Over the years, it appears like the BVI High Season has expanded and while some would mark its conclusion at the end of April, it’s arguable that a new date might be stapled somewhere in July/August very soon. Many charter companies and restaurants reported a consistent flow of business till mid-summer for the 2013/2014 High Season and some even surpassed that time. Nevertheless, it cannot be disputed that November is its official inception point supported by the influx of snowbirds, the rise in cruise ship visits, and the evolution of the islands’ liveliness from a quiet buzz to widespread frivolity. The emergence of many events synchronises with High Season’s launch – two very popular examples are the Charter Yacht Society’s BVI Boat Show 6 Nov – 9 Nov, and the globally renowned Movember; a month of charitable activity with a focal point on men the world over, growing whacky moustaches to fund treatment, research, and awareness of prostate cancer, and men’s health. The BVI’s popular End of Movember Party and Prizegiving at Nanny Cay beach on Sunday, November 30 has become a stamp mark in the BVI event Calendar. With the arrival of the holiday season, our BVI HomeSense column explores reasons why visitors should choose a villa rental in the Caribbean as their soothing retreat. There was a time when the only way you could come and cruise the Caribbean was to learn to sail,
learn to navigate, buy a boat capable of offshore passage making, prepare yourself and your family, then make a long ocean trip to arrive in the Caribbean; this time wasn’t long ago. Now, being a yacht broker myself, I would prefer if this was still the case, but there are other options today. When it became possible to travel by air to the Caribbean at a reasonable cost, and enjoy a sailing holiday on a yacht, a new opportunity emerged and led the way to the huge bareboat charter industry in place today with the BVI at the centre of it all. While enjoying a vacation on a crewed charter yacht can be pleasant, for many sailors, the allure of independence in commanding your own vessel might steer you away from falling under the guidance of another captain sailing his way. Following are five reasons to consider bare-boating for your next Holiday in the BVI.

You are the captain of your ship When you spend months in advance of your BVI charter, actively avoiding any real work by cruising the internet and Google Earth, looking for great bars, new restaurants, dive spots, and anchorages, plotting your path, you get far more out of the vacation. In this, being the captain has great benefits such as not having to stick to the agenda that you took weeks to plan; being able to change your mind at a whim or a wind shift is what sailing is all about. You might meet some other ‘cruisers’ at the bar and hear about a great snorkel spot – just go there instead with the luxury of doing things your way. When you are in full control of the vessel and crew, everything you do is all through your skills, your mistakes and your accomplishments. There is a lot of growth a couple or family can experience in making a plan, operating a complex boat, and getting it fast and safe from point A to point B. The bonds made between family and partners in doing this will last a lifetime.
Low cost relative to ownership If you are only able to get away from the real world—mortgages, credit payments, school and work schedules, dentist visits and club commitments—for only a week or two a year, then owning a boat in the BVI is very expensive relative to the use you get. Our research shows that it takes 8-13 weeks a year of use to make a purchase smarter than a charter, financially speaking.
Obscure anchorages all to yourself for pure peace As crowded as the BVI might seem when you visit anchorages like Cane Garden Bay, The Bight, North Sound or Trellis Bay, you can also find many secluded gems. When you run your own bare boat, you have the opportunity to discover some ‘off the beaten path’ cove to anchor in for the night all to yourself – and they don’t call the BVI Natures Little Secrets for nothing. There are many of these hidden hotspots where there is no one running noisy generators, no screaming kids on the boat next door, no ‘whooo-hooo-ing’ American girls at the bar. Just pure peace and the beauty of nature with no one else around.
Sailing Naked Of course this is the most beneficial reason to charter your boat in a Bare Boat format – no captain, no crew, no boat payment or yard bills; you can really cut loose and let go. Sailing pure and naked in the Caribbean sun is about the happiest place any sailor could find themselves and not having to worry about anything at all except where to find the next rum drink or hiking trail.
Yelling at your crew This point depends on your perspective on yelling, but better to be doing it than on the receiving end and as captain, you are the one that gets to yell at your crew. Personifying the epitome of luxury,
Yacht Spotlight casts its gaze on Kings Ransom (KR); a crewed charter vessel of prestigious standing, named after the prime position in royalty due to its promise of a regal experience for its guests. The crew, formed by Captain Pete Clapp, Chef Niki Payne, First Mate Daniel Asmus, and Stewardess Martina Walla, adhere to the ethos of providing a grandiose service aboard their Silhouette 76. Built by Matrix Yachts, with Peter Werhley responsible for naval architecture, interior and exterior design, the boat boasts a contemporary feel and comfortably accommodates 10 guests alongside the four crew members. BVI’s Nanny Cay or Village Cay are the docks where KR finds amenities suited to her preferences, though a favoured anchor spot would be the beauty of Little Bay. Having previously chartered in Croatia where she plans to return for the summer of 2015, KR arrived in the BVI in 2008 and has returned to the Mediterranean twice since. She is the youngest and newest of the Silhouettes here and due to her impressive size with a beam at almost 40ft, she stands as one of wider cats. f you ever are in the company of two or more BVI senior citizens and the topic of conversation is traditional wooden sloops, the subject of which was the fastest vessel will invariably emerge. So which boat was the fastest? The answer depends on who you are talking with and where they are from. People are very passionate about this subject and very loyal to their home village. Folks from the North Shore will say the Dixie or the Consolation. In East End and Parham Town, it could be the Pilgrim, the Cedar Branch or the Lady D. In Sea Cow’s Bay, the Florena or the Olive, known as the flag boat. In West End, it would be the Flame. For well over 100 years, the Virgin Islands were the primary supplier of beef to St Thomas. Along with Beef, we carried other livestock, ground provisions, and charcoal. They exchanged these products in Charlotte Amalie for the supplies they needed to live. Once a week was Shipping Day in Road Town – sloops would load up at the Jetty in Road Harbour and sail to West End where they would meet other Sloops from the North Shore and Anegada. They would ‘clear out’ (clear customs) and sail together for Charlotte Amalie. Whoever reached first would have the advantage of selling their products ahead of the others. The competition was fierce and a fast boat was definitely an asset.

Once business was concluded, it was another challenge to see who could sail back to West End and ‘Clear In’ before the others and then sail on to their home village. The route they took was identical to that used by our ferry boats today and the section between West End and Red Hook in St Thomas was known as ‘The Ghut.’ This is how sloop racing began and it eventually found its way into our annual Festival celebrations as a popular event held on August Tuesday. Now in this story, I would like to deal with a sloop called the Lady D and a race against the Consolation and the Dixie, which took place in the 1940’s. The Lady D was built in East End (Red Bay to be exact) by expert Shipwright Haldane Davies. I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Davies before he passed away and one of the many things he shared with me was the story of this sloop. Haldane said that the Lady D was the fastest boat ever built in the Virgin Islands. Of course he built her so his opinion might be a little biased. She was however, a very, very swift boat. Haldane said that Father God had guided his hands when he built her and that her lines below the waterline were different from any other boat that he built.
“She would get up and fly,” he said and she could out reach and out point any sloop in her day. It wasn’t long before word of this fast East End sloop began to spread to the other communities. One day in the 1940’s, the Lady D was clearing out of West End with the other sloops bound for Charlotte Amalie. As she cleared customs, she met two Cane Garden Bay boats, which had purposely waited for her. They were the Dixie, Louis Callwood’s boat and the Consolation belonging to Sonny Henly and made famous in the ballad of Ella Gift with the rum hidden in her pantalets. The race began but as they passed Great Thatch and headed into the Ghut, the wind became light and it favoured the other boats. Haldane was on board the Lady D and at the helm was his cousin Adolphus Penn. As the Dixie and the Consolation forged ahead, in the light airs Haldane settled in for a nap. When he awoke, the wind had increased and they were at the other end of the Ghut. He looked ahead to see how far the two boats had gotten, but could see nothing. He asked Adolphus where they were and was told to look behind them. Far in the distance were the other boats and as they reached the rocks known as the Cow and the Calf, they made their turn to head towards Charlotte Amalie. The race didn’t end here, for when it was time to go back, Sonny Henly and Louis Callwood said that the real test is going into the wind and that would determine whose sloop was fastest.
This time they were joined by a St John boat and all four left together. Lady D was in her element and she could out point any other sloop when heading into the wind. She got below the other boats and never looked back. Haldane said that they reached West End, cleared Customs and were on their way east before you could see a tiny speck of the others in the distance. Lady D went on to win many more races and confrontations. She was known and respected throughout the Territory and soon her reputation spread in the region. It is sad to say that it was her speed which led to her demise. Sometime in the early 1950’s, a group of men from down island showed up at Haldane’s door inquiring after the sloop they had heard was so fast. They made him an offer he couldn’t refuse and were soon heading south towards Anguilla. In those days, travel between the Virgin Islands and St Martin was made by way of the Anegada Passage from North Sound. A boat would leave at sunset and reach Anguilla by first light. It is still done that way today no matter which direction you are going; only today we use the Round Rock passage on the other side of Virgin Gorda. It was dark and the new owners settled in for a long night of sailing. It is not known if they all went to sleep or if the man at the tiller wasn’t paying attention, but the Lady D was so fast that at 1am she ran full speed onto the reef in Anguilla, broke up and was a complete loss. Haldane tried to build another one like her in his construction of the Lady May. The vessel was fast but nothing to compare to the Lady D; perhaps the fastest sloop ever built in these parts.

If you have not already heard or you are visiting the BVI for the first time, VISAR is a voluntary organisation
constructed for the purpose of saving life at sea. Perceived by the BVI community as the protectors of any individual undertaking activity in our waters, they are a fundamental cog in the Territory’s infrastructure. In late September, the VISAR Tortola Base held their annual general
meeting – one of the central purposes of the gathering was to elect new members for their team. Alongside VISAR President Gerard Kraakman’s announcements, including the team’s many fundraising successes over 2014, the new board members voted in were Dave Allen, Nigel Keegan, and Nick Cunha. Hailing from diverse backgrounds, Dave Allen is functioning as the Tortola Action Representative, Nigel Keegan is heading Fundraising, and Nick Cunha is their Public Relations Representative. VISAR continues to power forward with its eternal efforts and is always seeking further support to improve their service to the community.

1 lb chicken, seasoned to taste, cooked, chopped, chilled 3 stalks celery, finely diced 1/2 medium red onion, finely diced 1 green apple, finely diced Handful fresh tarragon, finely diced 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup spicy brown mustard 1 healthy TBSP Madras curry powder Salt and pepper Hot sauce for more spice Fresh pita bread, cut in half, pocket opened Dried cranberries
2 lb fresh lump crab meat 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 tbsp spicy brown mustard 1 tbsp favorite hot sauce 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 6 slices French bread, buttered, toasted to crispy texture, finely chopped in food processor 1 tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup shredded carrots 1/4 cup finely diced celery 1/4 cup finely diced yellow onion 4 cloves fresh garlic, finely minced 1/4 cup white wine Salt and pepper to taste Handful parsley, finely diced 4 green scallions, finely diced 1 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup ketchup 1 tsp habañero chilli powder Juice from 1/4 lemon In a large mixing bowl, combine crab meat, mayonnaise, spicy brown mustard, hot sauce, lemon juice, and toasted French bread. In a pan, sautée carrots, celery, onion, and garlic until celery is tender. Deglaze pan with white wine, cook down until wine is reduced. Add to crab mixture, as well as parsley, salt and pepper. Mix well. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and form individual crab cakes, about 1/3 cup each. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°F or until golden brown. In a small mixing bowl, combine mayonnaise, ketchup, scallions, chilli powder, and lemon juice. Serve crab cakes with your favourite fresh pasta salad blend, topping with Habañero Remoulade sauce.

2 lb red potatoes, washed, diced into 1-inch pieces, boiled to fork-tender doneness, chilled 1 small yellow onion, finely diced 3 stalks celery, finely diced 4 scallion stalks, finely diced 1/2 red bell pepper, finely diced Handful fresh dill, finely diced 4 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and finely diced 1/2 cup fried bacon, finely diced 1/2 cup crumbled bleu cheese (more if you love bleu cheese!) 1 cup puréed cottage cheese 1/4 cup spicy brown mustard 1 tbsp raw honey Salt and pepper Hot sauce for more spice In a large mixing bowl, combine chicken, celery, red onion, green apple, tarragon, mayonnaise, and spicy brown mustard. Add hot sauce and salt and pepper to taste. Add more mustard for a creamier texture if desired. Chill in refrigerator. In another bowl, combine cooked potatoes, yellow onion, celery, scallions, red bell pepper, fresh dill, hard-boiled eggs, bacon, bleu cheese, puréed cottage cheese, spicy brown mustard, and honey. Season with salt and pepper and hot sauce to taste. For a creamier texture, add more puréed cottage cheese or spicy brown mustard. Serve chicken salad in a fresh pita with dried cranberries, fresh lettuce and tomatoes, alongside the potato salad.
6-8 filets fresh Mahi Mahi Cajun seasoning Olive oil 1 small yellow onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, finely diced 1 medium carrot, shredded 1 red bell pepper, diced 2 spicy andouille sausages, removed from casing 1 tsp cumin 1 tbsp hot sauce (or more!) 3.5 cups chicken stock 2 cups brown rice Salt and pepper 3 stalks scallions, chopped 1 fresh pineapple, cored, finely diced 2 shallots, finely diced 1 red jalapeño, finely diced 1 green jalapeños, finally diced Handful fresh cilantro, diced 1 tbsp olive oil 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar 1 tbsp cream of coconut 1 tsp Red chili powder Salt and pepper 1 tbsp coconut oil 30 oz Fresh coconut milk 20 oz Chicken stock 1 oz fresh ginger, peeled and sliced 4 cloves fresh garlic, smashed and roughly chopped 1 lime, cut in half, juiced 1 oz birds eye chilli peppers Heaping spoonful Red Thai curry paste 4 fresh stalks lemongrass 1 tbsp Turbinado sugar Sea salt 8 oz chicken breast, sliced 8 oz fresh white mushrooms, sliced 1 medium red onion, sliced into large pieces 4 green scallions, roughly chopped Fresh cilantro, roughly chopped 4 oz fresh bean sprouts Chilli oil
In a shallow pan, season the Mahi Mahi with Cajun seasoning and a drizzle of olive oil, let marinate. In a large saucepan, sautée yellow onion, garlic, carrot, bell pepper, Andouille sausage, and cumin until sausage is fully cooked and broken up into little pieces. Add hot sauce, chicken stock, and brown rice. Bring to a boil, stirring often, and reduce heat. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and cook for about 45 minutes or until fork-tender, stirring often. Toss in scallions. Set aside for serving. In a large mixing bowl, combine pineapple, red onion, red bell pepper, fresh jalapeño, cilantro, olive oil, balsamic, cream of coconut, and red chilli powder. Salt and pepper to taste. Stir often to incorporate flavours. Heat oven to 325°F. On a parchment-paper-lined cooking sheet, place Mahi Mahi. Bake for 20 minutes, or until meat is just cooked, and then broil for 5 minutes or until lightly golden brown on top. On your desired plates, fill a plating ring with the Dirty Rice. Place Mahi Mahi next to rice and top fish with pineapple salsa. Garnish with a slice of lime and fresh cilantro.
In a large pot, combine coconut oil, coconut milk, chicken stock, ginger, garlic, lime juice and limes, birds eye chilli peppers, curry paste, and lemongrass. Bring to a boil and remove limes. Set on low heat and let ‘steep’ for 30 minutes. Strain liquids into a fresh pot. Add small amounts of Turbinado sugar and salt to taste. Add in chicken breast and mushrooms and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and cover. 10 minutes before serving add in red onion and scallions. Garnish with cilantro, fresh bean sprouts, and chilli oil (for added spice and colour). www.bvipropertyyacht.com

! s u n o B 1 oz fresh lime juice 2 oz mint-infused simple syrup (ingredients below) 3 oz dark rum 4 oz cucumber-infused water (ingredients below) In a sauce pan, combine 1/4 cup turbinado sugar, 1 cup water, and a handful of fresh mint leaves. Bring to a boil and let simmer for 5 minutes until sugar is well-dissolved. Chill in refrigerator and strain out mint before using. In a pitcher filled with fresh water, drop in sliced cucumbers, let steep and chill in refrigerator and strain out cucumbers before serving. In a martini shaker, combine lime juice, mint-infused simple syrup, dark rum, and cucumber infused water. Shake with ice. Serve in rocks glasses filled with crushed ice, and garnish with a slice of lime and fresh mint.
8 oz semi-sweet chocolate 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup butter 1 cup pumpkin purée 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp fresh-grated nutmeg 1/4 tsp clove 4 eggs, separated 8 oz white chocolate 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream 8 oz cream cheese 1/2 cup confectioners sugar 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste Cocoa powder Fresh mint In a double boiler, melt chocolate, brown sugar, and butter. In a mixing bowl, combine pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and egg yolks. Slowly temper in melted chocolate mixture and whip until smooth. In a separate mixing bowl, whip egg whites to stiff peaks; fold lightly into chocolate-pumpkin mixture. Pour into spring form pan and bake at 325°F for 45 minutes in a water bath. Let cake cool to room temperature and then chill in a refrigerator for at least 6 hours. In a double boiler, melt white chocolate and heavy whipping cream. In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream cheese, confectioners’ sugar, and vanilla bean paste, then combine with melted white chocolate. Slice cake into 8 equal pieces; dust plate with cocoa powder; place a heaping spoonful of white chocolate ganache on the plate’s edge and swipe to make an elongated garnish. Place cake in the middle of the plate and add a final garnish of fresh mint.

BVI MOVEMBER REVISES THE CALENDAR

overzealous editor, Virgin Islands Property & Yacht has mistakenly published this issue as the November issue. Those of us in the BVI know that the month has been renamed ‘Movember’ in support of the BVI Movember Charitable Trust’s efforts to fund treatment, research, and awareness of prostate cancer, and men’s health. Prostate cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in men, and it is also one of the most treatable once detected. African-Caribbean men have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world. Part of the reason why African-Caribbean men have such a high rate of prostate cancer is due to the lack of education about early detection as well as fear and embarrassment associated with prostate cancer screening methods. One of the goals of BVI Movember is to educate the men of the Territory in order to dispel those concerns. Additionally, the charity provides funds to assist men who are suffering from prostate or testicular cancer. Lastly, the Trust donates a portion of the funds raised to the Medical Research Council in the UK, with the donation specifically earmarked for prostate cancer research.
BVI Movember is a month-long event that starts with registration of clean-shaven men on Saturday, November 1 at The Dove Restaurant. The event continues with the participants growing moustaches, conversing about the cause, and raising sponsorship money throughout the month—bolstered by a few mid-month activities, including the On the Rocks Bar Crawl in Virgin Gorda on November 15. It then concludes with the End of Movember Party and Prizegiving at Nanny Cay Beach on Sunday, November 30 when men compete in several moustacherelated categories. The first BVI Movember took place in 2007, and the event has grown each year with the final party now one of the most preeminent events on the BVI social calendar. Additionally, the Trust reached last year’s target of raising $1 per capita of the BVI which is a significant milestone and an indication of the success of the charity. Business aside, Movember is also a fun, irreverent way to raise money and awareness (as well as some handsome facial hair). Last year, Justice Bannister of the BVI Commercial Court issued a statement that he had no objections to BVI Movember participants (and their moustaches) “attending Court or Chambers during work in progress…provided that the results do not exceed what is www.bvipropertyyacht.com

ordinarily socially acceptable.” This was a coup for the charity who often heard from lawyers in the Territory who wanted to participate but did not feel that their moustaches would always be well received. As part of an effort to promote health and wellness through exercise, the theme of this year’s End of Movember Party is BVI Molympics. Participants and attendees are encouraged to dress up in athletic gear or as famous moustache-sporting athletes to compete for one of the many moustache categories, including the prestigious title of Mr. Movember. Last year’s Mr. Movember, Bertrum Lettsome (DJ Birch) took his title very seriously. He has spent the year promoting prostate cancer awareness through social media, radio show appearances, discussions on his own radio programme, and is planning a TV interview before the end of the year. He believes it is important for men to get checked. “We rarely ever go to the doctor even unless it’s extremely serious,” he said. He also mentioned the procedure and how “most men wouldn’t want to get it done,” but he encourages men to “get checked or encourage your love ones to get checked.” He also added an important item, the fact that BVI Movember Charitable Trust has money to give to men in the Territory who are living with this disease. Through a very simple and straightforward application process, residents in the Territory who have been diagnosed with prostate or testicular cancer can receive funds to assist in treatment, travel, or other expenses. They simply need to contact bvimovember@gmail.com. BVI Movember forgives this publication for the use of the month’s former, out-dated name. As the charity continues to take over the penultimate month of the year, they might petition to have the name officially changed.

Smith It is rare when an individual knows exactly what they want to do in life. Further, it is more unique when that person is able to fulfil that specific desire. When talking to Artists’ Corner’s latest interviewee Desirée Smith, she described the roots of her artistry as a calling rather than stemming from a particular inspirational event or concept. “My earliest memory is of lying on the floor drawing and making artistic discoveries,” she said. “Creating visual art is my most natural inclination – I was born for this.” Commencing her vocation at this early age where memories first manifest, BVI born Desirée has been an artist all her life. She opted for the discipline of Fine Art with a Pop Art aesthetic while also specialising as a graphic designer. “Pop Art is a style of art that makes reference to recognisable aspects of popular culture, such as people, music, [and] brands,” Desirée explained. “These popular culture references are then often times addressed outside of their usual context and presented in a visually stimulating, new, and interesting way.” www.bvipropertyyacht.com

Desirée further elaborated on her attraction to this mode of art, relaying that it allows her to incorporate her graphic design skills in the creation of her pieces, and fully articulate her perceptions on contemporary pop culture. “The expressions in Pop Art that I choose to make are due to my great affinity for the current mode of popular culture,” she said. “It allows me to make serious commentary and even be humorous about things that are of the moment…I do so in a way that is vibrant, engaging and visually appealing.”

The artist observed her automatic allure to art in the primary and secondary school segments of her life. The institutions nurtured her innate interest, assisted the development of her skills, and encouraged her to take art as her profession: “As such, I furthered my studies at the American InterContinental University and obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication with a concentration in Graphic Design,” she commented on the specifics of her tutoring. With a strong presence on social media, permitting her to broadcast her work further afield, she said, “I have had the privilege to make connections with others that show appreciation for my artwork from places such as Singapore, Ukraine and various parts of the United States.” With her extended connections and talent for networking, she is proud that she was able to exhibit her work in the BVI London Office in 2012 during the Olympics and again in 2013. As an auxiliary confidence boost, she sold two of her pieces in London in 2012. In August of this year, she held her first solo art exhibit at Road Town’s cultural restaurant and popular nightspot Bamboushay – a very busy affair which drew people from a diverse range of backgrounds. She has also presented her works jointly with other BVI artists from the cultural forum that the Territory promotes. In continuation of exploring and sharing her passion, she said her ambition is, “To always create works of art that bring beauty and awareness to the world.”

TAKING MY FIRST SAFARI TO

In the Virgin Islands, there are a lot of ‘first-time’ scenarios.
On the wholesome side, it might be the first time you sail, snorkel, dive, kiteboard, paddleboard, or simply lie on a beach enjoying the multitude of colours in a magnificent sunset. On the more wild front, it could be your ‘virgin experience’ hitting the Caribbean cocktail scene – the alcohol measures in this tropical paradise are often what bartenders call ‘free pour’, which effectively means you get a lot more value than you bargained for. This can end with interesting consequences; like when you’re in a bar drinking up heartily with your friends and you return from the restroom to order yet another Painkiller. Five minutes pass. Perhaps even ten. You look down only to find that you forgot to pull your trousers and boxers up when you left the toilet. This is not a confession. The specific ‘first time’ I speak of, is actually a series of events that occurred in a single excursion in September: It was my first time visiting ‘the drowned island’ or the name it is known by, Anegada. It was also my first time riding the RIB Safari— a new activity offered by Caribbean Images Tours that will see guests escorted over to Anegada with a grand tour of the Island. On top of this, were a multitude of other novel experiences – seeing the strange geographical settlement of Anegada, catching the sight of a speedy eagle ray, viewing a graceful shark live in the wild and not behind several inches of glass, observing the variety of colours of the Anegada reef, staying at the tranquil and luxurious Anegada Beach Club, and of course, hanging out with a vast group of die-hard Jack Reacher fans (I must stress, fans of the books not the film).
It must have been approximately 11 of us that made our way across to Anegada on that phenomenal day. I was excited because like I have repeated on so many occasions, each BVI is vastly different. No exaggeration. I had heard much about Anegada, which I have considered ‘the forgotten isle’ as it is often ignored. I’ve known of people born in the BVI, who have not made the trip – I would declare that this as a huge misfortune after visiting the island. Our two RIBS sped across the water from Tortola as we discussed the enigmatic fact that Anegada is invisible until you grow extremely close to the location. It was literally like an aspect out of the famous novel The Northern Lights when I first saw the island appear; a world materialising out of nothing as we approached. colours in the water was astonishing as the RIB bounced across the water. Reaching the East End of the island, I was amazed by the large piles of conch shells, some even forming islands – from a distance, it looked like an eerie homage to an Indiana Jones film. Now, it could have been great luck or the fact that Anegada is known for its abundance of wildlife, but the first thing we saw was a shark –I know what you might think, but this isn’t Jaws and from the collective knowledge of the people that surrounded me, the power of Hollywood films has really muddled perceptions of the marine world. Suffice to say, you are perfectly safe and it is a fantastic sight. At another flick of the head, there was the jet-fast gliding of an Eagle Ray, darting through the water. Unfortunately, I missed its famed jump out of the sea, but the screams of amazement from the others was sufficient proof that it had occurred. By the time we reached Anegada Beach Club, we were all excited but it was not anticipated that everything about this retreat would surpass expectations. great and it was literally a weekend getaway where we all relaxed. No excursions, no exercise. Just resting by the pool, great beverages, and fantastic food – I consumed one of their gigantic pizzas for dinner, that also served as breakfast. I believe one of my favourite moments was when I got a call on my room phone the following morning from Simon Wood, one of the partners involved with RIB Safari. “It’s time to go?” I said. “Nope,” he said. “Everybody is staying for another night and you are too.” The spontaneity was welcome as Anegada Beach Club is a very pleasant experience as is travelling and relaxing on this unique island.
