Welcome to the March issue of the BVI Property Guide. Now in our first quarter of the year we stand strong in a time of economic certainty. Whilst foreclosures and recession hits the US Market we take in some salt air and breathe out some relief that at least here our economy is not as directly affected on such a rapid scale. This issue brings you features on two amazing properties on the island of Great Camanoe. When we are on location with the realtors and photographers quite often we have a chance to meet the owners. This is an incredible insight to us as we can converse with them about the history behind their move to or off the island and their times here, or even more fascinating is the time of the owners before them. Each building has that history and it’s the fine tuning of research that will bring the details to light that even as we look at a stone wall, type of bath fitting there are bigger pictures afoot that as an island off the main island building on Camanoe was feat in itself and the test of will in the strength and character of the building. As observers we can but wonder and marvel at what was done before and what will come to pass with these properties and the island lifestyle but as we often advocate, don’t let it all pass you by.

During these troubled times, it’s very interesting to note that the top end of the market for luxury yachts is apparently still doing very well indeed. Around 450 of these luxurious floating palaces, all 40 metres or more, are currently under construction. And if you want yours ready for next season, forget it. You will have to wait until something like 2013. Now hold on. Don’t turn the magazine upside down. You are reading it the right way up and this is the Property section, not the Yacht Guide. The point is, having cracked your bottle of vintage champagne on the hull of your gleaming vessel – hopefully without scratching the very expensive paintwork – where are you going to park it? You could, I suppose, float around the world’s oceans indefinitely and helicopter in as needs be but at some point it really will have to dock. You’ll be needing a marina then. Our interesting times intertwine the challenges of the current global economy with the excitement of the new administration in Washington, and the problem of global warming with an accelerating rate of development and technological change. These dynamics will undoubtedly impact our hospitality industry. Out of every crisis, however, there is an opportunity. The BVI has traditionally targeted the luxury travel market and it is important to refocus our efforts in understanding the dynamics that drive this sector of the tourism industry. The first step in this process is assessing the changes in luxury hospitality trends.

Guests are increasingly seeking an eco-friendly experience. They are more sensitive to the community and the environment surrounding the beautiful locations of the five-star resorts they visit, and they hope to come away with the sense that their stay in no way damaged the very place they came to see. This is not only great news for the environment, but as more destinations adopt these standards, in the BVI and throughout the region, they will be associated with an enhanced perception in line with the values and needs of their target guests. prospective purchaser to pay a 10% earnest deposit to the vendor’s agent to be held in escrow prior to signing of a purchase and sale agreement. Although payment of a deposit does not bind the vendor or their agent legally it is taken as a clear indication that a purchaser intends to sign a purchase and sale agreement forthwith. Interest earned on this deposit goes to the purchaser in the event that the purchaser withdraws prior to signing contracts. If the purchase proceeds to contract, interest goes to the vendor and the deposit is non-refundable. • Purchase and Sale Agreement: Once agreement in principle has been reached between the purchaser and the vendor, a legally binding purchase and sale agreement drawn up by the vendor’s attorney is signed by the parties. Great Camanoe and its houses have been featured several times in our magazine. Each time we visit there we are drawn into a world of an island living amongst great houses that have their own history in the land as well as their structure. Built on what is presumed to be Quaker land complete with ruins, Diamond Reef Estate is one of those houses. Three generations of Berlin women have run the household. The current owners purchased the house twelve years ago, it was built in 1969. Though its sturdy stone walls and floors are original, the present owners refurbished the property to its current status as a timeless estate. In its predecessors' run, the house was decorated with 19th century Country French antiques handpicked by Mrs. Parish, the art dÊcor advisor to Jacqueline Kennedy. The property was built by Dr Upjohn Light of the existing Upjohn pharmaceutical company. On the 800-foot long waterfront side of the property rests the prize of a private beach and its protected Diamond Reef provides excellent diving and snorkeling. A private swim dock extends close to the reef. The property comes with a Boston Whaler and a Glacier Bay 2670 power cat. This is island living at its best. Getting around on the island is provided by the property’s three cars, a Land Rover, a mini bus and a golf cart. The best way to explore the estate and its vast gardens is on foot, following the stone walkways that join the houses together. wooden trusses cross the high ceiling, its walls decorated with antiques. There is a powder room and fully stocked bar and this bright white room is one for relaxing after a day in the sun. Italian Terra cotta tile is prevalent again. On the back side of the Great Room, en route to the main bedroom, we pass the hot tub which is surrounded by flowering bushes and vines. Approximately half of the ten-acre estate is landscaped. We reach the master bedroom and the adjoining sitting room which could be turned into a second bedroom. Currently an entertainment system housed in a wall unit and lounges dress the room. The marble bathroom with his and her sinks is decorated with classic fittings. Wherever you go in the property, there are views of the ocean and the islands. Down another stone walkway we come to the guest house, self contained with kitchenette, an outside shower/ bathroom as well as an inside one featuring Sherle Wagner fixtures. In the courtyard there is a fireplace for warmth or quiet reflection. The bedroom and living room lead to a terrace overlooking the private swim dock and a beautiful view of the ocean and distant islands. Once again the guest house maintains the strong stone walls and floors that whisper strength and tranquility. The property has undergone major renovation and continues to do so. Having a full time maintenance man and housekeeper is a great

help in running the house and gardens. Over the years there has been extensive updating. Though the estate is now complete, its land has plenty of room for expansion. One of the aspects of the house we came across was its absolute timeless quality. There is nothing outdated in the house in terms of its fittings, taste or furnishings. Running throughout the property are antiques, hand carved sculptures and artifacts from the sea of yesteryear and today. Diamond Reef Estate has its own boat house complete with desalination system. Camanoe’s residents enjoy the privilege of a shared dock and communal area by its beach front. The owners still enjoy the evenings at the mail collection library which now serves for get-togethers for owners and guests. Living on Camanoe is living in the BVI. Scrub island and Trellis are a boat ride away and the island is steeped in a history of hard living from the indigo plantations to the current status of self-sufficiency, privacy and contentment. The Beautiful British Virgin Islands are a continuous source of inspiration for local and visiting artists. Azure bays, brilliant tropical flowers accenting most every view, that crystal clear water, Caribbean architecture that can range from old stone mills to bright gingerbread trimmed houses. And that’s just at first glance. “Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life.” -- Picasso. Artists absorb the world around them the way some can drink. There is no stopping us, we drink it in and it comes out as a painting, a sculpture or in our writing. If it isn’t the stunning seascapes that inspires - with constantly changing hues, the clear skies of cerulean blue, hot pinks and violet or the beautiful palm fringed bays… then there is a good chance it will be the colorful island-life or wildlife. The tiny blue house with the bright yellow hurricane shutters that looks as if it is trying to compete with the brilliance of the sun and sea, or the beach bar teaming with sandy feet and sunburned visitors in tropical shirts, the funky night spots - reggae or steel bands, the Iguana stretched out on a rock in the sun. Pelicans,

Magnificent Frigatebirds, a Great Blue Heron, the glimpse of a mongoose, a hummingbird at a hibiscus flower, the Hawksbill Turtle spotted while snorkeling or the donkey dressed in style with a lei of colorful tropical flowers… Even the most indifferent person visiting or living here - must occasionally say, “Wow!” I have seen sunsets so intense -- the sky so streaked with crimson and violet -- that the sea looked like flowing lava. I thought, “If I painted this view, people will not believe it was real.” So whether the island attracts artist or brings out the hidden artist in us all, is like saying, “If a tree falls in the forest…” The Gallery on Main Street is a charming shop where you can view and purchase artwork created by BVI artists.

The Gallery itself is worthy of painting. A charming West Indian style house, built about 80 years ago as a split, two-family dwelling, and was lived in until the 1970’s, when it first opened as a retail shop. Remember that I said, “Two-family dwelling”? When you stop in, you will understand why. It is truly an island style house with large shuttered doors and windows open to the trade winds, clapboard and fretwork and a sun-drenched paintjob that just draw you into a shop filled to overflowing with unique works of art. The shop is owned and operated by the local artist Lisa Muddiman Gray whose beautiful batiks and rich watercolors of coral reefs with their wildlife and color-filled tropical gardens are on exhibit along with a wide variety of creations by other BVI artists.

Artists may see and be inspired to paint the same scene. But we never recreate it in the same way. The following is a list of artist and the variety of mediums and styles available this month at The Gallery. Linda Babin’s fun silk paintings make you smile. They are infused with colorful laundry caught up in the breeze, chickens roaming the garden, and the feeling of a sunny, carefree Caribbean day. Lutia Tai Durante creates lively island scenes in oil on canvas of Caribbean life and it’s rich cultural history. Roger Ellis a.k.a. Flukes excels in his ink and watercolor paintings of island scenes and nature and is well known for his maps with their old-world illustrative style.

Anita Gulliver shines with a fun cartoon style of silk painting infused with sun kissed color. Her artwork focuses on the local events and notable island locations. Aileen Malcolm sees the humor in the island lifestyle and creates amusing scenes and characters with fascinating detail. Jinx Morgan’s paintings of bright tropical flowers, gorgeous bays and verandas dabbled with bright sunlight and color-rich shadow are sunny places that make you want to curl up like a cat and soak in the rays and the view. Savanna Redman is best know for her detailed ink drawings, watercolors, hand drawn and painted Caribbean and Virgin Island Charts - illustrated with old sailing ships, mermaids and sea monsters.

Garry Scales creates in ink and watercolor, finding his inspiration in nature, from vivid tropical flowers to luxuriant land and seascapes. Blanka Smith paints in a fresh watercolor style creating radiant island scenes, noteworthy landmarks and tropical flowers. The painting shown here of The Gallery is one of her charming paintings. Isabelle Smith captures the gorgeous island views on location in watercolor. Delighting in the rich colours of the Caribbean and painting the charismatic local sights. Jill Tattersall paints striking light-filled scenes in watercolor with the historical charm of the days gone by.

Retreats are to an extent in the eye of the beholder. Never have I come across such views as those above Camanoe, from the observatory of Whipple House with its rustic charm. Currently under renovation ,Whipple House consists of three master suites that have been joined together and is now opened up to let the light in on what was once a modest dwelling. Its sturdy structure of stone and timber have been built to last more than its young 40 years already. The name Whipple is that of famous English astronomer Fred Whipple 1906-2004.
