Slow Progress

V

accinations against COVID-19 in Spain continue, but there have been severe delays with obtaining a sufficient number of doses. Spain relies on the EU for the delivery of vaccines and there are major problems. Orders for the AstraZenica vaccine were for 100 million doses by the end of March and 300 million by the end of June. In the first quarter only 30 million were delivered and AstraZenica are only promising 70-80 million in the second quarter. The EU is considering taking the manufacturer to court to try and force them to make more vaccines available.

In an article we comment on plans within Spain to convert to “green energy”. A new scheme, “Plan Moves III”, has been unveiled with subsidies for the purchase of electric vehicles and charging points. Cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, so Almería city, El Ejido and Roquetas de Mar in our province, will have to introduce some restrictions on high emission vehicles in their city centres by 2023. In very large cities, this has been done with a blanket ban on these vehicles entering a certain area (except for residents), or at certain times of the day.

The pause in the AstraZenica and Janssen vaccinations whilst the situation relating to blood clots was investigated has not helped, and at time of going to press only 22% of people in Spain had received the first dose and only 9% had the second dose or the Janssen single dose vaccine. The Health Department in Andalucía (that governs Almería province) have contacted the manufacturers of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine to see if they can make their own purchase, but as yet it is not approved within the EU. Delays in the number of people who are vaccinated could affect the opening up of Spain for major numbers of tourists which is now a real worry. “Vaccine certificates” may help but if Spain has not managed to get 70% of the population vaccinated by the end of August, now slid to sometime during September, there will not be herd immunity within Spain. Cultural events are still very sparse and at the time of going to press the other two health districts in our province remain on level 4 which restricts inside audience numbers to 50% capacity, worse than previously. The “Cooltural Go” open-air live concert schedule in Almería city has started, but with a maximum of 100 spectators for their first concert. In our “In the News” section we comment on the possibility that the three main music festivals in August, including Dreambeach Villaricos, are under the threat of having to be cancelled for the second year running.

The month of May is the time when Roman Catholic children have their first communion ceremony with a party afterwards for family and friends that can involve a large number of guests. In most dioceses these celebrations are being postponed to September. During May, the enormous ‘Fitur’ tourist fair will take place in Madrid, postponed from January with the very strict regulations. We comment on this in our “In the News” section. It is hoped that this will help give a boost to summer tourism. Saturday, May 15th is a major fiesta in Madrid to celebrate the Spanish Saint Isidro, a farmer who is said to have helped large numbers of poor people in about the year 1172. Mojácar (on the Sunday) and other towns and villages would normally celebrate this, with decorated farm vehicles going into the countryside known as a “Romeria”.

In the News Heath Districts in Almería Province There are three health districts in Almería province and the locations where vaccinations are being given vary according to the district. The one that applies to the vast majority of municipalities in our area, and comprises 41 municipalities, is the Distrito Sanitario Levante Alto-Almanzora which is the northern area with the Inmaculada hospital in Huércal-Overa. The second one is the Distrito Sanitario de Almería that includes Almería city and central areas of the province with 43 municipalities including Sorbas, Lubrin and Tabernas and the Torrecárdenas hospital in Almería city. People living in these municipalities have been asked to go to Almería city in some cases for their vaccinations. The third district is the southern Distrito Sanitario Poniente de Almería that includes El Ejido and Roquetas de Mar and the Poniente hospital, with no municipalities near to our area.

million doses by June. On April 20th the European Medical Agency (EMA) lifted the temporary suspension without any recommendation that it should not be given to particular sectors of the population, and vaccinations started on April 21st. In Spain it was initially given to the age group 6069. To speed up the first dose of vaccinations the Spanish health authorities have been debating whether to double the period between the Pfizer and Moderna first and second doses. This would mean the Pfizer second dose would be given after 42 days and the Moderna one after 56 days. The EMA then advised Spain that the original time period of 21 and 28 days should be followed. A final question in the EU, without any answer at present, is whether the second dose can be a different type to the first one. Opinion and tests in the UK are that this can be beneficial and increases the total immunity.

More Vaccination News The regulations and procedure for obtaining the COVID-19 vaccinations have been constantly amended in recent weeks. There are national guidelines, but in Almería province it is the Health Department of the Junta de Andalucía who determine their own regulations. Last month we stated that when a vaccination was being given a card would be provided with the date of the second vaccination and vaccine details. Andalucía chose not to do this and we are sorry if this caused any confusion for our readers. There have been various decisions and temporary suspensions regarding the AstraZenica vaccine and eventually it was finally approved in Spain for people aged 60-65 initially, and then the age group 66-69 too. The advantage of the AstraZenica vaccine for health authorities (apart from the low cost) is the period of about 12 weeks before the second one is due. The first 150,000 doses of the Johnson & Johnson / Janssen vaccine (which is a ‘one-time-only’ vaccine) to come to Spain were kept in storage whilst a US and EU investigation into some reports of blood clotting amongst women was completed. It is intended to be given to the age group 70-79 who have not already been vaccinated, and Spain is expecting 5

A New AVE and Tortoise Row The construction company SACYR have been given the contract to build the AVE (High speed train) section from Pulpí to Vera, and work has been underway for some time with a budget cost of 154 million euros. In April the company asked that the contract was declared null and void because of the lack of expropriation of land. A large area of land in Cuevas that is needed for the AVE is the natural habitat of the ‘Tortuga Mora’ tortoise that is a protected species. There have been discussions for years relating to where these tortoises would be relocated. The first suggestion involved the demolition of some residential homes and agricultural buildings and the second site involved the expropriation of fertile agricultural land. Finally, after a study by Almería University a third location was agreed and this is the land where SACYR say that the expropriation has not been done and the 200 owners of the land are raising objections. The rail company ADIF state that the expropriation will be completed “very soon” and there is no need to tear up the contract and that the company are using this as an excuse to stop work. In 2018, SACYR obtained the contract to build the 12km line from Pulpí to Cuevas but they pulled out of this contract

More Bank Fusions The CaixaBank has now fused with Bankia that was bailed out by the Spanish government in 2012 and the new bank has become the largest in Spain with 20 million customers. The government have a share stake for the remaining money that was injected into Bankia that has not yet been recouped. A closure of 1,500 branches has been put forward with the loss of 8,000 employees, but bank unions have described this as “savage”. Unicaja and Lieberbank are also to fuse subject to the approval of the financial regulators, which is expected in July. The fusion will have 4.5 million customers in six autonomous communities, and the headquarters will be in Málaga. It is expected that 1,000-2,000 employees will be encouraged to take early retirement, and the combined operations are expected to save 192 million euros annually in operating costs. A New Spanish Vaccine The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, recently travelled to Barcelona to meet up with scientists from the pharmaceutical company ‘Hipra’ based in Girona. They are currently in trials with a new COVID19 vaccine that would be made in Spain, and it is intended that the clinical trials in humans can start in May or June. This company is the seventh largest in the world for the production of vaccines for animals and has patented 22 in the last 10 years that are distributed in over 100 countries. Their new vaccine is similar to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine but has no special low-temperature storage requirement. They intend to go into production in October with a capacity to supply 400 million doses in 2022 and 1.2 billion in 2023, and their present number of 2,000 employees will be substantially increased. A company spokesperson stated that in trials in rats their vaccine was 100% effective. Health bodies in many countries consider that in all likelihood a booster vaccination will be needed, possibly at regular intervals.

Juan Roig

Mercadona Still Forging Ahead Juan Roig is the head of the Roig family who own Mercadona and the day-to-day C.E.O. He rarely gives press conferences except for the publishing of the annual accounts that took place during April. In 2020 the supermarket sold products worth 27 billion euros and made a profit of 727 million euros. Both of these are record amounts and the profit was 17% more than in 2019. A further 5,000 people were employed during 2020 taking the number in Spain up to 93,300 and 1,700 in Portugal. Their share of the market fell 0.5% down to 26.4%, which is considered to be because there were fewer tourists, but their market share is streets in front of any other supermarket chain. The company spent 1.5 billion euros in 2020 on the complete modernisation of their stores that now total 1,000, with a planned 200 more per annum until 2024. Juan Roig announced that Mercadona was not going to take part in any price war, but they were at war to increase the quality of their goods and were continually looking for high quality producers and manufacturers to add to their core list of 1,400. Fears for Summer Tourists The vaccination process in Spain and Andalucía is slower that had been anticipated and there are fears that this will affect summer tourists. The

In the News Junta de Andalucía is hoping that 50% of the adult population is vaccinated by the end of June, but figures from the Spanish National Health Service suggest this may not be achieved until “sometime” during July. Central government have a target of 70% of adults being vaccinated by the end of August, but there are fears that this may slide to September. If the rate of vaccination falls behind, the “herd immunity” will not be achieved, and this may well affect tourism with a marked decrease in numbers. A representative for the Andalucía Health Authority has had exploratory talks with the Russian manufacturer of the Sputnik V vaccine for possible purchases, if the promised doses from other manufacturers distributed by the EU suffer further delays. At present, the Russian vaccine is in use in 60 countries but not yet approved for use in the EU.

work very long unpaid hours, particularly in the tourist season. Since April 14th, employers have to keep a new register that shows the average pay of male and female employees and the salary, including perks and extras, for the bosses. This will apply to an estimated 1.5 million employers and it still applies if there are only one or two employees. The object of the register is designed to highlight the differences in wages paid to male and female employees. The Spanish Ministry of Work have published an on-line form that can be downloaded, and an employer with 50 employees should not have a difference in the wage bill for women that is 25% less than for men. (It also applies if men earn less than women). If the 25% limit is found to have been exceeded when an inspection takes place, this will have to be justified with fines for non-compliance of keeping the register starting at 6,000 euros.

‘Cooltural Go’ Festival Whether the August ‘Cooltural Fest’ live music event held in Almería city will take place this year is still unknown, and we comment on this in an article. Concerts for a smaller audience, that were inaugurated last year, are called ‘Cooltural Go’ and 50 events are intended to take place until the end of September. The first one took place in mid-April with an audience of 100 who had to purchase tickets in advance for the open-air event, with plastic chairs observing social distancing regulations. This featured the Travis Birds duo and was billed as a “Secret Show”. A novel feature was that the location and performers were not revealed until 24hrs before the concert! It is intended that audience numbers will increase as the lockdown allows this, and all events will be in the open-air.

New ‘FITUR’ Event in May The enormous annual ‘FITUR’ tourist event takes place every January in the large ‘IFEMA’ pavilion in Madrid. It was abandoned this year with a new date of May 19th- 23rd and a scaling down in numbers. The “Costa de Almería” initiative /road show forms part of the Andalucía stand and the tourist authorities in Almería are intending to go there. There are sub-divisions of the Almería part of the stand for tourist board representatives from places such as Mojácar. Usually, the first day is for professional visitors only, but this year this will apply to the first three days. At the weekend, members of the public can attend the event. There will be strict precautions such as a prior negative test for COVID-19, the strict wearing of masks, social distancing, maximum numbers at a stand, and a reduced time period of a maximum of 30 minutes for a “show”. The stand for Andalucía normally features a flamenco event. It is hoped that attendance will help to stimulate the return of tourists to Spain this summer. The 2020 event received 261,000 visitors of which 150,000 were professionals from 65 countries.

A New Wages Register Last year employers were obliged to keep a register of hours worked by their employees, designed to show the amount of paid overtime they had worked. In some cases, although it is completely illegal, employees had to agree to a fictitious number of hours with a threat of being dismissed if they objected. This was particularly prevalent in the bar Mojácar Roads Get A Face-Lift and restaurant sector where employees consistently The Almería Diputación (County council) in Almería

In the News are giving Mojácar a grant of 477,000 euros to be spent on the improvement of 20 roads on Mojácar playa. They have been split into 10 zones and some of them will be tarmacked, vegetation will be removed, parking areas will be better marked out, kerbs modified and sewer covers and pipework replaced or modified where necessary. A spokesperson from Mojácar council stated that these will be improvements that benefit residents and tourists alike, and will contribute to the attraction and safety of Mojácar playa. New Vehicle Subsidies The Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition has announced new incentive schemes for the purchase of purely electric vehicles as well as hybrid ones. The scheme is called ‘Plan Moves III’ and for electric vehicles there is a sliding subsidy (depending on the range before charging) of up to 7,000 euros when a vehicle over 7 years old is scrapped. If this does not apply the subsidy is fixed at a maximum of 4,500 euros. For hybrid plug-in vehicles the relevant limits are up to 5,000 euros, and 2,500 euros if an old car is not scrapped. The top price of any vehicle purchased is 45,000 euros plus IVA (VAT) at 21% so a retail price of up to 54,400 euros. The scheme has an initial funding of 400 million euros to be extended to 800 million, and the end date is given as the end of 2022 assuming the money does not run out. If it does, the subsidies may be extended. The scheme started on April 10th and includes vehicles registered by dealers less than 9 months ago. Teresa Rivera, the relevant Minister, intends that by 2023 there will be 250,000 purely electric vehicles in Spain. Another target is that after 2030 no new vehicles sold will be solely petrol or diesel fuelled and this will save 450,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. A 70% subsidy of the cost of installing a charging point is part of this package, and 80% in municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants. The Spanish automobile industry has welcomed these subsidies but point out that the average likely purchaser will not be currently driving a car that is older than 7 years, so the higher amount for scrapping a car will not apply. In similar schemes over the past few years the Spanish Tax

Authority (Hacienda) has ruled that these types of subsidies are a “hidden income” that is taxable!

More Tolls on Motorways? The EU is intending to give Spain 140 billion euros from 2021-2026 subject to various conditions and initiatives. Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, is suggesting that tolls are introduced on all major motorways as a way of covering the 8 billion euros that are spent every year on repairs and conservation and provide additional income. Setting up the toll infrastructure is not going to be cheap, and there is a proposal that there would be no money payable by vehicles that belong to industry. Whether this will meet with approval from the EU and the Spanish Parliament, and is cost effective, remains to be seen. Where toll roads exist, this puts more traffic on conventional roads where drivers avoid having to pay. Unidentified Bodies Unfortunately, there are often tragic shipwrecks that cost the lives of illegal immigrants trying to reach Spain in grossly overloaded small boats and inflatables. In early April three bodies including a young girl were washed up on Mojácar beaches following a shipwreck off the coast of Murcia. Spanish figures for 2010-2020 show that in all of Spain there were 1,316 bodies found in international or Spanish territorial waters or on beaches. Only 19 of the 103 drowned persons in Almería province could be identified, and the remaining 84 are people whose identity is completely unknown. Boat people who are rescued are sometimes able to give the names of people who have drowned but in the majority of cases they have no idea who was travelling with them. Taking a DNI sample during an autopsy is unlikely to help with identification as invariably a DNI sample has never been taken in their country of origin. New Mojácar Medical Centre Mojácar town hall have approved a joint scheme with Andalucía Health Authority for the provision of a new health centre, to be sited near to the petrol station where there are also plans for a bus

Health insurance with and without copayments advanced diagnostic tests normally involve a high copayment. Health insurance without copayments Only the insurance premium has to be paid, thus giving peace of mind as no additional payments are requested to have access to the benefits and services guaranteed by the policy. In case the private medical insurance is needed to get the residence permit in Spain, having a policy without copayments is essential, as it is one of the requirements to get it.

It can therefore result in an important increase in the insurance cost. The price of the copayment may vary depending on the medical service and the terms and conditions of the contract. A Major Logistical Problem Wind turbine blades destined for shipping to France and Germany are made by a company in Granada and taken to Almería port. To get them there is a major logistical problem for police and transport operatives as they each measure 50 metres in length. Roads have to be closed, some street furniture and road signs removed, and negotiating roundabouts is a major problem. So far 30 blades have been loaded onto ships at Almería port and nine of them arrived on April 4th, deliberately chosen as it was a Sunday with least road traffic. This was the fifth shipment since last June. At the port two large cranes delicately lifted them onto the cargo ship. Good Almería Port Cargo Figures The number of cargo ships that came to Carboneras and Almería ports during January and February fell from 283 in 2019 down to 162. Nevertheless, this involved shipping 923,000 tonnes which is 56% more than in 2019. The main items moved were yeso (gypsum) and cement and they respectively increased by 113% and 19%. The multinational company Grupo Cosentino from Cantoria ship their products to Valencia and Algeciras on the Maersk and MSC ships for onward travel to Europe and the US. Partly because of this, container traffic in the two months also went up by 21%. The Níjar “Dry Port” The major logistical inter-transport node at Níjar, termed a “dry port”, is being prioritised by the Junta de Andalucía with 40 million euros from the ‘Feder’ EU funding. An opening date for the first phase is given as 2026 that will probably coincide with the arrival of the ‘AVE’ (High speed train). Spread over 500 hectares (two square miles) the dry port will be alongside the A-7 motorway with a link to the AVE, and the Carboneras port is not very far away. The construction phase will provide work for 4,500

New Speed Limits from May 11th The DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) brought in many changes in March that increased fines and sanctions for a number of driving offences. These included speed limits in urban areas. There was an interim period before these came into force designed for motorists to “get used to” the reduced limits (assuming they did actually slow down!), and for speed limit signs to be changed. From May 11th the speed limit on a road without any separation of level for pedestrians is 20km/h. On a road with traffic in both directions on a single carriageway with kerbs, the speed limit is 30km/h and on a dual carriageway 50km/h. Studies show that if a person is hit by a vehicle at 50km/h, 50% of these collisions will be fatal, but at 30km/h the fatality rate falls to 10%. In 2019, 82% of all road deaths in cities and urban areas were from injuries to pedestrians, cyclists and scooter or motorbike drivers. At present, a driver exceeding the speed limit by less than 20km/h in a 20km/h-50Km/h speed limit receives a fine of 100 euros, but no loss of points. Driving from 21km/h to 30km/h above these speed limits

Guardia Civil traffic police have a credit card facility to obtain the 50% discount on the spot. If a motorist causes death or injury harsher penalties will apply.

Palomares Radioactive Soil Plan In January 1966, a US tanker refuelling plane collided with a US B-52 bomber plane over Palomares during the refuelling. The bomber plane had four nuclear missiles that were jettisoned and when two of them hit the ground the nose-cones split open and the surrounding land was contaminated with plutonium dust. 600 US troops with the help of 140 local residents removed about 25,000m3 of contaminated soil that was shipped back to the US in barrels for storage at a site in South Carolina. It was later estimated that there was 50,000m3 of contaminated soil left behind with some of it having been covered over by ploughing and in 2010 the Spanish Nuclear Agency made a study to determine what to do with it. Greenpeace have been pressurising for some concrete plan for many years and dispute the claim in 2015 that a “new study” had shown that only 28,000m3 needed removing. A High Court in Madrid recently ruled that the 2010 study had to be declassified and made available to the court and this has now been done. The plan allows for the contaminated soil to be put in sealed containers in one particular zone. There is nowhere in Spain where radioactive material can be stored, and in 2015 John Kerry, then US Secretary of State, signed a non-legally binding memorandum that the soil would be taken to the US. This has never happened, but he has now been appointed to be the climate-change czar in the new Biden administration and it appears that there may well be some more concrete discussions. Monthly ‘El Algarrobico’ Progress Reports In our December magazine we commented on the almost complete lack of action regarding the 421 bed ‘El Algarrobico’ 95% finished hotel in Carboneras that is supposed to be demolished. This proposed action followed court rulings that it had been built

too near to the sea (a document in Madrid did support a 50m boundary instead of one of 100m) and a ruling that the land was not zoned for urban development, and the building licence from Carboneras town hall should not have been granted. The developer, Azata del Sol, has consistently denied all these claims and vigorously maintain that the building licence and construction was legal in 2003 when work started, before it was stopped in 2006. An agreement for the demolition is that the Spanish state pay for this, with the Junta de Andalucía responsible for clearing the site and restoring it to something like it was before work started. ‘Greenpeace’ have gone to court on numerous occasions to enforce the demolition and the High Court in Madrid decreed that the government, the Junta de Andalucía, and Carboneras town hall have to provide monthly progress reports. What these will achieve remain to be seen! No joint meetings between the government and the Junta have taken place since 2018 and Carboneras town hall refuse to nullify the building licence as this might make them liable for an expensive compensation claim from the developer. A third-party valuation of the hotel when worked stopped was 71 million euros. In mid-February a court in Madrid ruled that Azata del Sol, the promoter, was not entitled to claim this compensation, but an appeal is expected. The hotel has come into the limelight again as the Junta de Andalucía have allocated 1.1 million euros in their 2021 budget to allow for a project study to establish actions needed to clear away the demolition debris and landscaping.

Visiting the UK A British journalist who is the editor of the English version of the Spanish national daily newspaper ‘El País’ has written an article explaining how he got on, and what he had to pay for covid testing to go back to the UK for a 14-day holiday just before Easter. He and his wife have two children aged six and three, and they all have British passports. Before they left for the UK, three of them (including the six-year-old), had to have antigen tests that cost 45 euros each. They needed to have completed UK “Passenger location” forms and have two PCR home testing kits booked and paid for; one on their second

In the News day in the UK and one on the eighth day of their 10-day quarantine. (Gov.uk have a list of companies who do this). All the paperwork was checked at Gatwick and they had to observe the 10-day quarantine with a phone call every day to check they were doing this and the results of the testing. The company they chose for the tests required a video showing all three were doing the nose swabs. Further tests had to be done on day 12 before they travelled back to Spain. In all, they spent 1,400 euros on tests, although they found out afterwards that a cheaper LAMP test was acceptable for Spain on their return. They had to prove a valid reason for flying back (as being residents of Spain), and complete Spain’s passenger location form. The journalist found that all their British passports were exit-stamped in Spain, which isn’t a legal requirement under the withdrawal agreement, and after voicing objections there wasn’t an entry stamp when they returned to Spain. He was told this would be obligatory “in the future”. Despite all these complications they had a good family holiday with the children’s grandparents!

Fluent In English In our immediate part of Almería province, with many resident Brits and tourists from the UK, there are many Spaniards who speak and understand English to a medium or high level of proficiency. This is not true in Spain as a whole, and there is an international annual survey of people who are fluent in English from 100 countries, and 2020 figures for Spain were 2.2 million. Spain therefore ranks as being number 34, the same level as Nigeria. Xavier Martí, the director of the survey states that from 2011-2014 there was a large increase in Spain of people who were fluent in English but the numbers have remained static since then. In Portugal there has been a major increase and they have risen from number 15 to number 7 in only a few years. In the “top ten” there are the Low Countries, Austria, Germany and Belgium. On a scale that goes from 500 in Extremadura (the lowest fluency) up to 573 in Madrid (the highest) Spain comes in at an average of 537, but Andalucía is 6th from the bottom at 530. The average fluency in Europe is 550. Xavier

Martí considers that there has to be a big push in Spain to teach English to a much higher level in schools and universities and courses for adults. He points out that fluency in English is vital for companies and international business and in 85% of job offers in Spain an ability to understand and speak English is a requirement. With the current literacy in Spain this percentage cannot be met.

Making Customers Happy In 2006 Steve Jobs opened his very distinctive flagship 2,000m2 Apple shop in New York’s Fifth Avenue with a large glass cube entrance. The idea was to make customers feel they were experiencing something very special that would help sell his computers. Since then, it has received 57 million people, the same number as the Empire State building and the Statue of Liberty, and is a magnet for tourists. Retail analysts state that to compete with on-line sales, stores have to concentrate on making their premises a “happy” space for clients with things such as generous seating areas, appropriate lighting and neutral wall coverings. The 4,000m2 Zara store in Madrid is a good example and the design uses 20% less electricity consumption in lighting and 40% less water. Banks are being told that they have to stop customers considering that going to a bank is a necessary chore and something to be avoided if possible, with a queue to be served. Interior design consultants consider that banks should provide sofas for waiting customers, and cups of coffee whilst they are seated in front of pleasant employees without any barriers between them. They recommend an abundance of plants and say that expensive lighting is not necessary, but it has to be sympathetic in the colour of the bulbs and placement. Juan Roig, the owner of Mercadona, which is streets in front of other supermarkets, is held up as an example as how stores are being completely revamped and new customers flock through their doors. Employees are encouraged to be helpful and make the shopping experience more personal. Surveys show that customers in these stores buy more products. His proposals for large stores are plants on the exterior and comprehensive roof gardens complete with trees.

In the News A Four-Day Week? Despite all the current economic problems from the pandemic, the Spanish Ministry of Labour is looking at the implementation of a four-day week or 32 hours. One idea is that employers would be paid by the government for the day their existing employees were not working (so employees still receive their normal wages), but many employers would need to increase their workforce by 20% which would give a big boost to employment. When the minimum wage was raised in 2020, employers had to keep worksheets that showed exactly how many hours their employees had worked. This was designed to ensure that hours worked above the normal week were paid as overtime, and employees are entitled to see the work sheets. In practice, many employees particularly in the bars and restaurant sector, have to agree to work long hours without overtime to keep their jobs although this is illegal. With the working from home legislation the whole employment sector has changed, along with the “digital disconnection” time period when employees are not required to respond to phone calls or emails. The autonomous community of Valencia has included 4 million euros in their 2021 budget for employers who adopt the 32-hour week. In summer last year Germany adopted a four-day week and this is in force in some companies in the US, New Zealand, Japan and Switzerland. Many employers consider that productivity with a four-day week increases, and they don’t need to set on additional employees. A Non-legal Gypsy Wedding A case that has been progressing through Spanish courts since 2014 was recently considered by the Spanish High Court in Madrid. Two gypsies in Jaen were married accordingly to gypsy tradition for 15 years and had five children. When the man died in 2014 the woman requested a widow’s pension from the Social Services department and was refused because they had not contracted a marriage that was recognised under Spanish law. This was confirmed by a court in Jaen where the

woman made her first appeal. The Spanish High Court has ruled that the law is quite clear and denying her a pension was not based on ethnic or racial reasons and the couple could have registered themselves as a ‘pareja de hecho’ (a civil partnership that gives the same rights as a marriage). The court also took notice that in the ‘libro de familia’, the Spanish document that records a birth and family ties, on each occasion the couple were registered as being single. Their defence lawyer argued that this was a decision made at the registry and not made by the couple and the woman was illiterate. One of the five High Court judges disagreed with the majority ruling and considered that a traditional ceremony, such as the one they had gone through when they fully considered that they had been married should be recognised, and she was entitled to a pension. This judge also stated that obtaining a ‘pareja de hecho’ recognition, available for a couple that were not married, did not apply in this case according to their beliefs.

All Eyes on Gibraltar Spain and the UK are watching the COVID-19 situation in Gibraltar with great interest. Like the UK, they started very early on vaccinating people, including Spaniards who came across the border every day, who worked in residential homes for the elderly, day care centres and other work that

In the News put them in daily contact with vulnerable people. By early April, 72% of the 33,700 residents had been vaccinated with 27,200 of the adult population having receiving the two doses. During March they started vaccinating the 14,700 workers who cross the border every day to work, and in La Linea area where they mostly come from, the vaccination rate for Spaniards was only 5%. In midApril it was decided that there was “herd immunity” so numbers of infected people would fall dramatically. They scrapped the wearing of masks in public areas and social distancing, introduced extended hours in the hospitality sector until 2am, and scrapped the curfew. People on flights from the UK, who are restricted to Spaniards or residents of Gibraltar, still have to have a negative PCR or LAMP test before leaving the UK. The situation is being carefully monitored as being an “experiment” that may lead to similar action in the UK and Spain at some future date. Apple Waterproofing Fines The Consumer Regulator in Italy has fined Apple 10 million euros for making false claims regarding waterproofing. The regulator stated that Apple falsely advertised its iPhone 8 through to iPhone 11 Pro Max as being water resistant to a depth of up to four metres for 30 minutes. The accusation was that Apple did not explain that this is only true in the presence of “specific conditions and in a laboratory using distilled water”, not encountered in practice in real life. The watchdog accused Apple of deceiving customers by pushing the water resistance claims with a deliberately vague disclaimer that stated: “The guarantee does not cover damage by liquids”. This major loophole allowed Apple to get out of fixing customers’ phones that had become soaked, even if they were still under warranty. France has also fined Apple over this, which has become known as “battery-gate”, and in the US they settled a related class-action lawsuit against the company in 2020, with a payment of 500 million dollars (401.9 million euros). This is not the first victory for Italy's anti-trust regulator. In 2018 the watchdog

forced Apple and Samsung to pay 10 million euros in fines for deliberately cutting down the performance of older phones with software changes in an effort to persuade customers to have upgrades they didn't need, or buy new phones. Help Buy Tolkien’s House! When a passer-by, Julia Golding, an award-winning novelist, saw that JRR Tolkien’s ‘Northmoor’house in Oxford was up for sale she started thinking how good it would be if Tolkien’s fans could buy it. It is where he wrote ‘Lord of the Rings’ at the time of WWI and he lived there until 1947. An appeal for crowd-funding to the tune of 6 million pounds has been launched to buy the property and carry out renovations. “Project Northmoor” includes a video, and famous people including Ian McKellen (Gandalf in the films), Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins) and Annie Lennox (who sang the theme song) are backing the appeal. If successful, the idea is that the house would become a literary centre to attract writers of fantasy stories. Julia Golding would like to build a hobbit house in the garden and a Smaug’s lair for pipe smokers, if she can. Amazon Studios have announced that they intend to make a mammoth ‘Lord of the Rings’ television series with a projected cost “of at least” 80 million pounds. Having Children 60% of Spaniards between the ages of 20-34 consider that they would like to have two children, but the average age when women give birth is age 30. Apart from Malta, Spain is right at the bottom of the European list with women only having 1.25 births on average. The average in the EU is 1.6 births, and no EU country has an average of two births that ensures that the population increases over time. 70% of young people in Spain who have a stable partner live together, but the other 30% still live with parents. The economic situation does not stop people wanting to have children, but the reality is that only16% of people with a steady job and a permanent contract have children, only 13% of people who are unemployed, and 9% of people living together with unstable jobs and temporary

In the News contracts. A survey of young people and their ambitions revealed that 66% wanted a good stable job, only 33% wanted children, 26% wanted to continue with their education and 20% hoped for a stable relationship. 48% thought that having free time to do what they wanted was important and having children would curtail this. The EU is continually putting pressure on Spain to increase the number of workers who have a permanent work contract which encourages stability and helps to decrease unemployment. COVID-19 Funeral Costs Paid In The US The White House has announced that President Biden has approved grants to cover the funeral expenses for the 560,000 people who have died during the pandemic, and they will be retrospective. The grants will go from 7,000 to 9,000 dollars which is the equivalent of 5,800 to 7,500 euros, with a maximum of 35,000 dollars (29,500 euros) where several family members have died. Critics say that 9,000 dollars is a very expensive funeral and many people have paid for a cremation that only costs 1,500 dollars, so they should be given this amount of money and no more. Another criticism is that the grants only apply to legal residents, whereas the population that has suffered the most financially are undocumented residents. They usually have reduced earnings and have contracted COVID-19 because they work in jobs such as bus and train employees, public street cleaners and refuse collectors who have the maximum exposure to the disease. President Biden considers that deaths from the pandemic are the same as American people being killed in wars when their re-patriation and funeral expenses are paid, and grants made to the families of the 2,800 people who died on the September 11th attacks. The numbers of people who have died in the pandemic in the US is tentimes the numbers who died in the Vietnam war and more than the number of Americans who died in both World Wars.

Azata del Sol, the developers of the El Algarrobico Hotel in Carboneras, against Greenpeace activists. In 2014 a large number of activists painted a very large 8,000m2 circle in black paint on the façade of the 21-storey hotel, along with the words “Hotel Ilegal”. To do this they had to break into the hotel and destroyed various doors. Guardia Civil police requested that the activists left the site, and the names of 28 of them who refused were obtained. A previous court hearing in Vera ruled that as the hotel was scheduled to be demolished there was no material damage cost, but the court in Almería has ruled that there is a case to answer and the demolition of the hotel had not been legally decreed at the time. Azata del Sol are requesting a fine of 6 euros per day for 24 months for the 28 people in court and a prison term of 12 months, which would be a suspended sentence, for ignoring a lawful request from the police. The developer is also asking for a compensation order of 186,000 euros for the damage caused to the façade. Four days after Greenpeace had painted the words “Hotel Ilegal”, Carboneras residents painted out the “I” with white paint, so it then read “Hotel Legal”! If the 95% completed hotel had been finished, and interviews for staff had already started, it would have given direct and indirect employment to 500 people.

Conditions For EU Funding Spain is due to receive a grant of 140 million euros from the EU to help the economy recover, but there are various conditions that have to be met. These apply to pensions, job contracts and economic harmony in Spain as a whole, rather than various regulations in different autonomous communities. There is concern that going back to pensions being increased by the cost-of-living index will result in additional debt, and this has to be addressed. As regards labour laws, the EU want Spain to cut down on the number of temporary contracts to stabilise the employment situation, and introduce a training scheme for workers who will lose their jobs when the ‘ERTE’ scheme (the government pay 70% of wages for people who are Greenpeace and El Algarrobico Hotel A court in Vera, on the instructions of a court in not laid off) expires. Having a unified economic Almería, has re-opened a court case brought by unity law will do away with bottlenecks caused by

Warning Triangles to be Withdrawn In 2017, two retired Guardia Civil police officers introduced and marketed a high intensity V-16 “Help Flash” light to replace the warning triangles that drivers have to use if their vehicle breaks down. The ‘DGT’ (Spanish traffic department) provisionally approved their use in 2018, but putting out triangles as well was still obligatory. The batteryoperated circular lights are magnetic, so a driver can put one on the roof of their car without getting out of the vehicle. The yellow flashing strobe light has a 360-degree beam that can be seen from over one kilometre away and lasts for about 2 hours. The battery-life is given as being 18 months and they can be recharged. In March it was announced that these lights have now been finally

approved in Spain with the optional addition of a GPS signal and they can be used from July 1st instead of the triangles. One manufacturer markets these V-16 improved flashing lights as “Help Flash Smart” and they operate with Bluetooth to give the exact location, via a smartphone app, that can be sent to your insurance company breakdown service, or the emergency services in the event of injury. The continuous GPS signal could be used by traffic police to warn motorists of the site of a major accident, on the illuminated motorway message boards, before the emergency services can get there. Both types of the flashing lights cost about 25 euros, but other manufacturers market similar models. Putting out warning triangles behind, or in front and behind, a vehicle, even when wearing the compulsory reflective jacket, can be dangerous, and the triangles will cease to be a requirement in Spain after January 1st, 2026, with the new lights being used instead.

Ecological Growing

I

n mid-April the EU published a review of the amounted to purchases of 2.6 billion euros, up 8.4 agricultural situation and stressed the need for percent on the previous year, with each person in more ecologically grown produce. The review noted Spain spending an annual average of 50 euros. that during the pandemic there was a problem with establishments being closed but despite this, the demand from consumers had still been high and exports had not suffered. The relaxation of some of the tariffs in the US has helped, and the agreement between the EU and the UK following Brexit is proving workable. It was pointed out the ecological growing of fruit and veg meant that the producer did not have to spend money on fertilisers and insecticides, and the percentage of ecological grown produce should be increased. In 2020, Andalucía exported more fruit and veg than any other autonomous community in Spain. They have led the league table for several years and the total from Andalucía is 39% of all these exports from Spain. This came to 6 billion euros with 51% of it from Almería province. There was a small drop in production but sales increased. At the end of 2020 there was a record 3,800 hectares (about 15 square miles) dedicated to growing ecological fruit and veg under plastic and there were 4,200 hectares (about 16 square miles) of outdoor growing, with a quadrupling of areas in the last 10 years. The total area amounts to 77% of the area in all of Andalucía. The increase in volume has resulted in 381 companies dedicated to the packaging of fresh products, and producing fruit juice, jams and dried fruit, and bottling olive oil.

There is no doubt that ecologically grown produce command higher prices. The major product is tomatoes, grown on 1,700 hectares. 44% are cherry tomatoes and they sell for 28% more than the nonecological type. Courgettes sell for 53% more, peppers 46% more, cucumbers 29% more, a 22% increase for melons, a 24% increase for runner beans, and ecological aubergines have an enormous increase of 79%.

Germany is the largest market for Andalucía with 29% of all exports, valued at 1.3 billion euros, and 2020 figures were up 8%. France bought 714 million euros of products, up 3%, and the UK took products valued at 636 million euros, up 11%. Figures for the Low Countries and Italy were about 1% down, but still amounted to sales of 660 million euros. So Now You Know... Roman Mosaics The early Greeks made patterns with coloured stone pressed into cement but the Romans refined this by making “Tesserae” (cubes of stone, ceramic, or glass) to form intricate, colourful designs, from about the first century BC. Walls had colourful paintings but mosaics were used as a floor surface to be walked on. They were used in homes of wealthy Romans to show visitors or friends their high status, with themes such as mythological stories that showed they had read important books, or wild animals being captured for fights in the arena that highlighted their sponsorship of public games. Another use for mosaics was in temples. Articulated Lorries An articulated lorry is a truck or towing unit with a cab that can be physically separated from a trailer that it tows, usually known as a “semi” or “artic” in the US. The trailer only has wheels at the rear, and the front is supported by the towing vehicle. Because the trailer is fixed to the towing unit with a swivel joint, this allows lorries to turn corners very easily in a much smaller radius than normal lorries of the same length. The other large benefit is that because the trailer can be detached from the front unit this can go off to collect another trailer whilst the first one is unloaded or loaded, very useful for items such as shipping containers. Fibreglass Fibreglass is initially made of glass similar to that in windows. The glass is heated until molten and then forced through superfine holes. This creates filaments that are extremely thin - so thin that they are best measured in microns. A woven reinforced plastic material is embedded with the glass fibres laid in a random criss-cross pattern. This is then held together with an epoxy, polyester or vinyl resin to form an extremely strong and durable composite. It is cheaper and more flexible than carbon fibre, stronger than many metals by weight, and non-magnetic. It is ideal for forming irregular shapes in a mould, such as wind-turbine blades.

Suspension Bridges A suspension bridge has the roadway or rail track suspended over a river or gorge and very strong cables go to the top of a tower on either side and then down to the ground where they are securely fixed. This design does away with any supports in the middle of the bridge down to the ground. The Union Chain Bridge was erected on behalf of the Berwick and North Durham Turnpike Trust and opened on 26 July 1820. Spanning the River Tweed (the county and national boundary between Scotland and England), it was the first road suspension bridge in Britain and is the oldest still in use. The 1981 Humber Bridge is the longest in the UK. Solar Panels At age 19, Edmond Becquerel became the first person to build a photovoltaic cell that produced electricity. Working in his father’s laboratory in 1839 he discovered that sunlight gave the most electrical energy. It wasn’t until 1954 that the first practical photovoltaic cell was publicly demonstrated at Bell Laboratories in the US. Advanced photovoltaic solar cells were used by NASA in the Vanguard satellite in 1958 as an alternative power source to the primary battery power source. By adding cells to the outside of the body, the mission time could be extended with no major changes to the spacecraft or its power systems. Very Old Species Jellyfish are the oldest multi-organ animal in the world and have existed in some form for at least 500 million years. This was confirmed when a fossilised jellyfish was found in 1946. Some very old animal species are known as “living fossils” and the sturgeon fish, the oldest of the bony fish family, evolved 200 million years ago. “Martialis huereka” is an ant species discovered in 2000 in the Amazon rainforest. This ant has been named “Ant from Mars” as they look extremely different from the rest of the ant species. “Martialis huereka” is considered the oldest ant species, estimated to have evolved around 120 million years ago.

“Hybridgate”

I

n 2014, US researchers at the University of West of petrol and electric power, only a third of the Virginia discovered that certain VW diesel cars 100-120 miles per gallon claimed by the emitted up to 40 times the permissible levels of manufacturers. harmful nitrogen oxide when tested on the road and this became known as ‘Dieselgate’, a word coined from the US ‘Watergate’ scandal. In September 2015, Volkswagen admitted installing software designed to reduce emissions during static exhaust tests in 11 million diesel engines worldwide, and VW shares plunged 40 percent in two days. In April 2016, VW announced a net loss for 2015, its first in 20 years, after setting aside billions to cover the anticipated costs of the scandal. In June they agreed to pay 14.7 billion dollars in buybacks, compensation and penalties in a mammoth settlement with US authorities and the deal included cash payments for nearly 500,000 US drivers. In August 2017, a Michigan court sentenced VW engineer James Liang to 40 months in prison with a 200,000-dollar fine, and in December, VW executive Oliver Schmidt, who was arrested while on holiday in Florida, was sentenced to seven years in jail. Researchers and laboratory test engineers are accusing the manufacturers of plug-in hybrid cars of a similar ‘Hybridgate’ cover-up although not so serious. Plug-in hybrids switch between battery electric power and an internal combustion engine, delivering significant emissions improvements over conventional cars. However, environmental campaigners have long harboured concerns that plug-in hybrids do not offer the environmental benefits suggested by their advertising. Greg Archer, UK director of campaign group ‘Transport & Environment’, says one leading carmaker “is conning its customers”. This group is highly critical of plugin hybrids, some of which it labels “fake” electric vehicles because of their continued use of the internal combustion engine. Separate data from the Miles Consultancy which tracks real-time fuel use found that almost all plug-in hybrid cars failed to achieve the milage specified, although in some cases this was due to insufficient battery charging. An analysis of 1,388 plug-ins driven over eight months revealed that they achieved an average of about 40 miles per gallon when using the mixture

All of the top 11 bestselling plug-in hybrids have limitations on pure electric driving ability. Cold temperatures can trigger the internal combustion engine in Volvo’s XC90 SUV, the Mercedes-Benz E Class executive car, and the Kia Niro Crossover combustion engine also comes on when the deicing facility is used. The Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, the UK’s bestselling plug-in last year, has an “EV” button that switches on “EV priority” mode. However, the internal combustion engine will kick in if the driver overcomes the adaptive cruise control to overtake, or if the battery gets too hot or too cold. Claims regarding the Jaguar Land Rover’s Range Rover and Range Rover Sport plug-ins are that under acceleration the internal combustion engine comes in very early as the electric motor cannot provide enough power. There are also speed limits on all-electric driving for BMW’s 2, 3 and 5 Series cars as well as its Mini Countryman plug-in. Eventually, all plug-in hybrid cars will be banned, as promoting purely electric cars with zero emissions is a priority. Launched last year, the Green NCAP assessment is designed to demonstrate how environmental friendly new cars perform, using the results of both laboratory and real-world driving tests. The Hyundai Kona and Renault Zoe purely electric cars achieved a score of 5 out of 5, but no hybrid car tested scored more than 3.5. Industry analysts predict a hybrid “price war” to achieve more sales.

Doubts About August Music Festivals

T

he three major music festivals in Almería province that take place in August were all cancelled in 2020, and there is some pessimism that this could happen again this year. The Deambeach Festival in Villaricos is the enormous one scheduled for August 4th-8th this year, followed by Juergas Rock at Adra from August 5th-7th. The Cooltural Fest in Almería city from August 19th-22nd takes place during the first days of the Almería city ‘Feria’ celebrations, that were also cancelled last year. Between them they accounted for 225,000 fans, 1,800 direct employees and an enormous number of temporary workers. If all three are cancelled again this year the lost income to third parties could be another 20 million euros.

the ones who will be vaccinated last, and if this has not taken place the festival may well be cancelled.

Dreambeach Villaricos is an acclaimed international event that wins awards for the way it is run, and in 2019 it had an associated income of 15 million euros. 1,200 people are employed as security personnel, sound and light technicians, stage hands, and food and drink staff. In 2019 there were 91 DJs from various parts of the world who performed on several stages, and the main stage was the height of a ten-storey building. The total enclosed area was 500,000m2 with 300,000m2 for the campsite and a huge 60m x 30m pool. In 2019 a total of 160,000 “dreamers” turned up with fairly expensive ticket prices.

Manel Núñez from Berrintxe Producciónes is their CEO who organises the Adra Juergas Rock festival, and he has his fingers firmly crossed as well. This festival brought in two million euros in local income in 2019 with 25,000 visitors, 200 direct employees and copious indirect employees. Manuel Núñez states that in 2019 there were a considerable number of visitors who booked a holiday near Adra, with some of them there for 15 days, with the consequent income from hotel and apartment bookings. The first Cooltural Fest festival took place in Almería city in 2019 and attracted 35,000 fans. The linked Solazo Fest attracted 5,000 visitors and expectations for 2020 following highly favourable publicity and glowing reports were that this number would go up to 12,000.

The DJs and their support staff fly into Almería, Granada, Málaga and Alicante on commercial airlines or in private jets, and 42 luxury vehicles collected and returned them to the airports and ferried them from and back to 300 rooms booked in 4* or 5* hotels in 2019. Many visiting fans book rooms themselves and spend money in the immediate vicinity. Ibai Cereijo is the Dreambeach Communication Director and he is very worried that they and other businesses will experience another enormous financial loss if the event is cancelled again. Headline DJs have been announced and tickets are on sale, but he has his fingers tightly crossed. The age group of the fans are

If the people who would attend these events have not been vaccinated, (and the present unlikely target is 70% of the Spanish population “by the end of summer”), there is no way the enormous numbers can congregate. Monitoring fans via antigen tests is considered impractical. What will have happened by August is completely unknown but DJs, light and sound technicians and stage erectors have to be booked well in advance. The extremely large stages at Villaricos cost an enormous amount of money and there is an early cut-off date after which this fabrication work cannot be cancelled, apart from DJs and their agents paid in advance.

Green Energy

C

oal-fired power stations in Spain are being taken out of service and the one in Almería province at Carboneras has already shut. This is the most expensive way of producing electricity and is also the “dirtiest” as regards CO2 emissions. At Carboneras and other coal-fired power stations the new EU regulations for reducing CO2 emissions that came into force in 2021 were so costly that it was not practical to comply. Nuclear power stations in Spain are also scheduled to close in coming years and some of them are working on an extension of their previously anticipated life. Last December, a large round table meeting of industrialists organised by the government debated the methods by which the production of electricity and energy could come from renewable or other clean sources. This objective is part of the initiative of the “Next Generation of Green Energy” as part of the major plan for the transition to the ecologically sound production of energy in Spain and the EU. Three large Spanish companies, Endesa, Iberdrola and Naturgy have announced plans that will cost 53 billion euros to fund 360 different initiatives. The 115 projects from Iberdrola will cost 21 million euros, the 110 from Endesa will cost 19 billion euros and Naturgy plan over 100 projects at a cost of 13 billion euros. A major initiative within the EU is to convert to “clean hydrogen”. Renewable “green” hydrogen can be produced in electrolysers by splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen using renewable electricity sources. The storage potential of hydrogen is particularly beneficial for power grids as it allows the energy to be stored, not only in large quantities, but also for long periods. Significantly, this means that hydrogen can help improve the flexibility of energy systems by balancing out supply and demand when there is either too much or not enough power generation. This will also help boost energy efficiency throughout Europe and should result in an end to large increases in electricity bills such as occurred this January in Spain. Renewable generated hydrogen can also be used in long distance transport and in industry to produce items such as fertiliser at a much reduced cost.

Projects from the three large Spanish companies include intelligent network equipment, sustainable transport, increasing building efficiency, and a 100 megawatt (MW) green hydrogen plant in Castellon for the ceramics industry. (One megawatt is the power needed for 100 electric water heaters with a 1,000watt element switched on for one hour). At Valencia port it is calculated that 8.3 tonnes of CO2 gas emissions could be saved by not very expensive conversion. Green hydrogen plants will be built in La Coruña, Asturias and León where the nuclear power stations are due to shut, and the expected output is given as 9,000 tonnes of hydrogen per annum. Repsol also has green energy plans, and they propose to drastically increase the number of charging points at their petrol stations for electric vehicles. The construction of a gas generation plant from urban waste will be used to replace some of the traditional fuel consumption at the Petronor Basque refinery and they intend to build the first advanced biofuel production plant in Spain at Car tagena. Decarbonisation targets include a significant commitment to hydrogen, a sector in which they plan to achieve an equivalent production of 400 MW in 2025 and 1,200 MW by 2030. In our province, ‘Green Capital Power’ will soon be given authorisation to build a photovoltaic solar park near Lucainena de Los Torres to provide 100MW of power, and two wind farms to give 240MW.

Community News Donations to the Food Banks by the Freemasons by Stuart Walters

Before proceeding further, I should explain on what authority I write this article. I am W. Bro. Stuart Walters, Worshipful Master of Almeria 74 Freemasons Lodge based in Turre. In April last year, the wife of my Senior Warden, Mrs Cath Ferrier, was driving past the Red Cross Centre in Mojácar and noticed the line of people outside the Centre waiting for the Food Bank to open. The following week she noticed that the line was now a lot longer. She was moved to tears to see so many destitute people queuing for food. She told her husband what she had witnessed and asked if the Lodge could do anything to help the Food Bank. This was then referred to me and I responded that we would need the approval of all of our Lodge members before any action could be taken. Further investigation by my Charity Steward identified that there were three Food Banks in our area in a similar situation. A proposition was put to the Lodge that we provide food and produce to the value of 200 euros per week to each food bank. During the time of obtaining the approval of the brethren Mrs Cath Ferrier and Bro. Charles Alman visited the Lidl Supermarket in Garrucha to see if they would work with us to put together the weekly Food Bank requirements. They readily agreed to help. The proposition was overwhelmingly approved and so the first of the weekly Food / Produce collections and delivery was started by Cath, Charles, and my Charity Steward, W.Bro. Vic Childe on 9th May, 2020. For five weeks deliveries were given to all three Food Banks. Then the one in Los Gallardos began receiving help from the Red Cross and we stopped delivering to them as they indicated that they did not need our help. The deliveries to the other two continued until 26th June when it appeared that the initial phase of the pandemic was over.

In November, the Food Banks asked if it was possible for us to help again. The members again gave their full approval. We now had the problem of being confined in our Municipalities as the members carrying out the work each lived in a different municipality than those of the Food Banks! I sought the approval and authority of my local Police Sergeant in Sorbas that it would be acceptable for my members to continue the work. He agreed, provided that they were all identified in a letter of authority. With that letter in hand my ´Three Musketeers´ recommenced their work for a further 5 weeks up until Christmas. After Christmas, the Pandemic was in its third phase and so we went back to the members for permission to continue for a further 10 weeks. This time it was just the Red Cross and the Turre Evangelical Church Food Banks who were in desperate need. Bro. Charles obtained the needs of the Food Banks in Spanish and this was transmitted to Cath who arranged with the manager at Lidl Supermarket for the Food/Produce to be available for her to collect and then deliver to the Food Banks each Wednesday and Friday. This continued for a further 10 weeks until Easter. In total Mrs Cath Ferrier together with Bro. Charles Alman and (whilst there were three Food Banks to service, W. Bro. Vic Childe) completed a total of 23 weeks. Over the complete 23-week campaign we gave a total value of 11,292.19 euros of Food and Produce to the food banks. We have all, as a Lodge of Freemasons, been privileged to assist our local community in such a positive way.

Community News dogs during 2020 despite the shop being closed for periods and there being no fundraising events, times were hard with little revenue but food and vets’ bills still needed to be paid said Dianne Reid, President of APSA. Di was instrumental in setting up the charity and became President in 2008. She has had a lifetime of involvement in rescuing and training dogs and has led APSA in homing over 2,000. Di runs the helpline on 663 762 642 and has a vast amount of Winner - Chris Franklin knowledge and experience in caring for dogs, legal requirements, help in choosing a pet etc.

Aguilón Amigos at Aguilón Golf

Spring was in the air on Friday, 26th March at the Aguilón Golf Course, Pulpi, when the Aguilón Amigos Group played in their Spanish Golf Federation Qualifier. The weather could not have been kinder – members enjoyed playing under clear blue skies and still conditions! The course is in excellent condition – so no excuses! For those of us not playing too well, the beautiful scenery and wild life are always welcome distractions! Our winner, Chris Franklin, achieved a creditable 41 points. Second place was taken by Gillian Evans [38 points] and third place by Jim Laing [36 points]. Paul Mailly, Lynne Atherton and Eddie Vaughan were in the prize money having each recorded a 2 on the par 3’s. The Amigos Group plays at Aguilón Golf Course on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays teeing off just before 9am. If you would like to play with us contact the administrator at aguilonamigos2021@gmail.com

The charity has had three shops, the present one in Avenido Lepanto next to Harrisons. APSA no longer has a stall at Los Llanos but the shop is open 6 days a week and is always grateful for donations of clothes, bric-a-brac etc. Manageress Val and her many shop volunteers provide the main income for the charity. Membership, 5 euros, is due now and can be paid at the shop. This provides a welcome boost to the charity’s finances, the monthly newsletter giving a charity update to members. Looking to the future, Di has contacts to facilitate the homing of dogs in other countries. Podencos, for example, are popular in the UK where there is safe home checking. The charity is seeking a kennel manager to join the team, and homing and fostering continue. Liaison with other charities, the vets, and the high profile of APSA on Facebook help the charity to assist the many abandoned dogs in the area. The charity is always seeking volunteers to assist in the shop, kennels, dog walking, fundraising etc. If you are interested in helping a worthwhile cause please contact Di at the helpline 663 762 642.

Jokes of the Month English to become the Official European Language Despite Brexit, the European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English". In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter. In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. The Code Word There was an old priest who got sick of all the people in his parish confessing to adultery. One Sunday, in the pulpit, he said, "If I hear one more person confess to adultery, I'll quit!" Well, everyone liked him, so they came up with a code word. Someone who had committed adultery would say instead that they had 'fallen.' This seemed to satisfy the old priest and things went well until the priest passed away at a ripe old age. A few days after the new priest arrived, he visited the mayor of the town and seemed very concerned. "Mayor, you have to do something about the pavements in town. When people come into the confessional, they keep telling me they've fallen." The mayor started to laugh, realising that no one had told the new priest about the code word. But, before he could explain, the priest shook an accusing finger at him and shouted, "I don't know what you're laughing about, because your wife has fallen three times this week!"

The Navy Recruits Two new recruits were on the deck of a ship. One turns to other and says, "It’s awfully quiet on deck tonight. Isn't it?" The other recruit replies, "Everyone must be listening to the band." The first new recruit says, "There is no band on this ship." The second one replied, "No, I definitely heard the captain say, a band on ship." The Budgie When my wife came home from work, I said, "Sit down, I've got some bad news. The cat's torn your budgie to pieces." She replied with tears in her eyes, "We don't have a cat, but I know you never liked the budgie." I said, "I know that, I had to borrow the cat from the couple across the road."

...and next... The Valuable Pictures

The Parrots A lady goes to her parish priest one day and tells him, "Father, I have a problem. I have two female parrots but they only know how to say one thing." "What do they say?" the priest inquired. "They say, 'Hi, we're prostitutes. Do you want to have some fun?'" the woman said embarrassingly. "That's obscene!" the priest exclaimed, "I can see why you are embarrassed." He thought a minute and then said, "You know, I may have a solution to this problem. I have two male parrots whom I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house and we will put them in the cage with Francis and Job. My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship. I'm sure your parrots will stop saying that...that phrase in no time." "Thank you," the lady responded, "this may very well be the solution." The next day, she brought her female parrots to the priest's house. As he ushered her in, she saw his two male parrots were inside their cage, holding their rosary beads and praying. Impressed, she walked over and placed her parrots in with them. After just a couple of seconds, the female parrots exclaimed out in unison, "Hi, we're prostitutes. Do you want to have some fun?" There was a stunned silence. Finally, one male parrot looked over at the other male parrot and said, "Put the beads away, Francis, our prayers have been answered!"

A New York attorney representing a wealthy art collector in a court case called his client and told him, "Saul, I have some good news and I have some bad news." The art collector replied, "You know, I've had an awful day, Jack, so let's hear the good news first." The lawyer said, "Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she has invested only $5,000 in two very nice pictures that she thinks will bring her somewhere between $15 and $20 million ... and I think she could be right." Saul replied enthusiastically, "Holy cow! Well done! My wife is a brilliant business woman, isn't she? You've just made my day. Now, I know I can handle the bad news. What is it?" The lawyer replied, “She hired a private detective and the pictures are of you and your secretary! The Gynaecologist’s New Patient. Upon entering his consulting room, the gynaecologist notices that the new patient is very nervous. While putting on the latex gloves, he decides to break the ice with some small talk. "Do you know how they make latex gloves?" he asks. "No", she responds. The doctor says, "There is a factory in Mexico full of tubs of latex that people of various hand sizes dip their hands into and let them dry." She doesn't even crack a smile, and the exam begins as normal, but a few minutes later she bursts into laughter. The doctor looks up, startled, and says, "What's so funny?" She says, "I'm imagining how they make condoms."

The Cookies I’m not very computer literate, but I went online looking for some new recipes for dessert. I clicked on accept cookies, but I'm still waiting for them to show up.
