Elections and Moors & Christians
T
he months of April and May this year in Spain have been polarised by elections. General Elections took place on April 28th followed by local municipal elections on May 26th. 2019 is the year for the elections of Euro MPs so these also took place on May 26th.
New legislation has been introduced that compels employers to log the hours that their employees put in. The aim is that extra hours count as overtime and should be paid as such. There is a great deal of confusion at present as to how this is implemented but we deal with this in an article.
Pedro Sánchez, the socialist Prime Minister, called premature General Elections on April 28th to gain more MPs for his PSOE party and this did happen with the number of MPs going up from 85 to 123. With the left wing Unidos Podemos party he was close to having a majority in parliament, and his aim is that he doesn’t have to form a strict alliance with any of the very small parties. The PP Conservative party had a very bad day at the polls and went down from 137 MPs to 66 losing votes to the Ciudadanos Conservative party and Vox the ultra-right wing party. We comment on the results in our “In the News” section. The results of the municipal elections were not clear at the time of going to press but it was expected that The big event in Mojácar is the annual ‘Moors & the PSOE might make similar gains. In the News Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba After a very short stay in hospital, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba who was a very famous Spanish politician, died following a stroke on May 10th aged 67. Electioneering had started at midnight on May 9th/ 10th for the municipal elections but an official period of mourning was announced from 8pm May 10th until midnight May 11th, and electioneering was suspended until Monday. Alfredo belonged to the Socialist PSOE party and he was held in extremely high regard and was considered to one of the founding fathers of the Spanish constitution. One of the terms used to describe him was “A genuine statesman”. His coffin was taken to the Spanish parliament and laid in state. The first visitors were King Felipe VI and Queen Leticia followed by leading politicians, past and present, from all the political parties, and on Sunday, King Felipe’s parents, the honorary King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, arrived to pay their respects. Very large numbers of the general public waited patiently to gain admission and eventually some of them had to be told that they would not be able to enter before the closing time. Becoming a rising start at an early age, Alfredo rose to become Vice President in the Spanish parliament and the General Secretary of the PSOE party. He was very influential in bringing members of the Basque ETA terrorist group to justice and forging a much closer alliance with the French police so that investigations were shared. ETA announced a ceasefire in October 2011, but Alfredo kept going as ETA had announced ceasefires before that didn’t last for very long. After he retired from politics he kept in touch with many of the families of the people who had been assassinated by ETA.
Extending the Maestro Padilla Auditorio The Maestro Padilla Auditorio in Almería city is the main venue for cultural events and it is going to be extended. There will be space for the Almería city orchestras and choirs to practice as at present they have to use a conference centre in El Toyo. Architects were invited to submit proposals and there have been 70 entries. These have been monitored by the Almería College of Architects to establish that they are viable, and the famous Spanish architect Federico Soriano Peláez will head the committee that selects
the best designs. He has designed many large buildings of this nature including the Málaga auditorio. The number of entries will be reduced to just three, and the architects who have submitted their design will have to send in a full technical specification with the cost. A further selection will then take place to choose the winning design.
Another Twist in the Algarrobico Saga The 412 room 21 storey Algarrobico hotel was given a building licence by Carboneras town hall in 2003. After Greenpeace “discovered” the almost completed hotel when interviews for staff were taking place, various objections were raised. A court in Almería stopped any more work and the present state of the hotel is exactly how it was left then. The only modification is that on a Sunday, Greenpeace activists daubed black paint on the facade on two occasions. They painted on “HOTEL ILEGAL”, but after they had gone away Carboneras residents painted out the “I” both times so it then read “HOTEL LEGAL”! One of the major problems is that the hotel was constructed 20m from the maritime boundary (usually indicated by concrete posts on the beach or beyond it). At a later date it became clear that the distance from the maritime boundary should have been 100m, but there was a lot of discussion as to whether this was right. Azata del Sol, the developers, are fighting hard to stop the hotel being demolished which has been agreed by the Junta de Andalucía and Central Government but the proceedings to do this are still grinding through the civil courts. If so, they consider that they are entitled to 70 million Euros in compensation plus interest and costs that comes to 90 million Euros. The developers are now stating that Carboneras town hall defended the 20m distance when they knew it was really 100m so they consider that Carboneras town hall owe them the 90 million Euros. The developers are also going after the Junta de Andalucía who confirmed the building licence at the time and then issued various contradictory decisions regarding the distance from the boundary. Azata del Sol are also complaining that Ministry of the Environment along with ‘Costas’ (the coastal authority) spent a very long time before deciding that 100m was the correct distance and that at one time they said it was 50m! Azata del Sol don’t mind

In the News who pays them the 90 million Euros as long as one of them does! Greenpeace has been petitioning various courts to instruct Carboneras town hall to cancel the building licence, but the town hall consistently claim that it was fully legal at the time and they will not withdraw it and neither will they issue a demolition order. The Junta de Andalucía has been trying to get Azata del Sol to accept 2.3 million Euros in compensation that was the “official” price for the land on the ‘escritura’ (title deed). This has never been agreed either and when a representative from the Junta turned up at a notary in Almería city several years ago with a bank draft for the 2.3 million Euros Azata del Sol didn’t turn up. Instead, they sent a letter saying they were not accepting the money.
The Red Cross and Children Last month in an article we explained the activities of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) in Spain, and the fact that they place young children in families. On May 15th which was International Family Day, members of the Red Cross in Almería city took to the streets. They pegged children’s bibs on washing lines in various parts of the city and handed out leaflets. María del Carmen Gonzáles is in charge of this programme and she told journalists that came to the event that last year they placed 158 children with 131 families. She explained that every type of family would be considered and some children had been placed with single men and women and same sex couples, but every application was carefully investigated. Each participant can choose the approximate age of a child and decide whether they would take brothers and sisters and the length of time they are prepared to look after the children.
Taking Iron Ore to Carboneras Port The Alquife iron ore mine just across the border with Almeria and Granada was shut in the 1970s but the Dutch owners are opening it up again. Originally the iron ore was transported to Almería city in trains and then discharged at ‘El Cable Inglés’ which is a pier where the cargo ships docked. The iron ore was discharged into hoppers that sent it down into a ship that only took eight hours to fill. At present, the pier is being further renovated and will become a tourist and resident attraction. Proposals from the
company that the iron ore could be taken to Almería city by rail to the port once again have been refused by Almería city council. The current agreement between the Junta de Andalucía and Carboneras town hall is that the iron ore is put into covered lorries and taken to the port where cargo ships will take it on board. The intention of the company is that 100,000 tonnes will be loaded onto three ships that can each carry 30,000 tonnes. The estimated loading time for each boat is 8 days so 24 days in total. The plan is that this will be done during June, August and September. The company have agreed to erect a screen that would minimise dust and noise. 16 associations are pressurising the town hall to withdraw the permission on the grounds of noise and inconvenience for residents, damage to the environment and public health. They state that heavy lorry traffic in an area that is being developed as a tourist attraction is incompatible, apart from damage to the roads. They also point out that 80% of the land in Carboneras is in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata. The association held a protest meeting outside the town hall on May 18th that was followed by a council meeting. A spokesperson from an opposition party in Carboneras stated that 500 lorries per day in the summer months was completely inacceptable, and other ports were nearer to the mine.
Buying Clothes from Supermarkets in Spain Last year it was revealed that clothes worn by Pablo Iglesias, the leader of the left wing political party Unidos Podemos, were purchased at the Alcampo supermarket chain. The Spanish group Inditex, owned by Amancia Ortega, have large fashion and clothing companies such as Zara, Stradivarius, Bershka, Lefties and Pull and Bear, and there are also the chains of Mango, H & M and El Corte Inglés. A recent retail survey by the analysts Kantar Worldpanel has revealed that other companies and supermarket chains are selling more clothes in many cases. Primark was the leader in 2018, and they sold clothes to 10 million customers, ahead of El Corte Inglés. Decathlon was next in the list with 9.4 million customers, ahead of Zara, and Carrefour had 7.5 million customers ahead of H & M, C & A, Stradivarius and Pull and Bear with the same number of 4.6 million customers as Lydl. Rosa Pilar López, the clothing analyst from Kantar

In the News Worldpanel, states that it is quite logical that supermarket customers will buy clothing along with normal items at the same time. Carrefour, Lydl and Alcampo sold clothing to 15.5 million customers in 2018 which is 17% of all purchasers, and in particular they sold a lot of clothes for children and young adults. Regular supermarket customers were in a good position to spot special offers at competitive prices. The Inditex group have made great strides into the fashion market out of Spain and exported clothing to the value of 10 billion Euros last year, the second largest company for exports with 77% of all exported clothing. Only Repsol, the fuel company, billed more foreign customers with sales of 11 billion Euros.
(High Speed train) and it is also near Almería airport. For this reason Níjar has been chosen over other proposals to site the complex in Tabernas or Almería city. Apart from technical installations and film editing there will be large buildings where filming can take place and various “water tanks” for filming that needs this facility.
Fruit Prices from Supplier to Customer Agricultural companies frequently complain bitterly that the price the consumer pays for their products is grossly above what they are paid. There is an official weekly index that records prices from “Origin to destination” and they recently stated that Almería growers were being paid 29 céntimos per kilo for aubergines that were sold to the consumer for 1 Euros 77 céntimos. As regards lettuces, the grower was paid 13 céntimos, but the consumer paid an average of 93 céntimos. Broccoli growers were paid 33 céntimos per kilo with the consumer paying 2 Euros 50 céntimos. The increase in the prices of fruit such as lemons was recently 867% and for oranges 962%. Growers say that a 600 -1,000% markup is most unfair, and in many cases the growers transport the products to the supermarkets so there is no transport cost that has to be included in the selling price.
A Major Film Centre Almería province is experiencing a large boost in the number of films and commercials that are filmed in various places. There is no major infrastructure that is available for the film-makers and one will be built near Níjar at Campohermoso called “The Almería City of Film”. The project is being mostly financed by the Andalucía Film Commission and will cover an area of 500,000m2. Níjar has been chosen as the ideal site for transport and is the location of the “dry port” that will be a hub for road transport and the ‘AVE’
Ditching Roadside Emergency Triangles The DGT (Spanish Road Traffic Authority) is waiting for the new parliament to be in force when a new directive will be put into law. This relates to the two roadside reflective triangles that a driver is required to put in place behind a vehicle when it has broken down or been in an accident. To put these in place, a driver has to wear a reflective jacket that has to be kept inside the vehicle, not in the boot. The new regulations are that a driver whose vehicle has broken down will use a special light that is magnetic and can be put on the roof of a car without getting out, in a matter of seconds. The design and characteristics of these emergency lights is part of the new regulations, and these will replace the triangles and reflective jackets. This is because there have been many accidents and fatalities when drivers were on the road behind their vehicle putting the warning triangles in place, particularly in poor visibility. After a vehicle is able to proceed, a driver still has to collect the triangles and put them back in the vehicle, usually in the boot, which is considered another dangerous time. The triangles will be able to be used up to January 1st, 2024, but the DGT hope that drivers will obtain the new lights as soon as possible. Associations of road accident victims are asking that the date of 2024 is brought forward to January 1st,

In the News 2022. The Spanish company Netun Solutions that has been set up by engineers and former traffic police is selling lights that they call “Help Flash”. These are battery powered and stated to keep flashing for 3 hours and will continue to work for a period of 3 years before the 9 volt battery needs replacing. The flashing lights are stated to be visible from a distance of 1km with a 360 degree field of vision, and they can also be used as an illumination device that doesn’t flash for a period of five hours. Devices such as this one, providing they comply with the regulations will be available at garages or other retail outlets or from Netun Solutions via the internet at a cost of 29 Euros 29 céntimos by going to www.helpflash.com. The company describe it as “A light to save lives”. They are suitable to be placed on motorbikes or mobility scooters as well as cars. General advice for passengers in a vehicle that has broken down in a traffic flow is that they stay in the vehicle with their seat belts in place. If it is considered safe to exit the vehicle and persons can get a suitable distance away, this should be done on the side of the vehicle furthest from the road.
The Spanish Female Football Final The Spanish female league matches have proved to be extremely popular and broken many records for attendance. On Sunday, May 11th the final took place at the newly opened Los Cármenes football stadium in Granada that was the chosen venue because of the high capacity for spectators. The two teams from Real Sociedad and Atlético de Madrid battled it out to win the “La Copa de Reina” trophy (The Queen’s Cup), and Queen Leticia presented it personally to the captain of Real Sociedad who had won 2-1. This was the first time that any Spanish Queen had come to the female football final to present the cup and she was joined by the mayor of Granada, the President of the Female Football Federation and the President of the Junta de Andalucía. Queen Leticia told the crowd that female sport was very important, not just in football. She indicated that in future years she intended to present the trophy to the winning team. The number of women footballers in Spain has mushroomed in recent years and there are now 60,000 who belong to the federation. The final was televised and this
also broke all records with 1.6 million viewers that rose to a peak of 2.2 million when the cup was presented. This was 20% of all viewers who were watching television at the time, and 18,000 spectators filled the stadium with large numbers arriving in coaches who had made the long journey from Bilbao, the home of Real Sociedad.
A Spanish Heat Wave Rubén Del Campo a spokesperson for the Spanish Meteorology Department issued a stark warning on May 9th. He announced very unusual high temperatures for the next few days with temperatures that were disproportionately high and of a level that would not normally be experienced until mid-June and July. Three quarters of Spain including Andalucía were registering temperatures of 28-30 degrees with 36 degrees in Seville, the capital city of Andalucía. Rubén Del Campo explained that there was a mass of warm air coming from Africa and in general Spain was not experiencing very much wind. He stated that the meteorological department might well issue heat warnings for places such as Seville and Córdoba where temperatures of 36 degrees were experienced and a few days later warnings were published. In May 2015 there was a short heat wave and Seville registered a temperature of 41 degrees for two days whilst at Valencia airport the temperature reached 42.6 degrees. These were the highest May temperatures since 1964. Predictions were that the high temperatures would continue and June and July might be unusually hot as well, with a possible increase of 8-10 degrees above normal temperatures or even a peak of 15 degrees in some areas. People most affected by very high temperatures are the elderly over the age of 75, very young children and babies, and those suffering from chronic diseases such as heart or breathing problems. Persons with serious mental health issues can suffer from the heat and those taking medication that alters their internal body temperature and sweating. People who are physically active such as labourers and people taking part in strenuous sport must also take great care they don’t become dehydrated and are affected by sunstroke. Tourists and residents not used to excessive high temperatures are advised not to stay on a beach

In the News between midday and 4pm and everybody must drink a lot of water. If there is an “orange alert”, those people at high risk are particularly vulnerable, and visits by health professionals or the Red Cross will be made. A national “red alert” in Spain can result in heat-related illnesses and deaths in the general population. General advice to pet owners is that pets can suffer from heat strokes as well, so adequate cool drinking water must be available and on no account leave pets in a stationary car in the sun even for a short period of time. Signs of heat stroke in a dog are rapid panting, a lot of drooling, muscle spasms and vomiting. Immediate treatment by a vet is vital if a pet does suffer a heat stroke.
A Lot of Money in a Crashed Camper Van Guardia Civil police went to a traffic accident on May 9th near Granada where they had been advised that a camper van had turned over and was very close to a large drop. Initially they encountered a couple who were from Lithuania with minor injuries who were transported to hospital. They found another injured man from Lithuania in the camper van who appeared to be under the effects of drugs and who was searching through the possessions. He was transported to hospital and the recovered camper van was taken to the police headquarters for further investigation as the activities of the man aroused their suspicions. Inside they found a suitcase with 18,000 Euros and under the seats a very large amount of money that they estimated could be several million Euros. The exact amount could not be ascertained until they found a bank that was prepared to count it, but this did not prove to be at all easy because of security problems. The Lithuanians denied that they money was theirs! In Spain the maximum amount of money that can be transported is 100,000 Euros without a certificate from the tax agency or customs, and money taken out of Spain cannot be more than 10,000 Euros.
MPs on Remand Let Out to Attend Parliament In the General Elections on April 28th five people who have been on remand in prison since the end of 2017 were elected as members of parliament, and one of them to the senate. They are all currently
in court in Madrid charged with serious offences that relate to the illegal referendum in Catalonia and the illegal declaration of independence in October 2017. Lawyers asked that they be released from prison, but a judge denied this as it is considered they are all still at risk of leaving Spain. The Spanish High Court ruled that with suitable security they would be allowed to go to parliament on May 21st for the forming of the new government, and then be immediately taken back to prison. Their lawyers also claimed that they had now had immunity from prosecution as they are elected MPs, but the judge stated that the offences for which they have been charged occurred a very long time ago, well before the April 28th elections. Oriol Junqueras, who is one of the men in prison on remand, asked to be allowed to take part in a televised debate on May 16th regarding the European elections on May 26th. A court denied this as the debate started at 10pm and this would “gravely disturb the normal prison activity at this time of night”. When parliament was constituted on May 21st the Senate (Upper house) instructed the Congress (Lower house) that the MPs had to be disbarred from office. The former expresident of Catalonia, Carles Puidgemont, fled Spain before he was due to be arrested and now lives in Brussels. He is intending to stand as a Euro MP and there have been various court cases as to whether he can do this. The Spanish Supreme Court decided that he and two other persons who are exgovernment ministers in Catalonia and fled Spain could stand as Euro MPs but this would need confirming by a court in Madrid who then agreed with this ruling. This was in opposition to a ruling by the Spanish Central Election Commission that they could not stand as they were living in a foreign country and had not registered themselves as Spaniards living abroad. This would have entailed a visit to the Spanish embassy in Brussels and once there, “on Spanish soil”, they would be arrested. One of the political parties in Spain, the PP Conservative party, appealed the permission to stand to the Spanish Constitutional Court. They state that it can’t possibly be legal that a person who has fled Spain to avoid prosecution and is living abroad is entitled to stand as a Euro MP for a Spanish political party. Inés Arrimadas, the leader of the Ciudadanos Conservative

In the News party in the Catalonia parliament, states that it is absolutely “shameful” that a “fugitive from justice” can be allowed these rights. Ultimately, legal opinion is that even if they are elected to be Euro MPs they would have to come back to Spain to be confirmed in parliament. Carles Puidgemont and the other two are not going to do this as they would be immediately arrested as soon as they set foot in Spain!
Is There a Doctor Onboard? In films one of the most favourite instructions is, “Follow that taxi!” or the question on an aircraft, “Is there a doctor on board?” On average, once in every 604 flights this question is asked and in 90% of cases there is a person who can give attention to a passenger. There are about 132 deaths on aircraft every year but many in-air problems are as simple as a person fainting, suffering respiratory problems, vomiting and nausea, or the more serious cases of heart problems, psychiatric problems and strokes. Having a heart attack on a plane is very infrequent. Airline crew have basic first aid kits and they may have been trained how to use a heart defibrillator (assuming there is one on board) and how to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre. They usually have another kit solely for the use of qualified medical personnel with various drugs and surgical equipment. Doctors tend to be frequent fliers for pleasure, or they are going to conferences. Lufthansa give free flying miles and discounts to doctors who respond to emergencies. Ultimately, the pilot is the person that has the last word on whether a plane is going to be diverted which costs thousands of Euros apart from the inconvenience for other passengers. Recently, a young lady from Córdoba who had just finished her training to be a surgeon responded to a call for help on a flight to Paris. A passenger had gone into anaphylactic shock after eating a product containing pineapple that she was highly allergic to. Using equipment on the aircraft, Estefanía García made sure that her airways were unobstructed using a cannula and administered an adrenaline injection. Although she had been stabilized she then had a second attack and Estefanía advised the pilot that the woman did need urgent medical attention in a hospital. The pilot took the decision to divert to Nantes and hospital staff later told Estefanía that
she had saved the woman’s life. Manuel Liñán, the co-ordinator at the large accident and emergency centre at a hospital in Granada, responded to a call for help. He dealt with a patient who appeared to be having a heart attack but he decided that the man was actually having a panic attack. After the man took several deep breaths into a sickness bag he became calm. Manuel later stated that dealing with an in-air medical problem was very different to his normal work surrounded by hi-tech equipment!

In the News 60 metres below the surface they discovered an enormous transparent geode which is a crystalline structure. It measures 8m in length and is 2m high and it has been formed from crystals in the yeso (gypsum) mine. It is considered to be of major importance, not only in Spain, but access through narrow passages was extremely difficult even for the seasoned explorers. In July it is expected that major work giving access to galleries and the geode will be completed and the general public will be able to see it. Along the main access to the gallery there are other geodes and a feature of them is that they appear to glow in the dark. Apart from yeso, iron ore and lead were extracted from the mine until the 1960s and provided employment in the area. In total there are 350m of galleries in the mine.
The Spanish General Elections General Elections took place on April 28th and the results were pretty well as we predicted. Pedro Sánchez from the PSOE Socialist party had been Prime Minister since July 2017, but he only had 85 MPs out of the total of 350 so passing any legislation meant agreement by other parties, and he was unable to get the 2019 budget approved. General Elections were to take place in 2020, but he dissolved parliament prematurely with the hope that he would gain a lot more seats. This was a correct forecast as he went up to 123 MPs, still short of a majority, but much better. The left-wing Podemos party have been wracked by some disputes involving their leaders and they went down from 67 MPs to 42. The PP Conservative party took a dive from 137 MPs down to 66 which is the worst result for them for a number of years. 46% of voters from Mojácar voted for the PP party in 2016 but this time the percentage went down to 30%. The Ciudadanos party (also conservative) gained 25 seats with a total of 57 MPs. The Vox ultra-right wing party did not stand at the last General Elections but they obtained 24 seats that political pundits consider to be very worrying. They are against abortion, gay marriages, and major amounts of money and effort being spent on defeating domestic violence, and they also think that autonomous communities (in our case Andalucía) should not be able to vote for their own governments and central government should take them over. They
obtain support in places where there are a high number of immigrants that is seen as a problem. Pablo Iglesias who leads the Podemos party has pledged allegiance to Pedro Sanchez to form a coalition but their combined numbers only come to 165 and they need a minimum of 176 seats. Other small parties obtained seats, with the ERC party in Catalonia having 15 MPs. The PSOE and Ciudadanos party have 180 seats between them, but Albert Rivera, their leader, wants to be the main party in opposition. Pedro Sánchez stated that he would not make any firm decision until after the municipal elections that took place on May 26th. His party and Podemos could form a government with a slight minority, or he could forge links with them and other small parties to gain a majority. 75% of all voters on the electoral rolls went to vote which is a high percentage and up 8% on the last general Elections.
A Large Backlog in Court Cases In June 2013, the EU court ruled that the “floor rates” (cláusulas suelo) in force in many Spanish mortgages were “abusive” and illegal and the Spanish Supreme court adopted this decision in their own legislation. This referred to mortgage lenders who used the ‘Euribor’ (interbank lending rate) variable rate of interest and added their own amount of interest. Many lenders set a minimum rate of interest and when the Euribor rate went down to a very low or negative amount this advantage was not passed on. Mortgage holders not satisfied by the response from the lender when they ask for compensation can go to court. Special judges were set on in every province in June 2017 to hear solely these complaints but they are all snowed under. There are 87,300 court cases waiting to be dealt with in Andalucía and 3,985 in Almería city. In 2018 the judge in Almería resolved 1,275 complaints so at this rate of dealing with them it will take three years for all of them to be heard! As a result of these backlogs, additional court employees were set on in January to reduce the lists by initially screening all the paperwork. In Seville there are 16,400 cases waiting to be heard and 10,000 in Cádiz and Málaga. Banks or lenders have to pay the court costs of a person taking them to court and in 99.5% of cases judges rule in favour of the mortgage holder.

A police spokesperson stated that there were many thousands of plants being grown with a very large number of special lights, air-conditioning units and extractor fans. Four people were arrested initially and it was stated that many more arrests would follow. In May 2018, also in Roquetas de Mar, another cannabis farm was dismantled where 13 empty apartments were being used with a total of 3,000 plants under cultivation.
In a unique pioneering case in Spain, vets in Almería city have opened a blood bank for dogs. Previously, when a dog needed an operation and a blood transfusion, the blood had to be obtained from Madrid and then brought to vets via a courier service. In some cases this was too late. Vets can now obtain blood and plasma from the Almería centre very quickly when they know that operations need to be carried out. Emilio Gómez-Lama is the President of the Almería College of Vets and has hailed this initiative as being of prime impor tance. Apart from being designed as a protection for consumers, the new regulations will allow many types of bread or bread products to be sold at the “super reduced” rate of 4% IVA (VAT) rather than the 10% rate that applied to many of the “special” products at present.
Good News for the Huércal-Overa Hospital The new government of Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) are having a concerted effort to get hospital waiting times reduced, employ more staff and pay people such as surgical personnel to work in the afternoons and Saturday mornings. They claim that the previous government had fiddled the numbers to show a better situation. An announcement has been made by Juan de la Cruz Belmonte who is the Health delegate in Almería regarding La Inmaculada hospital in Huércal-Overa. There is now a new specialist in Dermatology, as from May 2017 there has not been one. The health delegate announced that in December last year there were 798 patients on the waiting list for operations for more than a year, and this number has been reduced at the end of April by 78. Health unions complain every year when in the high summer season wards are shut or operations suspended but this summer operations would continue which has not been the case for nine years. Health professionals are not compelled to work extra hours but they do get paid. Juan de la Cruz Belmonte stated that the response had been excellent.
The Calar Alto Observatory
The astronomy observatory at Calar Alto near Gergal in Almería province is considered to be of prime importance and they have made major discoveries apart from working in conjunction with other observatories in Spain and internationally. They previously obtained funding from a German institution, Max-Plank-Gesellschaft, but they pulled out last year. The Junta de Andalucía have announced that they will provide 1.5 million Euros, which is 50% of the funding needed, and the Spanish Scientific Investigation Agency will come up with the other A Reclassification of Types of Bread 50%. The ship had come from Valencia and takes containers back there to their operation centre which is the hub for onward travel to the US, South America, Africa and China. The goods delivered were large rolls of paper for the printing industry, glass, food and fertilizers, and apart from goods from Cosentino the ship took onboard cement, plastics, food and other agricultural products. Cosentino came to an agreement with MSC last December for regular visits, and last June with the enormous container company Maersk that comes to Almería port every week. Goods loaded onboard are taken to Algeciras which is their container hub for goods going to Europe. The Maersk line also carries special refrigerated containers for food that are temperature monitored whilst they are onboard. In 2018, a total of 90,000 tonnes of products left Almería port, and this was 150% more than in 2017. In the first quarter of 2019 some 50,000 tonnes was handled, and the volume makes Almería one of the busiest in Spain with a growth in capacity that is the third largest in Spain.
Holiday Lets in Almería Province Since 2016, in Andalucía, urban properties let to tourists for holidays have to be registered and given a registration number. Part of the registration process is that they have to have a certain level of furnishing, heating and air-conditioning, linen and cleaning between lets, instructions for the use of items such as electronic ones, tourist information, a complaints book and a fire extinguisher, and the Guardia Civil police has to be informed of the identity of the renters the same as hotels. There are inspectors who come to have a look at properties and either approve them or point out any deficiencies. At the end of 2018 there were 18,000 properties registered in Almería province. Internet companies now have to show the reference number of the property, and portals such as Airbnb have been fined heavily for not doing this. Persons from the registration department monitor advertising to detect properties that have not been registered and the owners can be fined. The ‘Hacienda’, the Spanish Tax Department, requires owners to declare rental
income when it is more than 1,000 Euros per annum. Data relating to Almería province is that there are 8,200 registered properties that appear on ‘Airbnb’ who have 4,800, some 2,200 on ‘Homeway’, 750 on ‘Housetrip’ and 475 on ‘Onlyapartments’. The properties on offer from these internet companies amount to 1,800 in Vera, 1,250 in Roquetas de Mar, 1,200 in Níjar and 650 in Almería city. The total number of people who can be accommodated in Vera is stated to be 3,750 in private premises compared to 6,800 in hotels. Mojácar is very close behind with 3,740 people compared to 9,500 in hotels, hostals and apartment hotels. Tourist numbers in Spain dropped off slightly in 2018, and the same thing has happened to the number of nights spent in holiday accommodation. In Almería province in 2017 there were 962,000 nights spent by tourists in accommodation but this fell to 941,000 last year. The total numbers of people who stayed here in holiday accommodation in 2018 was 181,000.
Blood, Plasma and Bone Marrow Donations Every year the blood transfusion service goes to Almería University and there are a large number of donors spread over a two day period. The people who give blood and plasma are much younger that normal donors, and 91% are aged from 18-30 with many of the teaching staff giving blood as well. Of the total of 668 donors, 273 gave blood and plasma for the first time. Aref Laarej is the Director of the transfusion centre in Almería city and he stated that this sector of the population was very important as many of them continued to make donations afterwards. In Almería city it will shortly be possible to undertake bone marrow transplants that up to now were only made at Granada. Spain has led the world in the number of organ donations for many years and often this is stated to be because a person has to “opt-out” of being an organ donor. This is completely untrue and all donations are voluntary. When a person is certified as being “brain-dead” in a hospital, special staff ask relatives if organs can be donated and transplanted. In the vast majority of cases this is agreed, and people will often tell their relatives that this is what they want to happen in the event of their death. Spanish donor cards can be obtained but the relatives are the ones who give

Police realised that the same fraud was being carried out in Seville, Granada, Jaén and Madrid where there were further arrest warrants issued. Last March she was supposed to take part in a video link from Almería to answer charges from a court in Ciudad Real, but she didn’t turn up for this either. This April, police were alerted to the fact that further offers of rental properties were being made on one of the websites the woman used last year, and police in Almería made contact with the woman to pay a deposit. She was met by plain-clothed police officers who then arrested her again. The full extent of the fraud is still not completely quantified as the woman changed her name and used various mobile phones numbers that were subsequently ditched. A current estimate of the money she took as deposits is put at a minimum of 10,000 Euros. She is now on remand whilst the various arrest warrants are sorted out and will not be released on bail! A police spokesperson has warned holiday makers that offers of rented accommodation at very cheap prices is a possible indication of fraud, and the promise of sending keys through the post after a deposit has been paid is also very suspect. checking. One bad review referred to the Marina Beach Club as being a badly run beach bar, whilst the owners say that it is a fully fledged restaurant. Bradford Young told the court that there were 360,000 reviews every day and there were only 1% of complaints, but Tripadvisor would remove slanderous comments such as the claim that the restaurant owners were defrauding the Spanish Social Services. He stated that Tripadvisor was no more than a “host” for comments by third parties and they allowed the owners of restaurants or any other company the right to respond to critical comments. The lawyer for the club’s owners stated that a description of the food being “toxic” should not have been allowed without investigation. He also stated that the turnover of the restaurant was 13 million Euros in 2018 but the bad comments meant they were now losing trade. Bradford Young entirely agreed that bad reviews would obviously affect trade but claimed that as a company Tipadvisor were not responsible. The judge has yet to give his judgement.

Another bad review was that they were defrauding the Spanish Social Security Department, but this was removed after 36hrs. One complaint referred to staff as being unfriendly and poorly qualified. Mojácar PGOU All municipalities have to have a planning document called ‘el Plan General de Ordenación Urbanística’ known as PGOU. On April 25th, just a month away from municipal elections on May 26th, a provisional document was approved at a special town hall council meeting. In November 2013, an initial proposed document was approved and then published in 2014 that resulted in 105 requests for complaints to be considered and dealt with. Following this a new planning document was published in March 2017 and 71 further complaints followed. At the April 25th council meeting the mayoress Rosa María Cano stated that these had been dealt with and no further publication of the plan was necessary. Opposition councillors voiced their concerns that apparently there were still anomalies that their lawyers would study. The document was passed provisionally by the 8 PP political party councillors who have a majority out of the total of 13. The results of the May 26th elections may well have a bearing on the final approval of the town plan.
Young People Leaving Home 33% of the young population in Spain aged 16-29 are unemployed compared to the average of 13% in the EU, and 56% of those who do have work only have temporary contracts compared to the EU
average of 32%. The EU keeps instructing Spain that they have to ensure that more young people have permanent contracts. A recent survey states that 53% of persons aged 25-29 still live in the family home, and 25% of those aged 30-35. This means that renting a property is difficult and obtaining a mortgage is out of the question. A survey of wages for young people and the amount of their income needed for paying a mortgage is that this needs 60% of their income and 80% for renting, as renting a property costs more than a mortgage in most cases. A guideline for mortgage holders is that the monthly amount they pay is no more than 33% of their income. There are proposals from political parties that regulations have to be introduced to minimise temporary contracts as this is the only way that the vicious cycle for young people can be broken. The minimum wage for a 40hr week was recently increased to 900 Euros a month, so this does help a bit,
Good Passenger Numbers to Seville The rail journey from Almería to Seville which is the capital city in Andalucía involves two trains and two buses at present whilst electrification work is under way for the arrival of the ‘AVE’ (high speed train) in Granada. There are frequent breakdowns involving the train journeys and there were 30 “incidents” in just 7 days at the end of May! The road journey is better than it used to be but it still takes 4 hours. In 2009 the Junta de Andalucía obtained permission from the Spanish Aviation Authority to offer subsidised flights from Almería to Seville on the grounds they were needed as a public service. Passenger numbers on these flights went up 6% in the first quarter of 2019 with 9,314 passengers which was 68% total occupancy of all the available seats on 272 flights. In March, 3,411 passengers used the planes that were then 71% full. The airline company Air Nostrum, the low-cost operator owned by Iberia, was given another four year contract last summer after a successful bid of 8.8 million Euros. The airline has to offer outward and return journeys that enable people to spend the working day in Seville or Almería with two daily flights in the week and one on Sundays. The cost of the 1hr 15mins journey starts at 55 Euros for pre-booked flights.

So Now You Know... The Largest Airplane The Russian Antonov An-225 “Mrya” (dream) was designed in 1985 to carry the Buran space shuttle, similar to the US shuttle transporter planes, and carry large jet engines inside the body. It has the largest wingspan of any aircraft and the take-off weight is 640 tonnes powered by six very large turbo-fan engines. It first flew in December 1988 on an initial flight of 74km from Kiev but the Buran space shuttle was never launched into orbit. It was taken to the Paris Air Show in 1989 but it was parked on the tarmac and didn’t make any flights. It was mothballed for eight years when it was modified to become a high-load cargo plane. Flat Screen TVs The first flat screen TV was invented in July 1964 by a team at the University of Illinois. At the time, the computers in the Science Faculty were built using regular computer monitors that had CRT (Cathode ray tubes). These relied on technology that was inefficient for computer graphics. To address this problem, professors Donald Bitzer and Gene Slottow created a flat screen television that emitted light using plasma technology. In , Sharp and Sony introduced the first commercial large flat screen TV using the PALC technology. It had a screen that was 42ins from corner to corner and was the largest TV ever produced. Using Containers for Transport Malcolm Purcell McLean was an American businessman and transport entrepreneur who developed the modern intermodal shipping container in 1956. He was not involved in shipping goods by sea but he owned the fifth largest trucking company in the US. These revolutionised transport and international trade as containerisation led to a significant reduction in the cost of freight transportation by eliminating the need for repeated handling of individual pieces of cargo. They also improved reliability, reduced cargo theft, and cut inventory costs. Initially there was no standard size but then an international size was adopted worldwide.

The World’s Oldest Tortoise The tortoise Jonathon that lives on the island of St Helena, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean, is definitely the oldest living tortoise. He belongs to the Seychelles giant tortoise species and he was a present to the British governor at Jamestown in 1882. It is considered that a claim that he was hatched in 1832 is reliable. Described as being “fully mature” when he was given to the governor this also indicates that he had then reached the age of fifty. He is blind from cataracts and has some difficulty eating unless food is put right in front of him. Apart from this, a vet recently gave him a clean bill of health. The Metric System of Measurement The metric system was first introduced in Paris in 1799 during the French Revolution when the existing system was replaced by weight in kilograms and length in metres. It later became used for liquid and speed. The metric units are based on decimal groups (multiples of ten) and moving the decimal point gives a reduction or increase by a 10th. It is commonly referred to as the ‘International System of Units’ and is now used by virtually all countries in the world. The imperial system is still in place in the US that is one of only three countries that have not adopted the metric system. In Canada they have used the metric system for some time. The Five Largest Oceans The Pacific Ocean is by far the largest one and it extends to 166 million sq. km which is 64 million sq. miles. It is almost twice as big as the Atlantic Ocean that is 86 million sq. km and 33 million sq. miles. The Indian Ocean is the next largest at 73 million sq. km and 28 million sq. miles. The fourth largest Southern Ocean was created in 2000 by the International Hydro-Graphic Organization and is made up of the southern parts of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans and it completely surrounds Antarctica. It is 20 million sq. km which is 8 million sq. miles. The Arctic Ocean is the fifth largest and extends to 13 million sq. km and 5 million sq.miles.

Having a Stroke
O
n May 10th, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, a very famous Spanish politician died, aged 67, after suffering a stroke (in Spanish “un ictus”). This is a medical emergency involving the blood supply in the brain and the word stroke comes from the Greek word “Apoplexy” that means being struck down. For centuries, the very sudden appearance of a stroke was described as being struck down by God.
and heavy drinking is very important as heavy drinking makes a stroke three times more likely. People suffering from type 1 and type 2 diabetes should be particularly careful that they are eating correctly, taking medication, and minimising the problems. Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is blocked or restricted which stops or reduces the flow of oxygen and nutrients that can cause brain cells to die. A common cause is a hardening of the arteries when plaque made up of fat and cholesterol leaves insufficient space for the blood to flow. In this scenario, if a stroke results this is called an ischemic stroke. If on the other hand some blood vessels in the brain break, this is a haemorrhagic stroke. A stroke is completely If a person has a stroke there are various distinct from a heart attack and has no relationship symptoms that indicate this including a drop in as it is an event in the brain one side of the face, trouble speaking with an inability to form the correct words, or not A stroke can often lead to death or incapacity, understanding what is being said. ETA Terrorist Captured in France
E
TA stands for Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (Basque Homeland and Freedom) and in a news item we comment on the death of Alfredo Rubalcaba, the Spanish politician who is well known for his attempts to wipe out the terrorist group and pursue members that were in hiding.
particularly from Spain. A French police spokesperson stated that he had been arrested leaving home for a hospital appointment. Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, tweeted his congratulations to the joint police force that made the arrest and promised his continuing support to all the families of victims.
Many of them were in France, and Alfredo Rubalcaba forged stronger links with the French police who shared information with Spain and undertook joint operations. He was also very determined to keep in touch with the families of victims killed by ETA and continued to do this even after he had retired. In all, the group killed 853 people over four decades, most of them during the 1980s. ETA injured more than 2,600 people, kidnapped 86 and threatened hundreds more as a way of collecting funds by extortion. At least 358 crimes that are laid at the doors of ETA are still unresolved, so investigations in France and Spain have never stopped. There are nearly 300 imprisoned ETA militants with the vast majority in Spain, but others are in prison in France and an assortment of other countries.
The arrest of José Antonio Urrutikoetxea
When Spain was in the process of changing from the dictatorship of General Franco into a democracy, ETA assassinated the dictator’s anointed successor, Prime Minister Luis Carrero Blanco, in 1973. In France they killed a member of the French Gendarme Police when members were pursued and stopped by French police at a roadside checkpoint. On May 16th, members of the French ‘Direction Générale de Français Sécurité Intérieure’ (DGFSI) and Spanish Guardia Civil police mounted an operation in the French Alps that led to the arrest of José Antonio Urrutikoetxea alias Josu Ternera. Now aged 68 he was the political boss of ETA and considered one of the most important senior members, and he has been in hiding for 17 years. An arrest warrant is in place in France so he was taken to a French prison as he had been convicted of belonging to a terrorist group and sentenced to eight years, but many more charges will follow
The joint operation was given the code name “Infancia robada” (Stolen childhood) in reference to the ETA bomb detonated at the domestic barracks of the Guardia Civil police in Zaragoza in 1987 when 11 people were assassinated including six children. At the time of the attack, Josu Ternera claimed responsibility on behalf of ETA and was considered to have planned the operation. He escaped from custody in Spain in May 2002 just before he was due to appear in court regarding the Zaragoza attack and his whereabouts then became unknown. At various stages starting in 2017 members of ETA revealed the existence of buried arms dumps and forged documentation as part of a ceasefire and disbanding stage. All these were treated as being crime scenes and everything was examined and catalogued by forensic police. Last year, with a heavy police escort, many of the items were sent to police in Madrid to help further enquiries. The escort ensured that the “chain of custody” was intact and any findings would stand up in future court cases. Following a raid on a major arms dealer in France ETA obtained a large amount of weapons and many of these are still unaccounted for.

Statistics in Andalucía
F
igures from the Institute of Statistics in Andalucía, the National Institute of Statistics, and Eurostat in Brussels have been collated to show trends in Andalucía (which includes Almería province) in the last decades. Andalucía is the second largest autonomous community in Spain in terms of area, and the most populated one with 8.4 million registered inhabitants that make up 18% of all the Spanish population. In 1988 the percentage of non-Spanish residents was only 0.7% but this grew to 1.4% in 1998 and then peaked at 7.6% in 2008. Following the construction and financial crises when some people moved away (particularly Brits), the percentage is now down to 7.4%.
and were living on their own. This rose to 25% in 2011 and has continued to grow. The only fly in the ointment (that we comment on in our ‘In the News’ section) is that at present, 53% of persons aged 25-29 still live in the family home and 25% of those aged 30-35. The main reason for this is unemployment that this Easter in Almería province fell by 9,000 to 57,000. The fall in numbers has continued since the first quarter in 2018 when the total number of unemployed persons in our province was 81,600. In terms of percentages in Almería province, this has now come down to 16% that is very close to the national average of 15%, and is far better than the 24% at the beginning of 2018.
In 1978 the average life expectancy of men and women was 74, which went up to 77.6 in 1997, and then 79.6 in 2007. The latest recorded figures from the end of 2017 show that life expectancy has grown to 81 years which is a general trend in Spain. In 1996 people in Andalucía got married at the age of 27 but by 2016 this showed an increase to 32.5 years. A main reason is the increasing employment of women who put off getting married and having children whilst they have a career. There were only 13,500 divorces and legal separations in 1997 but this went up to 20,500 in 2017. In 1991 some 6% of the population were illiterate but this fell to 4% in 2001 and then down to 2.5% in 2011. Only 10% of the population had been to university and obtained a degree in 1996 but this percentage rose to 13% in 2006 and then 29% in 2016. Nowadays it is not guaranteed that people with university degrees obtain work that is commensurate with their educational achievement or even that they find any job at all! Figures suggest that this is improving except that many young qualified persons in Spain have gone abroad to find suitable work.
Andalucía
In 1997 there were 438 cars in Andalucía per 1,000 head of population and this rose to 637 in 2007 and then 674 in 2017. This is not a large increase in numbers from 2007-2017 but once again, the construction and financial crises slowed down the number of purchases. As regards property, in 1997 the average cost per m2 was 513 Euros that increased to 1,739 Euros per m2 in 2007 at the height of the property boom. This went down to 1,232 Euros at the end of 2017, but in our immediate area where there is a demand to buy Living in the family home was more usual in 1991, property by non-Spanish people the value of and only 11% of the population had moved out property is better.

Logging Working Hours
S
pain sometimes puts legislation in place that appears to have been rushed through and needs considerable explanation as to the purpose and implementation. This certainly applies to a new regulation that requires employers to log the working hours of their employees. Pedro Sánchez, the Socialist Prime Minister, passed the legislation on March 8th but shortly afterwards dissolved parliament and called new General Elections. The new regulations came into force on May 12th which was in fact a Sunday when 95% of the working population was at home! The period from March 8thwas supposed to give employers A modern method of recording work time time to put the regulations in force but there is considerable confusion from small to large 95% of small companies have less than five workers, companies as to how this works and what they but the register is needed even if there is only one employee. In paid for working time that really counts as overtime. theory, a worker has to sign the attendance record Figures for Spain are that workers put in 2.6 million and hours worked every day but in practice once hours every day that should be overtime but is not a week will probably be enough. The clarification remunerated. To establish whether work done is on May 13th was that people such as sales reps part of a normal contract with specified hours, or working away from a company have to provide work over and above this, employers have to keep details of hours worked that are given to their a daily register for each employee. He asks if the On May 13th the Spanish Ministry of Labour working day of a sales rep starts when they leave published some general guidelines but with various their house to drive to their first customer? The still unexplained matters, and many companies construction company Grupo Ortiz states that didn’t start compiling any registers, but the fine workers on their large construction projects go for not doing this ranges from 625 Euros up to directly to where they are working, not an office. 6,250 Euros. The acting Spanish Minister for Work, They ask if a site manager now has to instruct all Magdalena Valerio, then stated that there could be their workers to come and sign in when they start an interim period whilst employers worked out how or leave work? They think they are “going back ten to implement the regulations and inspectors who years in time” if they have to do this. There are still will enforce the regulations would be “sympathetic”! numerous unanswered questions at present!

APSA Fashion Show What a beautiful day it was and, thanks to all the lovely people who came, the Fashion Show was a success! APSA would like to say a big thank-you to everyone who supported the event! Sally Miller, the organiser put weeks of work into this event and thanked Beatriz and the team at the Tennis Club Albox who provided the glorious venue for this sellout event. The master of ceremonies was Terry Le Gassick, and Ian Moir, Anne Moir and Marie Fletcher provided the live entertainment. The models all looked wonderful, Mags Vaughan, Ella Dring, Gerry Hayward, Geraldine Day, Chrissie Hamilton-Stewart, Wendy Brennan, Jude Longbottom, Marie Fletcher and Sharon O’Hanlon. The helping hands backstage were Carole Donahughe, Gail Hill, Lesley O’Connell and Trish Le Gassick with Hilary Shand and Margaret Ridyard running the raffle and clothes stall. Also not to forget, Bob Pratt the car park attendant! An amazing 1,600 Euros has been raised to support animals in need. Sally was delighted as the money is very much needed to support food and vet bills.
raised a record 1,518 Euros after expenses which will being used to support the 3 dance groups, the travel costs of an unwell girl who needs to go to Barcelona, and the Villaricos school. After a late start we had children's games of egg & spoon and musical chairs organised by AMPA -the parent's association. This was followed by a spectacular display of Hip-Hop dancing by the Escuela de Baile team 'La Ultimate Fusion' from Garrucha led by Natalia Lopez. Racing began with smaller children and the annual Teachers v Parents ending in a 1metre win for the Parents, a reverse from last year. There were also dancing displays from the Flamenco school - 'A Contratiempo' - led by María, and the village's own Pena Fantasia. Music was skilfully provided by Bill & Mason, a new DJ team following the sad death of our stalwart DJ Ian the Legend. Volunteers from the UK and Sweden and locals arranged track markings, road closures, and equipment storage and helped to clear up. We are delighted that the efforts put in by the team and all those who supported the day made it a memorable day for audience and participants. There are 4 unclaimed raffle prizes including a one week stay in a 2-bed apartment in Villaricos with a full list at Bar La Plaza. Prizes unclaimed after June 30th will be sold in a silent auction. The 2020 races are on April 25thand we will need to involve more organisers. If you are interested contact Ian Watson: 634 368 243.

Charlie Jack Books Local author David Stringer decided to concentrate on his considerable talents as a cartoonist and writer and illustrator of children’s books when he retired from a working life as an engineer. His book “Charlie Jack” that he has written and illustrated tells the story of a disabled, cute, mischievous puppy adopted from an animal shelter with wheels for his back legs, and the 9 year old girl Georgi who becomes his trainer and best friend. They both experience different challenges and adventures whilst growing up. David has five children and eleven grandchildren so he should know what stories children enjoy! David’s idea is to create a feeling of understating and acceptance for disability. A series of stories lead on to a wonderful finale. “Charlie Jack” is available from Amazon, Waterstone’s, Barnes & Noble and Olympia Publishing websites. We will be featuring David’s cartoons on our Jokes pages. Useful information website for older and vulnerable British people living in Spain The British Consulate and the University of Birmingham have compiled a support website for older and more vulnerable British residents. The website, Support in Spain (www.supportinspain.info), contains useful information on how to get extra support and help on a wide range of topics, such as health care, disabled services and benefits, as well as a directory of local support organisations including
It is quite amazing that 30 years have passed since PAWS-PATAS was founded and that this animal charity has managed to continue raising money via their fundraising outlets and various events; quizzes, plays, fashion shows, raffles, choirs and New Year’s Day swimming in the sea! We desperately need more volunteers to help us keep this wheel turning... to date we have re-homed over 7,000 dogs and 3,000 cats but we need more hands and minds to help in various areas. Not only will you be helping abandoned and neglected animals but will also have the opportunity of making new friends and receiving a great deal of satisfaction for the help you can offer. We need assistance at the shelter with the dogs and the cats, walking the dogs or playing with the kittens to socialise them and fostering animals until we find them a forever home. You can get involved in one of our fundraising outlets or with event organisation, DIY, driving locally to collect overseas volunteers from the airport and bus station (expenses reimbursed). Some of our administration work can be done from home as we can connect you to our system. Put your skills and talents to good use and gain from the camaraderie of working as part of a team and making new friends at the same time. For further information - please visit our website www.paws-patas.org and complete a form online or email: info@paws-atas.org or pop into one of our outlets and leave your details. STOP PRESS.....if you are buying new garden furniture/parasols and the old stuff still has some life left - please donate them to the shelter. Contact Chrissie on 634 349 638 who will arrange to collect.

Dames in Turre raise 1,200 Euros for Equinac Dames in Turre were delighted to welcome back Alex Lawson and Adele Land from Equinac at their April meeting. They gave a most gripping talk with videos projecting their dedication and concern for the rescue and rehabilitation of Marine Life which shone through the entire meeting. They are on call 24/7 and depend on donations to carry out their valuable work. Dames were thrilled to present them with a cheque for 1,200 Euros with which they have purchased a new sand filter for the rehabilitation pools, and a lot of new tubing and parts that were desperately needed to keep the pools clean for the Turtles. Alex and Adele were pleased to answer any questions that the Dames asked and we hope they will return again next year.

Jokes of the Month Newspapers
The Bank Robber
I asked my daughter if she had seen my newspaper. She replied that newspapers are old school and everybody uses tablets nowadays instead, and she handed me her iPad. The fly didn’t stand a chance but the iPad has got to be repaired!
An armed hooded robber bursts into a bank and forces the tellers to load a sack full of cash. On his way out the door one brave customer grabs the hood and pulls it off revealing the robber's face. The robber shoots the man without hesitation. He then looks around the bank to see if anyone else has seen him. One of the tellers is looking straight at him and the robber walks over and calmly shoots him dead. Everyone by now is very scared and looking down at the floor. "Did anyone else see my face?" screams the robber. There are a few moments of silence then one elderly gent, looking down, tentatively raises his hand and says, "I think my wife standing next to me may have caught a glimpse of your face."
The Doorbell A priest is walking down the street one day when he notices a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a house across the street. However, the boy is very small and the doorbell is too high for him to reach. After watching the boy's efforts for some time, the priest steps smartly across the street, walks up behind the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child's shoulder leans over and gives the doorbell a sold ring. Crouching down to the child's level, the priest smiles benevolently and asks, "And now what, my little man?" To which the boy replies, "Now we run. The dog they have is enormous!" The Shoes A blonde was on vacation in the depths of Louisiana. She wanted a pair of genuine alligator shoes, but didn't want to pay the high prices. After unsuccessfully haggling with one of the shopkeepers, the blonde said, "Maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator, so I can get a pair of shoes at a reasonable price." Later in the day, the shopkeeper spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the water, shotgun in hand. She took aim at an alligator, killed it, and hauled it onto the swamp bank. Lying nearby were several more dead alligators. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blonde flipped the alligator on its back and shouted in frustration, "Damn, this one isn't wearing any shoes either."

The Taxi Ride Three drunks lurch into a taxi and the driver could see they were all well past it. He started the engine, counted to five and then switched it off again. He told the drunks, “This is where you asked me to take you, and the fare is twenty dollars!” One of the drunks manages to find some money and as the second drunk was getting out he slurred “Thanks mate” and gave the driver a tip! The third drunk leant over and punched the taxi driver. He was amazed that this drunk knew what he had done but he asked, “What was that for?” The third drunk replied, “Don’t drive so fast next time, you could have killed us!”
Stormy Daniels Donald Trump’s trouble with Stormy Daniels all started after his personal lawyer paid the porn star $130,000. The payment was flagged as suspicious by banking authorities and reported to the Democrats. It was deemed suspicious, because someone actually and finally got paid as promised by Donald Trump.
...and next... The Blonde Passenger
There is a God An elderly lady was well-known for her Christian faith and for her boldness in talking about it. She would stand on her front porch and shout "PRAISE THE LORD!" Next door to her lived an atheist who would get so angry at her proclamations he would shout, "There ain't no Lord!!" Hard times set in for the elderly lady and she prayed for GOD to send her some assistance. She stood on her porch and shouted "PRAISE THE LORD. GOD, I NEED FOOD!! I AM HAVING A HARD TIME. PLEASE LORD, SEND ME SOME GROCERIES!!"The next morning the lady went out on her porch and noted a large bag of groceries and shouted, "PRAISE THE LORD." The neighbour jumped from behind a bush and said, "Aha! I told you there was no Lord. I bought those groceries, God didn't." The lady started jumping up and down and clapping her hands and said, "PRAISE THE LORD. He not only sent me groceries, but He made the devil pay for them. PRAISE THE LORD!"
There's this blonde. She gets on a plane and sits in the first available seat and the flight attendant is coming around checking tickets. She looks at the blonde woman's ticket and tells the blonde, "Ma'am you can't sit here, your ticket says coach and this is first class. Please move to the back of the plane". The blonde replies, "I'm a blonde, I'm smart and have a good job. I'm not moving until the plane arrives in Jamaica". So the flight attendant, now hot under the collar goes to another flight attendant and tells him what happened. He goes up to her and asks her to move to the back of the plane. She then responds, "I'm a blonde, I'm smart and have a good job. I'm not moving until the plane arrives in Jamaica". So the two flight attendants are steaming mad and they go to the co-pilot and tell him what is going on. He comes back to where the blonde is sitting and leans over and whispers something in her ear. The two flight attendants were astonished when the blonde abruptly got up from her seat and moved to the back of the plane. They looked at each other and then the co-pilot and asked him what he told her. The co-pilot, feeling good about himself told them, "Oh, I just told her that the front half of the plane wasn't going to Jamaica".

Trump and the Pope The Pope and Donald Trump are on stage in front of a huge crowd. The Pope leaned towards Trump and said, “Do you know that with one little wave of my hand I can make every person in this crowd go wild with joy, far more than you can? This joy will not be a momentary display, like that of your followers, but go deep into their hearts and for the rest of their lives whenever they speak of this day, they will rejoice!" Trump replies, “I seriously doubt that. With only one little wave of your hand? Show me!” So the Pope slapped him.
