True beach-side living in all its perfection
COLDWELL BANKER REAL ESTATE BVI is excited to present for sale an outstanding contemporary home within a few feet of one of Tortola’s most stunning beaches at Trunk Bay on the North Shore of Tortola. Trunk Bay is a peaceful residential community situated only 10 minutes’ drive from Road Town, the island’s capital and commercial centre. The aptly named Villa Ventana, which is the Spanish word for window, has been designed with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors in each room, ensuring lots of light and that the stunning vistas are never interrupted. Villa Ventana recently won this year’s ‘Judges Wildcard Award’ in the Virgin Islands Property and Yacht Stylish Spaces Awards 2017. Stylish in its simplicity, Villa Ventana has high ceilings and sleek lines resulting in a thoroughly modern feel. The abundance of glass means you can open up the doors to embrace

the outdoors or close up tight and enjoy the air-conditioning when you desire. The indoor living area flows seamlessly into the outdoor dining area, built-in barbecue area, and sun terrace with infinity-edge pool. The interior layout has been thoughtfully designed to offer each of the three bedrooms a separate entrance and feeling of privacy. On the ground level and adjacent to the kitchen/living area is the first bedroom. A further two bedrooms can be reached via an alfresco staircase. Each bedroom is of equal size and has an en-suite bathroom with smooth marble countertops, a shower, and walk-in wardrobe. From each
bedroom, floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors lead out to a private terrace where the gentle breezes, and sound of the waves lapping can be enjoyed. Furnishings have been intentionally kept to a minimum and do nothing to detract from the natural beauty of the surrounding trees and the beach views. A well-equipped and functional kitchen forms the focal point of the living area. The beach at Trunk Bay is an extension of the villa’s gardens. at Villa Ventana and leads down through the trees to the beach. There is no house in this estate with closer or easier beach access. Completed in 2014, Villa Ventana has an automatic generator, internet coverage in every room, and DirecTV already installed. Ownership at Trunk Bay comes with the privileges of a carefully managed estate. All utilities are underground and lot sizes are large, so the hillside will never be overcrowded. Villa Ventana has been operating as a vacation rental villa for the past three years and has become a firm favourite with many repeat guests. It was very deliberately designed to be easy to manage and—if need be— lock up and leave. Full property management and vacation villa marketing services are provided for Ventana by Coldwell Banker BVI and BVI Villa Rental. ■

YOUR HOME IS YOUR sanctuary from the outside world. Whether you’re wanting to overhaul your current decor or need to freshen up a space, coastal design offers an elegant and tranquil way to decorate your home. The colours and feel of the seaside provide a timeless elegance and won’t go out of fashion anytime soon. From beach cottage casual to upscale villa living, these seaside chic decor ideas will brighten up your space and breathe fresh new life into your home.
Coastal Colours

LIVING 22 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T
bvipropertyyacht.com
The very first step to creating a home with a beachy vibe is choosing a colour palette to set the stage for everything else. A coastal palette is naturally cool and calming, but don’t feel like you’re restricted to only using blue tones. Keeping things light and bright should be the goal. Here are some ways to begin to bring your coastal theme to life with colour.
SANDY HUES
Embrace your life by the sea
Warm, natural tones from taupe to khaki are reminiscent of soft sand and provide a light, neutral base for any room. To avoid the dreaded beige overload of the 90s, consider choosing an accent colour to complement the neutral tones and keep things from becoming too monochromatic.

Take inspiration from the ocean itself. The water is lighter close to shore, and gets darker as the water deepens.
WATERY BLUES AND GREENS
Nothing says ‘seaside’ quite like the beautiful blue colour of the ocean. The bad news is that since the Caribbean has so many different hues to choose from, it can be hard to decide on a colour. The good news is that greens and blues can blend well together. Take inspiration from the ocean itself. The water is lighter close to shore, and gets darker as the water deepens. Blues and greens can be as light as an early morning sky, as bold as the turquoise water near Sandy Spit, or as dark as the deep, navy blue ocean on the horizon.
CRISP WHITES
For a truly bright and breezy feel, you can’t go wrong with a clean white colour palette. White and ivory hues are naturally bright, and daylight

lights up your rooms allowing your personality to shine through. Picture crisp clouds and soft breezes through linen curtains to inspire your clean colour story.
BOLD ‘TROPICALS’
A coastal colour palette doesn’t have to be all beach all the time. The vibrant colours of the tropics are as varied as the people of the Caribbean. Corals and pinks make great accent colours for turquoise and teal, and yellows can really brighten up a kitchen or bath. Purples and oranges provide other bold choices that can provide a great complement to neutrals and remind people of the beautiful flowers of the tropics. Don’t leave wallpaper out of the mix either. Modern wallpapers can bring muted texture to an area large

or small, and keep walls interesting without needing to add accent colours that create a jarring contrast for the eye.
Furniture Island living is outdoor living with the beauty of nature surrounding your home, creating comfortable and welcoming outdoor spaces for relaxing and taking it all in. Hammocks and swing chairs are a tropical staple and invite guests to stay a while. Keep the coastal feel going with furniture choices that bring the
bvipropertyyacht.com
outdoors in. Driftwood tables bring a natural element to a living space or entryway. Wicker and rattan pieces aren’t just for the patio anymore; they add texture to rooms that can normally feel one-dimensional or flat. Make sure furniture choices are as functional as they are beautiful. Ottomans and stools can be moved from one room to another and from indoors to out, depending on where extra seating is needed. Comfort is key in creating a relaxing, welcoming space. Don’t be afraid to mix traditional pieces with more modern or artistic ones to create visual contrast. Rugs not only provide a soft place for your feet, they can tie an entire room together. Geometric patterns add movement, while solid colours with texture create an anchor for other pieces of furniture. Layering
bvipropertyyacht.com
rugs is a great way to bring natural fibres like jute indoors, while a vibrant coloured piece brings another visual element into the room.
Artful Accents Classic coastal design truly comes to life in the small details of a room. Artwork choices can be very literal and depict beach scenes or boats, or be more conceptual and invoke the flavour of the sea with images of coral or shells. Framed starfish, sand dollars and sea fans create a more lively and natural way to decorate a wall, while oars and paddles bring the feel of the sailing life into your home. Lamps not only provide light, but keep a continuous coastal feel throughout various spaces. Lantern sconces in the bedrooms harken to
the yachting lifestyle, while glass bases wrapped with rope or nets bring the fishing industry to mind. Seashells and other natural elements can also create interesting lighting choices without adding weight to a room. Plants bring the beautiful, natural world indoors. Tropical flowers provide colour and lush green palms and other potted plants liven and freshen a space. Bedrooms and bathrooms need to be the most relaxing areas in a home, so keep accessories to a minimum to reduce visual (and literal) clutter. AT THE END OF THE DAY, you will want to walk into your home and feel the peace. Kick off your shoes, grab a cocktail, and enjoy the relaxing vibe of your seaside-chic sanctuary. ■

SPLASH Let the natural colours of the Caribbean surround and awaken; the sand, bamboo, and trees provide the neutral ground of taupes and beiges, the sky and sea lend the blues, from the pale to the intense turquoise, transitioning through cobalt to navy. Foliage gives us green with the vivid lime, jade, and emerald. We implement orange which is a contrast to the blues on the colour wheel and bestows representation of the sun and our flora. PROPS Set up areas for function and relaxation. Get your resources together with a heavyduty cooler to handle hours of chilling, a comfy but lightweight chair for easy transport and positioning, and complete the grilling station with a portable grill and tools, or build your own grill pit with rocks and wood you gather. Don’t forget to love your earth by using biodegradable or reusable products and reduce your footprint left behind. Beach games that you can play with others are always good to add to the props. Small Space BIG Impact!
GET REFLECTIVE:
The illusion of being in a bigger room than in reality can also come from the use of mirrored glass, something that is much easier and cheaper than any structural alterations you might consider. Mirrors add the feeling of openness and brightness to small confined spaces and can be placed anywhere in a room to achieve this effect. A mirror placed directly opposite a large window, will enable you to see outside from different angles and provide added light to your room. Placing a mirror behind a lamp will boost the amount of light that fills the room at a much-needed time of the day.

WHEN YOU ARE SHORT on space, there is no need to compromise on style. With a little ingenuity and creativity, and without too much effort and expense, you can transform that space into an integral part of your home; somewhere that has more functionality, appeal, and maximises the limited space available.
DE-CLUTTER:
If your small space is full of clutter that rarely sees the light of day, consider reducing the number of items that you don’t need. Remove pieces that don’t serve a purpose, or that are not of sentimental or fiscal value. Too many pieces can make a

room seem busy and claustrophobic. The adage ‘less is more’ is never more appropriate than when decorating a small room or space. Rather than using lots of pieces scattered around the area, concentrate on one or two larger pieces to create focus.
LET THERE BE LIGHT:
As with all restricted, enclosed spaces, the main concern is light, or more accurately the lack of it. If your room has windows, using sheer-curtains will encourage light and make the room brighter. Consider hanging curtains or drapes from the height of the ceiling, or let them hang lower than the floor; this gives
the room and windows a feel of being taller. The colour scheme you choose for a room is crucial to the design of a successful space, that is both comforting and functional. Pale, reflective shades will add and reflect light around the room and give a sense of spaciousness. Darker colours will absorb the light and create shadows and dark areas. An exception to this rule is to choose a focus wall and decorate it with a pattern design. Doing this will add an elegant backdrop and draw the eye to your most precious pieces, or perhaps a notable painting or photograph.
bvipropertyyacht.com
MAKING AN ENTRANCE:
Hallway entrances—which at times can be overlooked when decorating— are the first areas visitors see when they enter your home. You can add hooks for keys and coats, or a bench with storage capacity for shoes and other items. Try placing a console table which is narrow, does not take up too much space, and is not too intrusive. Add overhead lights or table lamps to add that feeling of brightness and space.

FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE:
You may want one or two pieces of furniture in a small space. Consider pieces that are multifunctional. A sleeper sofa is an obvious choice, giving comfort, versatility, and adding a guest room to your house. Instead of large sofas, why not add two love seats facing each other to open up the space? Trunks and ottomans can act as storage and add character to a room, in addition to providing a sound surface for a coffee table or table lamp. Tables that can extend or that collapse into smaller versions of themselves, will be far more practical than a rigid version used occasionally. They are also useful as a temporary desk or work service when needed, but stored when not. Likewise, folding chairs can also be put to one side when not in use, or even removed completely to another room if required somewhere else. If you have high ceilings, you might consider hanging your dining chairs from your walls in the Shaker manner. It will free up valuable space when not required and make it easier to move around a confined space.

North Beach – one of the BVI's many shores; a perfect place for inspiration
ARAGORN – My environment is crucial to my creative inspiration. I have studied in the UK and travelled around the world, but the stunning landscape of the BVI is where I wanted my studio. With the beautiful mangroves, lagoons, and reefs surrounding me, I am able to live in harmony with nature. From here, I can draw on local and global influences to create art that speaks to people all over the world.
INSPIRING CREATIVITY
FLAX – In architecture, we often speak of the importance of infusing our clients’ personal styles into the inspiration and design of their homes. I suspect in your creative arts your inspiration is also reflected in your lyrics and artistic works. Do you find this to be the case and do you have an example of how your inspiration is reflected in your style?

THE BVI IS BLESSED with rich turquoise waters, lush verdant hills, and endless sunshine which has inspired many great artists, writers, and musicians. Although the BVI is blessed with many notable creatives including Keidran ‘Iyaz’ Jones, Melanie Amaro, Foxy Callwood, and Joseph Hodge, they’re not the only ones who find the lushness of the BVI

as creative inspiration for their works. With the natural beauty of the BVI and the design inspiration that surrounds us, I’ve always found a great deal of motivation from other artists; therefore, I’ve asked a couple of local celebrities, musician Oren Hodge and sculptor Aragorn Dick-Read, to talk about where they find their creative encouragement.
FLAX – Personally, I find everything about the BVI to be inspiring. From the beautiful rolling green hills to the crystal blue waters and the sandy beaches, all of the BVI can inspire creativity in my architectural design; particularly as they reflect upon, and weave into the BVI’s natural beauty. With so much beauty around you, what inspires your creativity?

since I usually keep it moving to see what vibration will resonate with me, inspired by the sights and sounds of different locations. Afterward, I try to express the songs with a sense of simplicity so that they are relatable.
HODGE – My music is inspired by my experiences and what is around me. I write about what I feel and this is usually triggered by the things I see. Just going to the beach or sitting at a different porch in another area or being on another island all seem to trigger different types of songs. I guess this makes me a rolling stone when it comes to my writing spirit,

HODGE – My inspiration is definitely reflected in my style. My playing style is drawn to a simple, clean vibe. For example, I will take a complicated or busy cover song with beautiful lyrics and only play the necessary parts of the guitar so that the listener can focus on the lyrics. This tends to strike a chord with a particular emotion within the listener and makes for a better listener experience. I sometimes get complimented on my versions of some popular cover songs and I tend to feel that the delivery style is the biggest reason. ‘Simple minimalistic’ is also the style in which I carry myself personally. ARAGORN – As a Tortola-born and local artist, the BVI is the inspiration behind many of my pieces. In both my local and international art, I pull from

the natural beauty around the island to draw, sculpt, paint, and carve my various artisanal pursuits. Through my artistic style and energy, I create artwork that symbolises the unique wildlife and tropical landscape seen across the islands. I believe that living in the BVI has been key to sharing my creativity around the world. FLAX – I find inspiration in the BVI everywhere. Just walking out my door, I’m frequently mesmerised by everything that surrounds me which plays into my architectural designs, paying homage to them instead of overpowering them. Similarly, have any of your works been inspired by the landscape and the environment of the BVI? HODGE – Things that I see and situations that I experience set the tone for the songs that I write. One of my more popular songs Hummingbird was conjured up while enjoying the view from my balcony and watching a hummingbird suckle on the bloom of an aloe plant on the side of a hill. I was just amazed at how time seemed to stand still and at that moment created the line that would start the song and open the channel for the rest of the lyrics to flow. I have also written a few songs inspired by the natural beauty of the Virgin Islands.

Beach BBQ Chillin’ & Grillin’
After a very busy season in the BVI, the summer allows us to take some much-needed time off and enjoy the islands while they’re quiet. One of our favourite things to do, is put together a barbecue beach picnic and go exploring for the day. We want to keep it easy to prepare and equally easy to transport. Here are some tips that I would recommend to help you out on your beach picnics
1
KEEP IT SIMPLE! Plan your
menu with dishes that can be made the day before and sit in the fridge overnight – pre chopping and par cooking food items for the barbecue makes for a much easier, faster lunch.
2
BRING THE CORRECT UTENSILS. Admittedly, on
many occasions, I have forgotten key utensils. Thankfully, we are good at improvising! It is helpful if you prepare your picnic bag the night before with the utensils you might need: tongs, spatulas, chopping boards, knives, grill pans such as cast iron skillets, serving utensils for each dish, and of course, plates, cups and cutlery. Here, we have used eco-friendly food and beverage containers and equipment from Green Tech BVI. See their ad for details. You will also want to consider bringing foil, wet wipes, napkins and trash bags to ensure easy clean-up.
3
COOL BOXES. If you’re going
on a boat day or even driving to your favourite beach, it is important to keep your food cold until you’re ready to eat. Make sure that you designate one cool box for food only, and the other for drinks. I recently saw a great ‘hack’ for keeping your food cold without the risk of it getting soggy by having loose ice around. Fill water bottles and freeze until solid. Line the bottom of your cool box with them so they act as ice packs, and stack the food items on top. Ensure that the heavier, more sturdy items are on the bottom—such as Tupperware and meat items—and the lighter items at higher risk of bruising such as bread and fruit are on top. When the water bottles have melted by the end of the day, they provide a nice shower to rinse away the salt and sand.

Grilled lobster with garlic butter Growing up here, there have been many fond memories of going boating for the day. We would pack a picnic, grab a barbecue, and find the perfect beach to set up. On a few occasions, we have been so lucky where we have been on a beach and spotted a local fisherman selling fresh, right-out-the-ocean lobster. We would cut them in half, clean them up, and stick them on the grill for a short while and then lunch is served! This started to be almost a regular occurrence so I made sure to always bring a homemade garlic butter, just in case. If you’re pre-packing lobster, I would recommend that you clean
them at home, and transport them raw in an airtight container. Keep these cold. L E V E L E A SY/ I N T E R M E D I AT E INGREDIENTS 2-3 lb lobster Lemon wedges 8 oz butter 6 cloves crushed garlic Salt & pepper to taste METHOD FOR THE GARLIC BUTTER On low heat, melt the butter and crushed garlic together. Once melted and slightly foaming, turn off the heat and let sit for 30 minutes. Do not stir. After it has rested, scoop off the

foam, and discard. At this point, you can strain the butter into your container of choice. Discard the garlic in the strainer. *The butter should be refrigerated the night before, so make sure to bring a heat proof pan to melt on the barbecue. FOR THE LOBSTER Season with salt and pepper, place on the grill shell side down on medium/ high heat. As the lobster is cooking, ensure to put a bit of the butter on the meat to help keep its moisture. Based on a 2-3 lb lobster, it should take 10-15 minutes to cook. You can slightly under-cook it and let it finish cooking off the heat to achieve the perfect ‘doneness’. Squeeze over a bit of lemon juice and a little bit more butter if needed.
METHOD Mix together the ingredients for the marinade and put aside. Prepare the steak by cutting into 1 inch pieces and placing into a zip top bag along with the marinade. Refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight. Cut the bell peppers and red onion into about 1 /2 inch pieces, and place them into separate containers. Assemble the kebabs by alternating between the beef, peppers, and onions, in any order you wish. Place in transportable container or zip top bag. The grill should be about medium/high heat. Place kebabs on grill for about 2-3 minutes per side. If you have leftover marinade, drizzle over to baste while grilling. *Do NOT serve leftover marinade as dipping sauce, as it has contained raw meat.
Asian Beef Kebabs
Greek Quinoa
These beef kebabs are simple to make and delicious. They travel well and are very quick from the grill to the table. Top sirloin is an inexpensive cut of meat, but can be a bit tough. The soy sauce in the marinade will help tenderise it, but also grilling to about medium rare is about as far as you will want to take it to avoid it being chewy. If you would prefer another cut of beef, I would recommend tenderloin or rib eye, but bear in mind, these are more expensive. A helpful tip, put a little bit of foil on the pointy end of the kebab stick to avoid any punctures!
Quinoa is a grain that's full of protein and lots of other vitamins and minerals, especially recommended for vegetarians. Quinoa is so versatile as it's quite plain on its own; it needs some big flavours. The addition of a classic Greek salad offers a bit more especially for those that are vegetarian, and this can also be made vegan too!
