Message from the Premier of the Virgin Islands Honourable Andrew A. Fahie Welcome, one and all, As Premier of these beautiful islands, we are delighted to welcome you with BVILOVE to our home, the British Virgin Islands. Our small cluster of islands with secluded anchorages, splendid beaches, world-class marine industry, and favourable trade winds, has combined to earn us the reputation of ‘Sailing Capital of the World.’ After a brief hiatus to preserve the health and safety of all residents and guests, our magnificent archipelago has re-opened and re-emerged to showcase even more stunning pristine land and seascapes. But more significantly, as a people emerging from recent adversity, we have shown resilience and returned to our core values, which we call BVILOVE. BVILOVE is a mantra that unites not only the people of the Territory, but resonates through all the sectors of the economy and the various aspects of our lives. We love our British Virgin Islands, and we invite you to love this Territory too. In fact, we know that many of our loyal guests have had a lifetime love affair with the British Virgin Islands, and first-time guests quickly embrace us as well. I am pleased to say that we have a renewed focus on showcasing authentic experiences in the British Virgin Islands, celebrating our people, our culture, and rich heritage of hospitality. I congratulate and express thanks to Virgin Islands Property & Yacht magazine for joining us in spreading BVILOVE with this special issue themed, The Authenticity of Our People, Our Culture, Our Cuisine, Our Environment. I am sure you will enjoy the interesting features of our people, culture, cuisine, luxury sailing, real estate, environment, events, and business. However, we hope that your encounter with BVILOVE does not end in the pages of this magazine but that you will explore our many islands and cays and truly indulge in the many authentic experiences that we have to offer. Experience our local cuisine prepared by award-winning chefs or local cooks – I’m sure you will love our national dish of fungi and fish; go sailing with our many experienced captains and explore secret get-aways, where cobalt blue waves splash against powder white sand beaches; take a safari bus over our lush green hillsides for the most spectacular views; meet some of our colourful characters who are guaranteed to make your visit memorable; discover our many attractions from museums in Tortola, the colourful, laidback beach bars on Jost Van Dyke and nearby cays, the Greater Baths National Park in Virgin Gorda, the Conch Shell Mounds in Anegada and the many other unique experiences found throughout our entire chain of islands. At the end of your trip, we believe that the only difficulty you will face will be that of choosing your favourite island. If you are visiting, I implore you to take time for what I would describe as an amazing combination of pleasurable activities, unforgettable sightseeing adventures, and nature-induced relaxation, which will rejuvenate your body, mind, and soul. Our people are eager to welcome all visitors to our Territory, whether you are a repeat visitor or if you are making your maiden voyage to the British Virgin Islands. Welcome again and thank you for making the British Virgin Islands your destination of choice. Do have an enjoyable visit with us, and we look forward to greeting you with BVILOVE on your next visit! With BVILOVE, Premier Hon. Andrew A. Fahie

FIRST OPENED IN 1990, House of Luxury began its jewellery-making empire in Sint Maarten. After a second store opened there, the high-end jewellery house opened a third location at Tortola Pier Park in 2016. For more than three decades, House of Luxury has been dazzling customers with top-notch service and an unparalleled selection of gold, silver, watches, fine jewellery, and investment gems. Owner Sanjay Surtani learned the jewellery business from his father and grandfather. He would help in the store at an early age processing credit card orders, creating receipts for customers, wrap purchases or bring drinks to browsing clients. He loved helping out and received a modest allowance for his work. As he grew he watched the family-owned business carefully and began taking an interest in the jewellery-making side of things, allowing his creative side to shine. “As a traditional Indian family, jewellery plays a huge role in our culture, festivities and everyday life. I got most of my jewellery when I was born, as it is customary to adorn your child, grandchild, niece or nephew etc. with jewels and gems to welcome them to

“We offer more than just products; we create an experience to mark the memorable day when you treated yourself or someone you love to something special.” - S an j ay S urtani the world. In addition, jewellery marks many occasions in our life, including memorable birthdays, graduations, weddings and so on,” said Surtani. After graduating with a Masters of Science in finance from Birbeck College, University of London, Surtani had planned to work in the financial field. Then the 2008 financial crisis happened, and Surtani was convinced by his grandfather to work in the family business, even temporarily, while the crisis calmed down. Surtani spent a number of months in New York City and earned his certification from the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the industry leader in diamond and precious gemstone education. A love for gems began as he learned about gemological chemistry and how rare they actually are. “What many people don’t realise is that the beauty in gemstones actually lies in their imperfections.

It’s what makes every stone unique,” said Surtani. Soon after, Surtani began working at the family business in Sint Maarten and learned the ins and outs of running a bustling high-end jewellery business. “When owning your own jewellery retail business, you are not only a jeweller but an accountant, marketing director, gemologist, sales directory and so much more. This is when I really started growing and appreciating all that came with being a jeweller. It allowed me to express myself creatively and this is what I enjoyed the most. Whether it was the marketing side of the business with ad campaigns, digital posts, tailored events or the design side, where I gained experience in making custom pieces from existing client gemstones or brand new pieces which allowed you to mark an important occasion in life. This is when I feel happiest doing and it’s what keeps driving me,” said Surtani.

High Jewellery

Jewellery lovers come in many different tastes, but true jewellery devotees know the difference between “fine jewellery” or more mass-market pieces and what are known as “high jewellery” pieces. High jewellery doesn’t have one specific definition, but of course is made from the highest quality materials. From top-quality metals and the most unique and precious gems, high jewellery pieces are often custom made and not only hold their value but often gain value over time. House of Luxury designs custom pieces for clients with every kind of gem and metal to create a truly personalised, wearable piece of art. “There is so much excitement and satisfaction when you are able to create a unique piece of jewellery for a client as it helps them mark an occasion or a happy moment in their life. It creates a memory and an experience and allows them to own their own little piece of art and this, for me, is something that is priceless,” said Surtani. In addition to custom pieces, House of Luxury also has curated relationships with major jewellery

houses all around the world to bring the highest quality gemstones and pieces to their customers. “We have a great relationship with all of our brands. Many are large global names that bring plenty of expertise and heritage with them. Many of the brands we work with are still privately owned and therefore have a family or personal feel to them,” Surtani explained. Many of the brands that House of Luxury works with are environmentally sustainable and conscious. For example, just as there is fair-trade coffee, there is fair mined gold, which provides transparency of the origins of the gold. House of Luxury also has a due diligence process with diamonds, in which the stones are sourced through the Kimberley Process to ensure they know that every gem comes through legitimate channels. Whether it’s dining with the Scheufele family (owners of Chopard) or connecting with brands that share common values and ethics, the Surtani family is committed to only providing the best to their clients and customers. “When deciding which brands to work with and what products to

Although a niche market, high-end watches and timepieces are a musthave for many collectors and people wanting to make a statement with something they may wear every day. “We offer different ranges of timepieces and mainly concentrate on Swiss watches. The Swiss watch industry has all the history, heritage and tradition that has made the watch industry what it is today,” said Surtani. Watches have levels of complexity that range from traditional, threehand timepieces to the “ultimate” in timepieces, the Tourbillon. When choosing or investing in a timepiece, Surtani wants people to remember that these are works of art, and the watch often “speaks” to its owner. Some watches take more than a year to create and are sometimes assembled, taken apart and then reassembled to make sure everything fits seamlessly together and functions perfectly. Surtani recommends taking a few different aspects of a timepiece into account when choosing a watch: HERITAGE Knowing the pedigree, know-how and expertise of a particular manufacturer can tell you a lot about the quality of their pieces. “Take Jaquet Droz for instance: they have been around since 1738 and are one of the oldest manufacturers in the world. Their timepieces are extremely limited and most pieces are made in small batches. Their speciality lies in their automaton movements, which to put in simple terms are self-operating mechanisms that perform a predetermined function,” Surtani explained.

bvipropertyyacht.com

SCARCITY/RARITY The fewer there are, the more value they hold. Finding pieces that are created in a limited quantity or are numbered are always sought after by collectors. COMPLICATIONS/ CERTIFICATIONS The more complicated a timepiece is, or the more moving parts it has, the more craftsmanship and expertise is required to ensure the piece performs at an optimal level. Complications are viewed as a watchmaker’s ability and

innovation level, and many makers are always trying to improve their complication skills. COSC and Geneva Seal certifications both ensure that timepieces have gone through rigorous testing and offer testament to the accuracy of a watch’s timekeeping. IN-HOUSE In-house movements mean that the actual parts and pieces of the timepiece are produced within the company and not purchased elsewhere. This aspect is important

as it shows the capabilities of the watchmaker and also makes the piece very unique to that particular brand. PERSONALITY Every watch offers something different and exciting and the piece must speak to its owner. Jewellery is often seen as a “women’s” thing, but men like to look sharp as well. A high-quality watch is something Surtani believes allows men to splurge without looking too over the top or flashy.

Jewellery Box Essentials

According to House of Luxury high jewellery designers Jewellery is very personal, but the designers at House of Luxury have a list of must-haves for every woman’s jewellery box. DIAMOND STUDS There is nothing more practical than a pair of diamond stud earrings. They are perfect for every occasion, whether on a trip to the supermarket or a dinner with special friends and loved ones, diamond studs are an effortless, timeless piece. HOOP EARRINGS From classic to edgy, small to big, round to square, hoop earrings really allow you to express yourself. Sanjay Surtani’s favourite style are diamond “In and Out” hoops. These are hoops with brilliant diamond set on the outer circumference as well as the rear interior circumference, meaning all you see are diamonds! TENNIS BRACELET OR BANGLE A simple single row of diamonds around your wrist screams timeless elegance. In Indian culture, there is always a custom that a lady should never leave her home without two articles of jewellery: a pair of earrings and a bangle or bracelet! SOLITAIRE DIAMOND PENDANT What better way to match any piece of jewellery than a beautiful diamond being set in white gold on a dainty chain. A diamond solitaire pendant makes it look like a little piece of heaven is floating around your neck. DIAMOND RING/RIGHTHAND RING This is the piece that I feel you can have the most fun with. Whether a striking right-hand cocktail ring as a statement piece or a diamond solitaire engagement ring, there isn’t another piece of jewellery that allows you to express your personality as much as a ring!

“A good timepiece is a precision instrument which showcases a watchmaker’s talent and ability. It’s seen these days more as a work of art than just a piece of jewellery. Men enjoy working with us because of the range of products we offer: timepieces, necklaces, to different types of gold as well as stones. In addition, the custom design element is one most-used by men when they are making jewellery for themselves as well as for their loved ones,” said Surtani.

NOTHING SAYS “LUXURY” like a private island. And in the BVI, a new wave of “purposeful luxury” has emerged in The Aerial BVI. The new, all-inclusive private island destination combines the beauty of these islands with a unique opportunity for resort guests to reconnect to what really matters in their lives. Perched atop Buck Island overlooking the Sir Francis Drake Channel, the expansive 43-acre property offers impeccable views of 14 surrounding islands and notto-be-missed sunsets. Designed to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor experiences, the resort itself is fused with the island’s topography to make “nature’s little secret” - the British Virgin Islands themselves - the star of the show. Five residences - Unity House, Faith House, Serenity House, Love Villa and Grace Villa - can sleep more than 30 guests at a time. Spacious rooms with en suite baths and outdoor showers add to the unique island experience. Each individual room was designed with a specific intention that is shared with guests to maximize their time at the resort. Guests will also enjoy relaxing on private terraces and balconies that allow them to soak in as much of what Mother Nature has to offer from the beautiful BVI. THE BRITISH VIRGIN Islands has frequently been described as a ‘billionaires playground’, and with good reason. We do appear to have more than our fair share of luxury resorts, high-end villas and exclusive private island hideaways - given our relatively small size. Visitors enjoy the understated elegance of our resorts and the unpretentious style. The Territory is known for an exceptionally luxe tourist experience making it a bucket-list Caribbean destination for many. “The British Virgin Islands is a destination known for its range of offerings that strike the delicate balance between simplicity and elegant luxury. From accommodations with outstanding architectural features found in unique locations throughout our archipelago, to luxury crewed sail and motor yachts that ply our waters, the British Virgin Islands has many options for high-net-worth visitors to experience. Luxe lifestyle is at the core of our marketing strategy as our guests are encouraged to explore as many islands and indulge in as many experiences as their itineraries would allow. These are also the guests that have remained loyal and have continued to visit the BVI in defiance of the current world situation.” - Clive McCoy, BVI Director of Tourism

Whether you dream of arriving by helicopter to a private island escape or speeding across azure waters for a bite to eat and a glass of rosé at an exclusive resort, Virgin Gorda provides some of the most impressive luxury options in the Caribbean. And when many think of BVI sailing, you may think of bareboat charters and beaches, but what about luxury yachts? A recent BBC article on luxury describes it as “Luxury has evolved beyond people, places and things in ways that fill our lives with fascination, pleasure and meaning.” This updated definition of luxury, moving away from what we understand as glitz and glamour, offers a new focus on how good that luxurious thing or experience makes us feel. This feeling is exactly what makes guests choose luxury yachts,

according to both Sarah Jones of Voyage Charters and Kayleigh Starkey of Horizon Yacht Charters.

VOYAGE Charters

The VOYAGE slogan is: “Your vacation, your yacht, your voyage.” “The BVI is ideal for luxury yachting, well set-up and very attractive to high-end clients. Yes, certain aspects are challenging, but it’s part of the charm of being here,” says Sarah Jones, Marketing and Crew Manager for VOYAGE charters. Jones describes VOYAGE as providing excellence from stem to stern. A professional luxury charter company with a highly qualified team means that much of the

luxury experience is attributed to the company’s superior service and how VOYAGE maintains a very high standard for the upkeep of the yachts. She also says that VOYAGE has maintained a specific fleet size so that clients can experience a personal touch, stating: “Our intention is to continue offering excellence within a more boutique company style. We believe that VOYAGE is an outstanding brand and we always endeavour to deliver our slogan each and every time: Your Vacation. Your Yacht. Your VOYAGE.” VOYAGE Charters is based out of the beautiful BVI destination of Soper’s Hole on Tortola. Currently, there is much excitement as the company is celebrating 25 years of operation! Sarah is the daughter of the company’s founders and directors Robin and Jo-Ann Downing. The couple moved from South Africa to the BVI with one VOYAGE boat. All VOYAGE yachts are designed and manufactured by the VOYAGE Yacht Factory in South Africa. On completion of each yacht, their delivery captain sails the yacht across the Atlantic all the way to the BVI, which normally takes between 35 and 40 days. The boats are owned by private investors who equally love the lifestyle and the whole VOYAGE team. Sarah came to BVI in 1996 and now works in the family business with her husband, the Yacht Sales Manager; her older brother the Base Manager and sister-in-law, Charter Coordinator, as well as many long-serving employees. The team of 40 employees, Sarah says, is just like our own family.

Why choose VOYAGE? According to Jones, “Our attention to detail in the charter industry is unmatched. The luxury is in all the details, down to the bed linens. This is not just a job, this is our family’s legacy, so we take it very seriously.”

VOYAGE clients arrive as friends and leave as family. They become like family because the company offers warm, friendly service that develops into a great relationship. Many guests have been chartering with VOYAGE for over 20 years with one client enjoying his VOYAGE Yacht since 1997. The brand has a strong repeat client base with very loyal clients. In fact, so loyal that after the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, one client told Jones: “If you have a raft, we will come charter with you.” Before the hurricanes, the fleet was 30, but currently stands 17 strong with many more luxury yachts joining the fleet in 2021 and 2022. Because every single boat was damaged, some VOYAGE owners purchased new yachts. Fortunately, VOYAGE was able to repair more than 12 vessels at their adjacent West End Boatyard. Unfortunately, the hurricane recovery for the luxury yachts, and many other industries, was interrupted by COVID-19. Jones says that while the situation is “extremely trying”, there is still lots of hope and excitement for the future. Not only did VOYAGE manage to keep all its employees, the reservations team in the USA are working hard with the many enquiries and bookings now coming in. “People are so looking forward to getting to the British Virgin Islands because there are still so many things to do, see and enjoy while sailing on Your luxury VOYAGE yacht,” said Jones. This is especially true due to the quarantine or what Jones calls the ‘Q-days’. BVI’s current protocols for all visitors involve a negative COVID-19 test three to five days before travelling, then another test upon arrival, then guests proceed to their four-day quarantine aboard the vessel. After four days, once they receive a negative test result, guests are cleared to leave the vessel and

move around the Territory freely. Jones assures the process is smooth and is only getting better with time. She says that the VOYAGE full-time concierge, Nicola, helps guests in planning new experiences in BVI, of which there are many. VOYAGE guests (and crew who will join the ‘safety bubble’) spend Q-days on one of the fully equipped yachts, visiting anchorages that are less frequented, having fun at water activities like snorkelling and diving, and eating gourmet meals made by Michelin Chef Kenetha Ashton. If you are on a crewed charter, you really don’t need to go ashore. Everything is on board. Jones assures that guests will be in a safe environment, the crew is regularly tested, continue to wear personal protective equipment, and practice social distancing; which is all very possible on vessels like the 590, a large, luxury yacht which she says “guests will never feel crowded on”. The 59’ yacht has a fly-bridge, aft and forward cockpits, seven refrigerators, six spacious identical walk-around cabins for up to 12 guests and two en-suite crew cabins, along with a galley with two dishwashers, an induction stove, AC, and electric ovens. One special feature is the electric VOYAGE window made by Lewmar, designed especially for the 590. The window is lifted by a switch to let air into the galley. Some of the 59’ are electric catamarans. Jones proudly explained that VOYAGE is the first to introduce an electric charter boat to the BVI luxury yacht industry, the “Electrified 48”. Aside from the engine being super quiet, Jones says electric yachts are

the future of the industry, adding, “Minimising our footprint with this new technology is a wonderful thing. The industry will change and move in that direction. We’re not afraid of cutting that path. When we first came to BVI, we were the first to charter catamarans at a time when it was mainly monohulls. We are used to paving the way.” VOYAGE currently has six more 590s on the way. Some are electric, and some are hybrid with diesel engines and a battery system. The boat was designed and built specifically for luxury charter in the BVI. The smallest VOYAGE charter boat is 48’ and has four cabins plus two V-Berths, which can be used for crew or kids bunks. They also have 50-, 52- and 58-foot vessels. Jones is very optimistic about the future and advises guests to book their luxury yacht now, adding, “We are preparing for a much brighter future. When things change, the flood gates are going to open. Now is a good time to come to the BVI, because things will be busy soon.”

Horizon Yacht Charters

“Start at Amazing” is the Horizon slogan. Kayleigh Starkey, Horizon’s Luxury All-inclusive Charter Broker, says the British Virgin Islands is ideal for luxury charters. “The BVI has everything you could possibly want out of a luxury vacation. The beaches are stunning, sailing is magnificent, and we have a very high standard of provisioning services on offer,” says Starkey. “It’s also the people and the service that guests come back for, year after year...

few yachts in 1998 at Nanny Cay on Tortola. Starkey’s mother, Sylvia Driver and business partner, Andrew Thompson are the company’s directors who both have many years in the industry and Starkey’s husband is the Yacht Sales Director. The company’s home base is in BVI, with other bases in St. Vincent and Grenada. Horizon offers luxury yacht charters throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas too.

The personalized service and seamless flow, in addition to having a team in the BVI who can relate to what’s happening on the ground, compared to others whose customer service representatives are based elsewhere. Many of the employees have been with the company for 10 to 15 years and love sailing and the beautiful islands with a passion. “We are a family business, which means that repeat guests see the same faces every year. People connect with that,” Starkey said. Kayleigh says that the luxury division has been around for 10 years The division evolved as a response to guests requesting an all-inclusive service, not only with a captain and a chef but with high-quality vessels and professional crew. The broker explains that more often than not, the crew aboard luxury yachts have worked their way from smaller bareboats, up to high-end yachts. The chefs are trained to fivestar gourmet level, and the captains are always professional and highly certified. All crew are friendly and efficient and will go the extra mile to provide the best vacation experience to their guests that they can. “This is the way people want to charter nowadays. If you afford this high-end luxury, you get amazing quality,” Starkey said. The Horizon fleet now comprises 50 yachts, with several luxury yachts recently added. One such luxury yacht, Angel Eyes, popular for not only the elegant decor and attentive crew, but also the angel wings which guests wear to take pictures “for the gram”! As a broker, Strakey advises potential guests on every aspect of their vacation. Born in BVI, she’s very knowledgeable about sailing and onisland activities. When guests make an inquiry, Starkey sends them an online brochure which includes testimonials, crew bios, yacht specifications, photographs and sample menus.

To ensure the right fit, she curates charters while considering guests’ needs along with the personalities and profile of the crew. She can also arrange for a ‘blended meal option’ for guests who wish to have both the on-board chef’s meals, with some online dining, along with villa rentals if guests wish to explore either before or after the charter. All menus are tailored to the guests’ dietary requirements, so this type of vacation is perfect for someone with special food needs. Guests tend to fly into the nearby USVI and charter over to the BVI. Horizon has partnered with a private jet company for persons who wish to have a direct flight to BVI via San Juan to “travel in the same bubble”. “You wake up, coffee’s brewing; the crew has continental breakfast there for you, with an option for a nice hot breakfast once everyone is up and ready. Then you move on to

your first stop for the day - maybe some snorkelling, then pull into the next anchorage in time for lunch. After lunch, you may go to another anchorage and play with the water sports toys available on the yacht, and then have some sundowner cocktails. Dinner is always a three-course gourmet meal with dessert and after-dinner drinks. It’s your charter, you get exactly what you require,” explains Starkey, describing what a typical day on the ocean with an allinclusive luxury yacht looks like. While COVID-19 has impacted charters, Horizon has inquiries are steadily coming in for late 2021 and bookings in 2022. They are seeing a similar response for pent up demand as the BVI has a loyal following of repeat guests. Starkey has also seen new people coming in every year, which makes her proud as a BVIslander. Horizon has been offering special

“bareboat” packages and discounts to further encourage bookings. One such package allows for persons to work remotely from your yacht for a month, while the kids can do their online learning. Another package is the Learn To Sail where you can gain your ASA certification with an instructor on one of their bareboat yachts, where clients gain knowledge and experience while enjoying the awesome sailing offered in BVI. Horizon also believes now is the perfect time to book a luxury charter in the BVI. “You have everything you can possibly need on the boat. All crewed yachts have fantastic watersports on board, some with snorkelling and diving equipment, others with Hobie cats and kiteboarding,” Starkey Said. “People who are travelling to the BVI are having the time of their lives and are booking for next year too!” ■

PREP TIME: 10 MIN COOKING TIME: 40 MIN D I F F I C U LT Y: M E D I U M C A N N OT B E F R OZ E N INGREDIENTS: 2 cups fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 scallion, chopped 1 celery stalk, finely diced 2 tablespoons baby capers, rinsed 1 teaspoon lemon zest, finely grated 2 tablespoons Pernod, or other Absinthe-style liqueur, divided 1 cup sourdough breadcrumbs 2 bacon slices, finely chopped 24 fresh rock oysters 2 /3 cup butter, at room temperature, cubed and divided kosher salt freshly ground black pepper METHOD: Blanch the parsley in a saucepan of salted boiling water until bright green, about 10 seconds. Drain and refresh in a bowl of ice water. Drain and place the parsley in a food processor. Add the scallion, celery, capers, and lemon zest; pulse until finely chopped. Add 1 tablespoon Pernod and some salt and pepper to taste, pulsing a few times. Preheat the oven to 475°F. Line two baking sheets with pieces of

crumpled aluminum foil. (This allows the oysters to sit flat. ) In a bowl, stir together the breadcrumbs and chopped bacon. Set aside. Carefully shuck the oysters with a shucking knife; hold the oyster wrapped in a towel in one hand, and slide the tip of the knife into the hinge of the oyster, located at the thin end where the top and bottom shell meet. Once the tip of the knife is in the oyster, wiggle the knife back along the length of the shell to sever the adductor muscle that is attached to the top shell, opening up the oyster. Carefully scrape the oyster meat onto a tray lined with paper towels; reserve half the shells. Spoon the parsley mixture into the reserved shells and return the oyster meat on top. Top with the breadcrumb mixture; dot with butter. Place the oysters on the foil on the sheets. Transfer the baking sheets to the oven and bake the oysters until golden brown and bubbling, 10-15 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the remaining butter with the remaining Pernod in a small saucepan. To serve, spoon the melted butter mixture over the oysters.
