eronica Scharf Garcia’s classic clay figurines
are produced in the Raku tradition, in which the last step of the firing process is a smoke reaction which envelopes the piece, lending an element of mystery and chance outcome to the glaze and texture of the finished product. “Clay has been in wide use since ancient times. It has a primordial, tactile feel and I, in turn, feel a strong kinship while working in this method.” says Garcia In the Soldiers of Fortune Series— Series the shapes are morphed animal and human figurines of varying sizes, representing Messengers, Missionaries, Shamans, Spies and Shape Changers. adir Lopez Nieves, was born 1972 in Las Tunas, a provincial Cuban town, his pieces are made on top of original publicity signs of the 1950’s as supports for the photographic images of the Havana of those days. The works of Kadir have come across a swift windfall: in the course of very few years, they have whirled through museums, galleries and showrooms—and are also found in some of the most prestigious private collections worldwide. Kadir incorporates serigraphic engraving, instead of traditional pigments, using the technique of porcelain baking. The colors are applied over the steel and are actually baked separately in different consecutive layers, until the desired design is achieved. Kadir draws and makes his own prints with ceramic pigments, resins, enamels and other materials that naturally allow for transparency in order to let the photographic images of the Havana of those days show through.
LTIMA ART SPOTLIGHT
“The works arise from the memory and desire to give art work form which today is nostalgia in the memory of so many Cuban born and subsequent generations; it is like infinity. The city enters the sign that was once in it. Each work completes a cycle: past, future, present; and also oblivion, recollection, memory,” observes Lopez.
