Just above the beach you can still see the home of some of the island’s original inhabitants. Sea salt from the island’s pond can assist in keeping your skin healthy. I love visiting the island and taking a salt scrub, it makes your skin feel incredibly soft, once you’ve had a swim to wash it all off! I’ve travelled through the Caribbean and the Pacific islands, and something that makes the BVI so unique as a sailing destination is the close proximity of its 50-plus islands. It’s so much fun to take a day out on the water and just stop by a different island on the way home for a sundowner (as we often do!) We’re excited that our friends at VOYAGE are taking this issue with them to the annual Annapolis Sailboat Show, held from October 14-18, where they will be showing off the VOYAGE 590 electric yacht. You can learn all about this catamaran, designed and built by VOYAGE, on page 44. We’re putting a spotlight on six of our very own artisans in this issue. One thing that you will notice about our community is the sheer amount of creative talent amongst our people – from visual art, pottery and sculpture, and handmade upcycled accessories, to bags and skincare products (to mention just a few). BVI - I N S PI RED PO ETRY BY TRACI O’ D EA Poet Traci O’Dea, former lecturer at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College has released a book of poetry, Waving, inspired by the BVI. Dr Richard Georges, Poet Laureate of the Virgin Islands and President of HLSCC, says: “Traci O’Dea’s Waving is a meditation on the body and the universal sea, of letting go and letting be, as preoccupied with the spiritual as the physical”. O’Dea’s book has also received praise from New York Times best-selling author Sophie Cousens, who says: “Her words are at once beautiful, original, searingly honest and at times haunting. She guts the human condition and serves it up warm, still breathing on the page”. Excerpt from Waving: My Jeep windshield’s a piece of Plexiglas that’s so scratched up, I have to lean my head outside, like a dog, to see at night. The gas gauge and speedometer don’t work. Instead, I fill the tank from time to time and pray. Pinprick-sized rust holes, inverted Braille, let rain and sand sieve through the battered, gray hot metal floor. The roof’s a former sail. But sitting in the split cloth seat, feet bare, hair everywhere, as I steer on the high ridge to town (moon peeping through palm trees to shine on roofs, sea moss, and low-tide sand), the air is like standing naked at the open fridge deciding if I want water or wine. FOR DECADES SABA Rock has been a beacon on the British Virgin Islands sailing scene. When Herbert (Bert) Kilbride opened his private island home to passing boaters in the 1970s, selling beers and snacks out of his bohemian-style bar, The Pirates’ Pub, Saba Rock became an instant hit. A must-visit destination in the North Sound for those in the know. “My friends, it is quite likely that after your first visit, you will become bohemian Sabarockans, incurably dependent on the charm of the island. Every attempt to leave ends in the desire to return as soon as possible” Bert Kilbride Now, four years after Hurricane Irma decimated it, this iconic island resort is reborn, wholly reimagined, rebuilt and reopening on October 15, 2021, with a brand-new redesign. The latest incarnation of a much-loved BVI classic that has brought faithful visitors back year after year. Since reconstruction began in 2018, led by Gardner Construction with project management by BCQS International, there has been much anticipation around this grand reopening. Devoted Saba Rock supporters were eagerly awaiting more details as the resort began to take shape. Responsible for that new look is architect, Petr Kolar from ADR architectural studio. He introduces a modern and industrial beach-chic feel, with island-inspired design elements and a healthy dose of Saba Rock history–retaining many of the features that have made it so incredibly popular with guests for the last five decades. The team at Saba Rock wanted to keep the island’s original free-spirited charm, while bringing it up-to-date. Appealing to guests both new and old, every detail has been carefully considered, every comfort thoughtfully tended to. RIGHT Architect Petr Kolar has created a modern, industrial, beach chic feel.

A key consideration for the construction was the longevity of the resort and the structural integrity. The previous framework has been replaced with a concrete structure: concrete walls, concrete floors, concrete ceilings, and a pressed wood roof. Exacting detail has been incorporated into the design and construction, so that the resort can better sustain future hurricane threats.
Accommodation options
The resort features just seven hotel rooms and two suites. They ensure that your getaway is perfectly secluded and delightfully private. There’s an element of exclusivity, rooms and suites are nestled in lush gardens at the back of the resort. They have kept the barefoot-casual vibe but elevated it beautifully. Spacious and generously appointed suites with sweeping ocean views, contemporary furniture and free-standing baths have vibrant accent colours of teal, scarlet and burgundy. Rich velvet furnishings are juxtaposed with polished concrete, bare wood, mixed metals and lots of glass. The quirky decor features surfboards, kite-boards, oars and other pieces of nautical paraphernalia. Each room is slightly different, but all of them feature a memory wall paying tribute to Saba’s transformation through the years. Smiling sepia-toned pictures of the “last Pirate of the Caribbean”, Saba Rock founder Bert Kilbride, stand out alongside bright blue skies, sea views, kite-boarders, surfers, flags and boats across generations of Saba Rock history.

The boutique
The new Saba Rock Resort boutique will continue to stock the popular branded Saba Rock merchandise, expanding to include even more logo items alongside multiple lines of swimwear, footwear and apparel. In addition, they have partnered with local designers and will be offering custom made one-of-a-kind collections of high-end jewelry and resort wear. The stylishly curated

Salvaged artefacts, memorabilia, coins and trinkets continue to be a feature at the resort, many donated by the Kilbride family. The new resort also sees the return of the famous Saba Rock aquarium, bigger and better than ever. Once again, it will house pieces salvaged from the wreck of the RMS Rhone by Bert himself.
Restaurant and Sunset Bar
The same spacious wrap-around deck area forms the restaurant, with
captivating views over the water and beautiful sunsets. Restyled with mismatched furniture, it has a barefoot elegance, with the bar now more prominent than ever. The hospitality team comes from various backgrounds–having worked across the Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. As a result, the chef and his culinary crew intend to elevate the cuisine, featuring local dishes, fresh seafood and other extras and specialties influenced by their international experience. A favourite new feature has to be the addition of the Sunset Bar, upstairs of the boutique. This casual lounge space with its swinging seats, sofas

WHOEVER SAID “LESS is more” had obviously never heard of multi-island vacations, because when it comes to a trip to the British Virgin Islands, more is definitely more. Do you like the thought of diving down to the wreck of the RMS Rhone on the western coast of Salt Island in the morning and getting up close to flamingos on Anegada by the afternoon? As regional marketing manager of the BVI Tourist Board, RaeNisia Scatliffe, said in our recent interview: “The British Virgin Islands is a treasure chest of neighbouring islands, beckoning to be discovered and rediscovered.” In this treasure chest of unspoiled volcanic islands, close proximity allows you to easily visit multiple destinations in a single day with just a hop, skip and jump from island to
island. Apart from their geography, the distinctive character of each island offers its own unique set of experiences. But before dropping anchor at any of the islands, let’s dive deeper and learn more about them.
Diving deeper
The British Virgin Islands, comprising of four main islands and over 50 islets and cays, is part of a volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean. The largest island, Tortola, is home to the capital, Road Town, and is widely known for its yacht-filled harbours and white, sandy beaches, such as Cane Garden Bay, Smuggler’s Cove and Apple Bay. On the southwest side of the island, the Sage Mountain National Park offers trails and breathtaking views over the nearby islands. These landmarks and many
more characterise the island of Tortola. The only coral island in the Virgin Islands’ volcanic chain, Anegada, is the second largest island. Anegada is a pancake-flat paradise surrounded by remarkable Horseshoe reef, which is the largest in the Caribbean and the fourth largest on the planet. A variety of indigenous flora and fauna thrive here, from frangipani and feathery sea lavender to flamingoes and rare rock iguanas. There is also a wealth of history to explore, like the ancient conch shell mounds on the east end of the island that stand as a testament of the island’s Amerindian heritage. Natural beauty covers practically all of Virgin Gorda’s 8.5 square miles. The third largest island features breathtaking beaches and the world-famous Baths, a collection of massive beachside boulders as large as 40 feet in diameter. Nature lovers

will especially enjoy the wonders of the national parks and nature sanctuaries. Hike up Gorda Peak, the island’s high point, for a spectacular panoramic view of the surrounding islands. Named after an early Dutch settler and former pirate, Jost Van Dyke is the fourth largest island. Rent a jeep or walk the nature trails that extend over the entire island. Dance the night away to local music and live bands at Foxy’s. Enjoy the nature’s cool and refreshing jacuzzi, the naturally formed tidal pool that found at the east end of the island. Island exploration doesn’t end there. In fact, it is just beginning. As Clive McCoy, director of tourism, mentioned during our interview with the BVI Tourist Board “amidst our four main islands lies a safe haven of smaller islands and cays”. These 50 islets and cays allow you to explore a whole new side of island life. McCoy said that “this is the beauty of our beautiful BVI”; and implored visitors to explore our hidden gems and immerse themselves in the essence of endless possibilities. These smaller islands offer the added bonus of smaller crowds, making them ideal to visit during the pandemic. McCoy encouraged residents to “ditch the crowds and social distance close to home but away from it all”. And to visitors, he simply said, “find yourself here”. Our trip begins on the island of Tortola. Wake up and have some history with your breakfast in the converted Sugar Mill Hotel. About Salt Island
Historically, the island, which is one mile long and one mile wide, has not been known to have more than 100 inhabitants at a time. And today, it is a lonely island, as the last living resident, Norwell Durante, passed away in 2004. An extensive study by Dr Lianna Jarecki titled: Variable hydrology and salinity of salt ponds in the British Virgin Islands describes salt ponds as “bodies of water that occur from the bottom of steep watersheds”.

Dr Jarecki found that out of the 17 salt ponds in the Virgin Islands, the Salt Island salt pond has the highest concentration of salt. The salt gets to the pond through seawater that is fed via underground seeps that trickle through the shore sediments, and then into the pond. During the plantation era, and after Emancipation, residents would use the salt to preserve their meats and fish, and also export it to neighbouring islands. It was also during that time that a “salt tax” was administered which stipulated a 30 per cent tax (or one bag in three) to anyone who harvested the salt. This is in accordance with the 1904 Government Salt Pond Ordinance.
But even before then, every year a pound of salt was given to the Queen as a form of “rent” on behalf of the island’s inhabitants. This rent was suspended when Queen Victoria recognised the kindness of Salt Island residents who helped those who survived the sinking of Rhone, a UK Royal mail ship that hit a reef and went down near the island in 1867. Salt Island descendant and local artist, Lutia Durante, says he remembers his grandfather Eustace Durante talking about the tragedy and how he helped bury some of the sailors who perished. While Lutia didn’t grow up on Salt Island, his great grandmother was born and raised there. Lutia’s dad, Vivian Durante, spent many of his younger days on the island’s southern side with his aunt. Vivian was born on the neighbouring Peter Island. Lutia shares that the descendants of both Salt Island and Peter Island have a shared heritage due to the proximity of the islands.

Traditional salt breaking ceremony
In the late 1800s, residents performed the annual salt breaking ceremony, which initially took place around Easter. Residents would await the official firing of a pistol and the salt “picking” or collecting began. The last official ceremony took place in 2016, during Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday celebrations in BVI. Then Governor, His Excellency John Duncan received the “symbolic rent” or bag of salt, which was later presented as a gift to the Queen.

The more popular table salt varieties are extracted from salt mines by drilling, and the evaporation of saltwater springs or wells. Another method is via the evaporation of seawater, which is how Salt Island salt is made. Because weather patterns have

changed, the salt is now formed in the summer months, when the ponds dry up enough to leave behind a “white cast” of the once highly sought-after mineral.

Salt Island salt can be found in many supermarkets and retailers throughout the BVI. Lutia’s daughter, Alexandra Durante, has upheld the salt picking tradition and uses the salt in many of the products sold at her store, E.Co. She adds the salt to her hand soaps, body scrubs and condiments. Her dad says that the salt can easily be picked and then quickly washed for use. Lutia recommends drying it in the sun for three or four days, which turns it a brilliant white. According to Lutia, it’s the best salt to use because there are no additives, and it encourages people to add it to their meals, just as his mom did in her cooking years ago. “Just a little bit goes a long way,” he advises.

Getting to Salt Island
There aren’t any ferries or regular scheduled day trips to the island, but you can charter a yacht or powerboat to get there. Many yachts choose to anchor out and dinghy in, or some just dive in and swim to shore. The actual salt ponds are just a short walk from the beach. And if you don’t want to go alone, you can plan to visit around the end of June, when the descendants of Salt Island host an annual day trip that includes an educational tour, food, drink and entertainment. More recently, companies such as Hike BVI run organised day trips and hikes to the island where patrons learn the history of the island and get to pick salt. ■

the BVI and beyond. Their high-end creations share the abundance of the islands with those who can’t always be here.
Celeste Tyson loves that when you buy a piece from Bamboushay, you take a part of the BVI home with you. “A lot of our pieces involve actual impressions from sea life that has washed ashore,” she says. “Marine impressions are used from shells, coral, sea fans to brain coral. We also find inspiration in the environment of the BVI–palm fronds, sea grape leaves, and shell plates with accents of lizards, turtles, hummingbirds, fish, starfish, frogs, and examples of BVI fauna, replicas of BVI life.” The signature seagrape colour of Bamboushay pottery “blends the greens of the landscape with the blues of the sea,” Celeste says. Celeste hopes to expand the Bamboushay brand beyond the Caribbean, giving it more of an international reach. Celeste’s uncle, Eldred Williams, started the business almost 20 years ago. He’s from Nevis, where his family are still in the pottery business. “He’s brought back a piece of his childhood through the pottery,” she says. The main potter at Bamboushay, Ramon Herrera Mariano, has been with the company for over 15 years. “The colors, shapes, and pieces that are produced are iconic to the BVI, but they are also a representation of the Caribbean as a whole. We are colourful, resilient, and multi-functional but with

common features,” she says, laughing at her metaphor. “I love that about Bamboushay. I also love that the whole spirit has evolved–first solely pottery, then a restaurant, now the lounge vibe with live music weekly on Friday nights. People support Bamboushay in many different ways, whether having a meal, drink, meeting, or shopping in our boutique. They’re different businesses, but one Bamboushay family. Annie MacPhail’s designer bags are handmade in the BVI from re cycled materials: retired sails and kitesurfing kites, repurposed leather and rope, outdated promotional flags, recycled upholstery and awnings, and even the Olympic trial sails from the Anderson/Brockbank campaign. designed, among other things, the airport loading ramps at Kennedy Airport.” Annie originally trained in graphic design, and her impulse to reengineer materials is in her blood. In addition to her sought-after annie macphail™ bags, she creates bespoke pieces that are unique to sailing or living in the Caribbean— such as hand-sanitizer holders for sailboats, kite-tube sandbags to weigh down yoga mats for outdoor classes, and washable covers to protect bags from surface transmission of COVID-19. Some recent bits included “a bunch of recycled leather from Cuan Law when they reupholstered” and “an awning someone was throwing away”. When she gets a funky fabric offcut or spinnaker, she creates limited edition designs that fly off the shelves. Jehiah Maduro’s steel sculptures
While traveling abroad, Jehiah Maduro encountered a series of sculptures–multi-colored cows throughout the city of RaleighDurham, painted by local artists to celebrate a farming festival. He wanted to bring that kind of public art to the BVI. Jehiah has been drawing since primary school. In college, he pursued architecture, but upon graduating,

he found a job in government as a graphic artist and has continued working there for the past 20 years. Working with steel came about because his brother Jaron Maduro, a lecturer at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College, purchased a metal-cutting machine. “I provide the artistic direction, and he does the technical stuff,” Jehiah says. They started out making custom cut-steel signs, but the idea for outdoor sculptures played in the back of his mind, so he sketched cultural scenes from the BVI. “I spoke to a friend of mine from VICA [Virgin Islands Communal Association], and she was ecstatic about my sketches and showed them to the Director of Culture, Dr Katherine Smith,” he says. Dr Smith commissioned sculptures for Virgin Islands Culture Month. Each sculpture is four to five feet tall. They’re inspired by conversations with friends, the painted wall murals throughout Tortola by artists such as Ruben Vanterpool and Cedric Turnbull, and a photograph of his grandfather, Julian Madura, a Virgin Islands shipwright. “We have a rich heritage, and we need to show it off when we put on a celebration,” he says. Jehiah is already planning more sculptures, and he would “love to see more BVI art in the public sphere,” he says. He’s also working on more portable sculptures made of Plexiglas that are lighter and easier to pack in visitors’ suitcases!

“Some of our customers are soap addicts,” says Alex Durante, executive director of EC Soap Co (East Caribbean Salt and Soap Company Ltd). “They’ll buy eight to ten bars at a time. Others are addicted to the natural deodorant or the papaya face mask–made from local papaya seeds which are high in enzymes.”

Alex’s handmade, locally sourced products seem to be everywhere these days–most local hotels, resorts, and charter yachts feature EC Soap Co soap, shampoo, shower gel, sunscreen, and conditioner, but the big difference is that each batch is custom tailored for the client “so you don’t see the same products at each resort,” she says. Alex works with local farmers, beekeepers, and other harvesters to keep her products as local as possible. Local raw ingredients include aloe, turmeric, Salt Island salt, tea, honey, papaya seeds, cotton, and beeswax. She also uses her popular storefront on Main Street to showcase other BVI artisans. “I’m trying to create a medium for everyone to flow through. Real estate for storefronts can be cost-prohibitive for new artists and entrepreneurs starting out, so I offer them space in my shop.” Ideally, Alex would like to see a new pillar in the BVI economy– exporting of BVI luxury goods. Lin Crook has been creating stained glass since 1981. Her passion started as a hobby, though she sometimes donated pieces to BVI art auctions and fundraisers. It wasn’t until last year that she got her trade license

to create stained glass pieces and sell them under the name of Island Reflections BVI. Since then, she has been working nonstop, thanks mainly to word of mouth, BVI Community Board, and people seeing her pieces in local homes or establishments. Most recently, she completed three pairs of stunningly intricate bougainvillea windows for above the three entrances at Indigo House, Cane Garden Bay’s new foodie-favorite restaurant. “It’s all-consuming at the moment,” she says from her home overlooking Brewer’s Bay, where she also has her studio. Each piece is custom designed by Lin, then she cuts the glass, foils it in copper, solders it together, and treats the solder. One piece took her 190 hours to complete.
