A Decisive Month

here are two key dates this month and June 23rd when the EU referendum takes place has the most relevance for Brits in Spain. In the UK, party politics has entering the “Brexit” debate to some extent but the referendum is intended to reflect the views of the general population, including ex-pats who have left the UK within the last fifteen years. It is difficult to decide from all the conflicting claims from politicians, financial institutions, the Confederation of British Industry, the Central European Bank, and even Barak Obama, what is the right way to vote but ex-pats have special considerations to take into account. It would seem prudent to suggest that people of a particular nationality (in this case Brits) who live in an EU member state (in this case Spain) will be better off if they themselves are still EU citizens. The right to have free movement between member states, freedom to work on the same basis as Spaniards, pay into the Social Security system and receive pensions, enjoy state heath care in most cases, emergency health care in other EU states, access to unemployment benefits, and be the holder of EU passports are matters that should be maintained without any complicated negotiations. There are no special hurdles to be overcome if UK ex-pats wish to buy property or start a business here at present. The Spanish Government are trying to avoid a potential fine of two billion Euros probably levied by an EU tribunal in July for not reaching 2015 deficit targets. There is no suggestion at all that Spain should consider leaving the EU however. UK ex-pats in Spain can currently vote in municipal elections, stand as councillors or mayor/mayoress and in this area there are several UK ex-pats that are local councillors and perform a valuable contribution. There is one major difference in Spain between Spaniards and residents of other countries and this is the right to vote in General Elections. New ones take place on Sunday June

26th that is seven months and three days since the last General Elections on December 20thin 2015. If there is no government formed from what will almost certainly have to be a coalition of at least two of the four political parties this will be very bad news. July 19th is the key date when a government should have been formed and voted in by MPs. The outcome is very uncertain.

The saga of Len & Helen Prior who have received no compensation for the loss of their villa in Vera that was demolished in 2008 continues. We comment on this sad state of affairs in an article. The elaborate Moors and Christians event that draws large crowds takes place in Mojácar from Friday, June 10th until Sunday, June 12th. There are a host of events but the major procession takes place from early evening on the Sunday. If you have never seen this procession you should do! See our 'What's On' section for more details. Vera are holding their third Moors and Christians events at the same time. June 19th is UK Father's Day followed by beach events on the night of the eve of the San Juan (St. John) fiesta on June 24th, after the summer solstice on June 21st. On this day, St. John the Baptist is supposed to have been born. Mojácar, Garrucha, San Juan de los Terreros, Águilas, and Villaricos have beach bonfires on the 23rd. There are no national “red” fiesta dates in June or July but August 15th is a national fiesta.

Focus on Local News Some Changes? Faced with new General Elections in Spain on June 26th as no coalition between any of the four main political parties resulted in a majority government following the elections last December, how will this change this time? This is the main question that is very difficult to answer. Surveys carried out appear to show that the PP (roughly Conservative) party, still a “government in function” from before the December elections, will lose some seats in parliament and the PSOE (roughly a labour party) will have almost exactly the same number. The new Ciudadanos party (centre right) will substantially gain MPs, the new Podemos (far left party) will lose several, and the IU Izguierda Unida (left wing party) will show gains. Podemos and IU Izquierda have subsequently formed a coalition to fight under one banner. These results are interpreted as showing that the PP party is considered to have not been very helpful in trying to form some coalition, and the Podemos party is seen as particularly intransigent. The Ciudadanos party with a charismatic leader formed an alliance with the PSOE party on the basis of 200 proposals that were agreed to and this is seen as being very constructive, but with only 130 MPs between them they didn't have a majority. There are 350 MPs in the Spanish parliament so any coalition of any of the parties has to have a minimum of 176 MPs. Electioneering will start on June 10th -24th and the date when a new government has been formed and is approved in parliament is July 19th. In theory. The Mojácar Paseo Just as we were going to press the new paseo (promenade) at Mojácar beach has been opened by Rosa María Cano, the mayoress, and various dignitaries. This runs from the “stables” roundabout where the road to the La Parata starts and finishes at the Red Cross centre passing the Pueblo Indalo Apartment hotel on the way. This has cost the Mojácar ratepayers almost 1 million Euros but has transformed this stretch of the coast line and would seem to be a very useful additional facility

to attract tourists. In theory, the promenade will eventually be extended to the Parque Comercial centre. From the Red Cross end, the promenade now continues to the Hotel Indalo without any breaks.

Surfing Onwards Twelve year old Osaïa Reding from Mojácar was proclaimed junior freestyle kitesurf champion of Spain in the recent tournament “La Manga Experience” where she won a gold medal, following being fifth in the world championship held in France. Once again, she was the youngest in the competition and has a regular podium position, this time on the top step, with more than 85 competitors. Mojácar Town Hall sponsors her, and her father Sebastien Reding managed third place in the senior category at La Manga. Sebastien, aged 41 was the oldest competitor. Cut Off! Any consumer of electricity or water can expect to be cut off if they stop paying their bills unless this is a result of extreme financial hardship from very poor families where some aid may be forthcoming. In this region, 'Galasa' supply the vast majority of water and 'Endesa' electricity. In the middle of May, 'Endesa' cut off the electricity supply to various 'Galasa' offices including Vera for non-payment of bills that are said to amount to 1.5 million Euros! A noisy generator was installed at the Vera office as a result. Critics say that having electricity cut off at offices is one thing but there are a multitude of pumps powered by electricity that are needed for the supply of water

Focus on Local News to dwellings and businesses. 'Galasa' is a private company and 25 town halls in the Levante area have a stake with the major shareholder at 51% being the Diputacíon de Almería (County council) and total losses are around 37.6 million Euros that have been accumulating over many years. The company is trying to get an agreement to change their statutes, increase the amount they charge customers, and change the agreements they have with town halls but there is a lot of opposition. Both Vera and Garrucha councils amongst others have both voted to refute any increases in cost or changes. It has now been agreed that no changes will take place until after the General Elections. A Substantial “U” Turn! In 2007, plans were unveiled for a state of the art children’s and maternity hospital in Almería city to be part of the Torrecárdenas hospital complex on an adjoining site. 21 companies put in bids for the 27 million Euros project and the work was awarded in 2010 to a group of companies who banded together under the umbrella name of 'Acciona Infraestructuras – Construcciones Tejera'. Work started in 2011 and concrete bases were laid, but then the work was stopped a few months later for lack of funds. It may well start up again because the company is going to court over the cancellation and this might cost the Andalucían Health Authority at least four million Euros. If the company win and the contract is null and void a new round of negotiations with interested companies would have to take place that would result in considerable delays in re-starting the work. The Health Authority are in talks with the construction company to see if a new start to the work can be agreed and the court case scrubbed. The original building time was stated to be 30 months and the unit would occupy a total of 24,000 sq mts. 101 individual rooms were to be built for children, 88 rooms related to gynaecology and 18 birth areas and an accident and emergency unit. The completed building will directly link to the main hospital.

Cheaper Bottled Gas On May 17th the cost of a standard bottle of butane gas was reduced to 11 Euros and 85 céntimos that is 32% less than the 17 Euros that these bottles cost in March 2015. 34% of the 18 million households in Spain still use this type of gas but 41% are now connected to natural gas supplies. Bottled gas prices are adjusted every two months.

Noisy Youngsters & Dogs Mojácar town hall are putting up signs at bus stops and other places to remind young people that noise is a nuisance for people of all ages, and excrement from dogs is a health risk apart from being very unpleasant for tourists and residents. Both sets of signs are in Spanish and English. A Lot of Money Amancio Ortega, the private owner of the 'Zara' clothes chain, is the richest man in Spain and he has set up a charitable foundation. Last October they announced a grant of 17 million Euros for improved breast cancer detection equipment in Galicia They have now signed an agreement with the Andalucía Health Department to pump in 40 million Euros for the purchase and installation of

Focus on Local News 25 linear acceleration, state of the art, cancer treatment machines and three of these will come to the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city. The provision of this equipment will be completed by 2019 and will increase the annual sessions currently available from existing equipment in Andalucía by 225,000. Some older equipment will be replaced and also modifications made to others. The first machine planned for Torrecárdenas in 2017 will require an underground bunker to be built and another machine will be installed in an existing area. Marta Ortega, the daughter of the 'Zara' owner, came to Seville to sign the agreement.

During 2015 there were 23 deaths on roads in the province from 20 major accidents and 15 were on secondary roads. We highlight new regulations and road modifications that are being put in place by the traffic police in another local news item. It is intended these are in place before the summer months. 'Movistar' Charges The Spanish mobile company 'Movistar', part of the 'Telefónica' group, are levying charges that were introduced on May 18th where mobile phone users have exceeded their contract terms regarding the downloading of data from the internet. This could amount to a maximum of 15 Euros per month in some cases from the 12 schemes they operate. Up to now, heavy users of the internet in excess of their contract amount have had their access speed reduced with no extra charge. Movistar say that mobile phone users have been notified on their billing details of these changes. Users who wish to keep the system of having their internet speed reduced without additional cost if they go over the allowance should ring the free number 223528 for more information and to register, and they can change their limit if they wish to every month. SMS messages will be sent to clients when they are about to exceed their contracted access to the internet. Telefónica declared an income of 979 million Euros in the first quarter this year from voice, internet, and television access, that is 26% up from previous levels and they attracted an extra 9% of customers. Rented Property Registration The new regulations where rented properties of short duration have to be registered came into force on May 11th. Registration is free and every property is given a code number. Properties have to comply with various criteria including airconditioning in the summer months and heating

in the winter, minimum standards of furnishings, cleaning, complaint books, and the registration of passport number for all renters. This latter requirement is stated to be for increased security. Registration is supposed to be done as soon as possible and 1,350 enquiries as to the exact procedure were received prior to May 11th. It is considered that there are “probably” between 3,000-4,000 properties rented out in Almería province. Registered property owners have a grace period of 12 months to install required facilities that do not exist at present. Properties rented free for friends and family only, and for periods of more than two months do not have to register. Persons renting out multiple properties have existing regulations in place as do rural properties. Town halls are initially dealing with the registration but eventually properties will be inspected by the Junta de Andalucía and there are large fines for non-registration. Roadworks in Garrucha Two new roundabouts have now been put in action on the surface where the tunnel access for lorries is now complete. Other improvements have been made with a total cost of 7 million Euros. The 247 metre “false tunnel” was started again in 2014 when EU funding was obtained as access to the port was considered a priority project. 'Facebook' Ban Rodrigo Valero Gonzalez from Turre is a noted photographer and visual artist who has found he has problems with 'Facebook'. He took side-profile nude photographs of a friend who is heavily pregnant that he considers are very artistic, intended to be a homage to women and life, and with her full permission featured two of them on his 'Facebook' page gallery. Without any prior warning his page was blocked from any access for several days and the photographs removed. Rodrigo complains that on many 'Facebook' sites there are photographic images of maltreated children, animals, and provocative nudes. Other photographers and artists have sprung into action in protest at his page being blocked and Rodrigo says that at the end of the day these photographs have been published in the press to a much wider audience of thousands more than he would have reached himself. Wolff. He has published three photo-journalism books that have been critically acclaimed and his photographs have featured in many exhibitions locally and nationally. The local Spanish newspaper 'IDEAL' consequently printed one of his photographs of the nude pregnant woman that took up almost a full page. This is the second time that 'Facebook' have censured one of his photographs of a nude and there was an outcry on that occasion.

2016 'Dreambeach' Line-Up The Cuevas 'Dreambeach' music festival takes place on August 11th-14th. The people appearing have now been confirmed and additional artistes are the DJ's Audion, Luciano, Dirtphonics, Joel Mull, and DuArt. Cuartero, Christian Wünsch, DJ Nuke, Gelab, Ávaro Sánchez, Reeko, Raúl Pachero, and Heels to Kill will be there. The US Curtis 50 Cent Jackson rapper who has sold 30 million albums worldwide is making his only appearance in Spain. “Caso Costurero” The large court case relating to the alleged planning offences at Zurgena that were investigated by police under the code name “Caso Costurero” in 2007 opened in a court in Almería city on May 10th. Focus on Local News of people accused that total 25 and have about 20 lawyers between them, the hearing was held in a large room normally used for weddings. A former municipal architect and three members of a construction company had pleaded guilty to the charges and the Spanish 'Fiscalia' (Crown Prosecution) reduced their requests for the length of prison terms and agreed fines, a ban on carrying out their activities, and prison terms that were less than 24 months so suspended ones. Lawyers for the ex-mayor and ex-councillor, Cándido Trabalón, and ex-councillor for urban development, Manuel Tijeras, argued that telephone conversations that were recorded by the police were not admissible and the raid on the town hall where a large number of documents were seized was not carried out correctly. The prosecution are asking for a total of 180 years in prison for Cándido Trabalón and 178 for Manuel Tijeras who is also accused of accepting unspecified amounts of money and a car valued at 31,000 Euros from one of the construction companies involved. Councillors in office from 2003-2011 are also in court for approving planning applications that are alleged to be illegal. An EU Fine Spain has not achieved their target deficit figures for 2015 and the relevant ones for both 2016 & 2017 look likely to be downgraded. Unemployment, avoidance of taxes, and the black economy is stated to be partly responsible. The EU is proposing to fine Spain for not achieving these targets so the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy (in function until there is a new Spanish government) has written a letter to Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the EU commission to try to stop this. He is pointing out the achievements made in the last few years to combat the deficit and asking for an extended period of 12 months to achieve the EU targets. The lack of a Spanish Government since last December, with new General Elections on June 26th is also a reason why the economy is suffering. The proposed fine (unless it is squashed) will be approved on June 17th and an

amount of two billion Euros is being suggested that will be announced on July 12th. “Abusive” Mortgage Terms Banks in Spain have been castigated for including in their mortgage terms a clause that meant there was a minimum amount of interest clients had to pay, irrespective of the 'Euribor' rate that has been falling steadily (and is now negative) added to a low bank interest rate. These clauses are known as “Las Cláusulas Suelos” (Floor Rates) and in May 2013, a high court ruled that these were abusive if hidden in the small print. Since then various banks have individually been told they have to make refunds, but the banks are saying that any rebate only applies from the date there was a court judgement against them. In the case of Banco Popular, they only intend to make rebates from December 2015. A new court judgement in Madrid is that all the banks and financial institutions who have used these clauses have to pay this money back from May 2013. Individual banks are appealing this latest ruling so there will be further delays in paying back excess interest. The other consideration is that an EU tribunal will rule on these clauses on July 12th. It is thought that they may rule that the excess interest has to be paid not just from May 2013 but from when the mortgage was first taken out. This would be extremely good for clients with this type of clause in their mortgages, but really bad news for the banks! Many people have been evicted from their homes because they couldn't pay back amounts owing, and there have very regrettably been several suicides. One of the worst (if there is a worst one) was a person aged 32 who had fallen into arrears that only amounted to 18,000 Euros. Traffic Fines Figures in the ten year period from 2005 - 2015 show that 388,000 fines have been given to motorists in Almería province for various traffic infractions. This works out as an average of 107 per day with average fines of 219 Euros. This should have resulted in a total of 85 million Euros

Focus on Local News being paid over, but in reality only 38 million has been paid and 92,500 fines totalling 47 million Euros are still unpaid. Despite there being a discount of 50% off any fine if paid within a 20 day period the average time for a fine to be paid in Almería province is 179 days. This is better than Seville (185 days), Ceuta (337 days) and Melilla (402 days)! 80% of fines relate to speeding from fixed and mobile radar cameras in Almería province and drivers speeding on the A-7 motorway near El Ejido resulted in nearly 1,900 fines in 2015, an average of five per day. 22,000 fines in the last ten years are from drink or drug offences and 40% of drivers killed on the roads in 2014 were over one or both of these limits. 17,000 drivers using mobile phones or other devices received fines, and in 2016, special cameras will monitor this along with the use of seat belts as drivers not using seatbelts or not using child seats were the third highest category for fines. 3,000 drivers had no licence or vehicle paperwork so their vehicles were towed away. 1,000 drivers were fined for driving too close to the vehicle in front, and during the ten year period 142 pedestrians were fined an average of 30 Euros for offences such as jay walking. New regulations are that any pedestrian involved in a traffic accident will be tested for alcohol or drug levels as well as the drivers, and can be fined if over the respective limits. The Western Film Festival The 6th Tabernas Western Film Festival will take place from October 6th-9th. This festival that operates in conjunction with the Fort Bravo and Mini Hollywood centres is considered very important. Film makers are continuing to choose Almería province as the ideal place to film. The new director, Juan Francisco Viruega, is a noted film maker and wants the festival to be an international celebration of Western filming. As in other years, a variety of feature length or short films will be screened for the general public. Submissions of new Western short films will be judged by a panel of professionals who will award prizes. The annual Almería city Short Film Festival

attracts entries from all over the world and is considered a prestigious event. Cheaper Elections? The General Elections in Spain last December 20th cost the taxpayer 150 million Euros. The political parties are trying to reach an agreement that will reduce these costs for the June 26th new elections, but just as there has been no consensus to form a government there is hardly any agreement! There are proposals that posters and placards will be reduced and the PSOE party are saying that they will eliminate all of theirs. Smaller parties say they need the exposure. The PP and PSOE parties want to continue with their campaigns by mail, but Ciudadanos and Podemos say that if there was only one envelope sent out with publicity from all the parties included this would save 20-30 million Euros. The PP party say this is unworkable! New discussions will continue.

One Year On It is now a year since María Luisa Pérez, a councillor in Mojácar, was appointed to act as a contact for people who do not speak sufficient Spanish to enable them to have full access to town hall procedure and other matters such as assistance in the home where required. Of the official numbers of residents on the “padrón” as of January 1st this year that total 6,838 this includes 3,486 non-Spanish residents with the majority of them UK ex-pats. 1,500 calls for assistance during the year have been received. Classes in Spanish for residents usually have a waiting list because of the demand.

Focus on Local News Cuevas Church Churchgoers in Cuevas are collecting signatures to press for repair work to be carried out at the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación parish church. They want Cuevas town hall, the cultural department of the Junta de Andalucía and the Bishop of Almería to take action. Major work is necessary to repair the roof, walls, rain damage, and other problems. Emergency repairs were carried out in 2012 but comprehensive repairs that were authorized in 2005 have never started. The church is considered the most important one in Almería province apart from the cathedral in Almería city and it was declared a National Historic Monument in 1983. An Arab mesquita or mosque existed on the site before the building was dedicated on May 26th 1505 by the Archbishop of Seville. 'TTIP' The acronym TTIP stands for “Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership” and is an ambitious plan to form economic links between the EU and the US. Talks started in 2013 and Barak Obama is hoping that before he leaves office as President an agreement will have been hammered out. This project would create a free market trading area with 820 million people whose countries generate 60% of the Gross National Product worldwide. The head of the EU negotiating team is the Spaniard Ignacio García Bercero. Some economists consider that the agreement would create jobs in Spain of perhaps 143,000 (one of the fairly pessimistic figures) or 334,000 if the Spanish Government are right over the first five years. The Spanish Gross National Product (PIB) is stated to potentially rise by 0.3% initially and reach 6.6 % over ten years. Spanish exports are stated to increase from about 1% to 8%. Other economists think these suggested figures are too ambitious. One result of this agreement would be that EU companies including Spanish ones could bid for work in the US on a level footing with US companies. Critics say that a relaxation in labour laws in the EU would be necessary to harmonize

with the US. A new round of talks is taking place in Brussels to see if an agreement can be reached. If the UK leaves the EU they would be excluded from any future group agreement.

Butterflies From the end of April, a unique zoological park devoted solely to butterflies, 'Butterfly Pavillion Níjar', has opened to the general public. They have 400 exotic butterflies from 16 distinct species and visitors can see these in their various states of growth in a garden area of 500 sq mts. It is the brainchild of two women and guided tours are available in Spanish, French, and English. The centre also carries out research into butterflies and their biological cycle as butterflies are falling off in numbers worldwide. Apart from being able to see the amazing colours of the butterflies it is hoped that visitors will understand the importance of butterflies in the natural environment. The centre is in the Hualix area of Níjar and travelling on the A-7 motorway from the Murcia direction the turn off is Salida 481 Níjar-Lucainena and at the signpost Níjar Oeste turn left and it is then 500 metres. Hours from now to the end of October or mid November depending on weather conditions are from 10am to an hour and a half before sunset when the butterflies decide it is time to sleep! After the tour visitors can wander around the garden. 'FreedomPop' The giant company 'Google' has announced that it will connect people in remote or rural areas to the internet through their “Project Loon” that uses giant balloons in 2017 and 'Facebook' say that they intend to offer coverage from drones in areas where there has been a natural disaster. Meanwhile, 'FreedomPop', a very large company founded in the US in 2011 is coming to Spain between now and the summer months. They will provide a “Free 300” service giving 300 minutes of calls, 300 megabytes of 4G data, and 300 SMS messages entirely free per month. If this free amount is exceeded, charges apply per category but they claim this is still at a cheap rate. Roaming charges in 21 countries will be free and an unlimited use of WhatsApp does not affect the free 300 megabytes. Since being introduced in the UK last September they claim they have 100,000 clients and within two years plan to attract 1 million clients in Spain. Users have to buy a 'FreedomPop' SIM card that costs approximately 5 Euros of the types that go in a normal mobile phone, tablet, or 'smartphone'. The user then downloads the 'FreedomPop' app for Android or iOS systems from Google Play or Apple Store. They plan to introduce an economically priced mobile phone in conjunction with 'Intel'. Record Profits Almería city heads the list of the most profitable ones in 2015 relating to hotel income. Figures show that 1.2 million tourists came here and room income went up 24% and employment in this sector went up 12%. The association Exceltur (Alianza para la Excelencia Turística) collate the figures throughout Spain and monitor hotel

occupancy and other details in 53 tourist destinations. The 12% increase in staff works out as being 2,384 employees and the average daily amount spent on rooms was 41 Euros. Between 2008 and 2015 net profit is calculated to have gone up in Almería city by 31% , considerably higher than Cádiz (19%), Málaga (18%) and Barcelona (14%). Roquetas and Mojácar have also benefited from an increase in tourists staying in hotels and in the case of Mojácar this is calculated as being up 8% on 2014, an increase in employment of 1,221 people and an average daily income for rooms of 40 Euros Unjustified Expenses The ex-major and ex-councillor of Albox, Rogelio Mena, who was forced to stand down after he lost an appeal is being investigated for expenses he ran up in 2013-2014. Some of his “official” journeys to Madrid and Burgos are alleged to have been undertaken when he went to UGT (General Workers Union) events as he is a member of this union. Apart from these journeys, the 'Fiscalia' (Spanish crown prosecution services) and a judge in Huércal-Overa are investigating an alleged lack of justification for claiming very high expenses some of which they allege are a misuse of public funds. They say that Rogelia Mena claimed general expenses in July 2014 of 1,788 Euros and food and drink bills of 1,230 Euros. In the whole of 2013 he was paid expenses he submitted amounting to 466,500 Euros and 472,000 Euros in 2014. It is alleged that many expenses claimed related to weekends or fiesta days. It is also claimed that he made 84 journeys to Madrid and Seville in 10 months and the town hall paid out for all these expenses. Juan Pedro Peréz, leader of the PP party in opposition in Albox is now claiming that in 2015 in the months leading up to his dismissal and before his unsuccessful appeal Rogelio Mena claimed 13,000 Euros and one bill from a restaurant in Almería city that appears to relate to three people was for 138 Euros including a steak that cost 48 Euros. Focus on Local News court investigations and is asking the mayoress of Albox, Sonia Cerdán, who became mayoress when Rogelio Mena was forced to stand down, to back up the claim that in 2015 there was a similar misuse of public funds at the expense of Albox residents. An EU Penalty The EU Commission has told Spain that on several occasions they have asked that the way mortgages are dealt with when there has been an eviction is changed. They are also asking for more consumer protection regarding the “floor rates” that banks put in their mortgage terms that compelled lenders to pay an artificial interest rate. (They are to rule in July when the refunds have to start from, and whether it is from May 2013 when a Spanish court ruled these clauses “abusive” or from the date mortgages were taken out). The commission has given Spain two months to comply with EU regulations that they say apply from 1993. If this does not take place Spain may be fined and the fine would be determined by the Justice Tribunal of the EU. They state that Spain has to “guarantee that consumers are fully protected”. Disabled Rail Travellers The Spanish Minister of Transport has promised that by next September the really old 'Talgo 4' trains that serve the line Almería to Madrid will be replaced by the 'Talgo 6' trains that are still very old. 200 people recently demonstrated in front of the old Almería station to complain that the “new” trains are not equipped for disabled passengers as there are no anchor points for wheelchairs that is a problem at present. They want Ana Pastor, the current Minister for Transport, to compel the train operator 'RENFE' to fit these and also adapt toilet access. They say that there are thousands of people in Almería province who are excluded from rail travel as they have disabilities, apart from the elderly who are not registered as being handicapped. They say that it is offensive that this sector of society have to be helped into normal seats or call on railway

staff to help them when they want to use the loo. This is a general problem on short and medium distance trains in Spain and the only non-electrically propelled train to cater for handicapped persons is a hybrid dual-track train, the 'Talgo 7', that was built to cater for this class of person. A spokesperson at the demonstration stated that the lack of facilities was against EU law and Spain only has until 2017 to comply. Within a few days the Spanish Secretary of State for Infrastructure announced that the 'Talgo 6' would be wheelchair friendly by 2017, but not before. A Large Hoard Seville has a large number of Roman sites and documentation as to their history and use. It is not uncommon for excavation work to throw up various discoveries. Work to install new electricity supply cables in the city centre has revealed the existence of 19 complete or broken Roman amphorae packed with almost 600 kilos of Roman coins from the 3rd and 4th centuries A.D. They were found in a chamber just 1 metre below the surface. Ana Navarro who is the director of the Seville Museum of Archaeology considers the discovery is one of the most important in Spain and also in the world. The coins are in mint condition and had not been put in general circulation. They may well have been in the custody of an important Roman figure who was responsible for the issuing of money in Imperial Roman times. Some of the large jars have been X-rayed but not yet been fully opened as the examination and classification of the coins will take a long time. Apart from their unique historical importance the present value of the coins will be several million Euros. Record Exports The exportation of natural stone from Almería province went up 42% this January and February compared to 2015. Figures for following months although not all worked out are expected to show similar increases. Sales were up 17 million Euros to a grand total of 57 million Euros. Throughout

Focus on Local News Andalucía as a whole, exports went up 86 million Euros to 322 million. Exports from Almería province of 22 million Euros went to the US, 8 million to the UK, 2.5 million to Australia and 2 million to Germany. There are now 250 natural stone companies in Andalucía and the larger ones that make up 50% exported stone valued at 320 million Euros in 2015. Low Wages if in Work A report has been presented regarding unemployment in Spain particularly regarding young people. The unemployment rate is given as 45% for this sector and highlights low wages for those with jobs. It states that just less than half of young people with work are paid less than 1,000 Euros a month for a working week of eight hours per day. Just over half are only paid between 1,000-1,500 Euros. The remaining 8% are paid more than 1,500 Euros. Women are worse paid than men and often have two jobs to try and make ends meet. Throughout Spain in general relating to people in work of any age group, engineers were the highest paid followed by dentists and then directors of computer related activities. More Motorists In areas of Spain where it is considered that the economic crisis is receding there has been a marked increase in motorists. Because of this the 'DGT' (Spanish Traffic Authority) are proposing more safety features on roads. Since January 1st to the end of April throughout Spain there were 295 traffic accidents and 349 deaths, up fifteen on the same period in 2015. 3,000 kms of roads that are considered particularly dangerous will have “noise” strips installed that will not be across the road but down each lane including some hard shoulders. These are designed to stop vehicles going off the road or frontal collisions where a lane change has taken place on the wrong side of the road. The use of these bands on various roads in the US is considered to have reduced frontal collisions by 30% and deaths by 67%. The budget

for this work that they hope to complete within five months is five million Euros out of a grand total of seven million Euros. Another 1,000 kms of roads will have continuous double lines put down where there is a concentration of accidents. Illuminated signs will warn of the presence and danger of various pedestrian crossings. A total of 100 of these will be installed to try to cut down on the 113 pedestrians killed in 2015.The DGT helicopters with or without the 'Pegasus' radar detectors will have a much greater presence on motorways and toll roads as a deterrent to speeding and also enforce minimum distances between vehicles to avoid multiple collisions. On motorways and major roads there were 54 deaths from multiple collisions in 2015 as opposed to only 44 in 2014.

The Vélez-Blanco Patio The mayor of Vélez-Blanco, Antonio Cabrera, thinks that work on the reproduction “Patio de Honor” will start later this year. A meeting of all interested parties took place on May 5th. The Association of Andalucian Marble Companies (AEMA) and the Centre for Advanced Stone Technology (CTAP) are working with marble companies in Macael, and a grant of 1.13 million Euros has been made available. The Delegation of Culture is co-ordinating the work with the technical

Focus on Local News processes. The Vélez Blanco castle was declared to be of General Cultural Interest in 1985 and the Junta de Andalucía bought it in 2005. The castle and fortress was the residence in the 16th century of the Fajardo family who commissioned the 'Patio de Honor' screen and associated sculptures from Italian artisans who used Macael marble. It divided the military area from the family part. A French art dealer acquired the complete patio in 1904 and then sold it to the US millionaire George Blumenthal who donated it to the New York Metropolitan Museum on his death where it was re-erected and can be seen today. A Spanish 3D imaging company took comprehensive scans of the whole patio a couple of years ago when the museum was shut to the general public and these images will be used for the replica. Marble experts from Macael have given the museum advice on the maintenance necessary. The artistic merit of the patio is considered to be one of the most important in the world. More Action “Soon”? Prior to the May municipal elections last year and immediately before the General Elections on December 20th the Spanish Ministry of Transport promised that work on the 12km stretch of the 'AVE' (High Speed Train) from Pulpí to Cuevas would start “soon”. Cynics say these announcements were merely politically motivated. Apart from the contract for the construction work being awarded to the company 'SACYR' nothing else has happened since. Delays have been blamed on the tortoises that have a natural habitat on an area where the line will be built, but these are supposed to have now been moved. The other reason for the delay is that the compulsory purchase of land affected has not taken place. Officials came to Pulpí on May 16th & 18th and Cuevas on May 23rd and 26th where landowners were invited to come and register their ownership of the 244 parcels of land that have to be bought. Following this the occupation of the land can go ahead when the rail authority 'ADIF' become the owners. This 12 km stretch is the only one ready for work to start

and there are another 15 stretches between Murcia city and Almería city that need building. As there are new General Elections in Spain on June 26th there may well be another announcement that coincides with this date that work will start “soon”. It is just possible that the next stretch from Cuevas to the outskirts of Vera where there is supposed to be a station will have a promise of some action.

Body Products The very large company 'Castillo de Tabernas' started producing high grade olive oil 15 years ago and have become market leaders. They recently unveiled a new range called “0.1 Massage by Castillo de Tabernas” that has been developed over the last six years. They have five products aimed at therapeutic massage, relaxation, normal skin care, and the treatment of existing skin problems. The “0.1” refers to the level of acid in these products that is therefore almost nonexistent. One product is for Mother and baby massage, and another one is called “Sensuality Massage”. Production of virgin olive oil in Almería province has rapidly grown to 13,000 tonnes and in 2015 this had a value of 20 million Euros with 13 million destined for export. The new product is aimed at opening up new markets in countries where virgin olive oil is not used for food.

The Left Hand and the Right Hand

n April 24th, the Minister for Transport (in function), Ana Pastor, came to Almería to open a new quay at the port and the pressure groups trying to solve the rail transport system problems had a meeting with her. They wanted to know what she was doing to improve existing rail links with Seville where a return journey recently took 11 hours and 33 minutes, the very poor rail service to Madrid, and work on the 'AVE' (High Speed train). Ana Pastor made various soothing replies. The problem with the line to Seville is a contract dispute over the price of the 'AVE' electrification work near Granada and the contractors have stopped work. Regarding the trains that go to Madrid, the current 'Talgo 4' trains that date back to the 1980s, will be replaced by the 'Talgo 6' trains made in the 1990s from next September. She promised a technical study to improve the existing speed limits that in many cases are only 30km/hr.

Almanzora Levante, are campaigning for a major goods centre at Pulpí and have proposed they will come up with between 40-50 million Euros to build this. Ana Pastor

The big question was regarding the work for the 'AVE' from Murcia to Almería city and Ana Pastor replied that some of the 15 sections where nothing has so far happened were in an advanced stage of studies being completed and made ready to be put out to tender. Asked about the 12km stretch from Pulpí to Cuevas she replied that in a few days the tortoises that occupy some of the land where the train will go would be rehoused and after that there is only the problem that expropriations of land needed completing. She hoped this would all be dealt with within a few weeks and work could start.

Ana Pastor was accompanied by Julio GómezPomar Secretary of State for Infrastructure (in function) and the Operations Director of 'RENFE' (the Spanish rail company) Berta Barrera. They casually announced, in reply to a question, that there was no plan for goods to be carried on the Murcia-Almería line as carrying goods by rail was “not competitive”. This caused a predictable outcry! 'Ferrmed', a pressure group for the whole Mediterranean Corridor train link, described this as ridiculous. They stated that the Murcia-Almería line was designed with a maximum gradient for goods trains to be used, and if only passenger trains used it the gradient could be twice as much and so the enormously expensive twin tunnels at Sorbas might not have been needed! Port Rail Almanzora stated that if the line wasn't going to carry goods it would not be viable.

After these soothing comments there was a bombshell! The whole conception of the 'AVE Mediterranean Corridor' line from France to Algeciras is that it will allow for the much more sensible carriage of goods, as opposed to road transport. The Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) have approved plans for a logistical “dry port” for goods in Nijar to be sent on by train. A business organization, Port Rail

Five days later they backtracked! Ana Pastor's deputy issued a press release saying that it had never been intended that the line from MurciaAlmería was exclusively for passengers, and it had always been envisaged as a “mixed” line. Julio GómezPomar had stated that no 'AVE' line in Spain was designed for goods and passengers, but the 'AVE' from Barcelona to Girona carries goods, and so will the line from Pais Vasco to France. Next idea?

Subject to Appeal

n January 9th, 2008, Helen and Len Prior unwittingly became the subject of international press reports when their luxury villa in Vera was demolished. Ever since, numerous TV channels and the press continue to portray this as an example of what can go horribly wrong if ex-pats buy a house in the sun. This April, Ana Fariñas a judge in Almería, awarded them 425,185 Euros to be paid by Vera town hall. She decided they had granted an illegal building licence but Helen and Len Prior were blameless. Her decision can be appealed in the High Court of Andalucía and Vera town intend to do this. They still don't consider that they did anything illegal and believe the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) picked them out and the Priors purely to make a partly political statement. This is quite possibly true and other houses alongside are untouched. This sad story started in 2002 when Helen and Len first came to Spain and chose one of six building plots being sold by 'Medsea Estates'. They did everything according to the book and found a builder and a solicitor to act for them, who subsequently notified them that everything was fine with the necessary permissions and they should go ahead. In May 2003, they moved into their house christened “Tranquilidad” the Spanish word for “Tranquility”. They paid 375,000 Euros and a pool was put in with landscaped gardens and other improvements. In 2006, they were told by Vera town hall that the Junta de Andalucía had revoked their building licence and their dream home had to be demolished forthwith. Further court proceedings took place that were never notified to them and on January 9th, 2008, a group of police and officials arrived and told them a bulldozer was going to demolish their house. They were given a few hours to remove some possessions and Spanish and English neighbours came to help. During the demolition, Len Prior collapsed and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance. Owing to a quirk in the planning

regulations their modified garage had a valid licence that had not been revoked and without mains water and electricity they have lived in it ever since. Helen & Len (on the right) at a recent demonstration

The court in Almería rejected a claim they had made for a valuation of the house at the time as being 602,083 Euros with an additional 200,000 Euros for grief and suffering. An offer from Vera town hall of 69,970 Euros for a refund of planning fees was also rejected. Ana Fariñas relied on two independent valuations of the property as being worth 454,917 or 377,065 Euros and split the difference. She awarded 7,442 Euros for moral damages to Len Prior and 1,752 for Helen. The only “good” thing about this story is that soon afterwards the “illegal' properties” pressure group 'AUAN' came into being and the Spanish penal code now states that no demolitions can take place without compensation to “good faith” purchasers. Lenox Napier, the well known journalist and Mojácar resident, recently published a question and answer interview with another journalist in the local Spanish newspaper 'Actualidad Almanzora'. The last question they asked Helen was what advice would she give to Northern Europeans wanting to come to Spain and the sun. Her simple reply was that they should come, but to rent not buy. If Vera town hall lose their appeal, the money will come from a Civil Liability insurance policy not town hall funds. Disgracefully, Helen and Len now in their early seventies have to soldier on.

So Now You Know... Finger Printing In 2000 BC, finger prints were pressed into clay tablets for business transactions in ancient Babylon. In 1686, a professor of anatomy in Italy classified fingerprints using a microscope as having distinctive loops, spirals, and ridges, but it was not seen as any useful tool. In 1858, a chief magistrate at Jungipoor in India required native Indians to “sign” documents using an ink impression of their right index and middle finger and in 1880, Dr Henry Faulds, a British surgeon in Tokyo, started classifying the distinctive patterns and sent his findings to Sir Charles Darwin. As he was ill he sent these to his cousin, Sir Francis Galton. In 1892, Galton published a book on fingerprints as a unique identification system.

Hotel Card Keys Keycard locks are opened by a flat rectangular plastic card normally the same dimensions as a credit card and in the US a driving licence. These cards have a magnetic strip bar code, radio-frequency identification (RFID), or the newest “chip” types. Keycards were first used in automated car parks to raise and lower the barrier. When hotels went global with ownership by chains in the 1950s they wanted standard efficiency policies and replace ordinary keys kept at reception that could be obtained fraudulently. The Norwegian Tor Sornes invented the first modern key card with 32 holes giving four million combinations in 1975 and his improved 1978 version without any holes was the modern forerunner.

Cannons A cannon that used gunpowder to propel a missile was first invented in China. The earliest illustration of a cannon dates back to 1326. The Chinese mounted 3,000 cast iron cannons on the Great Wall of China to repel the Mongols, probably about 1288 and refined their manufacture and length by 1350. Cannons became used in the 14thCentury in Islamic countries and stone balls could be projected over one mile. Large bronze cannons became used in 1464. By the end of the 15thCentury cannons were more mobile with a gun carriage and wheels but 20 horses were needed to move them around. The Royal Navy used improved smaller versions from 1779 and rifling (spiral lines in the barrel) dramatically improved accuracy.

Deaths in Air Transport The Frenchmen, Jean-Francois PilĂ˘tre de Rozier and Pierre Romain, lay claim to be the first people killed in a balloon, in 1785 . In September 1908, the first aircraft crash where a life was lost took place when Orville Wright was flying a plane and an American soldier Thomas Selfridge who was a passenger died. The crash in Tenerife in 1977 is still the one with the most deaths when 583 people died when a KLM 747 ploughed into a Pan Am 747 on the runway. There was dense fog but the KLM pilot had not been given permission to take off and only saw the Pan Am plane when it was too late. As a result, communication between air traffic controllers and pilots was improved with standard phraseology to avoid misunderstanding.

UK State Pensions In 1908, the first state pension was introduced for 500,000 people over 70 with small incomes who received five shillings a week. Life expectancy was a maximum of 79. In 1925, pensions that were not means tested were introduced but a married couple had to wait until they were both 65. Employers and employees made contributions every week. In 1940, the age a woman could claim went down to 60 but by 1948 men over 65 had to have retired as well. In 1995, the UK Government were forced to raise women's pensions to the same amount as men following pressure from Europe, but only by April 2010-2020. In 2007, pension age was raised progressively from 66 to 68 with a similar time scale.

Spray Paint In 1949, an American paint manufacturer was looking for a way to demonstrate the advantages of aluminium paint he had developed for radiators. His wife Bonnie suggested he used the same principle as spray deodorants she had. He invented a pressurized container with a valve that released the paint and air when a nozzle was depressed. He found that thin coats had to built up to avoid runs and masking was needed to define the area he was spraying. In the late 1970s, graffiti artists wanted very strong colours and special aerosol cans were developed. One type enabled large areas to be sprayed quickly using standard pressure with thicker paint and low pressure cans gave greater control for fine details.

We Need More Wind & Rain

ourists coming to Spain and residents look forward to sunny days and clear skies but wind and rain are really beneficial. The more it rains and the more wind we have the lower are our electricity bills. In April and May the cost of generating electricity in Spain fell dramatically and on May 8th went down to a cost that was hardly credible. Electricity in Spain comes from a variety of sources including coal-fired power stations that are the most costly for our bills, combined-cycle power stations using gas and fuel oil, nuclear sources, solar panels, hydroelectric, and wind power. The “renewable” sources of energy of wind power, hydroelectric sources (dams), and solar-power photovoltaic panels provide the cheapest energy and in an ideal world would produce all the energy needed every 24 hours. They can't do this but their contribution is high, or extremely high. This March, renewable energy sources supplied 51% of total requirement in Spain and 54% in April. Up to the middle of May it climbed to 57% and predictions are that it will have climbed to over 60% by the end of the month. On May 8th renewable sources of energy did supply 60% of the demand, an historic day never experienced before. The cost of energy that is reflected in our electricity bills has gone down by leaps and bounds in the last three months and has been 36% cheaper than the same months last year. Unfortunately the cost of energy makes up only about 30% of our total bill so any savings are unlikely to be more than 10%, but this is still a considerable decrease. If there were very high winds and torrential rain in theory the cost of electricity would be zero! Even if this happened, our bills would still be appreciative as distribution, maintenance, fixed costs, subsidies, and the punitive 21% 'IVA' (VAT) still apply.

The price is calculated for 1 Megawatt of electricity that is equivalent to having 1,000 water heaters plugged in with an element of 1 kilowatt (1,000 watts). If these are left on for one hour the cost is given as 1 Megawatt/hour. On March 5th, the cost of generating each Megawatt/hour was 11 Euros from non-renewable sources, the lowest in the month, and the highest cost was on March 18th when it peaked at 44 Euros and this has remained the highest daily cost so far this year. On April 10th the cost went down to just under 9 Euros and peaked at 35 Euros on April 22nd. On May 8th the record lowest cost ever was 5.46 Euros and up to the middle of May the highest cost was 36 Euros. So far this year Germany had a record day when 90% of their energy requirements came from renewable sources.

As we move into the summer months, households and businesses start firing up their air-conditioning and the energy requirement rises. Less rain and wind will increase the cost of producing what we need. Between July and September this year the current predicted average cost of producing 1 Megawatt/hour is 45 Euros so a big rise, and perhaps an average of 42 Euros from September to December. If these predictions are right this will still With the new “smart meters” that are being be 25% cheaper than 2015 but only a reduction of installed throughout Spain we are charged on the 8% in our bills. But anything is better then nothing!

The Fairer Sex

he private health cover provider 'DKV' have published the results of their third survey relating to women in Spain in conjunction with the University Hospital Rey Juan Carlos in Madrid. This has shown up some changes from 2014. 3,000 women between the ages of 18-65 were questioned on their general health and medical matters. 77% knew that every year they should have a “well woman” gynaecological test but only 43% did. Many women felt that they just didn't like going for these tests and kept putting them off. 27% of the women surveyed took medication that had not been prescribed by a doctor or health clinic and 2% bought medication to help them relax or sleep better. A feature of the survey that was present at the time of the last survey was that women with a low level of education or poorer work occupations took medication they had chosen to buy, daily. Women with a high level of education never or hardly ever took medicines or drugs that had not been prescribed. Women who stated that they slept between 7-9 hours a night were also more highly educated or qualified and those with less educational achievements slept fewer hours. Asked about their general health worries 44% were concerned about cancer and 12% with vascular diseases. 12% worried about contracting Alzheimer disease and 11% worried about getting depressed. The vast majority of women understood about cereals, bread, pasta, rice, and vegetables and how they related to a good diet but only 2% ate a variety of fresh fruit every day. 50% of the women tried to eat properly regarding meat, fish, and egg products and agreed that a healthy diet was directly linked to general health. Problems with overweight or obesity were accepted to be aggravated by eating processed or “fast food” that was bought as an easy option for meals. (51% of women in general who suffer from a chronic illness are usually overweight or obese). A very large number of women (over 90%) normally prepared food in the home or cooked it personally.

This has gone up from the last survey and economic difficulties may account for this. 40% of women sat in front of a TV or computer screen for more than three hours a day, not counting time at work.

A surprising result was that the number of women who smoked daily has gone up from 17% to 21% particularly amongst young women. Another 10% of different ages smoked irregularly but 69% (a slight rise in numbers) had now given up or had never smoked. Only 30% of the women surveyed took part in some kind of physical exercise and the chief reason was that they knew it was healthy, but others were trying to get slimmer and this is always a major consideration for women before the onset of summer when they wear fewer clothes and go to beaches. 62% (up from the last survey) had at some stage enrolled in physical exercise classes of some kind but later stopped going. Women over the age of 55 were trying to burn off calories to achieve a better standard of health, not looks. Most women considered that drinking water was good and 18% (up from 9%) tried to drink two litres a day. 24% in 2016 compared to 32% in 2014 drank less than one litre per day. 66% thought their general health was good or all right, but the other 33% said it wasn't, due to emotional problems often because they were separated or divorced.

Smartphone Phobias

any sociologists who study lifestyle, and psychologists who are interested in what problems people experience and how they deal with them are showing great concern regarding the phenomenon of smartphones. They think that the use people make of these hi-tech gadgets is becoming a real problem. Who would have thought when the “brick” mobile phone was invented in 1973 they would be replaced by devices such as the iPhone. Martin Cooper and Rudy Krolopp invented the first Motorola model that cost 4,000 dollars and weighed one and a half kilos. When by 1983 they only weighed 700g this revolutionized their use, particularly by “Yuppies”. Martin Copper who is now aged 87 predicts that one day we won't need to talk to anyone, our thoughts will be translated by integrated circuits in our brain area and transmitted to another person. Science fiction? iPhones were science fiction in 1983! Smartphones, apart from being a device to talk to another person, now double as an alarm clock, to a certain extent a wristwatch, a calculator, a sophisticated camera, games device, and a computer. Mp3 technology seen as a breakthrough at the time has now been almost sidelined. The UK company 'Tecmark' conduct surveys on the use of technology and many smartphone users admitted that they may spend more than three hours of their waking hours using smartphone facilities. Many people consider that smartphones have made their lives easier but there can be consequent problems. In the US, road deaths and accidents put down to a driver using a mobile phone has now superseded those caused by alcohol. 20% of pedestrians killed are stated to have had their attention distracted by using their mobiles, and the term for these people is “smombies” (smartphone zombies). Sherry Turkle is a well known sociologist / psychologist and says that smartphones have changed our lifestyle completely, but not always for the good. She states if two people are together with their smartphones their attention to each

other is reduced and conversation more banal. She says that a few years ago if two people were out for a meal it would have been considered the height of rudeness if one of them kept dipping into a book! With all the facilities of a smartphone, two people can consider that they “know” the other person well enough to have sex at their first meeting face to face. Manuel Armayones is a professor at the Oberto University in Catalonia and has published a book “El efecto smartphone” (the smartphone effect) and says that people are now pressurized to use smartphones because of the “Syndrome FOMO” (Fear of missing out) and are convinced that the lives of other people are much more interesting. He says that this can lead to “Nomophobia” that occurs when smartphone users have no charge on their battery or no coverage. He reports physical symptoms such as increased heartbeat, obsessive thoughts as to what they may be missing, and head and stomach aches.

Reverting to basic “dumbphones” is increasing and 6% of Japanese smartphone users have gone back to basic phones and believe they now have normal lives again. Batteries last much longer and if a “dumbphone” is dropped there is a good chance that the bits can be re-assembled! If not, a replacement phone is very cheap. “Phone Stacking” started in the UK and when people are out for the evening they all put their smartphones in a stack. The first person that gives in and picks up their mobile buys the next round of drinks or the meal!

Villaricos Dreambeach 2016 music festival is from August 12th-14th with a “welcome to Villaricos” event on August 11th. There is a huge line-up with Deadmaus on the Friday and 50 Cent headlining the Saturday listing their only

appearance in Spain. Tickets that include all the events are 65 Euros, and with camping 80 Euros. Entrance for one day only is 20 Euros (Thursday), 40 Euros (Friday), 45 Euros (Saturday) and 35 Euros ( S u n d ay c l o s i n g p a r t y ) .

Concerts Almería The OCAL String Quartet have their last concert in their series on June 5th at the Doña Pakyta Museum in Almería city, Plaza de Emilio Pérez at 12 noon. Entrance is free if available space. India Martínez, a Spanish flamenco style singer from Córdoba who has achieved international fame, is in concert at the Olympic Games Palace in Almería city on July 1st at 9.30pm. Tickets in advance are 25 or 30 Euros at the door. Her last concert in Almería was a sell out. Bertín Osborne comes to Almería city as part of his 2016 “Crooner” tour on July 2nd at 10pm at the Olympic Games Palace. He performs songs from Eric Clapton, Lionel Richie, Frank Sinatra and others. Tickets are 20 & 25 Euros.

Ara Malikian:15 is the title of a concert performed by the classical violinist of the same name on June 4th at 9pm, Auditorio Maestro Padilla, Almería city, celebrating his fifteen years of living in Spain. There is a varied programme and he is joined by Con Humberto Armas (viola); Jorge Guillén (violin); Antha Kumar (tablas indias); Tania Bernaez Abad (contra bass); Daniel López (violin); David Barona Oliver (cello). Tickets are 23 & 25 Euros As all tickets are sold for June 4th, he is in concert on June 5th as well. The OCAL String Quartet perform a concert on May 27th at the Doña Pakyta Museum in Almería city, Plaza de Emilio Pérez. Entry is free. Performers are Manuel Camacho & Mar ta Fernández (first and second violinists), Araceli Morales (viola) and Andreu Marco (cello). What’s On Roquetas Niña Pastori, the very famous female singer, comes to Roquetas Auditorio as part of her 2016 world tour, “Ámame Como Soy”, on Saturday, June 18th at 9.30pm. Tickets are 21, 25, and 28 Euros. 'Pulpop 2016', the annual music festival will take place on July 8th and 9th at the Roquetas bullring. Momentos de Luz is a photographic exhibition by Colectivo FotoArt depicting the work from a group of six photographers who are resident in Andalucía but with images not just within Spain. Between them they represent 250 years of experience. The exhibition is in Mojácar village at the Mirador de Castillo art gallery off the Plaza Nueva square area. It can be seen until June 15th and opening hours are 9am-2pm, Tuesday-Fridays and 10am-2pm, Saturdays and Sundays. Museo de Arte Doña Pykta, A l m e r í a c i t y. An Episcopal Priest, a Catholic Priest, and a Rabbi are discussing funerals and the question came up -- "When you are in your casket, and friends, family, and congregants are mourning over you, what would you like to hear them say?"

Thomas is 32 years old and he is still single. One day a friend asked, "Why aren't you married? Can't you find a woman who will be a good wife?" Thomas replied, "Actually, I've found many women I wanted to marry, but when I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn't like them." His friend thinks for a moment and says, "I've got the perfect solution, just find a girl who's just like your mother." A few months later they meet again and his friend says, "Did you find the perfect girl? Did your mother like her?" With a frown on his face, Thomas answers, "Yes, I found the perfect girl. She was just like my mother. You were right, my mother liked her very much." The friend said, "Then what's the problem?" Thomas replied, "My father doesn't like her."

The Episcopal Priest says, "I would like to hear them say that I was a wonderful husband, a fine spiritual leader, and a great family man." The Catholic Priest says, "I would like to hear that I was a wonderful teacher and a servant of God who made a huge difference in people's lives." The Rabbi replies, "I would like to hear them say, 'Look, he's moving!'"

An elderly lady was concerned about her husband’s hearing. It seemed that every time she would call him, he wouldn’t respond. So, the lady went to the doctor to ask his advice. The doctor said to her, “When you go home, tell your husband to stand at the end of the hallway, and you should stand at the other end. Ask him what he wants for dinner. Continue to move him closer towards you until he responds to your question so you know exactly how far away he is from you when he finally hears you.” She thought this was a great idea. When she got home, she placed her husband at the end of the hallway and yelled, “Herbert, what do you want for dinner?” There was no response. She moved 10 feet closer. Again she yelled, “Herbert, what do you want for dinner?” No response. She moved another 15 feet closer to where she was now practically face to face with her husband. She yelled even louder this time, “HERBERT, what do you want for dinner?” Herbert yelled back at her, “For the THIRD time, I want chicken!”

The Electric Chair Three women go down to Mexico one night to celebrate college graduation. They get drunk and wake up in jail, only to find that they are to be executed in the morning – though none of them can remember what they did the night before. The first one, a redhead, is strapped in the electric chair and is asked if she has any last words. She says, “I just graduated from Trinity Bible College and believe in the almighty power of God to intervene on the behalf of the innocent.” They throw the switch and nothing happens. They all immediately fall to the floor on their knees, beg for forgiveness, and release her. The second one, a brunette, is strapped in and gives her last words. “I just graduated from the Harvard School of Law and I believe in the power of justice to intervene on the part of the innocent.” They throw the switch and again, nothing happens. Again they all immediately fall to their knees, beg for forgiveness and release her. The last one, a blonde, is strapped in and says, “Well, I’m from the University of Texas and just graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and I’ll tell ya right now, ya’ll ain’t gonna electrocute nobody if you don’t plug this thing in.”

A third-grade teacher is getting to know her pupils on the first day of school.
