Coronation Ramblings...
Rather than the view from our new office I am lucky enough to be looking out on a very sunny day in the Loire Valley. The apple blossom in the area is amazing this year giving the promise of a good harvest, frost willing, and plenty of Pink Lady apples to fill the supermarket shelves!
We have been totally overwhelmed with the reaction to the Coronation ranges that we have put together for you. Orders have been way above what we could ever have forecast, and that is having had the experience of the Platinum Jubilee only last year. Our initial orders of stock were quickly sold, we are working with our suppliers to get more as quickly as possible. I can only apologise for any delays you may experience; it has caught us all rather by surprise. In a good way.
The quality of the pieces being made for this great occasion are a true testament to the skills that remain in the UK, despite many being happy to say they are not what they were. I am sure the King will be delighted that so many UK suppliers have really pushed the boat out for him. On the 6th of May Janet & I will also be celebrating the wedding of our son Oliver to Hannah. There may not be a Crown, or probably a balcony appearance, but I am sure we will have a wonderful day and enjoy catching up with the Coronation coverage on the Sunday.
After a short time when we were unable to work with Dartington and Caithness we are delighted to be able to bring those two great brands back into the catalogue. The Caithness Coronation Paperweight is sure to be a great success and the Dartington range is as ever stylish and well designed.
I first met the owner of Royal Scot Crystal when I was a thin 23-year-old Brand Manager at Denby Tableware and he was the Chief Executive of the parent company. Almost 40 years later it is great to keep that connection alive. The Royal Scot range has been very popular as usual, and we were delighted to be featured alongside their paperweight on This Morning. A new range of commemorative decanters has been added and have already been well received online.
Away from the Coronation Moorcroft have been as busy as ever with new designs and they do not disappoint. Personally, I think this is one of their best collections for a little while and I feel that a couple might have to be added to my collection.
Janet, Grace and I spent an afternoon at the Waterford Wedgwood showroom a few weeks ago and selected a few new pieces to add to the catalogue. I hope you like what we have chosen. The Irish Lace Bowl is truly a stunning piece.
As I have mentioned before I am a keen, if rather messy, cook and I take my utensils very seriously and expect them to last. My collection of Mermaid tins included almost every size long before we bought Goviers. I am now totally converted to the Samuel Groves saucepans and after 12 months testing am happy to give 5 stars to the non-stick frying pans. My morning omelette has never been better!
We have for some time been looking at providing some imaginative gift solutions for key family events. Our first collection has been put together by Grace from the extensive Steiff range. An inspired and thoughtful collection to welcome that new addition. We will be working on other collections in due course.
While in France Janet & I took the opportunity to visit the showroom of Andree Jardin the world renown brush makers based near Nantes. On the warmest day of our time in France we were able to see the full range of items they make and add some new pieces to our range, these will be in stock and on the web site shortly as well as featuring in the July catalogue.
By the time this catalogue lands on your mat the Coronation build up will be in full swing, or if the Royal Mail are late we will all be watching the highlights. I hope that the day is as spectacular and memorable as it deserves to be and that the King & Queen can enjoy their very special day. We will raise a glass to them both at our own family celebration.
Last but by no means least Natasha has joined the Goviers team. We are delighted to have her working with us, and you will have another voice at the end of the phone. I hope that she can cope with the madness that is Goviers!

The anointing is the most sacred part of the coronation ceremony, and takes place before the investiture and crowning. Traditionally, the Archbishop pours holy oil from an ampulla, into a spoon, and anoints the sovereign on the hands, chest and head. The gesture dates back to the Old Testament Book of Kings and the anointing of Solomon as King.
Reflecting a modern monarchy, the ancient recipe for the coronation anointing oil has been updated to include olive oil scented with a mix of essential oils, benzoin, cinnamon, jasmine, neroil, rose, sesame, with orange blossom also added. It was these coronation emblems that inspired Nicola to create a design fit for our new King. Oranges and burnished brown cinnamon sticks sit amongst white roses with soft cream shading at their centres, and small star-shaped jasmine flowers - all set against the dramatic backdrop of a classic Moorcroft dark blue ground.
The ampulla dates back to Roman time, and was a small round vessel with two handles, used for sacred purposes. Nicola wanted to emulate this ancient shape with her contemporary design and so Moorcroft’s classic twin-handled vase has been re-imagined for King Charles III’s coronation on a new and smaller shape to mark this very special historic occasion.
The Coronation of King Charles III will take place at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday 6th May. The Abbey has been Britain’s coronation church since 1066 and King Charles III will be the 40th reigning monarch to be crowned there.
Due to the historic and important role the Abbey has played in the nation’s coronation services for almost 1000 years; Kerry wanted to include a number of its key architectural elements within her design to celebrate the occasion. The abbey has the highest Gothic vault in England and its arches surround the circumference of this round lidded box while the black and white triangular band, that runs around the base, pays homage to the chequerboard floor that runs past the choir stands to the high altar.
Finally, the magnificent Rose Window inspired one of the most intricate lids Moorcroft has ever created. As for the shape itself, this harks back to the time of founder William Moorcroft, when it was last used to celebrate the coronation of King Charles III’s grandfather, King George VI on 12th May 1937. Its revival at Moorcroft pays tribute to the past, while commemorating the new Carolean era.
QUEEN OF THE BORDER
Designed by Emma Bossons. H 35cm W 13.5cm £1835
“For me, the magnificent, gloriously apparelled delphinium. With its impeccable bearing and massed in platoons, holds pride of place in my botanical affects”
King Charles III.
Delphiniums gained the name Queen of the Border since their tall flower spikes make excellent perennial borders in gardens and classic landscapes. Indeed, His Majesty King Charles III, has declared that his favourite flowers are the gloriously apparelled delphinium. It might then be assumed, that if his wife, and Queen Consort Camilla, were to be a flower, she would be a delphinium.
The name origin of delphiniums comes from the Greek word delphin (dolphin) due to the flower’s spur resembling a dolphin’s back. Queen of the Border is a feminine design, with Art Nouveau curves that comes crashing down like Hokusai’s Great waves off Kanagawa in which Prussian blue wood block paints invigorated a new art movement. The blue hues hand painted layer by layer, hold an electric mix of colour, where regal purples, soft cornflower and cobalt blues charge the senses through a host of delphiniums in flower and bud, each a reflection of its kind and yet something refreshingly unique.
Queen Consort Camilla will be a host to Presidents, Kings and Queens, Heads of State and so much more. Nevertheless, she will also be our Queen of Borders, protector and champion to a budding new generation, as well as the lost and the forgotten, in truth, those who she has, quietly and steadfastly, already served.

To match the brilliance of his bulging amber eyes, Kerry’s Tree Frog sports a bright lime green body that holds hints of yellow as he sits comfortably on a bulbous green leaf amid carefully curated jungle greenery. The large leaves above him act as a canopy to protect him from the tropical rain showers and to keep him hidden from those that seek him out in the jungle.

Simplicity Egg
Bright yellow buttercups and pure white daises with their soft yellow centres bound together in leafy bonds of eternal love. This egg takes inspiration from the song written by H. Fleetwood Sheppard in 1891.
In Colours of Winter the hedgerow is mostly bare, brown and twiggy. There is some colour though, from both the yellow hazel catkins and the yellow breast of blue tits. The catkins rely on the wind to blow their pollen or from helpful feathered friends to aid the pollen on its journey, bringing some much-needed colour to the hedgerow.

DANCE OF THE BEES April Mini £143 NEW
Nicola has chosen the humble daisy, the flower of April, for her latest miniature of the month, which sees an active bee dancing around the flower’s white petals and golden centre.
Known as the Queen of the Moorlands, the town of Leek in Staffordshire is brimming with charm, character and Arts and Crafts heritage. Sir Thomas Wardle (1831-1909) and William Morris (1834-96) collaborated in Leek on Indian silks, dyeing with natural colours and block printing. By 1876 Wardle was printing a range of fourteen designs for Morris & Co and Wardle’s silks were sold in Liberty, and were, the only black silk that Queen Victoria would wear following the death of her beloved Prince Albert. Morris and Wardle’s textiles were exhibited at major exhibitions and were still the best of their type decades later. Wardle said of Morris that he had an understanding of form and colour which was unparalleled. Inspired by these great artists, Kerry skilfully weaves the feathery blues of Morris & Co.’s Tulip design to create a sky over Leek market place, complete with the billowing canopies of the market stalls themselves and the gothic façade of Leek All Saints' Church, a Grade I listed building (built 1885–1887) with stained glass by Morris & Co. In church Wardle’s own hymns were sang and his wife, Lady Wardle, who established the Embroidery School for Women in 1879, hung silk embroideries on the wall. The Leek School of Art and Crafts, which Morris would have seen every morning from his guest house window during his two years in Leek, holding connections to both Wardle and Morris. Morris’s own wife is remembered too, in her favourite orange Honeysuckle Morris & Co. design, which grounds this prestige vase in exotic Eastern turmeric and tangerine-amber colours.
Queen of the Moorlands
Prestige Vase
Designed by Kerry Goodwin. H 40cm £5750
Anyone who has ever witnessed elephants in the wild will remember them forever. The same can be said of this Moorcroft design. Their sheer size has been captured in a colossal vase. Nose to trunk, a herd of African elephants circle this prestige vase. On one panel, you are confronted head-on with a lone male striding towards you, his vast tusks darting into the sky like rockets, whilst lifting swirls of dust from under his Jurassic feet. During the dry season, elephants use their tusks to dig up dry riverbeds and create watering holes from where many animals can drink. In this design, a panel holds a calf wallowing in the waterhole, playfully showering himself. As the calf joins his herd in the third panel on their endless matriarchal march for survival, Elewana, the Swahili word meaning ‘harmony,’ becomes clear as trunks curl, clouds billow above and giant, umbrella acacia trees mimic their form.

Here Nicola Slaney takes her inspiration from William Morris' loyal colleague, John Henry Dearle. Dearle created a trio of wall hangings entitled Owl and Pigeon c.1895, and they were bought from Morris & Co as work kits, and were all very ambitious projects. One such kit was bought by a very good client, Mrs Battye who embroidered her wall hanging in silks on silk damask between c.1898 and 1900 and which are now on display in the V&A Museum.
By the end of his life, Dearle was one of those rare people who had no need to cling to the Morris name to carve out a career for himself. He was too good for that. Instead, he delivered an outpouring of excellence which was so good that when Morris died in October 1896, Dearle had been in effective charge of Morris & Co. since 1890. Not bad for a young lad who started his working life as a shop assistant under the watchful eye of Morris himself. No surprise also when you find that Dearle remained in charge of key sections of the Morris business until January 1932.
Dearle never sought to raise himself to the top of the mountain by effectively stealing the Morris halo. Instead, everything that he did was done for his mentor, friend and idol. Only in the 1980s, following intensive research by the Victoria and Albert Museum, was Dearle given his full credits and his designs are no longer attributed to Morris. This would have included the Owl and Pigeon, so admired by Nicola. Her prestige vase is for the Moorcroft connoisseur and keeps the story of Morris and Dearle very much alive today.

Hidden beneath the deep water there still remain scenes, untainted by man. This is a place where fish twist their curvaceous forms around tightly lipped underwater lilies and floating reed beds, pushing upwards with tiny fins and a hardy beat of a tail. Glistening in burnt paprika and silver-blue hues, scales ascend under a flurry of bubbles to allow their beauty to tempt the eye to what lies beneath. With gifted grace, Nicola Slaney, nudges a clear blue sky to impart its glory into the reflections of pristine-white iridescent petals. Serenity is mastered.
Many people love black cats. Well, perhaps not if you are a fish and the black cat is hungry. It’s all very well if a designer has hidden you among a forest of colourful water plants and flowers, but cats have flexible claws. Those agile paws might reach over and catch you. However, cats hate water and even a wet paw may be too high a price to pay for trying to catch a little Japanese fighting fish.
Emma has taken care to ensure that the fish are camouflaged among the colourful plants and flowers. This provides an artistic touch to their watery home. The cat is fighting a losing battle, mostly with himself. The water is hatefully wet; the fighting fish have no wish to be caught and the swishing of their fins and tails tell of a worrying possibility of aggression and harm to a vulnerable, wet paw. Water lilies grace the top of the design with a dragonfly or two flitting around as a captive audience to the drama. To ensure a little calm near the base of the vase, the designer has added colourful foliage and the black cat can do nothing other than acknowledge defeat.

Tobermory Plaque
Designed by Vicky Lovatt
14.5 x 35cm £495
With the smell of salt and seaweed in the seemingly incessant wind blowing around the Scottish Island of Mull, the small town of Tobermory clings to the shoreline Tobermory was founded in 1786 as an ideal place for a fishing settlement complete with a natural harbour. Today, it is as picturesque as it has always been and as if to add to the atmosphere, a Gaelic song made famous by the late Bing Crosby called Tobermory Bay, has made its own special contribution to the little town. The small, painted cottages still hang around the curving harbourside and it was these little houses which first captured the imagination of Vicky Lovatt. The scenic mix is almost intoxicating in its beauty and not surprisingly, Vicky finished her day with a folder full of preliminary

Another World Plaque
Designed by Nicola Slaney.
24.5 x 34.5cm £825
Detailed and accurate line work and sympathetic colours are the hallmarks of Nicola Slaney’s finest work. Rated as one of the finest designs ever produced by Moorcroft and fine enough to form the cover of a book, Nicola’s Another World astounded everyone. This plaque, to compliment the prestige design of the same name, is a canvas to a wonderful flurry of water, fins and flowers in an imaginary subaquatic scene. ‘I used one of my favourite colour palettes for this design- it is similar to the colours used in Talwin,’ Nicola explained. Another World, as the name would suggest, visits the tranquil spaces of our underwater planet, featuring a gentle giant of the water, covered in glistening scales.

Grass of Parnassus
Plaque
Designed by Nicola Slaney.
Grass-of-Parnassus is not actually a grass as its name implies, but in fact is a plant whose five white petals create a cup-shaped flower that has at its centre a cluster of yellow stamens. The plant used to be commonly found, but today it is now confined to pastures, moors and marshes, mainly in the north of the UK, where the conditions are perfect for it to thrive. Also known as ‘Bog-Star’ due to its love for a wet and fertile soil in which to grow, it is the county flower of Cumbria and flowers between the months of June and September, bringing a shower of white stars to the Cumbrian landscape.

Spring Plaque
Both the humble dwarf cornel and the sweet-tasting cloudberry seek out and thrive in cold climates and both have delicate and attractive small flowers. The flowers of a dwarf cornel are tiny and black. The more familiar four white petals of the plant are not, in fact, petals at all but bracts - a coloured covering of the flower. The almost equally rare cloudberries are found in cold or mountainous parts of the northern hemisphere. On the North Yorkshire Moors, both species are incredibly hard to track down and each year it becomes harder and harder to do so. Dwarf cornel fruit arrives in long clusters of shiny orange, juicy berries extremely attractive to birds.
Nicola Slaney mixes the flowers and fruits of both plants together, all labelled as Cold Hunters.

Beckmickle Ing
vase
Designed by Nicola Slaney.
H 10cm £385
Dorothy Farrer’s Spring Wood is a short walk from the picturesque Cumbrian village of Staveley to the east of Lake Windermere. From the Spring Wood, quiet country lanes drop down to the River Kent, where a riverside trail leads to Beckmickle Ing. Here, sheltering under the broadleaved trees can be discovered some of the prettiest woodland flora – with wild flowers including globe-flowers, a member of the Ranunculaceae family, with striking flowers shaped like a globe. The flowers bloom on stems rising above the foliage in shades of yellow and orange and they thrive in damp woodland, so the woods around Staveley provide the perfect habitat.
Spring steps forward in the dark ground of Compton’s Midnight tapestry, with golden, sprightly daffodils tossing their heads and dancing, amid foliage of minty, blue-green tinged with raspberry and doused in honey-coloured hues. Nicola uses contrasting sprigs of tiny forget-me-knots, like blue stars in a galaxy, the largest and hottest stars of them all, to set Spring ablaze.
