News Editor's Note

Hello giraffes! Happy holidays everyone, and if you dont celebrate, happy winter break!I just want to remind everyone that I'm proud of everything you have done this year and keep up the hard work next year! As the end of 2017 comes and 2018 begins to creep near us, most say, "New Year New Me" and come up with goals that usally last a few weeks. However my goal is to make a difference in Key Club and our community though attending more service events! I hope everyone has similar goals to not just improve yourself but to improve our homes and schools through what key clubbers do best, service! Thank you for all you guys do, adios!

Lieutenant Governor's Note Happy New Year to the most amazing division in all of CNH! Thank you for being such an instrumental part of making this year the best of my life. I can’t imagine where I’d be without D15N and all the relationships it has brought me! I have a quick announcement.. I’m PREGNANT! That’s right, within the next month I will have a baby, a brand new lieutenant governor elect who will serve the division in new and amazing ways for the 20182019 term. Don’t forget to get delegates ready for Conclave so that your club has input on who is elected! As the term draws to a close and I quickly approach irrelevancy, let’s finish strong. We have four months to go, and I know that we can continue to serve our home, school, and community and bring the division to new heights! Thank you all for everything you have done for me, and for your support even in my weaker moments. All Hail Giraffia. <3

Fall Rally This past November was my second ever Fall Rally as a Key Clubber. Unfortunately, I didn't go to Fall Rally my Freshman year and I especially regretted it after going my Sophomore year for the first time. However, I regret missing out on that first Fall Rally even more after goingthis past month. To put itsimply, it was amazing. It was a oneof akind experience that can only be replicated once a year. It's hard to put into words, but seeing Key Clubbers from all over Southern California, Nevada and Hawaii decked out in spirit gear and pouring their hearts out was euphoric. Everything, from the bus ride to the main rally, was something out of a dream and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. Even though we didn't end up bringing home that spirit stick, I still couldn't be more proud for the division I serve & wouldn't want to do it with anyone else. In the end, Fall Rally was a unique experience filled with emotions, new friends, and a reminder of why we do what we do and I'll be sure to not miss out on it next year!

My experience at Fall Rally as a D15N Giraffe was amazing. As over exaggerated as that sounds, it really is not. It was super fun meeting everyone from all the other divisions. This experience was truly amazing. When I was at Fall Rally, I could just feel all the positive energy from everyone and everyone was just so nice. Also, since I did have a free hugs sign, I really enjoyed having people come up to me all happy and giving me hugs. This was an experience that I would totally do again for my next years for high school and I want to encourage more of my fellow Key Clubbers to go because it’s really a great experience. Lastly, if I may add, the spirit battles when you’re trying to go from ride to ride are pretty awesome. I won’t forget about everyone asking me, “How do you feel?” With all this fun I don’t think anyone can say that they aren’t excited for next year’s Fall Rally. I can certainly say that I am super excited, and I know members are, too.

Reindeer Run

On Saturday morning, December 9 th , I had the chance to volunteer for the Reindeer Run in Ontario. I thought it was just Etiwanda’s Key Club volunteering, but when I arrived at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, Etiwanda’s ASB and CSF, and Rancho’s Key Club were volunteering as well. This was just another service event I could attend to fill up my hours, but once I found out a lot of my friends were attending from different clubs and my friends from Rancho’s Key Club, I couldn’t be happier and more excited. I was assigned to help with refreshments at the Pancake Breakfast station where all of Rancho’s Key Club members were working. I met a few more members I’ve never met before and we helped each other pour coffee and juice for the people coming to buy breakfast. This year’s Reindeer Run was much more eventful than the Reindeer Run I attended last December because of all the friends I made, and I’m really excited for next year’s Reindeer Run as a junior.

Seinor Breakfast Set Up

11

Another event that our members were able to participate during the month of December was the Senior Breakfast at the Gibson Senior Center. The purpose behind this event was to serve as a social event for the Senior citizens of the Upland community. In the sense that the Gibson Senior Center opens its door to all the Senior citizens of Upland, so that they are able to enjoy a warm meal and the company of other Senior citizens. We arrived early to help the City of Upland setup for this event, and we also helped through the course of the event to ensure that everything was going according to schedule. So, we were tasked with ensuring that every attendee was properly seated, and received their breakfast. As the event winded down and all the attendees were departing, we stayed to help cleanup and ensure that the Gibson Center was in its usual condition, so that it could return to its daily functions.

Isaiah's Rock

The event at Isaiah’s Rock was an eyeopening experience that I will truly never forget. Volunteers from all over D15S, D15E, D35E ad well as our own D15N were able to help out the destitute with providing them with the food needed for having hearty Thanksgiving meal in a two day time period. For the first day, we were asked to package all the food to prepare for the destitute in need of it for the holidays. The second day the volunteers were tasked to simply hand out that we packaged the night beforehand. This entire experience made me more understanding about the harsh predicaments of life that these people endure give them a massive disadvantage when it comes to having a nice holiday meal with loved ones. Just helping them out really continues to continue the evergoing flame that embodies my key club passion for helping people out in the community. It occurred just before Thanksgiving and really epitomized the value that the holiday represents: giving thanks to the gifts that one has been given in life whether it be materialistic or intangible.

On the night of Tuesday, November 21st, I had the opportunity to attend a foodpackaging event at Isaiah’s Rock. There were hundreds of other volunteers including members from our division and other key clubbers from other divisions, like D35W, helping in packaging food items to be distributed for families in need the next morning. The coordinators of the event were very kind and it seemed to be a very successful event since many boxes were filled of bundles of items. After we were done packaging, the coordinators had everyone gather in a circle to sing together and then fed all of us hot dogs for all our hard work. This event was truly one that I enjoyed and I would love to participate with this organization in the nearfuture.

Children's Craft Event

Hectic is easily the word I would use to describe the Children’s Christmas Craft Event. People were always moving. But helping kids build Christmas lanterns was definitely fun too. In the beginning, before the kids started arriving, we were all split into groups with different tasks. Some of the volunteers were supposed to wrap lights while other were in charge or preparing the decorations. When the children began to arrive I was at first surprised by how easy it was to build a lantern, but teaching ourselves how to make one, was way easier than teaching kids and parents how to build one. But it was definitely worth it. The snowmanshaped lanterns were extremely cute and a lot of the kids and parents were very happy with how the snowmen turned out. The snowmen had googlyeyes for faces and pompoms for noses. Certain kids doodled all over the lanterns with the markers and other kids left the lanterns mostly empty. The wave of children seemed never to stop, but the volunteers never stopping working!

Art and Music Festival An event that we participated during the month of December was the Upland Christmas Nativity, Art and Music festival. In which we participated in settingup and helping clean up once the event concluded. As well as staying throughout the course of the event and helping ensure that the event went well. The reason behind the event was to bring the Upland community together, and honor the outstanding individuals that impacted the community during the course of the 2017 year. This event included musical and group performances, and concluded with an awards ceremony to honor in particularly to honor the Senior of the Year. Overall, this was an event to recount the events that various service organizations have been a part of during the course of the 2017 year, and a great wrap up to an amazing year. This was a bitter/sweet event in the sense that it reminded our senior members that as the year comes to an end so does their time in high school, but more importantly their time in Key Club.

Upland Animal Shelter

Volunteering with animals is my favorite, and when you combine that with key club you know I was sure to sign up quick! Although an early event, we started our volunteer work in Upland Animal Shelter at 6:30AM beginning with the shelter's laundry room. As you would expect, it was a dirty job handling used towels and dog toys, however with perserverance, it was kinda fun! Following that, us volunteers did miscelaneous tasks around from cleaning litter boxes and kennel cages to dusting the shelter! The best part of this in my opinion was being able to walk around and vist all the dogs and cats once we finished, not going to lie I cried because I wanted to take all of them home. This event was surely heart warming and a great way to start my weekend, and I will be sure to come again the next time we have this event and encourage everyone else to come too!
