Casey Bay Little Dix Bay, Virgin Gorda Fully Restored Post Irma

Once in a while...very, very occasionally...we are asked to list a home for sale in the British Virgin Islands and everything about it is just about perfect. The proximity to a beautiful, very private sandy beach, breath taking views, breeze, design, layout, materials, quality of execution and finish, accommodation layout and furnishings and, of course, price. Casey Bay, perched just above the most private of beaches within the Rosewood Little Dix Bay Estate on Virgin Gorda, is such a home. The design takes into account the Rockafeller ethos of giving guests a beautiful place in balance with nature. The owners of Casey Bay, with the assistance of Berglund Architects certainly achieved this. And all with full access to the beach, restaurants and all other facilities at Little Dix Bay.

Soak it up The humble bathtub is getting a makeover – and a nice long soak has never been more delicious BY SARA SHERMAN

From clean minimalism to over-the-top opulence, bathtubs have never been more luxurious or spa-worthy.

J U N E 2 0 1 9 | 11

The traditional bathtub is more than functional now. Many bathrooms are making a beautiful tub the centrepiece of the space, so naturally, it has to be incredible.

THE IMAGERY OF SOAKING in a tub full of warm, sudsy water is enough to make anyone swoon. Add your favourite beverage and a good book or some streaming TV and it may be hard to extract you from the bath. But the soaking tub you may be imagining is getting an upgrade - a really luxe upgrade. From a vintage claw-footed tub to a new kind of whirlpool, step in for a soak and let your worries melt away.

Style The traditional bathtub is more than functional now. Many bathrooms are making a beautiful tub the centrepiece of the space, so naturally, it has to be incredible. A minimalist tub looks clean and modern. But just because it’s not over-the-top ornate doesn’t mean it’s any less luxurious. Modern design is sweeping the globe’s most lavish homes, as owners like how the rooms look and feel expensive without being cluttered. In line with the modern aesthetic, bathtubs don’t have to have rounded edges anymore. Rectangles and squares are finding their way into traditional oblong bathtub places, and can update the look of any space.

RIGHT A bathtub with style needs to fit into the aesthetic of the rest of the home while still being fantastic and functional.

A vintage clawfoot tub evokes the luxury of times gone by. Place it in a modern space and it will feel instantly elegant. Metal tubs have shed their hillbilly persona and have taken on a “Game of Thrones”, regal quality. From stainless steel and matte-painted metals to bronze and copper, a metal tub definitely is the star of the show. Bathtubs are no longer required to be white or light coloured anymore, either. Dark tubs are bringing drama to the bathroom and can make a normal day feel sexy and intriguing. New materials, including wood, cork, stone and even composites made from recycled materials are showing up in elegant bathrooms like never before.

Location If the bathtub is extraordinary on its own, then a free-standing location is the way to go. By making a statement with an incredible tub, the rest of the room will flow around it, creating an even more resort-like or spa experience. Freestanding tubs can increase a home’s value by more than 50 per cent, according to a recent Market Watch survey.

A fixed tub doesn’t mean it can’t be extravagant or elegant. Bathtubs can sometimes mimic the “infinity pool” effect - a great view out a large window and an overflow tub means the poolside experience can be enjoyed indoors, in any weather. Bathtubs aren’t confined by walls anymore, either. If an outdoor shower is a luxury, imagine watching the sunset and the stars coming out, viewing it all from a warm bath on the deck. Outdoor bathtubs surrounded by carefully curated greenery creates a rainforest effect and can feel exotic, even in the city.

Technology Whirlpools are nothing new. But bathtub technology is also getting an upgrade. While traditional whirlpools use water jets to create their signature churn, new “airbath” systems are using steady streams of warm air bubbles to create a gentle, babbling effect. All the senses are engaged with new bathtub tech. Chromatherapy uses light and colour to create a serene atmosphere for relaxation. Coloured lights can enhance a soaking experience by using calming hues like blue and purple, while red offers a romantic backdrop for a couple’s evening in. Aromatherapy has long been used by massage therapists, and it’s finding its way into bath tech as well. Some modern tubs come with an aromatherapy system built in, allowing a user to choose a favourite essential oil that can be

diffused during a relaxing soak. If you’ve ever been tempted to totally submerge yourself but refrain because of the risk of the tub running over, this tub upgrade is for you. “Overflow” models provide a tub inside a tub. An inner tub is surrounded by a channel that

catches any excess water and circulates it back into the bath, making total submersion possible and deliriously comfortable. From free-standing statement tubs to an incredible soak in a pool of bubbling bliss, an upgraded bathtub has never been more desirable. ■

IT IS A well-known fact in the real estate world that kitchens and bathrooms are the key selling points of a home. It is always worth investing your time and money in a good design to achieve a quality bathroom and today’s trends are taking bathrooms to a whole new level. Bathrooms are no longer a

purely functional and utilitarian space but rather a sanctuary from the outside world, a domestic oasis to relax and rejuvenate from the stresses of a busy life - your own personal spa at home. Many home bathroom designs are drawing inspiration from hotel bathrooms and spas, resulting in

some truly indulgent bathrooms, which are a relaxation destination in their own right. In keeping with the current trend in hotel bathroom design, open concept style bathrooms are becoming more popular in new build and remodelled properties. With our tropical climate and

your bathroom and up the style stakes in your master suite or guesthouse. “Bathrooms are definitely more important than they were,” explains interior designer and owner of the leading interiors store House, Fran Morrell. “Larger bathrooms are increasingly popular. Bathrooms

are seen now as spa options. More plumbing options are available – rain showers, sauna showers, etc. The wet room is much more common now – an open plan shower where the floor is a continuation of the main room but the water drains away, with or without a shower partition.”

Oil Nut Bay on Virgin Gorda offers spectacular baths, like this outdoor shower (image courtesy of Oil Nut Bay and Christian Horan Photography).

Al fresco showers have long been a favourite design element in the islands and are continuously popular in private homes and rental villas.

24 | V I P R O P E R T Y & YA C H T

The biggest challenge with designing a large bathroom is working out how to break up the area. You don’t want the key features to get lost. Keeping all pieces in proportion to the room is essential. For smaller bathroom spaces adding an antique mirror perfectly positioned to reflect the view, not only creates an elegant effect but also makes the room appear larger.

bvipropertyyacht.com

Al fresco showers have long been a favourite in our islands and that design element is as popular as ever. Gone are the glass block walls and terracotta tiles of old and in with natural stonewalls and unobtrusive glass panels. This is a recurring trend in many of the new generation of villas in the BVI and there are no finer examples of this style than in the villas of Oil Nut Bay, the prestigious luxury resort community in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda. The colour palettes making an impact this year are monotones: greys and whites with touches of black. Soft beiges and coral stone are also relevant for tropical bathrooms. With the choice of bathroom hardware ever expanding, brass and matte black are the key trends to look out for. A very simple and cost-effective option to take your bathroom over

the top in style is to add a statement wall. Using unusual or colourful tiles is a great way to create an eye-catching wall feature. When considering your choice for flooring Fran Morrell suggests: “Larger tiles make more of an impact – a cleaner look and less or no grout. Larger tiles are requested more plus the use and direction of tiles is also being played with to create interest, used diagonally or vertically up a wall rather than the traditional horizontal placement. Marble is also popular. Mixing marble tile on the wall with wood accents and floor brings a more contemporary mid-century feel.” Try adding a stylish rug to turn the floor in to a focal point. So what are you waiting for? Fill your Pinterest board with pictures of your favourite hotel bathrooms and start planning the bathroom of your dreams. ■

THE BATHROOMS OF first-class hotels are defined by their luxury, style and elegance. More than the sum of their sinks and showerheads, hotel bathrooms serve as luxurious sanctuaries, providing the comforts of home while transporting guests to another realm. Now jet-setters are looking for the same spa-like experience from the design of the bathroom within their homes. Here are some design ideas you can implement into your home to achieve the same opulence of the worlds most luxurious hotels.

Jaw-Dropping Views A deep-soaker bathtub is perhaps the truest hotel-spa indulgence. What’s one thing that can make your bathing experience even better? Sweeping ocean views from your bath so you can relax and soak it all in. To achieve the perfect positioning, first find your ideal view then plan for your tub to sit behind full-height glass windows with no obstructions to the amazing vistas. To take it a step further, connect a private terrace off your bathroom with an outdoor shower or tub to create the ultimate stay-cation experience.

RIGHT Don’t be afraid to venture

Technology In the most luxurious and exclusive resorts, the bathroom fittings are outfitted with the latest technology with the hope of the user experience being intuitive and uncomplicated. Take a page from their playbook and leverage technology to improve convenience and comfort in your home. Smart Glass offers you transparency and privacy you may need for your shower walls that can be switched from clear to frosted with the flip of a switch. Another smart feature to include in your bathroom design is a modern and stylish in-mirror TV. This waterproof television mirror sits behind the mirror’s surface using a vanishing effect when not in use so that bathers can watch their favourite show while performing bathroom routines.

Made for Entertaining For those that love hosting, having a line of guests waiting outside your powder room can be worrisome. Taking inspiration from the shared guest areas at hotels, two water closets in a one-bathroom suite can be a functional design option for homeowners that need to accommodate for a fair amount of family and friends at once. The layout can consist of a communal space with one or two vanities, a lounge area and then two private washrooms. To ensure the comfort and chicness of a five-star property for this shared bathroom, decorate the space with an opulent aesthetic with features like ornate mosaic tiles, freestanding vanities, and a showstopping light fixture.

A great freestanding tub and plenty of space to move around make any bathroom feel like a hotel getaway.

Eco-Chic Hotel designers know that ecofriendly bathroom design provides guests with wellness benefits without sacrificing performance or elegance. Homeowners can easily incorporate the same sustainable design trends seen in many luxury resort bathrooms. Choosing natural materials for your bathtub, such as copper or stone, can make bathing an exotic and calming experience. Another refreshing accent for the bath gaining popularity luxury hospitality spaces are living green walls. Vertical gardens in your bathing area can improve health by absorbing pollutants and providing an instant calming effect. The most important factor in any successful bathroom design project is to use quality materials and expert craftsmanship. By surrounding yourself with luxurious finishes and furnishings, plush amenities, and breathtaking views, you too can recreate a high-end hotel bathroom within your home. â–

LIKE ANY ASPECT of Caribbean living, constructing or renovating a bathroom in the British Virgin Islands requires careful consideration of some of the region’s more volatile and inconvenient elements. Weather durability, import costs, shipping – all these things need to be evaluated in the BVI on top of the normal slew of factors any homeowner weighs before embarking on a big interior design project. What type of wood, for example, holds up best if a hurricane causes flooding in your home? What type of countertop presents the most low-maintenance cleaning option if you plan to rent out your villa? How much extra should you expect to pay to have a custom vanity constructed in the islands? And it’s not all practical considerations: a bathroom style that’s desired in the United States or the United Kingdom may not work as well in the BVI. “In the US and UK there is a big move towards darker, sanctuarytype bathrooms, but often these trends do not translate to a warmer Caribbean environment,” explained Fran Morrell, the owner of House BVI, an interior design, furniture and decoration business that operates out of Road Town. Instead, Caribbean homeowners tend to prefer more understated, open designs.

“Larger, walk-in ‘party showers’ are now more popular,” Morrell said, “Bigger bathrooms are more sought after. Static shower panels are easier to maintain than moveable doors. The aim is to create a spa-type, minimalist feel.” When paired with a simple black-and-white colour scheme, such designs can have a classic but masculine atmosphere. Marble countertops and/or wall tiles fit with that aesthetic and have recently been a trendy choice for bathrooms in the territory, according to Morrell.

Keegan, who also designs and buys for Arawak, has recently worked on custom vanity and sink projects for customers both in the BVI and the wider region, and – as with projects for any other part of a property – practical Caribbean considerations are never far from his mind. “I work in solid teak for all furniture as it stands up to the harsh climate in the BVI,” Keegan explained. “[During] the recent hurricanes, when a lot of houses were awash with water, any nonsolid wooden furniture – chipboard, composite – just disintegrated as it soaked up water from the storm and also the humidity afterwards.” Teak also has other benefits, Keegan noted: It’s a hard, oily wood

that termites don’t have an appetite for, and it can be maintained and refurbished easily. “I try and use reclaimed teak as much as possible to be sustainable or plantation teak when a customer requests a cleaner, more modern look,” the Arawak owner said.

Shipping and Imports Keegan recently designed a freestanding teak vanity with a marble countertop and an undermount sink for the “Leha Lo” villa on Necker Island. Space was the issue in the villa’s small bathroom, so he designed a curved-front cabinet that fit well and gave the vanity a clean appearance. Keegan built the unit in Bali and transported it in a full container to the BVI, which cut down on shipping costs. Still, he estimates projects are 25 per cent more expensive to finish in the

islands, given their isolation. To make the process easier, he designs free-standing vanities so – after being shipped – they can just slot up against a wall have their piping connected by a plumber. Homeowners who try to import materials on their own face serious risks. “It’s always better to try and source locally if possible, as the importer is responsible for any breakage in shipping,” Morrell explained. “If you cannot find what you are looking for and decide to import yourself, make sure you overbuy by at least 15 per cent, as you are not able to run down to the nearest tile shop to buy more if needed.” ■

ABOVE Choose materials that can withstand the climate and suit the style of the space. Don’t forget to factor in shipping times!

HAVE YOU EVER imagined walking into a clean, crisp, uncluttered bathroom? No laundry baskets with clothing and towels spilling over the floor, no rows of hair and body products all over the vanity - it sounds heavenly. Have no fear, you can make this happen. With a little bit of spring cleaning and a bucket full of willpower you can get rid of those non-essential items, expired medications and out-of-date clutter. Having a minimalist approach to any room - but especially in the kitchen and the bathroom - will LEFT AND ABOVE Keeping the great view at center stage means not needing other “stuff” to make a bathroom great.

provide more space, allow you to be better organised and enable you to reduce the inventory of things that you think you need, but really don’t. The end result will be more practical, efficient and pleasing to the eye. Minimalism is all about having what is necessary and required, but no more. Using the mantras “less is more” and “a place for everything and everything in its place”, be inspired to de-clutter and start afresh.

Minimalism in the Bath Start by discarding any unwanted and expired products. Most of us tend to collect and accumulate a lot of different bathroom products and

medications which are way past their use by date. Next, be better organised with the essentials that you do need in every bathroom. Using clear storage jars for things such as cotton buds, face pads and hairpins will keep such items ready at hand, easy to find and organised instead of scattered all over the vanity. Keep those potpourri pots for another room – they don’t suit a minimalist bathroom and the contents tend to collect dust. The look you want to create is clean and straightforward with minimal fussiness. Since a bathroom is usually the smallest room in most homes, having a lot of items in it will make the room look too cluttered, small and difficult to use efficiently.

that would normally be unused. Wall tiles are a necessity in some areas of the bathroom, like the shower or as a splashback behind the vanity. But they are an obvious way to brighten up a small sometimes dark space or enhance a sometimes dull and neglected area of your home. When using tile for the floors, always make sure they are non-slip and easy to clean, avoid rugs or mats as they will get dirty quickly and they can harbour germs and mildew unless cleaned regularly.

If you are going to paint any of the walls in your bathroom, be realistic when choosing colours. If there isn’t a lot of natural light available or if it is a relatively small space, you should lean towards lighter colours or shades. Darker colours will make the room feel small and more claustrophobic and absorb what little light there is. Using a monotone colour scheme can appear boring at first but white is the colour that represents fresh, clean and cool to most people. For obvious reasons, we have to clean the bathroom more than any other room in the house for health and sanitary reasons. Using lighter colours will make this tedious chore easier and the end result more rewarding. Now that you have a more organised space with less cleaning and more importantly a positive approach to minimalism, why not get inspired and start the minimalist look in another room. Beginning with a small room will give you the experience of moving to another space in your home. Go ahead, give it a go and see what you are capable of achieving. â–

SEA STYLE: SUPERYACHT BATHS

Superyachts represent the pinnacles of luxury in every element, from glass-walled infinity pools to helipads to onboard movie theatres. Their bathrooms are often no different: lavish, glimmering reflections of their owners’ affluent tastes. BY CONOR KING DEVITT

THE OWNER’S BATHROOM on Feadship’s Lady Christine is an opulent sight to behold: the walls, floors and counters are lined with cream and yellow onyx, the vanity has curved, inlaid cherry cabinet doors and the mirrors are interspersed with engraved glass panels with silver mirrored backing, all of which combine to create an image of luxury that is bold, ornate and one of a kind. And as of Feb. 1st, it can all be yours, along with the rest of the 68-metre motorized superyacht, for a cool $69 million. The nine-year-old vessel – ranked as having one of the best bathrooms of any superyacht in the world by Boat International – epitomises an interior design trend in the superyacht world: luxury maxed out to incomprehensible levels, but customised with individual flourishes that reflect the unique tastes of whatever billionaire owner is behind the wheel.

Compare the ornate bathrooms on the Lady Christine, for example, with the more rustic – but equally luxurious – offerings onboard the Phinisi-style charter yacht Dunia Baru. The sailing yacht has a master suite bathroom that’s bedecked in fine-quality, Borneo-sourced wood on the floors, walls, and matching vanities, and it comes equipped with an oversized “rainforest” shower to match its understated, spa-like feel. The Indonesia-based Dunia Baru is currently open for chartering – for $94,500 weekly.

Abeking & Rasmussen’s 74.5-metre Elandess – winner of the prizes for “Best Interior Design, Motor Yachts 500 GT and above,” “Best General Arrangement & Deck Design,” and “Best Lifestyle Feature Design” – is renowned for its art collection and unique furniture. The vessel’s bathrooms play on that theme – highlighting art rather than lavishness – with yellow-and-black mosaic tiles lining the walls for an elegant but understated aesthetic.

Amels’ 57.7-metre Volpini 2 won the judge’s commendation for best lighting design at the 2019 BIDI Awards, as well as the prize for “Best Ecological Design & Operation Innovation.” Amels advertises the yacht’s master bath – equipped with a full-size tub – as being adorned with white Thassos marble that contrasts with aquamarine and light Azul Cielo blue stone. The bathroom is also reportedly decorated by abstract resin art panels by Alex Turco, Boat International reports. Ferretti’s Custom Line 38.4 metre Vista Blue won “Best New Production Yacht Design” at the BIDI Awards, and if that victory is any indication, bigger will be better in terms of designing bathrooms on superyachts in the future. Vista Blue’s owner’s suite is 35 square metres in size and comes with a full-beam bathroom and separate dressing area, according to Superyacht Times, which named it the “Superyacht of the Week” last July.

Special features Some yacht builders have even managed to gain renown based off the sheer extravagance of some of their bathroom features. Boat International opined that the CRNbuilt Saramour, a 46-metre yacht built in 2014, had the best superyacht shower in the business – a centrally located unit entirely enclosed in glass and entered through a pivot door. The yachting magazine also noted that Feadship’s 44.6 metre Lady May had the industry’s best guest bathroom, which reportedly stretches across the beam of the yacht and makes good use of glass and mirrors to make its already unusually large size seem even bigger. Like the Lady Christine, the Lady May is also available – and it even saw a price reduction in March. You can now enjoy its full-beam, whitewalled guest bathroom for bargainbin price of about $28 million. ■

FROM THE CRYSTAL clear waters of Varadero’s beaches to the smoking lounges of famed cigar factories, Cuba offers vibrant culture, incredible music and an air of nostalgia for visitors to enjoy.

With brightly coloured classic cars and plenty to see and do, visitors will feel the vibrant pulse of Cuba in the capital city, Havana.

Havana While there are many beautiful cities to see in Cuba, perhaps none is more famous than the capital city of Havana. The heart of the island’s culture and notoriety, taking a tour of the city is like stepping onto the set of an old movie. With brightly coloured classic cars and plenty to see and do, touring Havana is one of the best ways to truly feel the pulse of Cuba. No matter how “touristy” it may seem, being driven by a local guide in a vintage Oldsmobile or Buick for a tour of Old Havana

Food Cubans know that food is life, and they certainly know how to celebrate life! From fried pork masitas and plantain tostones, Cuban dishes are simple yet full of flavour. Rice and beans are a staple, but every good Cuban cook knows how to make a mean ropa vieja. Translated literally as “old clothes”, meat traditionally beef or lamb - is braised in a tomato sauce and shredded when tender. If a late-night bite is what you’re craving, look for the medianoche sandwich (often called a Cuban sandwich in other parts of the world). Ham, pork and pickles on toasty bread slathered with mustard is just what the doctor ordered after an evening of dancing in Havana’s nightclubs. The street food is also not to be missed! From churros and guava milkshakes to pork burgers and pizza, it’s not hard to find a delicious bite on the cheap.

Art The Teatro Nacional hosts many great performances, including the annual ballet festival. Live performance art is easy to find, and worth taking in a show, be it dance, theatre, or especially live music. Latin music, jazz and plenty of other live music venues can be found all over Havana, but the bustling pedestrian mall Calle Obispo is bursting at the seams with sounds of Cuba Fusterlandia is a public art wonderland created by artist José Fuster. By using small, brightlycoloured mosaic tiles, Fuster has covered nearly every surface of the neighbourhood - including mailboxes and gates. A fun walk through the spectacle presents many Instagramworthy moments!
