Our history journey continues with expert Geoff Brooks as he retells a crucial piece of BVI culture with the Joan of Arc and the Great March of 1949; it’s challenging to get hold of the BVI’s seafaring past so we’re always grateful for Geoff’s insights and knowledge. The Things We Love have been a little blue this month and no, we don’t mean down; the home accessories exhibited all fall under a very blue theme for July. Moving on, we would be very interested to find a person who actually likes mozzies…seriously, is there anyone in the world who likes them? We doubt it. It’s time to get those flying bloodsuckers out and this month, we look at the ‘BugOut’ operation currently active in Virgin Gorda, initiated to protect residents and visitors from viral diseases, that have had adverse effects on the economy. Coming to the end of the magazine, you will find an extract of the BVI’s hiking guide Trails & Tales; this practical, educational, and inspiring book could open you up to a new hobby and a novel way of seeing the islands.

Upon reopening towards the end of 2017, Rosewood Little Dix Bay will reaffirm its legacy as the Caribbean’s leading luxury resort. OBMI’s chairman Tim Peck offered his perspective on the renovation: “We are very excited to be part of the team revitalising the wonderful Little Dix Bay Resort. We are all very conscious of building on the Rockefeller legacy, with the upgrade adding a layer of contemporary comfort and luxury repositioning and revitalising one of the Caribbean’s classic resorts. Most days in the Virgin Islands are sunny with glorious blue skies; however, from June to November, and peaking in mid-September, there is an increased possibility of tropical storms and hurricanes. Preparation is key and although you should have started already, here are our five important points for making certain you are organised for hurricane season.

1) Building Security
• Your water pump will be affected by a power failure. Check that you
Many of the buildings in the BVI are built with reinforced concrete but
can access your cistern directly. If the cistern cover is outside, you may not
they can still be vulnerable when facing 100+ mile an hour gusts and
be able to get to it so fill up the bath and as many containers as you have
torrential rains. The following will help:
• Purchase and charge up mobile power packs for your phone and tablets –
this way you can stay in touch with the outside world during a black out
• Have metal or plywood protective covers made for your windows and doors. Have a supply of screws and the tools needed to install them
• If you have a covered balcony or porch, the overhang may be damaged
by a sudden uplift. Security can be provided by wiring to a secure timber support or wall
• Remove the blades from exterior ceiling fans • Make sure your gutters are clear so they can collect and drain as much
water as possible and check that the cistern overflow pipes are clear so excess can drain away
4) Insurance
• Make sure you’re covered • Once a storm has been officially named, you can no longer secure coverage so have year round insurance in place
• Make sure that your policy is in order as to current value and contents 5) Be Ready
• Keep an eye out on the weather reports so you’re informed as early as possible • Identify who you need to help you prepare and check their availability • Have enough provisions in your store cupboard (drinking 2) Pools, Decks, and Gardens Sadly, it’s not generally possible to insure landscaping. Replanting will take time and can be costly so our advice is:
water and tinned foods as well as chocolate and wine!)
• Have batteries, torches, candles etc. as well as brooms, mops, and garbage
bags in readiness of the clean-up
• Keep large trees healthy and trimmed to limit damage from falling branches • Move potted plants indoors or store under decking • Move outdoor and pool furniture, barbecues, surfboards, bikes etc. so that they’re not blown over/around. Some individuals store items in the pool itself but be mindful that the chemicals will have an impact on fabrics/wooden finishes
• Turn the pool pump off and if you have a cover for the pool secure it in place 3) Power Supply It’s highly likely that the main power supply will be turned off during a hurricane to limit the damage from fallen power lines. Repairs may also take time – you could be without power for 4-5 days. If you have doubts about how well your property will fare or if you

Having decided that the BVI is place for you to invest in real estate, now the fun really starts. Which island will be best for you and your family? Tortola is the hub for all transportation connections, banking facilities and major schools. Virgin Gorda offers a far more laid-back lifestyle with the charm of a sleepy island. Have you fallen in love with one of stylish homes on the market or do you want the challenge of building your dream home? Whatever your preference, Coldwell Banker BVI can guide you through the decision making process and provide you with some excellent choices of both land and existing homes. When choosing the ideal home site for your Caribbean home, you should begin with the two main considerations: do you want a waterfront location and easy access to the beach, or a hillside plot with panoramic views?

We also have a considerable selection of beachfront real estate such as the lots at Sandcastle Estate on Little Bay, Tortola. Little Bay is a beautiful and very secluded beach on the north-eastern shore of Tortola featuring nine stunning lots, three of which border the idyllic white sandy beach. You cannot get closer to the beach than this. The three beachfront lots at Sandcastle Estate range in price from $650,000-$800,000. Once the hillside versus beachfront dilemma has been settled, the next decision is what to build. Consider carefully what the main use of your property will be. Are you planning to relocate to the BVI? Or will you use the home as a vacation getaway? Will this be the dream home to be passed down through the successive generations? Or might you view it as an investment to be sold on when necessary? The answers to these questions will greatly determine what you should build.

The dramatic landscapes of both Tortola and Virgin Gorda are the perfect backdrop for flamboyant houses to match the extremes of colour and texture of the tropical landscape. Building a house in this environment can be an excuse to let your creative processes run riot. An excellent example is Whale Rock House on Virgin Gorda. Situated in a 2-acre lot bordering the Baths National Park and with views out to Fallen Jerusalem and beyond, Whale Rock House has three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms spread over 4,500 square feet of interior space and a distinctly adobe-style feel. Looking out over the cacti and boulders, you could be forgiven for

thinking you were the only house on the island. Your privacy at the home is complete. The granite boulders that surround the property fashion an integral part of the design and construction of the house, in many cases forming a wall of a bedroom and providing the shape for the pool. Pillars shaped like tree trunks and curved walls and roof add to the unique character of Whale Rock House. The neutral colours of the interiors combined with the rich woods of the windows and doors, do nothing to detract from the piercing blue of the sky and ocean outside. Deep roofed porches, stone terraces, and large teak decks offer lounging areas for any time of the day whether you wish

The crew set up the events and the focus is all about fun. Refreshments or lunch may be set up on the beach – perhaps a delightful picnic under shade umbrellas. A cruise on Superyacht Spirit has been described as an experience of Zen, and a way to think of Zen is that of a total state of focus; a togetherness of body and mind. The on-board facilities of Spirit lend themselves to rest, relaxation, and harmony. Conversely, the water sports and activities are there to invigorate, stimulate, and provide excitement and fun. What a combination!

SEA It all started in November when Captain Theodolph Faulkner from Anegada brought his wife to the cottage hospital in Road Town. She was having difficulty with her pregnancy and there was no medical help in Anegada. While she was in the hospital, Theodolph stayed in town to be near her and in the evenings, he would sit out in Main Street near the old post office and complain about the lack of services provided for the people of Anegada. Each night, more and more people would gather and soon complaints were aired about government services throughout the Virgin Islands. Theodolph was soon joined by two other local activists; Captain Carleton DeCastro and Glanville Fonseca. The three decided that it Words and photography by Geoffrey Brooks, Curator – Virgin Islands Maritime Museum

Escape for a Day on Your Own Private Yacht
The Joan of Arc being newly built and capable of carrying large numbers of people, was recruited to provide transport. She spent the whole day picking people up and bringing them to town. She went to East End, West End, Virgin Gorda, and even Anegada. As word spread, increased numbers of people began assembling at the bandstand at the bottom of Joes Hill. By 5pm, over 1,500 people began the march led by Faulkner, Fonseca, and DeCastro. They marched down Main Street, past Fleming Street, and ended at the then Governor’s office;

today’s Sir Olva Georges Plaza. Chanting “down with Cruickshank” and “we want our own government” as well as carrying signs saying the same, the three men presented a petition to the Governor stating their demands. Governor Cruickshank agreed to consider the proposals, share their concerns with his superiors in the Foreign Office, and abide by whatever decision they made. Although the Governor kept his job, it was decided to accept the request that representative government be restored to the Virgin Islands. The next year, the Legislative Council was

This could not have been possible without the aid of the Joan of Arc in transporting the marchers from all over the Virgin Islands. The Joan of Arc went on to serve the people of the Virgin Islands for more than 20 years. She was truly a pioneer in more ways than one. Her builder, Voosten Pickering met a young woman from Long Island, New York, married her, and settled there. He continued to work as a master shipwright and built an America’s Cup racing boat as well as a schooner that was featured in a 1950’s television series called Adventures in Paradise.

LIFE Words by Sara Sherman Photography courtesy of BugOut
If you’ve endured the itchy results of a mosquito bite, you know how uncomfortable and annoying it can be. But imagine terribly aching joints, skin rashes, muscle pain, or headaches, all accompanied by a fever. These uncomfortable symptoms may indicate contraction of a mosquito-borne disease like Zika, Dengue, or Chikungunya. These diseases are much more than annoying - they can be life-threatening. With the world watching Rio de Janeiro, Brazil as they prepare for the Summer Olympics and the very real threat of the Zika virus spreading throughout South America and the Caribbean, a non-profit organisation in the BVI is taking serious action. BugOut is a community-driven initiative led by a coalition of community leaders, residents, business owners, and government representatives to control the islands’ mosquito population and reduce the risk of mosquitoborne diseases like Zika, Dengue, and Chikungunya. The programme is focused on eradication of the Aedes Aegypti breed of mosquito as it is the known carrier of these diseases. Based in Virgin Gorda with initiative efforts reaching Moskito Island, Necker Island and Eustatia Island, BugOut works to educate the public and encourage them to become involved with a ‘you’re only as good as your neighbour’ mentality. “We’re starting with the belief that the more people involved, the more information shared, and the more ownership everyone has in the results of the programme, the better,” said Sarina Hancock, BugOut Project Coordinator.

Targeted, Safe Mosquito Control
Continuous Community Feedback, Improvement
The multi-faceted programme begins with community education and empowerment. With efforts including door-to-door canvassing, public advertising, social media campaigns, and introducing the initiative to schools, BugOut shows the entire community how every effort is important in the fight against mosquitoes. A sophisticated monitoring programme allows the BugOut team to produce data on current mosquito populations and to include citizens and landowners in creating a crowd-powered, comprehensive, and ongoing picture of mosquito presence in the BVI. This data is then used as a benchmark to ensure initiative efforts are effective and to make necessary modifications if needed. The privately-funded BugOut initiative has the flexibility to adjust initiative efforts more swiftly and with greater effect, offering the community a truly responsive organisation with community betterment as the focus. “Everyone plays an important role in our monitoring network. With just a few taps of a smartphone, individuals can alert BugOut teams to problem areas, hotspots, and breeding sites, which in turn strengthens our understanding of the conditions throughout the island,” said Grey Frandsen, BugOut project co-chair. Guided by the island-wide monitoring programme, BugOut’s mosquito control methods begin with the most important component to combating the Dengue and Zika spreading mosquito species by eliminating mosquito breeding sites around every home, business, school, park, and harbour. programme in conjunction with the government of the BVI that doesn’t only rely on spraying dangerous chemicals around the islands, but instead deploys an integrated approach that balances the protection of Virgin Gorda’s residents, communities, and tourists. On top of aggressive source reduction efforts, BugOut’s task force continues to monitor and research aggressive mosquito control techniques that are environmentally safe, eco-friendly and state-of-the-art. Methods may include larvicides, adulticides, auto-dissemination applications, spraying, bait-and-kill, land and beach clean-up, standing water removal,

Now we’re certainly not telling you to ‘get lost’as the phrase ‘take a hike’ is commonly known. Quite the opposite in fact. If you haven’t heard, Trails & Tales is a guide book to make certain you don’t get lost on the BVI’s most beautiful hikes, and absorb as much of the island’s natural environment as possible. Author Ron Beard came to the Territory in 2011 on a two-year contract as Deputy and then Acting Chief Planner in the Premier’s Office. After several DIY hikes, he realised that there was no guidance literature on the island for this hobby. After collaboration with aLookingGlass and sponsorship from Sir Richard Branson, Henry Jarecki, Biwater International, VP Bank, and the BVI Tourist Board, Trails & Tales was conceived. Trail Directions From the Ridge Road driving E to W some 0.5m beyond the Elevator junction, there is a four way cross roads from which the SMNP access and Mountain View Restaurant are signposted straight ahead up the hill. The walk starts from a point some 500yds uphill beyond this junction, where you should look out for a small access on the left where two dirt tracks join the road from different directions. At this point, there is just room for a single vehicle to park; NB. respect local residents and track users, park courteously or seek a spot elsewhere if necessary. This is the start of the walk (Waypoint A on the Map).
Approach From here look S and seaward and start the walk along the level dirt track to your right, being wary of any donkeys that may be tethered! Follow the track as it tends left below an eerily thick forest canopy and past several ghut beds which, during the season, channel great volumes of runoff from the steep slopes above, down the mountainside below. The track affords access to several

Some 300yds from the start, veer left at a Y junction and follow the now deteriorated dirt track, between its verdant walls. Pass a small wooden hut moldering back into the forest which is now encroaching on all sides. A further 300yds ahead on a better section of steeper track, the canopy above begins to open out. Eventually at the corner ahead B you’ll be rewarded with a magnificent panorama SE towards Sea Cow’s Bay and Nanny Cay immediately below and across Drake’s Channel . Continue along and up the track keeping left at a junction, where another track leads up to the right, one supposes towards a future building plot. The walking is an easy plod along the increasingly overgrown track for a further 250yds past what is becoming rather dryer forest. Follow the track and as it tends right you may encounter a branch and wire pullgate strung across it, placed to keep cattle from wandering too far C . It’s 350yds up the track to a junction where a small path continues straight ahead and into the dense forest. However, your route follows the vehicular track that turns sharply right and up a very steep section that has been heavily eroded by rains D . After another 350yds it levels off and slims down into a narrow path between the forest edges, now enclosed on both sides by barbed wire. Look out on the left for teasing views over the cow pastures below sweeping down towards Havers and Pockwood Pond E . Continue along the main path for a further 250yds and you’ll end up in the bed of a small ghut, barred by another branch and wire pull-gate. However, rather than having to untie it (and another one beyond), swivel right to face a low wire fence and carefully step over it amongst moist scrub forest F . Walk along the forest edge for 50yds and then step left, back over the remains of the low fence and look for a now obvious and well-worn trail where you tend right. Congratulations, you are now inside SMNP.

Voting is underway! The fun has begun and we are so excited to see what results will emerge from our competition this year. If you’re new to this annual event, here’s a little background info…
Readers’ Choice was originally created as an entertaining activity to recognise businesses, establishments, and individuals across the BVI, who have made a valuable contribution to the Territory’s wellness and prosperity; this acknowledgement spans a diverse range of categories covering the three areas of our magazine – LAND (property related), SEA (marine endeavours), and LIFE (BVI lifestyle). Initiating in 2011, each passing year the awards have witnessed an increase in popularity among readers and a surge in competition with the nominees. September 2015’s concluding ceremony at Nanny Cay was a thriving success with a multitude of activities to enjoy, amid the announcement of the winners.

Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award 2016
Additionally, we’ve created a new category presented by Veuve Clicquot – Business Woman Award. Originally created in 1972 as a tribute to Madame Clicquot, the annual Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award champions the success of business women worldwide, who share the same qualities as Madame Clicquot: Her enterprising spirit, her courage, and the determination necessary to accomplish her aims. Highly prized and sought after, it is the first international award formed specifically to recognise the contribution that women have made to business life and is now regarded as the ‘Oscar’ for female entrepreneurs and business leaders around the World.
So, for the first time, we are proud to present this Award here in the Virgin Islands. Nominees are required to supply their name, a 200 – 300-word ‘Elevator Speech,’ including their education, achievements, and a photograph. Judging will take place, with a selection of three finalists prior to the final winner announcement at our Award’s event in October.
The VIPY RC categories are listed in alphabetical order. Voting commences online NOW at bvipropertyyacht.com The closing deadline for voting is 1 September 2016. Keep in mind, the longer that nominees are online, the more chance there is for them to get votes so nominate now if the company/individual you wish to see win is not there! We really hope you enjoy the 2016 awards and find the final results helpful in relishing residency or vacation in the Virgin Islands.
