BVI

30th Anniversary 1982 - 2011

Welcome,

to the 2011 BVI CYS Boat Show

The BVI Boat Show, along with Charter Yacht Society of the BVI, continues to showcase how charter yachting and tourism as a whole positively affect and benefit many industries in the Territory. This annual event also creates potential business opportunities within the Virgin Islands’ economy. The Government of the Virgin Islands welcomes boating enthusiasts locally, regionally and internationally to the Territory for the 30th Annual BVI Charter Yacht Boat Show. The Virgin Islands is home to many of the luxury crewed yachts and this boat show is definitely an added value to the development of our yachting industry and economy. This event provides the platform for valuable networking opportunities among boat owners, crews, brokers, maintenance companies and caterers. Additionally, this camaraderie helps to support and strengthen Government’s multi-pronged approach to tourism development. We hope that this year’s boat show is exciting, memorable and filled with ‘unique’ experiences as you learn more about the capability of various models and types of sailing vessels in which you can experience the Virgin Islands’ marine environment. While you are enjoying the boat show, we invite you to take advantage of our marine parks, excellent snorkeling spots, striking majestic scenery and award-winning local cuisine. On behalf of the Government, I wish the entire charter boat fleet a delightful experience this year. We look forward to being the destination of choice for charter guests for years to come.

Hon. Ralph T. O’Neal OBE Premier and Minister for Tourism

Going Green

Creative Concepts for the Yachting Industry Initiatives. This is a movement that can only spread as more crewed yachts see the great benefits, not only to the environment but to the discriminating charter yacht guest, who practices ecological awareness on land and expects to see it on their crewed yacht experience as well.

For the last two years the BVI Charter Yacht Society with the help of Sailors for the Sea (a US-based marine environmental group) and Green VI, a local environmental awareness organization, have worked together to set a “Green” standard for the charter yacht community. Support also comes from eco-businesses in the community. Clear Water, a local water distribution company sets up a water station at the main registration table in the Gazebo, so the visiting brokers can use their CYS aluminum reusable water bottles for top ups. Green Technology a local provider of biodegradable cups, plates and eating utensils provides the cups needed for the Soda-Maker demonstration and Caribbean Coffee offered through out the show. Each year we look for new and creative ways to get more yachts on board with the Green

10

C h a rt e r YaC h t S o C I e t Y 2011

A “wave” of support from other yacht-related businesses has really brought the Green message home this year. Trish Cronan of the Charter Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA) has helped form a movement to reduce the usage of plastic water bottles on yachts. The Yacht Spec Sheets have been redesigned to include how the crew handles onboard drinking water. Options include supplying quality drinking water onboard, reducing plastic waste by buying one gallon or larger water bottles and providing reusable water bottles for charter guests. Several yachts have come up with the idea of including a “fun and environmentally helpful beach clean-up” as part of their activity list for clients. Ideas are endless and CYS hopes to make Going Green a fun competition as part of the Yacht Show in upcoming years. To let you know that we are continually on the cutting edge of the “Go Green Sail Blue” movement, this year’s Best in Show awards are fashioned with recycled glass from the Green VI Glassworks Center in Cane Garden Bay, the Captain/Broker bags are made from recycled plastic bottles and CYS has switched to Ecowrist bands for our 30th year celebrations.

CYS History

Through the Eyes of Seasoned Sailors

the Charter Yacht Society’s founding members might prefer the term “seasoned,” which sounds a lot better than “old” and more aptly captures the spice of personalities represented. The original list from 1982 when the society was formed contained five names including Geoff Browning and Jim Fuller. However, more well-known in the BVI Yachting community are Duncan [and Annie] Muirhead of Cuan Law, Mick [and Annie] Gardner former owners of White Squall and Dick Nichol of Wanderlust. This amiable and self-proclaimed “motley crew” got together this year to share some memories of the days when the crewed charter yacht industry was a fledgling idea comprised of a few yachts plying the BVI waters trying to eek out a living. In the 1970s as the group shared, there were no indigenous BVI charter boats because of a lack of provisioning. Most charters based themselves in the USVI and sailed BVI waters. By the early 80s there were enough individual crewed charter boats to gather as one voice and form a society to speak with the government about the charter industry and protect it from new laws that might affect its members. As the industry began to grow with large corporately owned charter fleets, the society felt it was important to preserve part of the market for owner-operators. In the old days when communication was limited to VHF radio, everyone helped each other out. If someone broke down or needed a part other yachts close by would come to 18

C h a rt e r YaC h t S o C I e t Y 2011

their aid. This was a close-knit charter yacht community that “had each other’s backs,” or should we say sterns. “From 12 to 1 pm, we had what we called the Children’s Hour. We would all get on 2038 Khz on double sideband AM and chat about what we were doing.” Duncan explained. “It was great fun.” The sailing group also got together for special occasions. They recalled one Christmas Eve when the yachts met up at the Bight, Norman Island and anchored there rafting together to party. In the night a wind came up swinging all the boats around and in the morning it took a half a day to untangle all the anchors and rode twisted together. In 1983 the first BVI Charter Yacht Show hosted solely by CYS featured 36 boats. “You have to realize, we had no faxes or Internet then, so, we had to run the show by the seat of our pants,” Annie Muirhead laughed. The show, which brings together brokers and yachts with crew has been an annual event ever since. Today yacht registration has grown to 70 plus boats, filling every available slip at Village Cay Marina. Taking over the helm in 1996, first as secretary of the Charter Yacht Society, later as Executive Director is Janet Oliver whose introduction to the BVI, was as a crewmember

on M/V Tropic Bird. Janet’s role is not only as an organizer for the 4-day show, but as an intermediary and spokesperson for the needs of the independent charter yacht operators in the BVI. Attending meetings, assisting crew in navigating government offices, networking with industry partners and marketing the industry are all facets of a day’s work. “I love my job, though my days often don’t go as scheduled. It is bit like sailing, I start on one tack and end on another,” Janet laughs.

This year, the Charter Yacht Society celebrates its 30th anniversary. To add a fresh kick to the event, CYS is rolling out the new Dining On Deck cookbook; a collaboration of member chefs unveiling their favorite recipes. In Janet’s words, we look back fondly on our nautical roots, but also ever forward to what lies ahead for our luxurious floating villas on the beautiful waters of the BVI.
