of the terrorist massacre last year in the Rambla area. King Felipe VI and Queen Leticia went back to Barcelona along with other government ministers to mark this anniversary. Surveys of tourists in Barcelona revealed that only a very small percentage knew that there had been a terrorist attack last year, but hardly any of them knew where it had taken place. The headline event for our region was the 6th Dreambeach Music Festival at Villaricos that had 155,000 people attending. A very large security operation involved 800 Guardia Civil police backed up by local police and civil defence personnel. We expand on this information in our “In the News” section.

Many of the concerts and cultural events in August have been in the open air, and this is also a holiday period for town hall employees along with other Spaniards. Bringing town hall websites up to date has suffered as a result and during August the Almería city cultural events website only listed two events in September, one of which was the ‘El Divo’ concert that was already sold out! Classical orchestras have the summer months off as their members are on holiday as well. In September and October things return to normal. We list the few events that we have been able to glean in our “What’s On” section. Tourist numbers throughout Spain in 2018 may well be fewer than 2017, although total numbers remain to be seen. Almería airport has seen fewer passengers than in 2017 and we explain various reasons for this in our “In the News” section. Large events took place on August 17th in Barcelona which was the anniversary

September 28th is the 6th anniversary of the disastrous floods in Puerto Rey and Pueblo Laguna. Regretfully, many of the proposed actions announced by Central Government and the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) have not materialised. Vera council is pursuing Central Government through the courts for not carrying out work promised several years ago, before 2012. There are no major fiesta dates in September when everything shuts down, but local fiestas at the end of September take place in Alfaix, Cantoria and Pulpí. In early October there are local fiestas in Turre, Albox, Huércal-Overa and Mojácar.

In the News A Reduction in Tourists? It is far too premature to have an accurate assessment of the number of tourists coming to Spain this year, but up to the end of July there was a reduction of 2% in UK tourists and 4% in Germans. The total reduction in tourists worked out as 260,000. One reason given is that tourists are deciding that the problems in Turkey, Egypt, and Greece are over, or they dismiss any fears. Istanbul has very competitive prices and this is another destination tourists are choosing despite the terrorist attack two years ago, and the same thing applies to Tunisia. One of the reasons for a reduction in UK tourists may be linked to ‘Brexit’, and rising prices of transport, electricity and gas probably have an effect as well. Very high temperatures in the UK may well have stopped people booking late flights to Spain which usually happens if the weather in the UK is bad. German tourists are not a sector that comes to Spain just for the sun and beach but they spend 101 Euros per day and stay an average of 9 nights. In 2017, the number of tourists coming to Spain went up 10% compared to 2016 and hit the record number of 81.8 billion with an income of 60.16 billion Euros. Strikes from French air traffic controllers, the problems that Ryanair face, and strikes by ground crews from the airline Iberia, may well account for some reduction in numbers. Tourists from the US, China, and Russia are increasing in numbers, and there are now regular flights direct to Spain from various cities in China. Some Spanish analysts point out that even if 2018 total figures do show a slight drop, the amount of money spent is going up and it looks as if there will be an increase in income of 3-4%. In Barcelona, a slight decrease in tourist numbers would be welcomed as they are bursting at the seams! Too Many Spaniards! In August, the newspaper the ‘Lancashire Telegraph’ reported that an 81yr old English woman, Freda Jackson, with reduced mobility, had complained to Thomas Cook that her 14 day holiday in Benidorm was a disaster and had been mis-sold. She asked for a complete refund of the 1,333 pounds sterling she and a companion aged 61 had spent on their

holiday. One of the complaints was that there were too many Spaniards and she asked why the Spaniards had not gone somewhere else for their holidays! She claimed that the Spaniards really got on her nerves, were rude, and a young man whom she claimed was Spanish nearly knocked her over without any apology. She said that the hotel staff seemed far more concerned with the Spanish guests and the entertainment was very biased towards the Spaniards! Further complaints were that she had not been informed until six days before her holiday that the dates had been changed, and she had been told there was no problem with her reduced mobility. She was put on the 14th floor (although there was a lift of course) and was then moved to the 2nd floor, but she complained that there were 42 steps down to the pool area and external access to the hotel was up a slope. The newspaper reported that the woman had been offered a Thomas Cook voucher for 75 pounds which she turned down, and then offered 566 pounds in compensation to be split between the two holidaymakers as “a gesture of goodwill”. A Thomas Cook spokesperson stated that the 566 pounds offer was because there was a clerical error in not informing her in good time that the flight and holiday dates had been postponed, and was not related to her complaints regarding Spanish guests!

Not a Successful Festival As opposed to the ‘Dreambeach’ Music Festival, a disaster occurred at the ‘O Marisquiño’ music festival at Vigo (near Portugal) on Sunday, August 12th. The concert site was beside the port, and a wooden walkway 10mts wide and 39mts long was filled with people. It collapsed throwing many people into the water below, with a total of 430 people injured. Very fortunately, only 9 people were admitted to hospital with serious injuries that were not lifethreatening. Many people were injured by falling onto the concrete supports under the walkway. The town hall and the port authority immediately each claimed that the maintenance of the wooden walkway was the responsibility of the other party. One claim was that the organizers had sold tickets to more than the 5,000 people that was the

In the News maximum official number allowed, but the organizers quickly denied this stating that the total number was just over 3,500. Local residents claimed that the walkway had been clearly defective for a long period of time. Health & Safety operatives and the police immediately launched an investigation to determine the root cause of the collapse, and whose responsibility it was. It emerged that the boardwalk and the concrete supporting structure that stood in the water had not been inspected in recent years.

An E-cigarette Study The Spanish association of e-cigarette companies have published the results of a survey of 600 people who use e-cigarettes in Madrid, Valencia, and Seville. In 2013 there were a total of 3,000 shops selling e-cigarettes in Spain, but this then fell dramatically to only 150 in 2015. This number rose to 400 at the end of 2017, but many e-cigarette users buy from internet companies. The number of people who now use e-cigarettes is calculated to be 450,000 although there were only 220,000 in 2015. 70% of the people surveyed stated that they had totally given up smoking cigarettes, which is a very good percentage for the manufacturers and sellers of e-cigarettes. Another 15% had cut down on smoking tobacco to a marked extent. 68% of the people questioned considered e-cigarettes were ideal if a person wished to give up normal smoking, 10% had starting using e-cigarettes out of curiosity, and another 10% intended to reduce smoking normal cigarettes. 2.5% were attracted by the fact that ecigarettes can be smoked in enclosed premises, with only a few places, such as public transport, health centres and hospitals where it is not allowed. The renewed interest in using e-cigarettes is put down to people accepting that smoking ordinary cigarettes is bad, and e-cigarettes and the liquid costs a fraction of the price of normal tobacco. This September there is a big conference in Barcelona regarding the danger of smoking, effective ways of stopping, and general advice. The E-cigarette companies intend to present the results of the survey. Very recently, a House of Commons committee has stated that e-cigarettes are 95%

safer than ordinary cigarettes, and by far the best way for people to stop smoking tobacco. They recommend e-cigarettes should be available by prescription, and legislation (such as a ban on buses, trains, and offices) should be re-evaluated.

A Successful Dreambeach Music Festival The 6th Dreambeach music festival from August 8th-12th, which is now an annual event, was considered to be a success by members of the public, organisers, and the security services. 155,000 people turned up with a peak attendance of 70,000 on the Friday night, and 26,000 people used the campsite. The security services classified it as a level 4 (out of 5) risk for terrorism, and 800 Guardia Civil police worked shifts. These included helicopter crews, a marine unit with launches and scuba-divers, various dog units, and frequency jamming equipment to stop drones being used. Police carried out vehicle checks and 5,000 breathalyser tests, with 137 drivers proving to be over the alcohol limit, and 218 having taken drugs. 577 non-drivers were charged with possession or the supply of drugs. One woman complained that she had been inappropriately touched in a dance area but this was the only complaint of this nature. 40 private jets carrying performers landed at AlmerĂa, MĂĄlaga or Alicante airports and a fleet of 44 chauffeured limousines ferried them to and fro. The organizers booked 300 rooms in 4 or 5 star hotels. 2,000 people were directly employed in setting up the event or providing services. A police spokesperson

Brits and Blood Donations Many Expat Brits have tried to be good citizens and give blood when the mobile unit comes to their town. Unfortunately, they may often be turned away. This is because of the “mad cow disease” that affected cattle in the UK, Northern Ireland, and the Isle of Man. Known as “Bovine spongiform encephalopathy”, it could be transmitted to humans who then suffered from “Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease”, or vCJD, a very rare and fatal brain disease, caught from eating infected meat, and 177 people died in the UK in the relevant period. First discovered in the UK in 1986 it peaked in 1993, and was not stamped out completely until 2001. From 1986 to 1998, 4.4 million cattle were slaughtered. The human variation affects the blood of the recipient and people can carry the virus without any symptoms, so this is the reason that Brits cannot give blood in Spain. The Spanish Health Authority consider that the years 1980-1997 are the most crucial, and a Brit who lived in the UK for 12 months during these years cannot give blood, but in the US the time period is only 3 months. If a Brit living in Spain was born in the UK after 1997, so this year they would be aged 21, they can give blood, so this means the vast majority of other Brits cannot, unless they left the UK before 1980. There is a very small probability that persons are still carriers of vCJD after all this time, but in theory this may still be the case and figures are that perhaps one person in every 2,000 head of population may still be infected. A Drunk Lorry Driver Motorway police recently pulled over a driver of a 40 tonne articulated lorry near Cartagena in Murcia province. It appeared that the lorry was being driven erratically, and the 53yr old Spanish driver was breathalysed. Professional drivers cannot be over 0.15 milligram per litre of air, but the driver tested as being 1.12 grams, so nearly seven and a half times over the limit, and on a following test 1.10 grams. The lorry was loaded with barrels of beer! The

The Danger of E-Cigarettes! Almost all airlines have a non-smoking policy for passengers and e-cigarettes are also banned, including the airline Air China whose pilots are not allowed to use e-cigarettes during a flight. In July, a co-pilot in a Boeing 737 decided to have some puffs on his e-cigarette when the captain had left the flight deck for a visit to the loo. Before he came back, the co-pilot wanted to ventilate the cockpit to get rid of the smell, but he pressed the wrong control which cut off air-conditioning to the passenger cabin. As a result, sensors determined that the oxygen level had fallen, oxygen masks came down for the 162 passengers, and the autopilot took the plane from 33,000ft down to 10,000ft in ten minutes. The pilots re-established control and took the plane back up to 26,000ft, and despite frightened passengers the plane continued to its destination. Aviation experts stated that when the oxygen masks had been released a pilot had to land at the nearest airport and not continue with the normal flight destination. They pointed out that if a real emergency then took place there might not be enough oxygen left. The airline mounted an investigation, analysed the black box flight recorder, and announced that the nonsmoking regulation for their pilots had zero tolerance!

In the News Spanish Toll Roads Rumours that the Vera-Cartagena toll road is going to be free are entirely unfounded and it will be some time before this happens. The Spanish state and the Ministry of Transport have bailed out the consortiums that built and ran various toll roads and the older ones, known as “first generation”, have operating licences that will shortly run out. Before 2020, three of these older ones will be made free of charge for motorists, and these three are used by 67,300 people daily generating 370 million Euros every year. Another toll road has an operating licence that expires in 2021and this one will then become free as well. The Vera-Cartagena toll road is relatively new, (compared to the first ones) and has never been viable from day one. Ministry of Transport predictions for the expected traffic took into account major housing development that never materialised following the 2008 construction crisis. The consortium that built it and had the operating licence relied on the expected traffic figures to re-coup their investment. In 2017 the average daily use reached the record number of just over 3,500 assorted vehicles, but this is only 40% of the estimated vehicle traffic from day one. Anticipated eventual figures from the Ministry of Transport were that within a short time period there would be an average of 9,000 vehicles using the toll road daily. Head of Traffic Police Has No Car! Pere Navarro was in charge of the Spanish traffic department (DGT) from 2004-2012 and he supervised the points system that came into force in 2006. He has now been appointed to be the head of the department for a second term. We detail in an article some of the changes that Pere is considering bringing in. He was recently interviewed and asked if he had lost any points himself. His reply was that he hadn’t, mainly because he does not own any vehicle! He uses car sharing services and taxis, or gets lifts from friends. He thinks he is probably the only head of a major European traffic department who has no official car at his disposal, unless he is travelling a long distance when a car and driver is made available. Drivers in Spain who

pay a fine promptly receive a 50% discount, but Pere says that when he was discussing traffic fines in Brussels with other EU traffic chiefs the idea of a discount was greeted with incredulity! In most other EU countries a fine is a fine and has to be paid, but Pere thinks that the discount is a good incentive. He has continually stated that the DGT is not an organization that sees collecting money as a main activity, and any changes in the points system will be the number of points lost, not heavier fines. Pere revealed that when he was asked to be the head of the DGT for a second time he initially refused, but was told that his age and experience were very valuable and the points system needed a re-valuation, so he changed his mind and took the job.

Unofficial “Free” Tourist Guides In many cities where tourists congregate it is now quite common to see a person with a distinctive coloured umbrella who offers free guided tours. Almudena Cencerrado is the president of the Confederation of Guides in Spain and there are 15,000 guides who are certified to give guided tours. They have to demonstrate a very good working knowledge of the site where they are operating and in many cases have to have studied their subject. They receive a small sum of money, usually from the appropriate municipal tourist office. The pirate guides that offer a “free” tour expect to be given donations by each tourist and this is usually in the region of 8 to 10 Euros. One of these guides may well collect 500 Euros in a single day when they give several guided tours and people feel obligated to pay, even if it was not made clear at the start of the tour. In many cases there is a website where the free tours are advertised, often with a mobile number for bookings. Freetour.com was set up from a base in Ireland in 2014 and claims to have guides who work for them in 350 countries, and in Madrid they offer 20 different tours. The website organizers expect to be paid the equivalent of two Euros per customer. There are not many legal obstacles and in the vast majority of cases they can operate without breaking any local regulations. Official guides complain that the

In the News problem is getting worse and it is now a big business pulling in large sums of money. This July, a woman who had signed up with GuruWalk to give tours in a village in Valencia was threatened with a fine of between 100,000 – 600,000 Euros by the Valencia Regional Government. The woman claimed that she was doing it because she loved her village, received minimum tips, and the local tourist office used her services.

A Holiday Letting Scam A woman was recently arrested by plainclothes National Police officers in Almería city and charged with advertising apartment and holiday homes where the property did not exist, or it was only available to rent from legal rental companies. Complaints had been made in Almería province relating to properties in the El Toyo and Retamar area. Initially she was charged with seven specimen cases of fraud and was sent to prison on remand by a judge in Almería. It is thought likely that she carried out this scam all over Spain, and the police are collecting complaints to try and find out how many people have fallen for it. The woman advertised properties on the Spanish portal Milanuncios.com, and she had set up what appeared to be genuine offers that were cheaper than the normal rental amounts. People were asked to pay a deposit that ranged from 250 to 1,300 Euros depending on the size of the property and the time period. The deposit had to be made by bank transfer to a variety of accounts, but when clients tried to contact the woman to find the exact address, more information, or to pay the remaining sums of money, they found that the mobile number was no longer in use. It is alleged that various mobile numbers were used temporarily. “Denuncias” (official complaints) have been made in Granada, Barcelona, Seville, Jaén and Madrid but it was not realized that all the complaints related to the same person. It is claimed that she worked previously for a genuine rental company and so was familiar with the normal procedure. A police spokesperson stated that the sum of money she had fraudulently obtained was over 15,000 Euros from the complaints that they knew about, and it was expected that the total

amount of money may well be considerably more. Police have put an announcement on Milanuncios.com asking people to come forward if they have been part of the scam.

Iberian Lynxes and the Portuguese Fires The Iberian lynx (similar to a large cat) was officially stated to be in danger of extinction in 2000, and a project entitled LIFE+Iberlince was set up to breed them in captivity and reintroduce them into various areas in Spain and Portugal. Because of the forest fires in Portugal in August it was decided that 29 lynx had to be moved from the breeding centre at Silves to a safer location. 12 of them were taken to a centre in Jaén, 9 were taken to Zarza de Granadilla in Cáceres, and 8 to the Doñana National Park centre in Huelva. As had been feared, the centre at Silves was badly damaged in the fires and there is no likelihood of it being reopened soon. Various organizations collaborated in moving the lynx in special containers to minimise any problems and stress during the long journeys and young cubs travelled with their mothers. The majority of the journeys were done overnight when they would normally be asleep. Finally, A Teacher Again Resurreción Galera was a teacher of religion in a Catholic school in Almería who married a divorced man in a civil ceremony in 2000. Because of this she was sacked by the Bishop of Almería. Since then there have been a variety of court cases including

In the News several in the Spanish High Court where Resurreción was appealing against the dismissal and asking to be reinstated. The Bishop had claimed on various occasions that the Spanish Minister of Education could not insist that she was reinstated, and he had the ultimate say, and he also stated that there was no vacant post. A court had ruled that she had to be reinstated for the school year 2012-2013, but this was not done. A court ruled in 2016 that as she had not been re-employed this was a very serious breach of court rulings. Finally, after all this time, Resurreción returned to her post as a teacher of religion from September 3rd. The Ministry of Education insisted that this had to be done, and finally the Bishop backed down in October last year although he still claimed that there was no vacant post for the teaching year 2017-2018. Resurreción has been awarded back pay from 2012.

Man Charged Over Mobility Scooter Police in Málaga were alerted that a man on a mobility scooter was travelling down the MA-21 which is a main motorway leading to the centre, at 10pm. Various motorists stated that vehicles had to swerve round him or brake heavily. Police went to the scene and told the 67yr old man that he was, in their opinion, a pedestrian, and so prohibited from entering the carriageway. The man refused to stop travelling down the road and he was arrested. A lawyer defended the man in court and stated that he had 70% handicap and needed the mobility scooter for basic transport. The lawyer pointed out that the mobility scooter had red lights at the back and white lights at the front that were illuminated, he was wearing a reflective jacket, and he posed no immediate danger to motorists. He claimed that the man couldn’t be guilty of any road traffic regulations as the police themselves considered he was a pedestrian. The court decided that he was guilty of ignoring lawful requests by police officers and fined him 480 Euros, but not any offence under the road traffic acts! Last year, the DGT (Spanish Traffic Police) issued guidelines that stated that on urban roads, people on mobility scooters could not drive down pavements that were intended for pedestrians. They stated that the speed attained was far in excess of walking speed, so the scooters had to travel down

the side of the road. There is obviously a very grey legal status for people on mobility scooters in Spain!

The 2018 Spanish Budget Just before the government changed hands, the Spanish budget for 2018 had finally been passed in parliament. There had been a lot of negotiation because the PP party led by Mariano Rajoy had been operating with only a minority in parliament. The new PSOE government led by the new Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez are still in the same position, but they intend to see out the natural parliamentary period up to 2020. Pensioners will receive an increase of 1.6% in general, and 3% in the case of those on low pensions. The 1.6% will be raised to 2.25% in 2019 and 2% in 2020. Pensioners used to have a normal rise in pensions in line with the cost of living increase every year, but this was stopped in 2012, and the annual rise has only been 0.25%. The pension increases were back dated to the beginning of the year. Another feature is that pay for the various police forces will be standardised. When large numbers were drafted into Catalonia at the time of the referendum it was very clear that the average pay was well behind the Catalonia Mossos d’Esquadra police. The amount of “free pay” for a person paying income tax has been raised from 12,000 Euros to 14,000 that will be put in place in June 2019 when income tax declarations are due for 2018. There is also a reduction in tax from 14,000 to 18,000 Euros of income. Workers will be able to claim up to 1,000 Euros annually for nursery fees, and there are increased allowances for disabled persons. Last month we stated that the ‘IVA’ (VAT) on cinemas tickets had been reduced from 21% down to 10%, but this only took effect on July 5th. It had been raised from 8% to 21% in 2012 along with all cultural activities including concerts, theatre and bullfights. These categories had the deduction in IVA in 2014 as income was drastically falling off. Tax on CDs, DVDs and electronic books will still be 21%. People winning money on lotteries will not have to pay tax on winnings of less than 10,000 Euros, and this has been raised from 2.500 Euros. Total investment in the ‘AVE’ (High speed train) has been raised to 8.5 billion Euros in 2018, the highest amount since 2013. Continued ....

In the News The Almería Cable Inglés El Cable Inglés (The English pier) was built in 1904 and juts out into the sea at Almería port. The Spanish King Alfonso XIII came to open it as it was considered to be of major importance. It was a discharge facility for trains from the iron ore mines at Alquife in Granada province, and the trains brought the iron ore to the port. The iron ore was discharged directly into the ships down hoppers, which meant an 8,000 ton ship could be loaded in just 10 hours. It was taken out of use in 1973, mostly because the price for iron ore had dramatically dropped. In 2012, the first phase of a restoration project was started when repairs were made to the structure, and it was repainted. A 3 million euro second phase has now been given the green light by the Junta de Andalucía (the governing body for Almería province) and central government has stated that the funds will be available shortly. The new Spanish Minister for Culture comes from Almería province, so it is anticipated the money will be forthcoming. Firstly, alterations will be made to give a flat platform, followed by the installation of a wide walkway and viewing areas complete with street lights and street furniture. The work is expected to take 18 months and a further phase is intended to provide an exhibition centre and restaurants. Although called the English pier, the cast iron used in the construction, that totalled 3,800 tons, came from the Glasgow Motherwell foundry. Rail Travel is Quicker! The company GoEuro that survey journey times in Europe is claiming that rail travel is often much quicker than flights. As an example, they compare the journey time from London to Paris. Despite the 80 minute flight time the total time getting to the airport from the centre of London, the set time needed before check-in, going through security, baggage collection time at the other end, and a journey into the centre of Paris, made the total time to be about 4hrs on average. The direct train journey gives a reduction in time of 1hr 40mins. The 300km flight from Brussels to Paris by train takes 1hr 20mins, compared to 5.5hrs total journey

time by air! This is because increased security requires a passenger to be at the airport 3hrs before a flight following the terrorist attack on March 22nd. This same time period is needed to fly from Brussels to London for the same reasons, which is a 2hrs 18mins train journey. On the 600km journey from Madrid to Barcelona it is claimed that going by train saves 1hr and 5mins. On other journeys such as Madrid to Seville, Rome to Milan, and Dusseldorf to Amsterdam, a rail journey reduces travel times by 1hr. The company who carried out the survey accept that the train journey times are those from high speed trains, but they point out that European rail journeys are in general very quick. For travellers who consider time costs money they point out that trains are the only logical choice.

Vueling Flight Delays at Barcelona The Spanish airport authority AENA is asking for explanations from Vueling as to why their aircraft habitually take off late at the El Prat airport. The low cost airline is part of the International Airline Group that includes British Airways and Iberia. El Prat airport is always very busy, but 37% of their flights are from Vueling. The company “Flightstats” claim that Vueling is in 44th place for delays in the list of 46 European airlines, and 41% of flights in July were an average of 61 minutes late. Apart from Vueling, flight delays of more than 15 minutes apply to 50% of all flights at El Prat airport. Vueling have replied that the poor July figures were entirely due to the French air traffic controllers’ strike and 80% of their flights fly over French airspace. They

Now, the Almería Fiscalía (Spanish crown prosecution service) is asking for a prison term of 12 years, and a ban on holding public office for 30 years, relating to the ex-mayor José García Navarro who took over from Rogelio Mena. Allegations that form the backbone of the court case are that he authorized work and awarded contracts without the required competitive quotes, and then created paperwork that appeared to show this had been done. Some of the documents that Rogelio Mena refused to supply related to the company Alcaina Estudio de Ingeniería, and the boss of this company is accused of corruption and illegal receipt of funds. A prison term of 6 years and a ban on engaging in similar work for 15 years is being requested. It is alleged that the legal representative of this company is the ex-mayor’s son-in-law who was also an Albox councillor for Works and Services at the time. By awarding contracts directly to this company without the correct adjudication it is alleged that the company received inflated sums of money. The council Secretary, who is supposed to ensure that all council matters are legal, is also in court, and a prison term of 10 years and a ban on holding public office for 14 years is being requested. The work that it is claimed was awarded illegally comes to 1.1 million euros, and relates to work done to the riverbed, sewage work, and water installations.

A Fake Marriage Scam Dismantled The Spanish National Police in Almería city have broken up a “fake marriage” organization and arrested 31 people including two lawyers from El Ejido. In Spain, a person can obtain Spanish nationality, or EU residency, if they are married to a Spaniard or an EU national. The allegations are that persons particularly from Morocco and Pakistan undertook fake marriages for sums of money that were typically 8,000 euros. The persons who “legalised” the stay of these people by entering into a false marriage were reputedly paid between 3,000 to 4,000 Euros. In any normal marriage between persons who then can became official citizens or residents in Spain, the parties have to satisfy the authorities that they actually know the other party, and justify their marriage. In this case various couples inscribed themselves on the ‘pareja de hecho’ register at town halls that is for people who form a domestic partnership. (In another section we comment on this legal status that is normally a very good idea for same sex or opposite sex partnerships). After being on this register they then applied to be married and avoided any indepth investigation. In 2017, the Spanish authorities in Almería city detected various irregularities in persons putting themselves on the pareja de hecho registers and the police mounted an investigation. Police claim that following a fake marriage, and a suitable period of time, various couples then petitioned for a divorce. A spokesperson commented that the number of fake marriages was “substantial” and enquiries were continuing. The Superspeed Train The UK company ‘Virgin Hyperloop’ have signed an agreement with the Spanish train company Adif to set up a “superspeed” train development project that will travel at 1,200km/h inside a closed tube. Virgin has chosen Spain because of their experience with the ‘AVE’ (Spanish high speed train), and they state that there are a large number of highly qualified engineers in Spain that will provide the 200-300 engineers that will be employed. The development will be carried out in Seville, and the train will travel down the tube with magnetic

Almería Request for Longest Prison Term Long prison terms in Spain are normally for 20, 30 or 40 years, except that for multiple offences, such as a serial killer, they can be various terms that run consecutively. A new prison term has been introduced that is entitled “prisión permanente revisable”, and this means that a prisoner with a very long prison term of 30-40 years can apply to be released every two years, after a period of between 25-35 years respectively. If this is denied because it is considered that they might reoffend, they stay in prison for following periods of two years that could be indefinitely. This is intended for criminal convictions such as genocide, repeat rapes, murder after kidnapping, murder of a minor, sexual violation of minors after imprisonment, murders by a criminal gang, and exotic offences such as assassination or attempted assassination of the Spanish monarch or member of the royal family. The Fiscalía (Spanish crown prosecution service) in Almería is asking for a prison term of this kind, the first one so far in Almería province. In January 2017, a man subjected a woman that he had briefly been in a relationship with, to rape, severe and repeated injuries that caused her death, and further injuries after she was dead. He intended to remove the victim and hide the body but neighbours had alerted the police because of continual screams. The man was well known to the police from a string of offences dating back to 2007 that included violence, and there were two court orders banning him from having any contact with two other women. Legal opinions regarding these types of prison sentences are divided. One point of view is that a permanent prison term without any fixed release date is too

harsh, but the other viewpoint is that this stops very violent prisoners from being able to prey on society if they show no remorse and may well reoffend. Women subject to domestic violence can ring 016 without any cost, and this is a specialist department that is operational 24hrs every day of the year, and the number does not show up on any subsequent mobile or landline bill. In response to any call where violence is currently taking place, the police will respond immediately and arrest the perpetrator.

Mercadona Purchases Gádor is seen as being a fairly small village in the Cabo de Gata area, but it is home to a large company, García Carrión, who produce gazpacho and salmorejo. Mercadona has added this company to the ones who produce the ‘Hacendado’ range of own brands. The company extends to 15,000m2 with an automated production line that is intended to produce 6 million litres in 2018. The raw materials mostly come from local producers and within as little as two hours from receiving them they are ready to be processed. The production line is operational Mondays to Thursdays so that the nonpasteurized gazpacho and salmorejo is shipped off the next day, and is intended to be purchased from Mercadona within 11 days. Companies that Mercadona choose to buy their product are on a continuing contract, providing the quality is maintained. Selling Off Property Portfolios As a result of the financial crisis in Spain, all the large banks found themselves the reluctant owners of properties where individuals or large construction companies were unable to pay their mortgages. Banco Sabadell has announced that it has sold off two very large amounts of housing and land to the US investment company Cerberus. The gross amount comes to 9 billion euros, and Sabadell are negotiating with Deutch Bank in Germany to offload property with a gross value of 2 billion euros. In December 2015, the total gross value of the property portfolio at Sabadell was 19 billion Euros, which after other sales came down to 13 billion euros in March this year. One of the reasons why Banco Popular was sold to Banco Santander for 1 euro with all the debts, was because Banco Popular had not sold off enough of their property bad debts. At the end of last year, Banco Santander sold 51% to the US investment company Blackstone, and CaixaBank have sold their entire portfolio to another US company Lone Star. The investment companies take the long term view that if they can buy property portfolios cheaply, the eventual rise in market value will give them a good return. They typically pay between 40-50% of the gross value of the properties, but the banks are then rid of them. The Central European Bank has been telling Spanish banks for years that they have to get rid of their property debts.

Petrol, Diesel and Other Fuels From October 12th, a new EU directive comes into operation, and all new vehicles will have a sticker adjacent to the filler cap, with identical stickers on petrol, diesel, and other fuels at service stations. There will be a circle for petrol with the code letters E5 (5% ethanol), E10 (10%), and E85 (85%), and the types of diesel fuel will have the code letters B7 (7% biodiesel), B10 (10%), and XTL (synthetic diesel) within a square. Vehicles that use hydrogen, natural gas, and liquid gas will have the corresponding stickers. The idea is that the manufacturers will be showing drivers the exact fuel they should use, without any confusion. Modern cars have different size petrol and diesel pipes behind the filler cap designed to stop motorists putting diesel in a petrol fuelled vehicle, and petrol in a diesel fuelled vehicle. Nevertheless, particularly on older vehicles, the wrong fuel can be put into the tank, which can be very expensive to drain off and clean engine parts if the vehicle has been started up. A big surprise, without precedent, has been a decision by the High Court of Andalucía that the noise coming from an outside terrace in the city centre was a personal intrusion and violated the rights of a neighbour who has repeatedly made complaints. Almería City Council has been ordered to withdraw the licence and pay the neighbour 600 Euros in compensation. The High Court also considered that the opening hours had not been enforced, giving an extra “nuisance”. The court pointed out that the city council had the right to grant or deny a licence for an outside terrace, but this had to be compatible with the surrounding neighbourhood where ordinary citizens lived. Almería City Council are legally bound to enforce the decision from the high court, but state that this is an isolated case. They do agree that noise levels in the old city area need to be controlled. Whilst this is the first time the High Court in Andalucía has ordered that a city centre establishment in Almería has to close their terrace, it has certainly set a precedent.

A Large Building Licence in Mojácar Mojácar council have approved a licence for a residential complex of 98 dwellings to be built by the company Neinor Península S.L.A. The houses will be built on the beach road where the company own a parcel of land of 15,800m2, and they will build a roundabout in front of the development. Neinor have already opened a sales office on the site which is opposite the car park beside the Tito beach bar / restaurant. This is the first major construction project for a very long time, but the developers obviously consider that the tide has turned and there will be buyers. Fake ‘Viagra’ Spanish customs officers at Madrid airport inspected a package being sent to a man in Huércal-Overa from India. X-rays revealed a large quantity of tablets that turned out to be 2,800 fake Viagra tablets. The customs officers sent the package on its way through the post and police were present when it was delivered. A 49yr old man was then arrested and charged with importing illegal substances. The tablets had been ordered from

the website of a company in India. Spanish Health officials point out that genuine Viagra tablets should not be taken by people who suffer from heart, brain, and certain eye problems, and medical advice should be obtained from a doctor before taking them. In certain cases they can interfere with other medication that has been prescribed. Fake Viagra tablets often contain various substances that can be a danger to health, and one company manufacturing these was found to be obtaining the blue colour by using printer ink! Last year the manufacturers of Viagra lost their sole manufacturing licence, so cheaper alternatives can now be obtained at chemists.

An ‘IKEA’ Agreement Spanish unions are fighting Amazon in Spain to improve working conditions and make thousands of employees on temporary contracts into permanent employees. ‘IKEA’ have signed an agreement with the main union that their workers belong to, that will apply to all employees. The working week has been agreed to be five days, with overtime at weekends. All employees will have 14 weekends entirely free so they do not have to work during these weekends if they are permanent contract employees, and 10 weekends if they are not normally working a full day every day of the week so considered to be part-time. The company will be shut on December 24th, 25th, and 31st, and January 1st, 5th, and 6th. The maximum time a worker is attending work has been set at 224 days

Petrol Cars Back in Fashion In the first half of 2018, the sales of petrol driven cars have been more than diesel ones, the first time for 20 years. There were 735,000 cars registered, and petrol ones made up 57%, with diesel fuelled cars only accounting for 37%, which is 13% less than last year. Vehicle manufacturers consider that as more and more cities restrict the circulation of diesel cars (although this only applies to older cars) the general public is associating diesel cars with being bad news. The other reason they give is that motorists are worried that there might be an increase in tax on diesel fuel, so if this did happen petrol would be cheaper. This is not just a trend in Spain as there are similar sales figures in other countries in Europe. The sales there in the same period show that diesel fuelled cars are now only 44% of sales, petrol cars are 49%, with electric or hybrid cars making up the total number. Ferdinand Alonso Announces Retirement Ferdinand Alonso, considered one of the most experienced Formula 1 racing drivers, has announced that he will retire from Formula 1 at the end of this season. He did leave a slight possibility of returning to the McLaren team if they overcame their problems and became a major player again. He has been struggling for months to achieve a decent finish in any race, and has consistently come in at

about 12th place. McLaren thought they would be solving many problems by changing their engine supplier from Honda to Renault, but other mechanical faults keep showing up and it is rare that both the McLaren cars finish a race. His highest position this year has been in 8th place, mostly owing to cars in front retiring, but he won the Silverstone British Grand Prix in 2011 and the Spanish Grand Prix in 2013. This year, Alonso entered the 24hr Le Mans race and together with his two team mates they came first, driving a car from Toyota. This is the first time since 2009 that a Spanish driver has been part of the winning team. Fernando commented that he had not seen himself driving a car on the many large television screens before, and it was a strange experience. It appears that Toyota will want him to race for them in 2019, and in the last Formula 1 season McLaren gave Fernando permission to miss one race, so he could compete in the Indianapolis 500 race in the US. Unfortunately, he had to retire with engine problems, an occurrence with which he is very familiar! During this August he competed at the Silverstone World Endurance Championship 6hr race and came first followed by his teammate in second place. They were both driving Toyota cars, but after the race was over the three Toyota cars competing were disqualified for having “nonconforming technical issues” under the front of the car where there was an under floor skid-block!

“Pareja De Hecho” Partnerships Spain recognized same-sex marriages in 2005 which give the same rights as heterosexual marriages. Another category of partnership is “Pareja de hecho” (domestic partnerships). Almost all town halls have a register, and non-married partners can ask to be put on this register. This has important benefits particularly as regards tax if there is property in joint names, and a surviving partner will inherit the other 50%, as Spain does not recognize the category of “common law” partnerships without any legal basis. Mojácar Archaeological Dig Experts from Granada University have been conducting archaeology surveys and excavations on the site of the old Mojácar village called “La Vieja” that was abandoned in the 13th century. It is not known why the Mojácar village was moved to its present location and one theory is that there was a major earthquake. All the departments at Cantoria including the various factories cover an area of 2.3 million m2. Present investment plans are to increase their efficiency in all areas by investing 380 million Euros up to the end of 2019. 52% of this expansion plan has now been achieved and one of their most progressive products is Dekton, a synthetic material with variety of uses. Demand has been sufficient to plan to open another plant dedicated to this product. Their research and development department spent 91 million Euros over a four year period to perfect it. In 2017 the company invoiced 901 million Euros, 8% more than in 2016, and sales to Europe went up 20%, and 12% within Spain and Portugal. Net profit for 2017 was stated to be 128 million Euros. Cosentino has signed an agreement with the enormous ship container company Maersk who will take containers from Almería port to Algeciras that is their main “hub” where they will be sent on to other countries in five continents.

‘Maersk’ Comes to Almería Port The enormous container ship company Maersk is now coming to Almería port every Wednesday. Containers are then taken to Algeciras which is their main hub for onward shipping all over the world. Apart from these destinations, Maersk also go to Tenerife, Las Palmas, and Agadir in Morocco. One of their regular customers who has signed an agreement with the shipping company is the stone and synthetic product company Cosentino based in Cantoria, who at present have had to use the ports at Valencia and Algeciras. Two ships will come to Almería port with a capacity for 450 containers, and some of them will be refrigerated to enable fresh produce to be loaded. A GPS system will track the position of each of these special containers and monitor the temperature. The Director General for the Mediterranean operations, Marcos Hansen, states that the refrigerated containers have needed major investment but the demand is considered to be substantial.

So Now You Know... Hair Dryers The first hair dryers functioned with a vacuum cleaner initially in the early 1900s. A hose could be connected to the exhaust where air was blown out and a nozzle at the other end gave a more intense air flow. In 1920 the first hair dryer that was selfcontained was introduced, but it was extremely heavy and came with a support that was fixed to a base plate. Over the years there was not much of a change in the design, but improvements in the motors meant that they became properly portable and hand held. In 1951 a model was introduced that blew air into a plastic bonnet that a woman put over her head and these became very popular. Trampolines George Nissan was a US inventor who went to a circus in 1929. He noticed that the trapeze artistes dropped down to a safety net and they then rebounded into the air doing somersaults and other fancy moves. He decided that gymnasts could do the same thing and perform complex moves on the rebound. Together with Larry Griswold he made a version with a canvas sheet attached to a frame with springs all the way round and they patented this in 1935. He eventually owned 40 patents relating to gymnasiums and fitness equipment. In the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney it was recognized as a skilled sport and christened “trampolining”. Carpet Sweepers In the 1870s, Anna and Melville Bissell owned a pottery and china shop at Grand Rapids in Michigan. Many of the items arrived packed in sawdust and Anna had to take a long time brushing it up from the carpeted floor. Melville was mechanically inclined and he set about to produce a carpet sweeper that easily collected the sawdust. Other people were very impressed with his design and Anna and Melville patented it in 1876. They opened a factory making “The BISSELL Carpet Sweeper” in 1883 near their shop. Melville died in 1889, but Anna took over the company and is considered to be the first US corporate female CEO.

Yoyos Dolls are considered to be the earliest toys, and the yoyo is probably the next oldest. They may well have been invented in China but in a museum in Athens there are yoyos made of terracotta that go back to about 500 B.C. Pictures of yoyos going back thousands of years have been found on the walls of Egyptian temples. The first patent was taken out in 1886 in England by James L. Haven and Charles Hettrich and related to how the string was fixed onto the central pin. Pedro Flores formed a company in the US at Santa Monica in 1920 to make wooden yoyos and in 1929 employed 600 workers who produced 300,000 yoyos daily. The “Etch a Sketch” André Cassagnes was a French electrical technician and inventor. He was experimenting with powdered aluminium in his garage one day and noticed that a pencil point made lines in the powder. He made a frame with a stylus underneath the powder backing and called it “L’Ecran Magique” (a magic screen). He took it to an international toy fair in Nuremburg in 1959 and the Ohio Art Company decided to take a chance and buy the design. They called it the “Etch A Sketch” with a red frame and two white knobs, and it immediately took off. It was subsequently hailed as “one of the hundred best toys of the 20th century”. Burglar Alarms In Roman times, geese were used to warn that there might be an intruder, and guard dogs were common. The Importance of Music

f we hear one of our favourite songs or pieces of music it is processed through the brain in several different areas. If we hear music we have not heard before our brain will still classify the style as being poprock, jazz, a solo singer, or an orchestra. Playing an instrument involves even more parts of the brain that controls our fingers, mouth, or other muscles. A study as long ago as 1966 was made with young American children divided into two groups. One of them was children who were not progressing well in mathematics, reading or writing. This group was played music during lessons in their own classroom. After only six months this group had substantially improved in all three areas, to the same level or above the other group. This study has been repeated many times with the same result in various countries. David Bueno is a Genetic Biologist at Barcelona University who is in close contact with 2,500 experts and he considers that Music, Art, and Physical Education are an important part of a school curriculum, but particularly music. He claims that music is not given enough prominence in Spanish schools. In the Canary Islands young children in primary education, aged 6-12, are taught music for 83 minutes a week, but in Andalucía (including Almería province), Madrid, Murcia, and Ceuta and Melilla it is only about 45 minutes a week. The time music is taught in many other countries is much longer, with 120 minutes a week in Germany. In those with advanced Alzheimer’s they still respond to music by laughing, or in some cases crying, but their memory cells are given a big boost. The other therapeutic use of music is in relation to persons who have suffered a stroke. If they still have some arm and hand movements they recover this function sooner when exposed to “music therapy”. Listening to music still gives some slight improvements in stroke victims who have only a small amount of arm or hand movement, and in people suffering from a severe stroke, music is one of the very few things that give any improvement whatsoever.

Almería Province in 2040

he Spanish Institute of Statistics and Population Trends have published their predictions between now and 2040 throughout Andalucía. As regards Almería province they anticipate an increase in the population of 65,000 people by 2040 making a total of 772,000. This is 9% more, and whilst in Málaga province they predict another 69,500 people this is only 4% more than the existing numbers. Another prediction (which is the worst scenario) is that if another large centre of population emerges, similar to Roquetas de Mar or El Ejido, the population by 2040 might be as high as 822,000. The ‘AVE’ (high speed train) is due to arrive in Almería in 2023.

Central government will have to address the large rise in pensioners in Almería province leading up to 2040, but the make-up of the population will be very different if 26% are over the age of 65. Older persons need more health care so the cost of this will go up with more doctors and hospital beds needed. The amount of money in circulation in Almería province will drop, and this may well affect the viability of businesses. With such a high percentage of elderly people retail outlets might well have fewer customers with money to spend. Businesses selling mobility equipment for the elderly will almost certainly increase!

Apart from Almería province having the highest increase, the prediction is that the present 15% of people over the age of 65 will rise to 26% in 2040, so more than 1 in 4 people will be pensioners. The birth rate dropped soon after the 2008 construction crisis, followed by the 2012 financial crisis, and the study sees no evidence at present of a return to a substantially higher birth rate in future years. The fact that more women are deciding to have a career rather than motherhood also influences this pessimism. There are eight provinces in Andalucía and the predicted rise in population in Seville province is only just over 1,000 people by 2040. In other provinces, they predict a decrease of as much as 10,000 in Cádiz, 36,000 in Córdoba, and 57,000 in Jaén. They base this on the fact that there is less industry in Córdoba and Jaén and the main occupation is agriculture. Present figures are that the population in both these provinces are already falling as young people are leaving to find work elsewhere. The increase in the number of pensioners is a worry throughout Spain as life expectancy is steadily increasing. 2018 figures for Spain are that the average life expectancy of men and women is 81.8 years, compared to 60.8 in1940, 65.6 in 1950, and 66.6in 1960, with further increases in following decades. Older people are now healthier with a more active lifestyle, diet, and better healthcare.

The “expected” predicted rise in population in Almería province is 716,000 by 2020, 751,000 by 2030, and 772,000 by 2040. The number of pensioners is predicted to rise to 20% in 2030, and 26% in 2040. At present the male population of Almería province is 50.6%, so 49.4% are female. These percentages are not predicted to show any more than a very small change in 2040, with only a very small increase in the male population. All these figures are “estimated” numbers, but with population trends that are considered to be reliable. Official figures come from the number of persons on the ‘padrón’ (the official lists of residents in every municipality), and figures from the registry of births, deaths, and marriages. “Brexit” does not form part of their calculations!

Andalusi Festival The 10th Andalusi Festival in Bédar proved to be the best to date. All the local residents, young and old, participated in the parade through the village, helped organise the special feast, or made costumes for the children. The parade was extremely glamorous because professionally made costumes were also hired for the adults.

Mojácar’s Beach Safety Campaigns With Mojácar´s beaches busy and tourist accommodation full, there has been a reinforcement of municipal services to ensure the summer passes peacefully and safely. Mojácar Council has had 25 lifeguards watching over the beaches through the day, with two jet

Community News skis, a zodiac, an ambulance and a support vehicle at their disposal. Additionally, there are amphibious chairs for those with disabilities and a designated lifeguard who can accompany anyone requesting the service safely in and out of the water. Spread over seven of the town’s beaches, the rescue units, equipped with defibrillators, oxygen, spinal boards and first aid kits, have been giving all the necessary support for these professionals to carry out their work. It is vitally important that beach goers pay attention to instructions given by the lifeguards and respect the green, yellow and red flags flying daily. The company Ebone, which is contracted by Mojácar Council to ensure beach safety, has also been providing courses for youngsters throughout the summer called ´Socorristas Junior´ providing a fun, educational opportunity for children to see at first hand the lifeguards’ work. As well as instilling the dangers of not observing beach rules, they learn how to call 112, perform basic resuscitation and do the Heimlich manoeuvre. They also got a chance to see all the life-saving equipment put into action in cases of accident and rescue on the beach and in the water. At El Lance beach, over 70 children and adults turned up for the last course and showed great interest in everything the lifeguards said and demonstrated. Rescue drills were also carried out with willing ´victims´, along with an ambulance and the Local Police, when the effectiveness of the services was reinforced and checked, whilst also showing those on the beach the practices and techniques that are followed in the case of emergency. One such simulation took place at the Venta del Bancal beach.

The patrolled areas have been focused on the beach bar zone, in the afternoon and evening, which has the largest influx of people. For Emmanuel Agüero Leclerc, Mojácar Councillor for Security, this new Canine Unit is all part of a modernization plan for the Local Police, with officers taking part in training courses to ensure greater effectiveness, both for the public and themselves. With the high season very much in mind, the Head of the Local Police met with the Mayor and the Councillor for Public Safety to plan and review procedures and action for the busy summer weeks which saw increased number of officers in Mojácar through collaborative agreements with other towns. A total of 12 vehicles make up the official fleet, which includes all-terrain, basic patrol cars, cars with special detention equipment, unmarked cars, an off road 4 x 4, as well as all-terrain motorbikes, and newly acquired urban scooters. There are 23 Local Police officers in Mojácar’s force who, as part of their day to day work, are empowered to put into force campaigns from the General Directorate of Security within the town, including breathalyser controls, the use of safety helmets and belts, as well as child protection in vehicles.

Tickets are 12 Euros in advance or 15 Euros at the door. ‘Chicago Life’ El Musical comes to the Teatro Cervantes, Almería city, on October 12th at 10pm, performed by La Compñía de Teatro Musica de España and features the best songs from Broadway Musicals. Three nuns including the Mother Superior are killed in a car crash and St. Peter is at the gates of heaven to let them in. He tells them that as they are nuns they only have to answer one question instead of the normal three. He asks the first nun, “What was the name of the first woman on Earth?” She replies, “That was Eve” and St Peter tells her she can enter heaven. He asks the second nun, “What was the name of the place where Eve lived?” She thinks for a minute and then replies, “It was the Garden of Eden”. St. Peter tells her that that is the right answer and lets her through the pearly gates. He tells the last nun who is the Mother Superior that her question has to be a bit harder, and asks her, “What were the first words that Eve said to Adam when she saw him in the garden?” The Mother Superior replied, “I am not sure I know the answer to this question”. She thought for a while and then said….. “That’s a hard one”. St Peter said, “Congratulations, that’s the right answer, go and join your sisters”.

A husband and wife were driving through Louisiana. As they approached Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town’s name. They argued back and forth, and then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Down Memory Lane An old man went to the college that he went to when he was a youth. He knocked on room number 3 and said to the young man, "May I come in. I lived in this very room fifty years ago when I studied in this college". The young man let him in and the old man examined the room, fondly remembering everything. The Old Man A 90-year-old man goes for a physical and all of his tests come back normal. The doctor says, “Larry, everything looks great. How are you doing mentally and emotionally? Are you at peace with God?” Larry replies, “God and I are tight. He knows I have poor eyesight, so he’s fixed it so when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, poof! The light goes on. When I’m done, poof! The light goes off.” “Wow, that’s incredible,” the doctor says. A little later in the day, the doctor calls Larry’s wife. “Bonnie,” he says, “Larry is doing fine! But I had to call you because I’m in awe of his relationship with God. Is it true that he gets up during the night, and poof, the light goes on in the bathroom, and when he’s done, poof, the light goes off?” “Oh sweet Jesus”, exclaims Bonnie. “He’s peeing in the refrigerator again!”

A Winning Streak A man was in the lobby of a hotel in Las Vegas and was behind a blonde at the drinks machine. He saw her put in a dollar and press a button and out came a cola. She put in another dollar and out came a root beer. She kept doing this, becoming more and more excited with every can she got. Finally, the man tapped her on her shoulder and asked if she would mind letting him buy a drink. The blonde responded, "Are you crazy? I'm not leaving this machine while I'm still winning!"

Flying over Seattle a helicopter pilot had a malfunction of all his electronics and communication equipment. Because of low cloud he had no reference points on the ground and no idea where he was. He got the co-pilot to write on a big sign, “WHERE AM I?” and they flew close to a skyscraper and the co-pilot hung the sign out of the cockpit window. After he had circled round again the pilot saw they had put a large sign in one of their windows that read, “YOU’RE IN A HELICOPTER”. The pilot waved, descended through the cloud and made a perfect landing at the heliport. The co-pilot asked him, “How on earth did you know where you were from that stupid sign?” The pilot replied, “It was technically correct, but completely useless, so I knew straight away it was the Microsoft Building!”

An Alternative Solution Question Time A proud and confident genius makes a bet with an idiot. The genius says, “Hey idiot, every question I ask you that you don't know the answer to, you have to give me 5 dollars. And if you ask me a question and I can't answer it I will give you 5,000 dollars.” The idiot says, “Okay.” The genius then asks, “How many continents are there in the world?” The idiot doesn't know and hands over the 5 dollars. The idiot says, “Now I ask: what animal stands on two legs but sleeps with three?” The genius searches his brain very hard for the answer, but gives up and hands over the 5,000 dollars. The genius says, “Dang it, I lost. But what was the answer to your question?” The idiot replies, “I don’t know”, and hands him 5 dollars.
