Timeless Cuban Art

K

adir came to artistic maturity at a time when the image and illusion of the Cuban Revolution’s triumph was greatly diminished. Much of his work is inspired by a meditation on time: in blurring the lines between past, present, and future, he critiques the effects of progress, or lack thereof, on society in spiritual, economic, and political arenas. Meet the artist during the Summer Soirée at Café Sapori on August 15th. Kadir will be on hand to personally donate a special piece for silent auction to benefit WPB Friends of Fisher House. SAVE THE DATE | Opening Night August 23 | 5:30-7:30 p.m. Opening Night: Artist-in-residence Kadir López Palm Beach Photographic Centre | Clematis Street To view more of his works visit www.kadirlopez.com

An Alumna Returns… Maribel, a Rosey Ancienne returned to her old stomping grounds

True to its legacy On June 28th, I joined over a thousand Roséens, parents, guests, faculty and alumni ranging in ages 18 to over 90, at their annual Fête de Fin d’Année. Glasses in hand and well supplied by numerous buffet stands, we mingled and strolled between concerts, dance presentations, a stage play and various exhibits.

In search of memories past….

Most Memorable: The International ambiance, the multiple Languages spoken throughout the evening and the bond & camaraderie unique to the Rosey Family, True to their motto:

“A school for life, a family forever…”

For more information about Le Rosey, please visit: www.rosey.ch

Left to right: Chef Kim, Madame Payne (My former Headmistress ) , & Malcolm ‘Henry’ Higgins (My former Math teacher)

“It’s like coming home! Truly a nostalgic experience to see so many school mates witnessing their children’s graduation and humble awakening to hear those who taught me over 35 years ago, identify me through my daughter whom they taught 23 years later! I said my good-byes with keys in hand to Chalet TiPunch, and headed to Gstaad, where I proceeded to spend a magical week with my son and two close friends! Thank you Philippe and Anne Gudin!”

Giving Back Also attending the two-day ceremonies was Monsieur Alassane Issa Maiga who represented, Le Rosey’s sister school in Mali, RoseyAbantara . Inaugurated in 2007, the school is entirely financed by the Le Rosey Charity Committee and presently enrolls 1,500 students.

“R

oséens come from privileged backgrounds, and it is important that they learn to help those less fortunate than themselves. Particular attention is paid to this aspect of their education both through a community service program and the work of the Charity Committee, which plays a key role in the endeavor to open students’ eyes and hearts to the plight of those most in need roughout the world,” said Philippe Gudin.

Milking our short Séjour in Switzerland Maribel’s Favorite Swiss Spots Near Geneva

I

moved to Gstaad at the age of seven, worked and lived in Geneva and still refer to Switzerland as home. So the plan was to spend a week with family and friends. I had identified the places I would share with them. All of them! (If we had six months.) But we just had seven days…. De rigueur was a stop at Gruyères, a medieval town and home to Gruyère cheese and halfway between Geneva and Gstaad. A baguette and chunk of aged cheese was the perfect compleChâteau de Gruyères ment to our final destination: Chalet Ti-Punch!! From day one and blessed with sunny, dry and 60 degree weather we embarked on majestic walks, explored new additions to Rosey’s winter campus, relived memories at the Gstaad Palace with my dear friend Ernst Scherz, shopped at Lorenz Bach’s boutique and outlet and visited the local fromageries, all the while we planned our next meal.

La Plage de Tannay-Located on Lake Geneva near the medieval town of Nyon, it’s known for the best filets de perches and pommes frites

Ferry from Nyon to Yvoire-20 minute ferry across Lake Geneva from a Swiss medieval village to a French medieval gem

Auberge du Dully– Located minutes from Rosey, this rustic farmhouse is a destination for food connoisseurs, offering the best poulet rôti, tomates farçi and tarte à la crème

Gstaad and Environs Arnensee in Feutersoy – A panoramic 15 minute drive from Gstaad, the restaurant is perched on a hill overlooking the beautiful lake of Aarnen. I recommend the Truite au Bleu (fresh poached trout)

In between the magnificent views of mountains, lakes, waterfalls, memories and shopping we ate très bien and drank beaucoup!

Having celebrated many teenage birthdays there, it was a pleasure finding the staff is still the same! The best raclette, fondue and majestic view of the Vidamanette!

A Legend Revisited….

Alpina Hotel, Gstaad

The Alpina is Gstaad’s newest icon. Originally built in 1907, and demolished in 1995, the Grand Hotel Alpina was Gstaad’s first FIRST Class hoteI. It celebrated its grand reopening last Christmas. The hotel’s design makes use of materials and craftsmanship typical to the region, including centuries-old fir wood crafted by master artisans. It combines Swiss tradition and thoughtful luxury. The result is Grandeur. It goes beyond Swiss stereotypes to create a fresh, young and modern interpretation of Alpine Chic. Facilities include 56 rooms and suites, Japanese cuisine from Megu, a Cuban Cigar Room and a Swiss ‘Stübli’ restaurant. Among the year round amenities are the Six Senses Spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and alpine activities in the Bernese Oberland. One of the most impressive and unique features of the hotel is their eclectic art collection. Exquisitely curated, every piece is placed as if it had been created for that spot. On a lazy day, you can further delight your senses by admiring this fine collection throughout the public spaces.

Where wishes come true… (A Personal Anecdote) I remember fondly staying at The Alpina every summer in the mid sixties! So I was thrilled when Niklaus Leuenberger, Alpina’s Commander in Chief and Stefan Shaer, Chief Wishmaker, arranged for my friends Claudia, Marie and I to tour the facilities. The Suite to the Stars, as I call it, took 20 minutes to visit! Private Jacuzzi on its own terrace, gym, massage room and solarium are just some of the suite’s private amenities. Indoor Pool at the Six Senses Spa

We thanked them for their hospitality, raved about the building and the beautiful Six Senses Spa! Claudia mentioned New York stress and the hope to disconnect. Next thing we knew, our magnifique hôtes arranged for us to be oh-so-holy-pampered! Master Manus did just that with a 90 minute personalized consultation and rejuvenating Ayurvedic treatment. "Ommm my God! I'm in heaven...Or at the Alpina, same difference. Manus asked me a few questions and told me my Dosha was Pitta, what foods to avoid and what I had a green light to indulge in. He is a jewel! And to have him in the Swiss Alps! Since he said nothing about avoiding caviar, let's finish the perfect day by sharing Black River Caviar with Niklaus and Stefan! And after that Maribel, anything you want. I'll even tidy up your room!” said Claudia Wagner. Make sure you bid on 2 night stay in Deluxe suite at Alpina during Café Sapori Soiree (Aug 15).
