We attempt to consistently evolve and while the astute among our readers may have noticed small structural amendments in the print publication over the last few months, we assure you, this is all toward an improved and more functional publication. You may have already seen the revamped website – an effort to keep our product pristine yet up to date with contemporary features; take a peek at bvipropertyyacht.com Of course at this period of time, there is another change going on. The slow season; dreaded by some and fully welcomed by others; a time when tourism slows down and the Territory gradually morphs into a ghost town by September. While this may seem rather dreary, we urge residents and visitors to see the phenomenal positives of the slower months. This is the point when you can have a barbecue on BVI Sandy Spit with friends and family. Visit one of the BVI’s luxurious spas unencumbered by the usual high volumes of clients. In this issue, as part of our ‘change’ theme, we jumped across to the USVI to visit two of the most incredible properties we have had the pleasure of reviewing: The Estate at Spring Bay & Sunsi Beach, and One Beach Road. The first consideration in preparing a property for sale is ‘curb appeal’ – when approaching a property, how does the exterior look? Is there debris in the yard? Is the landscaping overgrown? Does the doorway and front of the building need a coat of paint?

Sometimes the cost of improving a property is minimal and just requires some effort. When arriving at a property, a potential buyer develops a first impression, so let it be a positive one. A property with attractive curb appeal will definitely assist in facilitating a sale because it immediately instils confidence of the interior’s appearance in the potential buyer’s mind.

Like it or not,

the BVI is centrally located on the hurricane belt of the Atlantic Ocean. Every summer when these waters heat up, the air above the sea rises. Suspended water particles then cool, condense and precipitate, forming localised squalls. These start to spiral as they get larger, generating tropical storms and ultimately hurricanes.

2013 had an unusually low amount of activity, which was linked to exceptionally dry air in the main hurricane formation region of the Atlantic off the coast of Africa. We were therefore spared for another year from any major storm damage. It would be nice to believe the expert predictions of a quiet 2014 season, but we should be cautious of complacency and be prepared.

Hurricane Season is officially June 1 to November 30, so many visiting yachts leave before this time as their insurance policy will not cover windstorm damage in this area during this period. The ‘Jackline Policy’ observed by insurance companies, states that “the northern tropical storm zone is comprised of the waters and territories located between 010°50’ and 031°00’ North latitude and between 030°00’ and 100°00’ West longitude”.

Not long ago, the Zone’s southern boundary was up at 012°40’N, making Grenada, Tobago or the ABC Islands favoured ports of refuge, but when Hurricane Ivan devastated that southern strip in September 2004, the line was moved further south. Inside the Zone, we pay an extra premium, so we should help ourselves out by following these guidelines.

1. Determine the time and effort it will take to run through your hurricane plan and preparation list 2. Keep all documents, insurance papers, recent photos and/or videos of your boat, and inventory of equipment in a safe place off the boatoat 3. Understand your marina’s rental agreement and know your and their responsibilities and liabilities 4. Move your boat 48 hours ahead of the storm to an identified/certified hurricane hole e.g. Paraquita Bay in Tortola 5. If you haul out, lash the boat to the cradle and secure web straps to ground screws; fill the bilge with water to weigh it down if the boat is light weight 6. If you leave the boat on the dock you must consider damage from storm surge. Position the boat centrally in the slip and lead lines long to absorb the surge. Avoid lines jarring and pulling out the cleats 7. Double all lines. Use your thickest lines. Cover all lines at chafing points with rubber hose or rags. Note that nylon line will stretch up to 10% of its length. Use a round turn and two half hitches not a bowline around pilings so the knot tightens but won’t chafe

8. Use all your fenders. Attach them to strong stanchion bases and cleats.

Rig them horizontal around pilings and vertical on flush face dock walls.

Make a fender board for greatest protection 9. Remove all loose equipment from the deck (sails, bimini, cushions, winch handles, radios, antennas, instrument covers, dorades, dinghy outboard engine) 10. Lash down anything that must stay (boom, tiller, cockpit table flaps, running rigging)

11. If the dinghy cannot be well stowed or lashed down, deflate the air chambers and sink it until after the storm passes

12. Seal all openings with duct tape to enhance their watertight integrity.

Ensure cockpit drains are clear. Close all but main engine sea cocks

13. Fill fuel tanks. Clean fuel filters. Clean bilges. Charge batteries. Turn off all loads but the automatic bilge pump 14. If you have to be on anchor or mooring, reduce your windage to absolute minimum. Rig all anchors with the heaviest to the direction you expect strongest wind and swell. Know your ground tackle, use all your scope and back down hard when setting. Guard against chafe. Remove trip lines 15. Do not stay on board if you can avoid it.

The absolute key to protecting your boat from the effects of high wind and storm surge is proper planning, preparation and timely action, so make your plan well ahead of any storm and practice it.

The Department of Disaster Management in the BVI employ the theme, “It is better to prepare and prevent rather than to repair and repent.” – S. Thomas 1856. If we are to honour the motto of the BVI then indeed we shall be vigilant. Good luck with your planning.

The summer time in the BVI presents my favourite season for enjoying the BVI by water – some might say this is the best sailing experience you can get because you are not only in the sailing capital of the world, you are also arguably picking the best time.

While the winter months are the most popular for visitors owing to flight from painful climates, frozen wastelands, long dark days, and angry depressed people deprived of the sunshine, I do not actually find that the winter months offer the best of the BVI.

As a lifelong sailor and lover of the water, I find winter too cold, too windy, and too rough to really enjoy the passion I hold so dearly. Sure there’s fun to be had – strong trades make fast sailing, big swell creates awesome surfing, and the crowds of tourists fashion the best beach parties of the year, but perceptive Virgin Island residents will agree that the great times are when it’s a little warmer, a little quieter and the trades back down to 10-12kts many days; those winter storms stop sweeping out from the USA so the swell is flat, forming warm, crystal-clear water for excellent diving and snorkelling.

To put the proverbial ‘icing on the cake’, prices are often better in the summer with steep discounts on hotels, tours, charters and flights. The bars and restaurants often have specials in attempts to rouse continued traffic as well so, in that concise wrap up, we know which is indisputably the best season to be in BVI – now let’s talk about the summer season’s activity.

If you already own a boat then it’s going to be much easier for you to take advantage of the BVI summer months and its flat seas – try out some north side or outer island anchorages that are not normally considered safe for overnight use during the regular season.

A couple of spots I recommend trying are Monkey Point on Guana Island, or any of the Dogs for real adventure. As always, be sure to anchor in clean white sand, and when exploring these uncommon anchorages, be exceedingly careful about not just where your anchor goes, but also where the chain lies – do not damage the coral or grasses which you worked so hard to come and see. www.bvipropertyyacht.com

Another excellent summer activity, particularly as we have a week long holiday in August which often gifts us with calm weather, is to run to St Martin. It’s not far, and with the likelihood of the trades being completely smooth, the run over will be much more reasonable than normal – specifically thinking of motorboats in this instance.

But dear reader, I know some of you are lamenting the fact you are boatless and perhaps I’ve invoked a little frustration about these great things you won’t be able to do – fear not.

The summer months also offer the opportunity for the boat-less to get on the water cheaper than ever. Charters, boat rentals, and even boats themselves all sell for great value rates in the summer months.

Companies such as the Moorings offer steep discounts to Virgin Island residents during the ‘off season’, enticing a continuation in water activity throughout the year.

One of the cheapest ways to get on the water year round, and to learn to sail if you do not know yet, is to join the Royal BVI Yacht Club, which for its very low membership fee gets you free access to the entire fleet of club owned boats, including five-man IC24s, two-Man 420’s, Single (or double) Laser Sailboats and more.

Being on a boat in the summer is about as good as it gets in the BVI – warm days, secluded harbours, and excellent clear water. It’s what yachting should be all year round and it’s definitely sufficient to provoke the envy of sailors abroad.

I’m more than a little bit of a ‘boat nerd’ and can get a bit heavy on that side, but I acknowledge that some just do not enjoy the yachting world.

That in mind, I can suggest that a great land based activity to do is to try staying on other islands.

Just like our islands here experience less traffic in the summer months, our US sisters do as well and this can be a great season to get ‘off the rock’ and visit places such as St John where many hotels including Caneel Bay and Gallows Point extend their local resident summer discounts to BVI dwellers as well. This opens up a whole extra region to enjoy while the summer slows.

Whatever you choose to do with the extra free time, better weather, and quieter months of the summer, be sure to keep it a secret – we don’t want everyone around the world finding out about the best sailing season on the globe..

A brand spanking new 2013build yacht, Aletheia recently joined the immense host

of charter vessels in BVI waters. A stunning boat in pristine condition, she is maintained by her very first crew, Captain Donald Harper, his wife First-Mate/ Chef Audrey Harper, and Steward/Deckhand Kyle Harper.

Aletheia, the Greek word for ‘disclosure’, ‘truth’ or more accurately ‘the state of not being hidden,’ stands by its meaning in gifting guests aboard with a sincere experience in divine luxury and no restraint on service.

The vessel—a Victoria 67—is a catamaran designed by naval architect Olivier Racoupeau, built in the Fountaine Pajot yard, with its “urban chic” interior designed by Isabelle Racoupeau, and the exterior planned under Berret-Racoupeau.

At a comfortable speed of 12 knots, the yacht has logged approximately 7000 nautical miles to date, travelling from France to the USA and making trips between the BVI, St Thomas, St Martin, and Guadeloupe.

Holding 10 guests in five en suite staterooms, including a Master Suite with a vast rainwater-style shower, the yacht has already catered to visitors on an international scale. Guests hailing from Europe to the USA have enjoyed the comforting queen-size beds, spacious bathrooms, and fantastically expansive on-board living spaces.

Additional notches on their ‘green’ ethos are found in the fact that the yacht uses biodegradable cleaning agents, encourages reef-safe products, is equipped with rain catchers, and utilises biodegradable corn bags in place of traditional black plastic bags. Hygienic aluminium bottles are exercised instead of plastic bottles and further, the yacht is fitted with a modern reverse osmosis filter system, producing its own clean, great-tasting drinking water.

for as long as we have has allowed us to sample some of the best BBC’s (Baileys, Banana Colada), Bushwackers and Mudslides around. Our love of these chocolaty concoctions alongside, bananas, coffee and coconut has inspired us to create a masterpiece in cocktails that could be the best beverage you will have ever tasted.

On our sailing catamaran Lolalita, before every charter, we get to know guests through a preference sheet – this precious document is our gateway into each guests’ customised, personally-tailored vacation.

We acquire this information from our upcoming guests not only because it’s vital to our understanding of how we can best prepare for their vacation, but also because some of them are extremely entertaining.

One of my favourites included a discussion about a giant pet chicken—we never quite figured that one out, but we sure had fun with that particular group. My other favourite introduced me to a phrase I now use regularly: Blender Olympics.

Learning this phrase, it instantly made sense and became very dear to me, because in all delectable honesty, the Virgin Islands is a haven for this tasty sport.

Many a hot, sunny day, I’ve sat on a bar stool, mesmerised by the ‘slinging’ of alcohol into whirring, icy blades, anticipating the gorgeous, refreshing concoction that will soon fill a curiously-shaped glass.

Of course it’s never just one drink, but many and of various flavours.

In essence, it’s an art form and a delicious one! With that in mind, we welcome you to a drink we fashioned from our love and experience of the islands. It’s been very popular with our guests so without further ado, here is...

1 oz Baileys 1 oz Kahlua 2 oz Dark Rum 1 oz Cream of Coconut ½ ripe banana (frozen if possible) 1-2 scoops vanilla ice cream

1 cup ice Chocolate Syrup Ice Meyer’s Rum Maraschino cherry

In a blender combine Baileys, Kahlua, dark rum, cream of coconut, banana, vanilla ice cream, and a healthy squirt of chocolate syrup. Blend up and add ice, ice cream, or more dark rum (or all three) as needed.

In a clear, tall glass—at least 8oz—drizzle chocolate sauce up and down the inside of the glass. Pour your Monkey Lola mixture into the glass; top with a Meyer’s Rum floater and a cherry.

Best enjoyed with your toes in the sand.

Utilising the most innovative and effective neuroscience approaches to shift ingrained perceptions and manifest positive changes, the company aims to grant clients the opportunity to advance in their life and business goals.

Attending a class in The Evolution of You Workshop Series titled Making Time for Success last month, I enjoyed the experience; hearing the professional perceptions of the workshop coordinator Dr Lynda Reid and the concepts of fellow attendees, we discussed actions in lifestyle improvement with the purpose of fulfilling powerful objectives.

Once a sceptic, but now a full supporter of the Life Coaching methodology, I was pleased to see its arrival in the BVI; however, I was inquisitive about Dr Reid’s plans to incorporate these theories in Virgin Islands’ lifestyle and more poignantly, how the life coach would assist her clients in actualising realisation of their fantasy property or idyllic yacht here in the Territory.

Talking to Lynda, who is an EdD in Multicultural Leadership, RPCC (Results Professionally Coach Certified with the NeuroLeadership Group), and ACC (Associate Coach Certified with the International Coaching Federation), she revealed her strategy for paving the way to a healthy and fulfilled life.

Explaining that the BVI is a location that excavates the most positive emotions from visitors and residents, Lynda said her approach is to harness those feelings and assist clients in sustaining them. Her first motion is to present a new line of questions that the individual may not have contemplated.

“One of the biggest things is just recognising, ‘what is it you’re feeling?’

And ‘why is it that way?’ And then ‘how can you take that home?’” she said, presenting some of the questions that initiate the fresh course of deliberation for clients.

“It’s all about being consciously aware of the ‘what’s’, the ‘why’s’, and the how’s and setting up small actions to build that into your life,” Lynda continued in translating her procedure.

“I don’t make people change,” she said, in comprehension that the process requires the clients’ desire to improve their lives. “I can’t change the sceptics.

It’s their choice, but I know after speaking to many people in the BVI, that this is needed here and coaching is a growing profession worldwide.”

Delving deeper into the psychology and philosophy supporting Dr Reid’s techniques, she promotes the idea of ‘taking home a new perspective.’

“Many of us stay locked in our traditional patterns of thought…unless we consciously take actions over time,” she said. “It takes three months for us to learn a new habit to change the way we see, do and perceive things.”

Due to the BVI’s serene disposition and awe-inspiring environment, Lynda explained that there is a great opportunity to break the hardwire tendencies in our minds: “Taking home a new perspective refers to those of us who open ourselves to seeing things through a new lens…and consciously choose to work to maintain that positive shift once they return home.”

Using a very simple and comprehendible analogy about physical clutter, Lynda highlighted that: “The ‘barriers’ are…perspectives that form the way we see the world and respond to others…think of your closet…how many www.bvipropertyyacht.com

things are in there that you’ve never touched or don’t even know you have? Physically we create clutter in our lives – we have stuff that doesn’t suit us anymore, that’s not in style…mental hardwiring is the same way – we have these beliefs about ourselves that don’t [suit us anymore].”

“As a coach, I assist people in… breaking down those unconscious barriers…allowing them to clarify their goals and take step-by-step actions to achieve those goals.

“What inevitably comes up for each client is recognition of the thoughts that are limiting or blocking their ability to create positive change in their lives. It is those insights that we use in the coaching process to break down barriers…asking ‘does that suit you?’ ‘Do you still need that?’ thereby rewriting thoughts and setting actions for creating positive change.”

Concluding, Dr Reid relayed her passion for her vocation declaring her humility in watching individuals and their evolution. “Coaching presents a great opportunity,” she said. “…people are able to explore themselves in ways that they have yet to consciously acknowledge and…they can make that positive change happen.”

Photography in the BVI is reaching new heights – literally.

Chris Norton and his company Sky Vision VI are bringing an artistic edge to photography, that is only possible with the combination of his unique ingenuity and the beautiful perspectives that the BVI bestows.

Engaging in multiple distinctions in this art form, self-taught photographer Norton presents Nature, Macro (extreme close-up), Underwater, Urban, Landscape, and Still Life photography with an approach that is gaining recognition with furious momentum.

Aspiring to raise the life out of every photo or video he creates while evoking profound emotion and connection in the recipients, his distinct signature has already begun to emerge in several mediums.

“When you’re passionate about the art, it’s not hard to spend hundreds of hours researching or taking different shots and making tiny adjustments to get that one perfect image,” said Norton in reference to his training.

Supported by his family and friends, he was enthused to pursue his dream of photography that commenced at an early age.

“It’s hard to say how long I have been a professional photographer,” he said, commenting on the origins of his appetite to create stunning visuals.

“My grandfather practically had an inbuilt light metre behind his eyes and, after framing his scene, could tell you the exact aperture, shutter speed, ISO and white balance settings for the perfect shot without any of the tools available today. With such a closely related source of inspiration, Chris took to the craft of photography at the age of nine. He estimates that he reached professional levels by age 18 via underwater tours he did for the yacht he worked for at the time.

Coming to the BVI from South Africa over 20 years ago, Chris became no stranger to challenges in order to reach his goals: “[I came to live] aboard a 32ft sailboat with my parents and older brother. After a few months, we sailed to St Maarten and learned the meaning of hard work after picking up the pieces (literally) following a devastating hurricane. We returned to the BVI and I went on to become a charter yacht captain and later an assistant hotel manager,” he said, discussing his various trials and tribulations. “I draw on skills gained from these life experiences…be it identifying with a customer’s objective, staying calm in a crisis, rebuilding, or sheer persistence.”

When videographer Ben Williams came to the BVI to shoot a short video at Frenchmans Cay Resort, his excursion encouraged Norton to see different dynamics to creating videos: “His videos are inspirational to me in the way they always tend to have a story that resonates with viewers on a personal level. I aspire to that.”

Chris explained that SkyVision VI is the BVI’s first media business to put aerial videography at its heart. Before Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)—which is what the company utilises—most aerial footage was obtained by helicopters; therefore, this is a novel movement in the BVI.

“Utilising specialised equipment and cinematic techniques, I strive to produce fresh and captivating content to allow my clients to sell and promote their own businesses,” he said, explaining his style. “A lot of my work has a cinematic feel to add drama and grab attention. I use a multitude of…tools to get the precise shot or the right feel for a film including sliders, dollies, glide-cams and UAV’s.”

Recently creating an aerial film of the BVI entitled The British Virgin Islands - Nature’s Little Secrets, which demonstrates his aptitude for videography, he generated over 27,000 views in a matter of days.

“Both DJI Innovations, who make the UAV I use and GoPro contacted me asking if they could feature it on their websites,” he said in relation to the best moment in his career so far. “…the greatest thing was reading people’s comments and hearing how my short film had shown them a whole new perspective on the BVI – even for people who had spent their whole life here. It inspired new people to visit, but also reminded existing inhabitants of the BVI’s awe-inspiring beauty and the need to preserve it.

That was very powerful.”

Looking to the future, Norton is optimistic of illustrating the veritable epic beauty of the Territory and transporting that profound mood to viewers across the world via videography. “At the moment, I’m focusing on growing SkyVision VI and…collaborating with the talent of aLookingGlass has been amazing for me…I’m excited to be a part of their creative team.”

Concluding, Norton said: “It’s hard to say where this exciting career will take me. I hope one day to offer my services on a more international scale, whilst still keeping the BVI as my base and home.”

The BVI has turned out some incredible international feats over the years.

The Territory has conceived pop stars,

sports persons, and more, drawing global praise and recognition.

Now, the community has the opportunity to support two young members, who have aspired to compete in the Olympics from an early age and are on course for accomplishing their dream.

Sailors Alec Anderson and Chris Brockbank are the duo set for this epic achievement; catching up with them since their return from training in Europe, they relayed their journey to date, their great passion for sailing, and their ambition to join the Olympics.

“We’ve lived in the BVI all of our lives, both born here…we both got into sailing through the Royal BVI Yacht Club…” said Alec, reminiscing about the origins of his motivation. “…when we were anywhere after 6/7, summer camps, anytime there was a break from school [we would sail] –

Chris pursued the path of recreation and teaching here in the BVI whilst sustaining his appetite for racing. Alec, who perceived the Olympics as the pinnacle of competitive sailing, had a strong desire to reach the international contest from the beginning.

Looking to the 49er category and on graduation from college, he sought out Chris who he felt would be the most solid partner to join his goal.

“So far, we’ve done our best and raised money from private sponsorship as well as great help from the Olympic Committee,” he said. “Richard Branson and aLookingGlass— who have got our brand out there—have been an incredible help as well…we’ve been focusing on training and working on our 49er which other than the catamarans is the fastest Olympic class,” Alec continued.

Purchasing the 49er that they used to train on through sponsorship funds, they’ve been permitted to hone their skills in the BVI: “A day in the life of a 49er sailor or any Olympic athlete is at least an hour and

a half in the gym—weight training or cardio—eating 4000-6000 calories a day, and three to four hours on the water, and then when you have your coach, you debrief for one to two hours,” said the potential Olympic competitor in discussing his current daily practice.

For the latter part of May, the eager athletes trained at Sensus Gym where the owner Lisa Adamson provided free membership and fitness training to their cause alongside their sailing routine: “To avoid complacency, we brought down two-time Olympian and World Champion British sailor Ben Rhodes…he is the cream of the crop. He coached us for two weeks and helped us to figure out the path of the campaign.

“We are looking at our first qualifying opportunity in September…in Spain,” he added, talking about their deadline. “Second chance is at the North American qualifier early 2015 and the third chance will be in South America in 2015 – three opportunities, first one right around the corner – we’re going to give it our all,” said Alec with enthusiasm.

Talking to aLookingGlass Creative Director Nick Cunha, who headed the aLG sponsorship of the Anderson Brockbank campaign, he explained that his Tech Shirt by aLookingGlass

“It was my chance to contribute something back to them,” said Nick in reference to aLG’s support of their cause. “As long as they have confidence that we can aid them in meeting their fundraising goals, they can focus more on the important part, which is training and hopefully qualifying for the games…” aLG has provided them with branding and apparel, designed a fund raising website, and assisted with social media: “Lately, we have provided graphic design for everything from invites, posters, boat decals, apparel, website and social media branding for free,” stated Nick, excited about his involvement in the cause.

With intention of consistent support, Nick is seeking ways to assist with their actual training. “I am collaborating…with a programmer who has been working on developing apps for Android,” he said. “This is something I am not able to talk much about only because the project’s in early stages, but it seems as though the BVI Olympic Sailing Team will be testing the app and equipment on their next trip to Europe. The goal for this development would be to literally get them up to speed with the teams that have been sailing 49ers together for long periods of time.”

Offering advice to the younger generation of BVIslanders, Alec emphasised diligence and dedication to ambitions: “Getting the support we have, came from the fact that Chris and I worked really hard from an early age,” he said. “People were more than willing to help out.” He also highlighted their willingness to help the younger generation in similar pursuits, mentioning his gratitude toward the BVI community, naming Nanny Cay, International Motors, and Quantum Sail Design Group who have aided their efforts.
