Still a Shortage of Rainfall
There is considerable confusion regarding regulations for saving potable water that are not yet mandatory in Almería province. If they do come into force, town halls will publish a “bando” which is an official notification. The Junta de Andalucía have made a change in the regulations that relates to swimming pools at hotels, municipal pools, health centre pools and those at registered tourist accommodation. These pools can be filled, but not private or community ones. Although the regulations are not yet mandatory, consumers are being asked to save water as much as they can. In Málaga there is a limit in force of 160 litres per person per day, but this does not mean that the same limit will apply here, with 200 litres being suggested. Policing or enforcing the regulations for individuals are impossible, so the authorities will be relying on our collective social responsibility to cut down on our normal use.
In our “In the News” section we explain that since March 1st , the IVA(VAT) on electricity has gone back up to 21%, assuming the generating costs do not exceed a set level. If they do, IVA will go back down to 10%. For people in economic hardship on the ‘PVPC’ tariff who have the special ‘bono social’ help, the 10% applies to all of 2024. The increase in IVA is expected to add seven euros a month to the average bill.
A suggested tourist tax in Almería city was not approved at a recent council meeting as they consider that excess tourism is not a problem. A few days later, the Junta de Andalucía announced that they were considering introducing a tax, but whether this might come into force remains to be seen. In Mojácar, where the population shoots up substantially in the summer months a tax might make sense. The money raised is intended to improve municipal services.
Pulpí town council are in the process of passing legislation for a 1km beach in the Palmeras area of San Juan de los Terreros to be designated as
one where dogs will be allowed. It will be the first official beach for our canine friends in our area.
There is still considerable opposition by El Toyo residents against the ‘Dreambeach’ festival taking place there. Almería city council are claiming it is a private agreement by the festival organisers and the land owner (who is the owner of the Almería UD football club) and providing all the permissions are in place it will happen. Earth moving has started, and residents were delighted when it stopped recently, but the city council announced that this was only because of high winds!
In an article we explain how manufacturers and dealers are trying to overcome any reluctance to buy all-electric vehicles and how their weight is considerably more than other fuelled vehicles. With the continuing row about a possible two million potholes on roads in the UK, one reason given is that the heavier electric vehicles degrade the road surface much quicker.
Our “What’s On” section lists various events that may be of interest to our readers.
Wednesday, May 1st, “Day of the worker” is a national fiesta when town halls, banks and official offices will be shut, and the following Sunday, May 5th is Spanish Mother’s Day. Wednesday, May 15th is a major fiesta day in Madrid in honour of San Isidro, a farmer, who is credited with greatly helping the poor in 1172. Mojácar and other towns and villages hold a “romería” when decorated farm vehicles go into the countryside for a picnic.

A Secure Internet
Fernando Suárez is President of the Council of Colleges of Spanish Computer Engineering. He has recently published some advice to make our internet activity as secure as possible. He warns that browsing without proper precautions allows cookies and trackers to collect a significant amount of personal data. This data, which is often collected without our full consent, can be used to create detailed profiles, targeted advertising and in the worse situation be sold to third parties. He underlines that using public Wi-Fi networks can be dangerous, because a cybercriminal on the same network may be able to capture critical personal information and browsing history. Private browsing using Chrome or Safari where users think they have prevented access by third parties, is also not completely safe, and information is still being monitored by our internet provider, network administrators and the websites themselves. He recommends the use of VPNs to ensure third parties do not have access, and the encryption used makes data inaccessible to the internet provider. Fernando Suárez thinks that using VPNs should be mandatory on public networks. Ensuring that you have the latest updates from your operating system provider is also important as they are constantly introducing “patches” to combat illegal “back door” access. He recommends using uBlockOrigin (efficiently blocks trackers), LastPass or 1Password (robust password managers), Private Badger (controls who collects your data online) and NoScript or ScriptSafe that protects against malicious scripts that cyber criminals use to introduce malignant codes. These are extremely serious as they can result in illegal access and data theft including P2P file sharing, emails, SMS, Bluetooth and USB interfaces.
Saving Potable Water
Last month we explained the measures that may be introduced by the Junta de Andalucía to save potable water in 13 municipalities in our
area. One proposal is a limit of 200 litres per person per day with no filling of pools and no garden irrigation. A recent amendment to the regulations are that filling hotel, municipal, health centres and registered tourist accommodation pools is exempt, but not private or community pools. A very large difference has emerged in the daily amount used in different cities in Andalucía. In Jaén and Seville the average daily use is 99 and 105 litres, 160 litres in Córdoba, and in Huelva, Málaga, Cadiz and Granada not more than 120 litres. In contrast, in Almería city in 2023 the average use was 227 litres, in 2022 it was 206 litres and in 2021 it was 219 litres. There is no immediate explanation why Almería city heads the list by such a long way. The total consumption from 2021-2023 includes water used for pools and gardens of course, not just within a property. 200 litres per day in an average month of 30 days is 6,000 litres which is 6m3. Galasa bills cover a two-month period, with different amounts of money charged for a consumption of up to 10m3 per month, so less than 20m3 in block 1 (74 céntimos per m3), from 20m3 to 30m3 in block 2 (1,86 euros per m3) and for more than 30m3 in block 3 (2,80 euros per m3) so a big difference. There is also a service charge for “renting” their meter which is 9,78 euros per month, but all these prices include IVA (VAT). During February, in the Costa del Sol and Campo de Gibraltar areas, the daily limit in force was set at 160 litres. In other parts of Andalucía such as Seville, the average daily consumption has come down. This is attributed to a vigorous “awareness” campaign that saving water is necessary, and a steep rise in cost when the number of m3 per month goes into successive blocks. Any limit on daily use has to rely to a large extent on people understanding that saving water is a good thing and implement it themselves.
300 Days, One Goal
On Sunday, March 17th, the Almería UD football club scored the only goal in a match against Las
In the News
Palmas. This ended 300 days and 32 matches since the Almería team won a match on May 20th, 2023. The player Baptistao managed to get the ball into the net, although he was accused of squandering another opportunity. Whether the team will be relegated to the second division remains to be seen.
Voting In The UK General Elections
Last month we explained how a person can register to vote in a UK General Election. When you have successfully done this, you receive a letter inviting you to apply for an absent vote. This can be a proxy vote or by post. The procedure can be seen at www.gov.uk/applyproxy-vote and www.gov.uk/apply-postal-vote. The letter recommends applying for a proxy vote if the local postal service is irregular, as a postal ballot pack has to have been received and sent back in time for the vote to be counted. The online application needs a scanned photograph of a signature in black ink on white paper. When the General Election is announced and Parliament is dissolved, there are only 25 days to prepare for the election and a person has to know who the candidates are. In the current situation a General Election has to be called by December 17th (the fifth anniversary of the parliament) at the latest with elections on January 28th, 2025. It would appear to be certain that the election will be called a lot earlier, and pundits think October or November 14th so as to not coincide with the US Presidential elections. There are places here where a letter can be sent to the UK using the special Royal Mail service, that will be the quickest way, and the Focus magazine has been told that from collection to delivery this should take seven days. An email, received after applying for a postal vote refers to the forthcoming May 2nd local elections, although a UK resident living in Spain can only vote in General Elections. It states that voting packs will be posted on Monday, April 15th and have to have been received back by 10pm on Thursday, May 2nd.
Still 4.5% Interest
At the beginning of March, the Central European Bank, in discussion with the EU President, Cristine Lagarde, announced that the ‘Euribor’ rate of interest put up to 4.5% last September had to stay at this level. The only olive branch was that it “might” come down in the summer, depending on the inflation percentage. The aim is to reach 2%, but the estimates at present are 2.3% this year, 2% in 2025 and 1.9% in 2026. Cristine Lagarde stated that the Euribor might be able to be reduced, even if inflation was not down to 2%, depending on other factors. The interest rate will be reviewed in April.
Juanma Moreno and the Pope
The President of Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, announced that he would be having an audience with His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican on March 21st, and he would invite the Pope to visit Andalucía. Friday, March 21st is “The Eve of Sorrows” before the start of Holy Week. Juanma Moreno will be the first President of Andalucía to have visited the Vatican and meet the Pope. He is a devout Roman Catholic and is a member of one of the “brotherhoods” in Seville, who process through the streets with the very heavy religious statues at Easter. His predecessor, Susana Díaz, asked for an audience when the Pope made a comment about unemployment amongst young people in Andalucía, but after some discussions as to possible dates it did not take place. A previous President, Manual Chaves, met Pope John Paul II when he came to Andalucía in 1993.
Almería Province Births
Figures from the Spanish Institute of Statistics reveal that in 2023, up to the end of November, there were 6,028 births in our province. This is 200 less than the same period in 2022 and 1,100 less than in 2016. The 2023 figures are the lowest ever in our province at 9.13 births per 1,000 head of population. A large difference is the ages of mothers giving birth, from one birth
In the News
to a child under 15 years of age to 74 in young people between the ages of 15-19 years of age. 228 births were to women between 40-44, and 23 to women between 45-49, with 4 births to women over 50. The 3,195 unmarried women who had children during the past year is very close to the 3,376 births to married women. This is very different to 2009 when married women had 5,562 children and unmarried ones only had 2,021. In eight rural municipalities there have been no births for a long time, which is a worrying state of affairs. In Alsodux there has not been a single birth since 1996, not since 2013 in Bajarque, and not since 2005 in Olula de Castro. In Turrillas and Velefique the last births were in 2014. To try and stop young people from moving away there are special discounts on mortgages, and another one for people who move to rural municipalities.
Electric Scooters
Last month we had an article regarding electric scooters. In early March, Almería City Council announced a 15-day period for interested people and associations to send in their opinions before the new regulations are drafted. María del Mar García stated that they wanted to know which regulations people thought should be made compulsory and which ones might be recommendations.
An African Ship Embargoed
The harbourmaster of the port in Almería recently ordered that a cargo ship flying a Liberian flag, the ‘Seher Yagci’, was detained in the port following complaints from a crew member and a general inspection. The crew member complained to the harbourmaster that he had injured his hand 20 days ago and was being refused permission to leave the ship for medical attention. Following the harbourmaster’s instruction the man received medical attention at hospital for his broken hand and he was repatriated to his homeland of Turkey. The living conditions for the crew
were described as totally unsatisfactory with unsanitary accommodation, various toilets were out of action, and there was insufficient food. Also, the ship was considered to be “deficient in matters relating to marine safety and environmental protection”. The ship owner paid a “bond” of 80,000 euros, to guarantee that the remedial work was carried out. Subsequently, with the deficiencies rectified, the ship was allowed to leave.
Illegal Electricity Hook-Ups
At the beginning of March in Almerimar, police swooped on a private house where they found 1,200 cannabis plants. The illegal connection of electricity bypassing the meter over several months was said to have been equivalent to the amount needed for 80 homes. In 2023 there were 2,600 illegal connections detected by ‘Endesa’ in our province, up from 2,275 in 2022. The calculated amount of stolen electricity in 2023 was put at 26Gw/h (gigawatts), the amount normally used by 7,500 homes. Endesa, have specialist teams of workers, and alongside the police were dismantling 49 illegal hook-ups every week. In all of Spain the illegal consumption of electricity, almost always from growing cannabis, is stated to be 2.2TW/h (terawatts), the amount used in Seville over 12 months. Apart
In the News
from the illegality, the excessive use often puts too much demand on transformers that can burn out. Endesa has put in new transformers in some locations that are up to three times the normal capacity where cannabis growing is rife. This is to try and stop complete areas being without electricity when the transformers fail, but this means a higher cost. There are now trip switches at the transformers to shut them off when overloaded. They were fitted to 12 of the 35 transformer stations in Almería city last year.
Improving Waiting Times
In February, the Junta de Andalucía introduced the Andalucia Health Waiting Plan to reduce the time people have to wait for operations. In March the President, Juanma Moreno, announced that in the first month, 3,300 people had been operated on who were on the lists for the longest times and this would continue with the aim of even more patients every month. 88.8 million euros is being spent on reducing the waiting lists by 60% in 2024. The total amount of money is 283 million euros, with 163 million for hospitals. The official waiting times are 30 days for a test, 60 days to see a consultant and 180 days for an operation. The aim of the new initiative is no more than 180 days for 700 types of surgery, and no more than 120 days for the 11 most common operations and 90 days for operations such as cardiac surgery. In some cases, operations will take place at private hospitals, with no cost to the patient, if there is no alternative. Last November, official figures from the Health Department were that people in Andalucía were, on average, waiting 121 days to see a specialist. There are bottlenecks, and waiting times to see a neurologist were 213 days, for dermatology 146, and for traumatology 135 days.
The Illegal Boat People
Figures for 2023 show that 6,325 people in 575 boats came to Almería province seeking a better life, up from 4,300 in 2022. These
numbers are higher than any other coastal province in Andalucía. In all of Spain there were 58,000 people arriving on our shores, also up on 2022 numbers. 90% were men, 5% were women and 5% children. In Italy there were 157,000 and 46,000 in Greece. Sadly, in 2023 a total of 2,700 lost their lives on the journey to Spain, totalling 9,100 since 2019. The route to the Canary Islands is the most lethal, and up to 80% die on the very long journey and their bodies may never be found. As is common in other coastal parts of Spain, dead bodies washed up on beaches in Almería province, or taken aboard by coastguard vessels, have their photograph taken along with their clothes, and are fingerprinted if possible. These are sent off to each country where they have set off for the authorities to try and identify them. On February 26th in the middle of the afternoon, two off duty legionnaires from the base at Viator were near a beach in Roquetas where 14 illegal immigrants had just come ashore, including one man who collapsed on the beach. The legionnaires discovered he was in cardiac arrest and gave him CPR until two Guardia Civil police officers arrived. All four took it in turn until an ambulance arrived. The 22-year-old man was quickly admitted to the intensive care ward at the Poniente hospital where he was found to be dehydrated as well. A spokesperson from the hospital stated that without the prompt and prolonged CPR he would not have been able to be revived.
Cinema Numbers
Seeing films at a cinema, or on large screens that are common during the summer, is still very popular. There are four main places in our province which are the Yelmo cinemas in Almería city and Roquetas de Mar, the Monumental in Almería city, and the Ocine in El Ejido which between them have 11 screens. In 2023 a total of 910,000 people went to see films at these cinemas, 36% more than 2022. Ticket sales were 5.4 million euros, up from 3.9 million euros in 2022. In Seville, Málaga
In the News
and Cádiz during 2023 each city had a total number of filmgoers that was over 2 million.
AI Nudes
Last month we explained that in Spanish law a child under the age of 14 is not considered to be liable for an illegal act, and cannot be prosecuted. This has been highlighted in another case, the second of its kind, in Zaragoza where 13 young boys at the same school used an AI image program that converts a person wearing clothes to one without any clothes. The group took normal photos of 20 girls who they wished to appear naked. When several girls found that this had been done and shared via WhatsApp, the police were notified. Six of the boys are aged 13, and the others are 14 and 15. One allegation is that they were selling the images for five euros! They will appear in a juvenile court to answer charges of offences relating to child pornography and the offence of breaching moral integrity. The boys under the age of 14 will receive a caution. Most of the boys deleted the images when they found the police had been notified, but their mobile phone numbers linked them to sending them.
A Tourist Tax?
The Podemos political party proposed recently that Almería city council should introduce a “tourist tax” with the money raised being spent on “the conservation of heritage and the promotion of the city”. The proposal was that it would be a charge per night on tourist accommodation in hostals, hotels, apartments let to tourists, and campsites. The councillor Alejandro Lorenzo pointed out that this is already in force in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands in Spain, and also in Rome, Amsterdam and Berlin. The imposition of the tax in Almería city was rejected at a council meeting on the grounds that tourist numbers were not excessive and it would hurt the hotel trade. A few days later, Juanma Moreno, the President of Andalucía, announced that they were looking into a tourist
tax. A very different tax is in place in Venice where they are charging 5 euros per day over the age of 14, from April 25th until May 5th between 8.30am and 4.30pm, and then every weekend until the middle of July with a review for August. Visitors who come to the city in the evening for events such as concerts do not have to pay. Venice is a stopping point for large numbers of cruise ships and the city is inundated.
The Mercadona Workforce
Juan Roig, the president of the family-owned company Mercadona, has announced that their total workforce at the end of 2023 was 104,000. A total of 98,700 are in Spain and 5,300 in Portugal, after creating 5,000 jobs in the last financial year. In Almería province the company has more than 1,400 employees. In 2016 the company embarked on a very major updating of their supermarkets, productivity and digital improvements and a re-vamped website. Since then, their workforce has gone up by 32%. All employees are on fixed contracts after a very short trial period, and the wages they pay for new employees are far higher than the minimum wage.
Free Electricity!
We have commented before that renewable energy sources from wind turbines and photovoltaic solar panels can at certain periods provide all the power needed in the Spanish mainland. At the end of February there were strong winds in many parts of Spain from the storm “Louis”, including strong winds in Almería province, and long hours of sunshine as well. The cost of producing electricity is put at Megawatt hours, so 1 million watts needed for 1 hour (MW/h). When Spain and Portugal were given permission by the EU to subsidise the cost in June 2021, this was when producing 1 MW/h consistently cost a lot more than 45 euros that was the reference amount of money. Fortunately, this soon became unnecessary and electricity was cheaper. The cost at the end of
In the News
February went down to levels never seen before, and on Sunday, February 25th the 24hr cost was an average of only 3,06 euros, and just under 4 euros on the following Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, February 28th the cost was 0 euros, so free, between 11am to 5pm, and only a small amount over another 11 hours. With less wind and no sunshine in the evening, the cost went up to 66,9 euros from 8pm-9pm and 50 euros from 9pm-10pm, so crazy prices. On Saturday, March 9th with storm Mónica affecting many parts of Spain including Andalucía, electricity was almost zero cost. The average for the 24hrs was 4.4 céntimos per kW/h, and it never went over 4.7 céntimos. From March 1st, IVA (VAT) on electricity bills is back to 21% if the production cost is below 45 euros per MW/h or 10% if over. The extra cost on bills is put at an average of 7 euros per month. For the 14,000 people in our province who are on the ‘bono social’ tariff because of economic hardship, IVA remains at 10% throughout 2024. As we have explained before, the cost of electricity in 2024 is 25% related to the monthly, quarterly and 12 month “forward buying” prices, not just the daily cost. It will be 40% in 2025 and 55% from 2026. When electricity costs nothing to generate, our bills still show some charges that are fixed, including the 5% “duty”, the same as duty on tobacco and alcohol that during the energy crisis went down to 0.5% but has now been put up to 2.5%. This duty on electricity has been a bone of contention for a very long time.
Los Genoveses Beach
‘Expansión Viajes’ publish a list of the 15 “most beautiful beaches in the world” where there are “beaches that promise unforgettable experiences for lovers of the sun and the sea”. Their 2024 list includes Los Genoveses beach in the Cabo de Gata in the Níjar Nature Park. They also highlight the beach as being “an ideal place for windsurfing enthusiasts and those who enjoy outdoor activities, offering spectacular scenery and ideal conditions for water sports.” Many
films made in the province feature this beach over the years. Other beaches in the list include ones in Mexico, Malta, India and the Caribbean.
Another ‘El Algarrobico’ Hotel Ruling
The Andalucía High Court has agreed with the Junta de Andalucía that Carboneras town hall cannot rule that the designation of the land where the hotel is situated has to be changed from being urban land suitable for development, to non-urban land. They point out that in 1994 the land was declared to be protected, and was never urban land. The Carboneras ‘PGOU’ (urban planning document) stated that the land could be developed, but this was incorrect. Because of this, the building licence issued in 2001 was always illegal. This means that the council can make a demolition order, which has to be done before anything else. An independent assessor is currently valuing the hotel as it stands now, but a previous decision was that the developer ‘Azata de Sol’ is not entitled to compensation. At the last Carboneras town hall meeting to de-classify the land, it was not approved by a majority of the councillors with five councillors in agreement, but seven voting against the motion. There would seem to be the possibility that the developer could go to court and claim a large amount of compensation from the council. There have been threats that if the council
In the News
does not comply with a court ruling from 2018, they could be fined 700 euros every 20 days.
The ’Narco Launches’
On Saturday, March 9th, the Guardia Civil police monitored six ‘Narco’ launches that were tied together at the Cala Grande cove between San José and Los Escullos. They had gone there to take refuge from the high seas and winds that reached 45km/h. These launches are usually up to 15m long and can travel at 60 knots with three or four 300 horsepower outboard motors. The Guardia Civil police could not launch their own boats because of the adverse conditions and they only had one in operation as the others were undergoing repairs. They monitored the launches from the clifftop and a helicopter flew overhead. Their ’SIVE’ coastal radar system had detected their arrival. A police spokesperson stated that the launches were not carrying drugs or people, but several of them were fully loaded with petrol containers. These can be used for replenishing their own fuel supplies or transferred to other launches who need more fuel. The Maritime Delegate from the Junta de Andalucía stated that in view of the weather conditions the police could take no action and if they had done, their lives would have been at risk. The journey time from the port of Nador in Morocco is only two hours, unloading passengers, drugs or taking fuel onboards is done in minute,s and the launches can carry 40-50 people or 3,500kg of drugs. The would-be immigrants trying to reach the Almería coast sometimes pay the ‘Mafia’ organisers 15,000 euros each for the trip along with transport on land, and often have family members already living in Europe. The “crew” in the boats take photos showing that they have delivered whatever they are carrying and the photos are sent to the organisers as proof. The police state that unless the launches break down or run out of fuel, there is no way they can be boarded when travelling at 60 knots. The mayor of Nijar has called on central government
to “act once and for all” to stop these launches and complained that the Coastal Guardia Civil Police, particularly in Níjar, are in a “precarious situation”, understaffed and poorly equipped.
The Oldest Woman
María Branyas who lives in a nursing home in Girona, Barcelona, recently celebrated her 117th birthday, and she is the oldest recorded woman world-wide since January 2023. Family members arrived in groups so as not to cause her any stress, and her youngest daughter, aged 80, was one of her visitors. Many people in her family tree reached ages of 80 or 90. María has some hearing loss and mobility problems but she is perfectly lucid and puts her age down to there being no urgency or rush in her life. Her father died at sea when she was eight and her mother was a housewife who was always at home. She has survived the ‘Spanish flu”, two World Wars, the Civil War in Spain and the Franco regime. A health scientist has taken blood, urine and mouth swabs to see if there is any difference to normal people and initial results are that her cells are about 10 years younger. Currently in Spain there are 20,000 people aged over 100, and 758 over 105. The exact number of people over the age of 110 is not recorded.
Claimed Food Poisoning
Eight UK nationals are due to be summoned to court in Palma de Mallorca accused of belonging to a criminal gang and taking part in fraud. The ‘Fiscalía’ (Spanish Crown Prosecution Service) is asking for prison terms of between six and eight years. They are alleged to have taken part in the fake food poisoning scandal between 2014 and 2017 when they persuaded hotel guests in Magaluf to claim compensation from their tour operators, with a percentage going to the group. Various tour operators paid the money rather than going to court and trying to dispute the tourist’s claims. They deducted the compensation from the money paid to the hotels, and the claim is that this amounted to
In the News
more than 3.2 million euros over the three-year period. Leaflets were handed out to holiday makers, and the people who went along with this ruse were told to go to farmacias, told which medication they should ask for and keep the receipt. They were promised compensation of around 40,000 pounds sterling with their claims handled by a UK company. It is claimed that 800 fraudulent claims were made and only 38 were genuine. The fraud came to light when it was noted that there were no claims of food poisoning from German, French or Nordic clients in the same hotels eating the same food. In November 2022 another identical fraud was carried out against the German tour operator TUI. A firm of lawyers in Sheffield are alleged to have made 540 claims in a “class action” for tourists who had gone to the Cape Verde resort during the summer.
Los Gallardos Roundabouts
The Spanish Department of Transport has approved modifications for three new roundabouts on the N-340a road in Los Gallardos. When the construction project is approved the work will be put out to tender with a budget of 2.2 million euros. The largest roundabout will be at the existing “T” junction where the GarruchaLos Gallardos Mojácar bypass road joins the N-340a. Another roundabout will be where the AL-6109 road to Bédar is situated. The third one will be alongside the transport, stone and gravel company, on the N-340a road going to the motorway. The roundabouts were first proposed and provisionally agreed several years ago.
Fewer Hours For Hospital Doctors
The Spanish Ministry of Health is proposing that doctors in hospitals will no longer have to work 24-hour shifts, and instead there would be 12-hour shifts, which is being discussed with the unions. It is a very complicated matter as “on-call shifts” greatly contribute to a doctor’s salary. One viewpoint is that 24-hour shifts are an anachronism that puts at risk the rest, work-
life balance and mental health of healthcare professionals along with patient care. There is a suggestion that doctor’s coming off shift are involved in more traffic accidents. The Confederation of Medical Unions points out that the gross pay for a doctor is 20-30 euros per hour, 50% less after tax, and on-call 24-hour shifts are needed to improve their pay. One oncall doctor who was woken up at 3am, had to deal with life threatening multiple traumas that a young boy had suffered and was going into cardiac arrest. She pointed out that her 100% attention was needed for several hours when only a few minutes before she had been asleep. Unions point out that the number of doctors would have to be significantly increased if the long shifts were stopped. Statistics from hospitals are that 87% of doctors work the long shifts, but 60% of these think they are too long. A doctor over the age of 55 has to volunteer to work long shifts, but 70% do this to substantially improve their pay.
Cosentino Court Cases
The multinational company Cosentino, based in Cantoria, has been awarded damages in a French court. This relates to their ‘Silestone’ quartz worktops. A company who supplies other types of worktops, consistently maintained that the Silestone product was not safe and was a health hazard. In 2017 the French company embarked on major publicity against the use of Silestone, and on French TV the company likened the Silestone product to asbestos saying that the only difference was that asbestos was not used for worksurfaces, and that Silestone contained 40 noxious substances not suitable for food preparation. A court had subsequently asked the company to refrain from making these claims but this did not stop them. Cosentino pointed out that Silestone had all the necessary certificates that stated it was suitable for use as kitchen worktops. The French company was ordered to pay Cosentino 20,000 euros for commercial damage, 30,000 euros for moral

damage and 5,000 euros court costs. At a court case in Viscaya in the Basque country in early March, Francisco Martínez-Cosentino Justo, President of the Cosentino Group, was acquitted in relation to the ‘Novogranit’ case. A judge ruled that top management of the Almeria company were absolved of any type of liability in relation to the occupational disease (silicosis) that affected six workers at the marble factory located in Vizcaya. The owners of the factory claimed that Cosentino had failed in their duty to give full information on the hazards of working Silestone products. Lawyers for Cosentino stated that safe working practices were fully spelt out by the company which was a top priority, but despite this an “ex-gratia” compensation amount of money had been paid to the six workers that stopped any claims in a civil court.
The Pulpí Dog Beach
Pulpí town council are in the process of passing legislation for a beach to be designated as one where dogs will be allowed. This will be the first one in our Levante area and is intended to be open for the summer months. The chosen beach is the one in the Palmeras area in San Juan de los Terreros that is about 1km in length. The Pulpí Councillor for Urban Planning, Alfonso Jiménez, states that this is the perfect beach for this purpose as it is not in a busy area.
Near Fatal Accident
Rubbish lorries in Almería city empty waste material containers from the side of the lorry, not at the back, and drivers of these vehicles have a camera to monitor the loading, tipping and emptying of the containers into a hopper. Recently, a driver noticed that a man had fallen into the lorry when a paper and cardboard container had been tipped in. He went to the side of the lorry and determined that the man was either unconscious or dead, so the emergency services were called. They extracted the man who was unconscious and was taken to
hospital. How he came to be in the container was being investigated. A spokesperson from Almería city council thanked the driver profusely, who had worked for the company that has the concession to collect rubbish since 2015. They stated that without his intervention the man would have undoubtably been killed.
Another Mojácar Mural
A 400m2 mural has been painted on the streetfacing side of the new Mojácar bus station. Part of it shows two Mojaquera women with a pitcher on their heads and their faces partly covered with the traditional Arabic scarf. The mural is the work of Nicolás Rodríguez ‘Niko’, a renowned urban artist from Almeria, and the professional photographer María Ángeles Fernández, known as “Maki”.
‘AVE’ Protest
‘PP’ political party mayors from Almería province and Murcia recently took part in a protest regarding the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) in front of the Lorca station. They are demanding that Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s Prime Minister, takes urgent action to ensure that passenger trains will run on the AVE line from Murcia city to Almería city in 2026. They pointed out that the underground station at Lorca had not yet had a contract awarded for the work to start, and this was vital. They also called for the immediate re-opening of rail traffic on the Águilas-Lorca-Murcia line for both freight and passengers. ‘PP’ Almería city councillors are
In the News
demanding that the Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, comes to the city and explain why that, of the 1,775 million euros budgeted for the ‘AVE’ in our province between 2019 and 2023, only 428 million euros have been advanced, 24% of the funding that was promised. The councillors complain that if the money had been forthcoming the work would have been completed, and the official date of 2026 when the line is supposed to be open is very unlikely.
The Madrid Studio Apartment
The portal ‘Idealista’, which lists rental properties that owners put on their site, recently advertised a studio apartment in Madrid for 400 euros per month. It was fairly unusual as the size was given at being 8m2, only suitable for one person. A man replied to the advert thinking the 8m2 was a mistake. He went to see it, and found that there was a long outside entrance along a passage way (described as a courtyard) without any lighting at night, and in the apartment, you could only take two steps. It had a microwave above the door, a very small hob with two rings, a baby fridge similar to a hotel minibar, and a small rail for clothes. There was an IKEA chair /bed that folded down, a mini washbasin and a very small shower tray. The external toilet is shared with other residents on the same floor (there are 16 apartments in the block on two floors) and accessed by walking back down the corridor. Every property in Spain has a “catastral” reference number and this gives the area as 6m2! The owner claimed he had 40 enquiries and the next morning he told people contacting him that it was let. Prison cells in Spain are usually 8m2 and since 2010 new ones are 14m2. According to Madrid’s latest urban planning document for 2023, a minimum home is considered to be one that has a dining room, kitchen, one bedroom and one bathroom and whose usable area is greater than 40m2. Of the 7,100 rental flats advertised on Idealista in Madrid at the beginning of March, 668 were less than 40m2. A 22m2
apartment in the centre of Madrid was recently available to rent for 1,485 euros per month.
Counterfeit Money
The High Court of Andalucía have rejected an appeal by a woman against her conviction in a court in Almería. An unidentified person used her bank card and pin number to pay in 27,000 euros at four bank machines at the end of February 2020, but the 500-euro notes were all fakes. The woman claimed that her card had been “swallowed” by an ATM in Rumania, but this was entirely rejected by the court as the card was subsequently used in Spain, and if it had been “lost” she had never reported it and asked for a replacement card. It was agreed that this was a strange case as the woman had never been caught in possession of these fake banknotes, but they had been paid into her account by the unidentified person who had her bank card and pin number. Bank machines sorting the notes rejected the fake ones and the transactions were traced to her account. The woman had been given a prison term of three years for being involved in transactions using counterfeit money, and a fine of 10,000 euros. The upper court stated that this was a sentence from the lower court was appropriate.
‘Dreambeach’ 2024
At a recent Almería City council meeting, a motion that the Dreambeach Festival should be moved to another location was defeated. Nearby residents at the El Toyo site have formed a pressure group to try and stop the festival taking place near to where they live. It was pointed out that the location was a private agreement between the festival organisers and the owner of the land who is the Saudi millionaire who bought the Almeria football club. He intends, eventually, to build a sports complex there. The council state that the festival is an important economic and media event that will promote Almería city on the world stage. It was stated that all the licences are in the process

of being granted. One complaint is that tickets are being sold without permission from ‘AENA’, the Spanish airport authority, as the site is very close to the airport and the stage lighting might affect pilots on incoming or outgoing flights. The agreement for the festival to be held at El Toyo is for 2024 and 2025.
Vote Rigging
Elections in Melilla have always been suspect, with many claims that work was promised and money paid to get votes. In the last elections, postal employees delivering applications to vote by post were accompanied by members of the police to stop the postal workers being attacked. A judge has ordered that Mustafá Aberchán, a former vice-President from the CPM party, was arrested and put in prison on remand without any bail, along with six other CPM politicians. Only one of them avoided being sent to prison by coming up with bail of 5,000 euros, and one of them testified by a video link from Barcelona. The allegations are that starting in 2018, work was promised or money paid for votes, that amounted to six million euros. A police investigation was ordered following the May 2023 elections with similar claims. Faced with major claims of corruption in 2023 the law regarding postal votes was quickly changed. People who had applied for postal votes could only take them back to post offices in Melilla. As part of the fraud the organisers took votes to post offices throughout Spain that before the new law was allowed. The returning of votes in the municipalities where the postal votes had been requested was then put in place in all of Spain. This does not apply to people who vote from abroad.
The 38.5 Hour Week
When the new Spanish Government came into power it was proposed that this year, the working week was reduced to 38.5 hours and 37.5 hours in 2025. Unions and employer federations have been discussing this, and nothing will happen
until next year. This is because in various cases it is very difficult to introduce. One of these is agricultural workers, and workers in the hotel industry who often work the longest hours. Also, many large industrial companies work three 8-hour shifts and the reduced working week is not possible. A further consideration put forward by employers is that extra people would have to be employed and if not, payment for overtime would affect their profit margins.
Rafa Nadal Withdrawal
Rafa Nadal recently took part in an exhibition game against the rising Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz in Las Vegas, before taking part in the Indiana Wells Masters competition. Three days before the start he announced that he was not able to compete at “the highest level” so he was withdrawing. He went on to say, “I can’t lie to myself or lie to the thousands of fans. I will miss them all and I am sure that the tournament will be a great success.” Rafa will be 38 on June 3rd, and he has previously withdrawn from the Doha and Australian Open. At the Brisbane tournament in January he suffered a muscle microtear. His world ranking is now down to being 652th, so he has to be invited to appear at tournaments. He still hopes to play in the Monte Carlo tournament and Roland Garros in Paris from May 26th to June 9th. The Spanish star player Paula Badosa has also pulled out of the Indiana Wells tournament because of injury. She suffered a fractured vertebra during the WTA 1000 event in Rome.
Personalised Organ Pipes
The organ at the cathedral in Almería city was designed by a famous organ builder who had made an organ for the Royal Palace in Madrid, paid for by King of Spain. He was told to provide a “magnificent and sumptuous” one for the cathedral that was inaugurated in 1769. An organ builder from Granada made a new organ in 1944 but this is now unusable. As part of the 500th anniversary celebrations of when the cathedral
In the News
was built, the organ is going to be restored and the 250 pipes will be replaced. People who donate money will have their names engraved on the 66 metal pipes, or a plaque put on the 184 wooden ones. The donations will be specifically related to the size of the pipes and whether they face the front. Names put on the largest forward-facing pipes will cost 2,010 euros. Proposals to restore the organ started in 2004.
The Mojácar Medical Centre
The mayor Francisco García, two councillors and the project architect José Maldonado recently met at the site of the new medical centre that is nearing the completion of the construction phase. It is alongside the new bus station and covers 2,398m2 on a plot of 9,196m2 and will have cost 3.4 million euros. The next phase is the installation of all the equipment. When it is in operation, the medical centre in Mojácar
village and the one on the beach road will be shut. There will be three doctors and nurses for normal appointments, an x-ray facility, physiotherapy area, a dental treatment room for children, three consultant areas, and a special ambulance entrance directly into the accident and emergency department. For staff on call, there will be six rest rooms. The area where it is sited is considered ideal for patients coming from the village or the beach. There will be one traffic problem that also applies to the bus station. Vehicles coming out, including those of people living in the village, cannot turn left. They have to turn right, go down to the Commercial Centre roundabout and come back up. At the height of the tourist season traffic coming down to the Commercial Centre can back up considerably. Control of traffice in some way for vehicles coming from the Garrucha direction, would probably solve the problem.
So Now You Know...
Heartbreak Hotel
Elvis Presley first performed ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ at a live performance in 1955 in Louisiana. RCA Records who had just signed Elvis to their label, recorded the song in January 1956 at The Methodist Television, Radio and TV Studios, Nashville along with several other songs. After releasing ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ as a single, by April 21st it simultaneously topped six U.S. Billboard pop and country charts at number 1, which had not been expected. It became Elvis’ first single to top well over 1 million sales and was the best-selling single in 1956. The song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame thirty-nine years later in 1995.
Gmail
On April 1st, 2004, but not an “April fool”, Gmail was rolled out for the general public. It had been used as an internal message system by Google employees for over 12 months. Before then, inboxes were full of spam, there was no easy way to see messages or store them, and emails had to be constantly deleted to stay under the storage limit. Gmail blocked almost all of the spam and 1GB of storage was free, 100 times more than previously. Initially, it was used on desk-top computers because Android-powered smartphones were still in the experimental stage. ‘Smart Compose’ is an A1 feature to cut down key strokes.
The Musical ‘South Pacific’
Staring Mary Martin and Enzio Pinza, the musical ‘South Pacific’ opened on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 7th, 1949. It was the fifth collaboration between composer Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) and lyricist/librettist Oscar Hammerstein (1895-1960). It was produced by the director Josh Logan and was an immediate huge success, with 1,925 performances. The first touring company performances ran for five years and the popular film version came out in 1958, shot in the Fiji and Hawaiian Islands. Many of the songs became firm favourites with audiences and went on to be recorded by many famous singers.
The Beatles Split Up
On April 10th, 1970, Paul McCartney issued a press release about his solo album ‘McCartney’. When asked about the Beatles getting together, he said there were “personal differences, business differences, musical differences, but most of all because I have a better time with my family. Temporary or permanent? I don’t really know.” This drove a further wedge between the group, particularly with John Lennon. He pointed out that he had released four albums and he never mentioned he was breaking away from the group. In December 1970, Paul McCartney started the formal process to dissolve the business partnership.
Improved Coca-Cola
On April 23rd, 1985, Coca-Cola Company chairman and CEO Roberto Goizueta appeared before the press gathered at New York City’s Lincoln Centre. It was to introduce the new formula, which he declared to be “smoother, rounder, yet bolder, a more harmonious flavour.” Unfortunately, people thought it tasted more like Pepsi! On the New York Stock Exchange, shares of Coca-Cola dropped, and Pepsi shares went up. By June, 8,000 people a day were ringing their head office to complain, with additional staff quickly drafted in. On July 11th the company announced that the original Coca-Cola Classic drink was back in production.
Milk Bottles
On April 8th, 1879, milk was sold in glass bottles in the US for the first time. The ‘Echo Farms Dairy’ were the pioneers, the milk stayed fresher longer and delivery was a lot easier. Before then, milk was dispensed from large containers in shops or streets into whatever the customers used in their homes. Milk in bottles meant that the bottle could be taken back to where it had been bought, or given back to a milkman making home deliveries. It was calculated that every bottle was used 22.5 times before it was broken, or used for other purposes. Eventually, wax cartons that were much cheaper and more convenient replaced the bottles.
Long Term Rental Laws
There is considerable confusion by landlords and tenants regarding the current regulations and how they work in practice.
New central government regulations were published in February to come into force from March 13th in “stress areas”. These are municipalities where the normal rental market has been affected by the large numbers of tourist accommodation and the rents asked are above a set average. There is a cap on the prices that is administered by the separate autonomous communities, in our case Andalucía. In Catalonia they already have this in place with 140 municipalities in stress areas. For small landlords the renewed rent is frozen at the previous contract price. There is no uniform price for new contracts because this depends on the age of the property, whether it has a lift, garage or community pool, so there is a “low and high” range of prices.
The regulations have not been greeted with enthusiasm by the ‘Tenants’ Union’ who say that the rental market will decrease when owners decide not to rent out their property. Francisco Iñarreta, spokesperson for ‘Idealista’, the very large rental portal, has stated that “The only way to turn around the dramatic rental situation is not by acting on prices but on supply”. An example in Catalonia is a property that Idealista have at 1,600 euros per month, but with the new “stress” criteria the rent should be 984 euros and another one would have to be reduced from 1,172 euros to 874.
For normal non-stressed properties rented through an agency, the rent can only be increased annually by the CPI (Consumer price index) with a 2024 maximum of 3%. In February this was 2.8%. Tenants are asking that if there was no increase in 2023, can the landlord apply an increase for both years at the same time? To put the rent up a landlord has to notify the tenant one month before the annual contract date, assuming the contract specifies that there will be periodic
price reviews. There is an option for a one-off 10% increase if there have been “substantial improvements” to the property, or a contract is renewed for more than 10 years. If the contract is for a five-year period, and neither party want to terminate it, it is automatically extended for an additional three years. If a landlord intends to terminate the contract the tenant has to be given four months’ notice.
Following a rental period of one year, a landlord can give two months’ notice that they want the property back. There has to be a justifiable reason, such as needing it for their own use, for a “first degree” blood relative including a child or parent, or for a spouse following the final judgement of a legal separation, divorce or annulment of the partnership. Health reasons may apply if a doctor considers that a relative has to move to a different area. With contracts signed after March 2019 there has to be a clause in the contract that after one year the property may be needed within five years. The person legally entitled to move into the property has to do so within three months, otherwise the tenant can apply to return to the property by going to court, at the same previous rent for another five years.
Renters in certain circumstances can claim a 10% discount of up to 300 euros, if under 32, out of work more than 183 days, an incapacity level, or a widow / widower over 75. These are deductions made on the annual ‘Renta’ income tax declaration. All very complicated!
Working Nights
Figures from ‘Eurostat’ indicate that in Spain, 6.2% of the working population either work through the night, or on shifts that start in the late evening. In Portugal and France, the figures are only 3% but considerably more in some Eastern European countries, particularly Slovakia, where there are a large number of industries that work 24/7. Shutting down a factory that normally works nights can result in problems when they open up again, such as getting furnaces going. The big question is whether working at night is a good or bad thing.
Additionally, in Spain, only 24% of workers have a working day that starts in the morning, and the working day is longer which is reflected in the tourism and hospitality sectors. 18.6% are working at 6pm and 11% at 8pm. The equivalent hours in France are only 12% and 4% respectively and in Germany it is 8% and 4%. Having a midday break in Spain is of course the norm in many professions, but the hourly working week is slightly more.
The Spanish Minister of Labour, Yolanda Díaz, recently commented that having restaurants open until 1am was crazy, but the restaurant and hospitality sectors in Madrid quickly denied this. There are many large hotels who need night staff in reception, possibly an under-manager, kitchen staff to provide room service, someone from housekeeping and there may be a maintenance employee. Staff at night in a 24/7 airport are a prime requirement on the airline desks and in baggage handling, cleaning personnel and in bars and cafes. Air traffic controllers and their staff have to be there during the night and workers are needed at clubs and discotheques. In our “In the News” section we comment on proposals for hospital doctors to only work 12 hour shifts not 24 hour ones.
The Spanish daily newspaper ‘El País’ recently interviewed various people who work nights. An air traffic controller working nights commented that he worked 10.30pm-7.30am and when he started working this shift, aged 22, it didn’t affect him
unduly, but 15 years later with a growing family it was far more complicated. A female worker who works from 1am-10am is married to a man who works 9am-6pm so they only have a few hours together during the week and this affects their children as well. Pay is a big incentive of course and one night worker earns 15 euros per hour instead of 11 euros during the day. Night workers who sleep during the day often have to stay awake to go and see a doctor, take a car to a garage, or visit offices that can only be done during daytime hours and this disrupts their sleep cycle.
Medical experts point out the body’s biological clock is geared to sleeping at night when the body temperature drops, and brain activity is reduced along with heart and respiratory functions. One expert advises night workers coming off shifts to wear sunglasses to help them adapt when travelling home. Another one stresses that night workers needed to have regular times when they are having meals, on shift and off shift. A security guard works morning shifts Monday to Friday one week, afternoon shifts the second week and night shifts the third week. He stated that you had to be very organised and adapt to the different situations.
One medical expert pointed out that thousands of years ago most people went to bed at night, but there were a few who acted as guards during the night, so there were two distinct daytime and nighttime people who existed side by side.
Electric Car Misconceptions
The Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers, “ANFAC”, are trying to educate potential purchasers of 100% electric vehicles, dispel false claims, and confirm any perceptions that are true. Last year 55,000 vehicles of this type were sold in Spain, but this was only 5.7% of all sales.
The idea that electric cars are prone to catch fire has been dismissed by statistics from Norway who have more electric vehicles than any other country. There, only 20% of vehicle fires occur in electric vehicles. However, when a fire does happen that is electrochemical in origin, special measures have to be put in place to extinguish it. Water and foam have no effect and fire departments have to use thermal blankets.
There have been reports of excessive breakdowns, but experts say this is because the design is still being modified by some manufacturers, and experience of dealing with faults will give greater reliability. Álvaro Sauras, Vice-President of the Spanish Association of Electric Vehicle Users, states that electric motors have far fewer moving parts and repairs are fairly simple. A petrol car will need repairs after 120,000kms, but electric cars should not need major repairs before 300,000km. There is one drawback because electric cars are heavier, so replacing tyres will have to be done more often.
Batteries are now far more reliable and should last for a very long time, in theory 2.5 million kms for the best ones, although with age their efficiency will drop by 10%. Álvaro Sauras states that owners of electric vehicles drive better, which extends the life of the battery.
One serious complaint, that is very valid, is that there are not enough charging points. In the Low Countries there are 577 public charging points per 100,000 inhabitants. In the 27 EU member states the average is 106, but in Spain only 53. At the end of 2023 there were 30,000 public charging points but the aim was to have 100,000. Ultra-
fast charging points only apply to 6% of the total, and cannot be used for cars with relatively small batteries. Electric car owners complain that there are not enough slow charging points in cities (unlike the UK) and a home charging point is not possible in apartment blocks where 65% of people in Spain live, with another 16% renting their property. A slow charge at home takes from 8-10hrs, but this should last for 100-200 kms. Cars in the price range 30,000-40,000 euros will normally have a range of 300km on a motorway, and more in a city. Manufacturers of the most expensive ones claim a range of 600-700km.
The Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition has yet to introduce regulations that will result in a universal charge payment system, which is in force in Portugal. Several different apps are needed, maybe 8 to 10, and there are complaints that not enough charging points allow card payment.
A common viewpoint is that electric cars are very expensive and price for price, compared to conventionally fuelled vehicles, they lack many features. This is still true to a large extent and the 2023 “Car of the Year” Jeep Avenger 100% electric version costs 36,000 euros compared to the petrol model at 22,000 euros. If buyers pay more than 40,000 euros the price difference is not so great. Chinese imported cars are cheaper and the BYD Dolphin model is priced at 32,000 euros with a 240hp motor and 300km range although the EU is threatening to impose import taxes on Chinese cars if they try to flood the market.

Debby’s Marathon Success
Debby Courtnage, of the ‘Wacky Barbers & Hairdressers, Mojácar’ recently completed the 42.2kms (or 26.2 mile) Barcelona marathon after weeks of dedicated training. She succeeded in her aim to raise badly needed funds for the PAWS / PATAS Animal Shelter and, as we go to press, she has raised over 3,800 euros. Anyone wishing to donate more money can do so via Gofundme or call into the salon on Mojácar playa and donate in person. This is the second marathon Debby has completed and she gave a huge THANK YOU to everyone that sponsored her and the messages of good luck and support which kept her going to the end. She explained that PAWS/PATAS recently took in over 100 dogs from another shelter and are totally overwhelmed. Any contribution, no matter how small, will make a difference in helping their animals find their forever homes.
Macenas Castle
Mojácar town hall have announced that a restoration project for the Macenas castle is part of their 2024 budget and the cost will be 55,500 euros. The castle has three levels with the ground floor originally holding gunpowder and spare parts for their arms. The first floor was a kitchen and rest room and the second-floor housed cannons and rifles. Also, 200,000 euros is allocated to improve three children’s play areas and another 200,000 for beach road tarmacking.
Mojácar Solidarity Race
An International Women’s Day solidarity race was held in Mojácar, promoted by the Local Council in collaboration with the Red Cross and the “Los Bandidos” group of Mojácar athletes.
The festive day started at 10.30am with different activities such as a bio-dance workshop that served to warm up or to stretch for many participants in preparation for the solidarity race. Red Cross volunteers created a space for the little ones with board games, a gymkhana park, children’s bingo and Twister.
More than 200 people took part with a 5-kilometre route along the promenade. All the proceeds have benefitted the Red Cross. The event finished with a giant paella for all the participants and their families.
The prizes for the best classified were presented by Mojácar Council councillors and the President of the Mojácar Red Cross, Concepción Rivero Puche. The winner in the men’s category achieved a time of 20 minutes and five seconds and the best women’s time recorded was 20 minutes and 25 seconds.
This charity race has been organised in Mojácar for several years and has always been very popular. It is not only a sports day, it is also the recognition of the residents of Mojácar and nearby towns of the work of the Red Cross.

Jokes of the Month
The Homeless Man
A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner. The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, “If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?” “No, I had to stop drinking years ago,” the homeless man replied. “Will you use it to gamble instead of buying food?” the man asked. “No, I don’t gamble,” the homeless man said. “I need everything I can get just to stay alive.” “Will you spend this on greens fees at a golf course instead of food?” the man asked. “Are you NUTS!” replied the homeless man. “I haven’t played golf in 20 years!” “Will you spend the money on a woman in the red light district instead of food?” the man asked. “For a lousy ten bucks I’d be sure to pick up a horrible disease,” exclaimed the homeless man. “Well,” said the man, “I’m not going to give you the money. Instead, I’m going to take you home for a terrific dinner cooked by my wife.” The homeless man was astounded. “Won’t your wife be furious with you for doing that? I know I’m dirty, my clothes are in tatters, and I probably smell pretty disgusting.” The man replied, “That’s okay. It’s important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up beer, gambling, golf, and sex.”
Questions
A husband and wife were golfing when suddenly the wife asked, “Honey, if I died would you get married again?”
The husband said, “No sweetie.”
The woman said, “I’m sure you would.”
So the man said, “Okay, I would”
Then the woman asked, “Would you let her sleep in our bed?”
And the man replied, “Ya, I guess so.”
Then the wife asked, “Would you let her use my golf clubs?”
And he replied, “No, she’s left handed.”
Fishing
A wealthy businessman sees a poor man fishing by the river every day. One day, he approaches him and says, “If you worked harder, you could afford a fishing boat!” The poor man nods and asks, “And then what?” The businessman replies, “You could catch more fish, sell them, and buy a fleet of boats!” The poor man nods again, “And then what?” The businessman, getting excited, says, “You could have a fishing empire and be rich like me!” The poor man smiles, “And then what?” The businessman says, “Then you could relax and fish all day!” The poor man chuckles, “Like I am doing now?”
The Missing Dog
A man went to the police station to report his missing dog. The officer asked, “Can you describe him?” The man replied, “He’s a fluffy brown dog with a white patch on his chest.” The officer said, “No, I meant in terms of his personality.” The man thought for a moment and said, “Well, he’s cunning, manipulative, has a loud bark, and loves attention. Basically, he’s like my ex-wife.”
The Golfer and the Genie
A golfer finds a genie who offers him three wishes. The golfer thinks for a moment and says, “I want to be the best golfer in the world.” The genie snaps his fingers and the golfer suddenly has the perfect swing and an encyclopaedic knowledge of golf. The golfer tees up and hits a shot that goes straight into the hole. The genie nods and says, “You’ve got two more wishes.” The golfer thinks for a moment and says, “I want to be the richest golfer in the world.” The genie snaps his fingers and the golfer suddenly has a billion dollars. The genie asks, “What’s your third wish?” The golfer replies, “I want a neverending supply of golf balls.” The genie looks at him incredulously and says, “You know you could have asked for a private jet, right?”
The Wise Guru
A traveller climbed a mountain to seek advice from a wise guru. After days of climbing, he reached the top and asked, “Oh wise guru, what is the secret to eternal happiness?” The guru meditated for a while and then whispered, “Good WiFi.”
Train to Catch
A man asks a farmer near a field, “Sorry sir, would you mind if I crossed your field instead of going around it? You see, I have to catch the 4:23 train.”
The farmer says, “Sure, go right ahead. And if my bull sees you, you could catch the 4:11.”
The Genie
A man is walking along the beach when he comes across a bottle. He picks it up and rubs it, and out pops a genie. The genie says, “Thank you for freeing me from the bottle. I will grant you one wish.” The man thinks for a moment and says, “I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii, but I’m afraid of flying. Can you build me a bridge from here to Hawaii?” The genie replies, “That’s impossible! Think of the logistics! The engineering! The resources! Come on, think of something else.” The man thinks for a moment and says, “Okay, I’ve got it. I want to understand women.” The genie looks at him and says, “How many lanes do you want on that bridge?”
Oops
A young man was very much in love with a beautiful girl. One day she told him that the next day was her birthday. He told her he would send her a bouquet of roses... one for each year of her life. That evening he called the local florist and ordered twenty-one roses with instructions that they be delivered first thing the next morning. As the florist was preparing the order, he decided that since the young man was such a good customer, he would put an extra dozen roses in the bouquet. The young man never did find out what made the girl so angry with him.
The Diagnosis
A middle-aged man goes to see his doctor for a check-up that reveals some not too serious health problems. The doctor speaks to the man’s wife alone and says, “There are no major problems with your husband now. However, I recommend you cook a healthy evening meal for him every day, not convenience food, and let him watch his sports afterwards. Do not complain about things too much, as he might get stressed. Limit his exposure to his in-laws and make love to him once a week. If you do all these things, he’ll probably live another 20 years”. On the way home her husband asks her, “What did the doctor tell you?” She replied, “You haven’t got long to live”.
A Suggestion
On a Miami to Chicago flight there was a lively youngster who nearly drove everyone crazy. He was running up and down the aisle when the flight attendant started serving coffee. He ran smack into her, knocking a cup of coffee out of her hand and onto the floor. As he stood by watching her clean up the mess, she glanced up at the boy and said, “Look, why don’t you go and play outside?”
