I am addicted to love and happiness from the readers.” This quote belongs to a writer with a cute pen name, Muek Whan. His writing covers topics such as love, movie, music, food and travel. He is a writer who can stress the essentials parts of interviews and bring necessary information to his readers. A Frame

บางเวลากรอบท�ำให้ความคิดเด่นชัด แต่บางเวลากรอบก็เป็นสิ่งปิดกัน้ ความ คิ ด สร้ า งสรรค์ ไ ด้ เ ช่ น กั น เส้ น แบ่ ง ระหว่ า งในกรอบและนอกกรอบนั้ น บางครั้งเราก็มองไม่เห็น Fine Dae ฉบับนีเ้ รามาแบ่งปันกรอบที่ มองเห็นและมองไม่เห็นของแขกรับเชิญ หลายๆ ท่าน ซึ่งมีกรอบของชีวิตแตกต่าง กันไป

With any conversation, we somehow feel that when expressing an idea it is framed psychologically by certain beliefs or thoughts. This also applies for paintings. While some paintings look most beautiful in a frame, others are just as alluring while being displayed without a frame. Likewise, some frames highlight a painting’s beauty, while a frame sometimes can be as though a fence blocking us from entering the inside. Frames can be both tangible and conceptual. And the way they’re shown is ultimately up to the artist. In this issue of Fine Dae, we have compiled certain frames, conceptually, from interesting people with different career backgrounds and views on life. 21

“When I was young, I wanted to wear long hair. I was fed up with my long hair being cut by the teachers at schools; it was as though a kind of punishment. Then, at college I could wear any hairstyle. So I became the one with the longest hair among friends for a period of time. Finally, I found that I couldn’t really feel the existence of myself. I didn’t know who I am. Then I started to understand that outer appearance is not as important as my mind. The most important thing is to be aware of what you’re doing and what we’re giving back to society. “With these thoughts, to be or not to be in the frame is not important.”

“Sometimes it’s important to first set a goal because when you know what your goal is you will know in which direction you should go. So there is no point getting out of the frame when your goal is in there. The problem is your goal may be something that no one has ever achieved, so it’s hard to find ways to reach it. And if the goal is being outside the frame, you surely need to get outside of it to think creatively and differently. To think creatively and differently can be something positive or negative. Some use it in a wrong way. For example, some claim different ways of thinking as their right to not obey certain rules and they don’t do anything creatively. Getting out of the frame and being different is worthless if there is no practice.”

“Sometimes society is in-need of something we have ignored and don’t think is important. So to realize the significance of things we once ignored is a kind of conceptual frame I think we all should keep in our mind. This is because without it, we may have to climb over more obstacles in order to achieve our goals. I have direct experience with this that made me step back into the frame. When I was young, I wanted to have long hair but now I never want to have it. I once disliked putting my shirt-tail in the trousers. But today I love to do it with the feeling that I want to follow the same traditions and rules that others do. I don’t think people can live together without rules. This would be the end of all society.”

Despite such diversity, we are all living in the same society, the world. We are just a part of it. We are a drawing line or a brush stroke on that painting. His work illustrates the local places where he intends to portray his work. This weekend, I asked myself for permission to buy a plane ticket and fly to Chiang Mai. I needed to take a break from my prolonged and busy work. I thought that it may be a good time to relax and sip a cup of coffee, go for a walk and feel a cool breeze before heading back to fight the cruel world once again. Perhaps I can define Chiang Mai by using the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, the Japanese view of contemplating the imperfection of life while enjoying natural beauty as it is. I found AKACASA, a small-size hotel with five rooms decorated with antique wooden furniture. It offers privacy and a peaceful environment surrounded by nature, an accommodation which the likes of is hard to find in Chiang Mai nowadays. I arrived at the hotel via limousine and kept myself for awhile under a big shady tree that has certainly been here longer than Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been alive. After escaping from the sunshine for awhile, I went to yoga for a little sweating before finding a ride and having a light dinner along the Ping River. I like AKACASA because of its convenient location in town, and it is surrounded by nature. I can stay here alone and travel to other places easily. What I like the most is that in front of the hotel is a walking street that has all available all kinds of antiques and vintage collections at affordable prices. I once purchased from this market a black bag similar to the one I used when I was a kid. Hopefully, this time I can get some good books or a few other cool things to bring back to my room. อยู่ในอากาศ ได้ยินเพียงเสียงลมหวิวๆอยู่ ในหู แขนขาโดนใบไผ่บาดจนแสบ มีเสียง ตะโกนออกมาว่า เบรคๆๆๆๆๆๆ ฉันคว้า ไม้ง่ามขัดรอกไว้ พร้อมกับใจที่เต้นเหมือน จะหลุดออกมาจากร่าง นาทีระทึกของฐาน แรกจบลงด้วยแผลจากใบไผ่และขาฟกช�้ำ เพราะไม่ทันหยุดก่อนถึงฐาน ร่างกายฉัน อ่อนปวกเปียก สิ่งที่ส�ำเหนียกได้คือฉันยัง มี ร ่ า งกายอยู ่ ค รบ และที่ ส� ำ คั ญ ...ฉั น ยั ง ไม่ตาย ฐานต่อมาฉันเรียนรู้ ท�ำความเข้าใจ กับเคเบิล รอก และไม้ง่าม ข้ามผ่านสิ่งที่ ฉันกลัวที่สุดในชีวิตนั่นคือความสูง เมื่อถึง ฐานต่อไป ฉันจึงเริ่มเปิดตา และเริ่มชอบ ชีวติ บนเส้นลวด เมือ่ เหวีย่ งตัวออกจากฐาน ลมแรงประทะใบหน้า เลื่อนผ่านหน้าผาสูง ใหญ่ขนาดตึกสิบชั้น มองเห็นนกร่อนผ่าน เฉียดหน้า บางสเตชั่นก็ผ่านม่านน�้ำตกสูง ละอองน�ำ้ พัดมาเย็นชืน่ ใจ ชีวติ เหนือพืน้ ดิน ช่างสวยงามเหมือนฝัน จากฐานหนึง่ ทีว่ า่ สูง ก็อยากไปดูที่สูงขึ้นไปอีก การย�่ำอยู่บนพื้น

Displayed on a white projection screen in front of me was a woman zip-lining through deep rock cliffs and a waterfall. A shimmering rainbow was being created by fine mist coming a waterfall, mixing with the sunshine. When the camera zoomed out, the woman appeared as though a tiny dot amidst the great green views of Bolaven Plateau in Southern Laos. The lights in the room I was in were switched on again while my limbs were going soft just thinking whether I really have to go through with this. “Are you scared,” a guide asked me. I smirked back at him. For an acrophobic person like me, merely using a glass elevator in a 4-story department store makes me shudder. “Don’t forget. You still have to use a zip-line to get into the hotel,” said the same man as before. “See you tomorrow at 8 am.” He sneered at me and left his fearful tourist gasping, alone... *** “Tree Tops” is a hotel built amid a crown of trees located in Southern Laos’ Bolaven Plateau. There is one room per tree at this hotel. And traveling there can begin in Pakse before moving on to Baan Nhong Laung, the great coffee plantation area in Laos. The coffee breed there is of a primitive species. And recently, arabica coffee beans were also been planted due to new market demands. At Baan Nhong Laung, I was fully equipped with necessary equipment such as a helmet, harness and prong. Afterward, the group I was with and I walked through the coffee plantation in the late morning. The sunshine was not so strong. And once we Savanna’s highest point, I began thinking of Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand. For someone who never exercises and always works in front of a computer at a desk, now was also the time for learning how to rely on simple things for a sense of security, such as a pulley and prong.

Lesson one involved how to use all the equipment and walk on the bridge using a harness to hook on to the fixed cable lines. These lines were arranged by the tour company for safety. There are eight zip-line stations and the distance between each of them is different. Some are about 200 meters apart; others are 400 meters and some stations are as high as two stories from the ground. The first station is about 200 meters long. A cool breeze coming from over the mountain’s plateau penetrated my skin and went straight to my heart; my fear level was at its highest point. My legs were shaking and I could not see anything below besides the tree tops. I gently sat on the rim of the wooden station, looking at the pulley and prong. I took a deep breath and looked for the destination at the end of the line. My fear arose as I imagined death and my family members who had already passed away. Before my wild imagination grew more clear, a mysterious hand pushed on me really hard. I was now flying out from the station and screaming. I closed my eyes tightly and my body was spinning in the air. All I heard was the wind passing through my ears. My arms and legs were hurting from being struck by bamboo leaves. Suddenly I heard someone yell, “break.. break...break.” I grabbed my prong and pushed it against the pulley, trying to stop. My heart was beating so hard that it was as though bouncing off from the inside of my chest. My exhilarating experience from the first station ended with many bruises and cuts, but all I could think of was that my body was still fine. The most important thing was I was still alive. At the next station, I learned and understood more about the cable line, pulley and prong. I also overcame the thing I was most scared of, height. During the next station experience, I began opening my eyes and loving life on the cable line. When I swung off from the station, I enjoyed the wind bumping my face. I was sliding through enormous cliffs as large as a 10-story building. I

could see birds flying right next to me. In some stations, I passed a waterfall and felt the fine cool spray. Life above the ground was beautiful, like a dream. Going from one station to another, I wanted to see more of the higher views, and this made walking on the ground become a boring story. I arrived at the hotel around dusk. The hotel overlooks the treetops, and I could see the great Hau Sao waterfall in the distance, making me feel like a speck of dust drifting into the mightiness of nature. I laid down, listening to the wind breezing through the tree tops at night. Stepping up to the fear of losing the feeling of security related to walking on the ground, I have destroyed my fear of heights. I now have a pulley and harness to take me to see the beauty of life, while I have a prong to stop and slow me down for sufficiency and safety. This trip to Southern Laos opened my eyes to a new me who now has courage to do things that people think are impossible. I now have courage to lose some stability in exchange for a more aesthetic way of living life. I give thanks to the cable line, pulley, prong and the cool guide for traveling with me on this trip. From Thailand, travelers can get there via bus via first crossing the Chong Mek border in Ubonratchathani province and then traveling on to Pakse. ในโลกของศิลปะทางด้านดนตรี เรา แทบทุกคนคงมีแนวทางทีต่ นเองชืน่ ชอบกัน อยู่ไม่มากก็น้อย ไม่ว่าจะเป็นบทเพลงที่ถูก ถ่ายทอดผ่านเครือ่ งดนตรีประเภทต่างๆ ทัง้ กีตาร์, กลอง, เปียโน และอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย แต่ส�ำหรับ FINE DAE ฉบับนี้ เราขอพาคุณ มารู้จักกับศิลปะแห่ง “การขับร้องประสาน เสียง” ซึ่งในความรู้สึกของคนส่วนใหญ่ใน สังคมไทย มักมองว่าเป็นศิลปะชัน้ สูงทีแ่ สน ไกลตัวหรือเป็นดนตรีคลาสสิคทีเ่ ข้าถึงยาก จะด้วยการมีตน้ ก�ำเนิดมาจากในโบสถ์หรือ มีความเกี่ยวพันกับศาสนาอย่างไรก็ตาม ทว่าหากได้ลองสัมผัสกับความหมาย อันแท้จริงของมันแล้ว เชื่อเถอะว่า...คุณ อาจจะมองเห็นมันเป็นศิลปะที่งดงามใน ความง่าย และสามารถสร้างแรงบันดาลใจ ดีๆ ในชีวิตได้อย่างไม่น่าเชื่อเลยก็ได้ อาจารย์อายุ นามเทพ ผู้ซึ่งก้าวเดินอยู่ บนเส้นทางแห่งเสียงดนตรีมาเกือบตลอด ชีวิต ตั้งแต่วัยเพียง 6 ปีที่เริ่มเล่นเปียโน ครั้งแรกโดยมีแรงบันดาลใจจากมารดาที่ เป็นนักเปียโน จนกระทั่งปัจจุบันที่อาจารย์ อายุเปรียบได้ดงั่ ฟันเฟืองส่วนส�ำคัญทีท่ ำ� ให้ “ศิลปะแห่งการขับร้องประสานเสียง” เติบโตอย่างสง่างาม ดังเห็นได้จากการพา คณะนักร้องประสานเสียงซึ่งเป็นนักศึกษา จากวิทยาลัยดุริยศิลป์ มหาวิทยาลัยพายัพ จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ ไปได้รับรางวัลระดับโลก มาแล้วหลายครั้ง และในโอกาสนี้ อาจารย์ อายุได้เล่าให้เราฟังถึงพลังของศาสตร์แห่ง

การขับร้องที่สรรสร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้กับ คนเราได้อย่างมากมาย ไม่เฉพาะทัง้ นักร้อง นักดนตรี วาทยกร แต่ยงั รวมไปถึงผูฟ้ งั ด้วย และสิ่งที่เราจะสัมผัสได้อย่างชัดเจนก็ คือ “ความสามัคคี” อันเป็นเหมือนหัวใจ หลักในการถ่ายทอดศิลปะแห่งเสียงเพลง แขนงนี้ อ อกมาได้ อ ย่ า งไพเราะจนชวน ขนลุก จากธรรมชาติของการขับร้องที่มีจุด เริ่มต้นโดยการใช้ “เสียง” ของคนสองคน ขึ้นไปเท่านั้น โดยไม่จ�ำกัดเลยว่าเสียงนั้น จะต้องเป็นเสียงที่ไพเราะหรือมีพรสวรรค์ ทางการขับร้องมากเพียงใด ขอเพียงแค่ผู้ ร้องมีความเชื่อในพลังแห่งความสามัคคี ที่จะหล่อหลอมทุกท่วงท�ำนองออกมาได้ อย่างน่าฟัง และที่ส�ำคัญที่สุดก็คือ หากคน เราสามารถน�ำความงดงามจากแรงบันดาล ใจดีๆ เหล่านี้ไปจรรโลงชีวิต ไม่ว่าคุณจะ เป็นเพียงแค่ “ผู้ฟัง” หรือ “ผู้ร้อง” สังคม ของเราคงเต็มไปด้วยสันติภาพ และความ สงบสุขอันแสนงดงามก็จะเป็นสิ่งที่อยู่ไม่ ไกลจากเราเลย เหมือนเช่นประโยคง่ายๆ ที่อาจารย์ อายุได้กล่าวทิ้งท้ายกับเราเอาไว้ว่า... “เสียงร้องของคนเรา เป็นเครื่อง ดนตรีที่ไพเราะที่สุดที่พระเจ้าสร้างขึ้น และการขับร้องประสานเสียงก็คือการ ใช้ เ ครื่ อ งดนตรี ที่ ไ พเราะที่ สุ ด ...โดย ไม่ จ� ำ เป็ น ต้ อ งมี เ ครื่ อ งดนตรี ชิ้ น ใด ประกอบเลยด้วยซ�้ำ”

People’s preference in the artistic world of music varies and so do the instruments, as different types – such as the guitar, drum, and piano – are used to create a piece of music. In this issue of Fine Dae, we are talking about the art of “choiring,” using human voices to make music. Some people, especially those in Thai society, may see this as a kind of high Art related to classical music which, to them, may be hard to appreciate due to varying cultural differences. But, if you try to appreciate this music

with an open mind, you will truly find that it’s like other pieces of art which can be appreciated by people of any age group. And such appreciation will possibly provide you with incredible inspiration as well. Ajarn Ayu Namtep is one of those who has lived nearly her entire life in the world of music. Inspired by her mother, a pianist, Ajarn Ayu began playing piano at the age of six. She is relatively the main cogwheel that moves the “choiring art” forward in Thailand, and she has likewise led a student choir from Payap University to international success several times. And in this occasion, Ajarn Ayu has shared her passion towards choral music and how it inspires different groups of people, both the artists and audience. What we clearly see is the “unity” of the artists. It’s because this is the key to expressing this art form and enchanting the audience. Basically, choral music requires the combining voices of two or more singers. What matters more than the voice quality and individual singing talent is how well the voices are synchronized; this creates the masterpiece. As a result, people can appreciate it and beyond this, get inspired. No matter if you are the artist or an audience member, anyone can experience this state of peacefulness through the sounds of human voices. Ajarn Ayu says, “The human voice is the most beautiful sound God has ever created. And choiring is the use of these most beautiful voices, with no need of any other instruments.”
