from the tourist industry, island residents, and councils, to agree an overall policy. The Director General for the Economy and Statistics is being asked to carry out a “macro survey” to collate the opinions and claims of residents in the different islands, overcrowding and the views of the tourist industry. Antoni Costa states, “We have to keep growing, but not in volume. Restrictive and courageous measures must be taken, and the Government of the Balearic Islands is willing to do this.”
There is already a tourist tax in the Balearic Islands related to the type of accommodation and the time of year. In the high season it is four euros per night in luxury hotels, three euros in mid-range hotels and accommodation, and two euros for cruise ship passengers, apartments and rented villas, with one euro per night in campsites. Between November and April there is a 75% reduction.
So Now You Know...
Marilyn Monroe
On June 1st, 1926, the iconic “blonde bombshell” actress, Marilyn Monroe, was born in Los Angeles with her birthname of Norma Jean Mortensen. She overcame a difficult childhood to become one of the world’s biggest and most enduring sex symbols and a famous film star. Her most memorable roles were in films such as “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”, “The Seven Year Itch” and “Some Like it Hot”. In total, the films in which she appeared grossed 200 million dollars. She is known for her relationships with Arthur Miller, Joe DiMaggio, and almost certainly President John F. Kennedy. Aged 39, she died of a drug overdose in 1962.
D-Day
80 years ago, on June 6th, 1944, known as D-Day, the largest amphibious landing in history began in the early morning hours as Allied forces landed in Normandy on the northern coast of France. Known as “Operation Overlord” it was planned for several months and involved 1,527,000 soldiers from 47 Allied Divisions from the UK, the US, Canada and France, with 4,400 ships and air defence from 11,000 aircraft. The Allies used various ruses to stop the Germans thinking Normandy had been chosen for an invasion, including false newspaper reports and radio broadcasts. It was described as one of the best kept secrets of the war.
The First Telephone
On June 2nd, 1875, the inventors Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Thomas Watson made the first sound transmission from one room to another. By chance, Watson plucked a reed close to the pole of an electromagnet and Bell heard the sound. Because of this they switched their focus to discovering how to make voice transmissions. After a few months they could transmit audible frequencies. On March 10th, 1876, Bell successfully spoke through the new instrument to Watson in the next room, saying “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you.” Watson founded another company making marine engines and then ships.
Queen Elizabeth II
On June 2nd, 1953, the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II took place at Westminster Abbey. It poured with rain for almost the whole day but this did not stop enormous crowds lining the streets, and street parties all over England. It was a historical event because after various refusals television cameras were allowed into the abbey providing there were no close-up facial pictures. Sales of televisions rocketed, and crowds of people went to locations that had a special TV licence for the day. 3,300 people bought tickets in 57 minutes to see the transmission at the Royal Festival Hall. 20.4 million people watched it on 2.7 million TVs.
The Boat Race
On June 10th, 1829, the first Oxford and Cambridge Universities boat race took place. Two eight-man crews competed in the race held at Henley-on-Thames after Cambridge University issued the challenge for the race to take place over a distance of 2.25 miles (3.62km). It was called the “Summer boat race” as rowing did not start until after the Easter holidays, and the nickname of the “boat race” was subsequently adopted. Due to start at 6pm, this then became 7pm and 20,000 people lined the shores. The Oxford crew forced the Cambridge crew into shallow water near the bank so the race started again at 7.55pm. Oxford were victorious.
St. Paul’s Cathedral
Work started on building the cathedral on the highest point in London on June 21st, 1675, following the Great Fire of London in 1666 that gutted the previous St Paul’s Cathedral. It was the fourth church on the site since AD 604. The architect was Sir Christopher Wren, knighted in 1673, but his initial plans were rejected on the grounds it was too similar to ornate Roman Catholic cathedrals. The dome is 366ft (111m) tall and weighs 60,000 tons, and the cathedral was the tallest building in London for 250 years. It took 40 years until it was finally completed and Sir Chrisopher Wren was buried there when he died in March 1723, aged 90.
Dealing with Immigration
The
Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Migration and Social Security has approved an extraordinary allocation of 49.3 million euros “to alleviate the collapse of the reception system for asylum seekers and refugees”. The extra money is additional to the present budget of 666 million euros.
Following the war in Ukraine and also the arrival of tens of thousands of people on boats, the present system cannot cope with the numbers. There were 37,000 people being dealt with at the end of April and the authorities are working at 99% of their capacity. The new aim is to process 6,500 additional people every month until November. A spokesperson has stated, “These measures and advances demonstrate the commitment of the Government of Spain to improve the efficiency and agility of the immigration processing processes in all of Spain (including Almeria province), thus facilitating better service to citizens and professionals in the sector”. Already, measures implemented include using the electronic processing of applications through the ‘Mercurio’ system, and the department for the ‘Processing of Immigration Files’ has been given additional staff.
Spain is one of three countries in the EU where Venezuelans, Colombians and Central Americans lead the list of people seeking entry. EU guidelines are that immigrants should be processed within six months, but the actual time is far greater, so many people who may not be allowed to enter Spain after processing clog up the system. The war with Ukraine is a big problem and in 2022 Spain was the EU country with the fifth highest number of Ukrainian refugees, granting temporary protection to 200,000 people. This mass exodus forced the reception network to be stretched to its limit with up to 24,000 temporary new beds needed, mainly in hotels.
We have previously commented that wouldbe immigrants from the Canary Islands were put in two hotels in the El Toyo area of Almería
city. A spokesperson has stated that “many of these people are fleeing political instability in West African countries and are applicants for international protection, former citizens of Mali and Senegal in particular.”
The Spanish reception system for asylum seekers and refugees consists of three phases which have been stretched to the limit for months. In the first stage, the identity and profile of a person is established, their application for entry into Spain is looked at, and their next destination decided, which can include deportation. The second phase is a reception phase, which usually takes place in centres or hostals, and successful applicants are given temporary residence that allows them to work, temporary accommodation in the place where they are, and access to schools and health care. In the last stage, which is only accessible to people who are considered to be totally genuine refugees or asylum seekers, including Ukrainians, rental assistance is offered to allow them to live independently. This lasts for 18 months, extendable up to 24 months in cases of special vulnerability. The cost of the first two phases is 57 euros per place per day, but the cost of the last one is only 32 euros per day. After this period a person will be granted full resident status. Apart from the Migration Authorities and the Ministry of the Interior, the Red Cross play a very large part in the processes.
The EU has given Spain money to open 17 new centres for a total of 5,700 people and this is in the process of being implemented. Unfortunately, as is the case in the UK, some town halls are opposed to a centre opening in their municipality.

Los Bandidos Conquer the Hills of Bédar
19 Los Bandidos runners took on the fourth race in the Circuito de Carreras Populares Diputación de Almeria 2024 in Bédar on Saturday, 18th May. This year’s race started under an extremely hot sun and only cooled slightly as the evening wore on. One Bandido described it as ‘hot, hilly and painful’!
The 9.6k route went up through the village, out and up into the campo, then climbed, steeply, back into Bédar. Even the downhills were steep! Seven Bandidos won trophies in their age groups and, as a team, finished 5th, with the four fastest runners; Nigel Smith, Steve Slack, Mark Ratcliffe and Delphine Morin making up the mixed team. The teams who finished ahead of us were all male.
The winner finished in 34:49 and the first lady in 46:02. 182 runners crossed the finish line. Trophies were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each age group as well as to the overall winners.

Los Bandidos was set up in June 2018 with a small group running the 5k Mojácar Paseo, and now has road cycling, sea swimming and triathlon groups. All ages, nationalities and speeds are welcome, whether permanent residents or holiday makers. Los Bandidos are keen to integrate and support the local community. We are currently collecting non-perishable food and toiletries for the Red Cross Food Bank.
We are very sociable and most sessions are followed by a post-activity coffee, cake or breakfast, depending on the time of day. Follow us on Facebook to keep up-to-date with our latest activities (https://www.facebook.com/ groups/490933409244200). We look forward to seeing you soon.

complement the three playgrounds that were completely remodelled last year. In the playground located in Cueva del Lobo the investment amounts to the maximum amount of 24,502 euros, in Marina de la Torre it will be 51,954 and in the El Palmeral one, 34.7447 euros. VAT has to be added to these amounts.
The projected contract is framed in compliance with the responsibilities that Mojácar Council must provide in accordance with the provisions of article 26 of the Regulatory Law on the bases of local regime, which includes, among others, public parks.
The
“Classis Motorbikes of the
80s” Association’s IV ”Classics on Road” Meeting
Press Release by Mojácar TownhallMojacar was the meeting point for the group of “Classics On Road” motorbike enthusiasts who chose the locality for the IV Edition of a concentration of lovers of classic motorbikes from the 70s to the end of the 90s.
Over a weekend they went around the locality on their vintage motorbikes to share good times, experience, passion and their love of motorbiking in Mojácar. They were received in Plaza Nueva by the Sports Councillor, Jesús Montoya, and the Tourism Councillor, María Gracia, to welcome them to the municipality.
The more than 40 motorbikes making up the group gathered there, creating a beautiful and incredible image of a Plaza Nueva full of historic motorbikes, all looked after and maintained in a very special way.
Mojácar Council offered them a guided tour of the old town on which they could find out first-hand about the locality’s history and most emblematic points.
In Mojácar they were also able to enjoy a small concert and get to know the surroundings and landscapes that characterise the area. Travelling along roads conducive to the enjoyment of motorbike riding and getting to know a little more about an area that everyone liked.
Classics On Road is defined as a community that connects all those who have in common their passion, memories, dedication, in some cases collecting and always the pleasure of looking at motorbikes, many of them now unique models, from three fantastic decades for motorcycling: 70s, 80s and 90s, all of them fully operational and suitable for use.
“Classics on Road” is the name of the “classic 80s motorcycles” association created to relive and enjoy the years of adventure of the time and bring together people who feel this way, creating a community of classic motorbike enthusiasts and staging meetings in different parts of Spain. With this, not only do people with this common denominator come into contact and enjoy the passion of travelling on secondary roads full of charm, it also promotes culture through getting to know new places.
This IV meeting turned out to be a complete success. There remains on the table the offer to return and learn more about a locality that they described as “full of charm.”

Jokes of the Month
Arthritis
A drunk man who smelled of beer sat down on a subway seat next to a priest. The man’s tie was stained, his face was smeared with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading. After a few minutes, the man turned to the priest and asked, “Say, Father, what causes arthritis?” “It’s caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, and a contempt for your fellow man,” the priest replied. “Well, I’ll be damned,” the drunk muttered, returning to his paper. The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologised. “I’m very sorry. I didn’t mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?” “I don’t have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does”.
The Frog
A 92-year-old man is walking through a park and sees a talking frog. He picks up the frog and it says, “If you kiss me, I will turn into a beautiful princess and be yours for a week.” The old man puts the frog in his pocket. The frog screams, “Hey if you kiss me, I will turn into a beautiful princess and make love to you for a whole month.” The old man looks at the frog and says, “At my age I’d rather have a talking frog. I get lonely sometimes living on my own.”
The Ex-Wife
A man and his wife are at a restaurant, and the husband keeps staring at an old drunken lady swigging her gin at a nearby table. His wife asks, “Do you know her?” “Yes,” sighs the husband. “She’s my ex-wife. She took to drinking right after we divorced seven years ago, and I hear she hasn’t been sober since.”
“My God!” says the wife. “Who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?”
The Magician and the Parrot
A magician worked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician did the same tricks each week. However, there was a problem, the captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shouting out the secrets in the middle of the show, “Look, it’s not the same hat.” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table.” “Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades?” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything as it was the captain’s parrot. One day, the ship hit a reef and started to sink and everyone was told to abandon ship. The magician found himself alone with the parrot, adrift on a piece of wood, in the middle of the ocean. They stared at each other but the magician hated the parrot and didn’t utter a single word. This went on for a day, then another, and another. Finally, after a week, the parrot said, “Okay, I give up. Where the heck is the boat?”
The Policemen
Three police officers were standing in line at the Pearly Gates. Saint Peter asked the first officer, “What did you do with your life?” “I was a police officer along with my two friends,” he responded. “What kind of police officer?” Saint Peter asked. “I was a vice officer. I kept drugs off the streets and out of the hands of kids.” “Welcome to heaven. You may enter”.
“He asked the second man what he did as a police officer. “I was a traffic officer,” said the man. “I kept the roads and highways safe.” “Welcome to heaven. You may enter.” He asked the third man what he did as a police officer. “I was an armed police officer at the entrance to the Houses of Parliament” replied the man. “Wonderful! I’ve been waiting for you!” replied Saint Peter. “I need a toilet break and a sandwich! Can you watch the Gates for me?”
Donations
A local charity office realised that the organisation had never received a donation from the town’s most successful business owner. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute. “Our research shows that out of a yearly income of at least 500,000 dollars, you did not give even one dollar to charity. Wouldn’t you like to give back to the community in some way?” The business owner replied, “First, did your research show that my mother is dying after a long illness, and has medical bills that are several times her annual income?” Embarrassed, the charity man mumbled, “Um, no.” The business owner then says, “Or that my brother, a disabled veteran, is blind and confined to a wheelchair?” The stricken charity worker began to stammer out an apology, but was interrupted again. “Or that my sister’s husband died in a traffic accident leaving her penniless with three children!” The humiliated charity organiser, completely beaten, said simply, “I’m sorry, I had no idea.” On a roll, the business owner continues, “So if I don’t give any money to them, why should I give any to you?”
The Shy Man
A very shy guy goes into a bar and sees a beautiful woman sitting at the bar. After an hour of gathering up his courage he finally goes over to her and asks, tentatively, “Um, would you mind if I chatted with you for a while?” She responds by yelling, at the top of her lungs, “No, I am not going to sleep with you tonight!” Everyone in the bar is now staring at them. Naturally, the guy is hopelessly and completely embarrassed and he slinks back to his table. After a few minutes, the woman walks over to him and apologizes. She smiles at him and says, “I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. You see, I’m a graduate student in psychology and I’m studying how people respond to embarrassing situations.” To which he responds, at the top of his lungs, “What do you mean you want 200 dollars to sleep with me tomorrow?”
Kids
After a prolonged drought when the rain came, all the animals in the forest were happy except the Kangaroo. When the others asked him what the reason was for such sadness, the Kangaroo revealed that the rain meant that all its kids would now be playing inside.
Putin
Putin is held hostage by a terrorist. A Russian truckdriver stops at the back of a long queue on the motorway. He sees a policeman walking down the line of stopped cars to briefly talk to the drivers. As the policeman approaches the truck, the truckdriver rolls down his window and asks, “What’s going on?”
Policeman: “A terrorist is holding Putin hostage in a car. He’s demanding 10 million rubles, or he’ll douse Putin in petrol and set him on fire. So we’re asking drivers for donations.”
Driver: “Oh, ok. How much do people donate on average.”
Policeman: “About a gallon.”
