IKEA in Roquetas An enterprising Roquetas shop keeper has become an official ‘IKEA’ order and delivery centre. Miguel Ängel Sapiña was aware of the popularity of the offers, but clients had to travel to Murcia or Málaga, in the case of the Murcia store a journey of two hours and some 200 kms. Miguel therefore went to the Madrid headquarters and received authorization to open his Roquetas outlet. Items can be ordered, collected and delivered (locally at present) with the same guarantees and with the “IKEA family” discounts. Julio Iglesias Award Julio Iglesias is now 70 years old and has been performing for 45 years. He recently received a “Guiness Book of Records” award, presented to him in Peking by the very popular pianist Lang Lang, as having sold 300 million vinyl or CD albums, the most of any “latin” performer. He was also awarded a Chinese prize for being the most popular international artist in China. He is back in Spain in June and finishes his Spanish tour at Roquetas on July 13th. New Housing Plan The Spanish government have announced new regulations to deal with the modernization of houses that can then be put up for rent. Another 1,500 million euros is to be advanced for poor families or those on low incomes who are renting for a maximum of 600 euros per month but only earning or receiving less than 1,600 euros per month. The grant will provide 200 euros a month towards the rental cost.

‘Ryanair’ In Court Again Any publicity is good for ‘Ryanair’ of course, but a poster landed them in court in Málaga on April 30th. “Adecue”, a Malága based consumer organization have objected to a poster showing six bikini-clad women with the slogan, “Red hot prices, like the crew!” The group complained that the poster was a “blatant sexual connotation”, completely unrelated to flights, and discriminating under sexual equality legislation as no men feature in the image. ‘Ryanair’ say it is a charity poster. Similar adverts, again with enormous publicity following, were banned in the UK in 2012.

New Minimum Age proposals A teenage girl in Albacete aged 13 years was recently killed by her much older partner causing a national outrage. Age 13 has been the legal age at which consensual intercourse can take place in Spain for many years. Many countries in the EU have a minimum age of 15, whilst some countries have a minimum age of 14 when the partner is under 21. Malta has an absolute minimum age of 18. The new minimum age for consensual intercourse is to be debated by various interested parties before a new age is fixed. The contraction of marriage in Spain is to be raised to 18 years or more, with parental permission on both sides lowering the age to 16-18 for minors, the same as current UK laws. Penalties and offences for sexual grooming, “cyberbullying” on the Internet or social networks are to be strengthened. No child under the age of 3 will be looked after in a residential home. Children of this age needing surrogate or adopted parents will be placed in a family home, initially as an emergency solution. Access to alcoholic drinks and their consumption, subject to over 600 different regulations throughout Spain will be simplified and the minimum age raised to 18. 5 billion euros is to be allocated to establish the new regulations and assistance required.

Although not a particularly windy day to start with, along the coast on Thursday April 25th, the sea and waves were nothing short of spectacular. The sea boiled up with considerable damage to the beach areas, beach showers, module buildings of toilets and lifeguards, water pipes, electrical supplies and beach bars. In Garrucha, enormous waves came well over the promenade. The Garrucha harbourmaster reported waves hitting the sea defenses of up to 10 metres in height. As beach bar owners and council employees started to clear up the next day, and fully assess the damage and amount of sand that had disappeared, there were still heavy seas. Garrucha authorities estimated the cost of repairs as being 35,000 euros. Beaches in Garrucha and Carboneras have been promised additional beach sand when the Carboneras port is dredged in a few months, but probably not before the summer season, and there are now more large areas of sand that have

Mojácar Bowling Green The mayoress of Mojácar Rosa María Cano has announced that with in a few days that work on the artificial bowling green will be started. Alan Bramble and Anthony Millington from the Mojácar Bowling Club attended the press conference when the plans were announced for the start of the project in the Marina de la Torre area, near the Football ground. The work is scheduled to take 3 months, at a cost partly subsidized by Almería County Council. The mayoress hopes that as this is a public facility Spanish persons will take up the sport as well.

An early diagnosis prevents 90% of deaths from colon cancer in both men and women, and 38,000 new cases are detected every year throughout Spain. Of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain, Andalucía is one of the communities that at present do not offer this test as a routine measure. Cancer of the colon is the 2nd highest cause of deaths from tumours. The “normal” test using a colonoscopy is expensive in time taken and money expended. The new test that examines for signs of blood in a stool sample, is very easy to carry out. Only if there is a need for more investigation is the colonoscopy test done as a follow up diagnosis.

16 Million Euros, Down to 2 Million In the building boom period of 2006 the amount obtained by town halls in the Levante region from the granting of building licences was 16.5 million euros. In 2011, the latest period for firm statistics, this had gone down by 87% to just 2 million euros. Figures for 2012 are expected to show another drop. Cuevas town hall recouped 10 million euros between 2004-2006, whilst Vera collected in another 10 million during the same period. In the case of Mojácar, they received 1.4 million euros in 2004, down to 179,000 euros in 2011. Turre received 441,000 euros in 2005, but only 26,000 in 2011. The income in Garrucha has fallen by 96%. Various town halls continue to put in their estimates for the income each year, a substantial amount of money for building licences issued. Many town halls borrow money from banks on their “expected” income, with great problems when the loans have to be repaid.

Almería province is very advanced in the supply of electricity from “green” sources, particularly from wind farms. However, the Spanish Association of Gas Companies have announced that some 25% of the natural gas entering Spain from pipelines comes into Almería province via the pipeline operated by ‘Medgaz’ from Algeria. Another 50% comes from the pipeline and installation in Cádiz. There is sufficient capacity to pipe some of the gas to France that is Colon Cancer under study for 2015. Focus on Local News continued million euro project took place at the ‘Cosentino’ headquarters in Cantoria, with the president of ‘Endesa Gas T&D’ who are to undertake the project. Apart from ‘Cosentino’ and other large marble companies benefitting from the gas line, an estimated 130,000 households will also be able to have access to gas supplies. It is anticipated that 250 direct workers will be needed and many indirect companies and labour forces as well. The work on the first phase of the project will begin in 2013 with a total length of pipeline of 134 kms. The gas will be pumped at the high pressure of 80 bars, compared to the usual 3-4 bars that are considered the safe maximum for domestic water supplies.

ETA Terrorist Proof The police in France who co-operate with Spanish police as regards the detection and arrest of “ETA” terrorists in France are using specially trained dogs that “smell” the personal body odour of suspects. This technique has been in use in France for some time, but is not yet officially recognized by all French courts, and does not exist in Spain or the UK. This test was demonstrated recently in a French court where the alleged murderers of two plain clothes Spanish police officers, opened fire on them whilst under surveillance in 2007, but in the same café by pure chance. The body odours from café seats occupied by the terrorists, and from the seats of an abandoned car, were “recorded” by specialist police dogs. In court, in three separate tests, the dogs identified the terrorists from a collection of body scents obtained at the time of the arrests. Tests like these were first used in Hungary in 1976. The French court found guilty the former chief of the “ETA” brigade known as “Ata”, and awarded a

landmark “life” sentence of 28 years, with a minimum of 22 years before parole would be considered. Another terrorist was also sentenced to 28 years for the same offence and to serve 18 years before parole would be considered. A third “ETA” terrorist, already subject to a 15 year prison term, was acquitted in this instance, as the “dog scent” was the only evidence the police could put forward.

Drink & Drugs In 2012, toxicology tests on drivers and pedestrians killed in Spain resulted in a “positive” reading from 51% of the pedestrians and 47% of the drivers. Of the 164 pedestrians killed, 84 were considered to have been affected by drink or drugs, so that they had a worse chance of either being involved in an accident or lacked quick response times in a dangerous situation. These included 126 men and 28 women. This percentage of drink or drugs ingestion has risen from 33% in 2008. 25% of drivers killed in accidents had more than one sort of handicap from alcohol & drugs; drugs and recreational medication; alcohol and recreational drugs or a combination of all three. 71% had an alcohol limit of over 1.2 grams of alcohol per litre of blood, an offence on its own under the Spanish road regulations. The majority of these alcohol related deaths were males between the ages of 20 & 40 years. Traffic police and authorities want vehicles where serious accidents are partly caused by drink or drugs to be confiscated for good.

Sarah Lark The famous German novelist Christiane Gohl who writes under the pseudonym of Sarah Lark introduced her most recent historical novel, the first of a trilogy of books set in the Caribbean, last April 12th. The novel is entitled, “La Isla de las Mil Fuentes’ in Spanish. The first book of her widely acclaimed trilogy concerning the Maoris and New Zealand, entitled “In the Land of the White Cloud” and now translated into English, was presented as well. The event took place at the Convento centre in Vera. Christiane lives in a finca near Los Gallardos and fell in love with the area on her first visit. Her other passion is horses. Information about such properties must be supplied under these regulations by the appropriate owners. Throughout Andalucía, some 400,000 properties would come under this regulation, with 24,000 new properties not at present occupied in Almería province. The lack of any consumption of electricity or water and no registered inhabitants on the ‘padrón’ (town hall register of inhabitants) are guidelines as to whether a property has been vacant for a period of more than 6 months. These proposals will not apply to second homes or holiday homes. The Junta also proposes that in cases where immediate eviction is threatened for occupiers with severe economic difficulties, multiple family members or physically challenged family members, the property would be subject to compulsory purchase for a period of 3 years. The banks will be paid 2% of the bank property valuation per year, and the currently evicted families or those threatened with proceedings would make a contribution to the compulsory purchase cost. and then a low rent. Beware! The DGT Spanish traffic police authority are sending out personalized letters to 957 licence holders in Almería province who have 6 points or less on their licences. The purpose of the letters is to remind drivers or motorcyclists that they should drive “with caution” if they do not want to lose any more points. The method of re-claiming points lost by attending refresher courses at the special centres such as the one in Huércal-Overa, is spelt out in detail. 2,415 drivers or motorcyclists have lost all their points since 2006 when the points scheme came into force. Only 139 of these are women!

Carboneras Port The port authority in Almería decided some time ago that they wanted Almería port to be a “clean”

port with container goods and other items such as wood, marble and horticultural products. The Carboneras port has been extended with two new quays and dredged to allow for the import/export of other products, not the “clean ones”. One of the quays is specifically for the coal needed at the nearby ‘Endesa’ power station, enabling much larger ships to unload. The loading area for such items as gravel and sand has been extended so that ships of up to 100,000 tonnes can berth there. Trade from this area has gone up 44% in the last year. The “dry port” that is intended to be built at Nijar will greatly add to the trade at Carboneras, when open.

Verahotel

The emblematic ‘Verahotel’ that was opened 25 years ago has gone into voluntary liquidation. The Murcian promoter, ‘Key Mare’, with a 50% stake, announced that debts could not be met. Apart from the 24 rooms and large pool, the hotel used to be the venue of many functions, works lunches or dinners, conferences, weddings and press release meetings. Unfortunately, the economic downturn has greatly reduced these events. Originally opened as “Mi Capricho”, the name was changed to Verahotel and became famous for the cuisine of chef Juan Moreno and gastronomic concourses by other famous chefs. In 2006, Juan left and opened his own Vera restaurant, another garlanded and prestigious establishment. It had been hoped that the arrival of the Vera “AVE” (high speed train) station would restore trade, but with no even approximate date for the station to be built or the trains to arrive, this hope proved fruitless.

So Now You Know... Double Decker Buses On October 25th, 1911, the â&#x20AC;&#x153;London General Omnibus Companyâ&#x20AC;? ran their last horse-drawn omnibus through the streets of London. Some people sat inside and the rest travelled on the roof by using steps if it was not raining! Since then the big red double-decker motor bus has been London's "king of the road". Today, the only open-topped buses are the special tourist buses. In the 1930s, all new buses came equipped with roofs over the upper deck, as more powerful engines meant that buses could be bigger and heavier. Today, thousands of tourists, not only in London, use double-decker buses to move slowly around a town or city, with a one-day bus pass offering an attractive way of sightseeing. Electric Vehicles Between 1832 and 1839 (the exact year is uncertain), Robert Anderson from Scotland invented the first crude electric carriage, powered by nonrechargeable cell batteries. By the 20th century, basic electric cars were commonplace, with commercial electric automobiles having the majority of the market. Over time their general-purpose commercial use became specialist role vehicles such as forklift trucks, ambulances and urban delivery vehicles, such as the iconic British milk float. For most of the 20th century, the UK was the world's largest user of electric road vehicles. Electrified trains were used for coal transport, as the motors did not use precious oxygen in the mines. Dominoes Domino games have been played by kings, presidents and all members of society for a very long time. The oldest known domino set was found in Tutankhamen's tomb, among the ruins of Thebes. Tutankhamen was the king of ancient Egypt in the 18th dynasty, 1355 BC. The set is now in King Tutankhamen's Museum in Egypt. According to historians, a Chinese set with 32 pieces existed in the year 1120 AD. The US President Lyndon B. Johnson was a devotee of dominoes and played regularly. Many different domino sets have been used for centuries in various parts of world to play a variety of domino games, with different rules and game strategy.

Keyboard Instruments The first keyboard instrument was the organ, invented in the 3rd century B.C. and was the only keyboard instrument until the 14th century. Although the original organ used buttons and levers rather than keys, it is still considered to be the first keyboard instrument. The clavichord and harpsichord were developed in the 14th century, but unlike organs were not capable of producing tones of different volumes. When the keys were pressed, a peg plucked strings inside the instrument to produce the notes. Later, the instrument maker Bartolomeo Cristofori would replace these with pivoted hammers, allowing for differing volumes depending on how hard the key was struck. Narwhals Narwhals are related to bottlenose dolphins, beluga whales, harbor porpoises, and orcas, and are found in Arctic coastal waters and rivers. They can dive to 1500m for more than 25 minutes and congregate in groups of 5 to 10 or even 20. In males, a prominent tooth grows into a swordlike, spiral tusk up to 9 feet (3 metres) long. Scientists are not certain of the tusk's purpose, but some believe it is prominent in mating rituals, perhaps used to impress females or to battle rival suitors. Females sometimes grow a small tusk of their own but it does not become very prominent. Explorers who found a narwhal tusk often brought them back claiming they were from the mythical unicorn! Cocktails A cocktail is traditionally an alcoholic mixed drink that contains three or more ingredients, one being a spirit, one sweet or sugary and one sour or bitter. The word “cocktail” is now used for almost any mixed drink that contains alcohol, including mixers and mixed shots. Additional ingredients may be sugar, honey, milk, cream, or herbs. The first publication of a bartenders' guide which included cocktail recipes was in 1862 entitled “How to Mix Drinks; or, The Bon Vivant's Companion”, by Professor Jerry Thomas. The first "cocktail party" was allegedly held by Mrs. Julius S. Walsh Jr. of St. Louis, Missouri, in May, 1917. 50 guests were invited to her home at noon on a Sunday before lunch, for “specially prepared drinks”.

Fast Food

ast month we reported on the results of a large survey in Mediterranean countries where virgin olive oil and nuts added to the “Mediterranean Diet” showed distinct health benefits. The Spanish University of Navarra coordinated the survey and results. Another major survey has now been published by the Navarra and Las Palmas Universities, relating to the daily consumption of “fast food” such as burgers and pizzas, and also the regular eating of fatty sausage products.

and lack of exercise, thought to result in this sector of society being less social, and staying at home more than normal. The survey members also smoked more than average.

This survey was spread over six years using Spanish university graduates as the test subjects because the “drop-out” rate for this class of person doing surveys is considered very low. After the first six months, 95% of the graduates were still taking part in the survey, with only minimum numbers stopping in following years. It has been known for a number of years that fatty foods lead to obesity and a higher prevalence of heart related problems. The new survey shows a hitherto not apparent factor, that of depression. The coordinator of the survey, Miguel Ángel Martinez, states that the prevalence of depression in the test subjects was 50% higher than those persons on a healthy diet and the findings were published in the international journal “Public Health Nutrition”. Harvard University in the US also monitored the survey. The central nervous system is shown not to function correctly when acidic fat is present as a result of excessive eating of fatty foods. The chemical process known as “Hydrogenation” using fat is often used in fast foods to prolong the storage life of burgers and sausages, and this is considered to be partly responsible for the increased incidence of depression and mental illnesses. 500 of the test subjects reported, or were diagnosed, as being subject to mild or severe depression, stated to be caused by the fatty products coating neurons in the brain. The World Health Organization had already linked a lack of omega 3, found in tuna, sardines and anchovies, as generating depression type illnesses.

Another result of health checks on the test subjects was that people who eat fatty foods quickly, spending a minimum amount of time eating, have more stomach problems. The digestion process is at its most efficient when the eating time is longest, with a minimum of 20-30 minutes spent having a meal. The prevalent US habit, spreading to other countries, of eating a lunchtime sandwich in front of a work computer has also been shown to generate social problems. Rapid eating means that the air drawn in quickly has a bad effect on the working of the stomach, as well as increased flatulence. Interestingly, more men considered obese woman less attractive, than women considered obese men unattractive! Chocolate, that can contain substantial calories but not so much the “dark” chocolate products, has been shown to help blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels, eaten two to three times a week in moderate quantities.

Spanish Home Energy Certificates

It has been suggested that an official period of 10 days after June 1st is the deadline to have this done. The certificates have to be prepared by an approved person such as a technical architect, a registered assessor or qualified engineer, trained for this purpose. The Spanish agency IDEA (Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía) has set up computer programs where the survey information can be entered, calculations made, and then recommendations given. As with domestic appliances the ratings will go from “A” (excellent)

The cost of the survey, borne by the seller or rental property owner, is not set out on a national scale because all properties will be different. Large villas will obviously take more time to survey than an apartment. An interesting question is what banks will do with all the properties taken back from developers, builders or owners who could not meet their loan repayment, or mortgages. One guideline on the cost gives the “average” figure at 250 euros. All certificates will have been put through the same computer program, but gathering the information is the big variable in terms of the time necessary. It is expected that some survey costs will be more competitive than others!

The Banks Shakeup

or those people with reasonably long memories, banking was always considered an “honourable” profession. The perception of clients and the general public was that bank management took prudent investment decisions to safeguard the money given to them by customers. They were also expected to make loans based on sensible expectations that the money could be repaid, both to private individuals seeking house purchase or other loans, and to businesses.

1,150 bank offices will be closed out of the present 3,000 and the number of employees will be reduced by 6,000 from the 20,500 at present. ‘CataluyaCaixa’ has to lose 1,800 staff and ‘Novacaixagalicia’ sees the most drastic changes with a loss of 2,200 employees from the present 4,700. This has to be concluded by 2017. Some banks will also be absorbed by others with a promise that clients of banks that merge will be guaranteed that their lines of credit are unaffected as well as deposits.

Since 2008 and the collapse of the ‘Lehman’ bank in the US, many banks and financial institutions have been shown to have failed these expectations. Unwise speculation in risky undertakings, and a cavalier attitude to invested money has been revealed almost world wide. The very famous cases where individuals have been responsible for enormous losses without the banks being aware that this was taking place have also been received with incredulity. This collapse in confidence and the vast amount of unwise lending has been a feature of some Spanish banks as well. A bail out fund of 37,000 million euros from the European Banking Comission has been made to the four Spanish banks that have had to be nationalized. ‘Bankia’ heads this list as being given an injection of 18,000 million euros and ‘CatalunyaCaixa’ some 9,000 million. ‘Novacaixagalacia’ has received just over 5,400 million euros and ‘Banco de Valencia’ 4,500 million. This is apart from the “toxic” debts where it is considered that there is only a small chance of recuperating the money lent. 2,500 million euros has been injected into this special entity known as “Sareb”, where bad debts mostly from the construction industry have been grouped together. Other banks may also need an injection of funds. One of the conditions for the injection of cash in the four nationalized banks is that 50% of their branches will have to close and about 10,000 employees will be laid off or offered early retirement. One ray of good news from all this is that from March 2013 an initial 6,000 properties owned by the banks have been made available for rents of 150-400 euros per month for a two year period, renewable for another 12 months. The persons able to take advantage of this are families that have been evicted or under threat of eviction since 2008 by the same banks. The present proposals are that the rent cannot be more than 30% of the net income of such families who are in receipt of less than 1,600 euros income per month. To be able to apply for these properties families must be considered socially vulnerable either because there are multiple family members, a single parent family with two or more children, families with a person with a 33% registered disability who cannot work, or made up of the unemployed who have run out of benefit. It is also proposed that properties valued at less than 100,000 euros and now part of the special toxic bank should be put up for rent as well.

The Mojácar Noise Edict

t a very turbulent and stormy council meeting lasting four hours on April 16th, the Mayoress of Mojácar and her six “PP” party councillors pushed through a twenty-two page list of anti-noise regulations. Many of the proposals designed to make Mojácar a quieter place, particularly in the summer season, appear very sensible. One of them makes it an offence if a complaint is made because domestic pets (such as dogs) are left alone on a private terrace, and cause offensive noise. The very contentious issues relate to the operation of bars and restaurants, described by opposition councillors as “draconian” or “a joke”. The April 16th meeting followed the intense criticism of the proposed regulations, due to be debated at a previous council meeting, but then taken off that agenda. At the April 16th debate, the council chamber was packed with standing room only for some of the fifty members of the public that attended the meeting. Two people were asked to leave for making comments, and one woman was forcibly ejected by the municipal police after muttering a derogatory remark. There was spontaneous applause before she was thrown out.

This proposal was withdrawn, but clients of bars and restaurants have to be seated, and not be standing up to have drinks or tapas or eat food. The most controversial regulation is that the municipal police have the authority to decide for themselves if in their opinion music is too loud, without any reference to an acoustical limit tested by portable sound meters. Licences have to be obtained for terrace areas and music, even if there is a solo entertainer without any microphone or amplification equipment who is adjudged too loud. Fines will be made from 300 to 600 euros for minor offences, 601 - 1,500 for serious offences and 1,501 - 3,000 euros for very serious offences. Bars or restaurant areas where there are a number of complaints can have all their terrace and music licences cancelled for various time periods.

The Mayoress of Mojácar, Rosa María Cano, has a majority of 7 councillors out of the total of 13, so cannot be defeated on any plan she proposes by the 6 opposition councillors who at the meeting all voted “en bloque” against the edict. The initial publication of the proposed regulations prohibited dominoes being played in public places, as being too noisy! This proposal was reported along with others in the leading Spanish national newspapers “El País”, “ABC” and “El Mundo”, “The Times” in the UK, French and German newspapers and numerous Spanish TV stations, with some coming to Mojácar to film interviews, along with internet blogs. This dominoes proposal was changed from an outright ban, to an offence if neighbours or the public complained it was too noisy, along with the playing of darts, bar football machines, and pool.

What’s On Concerts The 10th Municipal Flamenco Festival takes place in Almería city during May at the Teatro Apolo. The Flamenco singer from Seville, Aurora Vargas, performs on May 9th in a concert entitled “La mujer en la Cante”, in honour of other famous female performers. On May 16th, Sonia Miranda, accompanied by Antonio Luis, is in concert entitled “Homenaje a los Maestros”. The concerts start at 9.30pm and entrance is free. Julio Iglesias finishes his Spanish tour at Roquetas bullring on July 13th. “Golden VIP” tickets cost 295 euros, with other front of stage tickets at 150,120 & 85 euros. Standing area tickets are 50 & 80 euros, and 150 in the balcony seats. Some websites show much more expensive seats. Official ticket outlets are a variety of places in Roquetas, “El Corte Inglés” stores and online and www.ticketmaster.es. He is also at Alicante on July 6th.

The Voices of Almanzora perform “Spring into Summer”, a medley of songs from various famous artists including Abba, Queen and The Carpenters, on Friday, May 31st & Saturday, June 1st, both at 8pm and Sunday, June 3rd at 3pm, in the Pedro Gilabert Museum in Arboleas. The Music Festival of Vélez Blanco has become an internationally famous classical music event. This year is the 7th

such festival from July 21st to 27th. Entitled “Artes de Paz. Cultura y Diplomacia en la Sociedad Moderna”, famous performers and music scholars hold performance workshops in the morning, conferences open to the public in the afternoons and concerts in the evenings at the Vélez Blanco castle. 14 organizations including the EU are patronizing the event. The singer Erika Escribá-Astuburuaga has workshops and performances, Franciso Blay demonstrates the art of the sakbut, Octavio Lafourcade Señoret who is lute professor from the Madrid conservatoire the plucked string instruments, historical dance by Javier Gordillo and Francisco Andújar from Almería University and choral music by Thierry Fiévert from the Academy of Music at WatermaelBoitsfor t in Brussels. The “Dreambeach Villaricos” festival, very similar to the previous “Creamfields” events. comes to Villaricos on August 9th-10th. The lead group is “The Prodigy”, their only concert in Spain in 2013, followed by “Feed Me, Foreign Beggars, Josh Wink” and “Noisia” amongst 20 performers. What’s On Exhibitions Antonio López is a famous painter, sculptor, and last surviving member of the group of artists known as “Los Indalianos”, probably the most important group in Almería. Born in 1928, he had his first major exhibition in Madrid in 1947. The Centro de Arte Museo de Almería (CAMA) has an exhibition of his work until June 16th, entitled “Sol Sobre los Años” “El Bonsái como Expresión Artística” can be seen at the Teatro Villa in Huércal Overa until June 10th. The exhibition features bonsai trees from the collection of Juan Antonio Molina.

The photographs were selected as part of the Almería “Short Film” festival competition last December. Miscellaneous Mojácar Moors and Christians Fiesta will take place on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June, and is the 25th anniversary of this popular fiesta started 1988, to mark the 500th anniversary of the Moors and Christians truce in Mojácar in 1488. To celebrate this anniversary there is a Provincial Conference of the Fiesta and cultural events with patronage from Almería County Council starting on May 31st, including an exhibition at the Centro de Arte at the Mojácar Fuente of costumes, films,

Dave's Birthday

I've been to the patent office trying to register some of my inventions. I went to the main desk to sign in and the lady at the desk had a form that had to be filled out. She wrote down my personal information and then asked me what I had invented. I said, "A folding bottle." She said, "OK, what do you call it...?" "A Fottle," I replied. "What else do you have?" she asked. "A folding carton." "And, what do you call it...?" "A Farton." She snickered, saying, "Those are silly names for products and one of them even sounds kind of crude." I was so upset by her comment that I grabbed the form and left the office without even telling her about my folding bucket.

Dave works hard and spends most evenings bowling or playing basketball at the gym. His wife thinks he is pushing himself too hard, so for his birthday she takes him to a local strip club. The doorman at the club greets them and says, "Hey, Dave! How ya doin?" His wife is puzzled and asks if he's been to this club before. "Oh no," says Dave. "He's on my bowling team."

The Mail Man One Monday morning a mailman is walking the neighborhood on his usual route. As he approaches one of the homes he noticed that both cars were in the driveway. His walk was cut short by Bob, the homeowner, coming out with a load of empty liquor bottles. "Wow Bob, looks like you guys had one hell of a party last night!" the mailman comments. Bob, in obvious pain replies, "Actually we had it Saturday night. This is the first I have felt like moving since 4:00 Sunday morning. We had about fifteen couples from around the neighborhood over for a party and it got a bit wild. Hell, we got so drunk around midnight that we started playing Who Am I?" The mailman thinks a moment and says, "How do you play that?" "Well, all the guys go in the bedroom and we come out one at a time with a sheet covering us, with only our privates showing through a hole in the sheet. Then the women try to guess who it is." The mailman laughs and says, "Damn, I'm sorry I missed that." "Probably a good thing you did," Bob responds. "Your name came up four or five times."

When they are seated, a waitress asks Dave if he'd like his usual and brings over a Budweiser. His wife is becoming increasingly uncomfortable and says, "How did she know that you drink Budweiser?" "I recognize her, she's the waitress from the golf club. I always have a Bud at the end of the first nine, honey. A stripper then comes over to their table, throws her arms around Dave, starts to rub herself all over him and says, "Hi Davey. Want your usual table dance, sweetie?" Dave's wife, now furious, grabs her purse and storms out of the club. Dave follows and spots her getting into a cab. Before she can slam the door, he jumps in beside her. Dave tries desperately to explain how the stripper must have mistaken him for someone else, but his wife is having none of it. She is screaming at him at the top of her lungs, calling him every four-letter word in the book. The cabbie turns around and says, "Geez Dave, you picked up a real bitch this time."

The Contract Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House. One is from Chicago, another is from Tennessee, and the third is from Minnesota. All three go with a White House official to examine the fence. The Minnesota contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. "Well," he says, "I figure the job will run about $900 -- $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me." The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, "I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me." The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$2,700." The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?" The Chicago contractor whispers back, "$1,000 for me, $1,000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence." Done!" replies the government official.

In the letter she explained that she had slept with two guys while he had been gone and she wanted to break up with him. To add injury to the insult, she said she wanted back the picture of herself that she had given him. So the Marine did what any squared-away Marine would do. He went around to his buddies and collected all the unwanted photos of women he could find. In all, he got more than 25 pictures of various women (some with clothes and some without). He then mailed them to his now-former girlfriend with the following note: "I don't remember which one you are. Please remove your picture and send the rest back."

Toy Boy Fred and Ethel had been married for 20 years, but Ethel had finally got sick and tired of one of Fred's strange habits. Every time they made love, Fred insisted on turning off the lights. After 20 years Ethel felt this was ridiculous, and figured she would break him out of this crazy habit. So one night, while they were in the middle of a wild, screaming, romantic session, she turned on the lights. She looked down and saw Fred was using a battery-operated pleasure device -- a vibrator!
