At the time of writing this, I am sat under duvet praying for the heat to arrive! Surely the sun will be shining down on us this month! April is a time for blossom and growth, it is also my daughter’s 20th birthday. My goodness how time flies! It is also my two year anniversary of printing Lifestyle magazine Cyprus and what an unprecedented two years it has been. Hopefully some kind of normality is resuming and we can look forward to the start of a successful summer season for everyone. Thank you as always, you lovely readers, for choosing to read Lifestyle magazine and thank you to our supportive advertisers, for trusting the no 1 magazine for expats in Cyprus. Every month when I am out and

about delivering the copies, there’s always someone waiting to pick it out of my hands eager to read, which is very encouraging. I’ve spent a fabulous month networking around the island, from Paphos to Limassol, Larnaca to Paralimni. I’ve been fortunate to meet new people, something I love and have made many friends with The Girlfriends Circle and recently with Global Women Cyprus. See all the pictures inside. It’s always inspiring to meet other entrepreneurs running their own businesses and I have been fortunate to speak to many inspirational women including Linda Giblett who runs Bowen Therapy in Oroklini and Angie

Savory who runs Fatkatz in Freneros. Empowered women empower women. Wishing you a Happy Easter and a month of abundance and joy!

YOGA

Yoga teacher and mum, Sarah Keenan, chats to Lifestyle about her growing business

S

he moved over to Cyprus in 2019 after living in Germany for many years and set up her Grace Yoga Studio in Oroklini. She said, "I trained as a Yoga teacher in 2018 after practising Yoga myself for well over 20 years, I travelled to India to train so therefore I am experienced in the very traditional methods and styles such as Astanga and Hatha, along with Meditation, Anatomy and Philosophy, I can deliver many types of classes such as Pre Natal and Rehab along with specialities tailored to specific sports for example ‘Yoga for Cyclists or Runners’ either in a group class environment or as a private one to one session.

6

Yoga is my passion and I have been fortunate enough to have worked alongside the British Army community both in Germany and in Cyprus, offering both physical and

mental wellbeing to the military personnel and their spouses, through both rehab courses and general classes, I also provide Yoga as part of the training for the Army Triathlon Team when they hold their training camps in Cyprus. With regards to rehab on occasions there had some physical limitations and injuries but with really gentle posture and movements I can help aid their recovery, in as little as 6 weeks I’ve seen amazing progressions where all embraced it and want to continue with their own personal Yoga practise which is amazing. When we moved to Cyprus, I was very keen to find a base for teaching Yoga and my friend offered me studio space, she then relocated back to the UK and I took over the whole studio creating a beautiful space where people can come and

take a class in a friendly environment and then relax, have a chill out and a chat with healthy snacks and a tea or coffee. We’ve been visitors Cyprus many times and I fell in love with this island, with grown up children myself and husband didn’t want to go back to the UK from Germany so we came here, and it’s the best decision we’ve ever made” GRACE YOGA & HEALING - 99 205159 sarahkeenan2206@ outlook.com

BOWEN THERAPY

Lifestyle met with Linda Giblett owner of Bowen, at her studio in Oroklini

L

inda moved to Cyprus with her husband last August and decided the time was right to set up a business. ‘We’ve had a property here for many years and with the Covid pandemic and restrictions coming to an end I just thought it was time to start my Bowen business" Linda is very experienced in the fitness and wellbeing industry. She started her career as a group fitness instructor teaching aerobics and later became a personal trainer specialising in rehabilitation. Twenty years ago she started doing yoga and remains passionate about it. After practicing and studying in Malaysia with time at the Iyengar Institute, Linda qualified as an Iyengar Yoga teacher. She says that attending retreats to Rishikesh and other places left her with invaluable experiences which she can pass on to her students. “My belief in the benefits of Bowen Therapy was born through my two sporty children that needed help with sports injuries that traditional treatments weren’t solving. I was convinced that Bowen therapy was the solution after seeing remarkable results with just a few sessions.

I started training in Bowen Therapy and qualified following the course of study, practical training set by and with the Bowen Therapy Academy, Australia. I have all sorts of people with different problems come to see me, with low back pain, knee and

shoulder problems as common complaints. With the last two years of COVID lockdown many people have developed problems caused by spending long periods on computers, tablets and laptops, Bowen can help relieve that. The Bowen technique does not focus only on the area of the pain but looks for other underlying issues which causes the pain. Only by remedying those issues can the pain be

relieved or reduced. Traditional therapy generally concentrates on the area of the pain which provides short term releases with the pain often returning after a short period. “The interesting thing is when you speak to people, I hear, “Oh, I am fed up, I’ve been to different all sorts of different people and I am still in pain and they come to Bowen last. I wish they came to me first as I can save them time and money. They’re going to other people and the problem isn’t fixed until they have the Bowen Therapy with me.” Bowen is an all over therapy, I like to take my time, relax the client and talk to them. it is a gentle therapy, using gentle rolling movements to help your body relax and heal, it is not physiotherapy and is not massage. Linda is the only Bowen Therapist in Oriklini and is keen to bring her skills to help people with pain and physical problems.

WHO IS BOWEN THERAPY FOR? •

Suitable for anyone looking to relieve chronic or acute pain, injury and stress related conditions.

Gentle non-evasive therapy.

Using rolling movements of targeted areas of the body.

Muscle and structural realignment using the body’s own healing processes.

HEALTH

Diabetes and the feet What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by high concentration of glucose in the blood (hyperglycaemia). The two main types of Diabetes are: Type 1: The body is unable to produce a hormone called insulin, which regulates blood glucose levels. Type 2: The body does not effectively use the above hormone What are the complications of Diabetes? Diabetes is a chronic disease which can lead to various complications as time progresses. Peripheral neuropathy (loss of sensation) and vascular disease (poor circulation) are the major complications of diabetes that can affect the feet. What can I do to protect and care for my feet? Foot checks are very important for people with diabetes and should not be neglected. A very important part of care and prevention is up to patients. Remember the following: •

Inspect your feet daily

Wear good fitting shoes – not tight or worn.

Never go barefoot.

Take care of your skin Use a diabetic-friendly moisturizing cream.

12

Cut your toe nails straight across, not deep into the corners.

Do not sit too closely to heat sources, such as fireplaces and heaters. This could be a danger of burning yourself without feeling it.

2. Look for any deformities or excessive pressure points on the feet. In this case, he or she will advise you on how to choose appropriate footwear and whether an orthotic insole is necessary. 3. Help you keep your nails and callous under control, safely.

Seek professional help for your hard skin / callus.

4. Help in the management of open wounds - ulcers on the feet.

Keep your blood sugar levels under control and steady.

Check your feet every day and if there are any problems see your doctor or podiatrist.

Early treatment of complications in diabetic feet (e.g. ulcers) can help prevent more serious complications, such as severe infections and amputations.

What can a podiatrist do for people with Diabetes? Among others, a podiatrist will: 1. Check the status of your feet by performing a diabetic foot check, which will indicate both the level of blood supply to your feet, and if there is sensation loss Diabetes in yourand feet.the feet

Understanding your dog barking: Communicating with your dog bark, but it always

W

e looked at Google search data from January 2020 to December 2020 to find out what dog owners were searching for the most online. The searches with the highest average monthly search volume were “dog barking”, “dog separation anxiety”, “dog noise”, “dog anxiety”, and “stop dog barking” with 27,100, 6,600, 5,400, 4,400, and 4,400 searches respectively. All dogs bark, this is normal and can be their way of communicating with us. They might be trying to tell us that they’re hungry or thirsty, are feeling lonely, or need to go to the toilet. Understanding the different types of dog barks will let us know whether our dog is being a nuisance or needs something in particular. A dog may bark as a warning, an invitation, a call of distress, or just because it's happy. There are many reasons for the

14

means your dog is communicating something. If your dog is barking excessively, the first step is understanding why. Prolonged, non-stop barking, with intervals in between can signal loneliness and feeling unhappy. One single yelp or a highpitched bark can signal unexpected pain A series of yelps or highpitched barks can signal fear or pain. Rapid barks with pauses – something is wrong, i.e. they sense an intruder.

anxiety. They will also pace, act out repetitive behaviour, destroy things in the house, and will go to the toilet in the house. However, you don’t see this because it occurs when you’re out. To find out if your dog has separation anxiety, you could set up a camera to monitor your dog’s behaviour.

One or two short, medium-pitched barks – usually a greeting sound.

If your dog displays these symptoms, it’s a sign that they’re struggling being left alone so much, so you need to avoid leaving them alone so frequently and so long.

If you’re getting reports from neighbours that your dog is barking a lot when you’re out, this is a sign of separation

The more rapidly your dog barks, the more urgently they are attempting to communicate.

Continuous barks lowerpitch – a dog that can sense an imminent problem.

S

ituated in the heart of the picture postcard village of Oroklini, Lithos Bar & restaurant is firmly established as one of the best traditional eateries for top quality Cypriot food. Open all year round, this family favourite is also one of the best places to find a traditional Sunday roast. I recently went along to sample their famous lunch, along with three friends. We were given a ticket and then went up to the carvery table. We were presented with lavish portions of pork,

18

beef, lamb and turkey and helped ourselves to the huge buffet. Home made yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese,a generous selection of green vegetables and carrots, salad bar, sweet potatoes, mashed and roast potatoes, red and white cabbage, lashings of gravy and a fresh salad bar. My plate was piled sky high! The atmosphere was terrific, we were made to feel very welcome and the drinks flowed all afternoon to soak up our delicious feast The restaurant was packed all

day and it’s not hard to see why. It was a perfect Sunday lunch and highly recommended.

Secure Corporate and Domestic Storage in Cyprus

C

hange is bound to happen. Renovation, relocation, remodelling. All these rank as one of the most stressful life events. Your life and work are disrupted as you make adjustments and changes to your daily routine. Additionally, organising, packing and keeping track of your belongings is a hassle. Then, once you move, you have to figure out where to put all your items. Luckily, you can take away some of that stress by storing your possessions

22

at Peter Morton Removals storage facilities! At PMR, one of the core values is to make customers life as stress-free as possible. Renovation, Relocation and Remodelling, do not have to be stressful life events. Due to increased demand a few years ago, Peter Morton made a considerable investment and sourced a dedicated, massive storage facility on a 7,500 square meter site. Right now, it is ranked as the largest and safest storage facility in Cyprus. At PMR, the storage crates are made of wood and are 250 cubic ft each in size. The storage facilities are approved by BAR (British Association of Removers) and all crates are manufactured and imported from the UK. It’s easy to store items anywhere, but our warehouse is both convenient and protected. Considering

your belongings’ safety ahead of time will save you the stress of having to replace something later or potentially losing something irreplaceable, expensive or dear to your heart. Additionally, the warehouse itself and all goods that are in the store are fully insured! With the recent increase in Cyprus crime rates, storing valuable goods at home doesn’t seem like a safe option any longer. Unlike houses, storage facilities offer more security to stored items. At Peter Morton Removals, the whole facility is covered by a state-of-the-art security system monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Three freerunning guard dogs also patrol the premises. It is, therefore, wiser to store valuable items in a

storage unit rather than in the garage or basement of our houses. Peter Morton Removals domestic storage crates are all individually numbered. They are loaded on to purposebuilt vehicles and brought to your house, ready to be loaded by the PMR team. Upon loading of each crate, with a full inventory, the doors will be secured. On arrival of the PMR vehicle back at a secure warehouse, your numbered crate will be placed back in its specific row by a forklift. This means your goods are not handled anymore from when collected. The redelivery process works exactly the same but in

reverse. Every crate that arrives at the warehouse is logged on to the computer system. You can access your domestic storage crates at any time by appointment with the office.

of where they going and what conditions they will be stored in. We welcome potential customers to come and view our facility, so you can see for yourself and be confident in your decision to use us.

At PMR, we always suggest to our clients that they come and look at the storage facility. If you want to store your goods, you need to be very sure For more information, please visit their website www.petermortonremoval.com or give them a call on 26923588 - Paphos office or 25722180 - Limassol office.

GIN

Double the Trouble! ETSU DOUBLE YUZU GIN

O

ne doesn’t often associate Japan with gin, however, following their move into the whisky market they started producing around 1870 but the first commercial distillation was 1924 upon the opening of the Yamazaki distillery - they are now following on again from the Scottish lead and gin has seen a rapid uptake in gin production. There are many reasons, not least being the upsurge in gin popularity, however, practicalities also figure highly, as gin can be produced much more quickly and cheaply. Whereas spirits such as whisky, require time in the barrel, gin doesn't, making it that much quicker to produce and eliminating a few steps. So, whether the spirit rests in oak for just a couple of years, or ultimately forms part of a twelve, fifteen, or eighteen year-old bottling, the financial returns in the whisky industry are far from quick in their arrival.

Unlike the other two Etsu gins, Etsu have their Double Yuzu created at the Akita distillery on Honshu Island. Translating to word ‘pleasure,’ Etsu is named after the prefecture it is based in, on the coast of the Sea of Japan, and extends eastwards across the island towards the Ōu Mountains. And it’s from these mountains and the botanicals found thereon, that the gin finds its fresh and light flavours. Pleasure is the name of the game Including the mountain fresh water and Japanese citrus fruit - Yuzu, this gin includes juniper, liquorice root, angelica, coriander and matcha, giving the gin a strong citrus aroma. As this is a double yuzu gin, unsurprisingly this is a predominant flavour profile as well, with hints of lemon also to be found. Due to the citrus flavours, it also finishes fresh and light with a touch of zing. It has to be one of the most sophisticated gins that

Email: theginnolier@gmail.com 24

Stanna Wieclawska Kyriakou

has passed my lips: think of a zingy citrus tart with the floral fragrance of the Yuzu fruit, followed by a spicy sansho peppery finish and floral/herb overtones, and you’re there. This gin drinks well as a refreshing longer drink, so it works great with tonic or a pink grapefruit soda.

DISABILITY

Angie Savory, owner of Fatcatz Mobility, Frenaros

M

y name is Angie, I run Fatcatz Mobility. My shop is in Frenaros, Ammochostos, on the main road (just along from Aquademy leisure). We are a valuable resource for disability equipment and information. I have a wealth of experience in healthcare knowledge, both hospital and in the community. I can offer practical problem-solving, and by renting and selling equipment. I serve tourists travelling with additional needs, or their accidental slip, trips and falls; also for people undergoing surgery who may need equipment temporarily or permanently, such as wheelchairs on a daily basis for attending outpatient’s appointments and similar. Renting enables me to offer a ‘try-before-you-

buy’ option, for people considering larger purchases. Families faced with difficult situations such as Parkinson’s, dementia, terminal care or plans to repatriate their loved ones, can use my long term reduced-rate bed package, so that the family do not have to buy a bed, or wait to wade through the lengthy government assistance application process.

or moving & handling of people. I serve clients all over the island when required. You can call me on 99297750, or message via Facebook Page “ Fatcatz Mobility” in English or Greek.

Sadly, Cyprus is still a long way behind many countries, in that disabilities remain topics of stigma, less talked about and, in some cases, prejudiced; my goal is to make the subjects less taboo, the assistance less difficult, and in general make accessibility for people with visible and invisible additional needs more acceptable and positively welcomed As a licenced trainer, I can also offer informal and formal training in first aid 25

HEARING

Hard time hearing people in face masks? Hearing aids can help Face masks have unequivocally been a good thing when it comes to helping prevent the spread of Covid-19. But they present challenges when trying to communicate with others. Especially if you or the person you’re communicating with has hearing loss. Face masks muffle speech and block important lip-reading cues. Both are key to understanding speech. Add in social distancing or group video chats — which have nothing to do with masks but plenty to do with speech audibility — and Covid has definitely made it a lot harder to hear what friends, family members, colleagues, doctors and dentists, and the clerk scanning your groceries are saying. Hearing aids make hearing easier It should be no surprise, though, that hearing aids offset these challenges and can help make it easier to hear people who are wearing face masks. By their very nature, hearing aids

with Economou Hearing

amplify sound which, in many cases, is all it takes to hear what face-mask wearers are saying.

and background noise into consideration — to deliver enhanced speech audibility on demand.

Evolv AI hearing aids can help even more

Not only is Edge Mode great for masks, it’s handy to have anytime you encounter a noisy or particularly challenging listening environment.

Starkey’s Evolv AI hearing aids have been engineered to go above and beyond simple sound amplification to specifically tackle the challenges created by face masks, social distancing and background noise. They include our proprietary Edge Mode technology — available in all Evolv AI hearing aids — which has been proven to be highly effective in resolving speech intelligibility issues caused by masks. How? By putting the power of artificial intelligence (AI) at your fingertips. Just a double tap of your hearing aids activates Edge Mode anytime you need it. Once activated, Edge Mode scans the acoustic environment you’re in, then instantly optimizes sound — taking masks, distance

Our new Mask Mode, too, was specifically designed to make people who are wearing masks easier to hear. Mask Mode is a custom memory in our Thrive app that offsets the loss of speech audibility due to face masks by boosting sound in the affected regions. Mask Mode is available on all Evolv AI hearing aids. To experience how far hearing aids have come and what they can do for you, simply call at 77772627 and book a free hearing appointment with one of our hearing healthcare professionals in your area who can test your hearing and consult with you about treatment options available.

NOTES AND REFLECTIONS OF A WOMAN CREATING HER BEST LIFE Stefania Bongiovanni Hi there! Happy to see that, whilst reading this wonderful magazine, you are taking some time to share some thoughts with me :) This month I would like to ask you: Does it ever happen that you’ve been impatiently looking forward to an event, or to meeting someone or starting a new project or a journey, and you end up disappointed because things didn’t meet your expectations? Expectations can be tricky because we imagine or start living an experience before it actually comes true, therefore the results may not match our desires. And probably most of all because the outcome may depend on third parties. When we forget to live in the here and now and to enjoy moments and situations as they occur, and when we place our happiness or success into someone else’s hands, chances are that we will get

disappointed. We cannot foresee and we cannot control events and people, therefore often times the best thing to do is simply going with the flow and be open to receive what Life (or the Universe, or God) has in store for us. Let there be no mistake: being a person of action, I’m the last person who will ever advice you to live passively. What I am suggesting is to shift your perspective from a habit of having expectations to a habit of setting intentions. Try it, you may be pleasantly surprised! Intentions to me go hand in hand with proactiveness, choice, positivity, purpose. For example, if, when you wake up every morning, you declare your intention to receive good news, to be presented with opportunities, to accidentally meet a friend while you’re out for your errands and have a great time together, etc., you place yourself in a position

of attracting all these positive situations. Like this, or even better ;-) Choose intentions instead of expectations, this way you will leave some space for good things to come into your life. Open your heart and your mind to receiving blessings, and I bet you will. And now, gorgeous, just go out there and start living your best life!

Who am I? I’m an Italian living in Cyprus and loving it crazily. My name is Stefania Bongiovanni, some of you will know me as the founder of The Girlfriends’ Circle, but as well as the woman who believes in #sisterhood and in #womensupportwomen.

H WOMEN’S HEALT

GP reveals the five symptoms women should never ignore Common symptoms that often go unreported By Dr Elizabeth Rosen, obstetrics and gynaecology specialist for Livi. Persistent fatigue Tiredness is very common, and whilst it’s not concerning to feel tired once in a while, ongoing fatigue that you experience over a long period of time could be an indication of an underlying health issue. There are several possible reasons for fatigue, ranging from lack of proper sleep, vitamin D or iron deficiency, to medical problems such as depression, 30

heart disease or an underactive thyroid. Fatigue is one of the main symptoms of an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), an autoimmune disease that mainly affects women. The condition has symptoms of tiredness, feeling cold, lack of concentration, depression, dry skin, brittle hair and nails, constipation, weight gain, a low heart rate and muscle pain and weakness. You should speak to a GP if you’re experiencing these symptoms. Abdominal discomfort Whilst bloating can be common, increased abdominal size over a period of time can be a symptom of ovarian cancer. This is one of the most common forms of gynaecological

cancers, but unfortunately it is often diagnosed late, due to lack of awareness of the symptoms. Bloating can also be a sign of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), constipation, or intolerance towards certain types of food, such as lactose or gluten, so it’s important to discuss your symptoms with your doctor to get a thorough diagnosis. Ovarian cancer is often a difficult cancer to identify, but there are some key symptoms to look out for. These include lower abdominal pain, increased urinary urgency, weight loss,

loss of appetite and feeling full whilst eating, as well as changes to your bowel habits. Chest pain Discomfort or chest pain may be an indicator of something serious. If it suddenly occurs and doesn’t go away, it may even be a sign of a heart attack. Despite coronary heart disease being the single biggest killer of women worldwide, women are less likely to report chest pain and more likely to dismiss symptoms. They’re also 50 percent more likely than men to be initially misdiagnosed when it comes to heart attacks. As well as a sign of heart disease, chest pain can also be an indicator of a heart attack or a lung embolism, which can both be life threatening. The most common heart attack symptoms for women include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, lethargy, and pain radiating in the arms, back, jaw and neck. You could also

suffer from a sensation of heaviness and pressure on your chest. Get emergency help straight away if you feel any strange sensations in your chest. Discomfort during sex Pain during sex isn’t normal but is something that happens to nearly three out of four women during their lives. Despite how common this can be, many women will not ask for medical advice. Possible reasons for pain during intercourse include endometriosis, a debilitating condition that affects roughly 10% of women of a reproductive age. Other possible causes include ovarian cysts, fibroids, infections and vaginal dryness. Pain during sex is not something that should normally happen, but it can be very common. Unfortunately, many women will not seek medical advice due to embarrassment. If you experience any pain, discuss it with your doctor. Breast changes All women should regularly examine their

breasts to monitor for serious health conditions, such as lumps, which can be a sign of breast cancer. Many breast lumps are not cancerous, but you should always get them checked out. Lumps are the most common signs of breast cancer, but you should be aware of other symptoms, including changes to the size or shape of your breasts, lumps or swelling in the armpit, rashes or an inverted nipple. It’s very important to check for changes in your breasts. Every woman should examine their breasts once a month at the same point in their menstrual cycle. It’s the most important life insurance a woman can give herself.

MUSIC

SPRING INTO APRIL WITH THE TROUBLE NOTES!!

T

his month I want to share The Trouble Notes with you, a ‘family’ of traveling artists who have made it their mission, to create their own cultural universe by mixing influences from around the world and incorporating them into their music. The personal experiences, travel stories, memories and different traditions of this inspiring Berlin based trio produces an eclectic fusion of music.

The three musicians are from influential artistic cities around the world, New York, London, and Berlin. It was the dream of a musician from New York (Cerven) who left his Wall Street job to follow his passion of music. This path took him to London, busking the streets and making little networks in cities, where he met the second member and then onto Berlin where the trio was completed. Their music is filled with musical influences of Rock, Jazz,

Music expert Drew Andreou, who organises Cyprus Rocks, gives her insight into the music scene around Cyprus. If you want to be included email info@lifestylelivingcyprus.com

funk, roots and dance music and acoustic folk and all three individuals, bring unique perspectives fused together to create their magic. The enchanting, played violin is the voice of the trio, complimented by the deep rich tones of

the percussion and the rhythmic guitar playing. Without the presence of lyrics, you become more engaged with the music and able to translate its universal meaning of instrumental world fusion. It is like listening to a piece of art coming to life and impossible not to get drawn into their world. The Trouble Notes released their first EP, Soundtracks from the Street in 2017 followed by their album, Lose Your Ties in 2018, which both catapulted into the charts and received success and worldwide acclaim. Their new album release, Liberty Awaits is scheduled to be released later this year. Their

popularity has led them to perform at some of Europe’s largest festivals and their videos have been viewed more than one million times! The positive and infectious energy of the trio is shared as they express themselves through their instruments. The combination of dreamy, passionate, and fiery to the upbeat groovy and joyful elements of their sound, touches your soul and wakens your senses. The flowing sounds of the violin, the marching beat of the drum and the refined guitar playing takes you on a magical musical journey, which I embarked on a year ago.

The concept that the universe brought these three wanderlust humble musicians together is enough to pique your curiosity and search them out. Even more admirable is the fact that the group invites their audience to be part of their journey as they believe that they play an important role in the creation of their music. ‘MUSIC FROM EVERYWHERE, FOR EVERYONE’ The Trouble Notes are, violinist Bennet Cerven, guitarist Florian Eisenschmidt and percussionist Oliver Maguire. 33
