From the Editor Spring is traditionally perceived as a time of new life, growth, and renewal. While this may be true in its philosophical translation, in the BVI, it signifies a term of events that remind us why this is the global capital for sailing. There is a rise of cheerful sportsmanship and festivity as the yacht regattas of the Virgin Islands get underway, attracting visitors from all over the world. Keeping in step with the sailing season, our cover feature property parallels this joyful period, presenting Kokomo – a yachtie’s dream residence. Situated on the island of Great Camanoe, the unique lifestyle is tailored to a sailor’s passion with a community of like-minded individuals, who relish the exclusivity of their friendly isle. VIPY Stylish Spaces continues to glide over the islands, seeking more properties to enter the competition and unveil their beautiful design to the public with great prizes in store. We review USVI’s Interiors and their new showroom, exhibiting many options in home design trends and industry advancements. Molten Drambuie Brownies!
As can be expected, having hosted hundreds of families on board Lolalita in the beautiful British Virgin Islands, many requests have been presented to us as crew. These can be divided into two categories: places to visit—for example The Baths, Willy T’s, The Caves, Foxy’s, North Sound—and food desires. One of my favourite requests was to make absolutely nothing but chocolate desserts for the entire week. I went through my usual repertoire of recipes and then picked the brain of my husband/business partner/fellow food lover, Captain Ernie. He suggested toying with a brownie that incorporated some delicious liqueur – and so Molten Drambuie Brownies were born...
Ingredients
3 heaping tablespoons dark cocoa powder 1.25 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon Ceylon cinnamon 10 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons canola oil 5 ounces 80% dark chocolate 2 cups brown sugar 4 eggs, lightly beaten 6 tablespoons Drambuie liqueur • Heat oven to 350º F. Grease a 13x9-inch pan with non-stick spray • Sift together cocoa, flour, salt, and cinnamon • Using a double-boiler method, melt butter, oil, and chocolate. Add brown sugar and mix well. Add eggs, slowly, mixing until smooth. Add liqueur. Slowly add flour mixture, beating until incorporated. Pour into prepared pan, and bake for 20 to 30 minutes. Brownies should be just barely done, in a ‘molten’ state Serve brownies warm with a dusting of powdered sugar, cocoa powder, and chopped pistachios. This recipe is more than enough for 8 to enjoy

Watching the sunset behind the hills surrounding the colourful Soper's Hole Marina, guests finish their authentic Italian meal while the sound of smooth jazz, Bossa, and chill-out tracks turn into urban beats, travelling upstairs from the ground floor. The Scaramouche experience transforms from fine-dining restaurant to urban-chic cocktail lounge where a relaxed vibe meets European finesse. Distinct in Scaramouche’s character is its delivery of a little taste of Italy in the Caribbean tropical setting of the BVI. Owners Roberto Selvi, mixologist, and Chiara Valsecchi, head chef, have worked to uphold their reputation as one of Tortola’s top locations to dine, enjoy an exciting night of music, and sip premium cocktails from the moment guests witness the most magnificent sunsets to the time they finish dancing. Visitors and residents are treated to a one-of-a-kind experience when they visit Scaramouche as the artful presentation of Chiara’s gourmet Italian cuisine, accompanied by Roberto’s cocktails infused with passion and flavour, complement the ambiance of the waterside restaurant. “My job is my heart and my passion. I want to give the opportunity to concoct a custom drink for each individual guest, giving my own spin on their favourite vintage cocktails,” said Roberto as he stood behind the bar in front of an extensive range of local and imported liquors and spirits. The mixologist is renowned for his use of fresh ingredients and attention to detail. Obtaining his formal education at Association of Barmen and Sommeliers, Roberto became acquainted with a variety of mixology techniques, serving his cocktails in unique-shaped chilled glasses and paying special attention to the visual presentation. If you’re craving some caffeine, Scaramouche proudly uses a beautiful vintage Italian espresso machine to make all their lattes and coffees. The same coffee is also used in some ‘
of Roberto’s delicious signature cocktails like Caffe Shakerato using espresso, brown sugar, and Rumchata. The mixologist also takes control of the music from behind the bar. If the customers want to relax, Roberto will play smooth tunes, but if the atmosphere is lively, he will spin a track to get the crowd dancing.
“Roberto pays a lot of attention to the moment of the day and chooses the right song, as well as ‘reading’ the client and playing tunes that match the vibe of the moment,” said Chiara Valsecchi, Head Chef at Scaramouche. The lounge offers a lighter fare menu of bites where the main favourites are the delicious cold cuts and cheeses imported from Italy. On Sundays, Scaramouche serves its brunch menu at the lounge, offering unique selections such as Truffled Eggs Benedict and ‘Fantasy’ Bloody Marys to the mellow tunes of Oren Hodge or keyboard covers by Caave. In the evening, authentic Italian pizzas can be enjoyed whilst watching a blissful sunset to wind down the weekend. Don’t miss Scaramouche’s Fandango Nights, as the exclusive large parties with special entertainment and guest artists occur only a few times a year. Whether it be an intimate dinner at the fine dining restaurant, imbibing creative cocktails at sunset, or dancing for hours to the hottest new music, Scaramouche is a rare venue for any visitor or resident of the BVI to experience Italian culture in the midst of tropical paradise.

I love White Bay (WB).
Escape for a Day on Your Own Private Yacht
Since moving to the BVI, I’ve ventured on numerous excursions which often include a stop at
this tourist hotspot on Jost Van Dyke (JVD). What I hadn’t experienced, however, was what happens on this charming island once the sun goes down. I again became a tourist in my own town when I spent a weekend over on JVD. My friend Mickey and I arrived by ferry on Saturday morning and were accommodated in a beautiful 2-bedroom villa at White Bay Villas and Seaside Cottages, which delivered panoramic vistas of the ocean and an unrivalled view of the bay. After settling in, we immediately headed down a short trail to White Bay and its familiar setting of quirky beach-bars, hammocks between palm trees, and of course, the turquoise sea. Boats of all sizes were moored in the bay where visitors danced on their vessels and one by one jumped into the water to swim ashore. Our favourite bar—Soggy Dollar—is renowned for their entertaining bartenders, who interact with the patrons as they await a drink from the legendary ‘home of the painkiller.’ The majority of the establishments are decorated with an eclectic blend of Caribbean knick-knacks and serve beach-bar cuisine with an island twist.

We were greeted by two friends, who arrived on their boat from Tortola and wound up joining a group of tourists in a game of ‘Let’s Get Ready to Toss the Lime.’ Frequently played at WB, participants form a circle and toss a lime in the air, trying to keep it up with one hand – no, it’s not easy…especially with a margarita in the other hand. After a day munching on greasy conch fritters, playing giant-sized board games, and taking

too many photos, we retreated to the villa to prepare for our first night ever on Jost.
It was crowded and after stuffing our faces, we spent the rest of the night socialising and showing off on the dance floor.
Surprisingly, many of the casual beach-bars we visited during the day turn

intoxicating sunrise.
We decided to try Great Harbour for evening entertainment, only a short cab ride over the hill. Also lined with oceanfront restaurants and souvenir shops, we chose Foxy’s, a restaurant serving a Caribbean buffet with favourites including jerk chicken, fried plantains, and succulent barbecue ribs.
Another day was spent working on our tans at White Bay before catching the last ferry home. Mickey and I were surprised to learn all of the activities offered over on JVD. Our hosts informed us of the numerous attractions available including natural gems such as the Bubbly Pool, and an array of water-sports and unique excursions – next time we visit, we plan to go on a glass bottom boat which at night uses LED lights to attract the fascinating marine life. We both agreed that when we need to ‘get off the rock’ for a weekend, White Bay is first choice.

Governor’s Gourmet Gathering VISAR holds its largest annual fundraiser On November 27, 2015, Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR) held its largest annual fundraising event at His Excellency the Governor, John C. Duncan’s residence. Every year, the BVI community gets dressed up for this elegant evening affair where guests are invited to sample gourmet canapés from 15 of the BVI’s best restaurants, sip cocktails, socialise, enjoy music, and be entertained by a live auction. The event raised just over $31,000 from ticket sales, auction items, and personal donations in support of VISAR’s mission to save lives at sea.
